    Assignment #1

What I learned doing this assignment is…?

    – I learned how to identify the 5 Star Points and to understand what pulls the audience into the pilot.

    Mr. Robot

    Big Picture Hooks
Computer Hacker takes on shadow world government.

    Amazing and Intriguing
    Character
He is a computer hacker extraordinaire and highly intelligent.

    Empathy / Distress
    He is socially inept.

    Layers / Open Loops
Who’s after him? What secret society? Can he beat them? Or is he delusional
    and this is not real?

    Inviting Obsession
David & Goliath story. Will the little guy win against overwhelming odds?

    2nd round

We recognize ourselves in Elliot. Debt slavery is real. A small percentage of the population have all the money and the rest of us work for them. We would all love the idea of seeing a corporation fall if the rest of us became debt free. Like the banking crisis in the States, they paid out the banks who caused the crisis rather than the homeowners. So, we are rooting for Elliot.

Game of Thrones 5 Star Model

What I learned doing this assignment is how complex a serial TV series can grab and yank a viewer into it. I wanted to go to the next episode and had to force myself to stop.

    Big Picture Hooks –

This is a TV series with the scope of an epic motion picture. The music, the design, the acting. Then the mystery of the White Walkers (as we learn what they’re called), intrigue with the death of John Arryn, layer after layer of sub-plots and what-the-f moments keeps the viewer in the episode.

This isn’t JUST a TV series. It’s an epic in the vein of Excalibur, Lord of the Rings, Robin Hood, Elizabeth, to name a few. Yet, its a TV series.

    Main character (s):

The obvious main character is Eddard Stark. Complex emotions play in the subtext, as he is reminded throughout the show that he’d sworn an oath. The plot gets kicked into the second act when the King arrives and asks (or tells) Stark to join him at his court.

“Fun” characters like Tyrion Lannister, an outcast due to being a dwarf.

King Robert as a fornicating, hunting, feasting bear of a man.

The children, and the potential intrigues.

Sweet & innocent Daenerys married off to a savage who rapes her on her wedding night, but there is more there, I suspect

    Empath/Distress:

Stark’s distress at the execution, but he has a duty to uphold. Then the offer to join the court, which pulls Stark from his comfort zone.

    Layers/Open Loops:

Multiple mysteries. White Walkers. Robert thinks he’s done with the Targaryen, only we see Viserys Targaryen in exile plotting a return, with an army.

Jealousies, from all sides, during the main feast. Queen and Lady Stark talk about their children marrying.

The Queen loathes her husband. Will she support him later? Will she betray him?

    Inviting Obsession:

More so than the other pilots I’ve watched, this left me wanting to watch more.

The reaction of Stark to the death of his son, Bran. He was warned not to climb, but it was unexpected to have him being pushed.

The invitation on a quest, the potential for dragons, battles and all that accompanies epic stories set in foreign, yet familiar, lands.

    Assignment #1<div>

Thanks to David Wickenden for providing an example and courage to begin. I worked on another Netflix serial, “Unorthodox,” based on a memoir, since I am designing a show based on my own memoir about a journey and transformation from a religious to a secular worldview.

What I learned doing this was how spare the dialogue must be while conveying these five star points through the interplay of scenes, sets, images, actions, and tone.

    Big Picture Hooks

Will this coercively controlling community bring back the escaped wife to own and control her baby? <div>

    Amazing and Intriguing Character

Esty knows she is different from other girls, but she is trapped in a religious community that despises her as they despised her mother, who is mysteriously absent. The Hasidic culture, their clothing, laws, and ways of speaking are intriguing. </div><div>

    Empathy / Distress

Esty communicates the despair of her situation, and we learn she may be pregnant with a baby that raises the stakes and their determination to force her back. </div><div>

    Layers / Open Loops

Can Esty escape? Is she pregnant? What happened to her mother? Who is Esty? What are her dreams and how is she “different from other girls”? </div><div>

    Inviting Obsession

How does this pilot create the need to see every single episode?
    </div></div>

The clothing, customs, and beliefs of Hasidim are fascinating, and the mystery of Esty’s identity and mother suggest that this is situation that has occurred before.

Subject line: “White Collar” 5 Star Model.

What I learned from doing this assignment is the importance of developing in tandem an intriguing character that can draw an audience into his/her world, and crafting a plot that propels the protagonist into a world filled with conflict, intrigue and storyline questions.

    TV SHOW – “White Collar”

[1] Big Picture Hooks – What is the big hook of this show? Can Neil, a convicted felon, become an asset for the FBI and not give into temptation.

[2] Amazing and Intriguing Character Neil is charming, intelligent and knows the art world.

[3] Empathy / Distress Neil is in hopelessly in love with a woman whom he cannot find.

[4] Layers / Open Loops Will Neil be able to stay the course and not give into temptation? Similarly, will he be able to find his girlfriend and find out why she went into hiding? Can the FBI Agent, his handler, give him a fair shake?

[5] Inviting Obsession Given a second chance will Neil, a convicted felon, rise above his nature? As one of the best forgers and art thieves in the world, can he rise above his ego and that lifestyle?

II. Watching the pilot episode a second time.

[1] Big Picture Hooks – The plot is number #3 (a pro on a mission in a bigger world) Neil in WHITE COLLAR, is one of the most accomplished art thieves and forgers in the world. He is a thief employed by the FBI to catch art thieves, many of whom he knows and/or has worked with in the past.

[2] Amazing and Intriguing Character – Neil, a convicted felon and protagonist, is extraordinarily good-looking, charming and we the audience voyeuristically imagine ourselves in his shoes. Neither bitter nor a user, his kind-heartedness and come-what-may air is intoxicating.

[3] Empathy/Distress – Neil is pining over a lost love, sure something nefarious has occurred. Additionally, He has moments of weakness, where temptation nearly gets the best of him.

[4] Layers/Open Loops – Besides Neil’s obsession with his lost love, he also must rise above the temptation to return to the jet-setting, playboy world of a fugitive with money and the means to stay ahead of the law. The missing girl friend is an open loop as it his past and the people he used to know.

[5] Inviting Obsession – Neil’s love of art, the thrill of planning a heist and all that lifestyle entails is always in the back of his mind.

    5 Star Model for “LOST”
What I learned doing this assignment is how to identify the 5-star points that make a TV Series binge-worthy as an example for building my own.
    1. Big Picture Hooks
What is that ‘gargantuan quality” THING that kills!?!
    What happened to the airliner?
How will they survive, be found, avoid (or defeat) the THING?
Who are some of these most interesting characters?
    2. Amazing and Intriguing Character
Jack – the Doctor, knowledgeable, caring, leader, heroic
Kate – Attractive, uninjured, mysterious, transformable (already making changes)
Charlie – Rock star, humbled, good guy, fish-out-of-water
Hugo – Big guy, finds food, befriends pregnant lady, thoughtful
John Locke – Thinker, mysterious, ominous, knows something
Clair – Pregnant lady, strong, thoughtful, vulnerable
Sayid – Middle Eastern, helpful (builds fire), friendly
The Kwon’s – Asian Couple, keep to selves
    Jen – spoiled, myopic
Rose – Black lady sat next to Jack on plane, husband apparently gone
    3. Empathy / Distress
Crash victims, “what would I do in this situation?”, relate with many types of common people,
Initial shock, helpless, overwhelmed, want to help injured, hope to survive, fear of the unknown THING
    4. Layers / Open Loops
    Surviving & getting rescued
Avoid or kill the monstrous THING
    Each person’s – back story/abilities/personalities/wants, needs, desires.
    Signaling civilization
Physical & psychological wounds & transformable journeys
    Conflict resolutions
    5. Inviting Obsession
What the hell is that deadly THING that makes monstrous mechanical noises and kills.
How will different people interact/conflict/befriend/love/otherwise relate?
Who is the mysterious thinking guy (John Locke)?
    The dog?
Does the tail section come into play, (i.e. Rose’ husband)?
Will Clair have her baby on the island?

Hi Wayne – Cheryl can correct me but I think for the BIG PICTURE HOOK is what catches the interest and attention of the audience – what you wrote I think works best for the Open Loops. For Big Loop I will write – Survival on an estranged island/ A group of people fighting for survival on an estranged island or something like this.

      Best of luck,

TV Show: “Lost”. 5 Star Model

What I learned from doing this assignment is to look deeper for the meaning of what makes a show binge worthy. Go beyond the surface and see what makes you want to watch the next episodes.

    1. Big Picture Hooks: What is the big hook of this show?

The survivors of a plane crash are forced to work together in order to survive on a seemingly deserted tropical island.

    2. Amazing and Intriguing Character: What makes these main characters intriguing and interesting? The main character is Jack, he is intriguing because he’s a doctor with lots of knowledge and a possible alcohol problem. Kate is another main character, she is intriguing because she seems naïve, but she is a prisoner being brought back on the plane. Charlie is another main character; he is intriguing because he is part of a band and has a drug problem.

    3. Empathy/ Distress: What situation causes us to feel both empathy and distress for this character? I feel empathy for Jack because he is the only doctor on the island, and he must rescue and medically helps all the injured people. I feel distress for Jack because he himself has suffered a wound on his back but can’t heal himself needs help. I feel empathy for Kate because she is a prisoner but is a very nice woman who helped Jack sew up is back wound with a sewing kit. I feel distress for Kate when she goes with Jack and Charlie to find the trans receiver on the run back she losses them is all alone but uses the fear method Jack taught her. I feel empathy for Charlie because he is good in his famous Band, but you don’t know if he will ever play with them again.

    4. Layers/ Open Loops: What questions are created by this first episode that can only be answered by watching the entire season? Will they ever get off this deserted Island or will they be killed by an unknown monster.

    5. Inviting Obsession: How does this pilot create the need to see every single episode? The first way is to figure out will they get the trans receiver to work in order to call for help. Or will they ever be rescued because the Pilot said they were off the map before they crashed.

    4. What I learned doing this assignment is that I love the way the audience get thrown in without exposition or explanation for each scenario which just makes us more curious. (Yes, some exposition is given, but in such a way that the context demands it.)

BW EXAMPLE SHOW: Game of Thrones Synopsis

Men of the Night’s Watch encounter something sinister — White Walkers — beyond the Wall. Ned Stark, Lord of the North, executes sole survivor for deserting.

Dire wolf — the Stark similar — dies south of the wall after giving birth to six pups — one for each Stark child. John’s not a Stark.

Hand of King — John Arryn — is dead likely by nefarious means. King Robert asks Ned Stark to be Hand.

King Robert was in love with Ned’s now dead sister. He blames Targaryens — some of whom still live.

Vicerys Targaryen trades his sister in marriage to Khal Drogo in exchange for the Dothraki army.

Arryn’s wife — the sister of Ned’s wife — sends a message that the Lannisters murdered Arryn.

Bran catches Jamie Lannister, the Queen’s brother with the Queen (Cersei Lannister). Jamie attempts to murder the boy to cover their tryst.

    2. From that, make a list of the 5 Star Points for that show.

    Big Picture Hooks
Ned’s walking into a land mine. There’s going to be a battle for this throne. Everybody’s got a stake, every body’s got a secret.

    Empathy / Distress

Ned Stark — the last Hand was murdered, now he’s got the job.

Daenerys — being used as a pawn. She married off to a man she’s afraid of.

Layers / Open LoopsAsk this: What questions are created by this first episode that can only be answered by watching the entire season?

Who’s going to get the throne? Who’s going to make the first move?

Is Ned going to survive his new job?

Will Jaime and Cersei get caught?

    What’s Jon Snow’s backstory?

What are the White Walkers and what are they going to do?

Is Viserys going to march on King’s Landing with Drogo’s army?

What’s going to happen to Daenerys?

    Inviting Obsession

The audience wants to know who will win the throne, who will survive, and for answers / explanations for the mysteries in #3.

    5. Watch the same first episode A SECOND TIME while looking at your 5 Star Point analysis. This time, your purpose is to see beyond the obvious answers. Assume there is more to learn and discover it!

Bran was seeking answers about the White Walkers from the beginning — do they exist in current times

Jamie/Cersei murdered twice in the first episode to cover their affair — Arryn and Bran (attempted). What will they do next?

    RIverdale 5 Star Points

BIG PICTURE HOOKS – The crime of Justin Blosoom changing the city forever and the dynamic between characters.

INTRIGUING CHARACTER – ARCHIE -Mysterious, loves music and songwriting as a therapy or disclosure, has a secret relationship with his musical teacher, feels like he is responsible for his dad happiness.

EMPATHY / DISTRESS – Jason’s murder (distress), Cheryl’s pain (empathy), Archie and his musical teacher hearing the shot (distress), Betty being hurt when Veronica goes with Archie in the closet (empathy), Jason’s body in the river (distress), Veronica feeling sad at home after dance (empathy) etc.

OPEN LOOPS: Who killed Jason? Did Cheryl killed her own brother? What happened on the river? Is there other reason than the betrayal of her husband that Hermione moved to Riverdale with her daughter? Will Archie and Betty be together? Did Veronica knew Archie before moving in Riverdale? Did Archie’s dad sent the money to Hermione ? Is Archie Veronica’s step brother?

INVITING OBSESSION : Finding out who killed Jason.

From this 1st ASSIGNMENT I learned how to do the 5 Star Points and how easily we can superficially look into something. When I watched the second time #1 Episode I could see things I overlooked the first time. 😃

    Leona Heraty’s 5 Star Model

    Example Show: Lost

What I learned doing this assignment is… this show was a binge worthy hit because it meets the requirements of the 5 Star Model. There are so many layers to the plot and each character has subtext or secrets they’re hiding from the others. If I can master the 5 Star Model with my new show idea, I can also have a hit show like Lost!

    2. From that, make a list of the 5 Star Points for that show.

    1. Big Picture Hooks
Ask this: What is the big hook of this show? Passengers on an airplane crash into a deserted south sea island….but they are not alone! Something or someone is trying to kill them!

    2. Amazing and Intriguing Character
Ask this: What makes these main characters intriguing and interesting? Jack, the surgeon, is resilient, strong, brave and kind, but he was injured in the crash and has a drinking problem.

    3. Empathy / Distress
Ask this: What situation causes us to feel both empathy and distress for this character? We worry that his wounds will get infected and we worry if he will survive and why he is an alcoholic.

    4. Layers / Open Loops
Ask this: What questions are created by this first episode that can only be answered by watching the entire season?

    Why is Jack an alcoholic?

Why was Kate a prisoner being transported by a U.S. Marshall?

Is Sayid really a terrorist and did he bring down the plane?

Why is Sawyer so angry and sinister?

Why is Sun-Hua Kwon being controlled by Jin-Soo Kwon?

What or who is trying to kill them?

Why is this island so spooky and dangerous?

What went on, on this island, in the past?

Is this island a secret government facility?

Why would a polar beat be in a south pacific island?

    Will Walt’s dog survive?

    5. Inviting Obsession
Ask this: How does this pilot create the need to see every single episode? We need to see who will survive because we have empathy for the passengers and sorry about them. We know they each have secrets and we want to discover the answers to what they’re hiding from the others and why. We want to know who is trying to kill them and why and what is this island hiding? What’s really going on, on this mysterious island?

    BENT’S 5 STAR MODEL

what I learned doing this assignment is this …….. There is a need for depth because one thing leads to another from this depth. Layer after layer keeps the continuity going. There is something to dig into every episode from all that is established within the first one

    Big Picture Hooks
A government spy is sent to take care of business overseas by infiltrating a company.
The main protagonist has antagonist traits. He pushes his job competition into a moving bus.

Amazing character He suffers from depression.

    Layers / Open Loops

Why does he lack empathy? When he goes on assignment he brings his guitar and sings his plans at an open mic in a coffee shop.

    Inviting obsession –

How does he keep a relationship with his dad who seems to manipulate him for the good of the country.

How does he keep the relationship happy with is wife and his brother.

    Supernatural 5 Star Model

What I learned doing this assignment is that these 5 things really do have a big impact on your experience watching a pilot!

Big Picture Hooks. What is the big hook of this show?

Two brothers hunt the things that go bump in the night in search of their recently missing father and the thing that killed their mother 22 years ago.

Amazing and Intriguing Character. What makes these main characters intriguing and interesting?

Dean is committed to the life, Sam wants to live a normal one. They’re both highly skilled, but with different moral views. Their dad seems to have been an alcoholic who trained more than raised them, but was or was not that the right thing to do when he knows that monsters are real?

Empathy / Distress. What situation causes us to feel both empathy and distress for this character?

They’re in frequent life or death situations. They’re both funny. Their relationship has “jerk/bitch” moments as well as real issues that don’t seem solvable. They’re family.

Layers / Open Loops. What questions are created by this first episode that can only be answered by watching the entire season?

Will they find their dad? Will they come to an understanding? Will Sam get to go back to his normal life at some point? What killed their mom? What killed Jess?

Inviting Obsession. How does this pilot create the need to see every single episode?

They’re hot and compelling. There’s an endless supply of supernatural entities to provide the Monster Of The Week. There’s worldbuilding to do. I gotta watch the next one!

    SUPERNATURAL PILOT OUTLINE

22 years ago: Mom finds man in baby’s room, supernatural shit happening, it’s NOT her husband, he/it horrifically kills her (her body’s on the ceiling), house goes up in flames, dad takes baby and brother outside, no idea WTF just happened. He hands Sam to Dean, establishing their relationship right there honestly LOL. Dean is half brother, half dad, at 4.

Now: Sam is a law student with a cliché-gorgeous girlfriend. Someone breaks in, they fight – it’s his brother Dean. (They both fight real good!) Dad’s gone missing, on one of his “hunting trips”. They talk casually about poltergeists and stuff. Debate about whether he’s a good dad for teaching all this stuff. They haven’t found what killed their mom but they’ve helped a lot of people. They’ve been trained, more than raised.

Basically Dean is loyal and still hunting and Sam wanted to lead a normal life. But Dad’s missing and it’s suspicions and Dean convinces Sam to help him try to find their dad. Sam thinks he’ll be back in time for the law school scholarship interview on Monday, Jess is a little worried but supportive.

Now we meet a young man who sees the classic woman in white on the side of the road. He gives her a ride home, but it’s a long-abandoned house. She says “I can never go home” which was in the background of a voice note their dad had, in the course of his investigation. Then she somehow kills him.

Dean is way more confident than Sam about lying to cops and having fake ID’s and fraudulent credit cards, but Dean and Sam are actually a pretty good team – even if they then immediately fight about it.

Local teens tell a local tale of a girl who got murdered decades ago and who now asks for a ride and whoever gives her one, disappears forever. They research and find it was actually a suicide. She had called 911 an hour before, saying she found both her kids drowned in the bath. She’d jumped off the very bridge upon which Sam and Dean questioned those cops, that’s where the boy’s car was found.

Dean thinks Sam is running away from who he really is, Sam thinks who he really is, is a law student. As they’re fighting, they see the ghost woman (Constance), there on the bridge, doing her swan dive again – then their car roars to life without them. It tries to run them down.

Dean always uses rock band member names for his fake ID’s, that’s how they find out they just checked into the same hotel as their dad did (he does the same). They find protection spells, and research: the basic archetype of Constance’s afterlife is the “Woman In White” lore – the thing these victims have in common is that they’d have been happy to take advantage of her. Dad had a picture of the three of them.

The cops are onto them. Dean is spotted, and tells Sam to hightail it, which he does. Dean is under suspicion for the whole thing, having been found in a room full of victim info and “satanic stuff”, including the journal their dad kept – which Dean is clearly alarmed to see. (Later: Dad never goes anywhere without that thing.)

Sam follows their dad’s last lead to Constance’s husband. Dad was asking where she’s buried (so he can salt and burn her bones). He says their marriage was great but his face says they didn’t. Sam tells him the woman in white lore – their husbands cheated, they had moments of insanity and killed their children, then themselves, now they wander around killing unfaithful men they find. Constance’s husband is horrified and says he made mistakes but Constance would never have hurt their children.

Dean easily escapes from the police station as soon as they leave him alone, which was because Sam did a fake 911 call. She’s supposed to be buried in the back yard so that’s where dad should have gone. As they’re talking, Constance shows up in the back seat of Sam’s “borrowed” car. When he refuses to take her home, she possesses the car again, takes it home, says “I can never go home”. Then starts trying to kill him, but he’s not unfaithful so she has to try harder, starts attacking him – Dean shoots her, she dissipates.

Sam has realized that she’s AFRAID to go home, so he rams into the building with his car, since she’s maybe probably still in it? She picks up a photo of the kids, looks distressed, attacks the boys again. Then, water down the stairs, and the kids are standing at the top, they run into her in a scary hug, hellish disappearance of all three.

Now they have dad’s journal, they figure where he probably went next. (Small plot hole? Why are they so sure Constance didn’t kill him and he just wandered off?) Sam’s like that’s enough, I got that interview. Dean takes him home. Sam finds Jessica, dead in EXACTLY the same way that his mom died, gut wound, on the ceiling, room lights on fire. Dean hears him screaming, drags him out of there.

Well NOW they’re a team again. Sam says “We got work to do” and throws a weapon into their awesome trunk full of weapons we saw earlier.
