    Suzanne Baird Transformational Journey

    Lesson 1

What have I learned from this assignment? I learned that my Hero has a deeper inner life that I can draw stronger emotions from. It has helped me be more specific in how she starts and how she will change through her journey.

Who is the hero, and what is their character arc?

Daria is a single mother, widowed, raising a sick child. When her son dies, she realizes that certain laws in her state could have saved her son. As she discovers the dark money that has infiltrated her local government elections, she vows to enter local politics and change the laws for Citizens United.

    Internal journey:

From victim, quiet, obedient, and a rule follower to empowered, educated, activist, and leader.

    External journey:

After a “head down ” existence, she realizes that she is the agent of change needed for this fight. Daria engages her bi-partisan fellow workers and neighbors to call out a system of money politics that no longer represents the voters and breaks Citizens United.

    2. Fearful

    3. Powerless

    4. Victim mentality

    Deni B. Sher’s Transformational Journey

What I learned in this assignment is to dig deep into the protagonist. Where they start from at the beginning of the story, to where they end up and how important that character’s arc will be to the success of the story for the audience/reader. And, to not be afraid of the truth because it is a true story.

Transformation occurs when a character DENI is pushed outside HER box by some outside force ADDICTION OF HER SON and required to make shifts in HER behavior or thinking in order to survive (either figuratively or literally).

I am personally the hero in this true story.

INTERNAL JOURNEY: Deni went from feeling helpless (unable to save her son) to affect change by letting go, letting God, using creative visualization, prayer, projection and writing.

EXTERNAL JOURNEY: From a weak, codependent mother, easily manipulated by her son and fearful of her son dying, to a strong woman, facing addiction and codependency, and willing to do whatever it takes for both to be healthy and find a healthy relationship again.

    OLD WAYS:

    Ignorant of Addiction

    Head buried in sand (denial)

Didn’t want her son to die

Would do anything to keep him from failing

    Enabled him with money

    NEW WAYS:

    Knowledge of Addiction

    Let go and Let God

Accepted the truth that she was co-dependent and an enabler

    Stopped supporting him

    Faced the Truth about herself

    DENI’S OLD WAYS

Gullible, naïve, in denial, fearful of her son dying, blind to her own faults

    DENI’s NEW WAYS

Facing the Truth, accepting that her son might die without her enabling, understanding familial dysfunction.

    1. From this assignment, I learned the following:

The story can start to take shape rather effortlessly just by answering a few key questions about your protagonist. How easy!

    2. My Hero is Bethany and she was once possessed.

    Where she starts:

She finds it impossible to make a true love connection, let alone date, because of her past and the demon who possessed her (and still lurks around like a jealous ex)

    Where she ends up:

She fights for a relationship with the one guy who isn’t scared of her and permanently exorcizes the demon herself.

Internal Journey: From feeling unloved, ashamed, unworthy and oppressed to feeling worthy of love, strong enough to fight a demon and damn proud of it.

External Journey: Hiding who she is until her past scares away her suitors to exorcizing herself of her demon and pursuing a relationship.

    3. What are the Old Ways and New Ways?

    Old Ways:

    Hides her past

    Doesn’t fight for relationships

    Fearful she’s unlovable

    Has extreme dating anxiety

Relies on her church to help her manage the demon that still bothers her

    New Ways:

    Is open about her past

    Fights for her relationships

Loves herself and believes she is deserving of love

    Becomes great at dating

Takes her spiritual well-being into her own hands and rids herself of the demon

    Tom Trundle’s Transformational Journey

    The 30-Day Screenplay – 2023

    Lesson 1: The Transformational Journey

What I learned from doing this assignment is…

That even though my idea was outlined in one of the examples, I can bring a different perspective/analysis of my protagonist and of course (because it’s my life) my own spin.

Who is your Hero and what is their Character Arc that represents a transformation?

Jake was once a successful actor and model who over time let life and his addictions consume him. His last role was playing Santa Claus (without padding). As a result of years of suffered abuse he has jumped up to over 330 lbs and all of his relationships have fallen apart, his family, including his 3 children, his love life and his career. He feels hopeless and beyond saving, until a friend’s death (the one who cast him as Santa) gives him a new perspective and desire to transform his mind, his body, and his life.

    Internal Journey:

Learning to love himself as he is, and as he will be.

    External Journey:

Finding new friends and companions to help him on his journey. Taking the actions to lose the weight, give up his addictions, repair the broken relationships and find new ones in hope all while honoring his friend who passed away.

    Jake’s Old Ways:

    1. Procrastinator

    2. Depressed

    3. Abusive to himself and a doormat to others

    Jake’s New Ways:

    1. Finds love for himself by taking care of his addictions

    2. Repairs damage he’s done to himself by taking care of his health (mental and physical)

    3. Gains support and love from his community and becomes an inspiration to others so they can gain their freedom from addictions too.

Wow, there’s going to be some amazing movies written in the next month!

    Joy Geldard-Smith’s Transformational Journey

What I learned doing this assignment is… that structure helps move creativity forward! OK, so that’s not completely new to me, but thinking about the transformation in this way makes it easier to move forward. The prompts help to stimulate ideas, and even if they’re not all gold at this stage, they’re ideas that I can move forward with and refine as I go.

Who is your Hero and what is their Character Arc that represents a transformation?

I write romcoms and usually do this sort of thing for both sides of the relationship.

Accountant Madison is accused of being boring but dreams of stand-up comedy glory. For inspiration, she gets locked in an escape room with Jose, who turns out to be a pretentious performance artist who turns every puzzle into a work of art.

    Madison:

Internal journey: trying to prove to herself that she isn’t just a boring accountant, no matter what all her friends and family say.

External journey: she embraces her creative side as well as her analytical side and launches her stand-up comedy career.

    Jose:

Internal journey: all about validating who he is as a person and the choices he’s made so far in his life, rejecting the ‘starving artist’ stereotype.

External journey: becomes somewhat famous as an artist, but because of his company in the escape rooms, not just because of his performance art and the work he creates.

    3. What are the Old Ways and New Ways?

    Madison:

Old ways – factual, analytical, trained to stay inside the box

New ways – free-thinking, creative, takes more risks and has more adventures

    Jose:

Old ways – trying to prove that he is truly an artist, comparing himself to others, a free spirit that isn’t really free

New ways – being more authentic, caring less about critical acclaim (and getting more of it!), sees the value of structure

    Lesson 1: The Transformational Journey

What I learned from doing this assignment is…

That audience must CARE DEEPLY about the protagonist’s transformational journey.

Who is your Hero and what is their Character Arc that represents a transformation?

Tony is an ultra-successful business executive who returns home after 15 years to visit his dying best friend, and confront the fatal decision they made together before he left home.

    Internal Journey:

From the “next big thing” to “just doing what makes him really happy”

    Old Ways:

    1. Measures happiness by “#s on his paycheck”

    2. Afraid of people in his new life finding out about his family

    3. Needs a father figure to replace his own

    4. Would do anything to protect his “corporate family”

    New Ways:

    1. Measures happiness by “living”

    2. Not afraid to confront his family and live with it

    3. Accepts he is his “own person” and doesn’t need a father figure to drive him

    4. Does what it is right, not what is right for the corporation he works for

    Lesson 1: Transformational Journey

What I learned? I have to dig deeper into these characters than I wanted to!

Who is your hero and what is their character arc that represents a transformation?

There are two heroes: JP and TC

JP goes from being a self-contained, introverted/private individual with a big secret to being more open and honest about who and what she is.

Her external journey? She smiles more! She goes from being resigned to being alone to becoming joyful (and grateful) having found the love of her life.

Her internal journey? Grappling with having been born as a “caul bearer” and having related abilities to embracing and owning it regardless of popular opinion.

TC after watching JP for over twenty years, takes a big risk and speaks to her. It opens the door to the everlasting love he’s always wanted.

His external journey? He begins to relax, calms down knowing this highly intelligent woman loves him. He throws away his care free, playboy image to finding security and peace with the love of his life.

    His internal journey?

TC looses his insecurity and accepts that he’s worthy of JP, that she accepts him “as is”, that JP is no longer an out of reach dream or fantasy after spending two decades thinking she wouldn’t pay any attention to him, that he was “unworthy.”

LOG LINE: This is a love story between two unique people that’s been on hold for twenty years – before and after death.

CONCEPT: After watching the love of his life for for twenty years before peaking,TC finally speaks to her the day after she (JP) makes an inquiry about him to her friend, Christine. TC becomes a catalyst for a series of “coincidences” that forces her to own the psychic abilities she was born with including being a “caul bearer.” It allows them to continue their relationship after TC drowns in a suspicious boating accident.

What I learned in this lesson is the importance of the “old ways” and “new ways”. I’ve heard about the internal and external journey before, but defining the ways really helps narrow down the behaviors/person/characteristic of each aspect in the journey. It’s the “show” of the change.

My hero’s name is Michelle, a wife of a well known realtor, who finds out her husband’s secret and dangerous career when he uses her as the fall guy for his crimes.

Internal Journey: From feeling helpless, passive, and insecure to feeling confident to confront her husband and defend herself.

External Journey: From a passive “trophy wife” who takes directions from anyone to a confident, bad- ass woman who takes the lead to take down her husband and his minions.

Old Ways: Asks for permission, would never show off her talents in her self defense class, willing to fall to the background.

New Ways: Takes the lead, doesn’t see herself as “showing off” and owns her skills, doesn’t let people take advantage of her.

    Chuck Czech’s Transformational Journey

What I Learned: It’s important to clearly define story parameters – in this case character transformation – early in the creative process. Also, from the video on concept analysis I learned that when you have a complicated concept you have to return to the seed of the idea to convey it to the reader.

Who is the Hero: Ronan Cambridge (20s) is autistic and has been driving US highways for three years straight, never stopping more than an hour. If he stops too long, the device in his trunk will open the doorway to another dimension and release a monstrous all-consuming organism that can destroy the Earth in a matter of days. Ronan is the only survivor of a failed research project, led by his father, that sought to explore the multiverse.

Internal Journey: Throughout his life, Ronan has been dependent on his father and has not fit in with groups; in this story, he learns to function within a group and ultimately assert himself as leader.

External Journey: At the beginning of the story, Ronan is cursed to driving without end, alone and without direction; over time he’s able to assemble a team, orient them on the predicament, challenge them, and ultimately lead them to a solution.

    Old Ways:

    Isolated and lonely

    Dependent and deferential

    Awkward and outcast

    New Ways:

    Integrated and social

    Independent and influential

    Awkward and accepted
