Karen Christine´s ASSIGNMENT 1 – Layers in BIG LITTLE LIES

What I learned doing this assignment is that I didn´t find it that easy to differentiate between what is a plot layer and what is a character layer. Especially in a show with 5 main characters that each have an influence on the plot. Well, I did my best 😉 And it cleared my view on my own project which I am grateful for.

    Plot Surface:

The school year in Monterey, CA, has just begun. It´s the first school day at elementary school. We watch 5 mums and other parents bring their kids to school.

Layer 1: We watch from the beginning that a dead body was found. Who he/she is and what happened will be revealed much later. Police is investigating.

Layer 2: A little girl is attacked on that first day. A boy is accused. A competition starts: How is taking whose side?

Layer 3: After it´s been revealed what happened during the charity event and who killed Perry, the 5 moms conspire against the police and against whole Monterey. And: against Perry´s mother.

    Character Surface: JANE

Jane is new in town. She is a single mom and her son Ziggy starts first grade with the other kids.

Layer 1: Hidden Agenda: She is running away from something.

Layer 2: Hidden Character History: She has been raped by Ziggy´s father.

Layer 3: Secret Identity: we do not learn much about her past, we only know that she does not answer her son´s questions about his father, and is still running away from what happened. After the death of Perry she is part of the conspiracy.

Layer 4: Wound: She still cannot trust another man and let him come closer.

Layer 5: Competition: with Renata, the mother of Amabelle who was attacked.

Karen Christine´s Plot and Character Layers:

    My show THE BANKER

What I learned doing this assignment is that the more I take the assignments and possible answers with ease and try to throw my ideas on the page as fast as possible, the more I discover other layers and “worlds” behind the surface world. Interesting and very rewarding!

PLOT LAYERS – Story beneath the story:

Major scheme: A banker is being scammed in a big way. His money and that of his wealthy clients is gone.

Mystery revealed: Wirepuller of the scam is the team around Jonas (he, Juli and Emma), instructed by someone even higher (whom we never see – or only at the end, and this is more than one person, it is rather an institution or movement).

Thought the story was one thing, but it is another: WD is being used to cause the insolvency of a whole bank – and maybe even more banking houses.

Major shift in Meaning: It´s not only about WD. It´s about the demolition of a whole banking institution.

Hidden history: There is a reason why WD was chosen. And the reason is false step in his past, way before he started his banking career.

Hidden plan: To destroy the banking world as it was.

Major betrayal: A multitude of people will be betrayed and scammed. And even Jonas, who is a relative of one of the big wirepullers, is being used (he is not the real son as the man found out, he sacrifices him).

    2. CHARACTER LAYERS – identity beneath the identity.

    Wolf-Dieter, WD

Secret identity: he is responsible for the huge loss of his own money and that of his clients, pretends to be the one that “will take care of it all” – maybe calls together a team of “experts” to help him (those experts will probably not exist, he does everything by himself and with Emma´s help).

Character intrigue: We admire how he sets this all up, and stays cool at the same time (the born problem-solver), though it extremely pulls at him. He manages to handle all the different levels – the bank, the crypto world, and becoming an expert in a formerly unknown field to straighten his huge mistake (let himself be manipulated).

Hidden relationships and conspiracies: with Emma, maybe for a while with his neighbor and old friend, who works at the police

Hidden Character History: he slept with a woman in his past long before he started his career. He forgot about it, and she never told him that she gave birth to a child. She didn´t even tell her spouse, until now. It turns out: The spouse (now husband) is WD´s biggest rival.

    Emma:

Secret identity: She is part of the scammer team around Jonas.

Character intrigue: We like her from the beginning. She wants the best for her unborn child knowing that the father is not the right man for her on the longterm. Contrary to WD her perspective is more open. She is strong though in a week position right now (pregnant, only few money). We want to know if she can really help him get the whole money back – while she is still together with Jonas. And we want to experience how this whole story ends for her. Will she be happy in the end and get the life she deserves?

Hidden relationships and conspiracies: with Jonas (WD does not know at the beginning), with WD (Jonas does not know), with all of them (her boss at the restaurant and her family does not know).

Hidden Character History: have to think about this. First thought: Jonas´ father urged her to have sex with her. She wants to come back at him (second reason why she helps WD). Jonas does not know.

    Jonas:

Secret identity: Thinking about this question I might try another path and let him decide not only to work for the inner crypto circle but to become a rival of the big wirepullers. Will let this sink a bit.

Character intrigue: He looks unconspicuous, and therefore we underestimate the damage he can bring to another person – like WD. Later we discover that he has a heart (contrary to Juli), and tries to somewhat save WD or protect him from more harm when he finds out WD is his real father. But it will be too late.

Hidden relationships and conspiracies: Jonas and Juli might create a hidden relationships when she manages to seduce him. And also on the scamming side they might develop an alliance against Emma without her knowing.

Hidden Character History: Jonas is the son of WD – result of WD´s false step at a very young age. Even Jonas does not know, but always had the feeling that something was not right in his family. Even is mother did not tell him and his father until now. Result of that was that Jonas acted out his feelings in his teenager years by torturing others. He was never caught and found guilty. This encouraged him to take the scamming and torturing to a much higher level now.

    Juli:

Secret identity: The intelligent good looking young women is calculating every move she´s doing to get to the top of the crypto insider circle.

Character intrigue: She seems to fulfill Jonas´ orders, but behind the curtain there is more going on. Here and there we notice that she finds Jonas attractive and we get the notion that she would take what she wants, knowing well that Jonas and Emma are a couple and are awaiting a baby. Juli is a Machiavellian in a beautiful and appealing disguise.

Hidden relationships and conspiracies: She´s in a sexual (and merely that) relationship with one or even several of the big wirepullers. Jonas and Emma don´t know that. And even the different men don´t know that.

Hidden Character History: We will get to know later that she has a programming background and was popular and famous for her ability to program illegal stuff in college.

    3. Organize them each into a possible sequence of reveals.

    Plot Surface:

Layer 1: WD and his clients at the bank are being scammed in a big way.

Layer 2: While the police and the bank are investigating, WD is doing his research on his own.

Layer 3: The world of Jonas, Emma and Juli.

Layer 4: The inner crypto circle with the goal to destroy the banking world as it was and to create a decentralized banking system.

Layer 5: WD deciding to ruin those who ruined him: either his bank that did not trust him – or even the inner crypto circle with the help of Emma.

Layer 6: WD´s past and his relationship to Jonas´s mother and father.

Layer 7: End of WD´s marriage and family life as it was – and the beginning of his new love and path.

    Character Surface Wolf-Dieter:

Layer 1: the clean banker who wants to put everything back into order

Layer 2: the husband who has fantasies about his assistant which he never lived out

Layer 3: the wounded personality that decides not to give up but to take revenge

Layer 4: the banker who dives into the crypto world to become an expert himself

Layer 5: the banker who changes allegiance and wants to destroy the bank that destroyed his life

Layer 6: the banker/crypto expert that now wants to take the next step and become the leader of the inner crypto circleDevelopment: from victim to man of action in a way he would never believed it, if you told him a couple of months ago.

What I learned doing this assignment is how this can be useful building the series bible. By arranging the series’ highlights in a certain order, you can see when and how these mysteries and identities will be exposed. It helps to create a vision for the longevity of the show.

LIKE THE JONESES – PLOT AND CHARACTER LAYERS

Major scheme revealed – When Henry learns about Willie using his inheritance to fund his business, Henry agrees to keep quiet if Willie makes him CEO.

Mystery revealed – Henry and Heather’s father gave Willie their inheritance for safekeeping.

Thought the story was one thing, but it is another – We believed that Pete and Willie had beef over Elaine allegedly leaving Pete to be with Willie. We find out that it was Pete that learned of Willie and Elaine’s arrangement to get cannabis to Oregon. Pete went behind their back and undercut them.

Major shift in Meaning – Noelle learns that her father (Pete) only helped to fix things with Tony so that Tony would work for him. She questions Tony’s values.

Hidden history – Willie never went to college in California. He used his grandfather’s money to buy a plot of land on an illegal weed farm, which is how he and Elaine’s business started.

Hidden plan – Tony and Adam have a plan to start their own cannabis business.

Major betrayal – Tony leaves Jones Farmacy and eventually goes to work for their competition, Green Diamonds, which is Pete Roberts’ company.

    2. Brainstorm a list of possible CHARACTER layers.

    CHARACTER LAYERS – TONY JONES

Secret identity Anthony William Jones II, chemical engineering and business major, college baseball star, entrepreneur

Character intrigue – He considers himself sober (from alcohol), but he still smokes weed. He is very intelligent and business savvy, but hardly ever shows it around his family. Like he has repressed it.

Hidden relationships and conspiracies – Tony and Adam start meeting more. Adam tries to convince him to start his own business.

Hidden Character history – Tony was living his dream life–wife, kid, business going well, but lost it all when his drinking got out of hand.

CHARACTER LAYERS – Noelle Roberts, ex-wife of Tony Jones

Secret identity – Sole heir to the Pete Roberts estate

Character intrigue – She still has feelings for Tony. Doesn’t seem to act in her own best interest.

Hidden relationships and conspiracies – She tells Adam exactly what to say to Tony to convince him to go after the startup grant. With Tony focused on his own company, she can take over Green Diamonds.

Hidden Character history – Noelle and Tony were college sweethearts and married shortly thereafter. She is the only child of Pete Roberts and his wife Cheryl, sole heir to the Green Diamond empire. We later learn that she has at least two half siblings, but they are not included in Pete’s will.

CHARACTER LAYERS – Dr. Elaine Roberts

Secret identity – Holistic healer. She’s a medicine woman, specializing in Eastern medicine. She’s not a doctor, she’s a healer. She prescribes medical marijuana for most ailments.

Character intrigue – She’s always been called “Doctor Elaine Roberts.” She knows her shit so much that no one even questions her education.

Hidden relationships and conspiracies – Tony confides to her about not feeling valued in the company. She attempts to get Willie to reconsider the CEO appointment. She confronts Henry and offers him money to go away and leave Willie alone.

Hidden Character history – She doesn’t have a medical degree. She has an estranged son that grew up with his father.

    CHARACTER LAYERS – WILLIE JONES

Secret identity – Studied “plant science” on an illegal weed farm, not UCLA.

Character intrigue – He is self taught in all things agriculture and hustlenomics. He doesn’t’ need a college degree to do what he does, yet he lies about having one anyway. He admires Tony, but refuses to give him more responsibility in the company.

Hidden relationships and conspiracies – Willie still has contact with the illegal farmers in Cali. He reaches out to them when business starts dropping. They devise a plan to help him dismantle Pete’s operation.

Hidden Character history – Although he never formally went to college, he befriended several students, got paid to do their homework, and taught himself the same curriculum. He used the money his grandfather left him for college to buy a plot of land on an illegal weed farm.

    3. Organize them each into a possible sequence of reveals.

Plot Surface: Tony is VP at Jones Farmacy, however, he is not given much responsibility by his father, Willie who is the CEO. Due to Tony’s struggle with alcohol and bad decision making in the past, Willie is mindful of what he will and won’t allow Tony access to in the company. After learning that Willie is taking a leave of absence, and his cousin Henry will be acting CEO, Tony announces that he is leaving Jones Farmacy. With no plan to speak of, Tony runs into Pete Roberts, his father’s nemesis and competition, who offers him a position as VP at his company, Green Diamonds.

Layer 1: Mystery – Of all the children, why would Willie leave Henry in charge. Although, he and Willie have a great uncle/father figure-son relationship, Henry is the least connected to the family and the company. Why wouldn’t Willie leave Tony in charge. Tony has been sober over ten years, has a business degree, and is knowledgeable of the day to day operations of Jones Farmacy.

Layer 2: Hidden Agenda – Pete knows Tony is top notch in business. He knows family is important to Tony. He also knows why Willie overlooks Tony to lead the company, which he uses to his advantage. Pete knows Tony can move his company ahead of Jones Farmacy, so he makes Tony an offer he can’t refuse. He offers to mend things between Tony and his ex-wife and son, in exchange for Tony working for him.

Layer 3: Conspiracy – Pete and Tony create a mastermind plan to turn Green Diamonds into a cannabis powerhouse, surpassing Jones Farmacy as the biggest black owned brand.

Layer 4: Sabotage – Willie and Henry go after Tony’s family, planting seeds in Noelle’s mind that Tony is using her to secure his position at the company. Willie consults with the illegal farmers on how to beat Pete. He arranges for Pete’s fertilizer to be swapped, sending instead toxic growth fertilizer to destroy Pete’s crops.

Character Surface: Tony Jones is an ambitious VP of Jones Farmacy (his father’s company), but is only given menial, gopher tasks in the company.

Layer 1: Hidden Character history – Tony was living his dream life–wife, kid, business going well, but lost it all when his drinking got out of hand.

Layer 2: Wound – His wife left and he now has limited access to his only child due to his reckless past.

Layer 3: Secret identity Anthony William Jones II, chemical engineering and business major, college baseball star, entrepreneur. He is very intelligent and business savvy, but hardly ever shows it around his family. Like he has repressed it.

Layer 4: Competition – After being overlooked by his father for the CEO position, although he is the most qualified, Tony leaves the company in search of a better opportunity. Pete Roberts, his father’s number one competitor and nemesis makes him an offer he can’t refuse.

Layer 5: Hidden Agenda – Although Tony is doing great at Pete’s company, his ultimate goal is to be in business for himself, with the help of his friend Adam.

Character Surface: Willie Jones is the founder and CEO of Jones Farmacy, a publicly traded cannabis company.

Layer 1: Hidden Agenda – When Henry learns about Willie using his inheritance to fund his business, Henry agrees to keep quiet if Willie pays him out or makes him CEO. Willie knows Tony is the most qualified, but can afford to pay Henry out, but opts to make him CEO.

Layer 2: Wound – He was overburdened with responsibility by his own father. He admires Tony’s work ethic, but refuses to give him more responsibility in the company. He feels too much responsibility may overwhelm him and cause a relapse.

Layer 3: Hidden Character history – Although he never formally went to college, he befriended several students, got paid to do their homework, and taught himself the same curriculum. He used the money his grandfather left him for college to buy a plot of land on an illegal weed farm.

Layer 4: Competition: Willie consults with the illegal farmers to devise a plan to bring down Pete.

Character Surface: Noelle Roberts, daughter of Pete Roberts, ex-wife of Tony Jones, mother of Tony’s only child

Layer 1: Hidden Agenda – When paternity documents came for Pete, she destroyed them, never informing Pete that he has a set of twins in California. Thus making her sole heir to Pete Roberts’ estate.

Layer 2: Secret identity – Half sister to Peyton and Eli Roberts.

Layer 3: Wound – She still has feelings for Tony. Has the worst luck with men. Doesn’t seem to act in her own best interest.

Layer 4: Competition – She tells Adam exactly what to say to Tony to convince him to go after the startup grant. With Tony focused on his own company, she can take over Green Diamonds.

    KZ’s Plot and Character Layers

What I learned doing this assignment is that serial television allows for an entire world to unfold, and that adding multiple layers of intrigue creates plot opportunities.

    Assignment #2: MURDER MY DARLINGS

PLOT LAYERS – Story beneath the storyline

    Major scheme revealed:

Michelle is trying to set Oliver up to be murdered in the place of the Detective

    Mystery revealed:

The murders seem to have been committed by a beast. It turns out to be a result of Tony’s parentage.

Thought the story was one thing, but it is another:

A straightforward murder mystery is happening on two levels, with real people and with Nolan’s creations in his supernatural thrillers

    Major shift in Meaning:

Once Oliver realizes what’s at stake, he gets to work trying to rewrite the narrative

    Hidden history:

Nolan killed someone so that he could write realistically about murder

    Hidden plan:

Michelle seems like she’s trying to protect Oliver, but in fact she’s trying to bring him to Nolan’s attention so that she can save the Detective for herself.

    Major betrayal

Oliver knows someone has been feeding Nolan his secret history. He feels it could be Tony, Michelle or Indigo.

CHARACTER LAYERS – Identity beneath the identity

    Secret identity:

Oliver has amnesia and is trying to find out who he is.

    Character intrigue:

Tony discovers proof that Nolan has written about Oliver, and he’s jealous

    Hidden relationships and conspiracies:

Michelle tries to turn Oliver against Tony.

    Hidden character history:

Oliver discovers that Michelle had a relationship with Nolan and suspects that she’s jealous.

    3. Organize them into a possible sequence of reveals

    Plot Surface:

A writer of supernatural thrillers who avenges his grievances against people by putting them in his novels and making them do awful things.

    Layer 1:

He had people sign releases when they were vulnerable and needy so that he could do whatever he wanted with them in fiction with impunity.

    Layer 2

Increasingly, he needs to experience things in real life to write convincingly in fiction

    Layer 3

A Detective is investigating a murder in the building.

    Layer 4

Nolan is insanely jealous of Tony

    Character Surface: MICHELLE

Michelle is the nosy superintendent of the building into everyone’s business

    Layer 1: Hidden Agenda

She wants to derail the plot that Nolan intends, which is that Tony will become involved with the detective and then kill him.

    Layer 2: Hidden Character History

Michelle was involved with Nolan when she was Michael, before she transitioned to a woman

    Layer 3: Secret identity

She knows the truth about the two worlds

    Layer 4: Wound

Nolan lost interest in her when she became a woman
