Benita. Lesson 11. TURNING POINT. I found that I needed a few extra scenes.

ACT 1 Scenes leading up to T.P.

    INT. PUB – DAY

After work, Marty overhears two men talking about GEORGE GODWIN, a wealthy villain who has gone away on holiday. Marty takes note that his mansion will be empty.

    INT. MARTY’S HOUSE – NIGHT

Marty tells Mary he is going out on a ‘little expedition.’ Mary says she needs the car. Marty will have to use his vintage car.

    EXT. LOCK-UP – NIGHT

Marty tests his vintage car, then drives out of the lock-up into the street.

    INT/EXT. AVENUE – NIGHT

Marty drives slowly past George Godwin’s mansion, looking to see if the drive is empty. He parks his car some distance further down the avenue. Marty gets out of his car. He is dressed in dark clothes. A holdall is slung across his back. He glances around. No-one about. He walks towards George’s house.

EXT. FRONT OF MANSION – NIGHT

Marty walks cautiously down the short drive. He keeps close to the laurel bushes and moves around to the back of the house.

    TURNING POINT SCENE.

    INT. STUDY – NIGHT

A torchlight shines across the carpeted floor. Marty, jacket hood up, walks slowly, placing one foot in front of the other, his shoes are enclosed in plastic bags. His holdall is on his back. Marty swings his torch. The light picks up –

Glass-topped desk with a large computer and a mass of computer kit. A bookcase with one book.

Marty moves closer and shines the torch on wall. He scrutinises a picture of the Algarve. The picture is fastened to the wall and hinged. Marty swings the picture. It reveals the black mass door of a safe.

Marty holds his breath, listening. The muffled sound of a dog barks in the distance. Marty swings his holdall to the floor. He adjusts his glasses and gets to work opening the safe.

    LATER

Marty locks the safe and replaces the picture. He slings the holdall on his back and retraces his steps to the door.

    INT. Hall – night

Marty walks briskly towards the front door. Stairs curve upwards to his right. He reaches out to open the door, when –

    The door flies open.

The tall figure of George Godwin fills the doorway. He is outlined against light flooding in from an overhead lamp outside. George’s shoulder bag slips off and falls to the floor.

    Marty freezes in shock.

George reaches into his coat pocket and pulls out a gun.

Marty’s hand grips his torch. He starts shaking, rooted to the spot.

    George points the gun, menacingly.

    GEORGE Move.

Marty takes a step forward in panic. Both men move forward at the same time. Marty loses his footing and slips sideways. The bodies of both men entwine.

The gun is sandwiched between them.

    BANG!

George falls away and slumps to the floor.

Marty steps back. Blood oozes down the front of his hooded jacket. He stares down at the floor.

George is lying still, one arm stretched out. The gun is in a loose hold in his fingers.

    A profound silence.

Marty’s chest heaves as his breathing returns.

The sound of a sharp CLICK.

Marty jerks upright, eyes staring in terror.

The hall dims. The overhead lamp outside has switched off.

Marty shines his torch down on George’s crumpled body. There is no movement.

Marty goes to the open door and peers out. The light comes on again., It shows George’s wheeled suitcase. Marty lifts the suitcase into the hall and closes the door.

    The light switches off again.

Marty shines his torch onto George’s body. He squats down and feels for a pulse at George’s neck. He nudges George’s shoulder. No sign of life.

Marty stands. He glances at the front door and shakes his head. He turns and heads towards the kitchen.

    INT. UTILITY ROOM – NIGHT.

Marty unlocks the back door and slips outside.

    EXT. BACK GARDEN – NIGHT

Marty makes his way to a side gate. He opens the gate and closes it behind him. Outside, Marty pulls off his gloves, removes his plastic shoe coverings and stuffs them in his pockets. CUT.

Doug Booth – Turning point: Too much fun! I suspect the sledding will start getting tougher, going forward – but – whoa! I hope everyone else is doing well! Don’t know if we have a “chat function” – but I’m cheering everyone in our group along – and hope to get some good vibes from the rest of the gang when I find myself stuck in a ditch by the side of the road, down the road a way!

    DAY 11 ASSIGNMENT

INT. REAL ESTATE OFFICE – DAY

CAMERA starts on the REAL ESTATE POSTER (same as in the airport) – moving to Nick, looking at it – as he’s laughing to himself… and we see that the same “elegant real estate agent” pictured – is in the room, in the flesh!

Nick signs the requisite documents – sitting in front of Scott’s desk (the president of the company) – as Shania and JEROME (the in-the-flesh guy pictured in the poster) look on.

    SHANIA

    Excellent! Jerome… he’s all yours!

Jerome gives Nick a critical look – flicks an imaginary fleck of dust off Nick’s shoulder

    JEROME

    Wardrobe budget?

Shania and Scott exchange a look.

    SHANIA

    You tell me.

    Off Jerome’s smile…

    DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. EXCLUSIVE MEN’S STORE – DAY

Nick, now looking very sharp, exits the store. Jerome gives him an appraising look.

Nick gives him a questioning look in reply.

Jerome makes a “comme ci, comme ca” gesture…

    And Nick laughs!

    DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. AMAZING HARLEM MANSION – DAY

Think the 1860’s Bailey Mansion on St. Nicholas Ave or the Shinasi Mansion on Riverside Drive. Or – the Prendergast Msnsion on W. 137th St.? Hahaha! (Check out Lincoln Childs and Douglas Preston for some really fun books!)

    Nick and Jerome enter.

    JEROME

Here we are! First open house… tomorrow1

Nick is amazed! It is… archetypically amazing!

    JEROME

You’ll greet the people as they come in – get them to sign in – and then I’ll take over and show them around. rear

    NICK

    What… a… place!

    Jerome reacts to someone OS.

    JEROME

Oh – Carl! Meet Nick – he’ll be helping me with tomorrow’s open house.

CARL (the owner-I’m thinking “Carl Weathers”, Rocky II) – comes down from upstairs.

    CARL

    Hey!

    JEROME

    It’s Carl’s place.

Carl makes the same “comme ci, comme ca” gesture Jerome made before.

    JEROME

Alice Holstein was his Grandma – and Casper Holstein was her poppa.

    He looks to Nick.

    JEROME

    (realizing Nick is clueless)

    Oh. You’re a foreigner…

    NICK

Hey – Canton, Ohio – definitely in the U.S. of A.!

    Carl and Jerome exchange looks.

    CARL

    Foreigner.

The three of them are walking through the mansion now, as Jerome is showing off its many features to Nick, as they walk and talk.

    JEROME

(as if explaining to a child)

You’ve heard of the Godfather of Harlem? Carl’s great-granddaddy was the Godfather of the Godfather of Harlem!

    (a beat)

Virgin Islands to Harlem, to U.S. Navy, to Wall Street…

    CARL

    (shrugs)

Of course, in those days, he was a…

    JEROME

    (correcting him)

…trusted associate of a Master of the Universe and learned all the twists and turns of money…

    CARL

    (appreciating Jerome’s tribute)

…which he then applied to the streets of Harlem! In a fair way – so everyone had an equal chance…

    JEROME

…of losing their rent money – or hitting it big! Which Carl’s Great-Grandpapa Casper always did…

    CARL

…which he then used to give back to send neighborhood kids to summer camp, helped local businesses get started, kept the Church’s heating bills paid…

A pointed look between Carl and Jerome.

    JEROME

    Amen…

    CARL

And paid local kids’ college tuition… in full!

    Jerome smiles.

    JEROME

    Morehouse – Alpha Kappa Phi!

    CARL

He was a helluva guy. I never met him, but my Grandma Alice told me…

    (beat)

She would have never sold – even though the family fortune was pretty much given away to the community…

    The front doorbell RINGS!

    JEROME

    (reacting)

Go time! Places, Nick! Carl – off scene!

As Nick hustles off to answer the door…

    Jerome grins.

    JEROME

And – best of all, Nickololo – I have yet to tell you about… the HIDDEN TREASURE!!!

    Of Nick’s look…

    DISSOLVE TO:

    SEQUENCE OF SCENES

Of folks coming into the open house – some with agents, some on their own – some incredibly elegant and “loaded for bear” – others clearly not. Some looking for an amazing home, some curious neighborhood folks, others clearly emotionless investors – mentally tearing down the historic residence and visualizing a steel and glass 30 story struture in its place (more on these guys later). Jerome takes the various hand-offs from Nick and escorts them all off and away.

    DISSOLVE TO:

JEROME AND NICK TAKING A BREAK

    NICK

    How’s it goin?

Jerome makes the comme ci, comme ca gesture.

    JEROME

I want to get the price up – but the truth is, we’ve already got a solid offer.

    NICK

    You and Carl go back?

    JEROME

I grew up two doors down. Carl and me – rich kid, poor kid – but didn’t make no difference. We were cool. And I loved me some Grandma Alice!

    (beat)

Went to Pastor (so and so’s) church every Sunday. We were a neighborhood.

    Nick gets the subtext.

    NICK

    Were?

    JEROME

Too bad Carl never found the treasure.

    The bell RINGS again.

    JEROME

    (interrupting himself)

    Showtime!

    AT THE DOOR

A vaguely-seen “someone” through the frosted glass front door. Nick opens the door and lets them in.

    DISSOLVE TO:

INSERT SHOT – DETAIL OF PARLOR FLOOR’S INTRICATE WOODWOORK

    DISSOLVE TO:

    NICK

as he is signing yet another couple and their agent into the open house… when he hears a CRY from upstairs.

    NICK

    (reacting – worried)

Excuse me – be right back!

He takes off up the stairs…

Just as someone (the person vaguely seen through the frosted glass front door from before) comes barreling down from above and knocks Nick back on his butt as he charges past…

And slams out the front door and is gone!

Nick struggles up – as the new arrivals look to their agent, aghast…

    AGENT

Right! We can still make E 63rd St – Uber’s on me!

And they all rush out as fast as they can go…

    EXT. MANSION

…though carefully opening the front door to make sure the hoodie guy isn’t still there. He isn’t, and they rush out!

    WIFE

(to husband – “told you so”)

    As I was saying….

    CUT TO:

    INT. MANSION

    Nick runs up the stairs…

    UPPER SUITE

Jerome is on the ground, bleeding out.

    NICK

    Jerome!!!

    Jerome’s hand flutters.

    JEROME

    (weakly)

    All in a day’s work…

    (coughs)

    NICK

    Stay still…

Nick gets out his phone to call 911.

    JEROME

    Hear me first…

    (cough)

I fucked up. Sold out. The hood.

    (cough)

Get my laptop. My place. 409 Edgecombe. Tell Bertie I sent you.

    (cough)

    Password – is – same. 409…

    (cough)

Don’t tell Shania or Scott. Do it.

    Jerome grabs Nick’s hand tightly…

    JEROME

For Grandma Alice. For all of us.

…as Nick watches him die… and realizes the baton has been passed and, er, he, Nick, is fucked! And… so be it!

Act 1 turning point. Will need to increase writing productivity in order to complete a draft in 30 days.

    INT. SUPERINTENDENT’S OFFICE – DAY

Frank (25) enters and stands broadly in front of the Superintendent of Schools (50’s). There are several boxes piled up in the corner.

    SUPER

    Sit down Frank.

Frank resists initially, then finds his seat. He sits up proud and firm; stares briefly at the boxes.

    SUPER

Frank, I’ve got to admit – you’ve done an amazing job with the wrestling team this year. You’ve brought leadership and discipline to a team, that honestly had no direction. Having said that (pointing) what’s in these boxes?

Frank flips the box top open revealing brand new wrestling gear including uniforms, ear guards, and shoes.

    FRANK

New equipment for the team. The basketball team gets new gear every year, why would the wresting team be any different?

    SUPER

We’ve already had this conversation. The basketball team sells tickets. The wrestling team is a school expense. We just don’t have the budget this year.

    FRANK

And the year before and the year before that.

    SUPER

Look. Let’s set up a return order on this and I’ll make sure it’s in the budget for next year. Maybe your team can set up some fund raisers to help the cause?

    FRANK

We drill, we practice, and we drill some more. That’s what makes state champions. Not fund raising.

DELIVERY GUY KNOCKS on the Super’s door and is waived in.

    DELIVERY GUY

Hey ya…got this new wrestling mat delivered. Where’d ja want it delivered? Into the gym?

The Super shakes his head as Frank storms out.

    Marilynne’s Turning Point 1 Scenes

What I learned doing this assignment is to keep inserting placeholders so you continue to move forward.

    TURNING POINT 1

    BEATS:

An androgenous figure dressed in black randomly robs a local convenience store.

Isy’s 10 year-old daughter MIRANDA (nickname RANA), is shot and sustains a life threatening spinal injury.

Isy suspects a Saboteur is behind the attack.

    OUTLINE:

INT. LOCAL (?REAL/VIRTUAL) CONVENIENCE STORE – EVENING

BEGINNING: They have a custom – Dr. Isy and her mother, her mother and her grandmother, and now her and her daughter. To get ready for watching their favorite movie they buy junk food from the local convenience store for their special treat night.

MIDDLE: Dr. Isy is at the back of the store getting beverages, Rana can’t decide in the snack aisle. An androgenous figure dressed in black enters the convenience store. He pauses, then starts shouting “get down” and shooting randomly around the store. Dr. Isy briefly looks up at the figure and Rana is shot.

END: Dr. Isy is grazed by a shot and crawls over to Rana who’s covered in blood and moaning. Like a bolt of lightning Dr. Isy realizes immediate funding is now critical to continue her research and save her daughter.

    The Sacred Kingdom

This assignment prompted me to fill out my scene with an outline and proceed to writing the TP having thought the scene through.

    ACT 1 – DETAILED OUTLINE.

    EXT. FOREST – DAY

Crown Prince AKAASH(20) takes aim at a magnificent stag. As his arrow strikes, the animal leaps in the air and falls. A GROUP OF HUNTER FRIENDS cheer loudly. Akaash accepts their praise as his due. He rides on, followed by the others.

On the way, he spots an OLD MAN weighed under a heavy bundle of logs and a YOUNG GIRL carrying a water pot. He motions to one of his GUARDS to help him. The Old Man praises Akaash extravagantly, falls to the ground, prostrates himself before Akaash who accepts it, again, as his due, and rides on. The girl helps the Old Man up, and says loudly, that it’s the soldier who’s carrying the log who should be praised and not the an who gives the order. One of his party tells the girl off. Akaash is stung but rides on. One member of the group, disguised as a man, slips away.

    EXT. PALACE ENTRANCE – LATER

The WAR MINISTER greets Akaash as he enters. Avanti’s arch-enemy King Shalivahan of the South is preparing his army to attack. According to cosmic law the Sacred Kingdom can only be attacked if there is no monarch on the throne. Akaash must be crowned king urgently.

The COURT GURU is doubtful, Akaash is not ready for kingship.

    INT. QUEEN’S APARTMENT – CONTINUOUS

Akaash goes to visit his mother and get her blessing.

INT. A SMALL SPACE IN THE APARTMENT – SIMULTANEOUS

The disguised figure strips of her hunting garb and picks up a voile garment.

    QUEEN’S APARTMENT

The figure is MOHINI (19) daughter of the QUEEN’s late companion she joings them. The QUEEN tells AKAASH he is not ready to be king. He will dishonor his father and the throne if he is crowned. It’s like a slap in the face.

    EXT. GARDEN – LATER

Akaash confesses secret doubts about his own worthiness to Mohini. Mohini tries to convince Akaash that there’s still time and if he works hard on the principles and values set out from ancient times, he will be an excellent ruler. But Akaash chooses to avoid that option. He decides to go in search of his father who may still be alive and ask about his doubts.

    …………..

    Lesson 11

    EXT. BATTLE-PRACTICE ARENA – NIGHT

Akaash swings a massive axe with the full power of his body, repeatedly attacking a tree-like block of wood. Mohini comes in dressed in armour watches for a moment and calls out. He swings around with his axe seeing her in full armour and she stops his axe with hers. She challenges him about his fury saying everyone knows his skill and might with an axe. If he spent the same energy on the rules of kingship, he would very quickly make a worthy king. Akaash says that it was his father’s duty to develop the qualities he needed but he preferred to go off on adventurous missions with his kid brother.

He confesses he has always had secret doubts about his own worthiness because his father focused on what should try to achieve without ever validating is actual achievements.

Mohini tries to convince Akaash there’s still time. He has all the qualities of a warrior and an athlete. He just needs is to work on the time-honoured values and principles of rulership. She points out that a worthy king would get off his horse immediately and helping the Old Man rather than wait to summon a soldier to do it. Akaash rejects her advice option. He decides to go in search of his father who may still be alive. Mohini gives him a ‘memory-gem’- a gift from her by her mother before she died.

    ……

    ACT 1 Turning Point

    EXT. BATTLE-PRACTICE ARENA – NIGHT

Akaash swings a massive axe with the full power of his body, repeatedly attacking a tree-like block of wood. Mohini comes in dressed in full armor watches for a moment and calls out.

    MOHINI

    (in a deep voice)

Prince Akaash! Use that axe on someone who can fight back!

Akaash hears the challenge and seeing her in full armor he swings his axe. She stops his axe with hers. He is about to swing again. Mohini has taken off her helmet.

    AKAASH

    Mohini!

    MOHINI

Everyone knows your might with an axe. Use the energy to learn the ancient rules of king-ship? They say wisdom is mightier than the axe.

    AKAASH

My father should have been here to teach me. But he left me behind and went adventuring with my little brother.

    Mohini snorts.

    MOHINI

Vital rule of kingship. The eldest son remains to protect the kingdom and take over if, heaven forbid, he’s killed on a mission.

    AKAASH

He never took the time to guide me. Or validated my achievements.

    MOHINI

The gurus wait for you every day. Put your mind to it and you’ll soon become worthy of the throne.

    AKAASH

    Where do I begin?

    MOHINI

With compassion. The next time you see someone who needs help, get off your horse and help instead of waiting for your guard?

    Akaash is taken aback.

    MOHINI

Just the little things. A true king is a servant to his people.

Akaash has a light bulb moment.

    AKAASH

I’m going to find my father.

It’s Mohini’s turn to be taken aback.

    MOHINI

You’d abandon Avanti to that demon Shalivahana?

    AKAASH

I have a question for him.

Akaash feels a movement and looks behind him.

    THE QUEEN MOTHER

    Go with my blessing.

    AKAASH

    What of you and Mohini?

    THE QUEEN MOTHER

We hav the entire Avant army to protect us.

    MOHINI

We women know how to protect ourselves.

She feels around inside her armour and hands Akaash a small box.

    MOHINI

The Memory Gem. Made from my mother’s tears. Her last gift.

Akaash bows deeply to his mother. She raises her hand in blessing and leaves.

Akaash comes close to Mohini. She leans her cheek against his. He strokes her hair, then turns and walks into the night.

Assignment 11 Pam Ewing’s Turning Point 1 Scenes

Learned – just charge forward. Be stupid and untalented and uncertain and BE OKAY WITH THAT. Wasn’t okay – fretted over better storyline for days! Might have found it through writing rather than fretting.

    ACT 1 Turning Point Outline

Revised Inciting Incident – Natalie agreed to go claim her birthright after her mother’s death – and filed the paperwork – no plans to travel.

Turning Pt1 – Natalie has been living off of her inheritance which has turned her marriage sour. She has filed for divorce but in working out the prenup the attorney found out that she must claim here birthright in person within 2 years of her mother’s death or forfeit her inheritance. That deadline is in 2 weeks! Crazy foreign royalty and money. Natalie packs to go.

Scene after TP1 – Natalie’s husband shows up in the country.

    INT. ATTORNEY’S OFFICE – DAY

Natalie fidgits. Her husband and his attorney sit across the table. Husband glares at her. Natalie’s attorney arrives in a huff.

    NATALIE’S ATTORNEY

    There has been a problem.

    HUSBAND

Of course. There always is, isn’t there,

    Natalie.

    HUSBAND’S ATTORNEY

    Shhh. No talking.

    NATALIE

    What is it now?

    NATALIE’S ATTORNEY

Although Natalie filed for her birthright, it seems

that per the laws of royal inheritance from XXX,

as you know Natalie’s mother was a princess,

Natalie must claim the birthright in person

within two years of the royal passing or forfeit

    her estate.

    NATALIE

    No money.

    HUSBAND

    (grim chuckle)

NO Money. Can’t make the prenup. No divorce.

    HUSBAND’S ATTORNEY

My client may be out of line but he is nonetheless

correct. Please advise when this matter is resolved.

Husband and his attorney shove away from the table and depart.

    NATALIE

That was just for negotiation purposes, right?

    NATALIE’S ATTORNEY

No. I’ve asked my assistant to contact a travel agent

    for you.

    NATALIE

I’ve never been out of the country since my honeymoon.

    NATALIE’S ATTORNEY

As you know I represented your mother and her estate.

If you fail to retain the estate I will represented the estate’s

    interests.

    NATALIE

There must be another way to resolve this.

    NATALIE’S ATTORNEY

If I may be direct. I am quite certain that if you do not satisfy

this birthright stipulation I will be obligated to seize all your

    funds and evict you.

    TURNING POINT 1 SCENES

    DAVID BRUNO

“What I learned doing this assignment is…?” I learned the significance of the first turning point versus the inciting incident and how it locks them into the journey of the story arc.

    ASSIGNMENT

    1. Outline your Act 1 Turning Point.

    ASSIGNMENT:

    1. Outline your Act 1 Turning Point.

Beginning: The field trip returns to campus, emotions run high and all are still visibly shaken.

Middle: Alistar goes to the faculty meeting and explains the experience the field trip had. Other professors react with strong skepticism and turn against Alistar.

End: Alistar returns home and falls asleep. He has a waking dream of his memories as a child when he first encountered a visitation of aliens. Is totally dismayed and decides to take a sabbatical to discover the truth about this experience and where did modern man come from.

    2. Write your Act 1 Turning Point.

    EXT. CAMPUS – EVENING

The field trip comes to an end. The students hurry to their cars to leave the campus, heads down and struggling to cope.

Alistar: “Ok everyone, I expect all to be here in the morning to review our field…” Students barely acknowledge his words and can’t get out of there soon enough.

INT. FACULTY MEETING ROOM – DAY

Rumors of the events in the Mojave Desert murmured through out the Faculty. Alistar clears his throat and begins to speak explaining that they actually had a close encounter of the 3rd kind. The other professors retract and express disbelief and disappointment in his handling of the event. Uniformly, the faculty voice disapproval and declare he must go through a competence review of his teaching credentials. Alistar is shocked at their reaction and stands up and says, “I’ll prove what we saw was as we described”, and marches out of the room.

    INT. LECTURE HALL – DAY

Meeting with half of the field trip students Alistar tells them what happened in the faculty meeting. The students are further discouraged, break up and leave the meeting.

    INT. OFFICE – DAY

Alistar posts a notice of an immediate sabbatical and packs a box of his personal belongings.

    INT. ALISTAR’S HOME – DAY
