    RESOLUTION
    REVEAL 30
    • Mystery/Suspense: The end.
    • Reveal: To be concluded…

    6. What I learned is…
There is no other genre in which dramatic reveals are more valuable or entertaining. With the mysteries I have created and the clandestine plan of the Villain, my script is going to be filled with reveals.
If well written, the audience gets a surprising experience of Character and/or Plot. But how do I do this in a way that adds to the emotional roller coaster the audience ha already been on? To understand that, we must be able to distinguish the difference between Exposition and a Reveal.

    EXPOSITION:
Information about Character, Story Logic, or Backstory given without dramatic impact.
There are important pieces of information that an audience needs in order to understand a story, but if it is presented as pure exposition, those scenes (and maybe the entire script) will feel boring.
There are few problems with information delivered as Exposition:
    • It stops the Action so Exposition can be explained to the audience.
    • It is usually backstory details; some useful; most not.
    • And it does not engage the audience emotionally.

    REVEAL:
Something under the surface is discovered or brought to our attention in a dramatic way.
When a deep part of Character is revealed dramatically, it creates an emotional experience for the audience. It is interesting and entertaining. It is not just information; it is a bonding moment between Audience and Character.
    • Something covered up.
    • Demand is created for us to discover it (shown through Mystery, Intrigue, or Suspense).
    • Revealed in a dramatic way.
Two BIG Keys to the Reveal that do not show up within Exposition…
    1. I create demand for the Reveal beforehand by building in M.I.S.
    2. The Reveal must be done with dramatic impact.

The beautiful thing about dramatic reveals is, they deliver key pieces of character backstory without it feeling like exposition. These reveals may be some of the best moments of my story for the audience.

    How is the Reveal created?
Work backwards. Start with the reveal, then the cover up, and finally how I will create demand.
    A. What is the reveal?
The thing that I reveal is either a secret or some key piece of information or truth that changes the audience’s perspective of the story in some way. This needs to be something that is important to the story, thus worth doing this kind of work on and worth the audience wondering about.

    REVEAL #
    o Something is covered up.
o Demand is created for audience to discover it through (M.I.S.) Mystery. Intrigue. Suspense.
    Revealed in a dramatic way.

    7. Post to Forums.
