LESSON 12 PT 1 – ANDREA’S SEABISCUIT ANALYSIS:
1. What I learned doing this assignment:
I can’t even talk about this movie without crying.
The profound moments reveal the new way embraced by the characters in the story. Much care and precision were taken to set up and to challenge these old ways until they ran out of gas and exhausted their purpose. Then when the new ways were presented, they made an emotional landing in the hearts and minds of the audience. (sigh)
2. List of Profound Moments in Movie Seabiscuit and What Made Them Profound:
· This scene with the father/family supporting Red getting his first horse
We never know how high we are
Till we are called to rise;
And then, if we are true to plan,
Our statures touch the skies—The Heroism we recite
Would be a daily thing,
Did not ourselves the Cubits warp
For fear to be a King— Dickinson…was profound and underscored the loving foundation from which Red was raised before tragedy struck his family. The quote seemed to be a thumbnail of the theme for the movie – the heroism of the “little guy”.
· Red losing his family due to the depression.
MAJOR REVERSAL.
The BAG OF BOOKS being a living metaphor – used to represent Red’s devotion to his family and value of knowledge being sacrificed or displaced temporarily ->
· to be regained later symbolically as RED MAKES HIS FINAL DECISION (on the bridge) to let go the pain of abandonment & subsequent misfortune (the weight of the bag of books) and to turn his attention and trust toward his new family -> his love for literature restored.
· Charles Howard – when he discovered his son was dead.
MAJOR REVERSAL
The moment was depicted with stark images – 1. the birds flying off the branches, startled, 2. showing how the boy was impressed by the father’s values when he was “absent” (old way), and how this led to tragedy – 3. losing the son and wife and how this tragedy impacted Charles’ world -> closing up of his industry – again shown with stark images: The dark barn doors closing, the padlock.
Good example of “Should work but doesn’t”.
This scene colors how Charles embraces his second chance at love and family, and how he chooses differently in his next venture capital in Tijuana. (new way)
· Tom Smith, the trainer, saves the white horse (New Way).
This is profound to me because this demonstration of character signals the powerful influence one life can have on another. Tom is the change agent in my opinion. His ability to “see” and understand humans (especially underdogs) and horse’s value and potential is strong and potent.
Old Way: Horses get shot when they’ve stop earning money through racing.
· Charles “sees” potential in Tom (New Way):
This marks the beginning of Charles’ new venture capital journey putting humans in the center role of importance – including his new wife and now Tom, the new trainer. Tom wins him over by his authenticity: Clearly, Tom values life, sees its potential, and always tells the truth.
Old Way: Tom being misunderstood and exiled by the horse training community.
· Tom chooses Seabiscuit for the spirit in his eyes (New Way) and Red.
This always makes me choked up when I think of how some of us can see beyond a being’s brokenness to see its spirit within. It’s a special intuitive gift. I know I have it in spades – but it doesn’t always pay off. It’s a risk you take, like when Tom decided to risk giving Seabiscuit a chance, then Red.
The Old Way: the horse and Red being repeatedly misunderstood and abused.
· Tom brings the White Horse in to soothe Seabiscuit (New Way).
Nice payoff for saving the horse’s life. The white horse serves a very important role in Seabiscuit’s story.
Old Way: Horses that misbehave get whipped or sold off.
· Red makes friends with Seabiscuit.
They seem to recognize each other or understand each other in a way no one else can. It’s more than just the offering of an apple. The apple symbolizes “I understand your pain”.
New Way: Trust, understanding, compassion
Old Way: fighting with everyone.
· Seabiscuit is allowed to run free (New Way).
To allow Seabiscuit to rediscover himself as an authentic horse he is given the freedom to run free without the restrictions of the racetrack and its old trappings. He is restored. This is so exhilarating – I felt renewed vicariously through this scene.
Old Way – as introduced and challenged in a “Should work but doesn’t” is the racetrack, the whip, the manipulations etc.
· Red asks for a loan from Charles (New Way)
This is significant in that Red usually doesn’t accept handouts (Old Way). It’s a sign of weakness accepting support he knows won’t pan out. Here he is ready to ask, and risks being refused support. But Charles doesn’t hesitate. He passes the test with flying colors and wins Red’s undying trust and devotion. Red earned the strength for this by letting his old resentments go earlier at the bridge.
· Red accepts help from George to ride Seabiscuit in the big race against War Admiral (New Way):
Red never allowed George to help him. They’re competitors, not friends. Red was able to rise above his ego (Old Way) so that Seabiscuit could find glory. Sacrifice of self for another. Learns about the true nature of collaboration.
· Charles lets Red ride in the last race -> becomes the good responsible father (New Way)
Charles has redirected the love of his dead son onto Red and now is afraid of losing him too.
Old Way – clinging to the memory of his son and the regret that he should have been there or been able to do something. Worry.
· Red rides and wins.
This ending is a culmination of wins made by Red’s transformation: 1. He advocates for himself, because he believes in himself, and he trusts Charles’ devotion for him enough to test it now – as opposed to before when he had the rug pulled out from him rendering him powerless. 2. Red allows George the jockey to help him and Seabiscuit win by slowing down and letting the horses look at each other, which they both know is the key for Seabiscuit winning – strength in collaboration. 3. Charles’ full support – based on the aforementioned decision he makes – allows Red to reclaim his true independence and power as a man. 4. Red’s devotion to another’s transformation: Seabiscuit – as well as himself – a selfless and egoless hallmark in his lifetime.

Bob Rowen’s Turns Insights into Action
What I learned doing this assignment is the important role action can play in delivering profound moments.
Create a list
of the New Ways and Insights you’d like audiences to experience
when they watch your movie.Truth ultimately prevails.
Teacher tenure is a good thing.
Students need to study history as it actually happened.
The true business of schools is education.
The greatest satisfaction in teaching is making a meaningful difference in the lives of students.
Successful teaching is exposing the fallacious claims of indoctrination for what they truly are.
Courage is the backbone of doing the right thing.
With that list,
brainstorm ways to turn the New Ways / Insights into Action. Come up with
at least five (5) New Ways and the Action that will express them.Once Wade Meadows gains tenure, he no longer serves at the pleasure of the school board thereby allowing him to pursue truthful history in his classroom instruction.
Wade Meadows declares education to be the fundamental purpose of schools, not Friday night football.
Wade Meadows introduces Kurt Reimann to his education community. Kurt shares his life experiences in Germany during Hitler-times and draws parallels to then and now in America.
Wade Meadows demands his disciplinary hearing be held in public for all to see.
In a surprise announcement by the superintendent of the County Office of Education, Wade Meadows is named the Teacher of the Year.

Susan A. Willard’s Seabiscuit Analysis
What I learned doing this assignment is my understanding of action was shallow and often wrong.
What I also learned doing this assignment is my control of the use and impact of action can be improved to bring about conscious and subconscious ideas to people who are casually reading or watching my screenplay.
Seabiscuit Profound Moments (with analyzed meaning):
Watching for profound moments in the movie Seabiscuit quickly overwhelmed my experience of the movie. Having watched it for the first time, with this analysis in mind, was amazing.
The insight that the underdog will overcome, stated by the repeated vision of, “You don’t throw away a whole life away just because it’s banged up a little.” The actions below demonstrate this insight that the characters had, learned, and witnessed through the movie.
1) The actions taken by Marcela (eventually Mrs. Howard) to understand why Charles Howard held many profound moments in action, which worked through the reoperation of Mr. Howard from the overwhelming sadness of losing his son and wife. Actions Marcela too were:
· Showing Mr. Howard, he is not alone as they watched the Mexican families and close culture from a balcony.
· Giving him time to get used to being with company again.
· Listening and doing activities he enjoyed, including riding horses, leading to their marriage, demonstrating that Mr. Howard was not a throw away life, leading to their adventure with Seabiscuit.
2) The actions taken by Tom Smith when working or being around horses. A beautiful white horse hurt his ankle:
· The owner and horse hands immediately prepared to shoot the horse, because it’s use to them ran out. Tom offered to buy the horse, and even insisted to buy the horse. Even though the horse’s owner didn’t understand, he allowed Tom to buy the horse.
· Tom’s actions toward the horse, buying the horse, healing the horse, and discussing the horse the potential future of such a great horse, all accumulated in the beautiful white horse having a productive life after his broken ankle. (Foreshadowing the future of broken ankles/legs in the movie).
3) The actions taken by Charles Howard when looking for staff for owning racing horses:
· He noticed an old outcast horse trainer, (Tom Smith), lying in the grass caring for a beautiful white horse lying in a field and investigated the trainer.
· Mr. Howard acted by looking in the woods to find Mr. Smith, talk with him, understand his actions with the white horse.
· Mr. Howard hired Tom for his horse trainer, and jockey trainer, leading to his adventure with Seabiscuit.
·
4) The action of the first time Tom Howard meets the horse Seabiscuit while looking for suitable racing horses, at 5 AM in the dark, wet, fog:
· Seabiscuit is being calmly led down the track toward Tom.
· Tom’s eyes meet Seabiscuit’s eyes.
· The short scene visually explains all you need to know about the horses’ nature and demeaner, and Tom’s insight into the horse’s heart and past. (Learning later that the horse had been whipped in the hind quarter’s – abused.)
· The calm, but unusual scene focuses quickly on the determination in the eyes of the horse, as it reaches out to Tom in the fog of its life, and Tom’s immediate understanding and quick decision that leads to their life together, and Seabiscuit’s rewarding life with people who cared for him dearly.
5) The dramatic actions of Red (Johnny) Pollard’s and Seabiscuit’s loss at the Big Race with War Admiral and opposing reactions and combined, opposing reactions of Trainer Tom and Owner Charles:
· The riveting action of Seabiscuit’s dramatic loss is totally shocking and unexpected.
· The explosively loud, blame-throwing rant by trainer Tom to owner Mr. Howard is shocking and unexpected also, especially when he demands that the jockey, Red should be fired for lying – not telling them he was blind in one eye.
· The slow deliberate action of Mr. Howard, when listening to Tom, taking a moment to think about the entire situation, then lovingly moving close to Tom only to requote Tom’s words about saving the white horse, stating “its ok.”, patting Tom for reassurance and leaving Tom to deeply realize what just happened.
· Without these combinations of actions, the insight into the value of Red, and of saving a life, would not have been fully developed.
6) The actions of Tom Howard promoting Seabiscuit by honestly telling the story of his whole organization to the world:
· The actions Mr. Howard Opted to share the racing group’s belief’s – being a bit different (banged up in or by life) doesn’t prevent success:
· He brought Seabiscuit to see the public and press directly, giving Seabiscuit signatures and horseshoes as mementos, relating directly to people.
· He gave speeches on Seabiscuit being too small, trainer to old, jockey too big, he was too ignorant to know any better, while in person, everywhere they went, people could see, hear, relate, and understand all the working components of the organization, and related to their struggle to win.

LESSON 12 PT 2 – ANDREA TURNS INSIGHTS INTO ACTION
1. What I learned doing this assignment:
I did have a breakthrough watching Seabiscuit: I found the new ways in the profound moments that resonate with me in my movie. This exercise helped me home in on what it is the change is really about in this movie.
Like The Matrix, Jill enters a special world – a state of consciousness that exists outside of the 3D construct that is the Matrix – but this is an inner world. The world of the subconscious mind as it intersects with the quantum realm to the degree that is useful for Jill’s awakening process. So, while there is a psychological benefit from doing “shadow work” – there is an expansion of consciousness that is also shown.
2. New Ways and Insights my audience will experience watching my movie:
· Takes control of destiny
· Begins to self-examine
· Develops trust in self and in others
· Allows herself to feel free – to be present, to exhale, to feel joy
· Asks for help
· Accepts help
· Advocates for herself
· Believes in herself
· Releases buried anger, shame, guilt, and grief
· It’s never too late to bloom
· Facing the shadow side of self is empowering
· Expanded perspective of being eternal and limitless.
· Emotional Healing Increases mental and emotional bandwidth
· You can recover from a terrible childhood
· There is a higher self/ power -> and it is for you all the time.
3. New Ways and the Action that will express them:
· NEW WAY: Takes control of her destiny.
ACTION: Jill stops the man who tries to shave her head later decides to shave half her head of hair in solidarity for the kids who she was abducted with who could not get away as she did, the other half in defiance for her freedom. HAIR IS A LIVING METAPHOR.
· NEW WAY: Begins to self-examine.
ACTION: Skyler (aka Jill) attempts to fly a conscious-assisted spacecraft that requires her mental connectedness. She did it before, sort of, but because she feels unworthy now, she is unable to make it happen – she’s blocked. As a result, she gets triggered by shame then anger and spirals into a meltdown in front of her ward, Ami. There’s no escaping the meltdown and so is forced to look at this painful emotion as the reason she has been held back in life. THE SPACECRAFT IS A LIVING METAPHOR.
· NEW WAY: Trust in self and others.
ACTION: As if it were a test, Skyler (aka Jill) gets lost in a crowd on the streets of this city where she and Ami are trying to escape. Skyler can’t find Ami. She’s so focused on locating Ami she doesn’t even realize there are others around. This also conveys the fact that Skyler/Jill is becoming more selfless, meaning she is becoming more secure within herself.
· NEW WAY: Expanded Awareness.
ACTION: Jill enters a deep theta state of consciousness where she becomes aware of new way of perceiving – she sees energy…and soon discovers she can communicate with and manage herself through this new perspective.

Susan A. Willard’s Turn’s Insights into Actions
What I learned doing this assignment is when insights of new ways of behavior are turned into actions then the insights are a powerful tool in impacting the movie audience.
What I learned doing this assignment is I am going to practice this skill to develop insights of new ways turning into actions, so that I can use this tool to give a movie script its greatest impact.
My Movie Profound Moments (New Ways / Insights into Action):
1) New Way: Rules may be made to be broken. Family and Friends first.
· Action: Break into an off-limits area of a facility to find a missing person.
2) New Way: Family first.
· Action: Protect grandson from being kidnapped.
3) New Way: Family first.
· Action: Care for a family member who’s in need of medical help in secluded dangerous situation.
4) New Way: Drastic situations need drastic actions.
· Action: Explore dangerous places, without being caught, while securing evidence of activities found.
5) New Way: Drastic situations need drastic actions.
· Action: Plan and implement a series of resistance, deviation, and switch actions to escape the antagonist(s).

Bill Southwell’s Seabiscuit Analysis
What I learned doing this assignment is how profound moments are results of setups.
1. After buying the big ranch, the horses are removed from the barn and cars are brought in. This is a set up for later payoff in the movie when the same barn was seen with the cars coming out and horses brought in.
2. Red’s mom and dad sent him to live with others during the depression. Big sacrifice for mom and dad. He was only given a bag of uplifting books and the admonition that he has a gift. The oppression was the depression.
3. Tom Smith a man down on his luck, but with a gift of healing horses, said, “you don’t throw a whole horse away just because he is banged up a little.” This was a set up for a later payoff when Red was injured.
4. Tom sees Seabiscuit fighting not to be roped and Sees Red fighting. He identifies fight in both of them, essential for winning. This scene has no dialogue. It is shown as action only.
5. The training trick was to start fast, then slow down in the final stretch to let Seabiscuit see the horse coming up. This inspires Seabiscuit to beat that horse. This setup was used later in the movie as a payoff when George, the other jockey, slowed down his mount in the final race so that Seabiscuit could see him as be inspired to run fast and win. This was at a point when Red was riding with a injured leg was last place in the race. This was the most profound moment in the movie. All characters were coming back, Red, Seabiscuit, Tom Smith, Charles Howard from injury or despair.
6. Most profound dialogue: “So long Charlie,” (I think it should have been George) and they went on to win the final race. It sent chills down my neck.
-
Bill Southwell’s Turns Insight Into Action.
What I learned doing this assignment is that there are many New Ways conveyed with Actions are more effective than with dialogue or description.
a. When Charis is brought home after a date who appears to be dumping her, again because of her health prospects, she goes to her room and writes in her Journal. We see what she writes (or hears her V.O). “How long must I be alone? When will I meet the one who is to be sent to me? That we may pursue our destinies together?” This is instead of crying and unloading to her sister or mother her disappointments. It is seen in Action rather than dialogue.
b. When Charis (and Bill) is presented the rejection of their adoption application, instead of the dialogue between them as to the why, just show Charis’s face as it expresses her sadness and disappointment. Then, somehow, also with Action, not dialogue, show her determination to fight back, to overcome, to have faith that other paths will open up.
c. The shear happiness when Charis’s blood work (platelet count) comes back favorable, instead of dialog, the scene has uplifting music, showing them on the road to visit Bill’s parents on the farm—a place of peace and happiness.
d. The scene when the small vein surgeon is trying to locate a vein prior to dialysis is all done in silence—no dialogue, no music. Just the action, showing the frustration of the surgeon. He finally is successful with an arm. The scene ends with Bill back in her room. She has a wire frame holding the blankets off of her chopped up legs.
e. The final scene when Charis is on dialysis, is done without dialogue. Two scenes are alternating: one that Bill sees, the scene of hope, finally getting on dialysis, with classical music which then the scene switches to desperation, with doctors and crash carts. The other alternating scene is with Charis’s spirit rising from her body and seeing the form who comes to greet her. The only dialogue is her saying, “Ah yes I know you now. How well you look. How good I feel.”
