    Michael Christopher, Marketing Campaign

What I learned doing this assignment is, there are several avenues to take depending on what your situation and goal is.

I’m going to wait till I get at least a consider rating on another script I’m getting close on before I start a marketing campaign. If it was now, I would start with #6 Marketing to Producers, armed with recommendations from where I got the consider ratings.

I’ll post them on INKTIP, send Q-letters via a service and make calls using phone pitch techniques.

Thanks, Cheryl and Hal Croasmun, I learned a lot of extremely helpful information and enjoyed it as well.

    Hello!

Not posting my assignment yet, but just wondered if anyone would recommend somewhere to get script coverage. We Screenplay seems to be the most recommended from Google, so wanted to ask if anyone has used it.

I haven’t submitted to competitions (there are so many!) but again, if anyone can recommend one that gives good feedback, that would be great.

If there’s anything I can do to return the favour, let me know!

    Thanks

    Joy

Hi Joy, in my experience feedback is the way to go, contests can be difficult if you’re outside of the standard format, again in my experience. I’ve been working with The Page Awards for feedback, and staying with the reader I found compatible there, you may need to try a few. Also, the administrator Zoe is a very caring and helpful friend you will find there too.

Joy, I have used We Screenplay as recently as September 2022. From my experience, the feedback has been actionable, meaning it has helped with improving the overall quality of the screenplay. I can share the feedback with you, if you like.

To all my fellow students, your stories all have very deep and unusual concepts, don’t be discouraged by contests, as Hal has hinted at, first rounders seem to be reluctant to score them high. I found feedback from the development side more focused on what I’m doing as apposed to movies that are out.

And thank you all for your kind words and helpful suggestions, I wish you luck.

Why is it I only notice my typos after I click post, it’s supposed to be opposed not apposed.

What I learned from this lesson is: there are many ways to get your projects out there.

Since there is absolutely no one in my area doing any sort of filming, I have had to create some sort of group. Vancouver BC and Calgary Alberta are our closest hubs. I have costuming contacts in the industry so I’m networking all the time.

I guess the answer to the question is a little bit of writing gigs, volunteering, networking and sending queries to producers. The problem is not having enough hours to the day and boy can I procrastinate. So another thing I have learned in taking on line courses is to be stern with myself and stick to my tasks.

I wish everybody the best of luck. I hope to hear one day your projects have been turned into a movie and you are the Next Big Thing!

    Connie’s Assignment #12

What I learned from doing this exercise is realizing how many different approaches there are to connect with people who can make our dreams of having our scripts actually produced come true.

This class ties in beautifully with a New Year’s determination that my Career Launch writers group made for 2023. Several of us are doing a 30-day challenge to send queries every weekday for 30 days in Feb. and into March. I have a list of over 100 potential producers to query. I am using strategy #6 to start utilizing emails, phone calls, and even some old-school letters to reach out. I plan to send 2/day and 1 to potential publishers on my trilogy of mid-grad novels too.

Thanks to everyone who shared feedback and the very best of luck to you all in this journey.

    Cheers,

    Connie

Wow! That’s impressive. I hope everything goes well for you. I considered this option to be the most powerful, but will require a lot of time and effort. I admire that.

That’s an amazing idea! I hope the first query letter goes out today, and it gets easier and easier to send those letters. No doubt one of the producers will fall for Love Dance – I hope to watch it soon!

      All the best!

    Cody Jarrett’s Marketing Campaign

What I learned doing this assignment is: as there is a formula to Hollywood studio scripts, there is a formula to this. No need to reinvent the wheel, just move forward in the accepted fashions with fresh new material. Possibilities will reveal themselves as you go.

The first marketing campaign I’m using will be attaching actors.

    Plan of action:

    1. Make sure the script is truly in top form; get notes from development execs and established writers I know

    2. Write a brief introductory letter to the first actor (Actor A), with whom I share the same attorney and mutual friends

    3. Have my attorney send Actor A the script. As soon as his production company has the script, reach out to other actors on the list, introducing myself appropriately and letting them know that it’s already out to Actor A.

    4. Once Actor B requests the script, snowball that into every other actor the list, indicating Actors A and B are reading it right now

    5. Go back to my attorney, advise him on everyone who has received the script, and see if there’s a pairing or package he thinks would work. Ask him to help me find a rep for the script based on the potential and possibilities.

    6. Keep working it.

    Kathleen O’Neill – Marketing Campaign

“What I learned doing this assignment is…?” Marketing takes place at many levels. I like using the Actors, Expand Network and Producers. The strategies are good and hopefully effective.

    Marketing Campaign #10: Attaching Actors

    Strategy

    1. Great Writing – Have received “Recommend” for my scripts.

    2. Strategy 9 – Six Degrees of Separation – I have done readings of the scripts and actors get excited. Believe that make it easy for them to say yes may be the most valuable lesson so far.

    a. I have the script out to an actor and will wait one more week before contacting again.

    b. I research actors so that I stay current.

    3. Strategy 8 – Meet on Linkedin, FB and Twitter. I find that IMDbPro is also very good and it gives more info that is important to the process. How do I evaluate the “chance that the movie can be made? I believe I have a great script and that doesn’t necessarily mean it will get made.

    a. Again finding actors who work in the films budget range without negating the A list people.

    4. Strategy 26 – Breakfast, Lunch Dinner with Assistants and Producers – I’m doing te research on IMDbPro to find which doors to knock on and so it continues. I believe working with the assistants is a terrific beginning for a cold call.

    Joy Smith’s Marketing Campaign

    1. Read through the 10 Marketing Campaigns and select ONE that you’ll take action on immediately.

I think I need to start by building my network, as I don’t have any online profile at all for my writing. I’m based in the UK, and although I could visit LA, I don’t have any contacts there yet, so there’s probably not much point in doing that yet.

I love the idea of a kickstarter campaign – but I really need a network and fans of my writing to make that work.

I’d also like to do writing assignments, as I had some experience of this about a decade ago.

I think my main issue is credibility, so I need to work on building my profile and credibility before I put any more of these strategies into action. Thanks to everyone who replied about script coverage services.

    2. Taking that campaign, make a plan of action, listing the actions you’ll take.

I’m going to use LinkedIn as my platform initially. This is my profile, if anyone wants to connect:

    https://www.linkedin.com/in/joygeldardsmith/

I’m going to start to plan some posts, and every time I watch a movie, I’m going to write a mini-review and post that, as well as try and make contacts with some of the producers (if I can find them on LinkedIn).

I’m going to research other writer’s websites, and create a website for my writing. This will probably have a blog element to it, so I’ll come up with ideas for that as well. I’ll post a blog at least twice a month.

    3. Tell us the first action you are going to take…and take it.

Connect with people on LinkedIn and update my profile there.

    4. Answer the question “What I learned doing this assignment is…?” and post it at the top of your work.

What I learned is that there are many ways to market myself, and many of them aren’t as scary as I first thought. I’d love to start taking action now, but I don’t think I have the credibility to do that, so that’s where I’m going to start.

I have an idea for a movie that I think I can position myself as an expert in, so I’m going to start by writing that. First, I’m going to create a template that covers all the points from this course that Producers look for (e.g. synopsis hooks, 10 most interesting things) and I’m going to write that. Then start with the script.

While I’m doing that, I’m going to build up my LinkedIn profile, as well as create a website for my writing so that I am more visible as a writer.

I’d love to do the Master Screenwriter course (although I’m not sure if it’s open right now) but I don’t have the investment needed right now. I’m going to concentrate on the free things that I can do myself, and go from there.

    Good luck everyone!
