Lesson 13: Scares, Releases, and Creepy Moments
Subject Line:(Huey J. Williams) Scares, Releases, and Creepy Moments!
What I Learned:
Its fun and not so difficult to create Horror Stories, the step by step
method that ScreenwritingU teaches makes everything understandable,
educational, and straightforward. The one step at a time method.
THE PITCH:
A Group of High School Graduates celebrate, before leaving for college
with a camping trip in the woods, that they will never forget.
TITLE: “THE THINGAMAJIG”
GENRE: HORROR
FADE IN:
EXT. BLACK FOREST – NIGHT
A forest near a lake illuminated by a full moon, the sounds of desperate
HISSING, and INJURED WOLF GROWL, QUICK THUMPING HITTING THE GROUND, slithers
threw the bush in hot pursuit of a EIGHT POINT BUCK.(Suspense/Dread for Deer)
The Buck SHRIEKS in pain when something in the bushes rips off it’s feet and
begins devouring it, bones CRUNCHING SOUNDS.
CLOSE ON – Just the monster’s mouth chewing is seen, as it takes big bites of
dear meat.(Suspense/Intrigue)
The forest goes silent.
CLOSE ON – SCREECH OWL SHRIEKS, as he watches from a tree.
INT. MOTORHOME – NIGHT
ALDEN drives the motorhome, SHAD his dog liying at his side CORY rides shotgun,
GRAM, ASHLEY, CATE, and ZOEY sit together at the table, all close friends
throughout High School.
Alden pulls up and stops at a sign that reads: “Black Forest Keep Out”
ALDEN
Keep out, my Dad and I have spent many hunting
seasons here, we’ve captured some of the bigest
bucks in the region, perfect dear hunting.
ASHLEY
Ok, lets go home, I don’t feel like getting shot
with rock salt. Do you remember what happend when
we raided that cherry orchard last sumer.
CORY
It’s probably a prank, pay it no mind, we’re here
lets go camping.
CATE
Cory, every since we’ve been together you always say
that prank bit, and you’re never right.
GRAM
Lets go for it, what do we have to loose, all they
can do is kick us out, if they find us.
ZOEY
Cate, I agree, I don’t like going to stange places
uninvited, especially in the woods. Its no telling
what we may find, or run into, there could be GHOSTS,
MONSTERS, maybe even a MAD KILLER.(Apprehension/Anxiety/Emotional)
Everyone in the motorhome starts LAUGHING.
ALDEN
Cate you need to chill out, I think you watch to much TV.
Then it’s settled!
They continue to the camp sight by the lake.
EXT. BLACK FOREST CAMPSITE BY THE LAKE – NIGHT
Under a full moon, Ashley, Alden, and Shad pitch their tent and climb in.
Cate and Cory pitch their ten and climb in.
Zoey and Gram pitch their tent and climb in.
In the bushes hiding the monster watches, not making a sound.
Gram decides to go for a jog threw the woods, his nightly routine.
Gram retuns to camp and notices the motorhome is smoking.
GRAM
Hay guys the motorhome is smoking!
The Group jumps into action rushes into the motorhome putting out the
electrical fire.(Startling)
ASHLEY
Now we’re trapped out in the middle of nowhere,
what’s next, someone gets lost, or maybe killed.(Apprehension/Anxiety)
ALDEN
Ashley, don’t be such a baby. Nothing like that
will happen, Shad and I will protect you.
They put the electrical fire out, return to their tents, all is
quiet.
CORY
I’ll fix the electrical problem in the morning.
Suddenly, there is a LOAD HISSIN followed by a SICK WOLF HOWL!(Surprise/Fear/Suspense/Startling)
Everybody jumps out of bed.
EVERYBODY
What was that! What the hell was that!
Shad begins BARKING and GROWELING, then he runs out the tent in hot pursuit
into the woods after the monster.(Creepy moment)
Alden grabs his rifle and follows shad and tries to catch up into the woods.
EXT. BLACK FOREST – NIGHT
Alden enters area of the forest where he finds Shad’s collar and his fur scattered
on the ground, he picks up the collar.
Alden notes something in the bushes watching him, he can’t see what it
is but he knows it’s there, he keeps his gun on the ready as he heads back to
camp.Creepy Moment/Emotional/Unnerving)
EXT. BLACK FOREST CAMPSITE – NIGHT
Everyone in the camp, Ashley, Cory, Cate, Zoey, except for Gram are gathered
together in terror huging each other.(Fear/Suspense/Dread/Startled)
Alden returns with only Shad’s Tags and some of his fur.
Alden hugs Ashley almost in tears.
ALDEN
Shad is gone, he die protecting us, all I found was his
tages, his fur was scattered all over the ground.
GRAM
Shad was an excellent hunter, I bet he went out fighting.
ALDEN
There’s more, while I gathered Shads things, I fealt like
I was being watched by something hiding in the
bushes. I couldn’t see it but it was there
watching me. I kept my rifle ready as I left.(Apprehension/Anxiety/Fear/Dread/Scare)
The Group hugs each other tighter as Alden told the story of what he saw.
GRAM
Alden, how many extra guns did you bring?
ALDEN
The hand gun on me, my rifle, there is a hand
gun and rifle in the motorhome.
GRAM
I think we should leave the tents set up, but
everyone sleep in the motorhome tonight.
ALDEN
I agree.
INT. MOTORHOME BLACK FOREST – NIGHT
The Group make their way into the motorhome and bed down for the night.
Zoey tries to make a call home on her cell phone, no signal.(Surprise)
ZOEY
There’s no signal out here, I can’t make a call,
now we’re really screwed. Gram, if anything happens
to me, I’ll, I’ll, you better protect me.
GRAM
As long as you’re with me love, I’m your
Superman, you know that.
Gram, and Alden armed decides to share watch duty for the night.
The monster is watching the motorhome in the bushes.
The monster enters the camp, ransacking the tents, then goes to
the motorhome and peeps threw the bathroom window.
Zoey is in the bathroom bushing he teeth, when she spot the monster’s
big eyees enlarged face staring at her, she SCREAMS and runs out of
the bathroom.(Shock/Hysteria/Fear/Creepy Moment/Scare)
ZOEY
There’s a monster out there, he’s peeping in
the bathroom window! His face was horrible, big
eyes, ugly face, I don’t think I will sleep tonight!
Zoey, Ashley, Cate begin SCREAMING as LOAD as they can!(Fear/Dread/Hysteria/Shock)
The monster jumps up and downon the motorhome HISSING, HOWLING LIKE AN
INJURED WOLF, shaking things up.
THE MONSTER
FEED ME! FEED ME! over and over.
EXT. OUTSIDE MOTORHOME BLACK FOREST – NIGHT
Alden, Gram, Cory, go into action each armed, they make their way out of the
motorhome they get their first look at the monster, and begin shooting.(Shock/Fear/Dread/Startled/Emotional)
They make multiple hits, but it doesn’t kill the monster, as it runs away into the
darkness.(Surprise)
Alden, Gram, Cory are sweating, knees kocking, wide eyeed and they can’t believe
what they just saw.(Creepy Moment/ Scare)
GRAM
What the hell was that!
ALDEN
The Girls are hysterical, but they must know what we are
dealing with. We have to come up with a way to kill this
THINGAMAJIG, what ever it is.
CORY
It looked hungry, its either us or it, the
Thingamajig, that’s a good name for it.
That’s what it looks like a Thingamajig.
We’ve learned something about it tonight,
bullets won’t kill it, mybe fire will.
Alden, Gram, Cory head back into the motorhome, they have some explaining to do
with the girls.
ALDEN
I wish I had a better way to tell you this,
but we’re being hunted, by something we have
named the Thingamajig. We promise you, we’ill
protect you, we have a plan.
Later that evening the Thingamajig strikes again this time Cate, Zoey, and Ashley all
get a look at it, as it raids the tents looking for food or one of them.(Dread,Hysteria,Fear/Scare)
Ashley, Cate, Zoey become hysterical, crying, sweating, Zoey soil herselves.(Fear/Hysteria/Shock)
EXT. OUTSIDE MOTORHOME BLACK FOREST – NIGHT
Alden, Gram, Cory attack the Thingamajig a battle begins with fire, (molotov cocktails), they miss.
Gram moves in close for a better shot with the molotov cocktail
The Thingamajig charges, grabs Gram, runs into the darkness of the forest.(Dread/Horror/Shock)
Alden and Cory, armed place four molotov cocktails in cooler and head out tracking Gram and
the thingamajig, they follow the Thingamajig’s foot prints to his hideout.
(Anguish/Panic/Creepy Moment)
EXT. BLACK FOREST THINGAMAJIG’S HIDEOUT – NIGHT
The Thingamajig hideout, a near hole in the ground.
Alden and Cory arrive at the Thingamajig’s cave.
(Apprehension/Anxiety/Fear/Creepy Moment/Disturbing Environment)
ALDEN
We found it’s hideout.
CORY
It looks like a spooky place, oneway in,
oneway out.
INT. THINGAMAJIG’S LAIR – NIGHT
Alden and Cory enter the Thingamajig’s lair slowly, molotov cocktails in hand, as they
move deeper into the cave, suddenly a BIG BLACK BAT attacks them on his way out of
the cave.(PANIC/HORROR/Surprise/Startled/Scare/Creepy Moment)
In the distance Alden and Cory, hear sounds of BONES CRUNCHING, CHEWING, and SWALLOWING,
then it stops.(Anguish/Panic/Horror)
Alden and Cory look at each other.(Fear/Anguish)
With blood, gutes, and gleaming sharp teeth, the Thingamajig leaps out, almost grabing Cory,
as he jumps out of the way.
Alden throws a molotov cocktail and misses.(Horror/Panic/Hysteria)
The Thingamajig spits a black paste at Alden, misses, jumps at him, a foot away,
then Cory throws a molotov cocktail, which catches the Thingamajig’s leg on fire.
The Thingamajig WOLF HOWLS in pain.
Alden throws his last molotov cocktail, hitting the Thingamajig’s upper body, he hits
the ground burning, HOWLING.
Alden and Cory fire several shots into the Thingamajig’s body, as it burns, then it morphs
into something even more hideous.(Release)
As it burns the Thingamajig morphs to a BIG MAGGOT, then to ASH.
CORY
It’s changing shape, he looks even worse,
a big maggot, Yuk.
ALDEN
Lets find what’s left of Gram, and get out of
hear.
The go deeper into the cave and they find the half eaten body of Gram, they stair at his body,
both almost in tears.
(Dread/Horror/Anguish/Shock/Creepy Moment/Disturbing Environment/ Grossed Out)
CORY
Poor Gram, there’s not much we can do for him.
ALDEN
Lets bury him and get back to the camp.
EXT. BLACK FOREST – NIGHT
Alden and Cory take Gram’s body out of the cave and bury him in the forest, then make their
way back to the camp.
EXT./INT. MOTORHOME – NIGHT
Ashley, Cate, Zoey stand at the motorhome happy to see Alden, and Cory, but Zoey begins
CRYING.(Fear/Apprehension/Anxiety/Dread/Startled)
ZOEY
Where is Gram! Where is Gram!
CORY
He didn’t make it. The Thingamajig killed him,
he died trying to help kill the monster, we buried
what was left of him in the woods. He was a very brave
young man, and a true friend, the Thingamajig is dead.
Zoey burst into more tears, Ashley and Cate comfort her.(Dread/Fear/Apprehension/Anxiety)
ALDEN
Grab your things, we’re leaving, we’ll hike
to the nearest main road, hitch-hike back to
town for help.
ZOEY
Poor Gram, I miss him already.
ASHLEY
We all miss him, he and Shad gave their lives so
that we could excape being killed by that Thingamajig.
CATE
I hope there are no more of those monsters around.
CORY
You never know the way the world is changing, global
warming could be causing these things.
CATE
Cory, can we talk about something else, or maybe not
talk at all.
Together with Ashley, Cate, Zoey, Alden and Cory hike their way out to the main road,
where they catch a ride back to town for help.(Fear/Apprehension/Anxiety)
As they walk huddled threw the black forest there is movement in the bushes, Ashley,
Cate, and Zoey start SCREAMING, Alden and Cory take aim.
Out walks an EIGHT POINT BUCK, looks at them, then wanders back into the woods.
They all take a deep breath, sigh of relief.(Emotional/Startled/Release)
EXT. BLACK FOREST – NIGHT
What appears as a falling star lights the sky, then lands near the lake.(Surprise)
CLOSE ON – A Thingamajig sureys the forest, grimaceing look on his face, looks at
the moon, HISSES and INJURED WOLF HOWLS into the night…
FADE OUT

What I Learned doing this Assignment is how to build a horror story using different emotions.
Startling – They are sitting at Base camp when they hear fluttering noises surrounding the camp, then suddenly the lights start to flicker and go out
Creating Scares
John is sleeping at the camp, when he awakens to see Blake standing over him holding a knife.
Releases
John sees Blake walking towards the woods, he decides to follow him, he follows the trail of blood that leads to a cave, he enters the cave and encounters Blake,his eyes are glazed over and he looks dazed and confused. He calls out Blake, Blake, he finds him in a pool of blood, he turns him over, he spews green vomit all over John
Ext- Base Camp – Dusk
The group is sitting at the camp site when suddenly they hear fluttering sounds coming from outside the camp. Suddenly the lights start to flicker and go out.
He sees Blake walking towards the woods, he follows him in the dark through the woods until they come to a fork in the road, He yells out to him, ‘Blake, “Blake he finds him covered with blood and vomit, he turns and spews green vomit at him.

Barbara Fix’s Scares. Releases and Creepy Moment
I learned to create a rollercoaster ride.
INT. SEYMOUR SANITARIUM – CORRIDOR – EVENING
Taylor HEARS Charlie’s YELLING and SCREAMING getting louder. He’s startled at first, then:
TAYLOR: Good thing you’re a producer, not an actor. You’re delivery sucks.
Taylor arrives at the stairwell; Charlie is still SCREAMING. Taylor notices BLOOD ON THE FLOOR MAT. He looks up just as Charlie’s body comes crashing down. He jumps out of the way as Charlie’s body slams onto the floor at his feet, THWACK!
A beat.
TEN BLOODY FINGERS shower down on top of Charlie’s limp body.
TAYLOR: Holy shit!!!
Taylor is stunned — he GASPS in surprise — then runs.
INT. SEYMOUR SANITARIUM – LARGE WARD – EVENING
Sam is still loving having an audience for once.
SAM: I mean, its not such a bad thing to eat someone given the right circumstances, especially…
CARSON: (to Sam) You need to get out more, bro. You’re one demented white boy.
Everyone laughs, including Sam. Taylor flies into the room, frantic and out of breath. He can barely get it out.
TAYLOR: Charlie’s…been killed!
TERRY: (still laughing) Was he scared to death?
TAYLOR: I heard screaming so I went to look. I see a pool of blood on the floor, next second Charlie’s body comes crashing down from above! And his fucking fingers were chopped off!
TERRY: So what are you guys pulling now?
TAYLOR: Pulling? Nothing. I’m serious!
SAM: Hey dude, we were discussing some super rad stuff when you interrupted. Cut the “cry wolf” act so we can get back to it.
Taylor can’t understand why no one is reacting. He looks at them like they’re all crazy.
TAYLOR: He’s dead! What’s wrong with you!?
CARSON: You heard the man, drop it. I want to hear what retarded thing he’s going to say next.
TAYLOR: This isn’t a joke like before. This is real.
CARSON Yeah, well, you’re gonna be real dead if you don’t shut the…
TAYLOR: (shouting) FUCK!!!! Listen to me!
He now has everyone’s undivided attention.
BARB: I think he means it.
SANDY:Actually, you do seem genuinely scared and…
TAYLOR: Fucking terrified is more like it.
SANDY
Okay, so since you aren’t in on it, then you should know that Charlie was just pulling something on you.
TAYLOR: Maybe so, but he’s dead now. I’ll show you.
INT. SEYMOUR SANITARIUM – BOTTOM OF STAIRWELL – EVENING
Taylor has lead the group to the exact spot he last saw Charlie. NOTHING is there. No Charlie, no blood, no fingers, no bloody floor mat. Taylor looks around confused.
TAYLOR: I swear. He was right here, blood was everywhere.
LORRAINE:Well this place has a pretty fantastic maid then.

Sunil Pappu’s Scares, Releases, and Creepy Moments!
Mike comes back to pick up the soft eyes on the floor and puts them in an empty plastic bag.“What I learned doing this assignment is…to use scares, releases and creepy moments to heighten the horror in one of my scenes.”
ACT 2 MID-POINT SCENE: PHIL GOES BLIND
SCARES: Mike enters the basement parking and feels the chill. Calls out to his dad but no response… dad with his face against the wall in a corner is talking to himself. He laughs… and turns his face… blood streaming down his eye sockets. The enormous eye of the Detector blinks and mimics Jason’s voice which only Phil can hear and responds to…
RELEASES: Mike points his walker, uses his infrared sensor to aim at the Detector, and breaks the spell… Phil collapses… Mike rushes to him and holds him. Phil calls out for his dead son… Mike tells him it’s him. Phil recognises Mike‘s voice and hugs him.
CREEPY MOMENTS: Mike turns to wipe his dad’s face and steps on something soft… a pulsing slimy eye! He feels Phil’s eyes – shocked to feel them missing! Phil says he’s blind now like him. Mike reassures him. He picks up the soft eyes and pops them into a plastic bag. Wraps a blindfold on Phil’s eyes and helps carry him home.
EXT/INT. WORKSTATION – NIGHT
Mike enters the basement parking and feels the chill. He’s still wearing his blind glasses which allow him to see…
MIKE
Dad! Are you okay?
…no response.
Mike feels his way into the Workstation…
MIKE
(softer)
Dad…
Phil is visible with his face against the wall in a corner…
PHIL
(gibberish)
Yes… okay… that’s my boy…
…talking to himself. He laughs…and slowly turns his face… blood trickles down from where his eyes should be…
The enormous eye of the Detector blinks at Mike… He pulls off his glasses and covers the camera before it can scan it.
DETECTOR
(mimics Jason’s voice)
Dad… come on let’s play catch…
Only Phil can hear it…
PHIL
(to imaginary Jason)
Alright but don’t tell your mom… (laughs)
Mike sees his dad talking to himself.
MIKE
Dad… who are you talking to…
Phil doesn’t hear Mike… continues to mumble…
Mike points his walker, using the infrared sensor he aims it at the detector and breaks the spell… It glides away!
Phil collapses… Mike rushes to hold him… Phil feels his face to recognise him…
PHIL
(looking at Mike)
Jason… my son!
Mike hugs his dad…
MIKE
(crying in anguish)
No dad… It’s me… Mike!
Phil pats him…
PHIL
Oh… I’m sorry I can’t see, something’s in my eyes… take me inside my workstation so I can see you…
MIKE
Here let me get that…
Mike takes a step back to turn and wipe his dad’s face and steps on something mushy… he turns on his camera to see a pulsating slimy eye… shudders… shuts his camera.
He slowly feels Phil’s face… his face freezes in horror… he rushes outside to vomit.
PHIL
Mike… you okay boy…?
MIKE
(crying)
Dad…oh God!
Mike comes back to pick up the soft eyes on the floor and puts them in an empty plastic bag.
PHIL
Mike you know it was not you I was upset about, right?
MIKE
(crying)
Dad…
PHIL
I love you, son…
MIKE
Oh, Dad…
PHIL
You know I thought I heard him before… Jason?
MIKE
There was no one Dad…
Phil is completely blind now. Mike quickly wraps a blindfold on him…
MIKE
Come on let’s get you to mom…
Mike carries Phil and they trace their way back home.

Scares Releases and Creepy moments
I learned how to add highlights to a scene in order to enhance the moment and starting with a outline helps to organize the thoughts.
Horror situation: Det. Riley and Det. Davenport are standing in the front door foyer. They both hear screams for help from the basement.
Reaction: Det. Riley acts like he hears nothing. Det. Davenport realizes he left the basement sound proof door open during his haste.
Denial: Det. Riley ignores what he hears and doesn’t want to believe Det. Davenport heard the screams.
Scary: The front door suddenly fly’s open and not by the wind.
Release: Det. Riley thinks he is going to just walk out the door since it’s open.
Creepy: Det. Davenport/Monster steps closer to Det. Riley and takes one big sniff of him under his neck in an upward motion.
INT. MONSTER HOUSE FRONT DOOR-NIGHT
DET. LEO RILEY introduces himself to DET. REINEER DAVENPORT/MONSTER and mentions that CPT. BINGHAM told him to drop by to inquire why he’s been out almost a week and that he will be his new partner going forward concerning the recent vampire killings and that he’s just relocated from the DEKALB COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT. They are talking through the scree door.
DET. RILEY
I might need some ice for my hand. Just kidding. I’m Det. Leo Riley just transferred in from DCPD. We were supposed to meet and greet a couple hours ago but I hear you’ve been out for a minute on account of your brother’s gone missing.
DET. DAVENPORT
Hmm. Real sorry I missed that meeting… but I see you’re all caught up.
DET. RILEY
You, a, mind if I come in? I promised the CO I’d pop in, you know, introduce myself. The CPT speaks very highly of you and of course I’m a fan of your talk show.
DET. DAVENPORT
Yeah, not really. I’m pretty busy at the moment.
Det. Davenport begins to close the door but Det. Riley has opened the screen door and placed his foot partially inside. They both look down and Det. Riley’s foot.
DET. DAVENPORT
Right…
Det. Riley steps in and closes the large Oak Wood door but leaves it somewhat ajar.
INT. MONSTER HOUSE FRONT DOOR FOYER-NIGHT
DET. RILEY
I mean I did tell him I’d check on you. You look taller on TV. I’m sure you hear that a lot.
DET. DAVENPORT
No. Not really.
DET. RILEY
This is a very nice home. You live hear alone do ya? Hmm… anyway, I guess the CPT has tried calling you and since you didn’t pick up he sent me.
DET. DAVENPORT
How thoughtful of him.
They both hear screams for help coming from the basement. Det. Riley nor Det. Davenport flinch at the screaming. Det. Riley ignores it and never says a word.
DET. RILEY
So… I’ll just tell the CPT you’ll be returning next week then.
The front door fly’s open with a loud slam against the wall but there is no gust of wind. Det. Riley reacts to this. He’s caught off guard. He tries to maintain his fear. That was no wind gust.
DET. RILEY
Woe. Some wind we’re having huh?
Det. Davenport/Monster steps closer to Det. Riley and takes a big loud sniff of him from the base of his neck to the top of his neck in one upward motion.
DET. RILEY
Ah. Some personal space there buddy.
DET. DAVENPORT
Yes, well let me show you the door.
Det. Riley turns toward the screen door to leave. He’s relieved. Det. Davenport places his left hand on the back of Det. Riley’s upper back/lower neck area as if to pat him on the back, like a good by gesture. But with his right hand he grabs the open Oak Wood door.
With his left hand Det. Davenport pins Det. Riley’s head to the door-frame and begins slamming the Oak Wood Door onto Det. Riley’s head over and over again. Skull and brain grey matter splatters everywhere including onto Det. Davenport’s face.
DET. DAVENPORT
You can tell CPT. Bingham I said I need “some personal space there buddy.”
Det. Davenport lifts Det. Riley’s dead body over his shoulder, locks the front door and carries him to the basement. He drops Det. Riley’s dead body onto the empty chair between NIKKI and WANDA.

Joyce’s Scary as Hell Horror scenes
WIL: I will need to work on this. Right now it is mostly action.
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL – NIGHT
The moon goes behind clouds. Rain begins, light rain at first, then it blows . The bulldozer lights up.
Jon runs the dozer, adds to the fill at the excavation.
Kristina stands dumbfounded and defeated.
She holds out empty hands.
Nothing is around her but mud.
She crawls and slides around the excavasion.
The bulldozer backs up for another run.
Kristina makes her way to Scott, reaches down into the excavation.
Scott grabs her hand.
Jon at the dozer makes another pass. Instead of burying Scott, the dirt boosts him.
Kristina heaves him above the pit. She slides him to safety.
She comes around the side of the bulldozer and slings two wads of mud at Jon’s head.
She climbs up and kicks Jon from the seat. they struggle.
He drops into the mud.
Kristina backs up the dozer. The blade gathers mud, buries Jon. He rolls into the pit.
Kristina backs up, changes direction and rams the building.
She comes down, enters the building, and brings Latoya outside.
Scott stands, coughs, and stumbles to her.
KRISTINA
Our chariot.

What I learned doing this assignment is…
o The value of a well placed release drawing the audience in and emphasizing the next horror moment.
o The versatility of any and every scene in a horror movie.
o A great way to interject humor to intensify the next horror.
o Many of these elements are already in the story.
INT – TUNNEL – NIGHT
The uneven floor slows Vicki’s progress in the dark tunnel. She stops when she hears it, the unnatural sound of metal on rock. And its cadence increases. Lights behind her illuminate the path.
She ducks around the corner and freezes. The sound stops. Vicki tries to sneak a quick look when a hand covers her mouth dragging her backwards. It’s Ian.
VICKI: Jesus Ian, you scared the shit out of me.
IAN: I saw it, Vicki, it’s scary as fuck. It’s huge with large claws and big fangs. Big, big, fucking big..
VICKI: Where?
IAN: By the prison. It sliced right through soldiers like a fat kid eating ice cream with steak knives.
VICKI: How’d you get away?
IAN: I felt it inside me, it sensed I wasn’t a threat. It knew I wasn’t here to hurt it. Like when we met at the farm, I could feel your compassion for Curtis and…
VICKI: His cows.
IAN: Any animal, right?
Vicki nods her head.
IAN: I know. Here’s something I also know – the Drone Pilot is the monster.
VICKI: Ssshhhhh. Listen.
A faint whirring sound becomes louder. Lights brighten the tunnel, the metallic sound on rock grows closer.
Vicki and Ian slide deeper in the darkness when a metal head comes in view and turns their way. It approaches.
VICKI: What do we do?
Vicki turns around – Ian’s gone.

What I learned in doing this assignment was- ALWAYS CAREFULLY READ THE ASSIGNMENT! I am getting more and more ideas for the script for when I actually write it.
OUTLINE:
EMOTIONAL-
The original group- Carl, Louis, Evabeth and Amber, decide to explore the grounds of the hotel. They are walking through the woods when they start to small something horrible. They comment that a small like that must come from something big. It smells really bad.
As they continue to walk, Evabeth, who is actually from the area, tells them a local legend about some kids who got lost years ago and where never found. The locals claim the children were kidnapped by a cult and sacrificed. They see something white at the base of a tree and the Boss (Carl) orders the Second-in-Command (Louis) t go see what it is. He leans over to look at it and is startled to see if it s bleached skull. He says it looks like something has been gnawing on it. Evabeth screams that it might be one of the sacrificed kids.
RELEASES-
Suddenly a rat jumps out from under the skull and runs away, scaring them.
CREEPY MOMENTS-
GROSS OUT
Amber says it’s not a human skull, it’s probably a raccoon or a skunk. As they continue walking, the bad small gets even stronger.
They come across animal corpses strung up on a branch. They are disgusting, old and dried out. Not making the smell that seems to be all around them.
UNNERVING CHARACTER-
They walk in another direction and find the woodland camp of a HOMELESS PERSON. He explains that the animals are his. He’s drying out the skins to make a coat for the winter. Carl says if he doesn’t get off his land, the sheriff to throw him in jail.
The Homeless Person claims Los Vigilantes Oscuros will protect him. When they ask him what the hell they are, he says they are the Dark Watchers that live in caves and eat people who get lost in the woods.
EXT. WOODS BEHIND THE RESORT – DAY
Carl strides ahead of the group, whacking at the underbrush with his walking stick.
CARL
Louis: make a note. Before we officially open up for business, I want all these woods cleared, so they don’t look so wild.
AMBER
Don’t you advertise the resort as native and unspoiled?
CARL
I don’t want them to look dirty.
AMBER
(Muttering) What a tool.
As they continue to explore, the wind changes and they notice a smell.
CARL
What the hell is that stink?
LOUIS
Not me, Mr. Adderman.
AMBER
He who smelt it, dealt it.
They continue walking, the smell continues to get stronger.
EVABETH
That smell might be something dead.
CARL
Like what? That’s a pretty big stink for a bird or a rabbit.
LOUIS
Or a cow.
CARL
A cow? What the hell would a cow be doing out in the woods?
EVABETH
Don’t smell like an animal to me. When I was little, there was a legend that some kids got lost years ago and never were found.
AMBER
You’re from here?
EVABETH
Born and bred. I’m the one who told Mr. Adderman that this whole property might be for sale.
CARL
I thought it might be ripe for development.
He says “ripe”and grabs Evabeth’s rear end and squeezes it.
LOUIS
But they never found those kids.
EVABETH
People claimed they were kidnapped by a cult and sacrificed. That happened way back when hippies were roaming around these parts.
AMBER
Yeah, hippies were big on human sacrifice.
Suddenly, she sees something white at the base of a tree.
AMBER
What the hell it that?
CARL
What is what?
AMBER
That white thing. Over at the base of that tree, In the leaves.
They peer at it, no one wanting to go over and investigate.
EVABETH
Careful, might be a skunk.
LOUIS
That could account for the smell.
EVABETH
Only if it was a dead skunk.
Carl poke Louis with his stick.
CARL
Go over and investigate.
LOUIS
Me?
CARL
Yes, It’s your job.
AMBER
Was that in the job description- “must be willing to investigate creepy dead stuff”?
Carl pokes Louis again.
CARL
Hurry up.
Louis reluctantly creep over to see what it is.
LOUIS
Oh my God. It’s a skull. A small bleached skull. Looks like something has been gnawing on it.
Evabeth lets out a shrill scream.
EVABETH
It’s one of them kids! The Hippies killed and ate it.
Suddenly, a large RAT jumps out from under the skull. They all scream and fall over themselves to get out of the way.
After a breath, Amber starts to laugh and points at the skull.
AMBER
That’s ain’t no dead kid. Look at the teeth! If that’s a kid, then they need to get braces.
Carl smashes the skull in a fit of anger with his stick.
CARL
Louis! Make a note! No dead animals allowed on my property!
LOUIS
Yes, Mr. Adderman
They continue walking. As they round a large tree, they see dried dead animal corpses hanging from a branch. Raccoons, rabbits, rats, squirrels, possums, you name it.
CARL
So that’s what’s making that small!
EVABETH
I don’t think so. Look at them. Those are all dried out. Ain’t nothing left to small.
AMBER
Why would someone hang them out like that?
Suddenly, from around the other side of the tree, a weird HOMELESS GUY appears. He is wearing a scruffy coat, obviously made from dead animal skins.
HOMELESS GUY
Keep your hands off them skins!
AMBER
No problem.
CARL
What are you doing on my property?
HOMELESS GUY
Just trying to survive.
CARL
Didn’t you see the fence.
HOMELESS GUY
Sure! But I’m so skinny, I just slipped through like a snake.
CARL
Louis, make a note. Electrify the fence.
LOUIS,
Mr. Adderman, I don’t think that’s legal. We could kill a guest.
CARL
At least get this drifter off the property and see he can’t sneak through the fence again.
LOUIS
Right now, Mr. Adderman?
HOMELESS GUY
You can’t touch me. I’m protected by Los Vigilantes Oscuros.
AMBER
Who are Los Vigilantes Oscuros?
HOMELESS GUY
The Dark Watchers. The people who used to live in these mountains, until they were driven off. But they never really left.
EVABETH
Maybe they took them kids.
HOMELESS GUY
The Dark Watchers live in caves and holes. They eat people who get lost in the woods. But I never get lost.
He laughs.
AMBER
Sweetie, you got lost a long time ago.

What I learned: how to go in more depth into crafting a scene
INT—SCHOOL/HALLWAY—DAY
As SAMI walks through the halls, he hears something fall. He then approaches to investigate.
INT—SCHOOL/CLASSROOOM—DAY
SAMI enters, but finds two DEES. Both figures have their legs tied to a CHAIR, but one has a SILVER DAGGER near them. He asks both one question, and then another each asking a different double first. While the DOPPELGÄNGER, who answered first second, is pondering, DEE grabs the DAGGER frees her legs, and they run off together.
INT—SCHOOL/HALLWAY—DAY
In their hasty escape, they trip over a dead body that appears to have been badly burned. SAMI pulls out a CAMERA or PHONE and takes a picture, saying “this could come in handy.”

What I learned… With prompting from the assignment, I came up with Scares, Releases, and creepy moments that I could add to the entire outline, from the Prologue to Mini Movie 8. I guess you could say (cliché alert) I went outside the box on this assignment
Startling:
Lights go out. MM 3-Lights flicker and go out in Tess’s bedroom (blame the old building)
Something falls. MM 3-Something of Mom’s falls off a shelf (blame the open window)
Window or glass breaks: MM 1-A rock crashes through Tess’s bedroom thrown by a protestor.
A friend jumps out at you: MM 5-Gigi pokes Tess (as a joke) as they walk a dark hall to the embalming room
See the monster w/warning: MM 5-In the lab, Father appears out of nowhere and touches Tess.
A howl or screech: Prologue-A high-pitched screech comes out of the darkness ( zombie warning)

What I learned: With a little time and brainstorming the script can really craft itself now that we are coming to the end of the month. I’m trying to put more focused time in and let some of the spaces fill in organically.

Scares: Adair wakes from vivid nightmares. She reaches for Levi but he is missing. She panics. The house is dark and strange. She searches for her glasses but nothing. She stumbles out of the bed and decides to search. Adair locates a flashlight and walks through the dark house. She hears voices. As she moves into the living room they become more pronounced. She hears her daughter. Her missing daughter’s cries are coming from above. “Jo! Levi?” With blurry vision, Adair stumbles further and finds the attic door. She turns the knob and is ready to ascend when –
“Mommy”. Adair turns. Jo stares warmly back at her.
Release: “Jo? Where have you been? Oh, my god you had us scared.” Adair holds her daughter tight. “You scared us to death. Where’s Daddy?”
Jo – “You need your glasses”
Adair stares frightfully for a moment then shakes it off. She takes the glass.
“Thank you, baby”
Adair puts the glasses on.
She encourages Jo to bed. They amble off together.
Adair turns back, feeling a chill.
Creepy Moments – a little later
Adair rushes to her bedroom to search for Levi. He is still missing. Adair now frightened. She scans the room with her flashlight. Attempts the light switch but the lights flicker and burn out.
Adair “What’s the, what the fucks happening”
Adair wanders down the hallway and looks at the attic door. She decides. She marches to Benjamin’s room. She slowly creeps to his bed and carefully pulls off his covers. Benjamin is there. Sleeping. Peacefully. Adair turns and goes back to the attic door. She stares, pondering. Her hands shake. She decides and reaches for the door.
“Mommy.”
Adair whips around.
Black eyes stare back.

What I learned doing this assignment is that building the kind of horror script that the industry requires and expects is a step-by-step process that can be repeated. It is a process that can be used to improve every draft of the script until it is ready for submission.
OUTLINE:
STRANGE NOISES: Searching for the missing corpse, Raleigh and Christine hear whispering coming from somewhere down the haulage tunnel of the mine.
RELEASE: Coming upon structural damage to a wall in the stope dugout, Christine deduces that the sounds they heard were settling from the earthquake damage.
CREEPY MOMENT: About to leave the stope, Raleigh tosses a rock against the wall in frustration. It causes more rocks to fall, revealing the corpse of the Exorcist-Priest in the far corner, concealed by shadow against the wall.
SCENE
INT. HAULAGE WAY – NIGHT
Each holding a flashlight, Raleigh and Christine make their way slowly down the tracks. The tracks lead off in two directions, into two separate tunnels. Christine keeps a close watch on Raleigh, still wary of him.
CHRISTINE
What are you looking for?
RALEIGH
I’ll know it when I see it.
The very faint sound of WHISPERING VOICES stops them dead in their tracks.
Raleigh waves Christine to crouch down low. They play their flashlight beams down the tunnel, but find nothing.
The whispers stop.
CHRISTINE
Just settling from the earthquake.
Raleigh shakes his head.
CHRISTINE
(sarcastic)
What then? You’re army of demon spirits?
RALEIGH
If they’re whispering collectively, that’s a good
sign.
CHRISTINE
How do you figure?
RALEIGH
It means they’re still trapped inside the priest’s
body. They’re individuals, just like people. They
have been stuck together for over three hundred
years.
The whispering voices return. They rise to their feet.
RALEIGH
(points)
It’s coming from that tunnel.
Christine follows close behind Raleigh. She glances over her shoulder occasionally.
They enter the tunnel the sound came from.
A soft WHISTLING sound emanates from an area of the wall where stones have fallen from. Christine nudges RALEIGH.
Christine sighs. Raleigh slumps, wipes his forehead with his sleeve.
CHRISTINE
So much for your demons. It was the earthquake.
RALEIGH
This leads right to the stope.
CHRISTINE
The what?
RALEIGH
It’s a dugout where the ore’s being mined.
Christine squints towards the stope.
CHRISTINE
I though I saw something move.
RALEIGH
That might be whoever it was that stole
the corpse.
CHRISTINE
And he might have it with him.
RALEIGH
We’ve got to stop him before he releases
all those demons!
Raleigh rushes down the tunnel.
CHRISTINE
STOP!
Christine hurries after him, watching her feet as she goes.
INT. STOPE
The room is shrouded in darkness, especially the corners, which are masked in shadows.
Raleigh shines his light around the room. He picks up a chunk of rock, examines it.
Christine enters, gun drawn.
CHRISTINE
I’ve had enough of this, Raleigh.
(beat)
Put that down.
RALEIGH
You don’t believe me.
CHRISTINE
I never believed you about demons.
Angry, Raleigh fires the rock into the corner of the room.
The whispering returns.
CHRISTINE
Let’s go.
RALEIGH
Shhh!
A chunk of rock falls from the wall in the corner. Raleigh points to it.
CHRISTINE
Quit stalling. It’s just earthquake damage.
One after another, more rocks falls from the wall.
Exorcist-Priest Bartholomew Keene emerges from the shadows in the corner.
Keene looks from Raleigh to Christine, then around the room.
CHRISTINE
What the hell?
Raleigh takes a step back.
RALEIGH
(softly)
Let’s get out of here.
CHRISTINE
Who is he, Raleigh?
Keene turns abruptly. He stares at Raleigh, takes on step towards him.
BARTHOLOMEW KEENE
(soft collection of voices)
Raleigh? Raleigh Douglass!
A light glows from Keene’s eyes, nose and ears. It sizzles with life.
Christine takes a step back. She is clearly unnerved by this display and the collection of voices. She points her weapon at Keene.
CHRISTINE
You! Priest! Identify yourself.
Keene turns to face Christine.
BARTHOLOMEW KEENE
(soft collection of voices)
I am legion. For we are many.
Keene LEAPS at Raleigh. He ducks under the priest. The priest slams into the wall behind Raleigh.
Christine trains her gun on Keene.
RALEIGH
No! That’s what he wants!
Raleigh grabs Christine’s forearm. She shoves him off.
The Priest bounces to his feet. He runs at Christine.
Christine shoots him in the chest.
Keene absorbs the hit and is knocked back a step. The bullet wound glows. He keeps coming.
Christine shoots him in the chest again.
Again, Keene absorbs the hit and is knocked back a step. The second wound also glows.
The energy trapped inside slowly bleeds out of him. Keene LEAPS on her.
Christine steps back, uses Keene’s momentum to propel him into the wall.
The collection of voices SHRIEKS in anger.
Christine shoots Keene once – twice – three times.
Keene is pushed back – back – back –
but he doesn’t fall.
The collection of voices moans softly, oozing satisfaction.
Raleigh grabs Christine, pulls her back.
BARTHOLOMEW KEENE
(soft collection of voices)
Raleigh! Raleigh Douglass!
Keene LAUNCHES himself at them.
Raleigh and Christine hit the ground hard.
Keene SAILS over their heads and CRASHES into the wall.
Raleigh pulls Christine out of the stope and into the tunnel.

I learned that Scares, Releases, and Creepy Moments are more choices on the writer’s palette for developing a scene; these elements can add texture and humor to any horror situation.
Here’s a scene from the Prologue, which takes place on a prairie in 1845:
EXT. PRAIRIE CHURCH/WAGON – DAY
The three girls fall to their knees in the shade of a wagon, causing its horse to NEIGH. GERTRUDE is pale and nervous. ROSA stifles a laugh by holding her nose. The crafty MAGDALENE removes her hat and peers around a wagon wheel.
MAGDALENE’S P.O.V.
The church procession marches toward the wall of prairie grass that marks the edge of the settlement, the incense smoke lingering among them.
BACK TO THE GIRLS
Magdalene tightens her grip on her hat then dashes toward the wall of grass west of the church. Rosa is on her heels. Gertrude hesitates… then runs for it.
EXT. PRAIRIE GRASS – CONTINUOUS
One by one the girls disappear into a gap in the tall grass, Gertrude lagging.
ON GERTRUDE
She finds herself in a pocket amidst the tall switchgrass and bluestem. Several paths have been trampled in front of her.
GERTRUDE: Magdalene? Rosa?
No sound but the SIGHING OF GRASS and the CHIRPING OF GRASSHOPPERS.
Gertrude picks a path and begins searching. The grass caresses her from both sides. Grasshoppers and butterflies scatter in front of her.
GERTRUDE (in German): Where are you two?
She keeps moving, the grass CRUNCHING underfoot. She doesn’t notice a snake crossing her path.
Looking nervous, Gertrude stops and listens. She hears a GUTTURAL SOUND behind her. A voice? Controlling her breathing, she prowls in its direction. Something moves through the grass ahead of her.
GERTRUDE (in German): No tricks… please…
Gertrude cautiously clears away some grass when WHOOSH! a dark form zips skyward. A ruffed grouse.
Gertrude covers her mouth to keep from screaming. She’s had enough — she turns in her tracks — and SHRIEKS as she bumps right into Rosa.
ROSA (in German): Silence, Gertrude! Come with me.
EXT. PRAIRIE/FLATTENED AREA – CONTINUOUS
Rosa leads Gertrude into a flattened area, kind of an open-air room. Magdalene hunches on the ground, back to them, doing something devious.
As Gertrude draws near, Magdalene abruptly turns — there’s a man’s pipe in her mouth.
GERTRUDE (in German): Magdalene, you’ll get sick.
MAGDALENE: It’s not tobacco, it’s sage. The Dakota smoke it ward off evil spirits. Try it?
She extends the pipe to Gertrude, who refuses. Rosa takes it and puffs away.
Suddenly, the grass is whipped by a VIOLENT WIND. The sun is darkened by clouds. The songs of birds and insects are silenced.
After a moment, the WIND DIES to dead silence. Nothing moves. Then CRUNCH… CRUNCH… CRUNCH… footsteps approach.
The girls instinctively converge and wait. The grass parts and a STRANGER steps into the flattened area. He wears the thigh-length coat and knee-high boots of a surveyor. A wide brimmed had shadows his face.

SCARES: Laura is taking careful steps through the woods along the route on her map. Suddenly, her flashlight flickers…and dies. She can’t see the map anymore. Suddenly, she hears a crackle and rustling a few feet away. She tenses. The rustling is closer. A hand falls on her shoulder! Laura sobs with fear.
RELEASES: It’s Emma! Laura is relieved and hugs Emma.
CREEPY MOMENTS: They bicker- Emma blames Laura for her husband’s death and for their predicament. She starts walking away when…a loud, metallic snap sounds. Emma stumbles briefly before appearing to regain her balance. Laura starts to lay a hand on her shoulder, but…Emma suddenly pitches forward and falls on her face. Something wet sprays onto Laura’s legs. It’s blood…Emma’s blood.
Laura shuffles along carefully, trying to keep her flashlight covered and shine light on her map at the same time. Suddenly, the flashlight flickers…then dies.
LAURA
Fuck, fuck, fuck! Not now!
She tries slapping the flashlight back to life, without luck. Suddenly, she hears crackling and rustling. She freezes, holding her breath and jumps when a hand falls on her shoulder.
EMMA
Laura!
LAURA
Emma? Holy shit, you scared me to death! I thought it was…
EMMA
I wish the bastard would show himself.
LAURA
I’d rather he doesn’t.
EMMA
How can you say that? Don’t you want the monster who killed Paul to be brought to justice? Or are you only scared for yourself?
LAURA
Stop it! You know I didn’t mean it that way! I know you’re hurting, but –
EMMA
Hurting? What the fuck would you know about it? My husband was tortured and died before I could save him. This is happening because of you. Whoever this psycho is…he wouldn’t be hunting us if it weren’t for you. So, spare me your bullshit, okay?
She starts walking away angrily.
LAURA
Emma! Emma! We need to stick together!
Emma doesn’t answer and takes a few more steps. Suddenly…SNAP! A loud metallic clang.
Emma lurches forward and appears to catch herself. Laura reaches out to help steady her, when she feels something wet spray on her legs. At the same time, she trips on something.
She bends down to see…blood on her clothes and the thing she stumbled on…Laura’s feet, which are bloody and…severed!
