    Amy Parker’s Terrifying Monster

What I learned doing this assignment: That my monster needs a more concrete mythology. I also need to think more carefully about the rules it has.

    1. My monster appears to be a very old woman, but is really a supernatural creature possessing her body. Think ancient demon.
    2. Their Terror: every time the current body it is in begins to rot, it traps a group of young people somewhere they can’t escape like an airplane and forces them to choose one of their own for it to possess. It reveals the darkest secrets each person is hiding to help them decide. It also manipulates their minds, amping up their fear by choosing one of them at a time to do something awful to themselves like pull out their own teeth. It turns up the paranoia so that people begin being violent with each other. It feeds off this fear and paranoia.
Their Mystery: How can the group of teens avoid sacrificing one of their own? Is there a way to stop the creature before it can possess someone new and/or crash the plane?
Their Fear-Provoking Appearance: The old woman’s body is decaying rapidly. Her teeth are rotting. She has a certain stench. Her bowels let loose toward the end. She appears to defy gravity and can crawl across the plane’s ceiling.
Their Rules: the creature can’t pick its new body. The humans have to do this. It will die if it stays in a dead body. Any person it possesses becomes part of it, living with it in every new body it possesses next.
Their Mythology: it is a demon that survives by possession as it was cast out of hell and is no longer immortal. It feeds on fear and paranoia and loves to play games.

    Harry Lauture’s Terrifying Monster

What I learned doing this assignment is how to flesh out my monster.

Their Terror: A spirit filled with anger and hate. Will attack and kill current owner and/or passengers. It will attack without provocation and randomly from a rearview mirror installed in a vehicle. It causes the victim(s) to die in horrific ways, like mimicking the exact manner of its death: the same weather and road conditions and replicating sounds like radio static, screams, injuries or crashes. You don’t know when it will strike.

Their Mystery: Why is it attacking?

Their fear-Provoking Appearance: It appears as an angry, dying, badly injured burning crash victim.

Their Rules: To be rid of it, you need to install the mirror in someone else’s car or it returns to the previous owner with vengeance.

Their Mythology: The spirit was a driver left to die in agonizing fashion, a unbelievable pain and to slowly burn to death from a hit and run.

What I learned doing this assignment is creating a monster is fun because it can be anything as long as it sticks to the guidelines of Horror. We’ll see if I stuck to the guidelines!

    Xochi’s Terrifying Monster
    • Their Terror: She erases you, consumes you, little by little, her reflection is always a few seconds behind and you might just see her real self.
    • Their Mystery: She’s been in the house for as long as anyone can remember but never seems to get older than the old lady she is
    • Their Fear-Provoking Appearance: She seems like a sweet old lady all the time but all the while is absorbing her roommates…with a smile.
    • Their Rules: You must stay for the year of the lease. The more you share with her, the better, you get consumed faster, she is only frail when someone is watching. Mirrors and memories can resist her only if you catch it early.
    • Their Mythology: She made a deal with something ancient to avoid death and offers one person a year to stay alive. She’s not one woman but she’s the latest skin worn by many.
