    ASSIGNMENT 2:

What I learned doing this assignment is the need to know your characters and have an outline of the cast. You may not use them, or you may need to introduce more but have them sitting there ready before you start.

    1. Create the three circles of characters for your show.

    A. Main Characters Circle:

DARREN ,41 yo, is a big lad; he was a big lad at school and used it to take life easy. Who needs to work when there’s lunch money to harvest from the smaller kids ? Who needs to work when there’s an easy job in the shipyard with his Da ? Well the world’s changed and easy street with it – now Darren’s fat, forty and drives a taxi.

LINDA, 38 yo, is Darren’s wife. A slightly built pretty girl she and Darren were childhood sweethearts. It sounds better that way instead of saying that the big lummox got her in the family way and her father insisted that he did the right thing. They lost the baby but she found God – it helps her cope at night when she thinks about her wee boy dying in Iraq and Wee Henry and how things could have been different.

BILLY, 22 yo, son was killed serving in Iraq and broke his parents’ hearts. Linda has found God and Darren’s found the bottle, but they know they can’t bring him back.

AARON, 23 yo, son is a thief, a druggie, a waste of skin.

KAREN is DARREN and LINDA’S 15 yo daughter and the apple of their eye. She’s a bit on the chubby side but hopefully she’ll grow out off it.

    B. Connected Circle:

WEE HENRY’S the only friend Darren has and Darren’s the only friend Wee Henry has so neither won first prize there either. They both went to school together and they’ve both disappointed themselves, and everybody else, ever since. He’s always had a bit of a crush on Linda mind but he and Darren – well they’re best mates aren’t they?

EVIL BILLY is some sort of cousin. Well that’s what Wee Henry claims. In truth Evil Billy is the illegitimate son of Wee Henry’s youngest sister, LIL THE BIKE. Who’s the Da well who knows – but sometimes Darren looks at the boy and has stirrings of a half memory of a half cut Christmas party at Wee Henry’s many years ago when the world was young ?

ROARING CECIL is a handsome young preacher man. He’s about 28 yo and dark and probably quite mad. He’s a sinner, we’re all sinners, all dammed and he spends the hours on his knees howling for salvation alone in his tin hut. His Ma ran a corner shop but she’s long dead and gone so he got a few bob there – enough to buy the Temple and a nice new preacher’s suit – but the knees are looking a bit threadbare now – really really could be a good looking boy if he tried.

    C. Environment Circle:

police; politicians, paramilitaries, developers, press & TV, planners, bankers

Lesson 2, Assignment 2: CJ’s Three Circles of Characters

What I learned doing this assignment is that the MC’s circle feels like it’s not just about knowing/interacting or even amount of time “on stage” with the MC, but rather the people who are the reason WHY the MC does what she does, provide motivations for her choices and actions—these people help drive the plot and the MC’s character arc.

For my show, working title, Patient X:

    A. Main Characters Circle:

Main Character is Dr. Angela Rossi: ER doctor who learns she is suffering from a rare, debilitating, hereditary prion disease, Fatal Insomnia, that has either driven her to delusions OR given her a newfound ability to “mindmeld” with patients who are close to death–she needs to decide to have faith in herself and follow her new psychic powers, even if it means giving up medicine and letting the rest of the world think she’s insane

Love interest is Detective Matthew Ryder, who is surprised when Rossi is able to lead him from a murdered nun who dies in Rossi’s ER to a serial killer’s lair as she convinces him to join her search for a missing girl she’s compelled to save.

“Partner in crime” is Devon Price, former gangbanger exiled by current gang leader, he returns home when his childhood sweetheart is murdered only to learn he’s a father—and his daughter is missing, he’s just as determined as Rossi to find her even if it means breaking the occasional law (or jaw)

Season 1 villain is Leo Kingston, who’s taking and killing the missing women—a genius when it comes to drug development, but a failure as a businessman trying to keep his father’s pharmaceutical company afloat, he has a secret life as a serial killer although he doesn’t choose the women he takes, but has plenty of fun killing and disposing of them after his experiments are finished… but who’s pulling his strings?

Nemesis or Big Bad for the series (revealed toward the end of Season one, I’m guessing?): a cabal led by a few select families who have for generations cultivated the gene for Fatal Insomnia, knowing that even if many die a terrible death, others develop psychic powers that are priceless, leading to the family growing in power and wealth over the centuries until now they’ve decided the only way to save the human race from certain extinction (and to preserve their own family’s position) is to artificially induce the same genetic changes wrought by Fatal Insomnia in a chosen population that they will control and use to manipulate mankind’s future. The missing children and women are part of the initial experimental cohort… as is Dr. Angela Rossi, making her a target.

The leader of the experiment is the doctor who becomes Rossi’s physician, giving him the opportunity to gain her trust along with inside knowledge of her investigation as her psychic powers manifest beyond even what he anticipated. But even he answers to the leader of the family: Rossi’s biological mother who she’s never met.

    B. Connected Circle: the dying patients who “talk” to Rossi, including the nun who commands her to “find the girl”; the girl who is missing—along with other missing children and women, victims of the killer; Rossi’s quirky adoptive family; her former boyfriend; and a variety ER friends, including Rossi’s best friend, Dr. Louise Mehta

    C. Environment Circle: various first responders, patients, families of the victims, witnesses, Devon’s old gang, residents of the gang’s housing complex, as well as the city itself, a downtrodden rust-belt town in the Pennsylvania mountains, riddled with subterranean tunnels and monstrous secrets

Lloyd Shellenberger Writing Binge Worthy TV Module 1 Assignment 2: Creating 3 Circles for the Characters

What I learned doing this assignment is how to an outline your cast. It is nice to know they are there when you need them.

    A. Main Characters Circle:

Col. Benjamin Greene. Protagonist (50’s White) He is a Commander of a Special Operations unit that works for a secret black-ops section of the Puzzle works in the Pentagon. His wife died several years ago and his job and his son are his life now. He is the perfect example of an Anti-hero. He can be a ruthless and merciless killer but always in the framework of protecting his soldiers and the US Military. His missions are off the books but have one thing in common they never see the light of day to the public. He is a former New Yorker with a never back down attitude but loyal to his friends and soldiers.

Lt. Brian Greene. (30’s, white) He is the son Col. Greene and is his father’s likeness up to a certain point. He does not have the killer instinct and drive his father does and possesses a kinder, more empathetic heart. This attribute often puts him at odds with his father, who is also his unit commander.

First Sergeant William Desmoine. (40’s black) He is an Iraqi and Afghanistan war veteran like Col. Greene who has been in his fair share of battles. He is a former Army boxer and a genuine tough guy nobody wants a piece of. He hails from New York himself and grew up on the streets. He calls it the way he sees it and backs down from no-one, not even Col. Greene his commander.

Lt. Diedra Jones. (30’s, black) She is from Atlanta and knows a little about the streets. She grew up in a middle class household though where her father was a minister and her mother was a nurse. She is tough and unafraid to scrap it out but morals play an important role in all her decisions. She is operating in a male dominated society but that doesn’t mean she is second rate. To the contrary she may be the smartest member of Col. Greene’s inner circle. She is also secretly dating Lt. Greene.

SPC. Allan Jones. (20-30’s Black Tall) He is a Philadelphia native who also joined to get away from the streets and the gang life. He never fully escaped it and has a secret that could cost him everything. When he was a younger he was involved with a robbery that cost the life of store clerk. This hangs over his head at all times. He did not kill the clerk and was not in the store at the time but he believes the law won’t care because he is black.

    B. Connected Circle:

Darren Stockton. Antagonist (40’s, White) FBI Agent Daren Stockton is a by the book relentless agent who knows the bodies and disappearances involved in the cases assigned to him are part of a bigger picture. As he puts together the facts he begins to realize Col. Greene and his men might be involved. In a perfect world he would be the Protagonist but in this case he will be the Anti-Antagonist. He harasses Col. Greene mercilessly but he cannot prove it. His career and reputation are linked to getting Col. Greene.

Major General Edwin Moses. (60’s white, distinguished) General Moses is a career Soldier and politician who served with Col. Greene in Afghanistan and is well connected to the CIA and various organizations and politicians. His is well spoken and invokes a sense of trust in others. This unfortunately, is a front as he has secretly used the Afghanistan war to become a well heeled drug lord. He uses US military assets within his scope of operation to enhance his logistics network knowing he will not be questioned. This puts him at odds with Col. Greene when the Bird is ordered to end the drug trafficking by the Puzzle Works with extreme prejudice.

    C. Environment Circle:

FBI, police, politicians, fellow soldiers in Col. Greene’s unit, press, underground criminals and gang members.

Binge Worthy Module 1, Lesson 2 Assignment 2

What I learned doing this assignment is my main characters are going to be hyper competitive. It reminds me of that really old song lyric from my grandparent’s era “Anything you can do, I can do better” in which George Burns and his wife Gracie would sing while competing with each other.

    A. Main Characters Circle:

Competing Bar owners husband Jason Macher and wife Charlotte Macher

    B. Connected Circle:

Managers of their bars, Lie Detector Expert, patrons, Repo-Woman

    C. Environment Circle:

Repo-Woman’s employees, patrons, city officials, business people and politicians

Give us a one sentence description of each of the Main Characters:

A couple set up competing bars in a pleasant middle class suburb in which they have a gimmick of the patrons being able to use a lie detector to be able to determine the intent possible love interests have toward each other. It’s very entertaining and more fun than trivia night.

Charlotte is a competitive businesswoman who left the corporate world to run a competing bar with/against her husband, Jason. Creative problem solver.

Jason is a competitive businessman who left the corporate world to run a competing bar with/against his wife, Charlotte. Also a creative problem solver.

The competition gets pretty crazy over who’s bar makes the most money, who has the best ideas to bring in customers, etc.

Hilton Garrett, Three Circles of Characters

What I learned: How to see more clearly the nature of the characters, their relationships among one another, and how to organize them according to the role and importance of each. As I considered each character through this lens I could see into their past and their future almost magically.

    Main Characters Circle

Will Calhoun – a respected newspaper reporter driven to expose and publish the truth who is burdened by guilt over the loss of his mother

Byron Rountree Jr. – a well-known politician and small town banker now running for governor who, against his will, is still in bed with an organized crime family

Becca Calhoun – Will’s wife who is now seriously considering divorce since she is fed up with Will’s reluctance to have children when that is the most important thing for her, a near obsession

Mary-Grace Lane – the owner and publisher of a small town newspaper who is attracted to Will and willing to help him solve an important mystery

Cander Martaan – an elegant man from the islands who knows a secret that will change Will’s life

    Connected Circle

Sheriff Big Jim Bridges – a big and strong man, sheriff of a small county in south Georgia who tolerates certain non-lethal crimes committed by Rountree and the mafia but is, aside from that, a fairly honest and honorable man keeping the peace

Carlo “the Grip” Santorro – a New Jersey crime boss who is expanding his operations south, encroaching on Rountree’s turf and upsetting the balance of power in the small south Georgia town and the state at large

Madam Tiffany – a mysterious seer who advises Rountree and unknowingly tips Will off to Rountree’s belief in the supernatural, and then later advises Will

Millie Barnes – owns the City Café where she serves breakfast and lunch for the farmers and merchants of the county, all the while keeping an ear out for all that goes on in the county

Bruce Wingate – a TV reporter and somewhat rival to Will who is more about looking good for the camera than digging out the facts

Vinnie – Will’s boss at the Atlanta paper who was put into his job by new owners after Will had been promised the job who rides Will mercilessly

Jack – Will’s mentor at the Atlanta paper who has taught Will the business and now tries to mentor him through rough waters only Will doesn’t ask him for help

    Environmental Circle

Clarence – mail clerk at the Atlanta newspaper

Lt. Dolan – Atlanta police detective and occasional ally of Will

Marvin Little – Rountree’s campaign manager who tries to keep Rountree’s warts out of public view

The River – a peaceful and sometimes deadly force that runs through the county past the Calhoun farm and plays a vital role in the main events of the story

Café patrons, Townspeople, Sheriff’s deputies, Santorro’s thugs and Moss Adams, the old river rat who sees all that happens on the river including one very critical event in Will’s past

Unnamed homeless man in Atlanta – Will befriends him and sometimes gives him money for food

What I learned from this lesson…The amount of time characters interact doesn’t define their level of interconnectedness, it’s the exchange of information/emotion that tells the audience more.

    Assignment 1:

    From the show Riverdale:

    A. Main Characters Circle:

    Betty/Veronica/Cheryl/Archie

    B. Connected Circle:

    Jughead/Alice Cooper/Kevin/Fred Andrews/Moose/Ms. Grundy

    C. Environment Circle:

    Reggie/Fangs/Football players/Cheerleaders/Pussycats/Sherriff/Principal

    Assignment 2:

Characters in my pilot: My P.S.

Lizzy – At 52, heterosexual Lizzy decides to make the most of a witness protection program clerical error that sends her to start life anew in Palm Springs, the gayest town in the country.

Geoff – A single, 55-year-old high-functioning alcoholic with narcissistic tendencies and a touch of OCD seems to have it all together as a work-from-home financial consultant. He’s the charming host of HOA happy hours and occasional puppeteer of his neighbor’s lives.

George & Brady – The old-school, debonair George and young, buff Brady look like the stereotypical May/December gay partnership. After 20+ years together, theirs is the most stable relationship in the group . . . until suddenly it’s not.

Joe/Josie-Real estate agent by day, drag queen by night.

Martha– Witness protection agent assigned to Lizzy’s case, also a former Midwesterner and a sounding board for Lizzy

Jon & Susan- Jon, age 58, spends his days playing golf and tennis. Leaving plenty of time for Susan, his 57-year-old wife of 20+ years, to develop an unusually close relationship with her friend, Tracy. And Jon wonders why their sex life is non-existent.

Sean – Fits every stereotype of gay Lizzy knows and is the kindest to her. He spots that she’s lying long before anyone else.

Ryan- Geoff’s 20-something son who shows up unexpectedly from college with his cat, Max. What’s happened to bring him home is still a mystery. And his tryst with Lizzy on the road trip home causes their “two ships in the night” to pass again, something neither of them planned on.

    CONNECTED CIRCLE

Raj– Newspaper Man/Uber Driver knows everyone’s secrets

Bonnie/Barb– Lesbian couple in the HOA

    ENVIRONMENT CIRCLE

HOA neighbors, seasonal residents, weekend renters in the HOA, celebrities who regularly visit the Palm Springs playground

C A Holmes Circles of Characters What I learned from Assignment 1 and 2 Having character circles makes individual scenes easy to go back and forth and also to create a cohesive story line for a binge worthy series.

    Assignment 1

    Breaking Bad

    1. Main Character Circle: Walter White, HIs wife Skyler, His Son Walter Jr. and Jessie Pinkman his cohort in Crime

    2. Connected Circle: a few of his school students and staff, His brother in law and his wife, Crazy 8 and Emilio

    My Binge worthy tv series

    1. Main Character Circle:

Eddie, genius orphan romantic who has been thrown out by his foster father without a penny and totally left to his own devices, he has been homeless and then tried a series of things unsuccessfully, before he begins to write in earnest

Ginny, his girlfriend and then wife, who is too young to know what she wants to do with her life yet. She plays the piano and sings, but unknown to them both she is soon to die.

Mariah, Ginny’s Mother, seems the most practical down to earth person, whose great gift to these two young people is to let them get married, when every bone in her body screams NO.

Kennedy, a well known successful businessman, writer and later politician, who discovers Eddie’s talent and kindly helps him on his way.

    2. Connected Circle: Eddies parents, step parents, and his friends and enemies at school and later in his artistic working world up and down the East Coast

    3. Environmental Circle: His family, step family, the family he makes, then the worlds of school, the military, then work and romance in different cities and locations up and down the East Coast. There is always this tension inside of Eddie between his relationship to the North and the South which gets expressed as part of each location.
