Megan’s Character Profiles – Part 1
What I learned doing this assignment is… that I enjoy the brainstorming part of this process: asking questions, filling in holes, discovering things I hadn’t realized yet about my characters. I find myself already thinking through the storyline, and we’re not even to the beat sheet yet. (maybe this is what they mean by “character is story”?)
My protagonist Anna Fitzgerald is both a Victim and a Dreamer. She is a victim because it is her second unborn son at stake. She is a dreamer because she wants to bring about a world where true equality is possible.
My antagonist president Bianca Harris is a Change Agent, the current president of the Matriarchy, who brings about the laws to keep women in power, even if some of those laws are not equitable.
Supporting characters:
Vice President Nova Walker
Speaker of the House Lynette Peterson
Anna’s husband David
Anna’s son Luke
Anna’s twin brother Evan
Anna‘s father, Adam, leader of the underground First Man
Minor roles:
Anna’s dead mother
Anna’s obstetrician
Ultrasound technician
Anna’s boss at the museum
Anna’s coworkers at the museum
Background characters: field trip students and teachers, museum workers, White House staffers, members of First Man, reporters, news anchors
Genre: Drama
Role in the story: Anna Fitzgerald; protagonist; make-no-waves historian
Age range and Description: late 20s/early 30s; a fit, career- and family-focused individual who enjoys her uncomplicated life
Internal Journey: from a docile rule-follower to brave protector of the weak and mistreated
External Journey: from a mere recounter of history (historian) to someone who makes history (running for President under the slogan of “True Equality for All”)
Motivation: to save her second unborn son, to see her father Adam and twin brother Evan treated fairly
Wound: resentment toward her father for never explaining why her mother died
Mission/Agenda: Assassinating President Harris since she will never voluntarily step down (in her 5th term); keep her unborn second son from harm
Secret: First she must hide the fact that she is pregnant with her second son; then she has to hide the fact she’s working with First Man to take down the President
What makes them special? Her knowledge of history, and her understanding that history repeats itself; she will not make the same mistakes. Having come from a family of men, and only having men in her household, she knows from experience how to think like a man while maintaining the heart of a woman, making her the ideal candidate to bridge the gap between genders.
Role in the story: President Bianca Harris; antagonist; a Change Agent: fifth term president not above breaking the rules to maintain her power
Age range and Description: late 50s/early 60s; a large, formidable woman with an iron will, a do-anything-necessary mentality; has two daughters; truly believe the decisions she makes are looking out for their best interests
Internal Journey: from a benevolent but shrewd leader to a heartless dictator, hell-bent on maintaining her control
External Journey: from an unchallenged, fifth term president to an assassination victim
Motivation: to create a world for her two daughters, where women have the rights they deserve
Wound: raped in college, but unable to prove and prosecute her rapist; she gave up that baby (abortion? adoption?)
Mission/Agenda: to maintain her presidency and the laws created to protect women; to eradicate the underground organization known as First Man
Secret: some of the programs she has enacted are not just focused on elevating women’s equality: they actively oppress men (estrogen vaccinations, one male child policy)
What makes them special? Extremely charismatic; her father was president before her

Amy Amani’s Character Profiles Part 1
What I learned doing this assignment is that taking the time to really break down a character is a skill that I have pushed to the background. But it really makes it so much easier when figuring out the character’s motivations.
2. Protagonist’s role: Dreamer. Ellie dreams of a better life for herself and her family. She spends the entire story chasing, and finally achieving, that dream.
3. Antagonist’s Role: Authority. The antagonist is really the System. The System is personified by Ellie’s parents and the nobility. (there will be sympathetic characters, but I have no idea who they are yet).
4. Other characters: Ellie’s family and certain key players in the Wars of the Roses will be supporting characters. Minor roles go to other historical figures from the era. Background characters will probably be soldiers, courtiers, etc.
5. Genre: Historical comedy
6. a. Role in the story: Ellie is the protagonist. She is a peasant girl in 15th Century England. She works her family’s farm hold and/or inn.
b. Age Range & Description: She is in her late teens. Because of the norms of the time, this is marrying age. At the beginning, we can see that she is an attractive girl, but plain and underwhelming. By the end she is glamorous, envied for her beauty and commands the room.
c. Internal Journey: Ellie is expected to stay in her place, don’t speak unless spoken to, mind her parents, and be loyal to the King. She starts off doing all those things. By the end, she far exceeds her station, she wuses her clever wit to manipulate the outcome of one of the most important series of battles in British history, she becomes a king maker. She still minds her parents – she’s not a monster.
d. External Journey: She lives in squalor, shares a room with her horrible little brother, wears rags and works too hard. By the end, she lives in a palace, has her own servants, wears magnificent clothes, and is the most (quietly) powerful person in the kingdom.
e. Ellie’s Want: to better herself and rise above her station. Her Need: to be heard and seen.
f. Wound: still working on this one.
g. Mission/Agenda: Outwardly it is to make a better life for herself and her family. More covertly, even to herself, it’s to break the chains of oppression against women and the lower class.
h. Secret: Ellie will have to hide her true identity from quite a number of other people as she rises through the ranks.
i. What make Ellie special: in a time when women were uneducated and had no rights, when they were considered the property of their fathers then husbands, Ellie can see a world beyond the constraints. Naturally clever and witty, she uses her smarts and (begrudgingly) her wiles to manipulate the men in power all the way up to the King.

Character Profiles Part 1 –
What I learned doing this assignment: I was profoundly amazed at how the Transformation guidelines for Assignment 1 and now these Assignment 2 questions about the characters unleashed all the info that has been stored but inaccessible in my brain cells for years after I researched the War of Independence.
I did the research in before 2009 when a crisis interrupted my life and I wrote a different play, VEILS OF JUSTICE, about that crisis and studed for two years with Screenwritingu to learn to make my writing better. Then I wrote a stage play about a post war rebellion that triggered the uniting of the 13 colonies under one Constitution.
So we’re talking 10 years + … and many attempts to start this story. Writing it in this course as a screen play because films can have many characters… At the end of these 30 days, I may revise it as a stage play with actors taking different parts as story theater (to keep budget for stage play reasonable – even 6 characters plus understudies is a lot these days)
Preliminary Lead Character Profiles
Protagonist’s role: Hero. Royal Governor Thomas Hutchinson of the British colony of Massachusetts Bay is devoted to the Mother Country because England has the only nation in the world of nations ruled by kings, tyrants and dictators that is founded, since the Magna Carta, on rule by elected representatives in Parliament’s House of Lords and House of Commons gives both the wealthy and all others the right elect their own representatives and have a say in what impacts their lives… so he will crush the attempts of any mobs and their extremist leaders to undermine British laws and destroy the unity for their own selfish, raging reasons. Besides, it takes weeks or months to cross the Atlantic so representatives cannot be in England and inform their constituents about votes. Instead the system for appointing one colonial representative who virtually represents the American colonies is the only practical way to give colonists self-government.
Age range and Description: 50s, Widowed. Elegant.
Internal Journey: From arrogant assumption that only someone from his background from “good” family, wealth, education and government experience can govern the people that, after being smothered with attention by the much more wealthy powerful people of London, leads to his despairing realization that the people he saw only as unruly mobs had real concerns that he should have listened to and a true love of democracy that he dismissed as insincere.
External Journey: From a leader fighting to save democracy and who would be praised like an Abe Lincoln for keeping the colonies united with Great Britain if he had won to his failure and being evacuated from the home and country he loves to London’s high society that he finds disgustingly self-centered…
Motivation: Mainly his desire to make sure his family remains a dominant and influential recipient royal appointments to government positions so his sons will have a good life and his daughters will marry well. And to help his brothers, cousins and other family members also stay in power and get appointed to administer whatever policies the Mother Country requires, e.g., import tariffs and sales taxes.
Wound: Since childhood, helping his father lead the colony, he has faced only jealousy and hatred from the townspeople of Boston – who praise his father’s enemy and son – the father of Sam Adams. He wants people to like his loyalty, his desire to document Massachusetts colonial history for all citizens to know and remember. Unappreciated.
Mission/Agenda: To expose and destroy radicals like Sam Adams who are using mob rule to destroy the only nation in the world to have a king who allows elected self-government in Parliament
Secret: He knows his defense of Parliament is wrong (that if the colonies have one representative in Parliament, they have self-government virtually) but personally he thinks uneducated working people are too primitive, animal and unthinking to be given the vote, even if voting for representatives in London were possible)
What makes them special? His willingness to risk his comfort and possibly life to fight all the pressures, political/economic forces and personal relationships leading to a war – and his sincere love of self-government through elected representatives, a rare structure in the 1770s, even if he limits who is educated and responsible enough to be allowed to vote. As shown in his careful writing of the full history of Massachusetts (that mobs will destroy), we can love his love of the colonies, the spirit of freedom in the American experiment, starting with his grandmother Anne Hutchinson who started her own religion and survived Native American attacks… and at the end, we can love how the truly rich and privileged nobility in London disgusts him, makes him long for the simplicity, directness and basic respect for the poor he knew but did not value in his Massachusetts colony.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Antagonist’s role: Authority. Sam Adams believes in the original charter from England to the settlers of his colony that guaranteed the right to elect representatives so the colonial settlers could govern themselves and make laws, like taxes, through the representatives of the people – and he is determined to crush any royal appointee who dares deprive colonists of their right to have a say in decisions affecting their lives.’’**
Age range and Description: early 60s, vital, quiet, asks questions more than he speaks… but has often met privately with people to ensure their answers before asked publically; ironic sense of humor – e.g. when the British move soldiers in, he praises them for saving colonists from Indians although he didn’t realize there were still attacks on Boston.
Internal Journey: From joyful, loving support of every person’s equal rights to self-government to his despairing realization that he, like Hutchinson earlier, must enforce order when people’s anger becomes so strong that they cannot listen to facts and they become violent against the government
External Journey: From radical leader for the people, demanding fairness when the government overtaxes them to emerge from a post-war depression… to new government leader suppressing a rebellion from indebted veterans (during another post-war depression) who were his friends in the build up to the war… they accuse him of becoming no different than Hutchinson now that he is in power
Motivation: Deep commitment to giving each human being full respect and participation in self government, not just from Magna Carta and the Cromwellian revolution in Britain in late 1600s, but also starting with his mother’s strong religious commitment to Congregational Church where every member votes for the minister, to his support of his father’s attempt to let the poor use land as currency – an attempt to form a “land bank” that Hutchinson’s father and Hutchinson squelched.
Wound: Disrespect shown for his father, a beer brewer, from Hutchinson and other wealthy merchants – and his own mother’s disrespect for politics, attempt to force him to be a pastor in order to get her respect.
Mission/Agenda: Midwife a new society where every person participates in a self-governing equal society.
Secret: He claims he wants people to govern themselves as equals but he wants to control how they think and make decisions.
What makes him special: His real love for people, regardless of their backgrounds; his quiet behind the scenes strategizing and mobilizing without wanting fame or fortune; his consistency and courage in taking a stand for equal rights even if it gets him at top of a king’s hanging list.
** Note – I have done years of research and written a stage play about Sam Adams but the play starts in 1781 after the end of the War of Independence when Sam is the new leader then plunges us into a 1785-1787 rebellion by veterans and farmers. This filmscript would start in 1764 and end in 1785 as the post war rebellion starts, led by a farmer/veteran who is his good friend.
Other characters that may be necessary: (I’ll do ages later – historical so have to get the books I’ve researched out)
Supporting characters:
– James Otis Jr., lawyer, who is Sam Adams’ mentor and ignited the colonies’ rebellion but who also loves the order of the Parliamentary system, fears Sam’s mobs and as Hutchinson and Adams battle their way towards 1776, Otis tries to bring them together – and ends up insane, being carted out of Boston in a strait jacket as others gear up for rebellion.
– Betsy Welles Adams, Sam’s supportive, very politically active wife
– Devoted, protective daughter of Hutchinson whose name I forget Andrew – Hutchinson’s loyal Tory African slave who detests and fears the colonists, supports top-down rule not giving the keys to low level mobs
Minor roles:
– John and Dolly Hancock, used by both Hutchinson and Adams
– Two leaders of Boston’s North End and South End mobs, used by Adams who tries to control them but sometimes end up taking over power
– Farmer who helps Adams organize countryside before the war but after leads veterans to rebel against Adams once he is in power
– Otis’ wife Ruth, a Tory who helps drive her husband crazy and supports Hutchinson
– Native American, called “Otis Two” by townspeople, originally from the Mashpee Wampanaug reservation that Otis’ family supervised, but informally adopted by James Otis, taught the law
– Judge Peter Oliver, loyalist Tory, rabidly against Adams and Otis, trying to get them and Hancock hanged.
– Prince Hall, freed slave who founds a Masonic group – part of Masonic support for Sam Adams’ demands for elective self-government… if he can control the mobs
– Sam and Betsy Adams’ two servants: Surrey, an African given to him and his wife as a wedding present but Sam and Betsy accepted her only after freeing her and she chose to stay; a white indentured servant who they raised, educated – have to find his name.
Background characters:
– Wealthy American shipping merchants like Theosophus Lillie or John Rowe who don’t like tariffs on their shipments of tea, slaves, rum, etc.
– Gang members in Boston and farmers outside of Boston who don’t like the Stamp tax on everything from cards and newspapers to weddings and funerals
– Children of Hutchinson and Adams
– Native Americans who take sides – some who side with colonists, others who fought with the French in Quebec until the war against American colonies ends at the start of this story and hate the British, and still others who like the British because they want to prevent settlers from moving into Indian Country
Freed (e.g. Moses Sash, Crispus Attucks) and enslaved Africans – Sam Adams organizes votes to ban slavery. Some support the colonists’ rebellion because of their stands for equality; others hear only words/no truth and therefore support the British who promise to ban slavery if they crush the colonies’ rebellion
Michelle’s Character Profiles Part 1
Drama
From doing this assignment, I learned to explore more about who I want my protagonist and antagonist to be, why they do what they do, and how they need to grow through this process. I was able to consider things I hadn’t thought of previously.
2. Protagonist
Role
What I learned from this assignment is how much more interesting my characters become and the possibilities of endless comedy with their additional layers.
2. Pick the type of role your Protagonist will play and give us a few sentences on how they will fulfill that role.
Dreamer – a woman in her 30s dreams of being a famous artist as she vacuums hallways and cleans the dirtiest of bathrooms in a 6-star hotel in Miami, and uses the hair clogged in the bathtub for inspiration… and the actual media for her art!
3. Pick the type of role your Antagonist will play and give us a few sentences on how they will fulfill that role.
Predator- The shark, serial killer, narcissist. no empathy for anyone. Lives on penthouse of hotel and gives maid (dreamer) bad time and complains every day and leaves no tip. She owns the prestigious hotel, and good friends with the top art gallery owner in Miami4. What other characters might be necessary?
Supporting characters: hotel manager, art gallery owner (Serge from Beverly Hills Cop), best friend,
Minor roles: art teacher, replacement art teacher
Background characters: other hotel customers & staff, surfers, gallery opening attendees
5. Pick your genre.
Comedy/drama
(Both the Protagonist and Antagonist will be clear. They operate as enemies, causing the appropriate damage for the genre. Action characters are more geared toward physical conflict, while Drama characters will be primarily experiencing emotional and mental conflict., Contrasts are designed to create laughs)6. Fill in whatever answers come to you about your lead character profiles.
PROTAGONIST
Role in the story: Protagonist, maid who is taking art classes
Age range and Description: 30’s, plus a very brief physical description combined with some kind of insight into who the character is.
Internal Journey: The character feels all this working in order to get art lesson has gone for naught as she turns 35, she feels her life is over… not married, except to her art, no prospects of selling art, just at a stale life despite her efforts.
External Journey: She has been working herself to her bones as a maid and bearing the wrath of the owner of the hotel for years. Her art teacher dies suddenly after telling her that she has no hope of ever being a “true artist” since she “does not feel enough”. The replacement teacher and classmates show up to her 35th party, and the teacher is very impressed by her work, and shows her the ropes of getting noticed and selling art at gallery showing.
Motivation:
Their want (usually to achieve a goal) – to start selling her art, and not work as a maid
Their need ( a base internal state that is missing for them) — recognition, money, to stop inhaling the unhealthy cleaning products AND latex gloves that she is allergic to
Wound: Got this job as a favour from hotel owner to her godmother , since her (almost criminal?) past, and hotel owner reminds her of it, and that she doesn’t deserve to be her personal maid (ie should be grateful for it)
Mission/Agenda: Mission: A special assignment or objective a character takes on. Agenda: A plan; something being promoted. In both, you are looking for the character’s purpose that is usually covertly hidden.
Secret: She has only given herself until her 35th birthday to be successful in the art industry, at which time, she’ll just give up
What makes them special? she uses mixed media… stealing from the hotel to bring the unexpected to her art… including the hair from the hotel owner, which is the piece of the puzzle to make her an overwhelming over-night sensation.ANTAGONIST
Role in the story: antagonist -owner of hotel and lodger of penthouse, maid’s boss
Age range and Description: 60’s, well known in the art district, best friends with art gallery owner, makes trouble for maid whenever she can
Internal Journey: She belittles others so that she feels good about herself
External Journey: She tries to stop the maid from leaving, because she wants to keep her as the maid/control. Shocked that what propels her forward to achieve her goal is right under her nose (the maid), and starts treating her differently — tries to control her to her advantage. (Change control as maid to control as artist AND maid)
Motivation:
Their want (achieve a goal) – become chair of the Art Board of Trustees
Their need – control of people, especially to do “menial” tasks (ie something she would never do, due to society status), keep social status
Wound: she is paranoid and superstitious, which lends to her OCD
Mission/Agenda:
Mission: A special assignment or objective a character takes on.
Agenda: she is trying to become chair of the Art Board of Trustees
(purpose that is usually covertly hidden).
Secret: She tries to hide her OCD by…
What makes them special? She is very direct and demanding. She is a sociopath. -
Lesson 2: Heather’s Character Profiles Part 1
What I learned: I found these characters interesting even though they are “ordinary” in many ways. Though I’ve got George as the protagonist and Rochelle as the antagonist, I almost want the two of them as a couple to be the protagonist and the danger they’re facing as the antagonist, but I wasn’t sure that’s kosher. We’ll see how it goes as the story develops.
Protagonist: George
Role: George is the reluctant hero. He would love to run away from this situation, but it’s literally life and death, they’re on an island and it isn’t possible. His life as an accountant has turned out to be tedious and disappointing but he gave up on seeking more long ago.
Age range and Description: Rochelle is 35, a manicurist with big dreams to have a product on QVC and make it big in the world.
Internal Journey: Rochelle moves from being hurt and angry to appreciating, supporting and loving George again.
OONA PROTAGONIST
<b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Explorer: She pushes the bounds of knowledge in a physical sense – by accessing her inner <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Dreamer…<font face=”inherit”> </font>imagining<font face=”inherit”> a brighter future and taking action to bring it into being.</font>
BERNHARD PROTAGONIST
Change Agent: His purpose is to cause change. Teacher, coach, guide, he has an experience of Oona’s vision… but is a petty thief himself… a <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Predator: Narcissist. Has little empathy, because he can’t focus long enough on being ordinary. He might not want to eat Oona, but is definitely using her.
Supporting characters:
BARBARA 2024 (Oona’s Mom), BARBARA 1850 (Bernhard’s Ex-Wife), THAT CHEERLEADER (2024… Bernhard’s Affairs 1850), AUTHORITY FIGURES 1850
Minor roles: Characters who are in just a few scenes. LOVE INTEREST OONA 2024, REAL ACTIVISTS, REPORTER/INFLUENCER TALENT AGENT/MARKETING SPECIALIST
Background characters: Extras needed to make it work visually. VILLAGERS and PRISON GUARDS 1850, TROLLS/FOLLOWERS/DO YOU MATTER CHALLENGE.
GENRE
BUDDY-MOVIE with ACTION/DRAMA Elements
ROLE IN THE STORY: OONA
Protagonist Oona is 17, currently avoiding school. Sees herself as an activist, wants to influence, be the voice of her generation… right now she is more of an armchair activist.
AGE RANGE/DESCRIPTION: On the cusp of adulthood. Lives with her single mom and great grand aunt. Oona is non-binary in a natural way, she is still finding herself and experimenting with budding sensuality, avoiding sexuality… due to the rare early memories she has of her parents (both actors at the time) fighting (Liz Taylor / Richard Burton energy)
INTERNAL JOURNEY: From know-it-all GenZ to appreciating the sacrifice of her ancestors in creating a peaceful modern world… even if there is still a lot to be done and a lot has been f***ed up on our way here.
EXTERNAL JOURNEY: Through Bernhard’s eyes she learns to see the miracle that is present day 2024 … also the absurdity. Becoming a powerful influencer and famous/infamous… to the wrong people. Having brands chase her to becoming a voice for Greenwashing and other dubious sales. Discerning where she wants her influence to land. Learning to control her lucid dreaming ability, futility of saving her uncle from being executed.
MOTIVATION
Oona wants to have 10k followers.
She needs to have a mission, the right place for her activism to land.
She need to understand nuances. To focus and temper her energy and tendency to self-destruct, be consumed by her creative flame burning at all ends. In two time zones.
WOUND: Oona’s father is absent. He is in the US and never came to Switzerland. Ever. I am not making a definite choice yet… is he just estranged, remarried, dead (illness or self inflicted), or just a selfish prick and/or artist. Oona starts by blaming her mother. But finds out dealing with Bernhard, what it feels like to deal with a charming but ultimately deadly narcissist with addict structure.
MISSION: To stop the execution of Bernhard in 1850
A secret AGENDA is to not throw the baby out with the bathwater… to not flat out reject Bernhard’s narcissism and her futile attempts to be seen and loved by him (proxy to her father) – but to mine and cherish his character aspects that are promising. Especially his ABILITY TO ACT. Like her mother did (who is now a guidance counsellor and addict specialist – but just in her work, no in everyday life… Barbara has learned she can only help where her help will be received).
SECRET: Oona can visit 1850-54 in her dreams. There is a price to pay (she has to do some kind of stimming, like maybe hitting her head… which is detrimental to her health obviously).
As she ‘deteriorates’ or ‘her skills augment’ – Bernhard from 1850 also becomes visible to her in 2024. In modern times it might look like she is talking to herself… but HEY, no, she’s obviously on the phone… has earbuds in, right???
WHAT MAKES HER SPECIAL:
This is my secret: I am writing her as a male… but not telling anyone.
Got this from Seinfeld… Elaine was written as one of the boys. Yep.
I have gotten feedback that my female characters tend to feel ‘unsympathetic’ to the reader… they have self-pity, ruminate and dwell instead of jumping in feet first and acting… I hope this twist will do the trick for me.
BERNHARD
ROLE IM THE STORY: Protagonist
A real life low life from 1850. Executed in 1854. Never killed anyone, only robbed the rich. Life of every party. Charming devil. Narcissistic Robin Hood. Not a leader. Strong like an ox. Could bend metal with bare hands.
AGE AND DESCRIPTION: 30s. Hot bad boy. Happy drunk. Excellent smuggler. Lone wolf, never really joined a gang. But temped to influence by real criminals with no empathy. Like Pinocchio, all he really wanted was become a real boy and be good.
INTERNAL JOURNEY: Comes to really see and care for his niece Oona from 2024. Helps her become notorious in 2024 like he was in his own time 1850. Fails to see it will end badly… neither he nor Oona have the stomach to become hardened criminals… they just have ADD… they are nomads and bohemians in a sedentary environment of farmers and a rural mindset… a society that defines itself/holds on to material goods for dear life… Curious and willing to learn about the future 2024… not necessarily his own 1854. Goes from feeling doomed to knowing his sacrifice will change the justice system. Goes from trying to escape everything and everyone to ‘humbly’ accepting his fate. Losing his head.
EXTERNAL JOURNEY: To be wealthy and admired, have the good life without working. Thinks this is possible in the US, but can’t get himself to actually leave – is tethered to the soil of Kanton Aargau and his wife Barbara. Regularly lets himself get captured, because the one thing he is good at is breaking free. He can escape any jail with his wits and his tenacity… is erudite about buildings, was trained as a mason, bricklayer… and human empathy he can count on from others. Not afraid to ask for anything but real help.
MOTIVATION: System Crasher. Trouble maker. A life less ordinary. Being seen as a Robin Hood and Don Juan… without wanting to commit or actually lead, focus, have a vision beyond his own instant gratification. Influences Oona to become a socialite (in a country that hates making waves… coz that means enemies will be coming for your money, honey), throw a party, entertain and tell a great joke. To make em laugh.
WOUND: Believes he is unloveable. Incorrigible. But it’s just ADD. He would have made a great Robin Williams. (Which sadly ends badly as well, sob.)
MISSION/AGENDA: To escape. Reality. And real connection. To live a decent and ordinary life. Yawn.
SECRET: Is visited by an angel from 2024 that wants to save his life… change his ways… but he puts the shoe on the other foot to make her more like him…
WHAT MAKES HIM SPECIAL: He was larger than life, it now a mythical character – the stuff of legends. When we was beheaded, it is said his head rolled off stage and bit a fair maiden in her lower leg/calf… a doctor stole his head and put it in his night stand… but it was found and thrown out by the maid, at his public execution rubberneckers stole his clothes and blood (that they though imbued him with magical powers), to this day his grave/body has not been located.
Jane’s Character Profiles Part 1
By doing this assignment I discovered the story that I want to write. I kept coming back to Chelsea and seeing her in a different role than what my original concept had in store for her. It made me super excited to see what Chelsea’s journey is. It’s much darker than my original ideas but I think it will be much more fun to write and a MUCH MORE marketable concept.
Protagonist: Chelsea Walters is a victim/fighter. Quiet woman who would rather give in to what others want than rock the boat. When she allows herself to be drawn into a world of deceit and danger, she must become a fighter to survive.
Antagonist: Julie Wallace is a predator. Julie is the ultimate manipulator/survivor. When pushed to the wall, Julie finds the best way out is to set someone else up to take the blame and punishment for her sins.
Supporting characters: Julie’s finance Derek; Derek’s best friend Kevin; Johnny – the hit man focused on killing Julie; Michael – the M5 agent focused on keeping Julie alive to testify; Mr. & Mrs. Patterson, friend of Julie’s parents.
Minor Roles: Chelsea’s husband Marty; Julie’s parents; Linda and Susan – two bridesmaids; Mrs. Miller – Julie and Chelsea’s 5<sup>th</sup> grade teacher.
Background Characters: People at a wedding; people on a cruise ship; cruise ship crew.
Genre: Romantic Thriller
Chelsea Walters:
Role in the story: Protagonist. She starts out as someone who is too timid to rock the boat and become the architect of her own life. She must grow from a victim, to a fighter and eventually to a hero in order to realize the life she has always wanted.
Age Range and Description: 25 – 30 years old; very beautiful but dowdy – Julie’s doppelganger.
Internal Journey: From too timid to rock the boat to captain of the boat.
External Journey: From quiet woman who would not hurt a fly to a force to be reckoned with.
Motivation: To be happy.
Wound: Growing up impoverished taught her to never want anything because she isn’t worthy. She will never be good enough.
Mission/Agenda: To discover a new life by reuniting with her childhood friend.
Secret: She loves Derek.
What makes Chelsea special? She is a keen observer. Once she is no longer timid, her ability to assess the situation and act is phenomenal.
Julie Wallace:
Role in the story: Antagonist. She is a manipulator on the run. When she runs out of those in her circle to manipulate, she turns to her past for new victims to save her own skin.
Age Range and Description: 25 – 30 years old; very beautiful with expensive, refined taste – Chelsea’s doppelganger.
Internal Journey: From totally in control to so out of control she can’t survive.
External Journey: From getting married to almost getting away with murder.
Motivation: Greed.
Wound: She knows she is only loved and admired for her beauty and what she has, not who she is.
Mission/Agenda: Fleece her parent’s new rich friends and get away from the people who make her run contraband.
Secret: She will be terrified of something that allows Chelsea the upper hand.
What makes Julie special? Julie is like the sun. People respond to her beauty and don’t realize the web that she’s pulling them into. People want to be associated with her, no matter what she does.
-
Jen’s character profiles – part 1
What I learned doing this assignment is about the different types of protagonists and antagonists. It really helps to define them this way to narrow down how they are going to act in a certain situation. In something else I was writing recently we assigned characters the “flight, flight, or freeze” reaction which was cool, but only focused on one aspect of the personality. This expands it greatly.
Pick the type of role your Protagonist will play and give us a few sentences on how they will fulfill that role.
Runner – Jaleo is
a runner, always trying to get away from something, whether it his own actions,
his past, his upbringing, the truth, whatever…he is trying to get away
from it. In a generation that has no accountability for their actions,
Jaleo cannot own up to what he did – outwardly anyway – everything that
happened was someone else’s fault, it was because of how he was raised,
where he grew up, what others did to him – but deep down inside I’m
betting (oh goodness, I’m already thinking about him like he’s a real
person…) that he really does blame himself – for EVERYTHING – and if he
was to admit it, he probably couldn’t even live with himself…3. Pick the type of role your Antagonist will play and give us a few sentences on how they will fulfill that role.
Villain – a group
of boys who are also at the training facility for community service but it
is part of their honor society – not through the court. They are in everyone’s
eyes the good boys, the ones who do everything right, but behind closed
doors they are even worse than the boys in the ‘hood. They find out why
Jaleo is there and torture him, telling him they are going to tell
everyone. There is one “leader” and the others who go along with him, but
they even reach a point where they think he’s gone too far…4. What other characters might be necessary?
Supporting
characters: the family – probably just mom and her daughter who is in a
wheelchair, employee at the center who is Jaleo’s supervisor, love
interest (?) for Jaleo – or do we just keep it “love” of family, self,
etc. and leave romance out of it? (maybe he does try and the boys ruin it
for him but he needs to learn to love himself first anyway)
Minor roles:
Jaleo’s gang, other people getting dogs, Jaleo’s DYS people (he lives in a
host home), host family, boys at center
Background
characters: employees, people getting dogs, other volunteers5. Pick your genre.
Drama – dog movie
6. Fill in whatever answers come to you about your lead character profiles.
Role in the story:
Protag, student, volunteer at READS dog training facilityAge range and
Description: 16/17, BIPOC (half black, half Hispanic)Internal Journey:
self-love, accountability, caring for othersExternal
Journey: volunteers just to look good for judge but then meets a dog who
is just like him – they form a bond, when a little girl in a wheelchair
comes for her training, he finds out she was the victim of the drive-by
shooting in which he was drivingMotivation: he
wants to fit in
Wound: in foster
care his whole life, experienced abuse in foster homesMission/Agenda:
to look good for the judgeSecret: really
hates himself, not everyone else as he tries to portrayWhat makes them
special? Deep down he really has a big heart that he has been hiding -
Susan’s Character Profiles Part 1
1. Abbey, best friend to Shelby, supports her friend’s insecurities and talks her through her panic episodes, usually with a glass of wine in hand.
2. Sam, best friend to Liam, not always an advocate for Shelby. He grew up with Liam and occasionally resents sharing time with the fiancée.
Roxanne’s Character Profile Part 1
What I learned doing this assignment is the strength in the depth of character. The deeper and more layered my characters are, the better my script.
My Protagonist is Robert (Robby) Grady Johnson, a victim of childhood abuse at the hands of his stepfather and his mother who was also abused and afraid to step in. He was a victim of abuse by society, which in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, did not accept homosexuality. He further became a victim at the hands of his lover Jay Wesley Neill.
Age Range and Description: Male, 21 years old, blonde hair blue eyes who looks like a model and is impeccably groomed.
Internal Journey: From an abused, naive 21-year-old to a mature adult who understands reality.
External Journey: From a care-free party-boy to a man with the mental strength to survive the cruel world of prison.
Motivation (Want/Need): His “want” is to either “fix” Jay and have a healthy relationship or to get away from him. His “need” is overcome the cycle of abuse.
Wound: His childhood trauma of being abused and his inability to stop his step-father from abusing his mother.
Mission/Agenda: To live a life of love, free from abuse.
Secret: His failure to save his mother from abuse.
What makes Robby special? His heart. He studied ministry in college and really just wanted to help people.
My antagonist is Jay Wesley Neill, a villain and a predator. In an effort to control their relationship, Jay mentally and physically continuously beat up his lover Robby Johnson. His manipulative, narcissistic personality led him to become a serial killer.
Age Range and Description: Male, 19 years old, blonde hair blue eyes who looked almost identical to Robby.
Internal Journey: From a toxic, controlling, manipulative narcissist with low self-esteem to acceptance of a life on death row with no control over anything.
External Journey: From a flamboyant, unstable and violent sociopath to an apologetic, “born-again” Christian accepting his ultimate fate.
Motivation (Want/Need): His “want” is money and to be admired. His “need” is to control everything in his life, especially Robby.
Wound: His childhood trauma of being abused by his stepfather and un-acceptance by society for his sexual preference.
Mission/Agenda: To rob a bank in order to have the money he believes he needs to keep Robby in the relationship.
Secret: Behind his mask of extreme confidence, Jay is unsure of his self-worth and is easily upset by criticism.
What makes Jay special? Initially charming, witty and sociable, Jay’s mental illness quickly reverts into that of a cold, calculated sociopath.
What I learned: It’s sometimes necessary to slow down to go fast later.
Protagonist/Lead Character: JP – tiny, middle-age, looks younger than her age of forty, self-contained, private, comes from a complicated family with the blood of three races. If you know nothing else, about her, you know she comes from money and is highly intelligent.
…her external journey: to welcome and fully acknowledge her gift, to become more relaxed with her total identity, be grateful that it allows her to stay connected to Tony after he dies.
…her wound: a lifetime of hurt from family and friends. She doesn’t trust easily and keeps everyone at arms’ length.
What makes her special? She’s a multi-talented woman with a distinct sense of style; a class act who’s an expert at deflecting answers to questions she doesn’t want to answer and keeping people away from her. She’s a walking contradiction.
Antagonist: Tony – tall, highly intelligent, good looking man in his forties, overwhelmed by his feelings for this tiny woman he’s been watching for twenty years. He too comes from money.
…his internal journey: overcome his fear of speaking to her. She is unlike any woman he’s ever known, much less attracted to.
…his external journey: to let her know how he feels about her and act on his feelings/belief that she could be the love of his life.
…his wound: has never believed he would find anyone to really love him, that he’s unworthy of love.
Sean’s Character Profiles Part 1
What I learned doing this assignment:
I can see the story forming as I fill in the choices, the roles, the quick statements and decisions. I can also see my protagonist and antagonist a little better. I’m starting to know who they are going to be and how awesome this process is in helping me get there.
Type of role my protagonist is: Hero
After a dramatic transformation, the dreamer Seven Thomas will become convinced he is the only one that can find the Rain Killer and when he sets out to do so, it will set off a chain of events that will having him needing to catch and kill the Rain Killer as well.
The role my antagonist will play is: Predator
The Rain Killer started by looking for victims every three months and now he is hunting his next victim on a daily basis. To say he is elusive is an understatement. The FBI and every other form of law enforcement is way too far behind and not even close to building an accurate profile. The Rain Killer is an evil like no other 10 years after his first victim was found.
Supporting characters, minor roles and background characters will all be necessary for this story.
Genre: Horror/Thriller
Seven Thomas’s role in this story is to reflect the audiences desire to have the Rain Killer stopped by any means necessary and at any cost as well as revealing who the Rain Killer is and why he is doing what he is doing, along with why law enforcement will never be able to identify him. Seven personifies the helplessness of the country, the victims and the law before transforming into the hero and showing us the Rain Killer is just a man after all.
Seven starts out in his late teens and ends the story in his early thirties.
Internal Journey – from hopeless dreamer, young, naïve to apex hunter and killer, cunning and brutal
External Journey – from aspiring writer to the one who tracks and kills the Rain Killer.
Seven’s motivation is becoming the person who can identify and catch the Rain Killer.
The wound is a second girlfriend saying he will never leave his parent’s house or truly fulfill his dreams.
Seven wants to prove his girlfriends wrong and do something no one else can do, especially a dreamer, loser and future failure like him.
Seven’s secret is the force or spirit helping him to become the only person who can identify, track, find, and stop/kill the Rain Killer.
The true scope of the transformation Seven will go through and his willingness to surrender to unknown forces helping him along the way.
Suddenly thrust into a savage world, alone, an insignificant orphan, except he is different than all the rest. He alone will stand up against the Danes, the colluding Irish Kings, and traitorous High King
Age range and Description: As the story begins, Brian is 10 when the Danes attack. . Surviving the meat grinder of 11 older brothers – he is well suited to “run the gauntlet of slaughter!” Fearless, competitive, strong, smart, experienced in survival, as a boy, red hair, as a youth, taller, stronger, yet compassionate for anything bullied. And ready to fight all bullies, or berserkers, messy, unlikely King material. Just wants to go fishing.
Internal Journey: From feeling, powerless, lost, alone, shamed he could not protect a little girl, bullied, no vision for future – to loss of innocence, surviving, witnessing evil, vowing to end it, making a friend, finding a way to escape a tower, Danes, and a destroyed life – to having a dream of fixing it all, hope for the future, his first whisker, and a plan – starting with finding the little girl from the burning tower.
Motivation: Want – to drive the Danes from Ireland, restore peace and freedom. Need – restore the love, belonging, family, home that is missing in his life.
What makes them special? Brian accomplishes what no other ever has – a united Ireland, in freedom and peace for 12 years. He refuses to stand by, to surrender for peace or gold, he is a Christian King, unlike all the others, in name only who slaughter their enemies – Brian keeps letting his go. Sadly, and ironically they will get him in the end.
Antagonist – Malachy –
Role – Heir to the Throne of High King, had it all, given to him, 600-year precedent.
Description – a couple of years younger than Brian, smaller, dark hair and eyes, rich, arrogant, envious of Brian, made insecure by his father, that Brain is more loved.
Internal Journey – snotty little rich kid, entitled, to more and more envious of Brian, has not the courage to be loyal.
External Journey – from heir to High King, to High King, losing it to Brian, then, lying, cheating, stealing, betraying him in the end to get it back.
Motivation – betraying Brian at every step from childhood on, his father’s apt pupil. His weakness, jealously of everything Brian, wins, has, accomplished.
Wound – His father, Leira, his men, the people, all love and admire him more. His father the High King, keeps goading him, that Brian will surpass him, and he will be the one to lose the High Kingship after 600 years.
Day 2 Who Are We Traveling With
James’ Character Profiles Part 1
What I learned doing this assignment is by starting with the fill in the blanks approach leads me to further character development and story extrapolation which rounds out the details of the script. It is a targeted brainstorm session that lets me see potential scenes, situations and dialogue.
The protagonist is Jessica Blue, the hero of the story, who is on the journey of change where she follows her ambitions even though at first she is hindered by the lack of decisive action. She’s the love interest of the story’s change agent.
The love interest or story antagonist is Rufus Winter who serves as the change agent as he helps Jessica adjust with new circumstances in her life (business and social); some being of which totally new experiences.
The supporting characters include Jessica’s best friend, her tyrant boss, all of her customers and new people she meets along her journey.
The minor roles would include Rufus’ business associates, his personal staff and all the people he meets on his dealings.
Romantic comedy is the genre for this story.
Jessica Blue:
· Role in the story: she’s the protagonist who will go on the transformational journey.
· Age range and Description: she’s in her late 20s. She’s very sharp in many ways and does not know it yet, but could be ultra-attractive if she wanted to.
· Internal Journey: from having a subservient mindset to being her own boss.
· External Journey: from being trapped in dead-end worker roles to owning her own business
· Motivation:
· Wound: she never knew her mother as she passed when Jessica was very young; she feels she missed out on female sensibility in her life.
· Mission/Agenda: she wants to open a boutique.
· Secret:
· What makes them special? She’s a very quick learner and mentally sharp.
Rufus Winter:
· Role in the story: he’s the love interest who will serve as the change agent even though he’ll have a transformation of his own.
· Age range and Description: he’s in his early 40s. A high-class man with expensive tastes and expects more so in a potential partner in life.
· Internal Journey: from high-class thinking to free-spirit, more accepting of those “beneath” him.
· External Journey: from executive of a single firm to entrepreneur of diverse companies.
· Motivation: making more money the better
· Wound: has not had a relationship since his college days. Perhaps had his heart broken.
· Mission/Agenda:
· Secret:
· What makes them special? He’s a wealthy businessman, but deep down he’s a caring man.
What I learned:
That it’s easy, especially in horror, to fall into typical characters. The macho guy who dies right away, the damsel in distress, the hapless hero. I need to stretch these characters more…I will be doing extensive interviews!!!
Protagonist: Nick- Runner 28 yrs old. He runs from an empty past. fills his life with weird objects and adventure. He’s an orphan who was raised by his grandmother who had dementia. What makes him special: He’s truly an empty vessel…ready to be filled with the right stuff.
Antagonist: Koschei – Predator ancient. An eternal demon relegated to the underworld. He preys upon souls, especially those of women. He can manifest in other thin, gaunt men acting as a father figure. What makes him special: His never ending hunger for domination over everything. His deviousness.
Love Interest: Naya- Ben’s fiancee. Bored beauty queen discovering that the life she wanted isn’t the life she needs. She has diminished her own value and intelligence in exchange for stability and money. What makes her special: She’s more than a pretty face.
Supporting Character: Ben. Douche bag leader of the adventurers who seeks to manipulate and bully the group into risky activities. He hovers over Naya. Believes he’s on a higher plane and destined for greatness. What makes him special: His perspective on the world…get the best of it before it gets the best of you.
Genre: Horror
30 DAY SCRIPT CLASS
ASSIGNMENT 2
Dominic’s Character Profiles Part 1:
What I learned from this assignment was that I have to let go of some of the old habits I have from old classes and really come to terms with speed writing. I’m so used to the Proseries or Masterclass where you take a few months to come up with scripts and character profiles, so it was very surprising to read the words “JUST GO WITH THE FIRST THING THAT POPS IN YOUR HEAD” from an S.U. assignment. But I’m getting better at it and discovering a lot of things about this story that I had no idea about and probably never would stuck with if I had more time.
WOUND: He never talks bout it but he saw his dad die OR saw his family crumble as his father went through a few horrible years where he took a chance, started his own business, lost of all the family’s money and had no job for years. He drank hismefl to death (AND WAS A MONSTER of sorts) to James, his brother, and mother. So James… (THIS IS AN ECHO OF THE THE THEME…) so James has been through rough times and doesn’t want to edn up like his father.
(ONE OF THE MONSTERS IN THE END CAN BE HIS FATHER/ POSESSED FATHER, ETC.)
MISSION/AGENDA: To discvoer what’s happening at his house and the neighbors, an event that’s interrupting a party he’s hosting.
