Assignment 2:
Subject: Marcus Wolf’s Three Circles of Characters
What I learned doing this assignment is that the characters tell the story. Not necessarily with what they say, but through their journey. The story is there for the characters, the characters are not there for the story. I’m doing a historical drama and my idea had been to tell the story according to history and have the characters show up as needed. It will actually be much more engaging to specifically follow the main characters as they move through the events. Separating the characters into three categories really helps on a number of levels. It clarifies every character’s purpose and what you can and shouldn’t do with them.
The three circles of characters for my show:
A. Main Characters Circle:
– Harold Godwinson – The second son of a powerful English Earl, he will work his way from a minor Earl to become King of England.
– William of Normandy – The bastard child of a powerful French Duke, he constantly defends his dukedom from those who would take it from him by force. Overcoming extreme odds, he will consolidate his power in France, then set his sights on conquering England.
– King Edward of England – Having returned from a life of exile in Normandy as an older man, Edward is uncomfortable in England. He hates his bitter rival, Earl Godwin of Wessex.
– Earl Godwin of Wessex – The most powerful man in England after the king, Godwin wants all of his sons in positions of power and a grandson on the throne.

– as yet unnamed advisor to Harold

– Judith of Flanders (William’s wife)

Connected circle: Tyrell Wellick, Angela, Shayla, Darlene, Krista, Gideon, Ollie
Environment circle: Hackers, Allsafe employees, E Corp employees, lawyers, men in black
-
What I learned in doing this assignment was to flesh out characters that needed more development.
Main characters circle:
1. Jill DiVarco – Late 20s, grew up in the mob world. She’s a collector for the Outfit who sees her male counterparts making money hand over fist and she wants a piece of that. She has anger issues and having a collection job helps her physically relieve some of those issues. These are issues that stem from childhood and events that led to her father’s murder at that time.
2. Jimmy Losito – early 40s, well established street boss/Caporegime of his crew. Has worked hard to get where he’s at. He’s one of the more successful crew leaders and knows that jealous eyes amongst the various crews target him. He is on a mission to be head boss of the entire Outfit.
3. Ernest “Ernie” Scalise – 60s, sadistic and maniacal rival crew leader of Jimmy’s. He’s the villain in the story. Though a brutal, barbaric leader, the Outfit bosses tolerate him because he’s a good earner. He and Jimmy have history so he is Jimmy’s #1 threat. He also is the main culprit in Jill’s father’s murder, so she seeks vengeance upon him even as he strikes fear in her heart.
4. Nicky Palladino/Nick DeFazio – 30s, low level mob associate. He’s an obnoxious and irritating crew member, but it’s a cover – he’s a government mole unbeknownst to anyone in the Outfit.
Connected circle:
1. Ray Napoli – Late 20s, low level mob associate and ex-boyfriend to Jill. He’s a collector like Jill, but also a degenerate gambler. He owes the mob a considerable amount of money. He’s jumpy character because he believes he’s in the crew’s crosshairs due to his debts. Secretly he does side deals with Ernest… to help his financial situation.
2. Giovanni “Gio” DiVarco – 30s, Tough but loving father to Jill and his two sons. Made member who’s attempted murder by Ernie Scalise sparks a war between crews.
3. Marion DiVarco – 30s/50s, reserved, anxious wife to Gio and stepmother to Jill. She’s bitter after the death of her husband and helpless to keep her two sons out of the life. She has a strained relationship with Jill.
4. Natalia Wojcik – 30s/50s – mother to Jill, hooker, girlfriend to Gio DiVarco.
5. Angelo “Jelly” DiVarco – Gio’s brother and uncle to Jill and her stepbrothers. Also her boss at the bar he owns and she works at. He’s a slimy character who cuts corners and never gives a straight answer. He’s also very “handsy” with the women that work for him, including with his own niece, Jill. He’s not a made member due to his sleazy character and cheap ways with money.
6. Gerald Amato – 40s, Jimmy driver and right hand man. He and Jimmy go way back to their beginnings in the Outfit. Jealous of Jimmy’s favoring of Jill over him in certain situations. Skeptical of Jill’s intentions and her loyalty to the crew.
7. Pasquale DiVarco – early 30s, Jill’s older half-brother. Mob associate who has a hard time earning for the crew.
8. Salvatore “Salvie” DiVarco – early 30s, Jill’s older half-brother. Mob associate but doesn’t have much of a heart for the life. Tries to forge a life in a legitimate line of work but thanks to his association with the Outfit, it’s next to impossible.
Environment Circle: Mob members and associates, Police, FBI agents, attorneys, judges, District attorneys, States attorneys, U.S. attorneys, barmaids, bar patrons, prostitutes, airport workers, Union officials.

THE 100
Three Circles Of Characters Assignment 1What I learned from this class: How characters interlaced in different degrees can successfully be used on screen to create a solid environment to tell a story. All character’s actions and reactions contributed to world building with and without dialog. However, it is impossible to keep up with their names since they use nicknames sometimes, and I have not had time to verify my notes from the script yet.
MAIN CHARACTER CIRCLE
Lead character is Clarke Griffen, daughter of Dr Abigail Griffen (ALSO A MAIN CHARACTER) who sits on the Ark’s Council to make Ark policies) Clarke is imprisoned and kept in solitary confinement for knowing too much about the equipment failure and depletion of Oxygen in the Ark.
Bellamy “Space-walker” Black is a janitor suspected of shooting the Chancellor by Ark management. His parents were spaced by the Chancellor for having a second child and hiding her below the floor. Bellamy somehow has a gun, and arrives aboard the drop-ship in a guard’s uniform to be with his sister, Octavia. He is a natural leader and commands loyalty of most of the ones planetside. He calls them “his people” and listens to Clarke’s advice. They are gradually becoming close.
Finn(?) Wells gets himself arrested to follow Clarke to apologize for turning her dad in and causing her imprisonment and solitary confinement because she knows the Ark is running dangerously out of oxygen due to equipment failure. Both Clarke (the Doctor’s daughter) and Wells (the Chancellor’s son) are intelligent and educated rule-followers. but are at odds because of his having turned in her father for wanting to warn citizens of impending failures of equipment aboard the Ark.
Octavia Black: Bellamy’s sister (called “the Girl who lived under the floor”). Forever confined and hidden, she wants to experience life and is passionate to do everything. Her brother has his hands full here and Atom is interested in a relationship.
SECOND CIRCLE:
Techno-nerds: Jasper is enamored of Octavia (Bellamy’s sister) Works as feel good comic relief.
Monty is from a farm station and is an engineer.Murphy has attitude and is the bully waiting for his chance to take over. He hates Wells because his father was spaced by the Chancellor and is interested in a relationship with Clarke, but can’t compete with Bellamy.
Atom is asked to keep an eye on Octavia and ends up kissing her—her brother ties him to a tree for insubordination
Aboard the Ark, Chancellor Thelonious Wells allows the 100, including his son, to be dropped onto the planet to discover if it is safe to send citizens down yet. Doing so has given the Ark one week’s reprieve from needing to cull 109 citizens to keep the rest alive.
Aboard the Ark, Kane: seeks to overthrow the Chancellor and take command of the Ark. Dr. Abigail is his nemesis.
Aboard the Ark, Raven: a zero-G mechanic who while looking to visit her boyfriend in lockup is told they are being quarantined but reasons it’s a ruse and decides the prisoners have been shipped out. After being confronted, Abigail confirms her suspicions and consigns her to fix a hundred-year-old drop pod so they can check on the situation on the planet themselves.
The grounders: natives of the planet before they arrive, and background citizens on the Ark.

Rael Point: (middle aged, mid 30’s) Universal Government Dark Ops Agent, Captain of the Nemesis, the only person to have ever escaped the Hive Penal Planet as a newborn, rescued by a Gov Agent, Marion Mahata, he had already been implanted with the Hive temple plates allowing him to wirelessly interlink to anything with a electronic pulse as well as to access the universal web. He currently leads a specialized dark ops Nemesis Team, a seeker squad. He is more comfortable with tech than people, he has muted emotions. He mourns in moments, cannot cry for long, anger dissipates as it is born. He has never known elation.Ira Haze: (early 20’s) Wall Master, a highly trained empath, able to rewrite minds and/or control them. He has steel gray multifaceted crystalline eyes denoting him as a rogue talent. He is a psionic Finder, able to track any target from emanations left upon items. Enslaved at a young age alongside his younger sister, Alandra, after his parents were murdered by planetary control during the anti-Psi movement, he was stringently taught control of what powers his captors knew he possessed. He speaks softly but can always be heard and prefers the quiet and safety aboard the Nemesis. He is grateful and loyal to Rael for saving him and his sister from The Wall, a Corporately operated facility used to keep mostly their workers aligned to production by using Psionic manipulation in the guise of an empathy station. He is a tortured young man destined to be alone even in a crowd. Skin-to-skin contact with him can be dangerous. Everyone aboard the Nemesis wears gloves.
Laynald Lockheim: (a smart 63) Team’s Healer/Assassin/Strategist Once a King’s Healer on a backward planet, he is dedicated to Rael for saving his life and giving him a new future. He is older and feels the need to watch over the others. He is also the one who does, without qualm, whatever needs to be done. He doesn’t differentiate between healing or killing and he’s extremely good at both. He is hyper suspicious, always prepared, armed to the teeth, and a little bit sadistic, but beneath it all, he cares for his teammates
Tristen: (early 20s or so) Selected as a CHOSEN one by the 3 Oracles who rule Oracle Earth in another dimension. They prophecy she will save their planet in the future. At the age of 10, she is surgically blinded and set to drift in cryo ship in Origin Earth’s dimension. She is found as a grown woman by slavers and sold to Mallory Switt, eventually she is claimed by The Corporate Overlord and under the guise of a terrorist Psi Ring who the Nemesis has been searching for, she is used to attract Rael’s attention. She is the one who Psi-jacked the ambassador and when she tries to do the same to Rael, she is captured and taken away. She knows she has a mission and awaits the moment she will know what to do. Until then, she does as she’s told. Her planet’s survival depends on it.
CONNECTED CIRCLE:The Oracles: 3 long-lived balding old men whose predictions always come true. For centuries, they have guided and aided their world’s betterment.
Mallory Switt: Slaver and proprietor of two entertainment facilities on pleasure planet Tanivol. He has a sadistic twisted mind and enjoys his wealth. It is he who enslaves and discovers her abilities. He uses her to ensnare corporate information and prospers greatly doing so. Though he is frequently cruel, he also protects her from other things until Harbringer catches him and takes her away to become bait to lure Rael with.
T.L. Harbringer: (looks about Rael’s age but is centuries old) Known as The Corporate Overlord, his rule spans across galaxies. He runs the Hive Penal Planet for The Universal Government. He is cruel and arrogant, the most powerful man in existence but goes unnoticed. His smile exudes no warmth, his chiseled features and fierce cold eyes are devoid of humanity.
Alandra Haze: (2 years younger than Ira) she is Ira’s sister, a telepath now working for The Universal Government Psi Ops division. She couldn’t handle Rael’s compu-links and didn’t like his disregard of how it hurt her brother. She is very judgmental of her brother’s choice to remain as part of Rael’s team.
Marion Mahata: Head of Dark Ops for the Universal Government. Nemesis Teams sponsor and commanding officer as well as adoptive mother of Rael.
Lythia Lyconza—Marion Mahata’s successor as The Universal Government’s head of Dark Ops and an acquaintance from Rael’s youth. She is Rael’s age and has crimson colored hair and blue-green eyes, a very rare side-effect of genetic enhancement.
Ambassador Walter Dash: Gov ambassador mind-jacked on the way to an important assignment. He is found barely conscious writhing in pain and unable to talk. The team rescues him.
Officer Dinak & Officer Banks: assigned by Planetary Retrieval Bureau on pleasure planet Tanivol, to return Government Ambassador into Universal government control, attempt to capture Rael but are easily defeated and sent to the Planetary Deportation Bureau to be turned over to the Hive Penal Planet.

Lesson 2, Assignment 2
Subject: Phyllis Strong’s Three Circles of Characters
What I learned from this assignment was that I could find connected characters by treating my main characters as a the hub of a wheel and branch off from that. I devised family members, love interests, ex-love interests, and employees and figured a journalist (who as yet is fairly undefined) would be a fitting character in this series. I also found the environment circle easier than I anticipated, by taking the main focus of the main characters and building a world of EPA officials, climate scientists, firefighters, oil conglomerate execs and politicians.
Main Characters
SASHA LAMBERT (30) is a pragmatic, by the book investigator for the EPA who is betrayed by the institution she loves when she is dismissed from her job as part of a ground-breaking settlement with an oil conglomerate.
DUNCAN PRICE (50’s) is the idealistic black-sheep of the family that controls the afore-mentioned oil conglomerate, who wants to atone for the sins of his family by slaying the monsters that have been spawned by the high level of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.
DELIA PRICE (50’s) is Duncan’s shrewd and manipulative older sister, the star of the family, who is now the CEO and positioning the family oil conglomerate as a responsible, sustainable partner in fighting climate change.
-
Lesson 2, Assignment 2 (Continued)

Duncan’s ex-wife who is still close to Delia
Duncan’s quirky climate science professor friend
The founder of the climate change forecasting company that Duncan invested in
Delia’s female sustainability chief at the oil conglomerate
Delia’s fixer who keeps an eye on Duncan
Journalist who is tracking Duncan and Sasha’s activity
Environment Circle
Environmental Activists
Biodiversity professor
Climate scientists
Firefighters
Disaster Relief Workers
FEMA Executives
Tornado chasers
Oil Conglomerate Execs
Politicians who are pro-environment that Duncan supports financially
Politicians who are pro-fossil fuel that Delia and her company supports

THE 100
Three Circles Of Characters Assignment 1What I learned from this class: How characters interlaced in different degrees can successfully be used on screen to create a solid environment to tell a story. However, it is impossible to keep up with their names since they use nicknames sometimes, and I have not had time to verify from my notes from the script.

Diana’s Three Circles of Characters
What I learned: Let perfectionism go. Just leave it at the door and know it’s there for the taking when finalizing a script. It’s OK to fumble and send in imperfect assignments, and to keep going even if I don’t have all the answers yet or fully know how all the characters will interact. I didn’t realize there were so many circles the characters in shows ran in. It was fun to watch the show and designate who goes where. After reading the examples and doing the first assignment, the world of my show is starting to take shape.

Lesson 2 Assignment 1
“What I learned doing this assignment is…”
I would have to say that I began to look at the outer circles of characters in a different way and questioned whether they would either play a bigger role in the upcoming episodes, or quietly lose their air time? But, it also really made me question the layers of characters that I would be introducing in my pilot and who would make the cut for thee initial introduction…hmmm? But also for my own creating, whoa! There is so much tip toeing around these circles when trying to critique who fits where JUST FOR THE PILOT…

I agree with your sentiment about trying to decide who’s making the cut, haha! Since your main characters are related to one another, you have so many ways you can take this. I can see that their family loyalty would create a strong bond, and yet tempers could erupt and deteriorate that bond. This is going to get interesting, I can tell. 🙂
-
Why thank you!!
It’s always nice to hear from ya 🙂
I swear, it takes me days to do my assignments…between work, kids, fiancé, LIFE, home…just finished Lesson 3’s assignments and rushing to get kids from school, make them a quick meal and off to work I will go…what about you?

YES! I just started a new job, so my brain is FRIED by the time I get to the lesson material. Just two teen boys and me at home, but somehow I have fifteen times the housework. How does that happen???
And yes, weekends are for dates with the boyfriend. But a big part of me craves (needs) these creative moments.
Keep up the awesome job! 🙂 TTYL

What I learned was to identify the characters in each circle. I noticed that the three main characters want something. Ana wants to be famous, Todd wants to be recognized as a good lawyer and Vivian needs a good story because she wants to regain a good reputation as a journalist before the birth of her little girl. It’s obvious that they are related to the theme of the series: “Everyone wants something”.

Todd: a small lawyer stuck with little cases, married to a wealthy beautiful woman. He suffers from coming from a poor background so if he could win this case, he would become more self-confident in the eyes of his wife’s successful friends.
B. Connected Circle:

Neff, Ana’s only true friend, receptionist at the 12 George Hotel, the only one who visits her in prison.
Val: a fashion designer who loves Ana deeply. He had no love from his own mum and is attached to Nora (mother-son relationship)

Module 1 Lesson 3 Assignment 1
My Binge Worthy TV show is Mr. Robot.
What I learned:
I felt that I knew this show as I used to watch it. I saw so many different layers of the story. The characters are so distinct and yet I know that there is so much more I want to know about them. I also saw how leaving what seems like a cliff hanger every episode is so important
Outline
1) Introduced to main character Elliot. We find out that he is an introverted vigilante hacker as he rats out a child pornographer
2) We see Elliot on subway going to work where he sees Mr. Robot for the first time. He is very paranoid and feels that he is being followed all the time. Elliot works for a computer security firm called All Safe. We meet an important character, Angela, who is his one real friend since childhood and Gideon his boss.
3) Elliot meets with his court ordered psychologist, Krista. We find out that Elliot is totally anti-establishment. He refers to the biggest conglomerate, E Corp as Evil Corp. He also really cares a lot about Krista
4) E Corp introduced into story. In the conference room we meet CEO, Terry Colby and a mysterious executive, Tyrel Wellick, who seems very interested in Elliot.
5) See Elliot in his apartment sitting in the corner crying hysterically. He then crushes up and snorts morphine. His dealer, Shayla, comes in and they take moly and end up fucking.
6) Elliot follows Krista and her date Michael. He sees men in black watching him and then he sees Mr. Robot the guy from the subway for a second time. Elliot follows Michael and asks to use his phone to call his mom. This allows Elliot to clone Michaels phone
7) Elliot gets call from Angela. She is panicking because there has been a massive hack of E Corps computer system. She knows that Elliot is the only person that can fix this situation.
8) Elliot and Gideon fly on a private jet to Texas, where there is a server farm. Eliot fixes the problem but he has been left a secret message from the hacker called F Society. The request is for Elliot to leave the backdoor that has been established active. Elliot decides to leave the backdoor available but makes sure it can only be accessed by him.
9) Mr. Robot takes Elliot to an abandoned arcade in Coney Island. This is the headquarters of F-Society. There are a few new characters (young hackers) but there is no info about them. Mr. Robot tells Elliot that he needs to help F-Society frame the hack of E Corp on its CEO Terry Colby
10) Elliot takes subway from Coney Island wondering the whole time if Mr. Robot and F-Society are real or a figment of his imagination
11) Elliot goes back to F-Society HQ and we are introduced to female hacker, Darlene. Mr. Robot takes Elliot on the Wonder Wheel Ferris wheel and while stopped at the top he pitches Elliot the big plan to hack E Corp with Elliot’s help. He says Elliot is the key to their success that he has to put the incriminating evidence into the hands of E Corp. The goal is still to bring down Evil Corp, starting with CEO Terry Colby by wiping out all the debt in the world especially all Student debt. Later that night Elliot checks on line and discovers that Angela owes almost $200,000 in student loans.
12) Big meeting with at All Safe with Terry Colby and E Corp to discuss progress and facts about the hack. It is Elliot’s intention to turn in all his info about the hack which would hurt Mr. Robot and F-Society. Angela starts to give the details and Terry Colby is very dismissive of her. Elliot jumps in to help her which leads to Colby asking for Angela to be sent out of the meeting. When this happens Elliot gets pissed off and swaps the envelope with the real facts to the envelope that will incriminate Terry Colby.
13) Elliot confronts Michael on the street and tells him that he knows all of his dirty secrets and that if he doesn’t want his wife to hear about them he must break up with Krista. He must also tell her the truth about the fact that he is a married, lying, and cheating skumbag. Lastly he tells Michael he needs something in payment so he takes Michaels dog, Flipper.
14) While making up with Angela at All Safe, they notice everybody in the office staring at the TV. Elliot and Angela turn to see Terry Colby, CEO of ECorp being arrested and taken into custody.
15) Elliot is all smiles as he walks around Times Square seeing all the feeds sending info and video of the Colby Arrest. Out of nowhere, two men in black force him into a black SUV.
16) The men take Elliot out of the SUV and lead him into a high rise building in Manhattan. We see him walking into a boardroom. He realizes that it is ECorp’s boardroom when he sees Tyrel Wellick, the mysterious executive that he had met earlier at All Safe
Big Picture Hooks
Will Eliot with the help of Mr. Robot and F-Society take down Ecorp or will they end up in prison
Amazing and Intriguing Characters
1) Elliot is obviously the main character. Right from the beginning you can tell that he is very unique and troubled person. Really can’t tell what he will do from moment to moment.
2) Mr. Robot is the leader of F-Society. We don’t really know anything about his origin and if he is really trying to help Elliot or to mess him up.
3) Angela is a by the book worker and Elliot’s oldest and best friend. During the Pilot she is very one level but you can tell that there is a lot more there
4) Tyrel Welliver is an executive with Ecorp. The first time he comes into the story you can tell that he will be a very important character which is solidified when his are the last words of the Pilot “ Bon Suir, Elliot”
Empathy/Distress
1) I have empathy right from the beginning of the Pilot for Elliot as he obviously has mental issues and really has trouble getting by in the world that he lives in. You can’t tell if what he is seeing and saying is real or imagined
2) You can tell that Angela wants more control at AllSafe and to be successful in her career. There is a lot going on with her that I want to know about. The empathy and distress in the pilot comes from her getting kicked off the Ecorp account and the frustration from trying to deal with Elliot’s issues
3) From the first time Mr.Robot is introduced I want to know more about him. What is his real history. Is he really doing good or bad for mankind Is he just using Elliot or does he really have good intention
4) I don’t really know much about Tyrel Welliver other then he seems to be the man in charge now that Colby is out of the picture. He is a very charismatic and knows that Elliot is special
Layers and Open Loops
1) What is going to happen to Elliot in the Ecorp Board room. What is going to happen to Elliot in general and how much of what he is doing and saying is real
2) Will Elliot continue helping Ecorp or will he take them down
3) When is Angela going to step up to herb potential
Inviting Obsession
1) Will Elliot continue to work for F-Society or go against them
2) What is Tyrel Welliver up to
3) Will Angela get with Eliot, even with his emotional issues
