SUBJECT: Mark Napier’s ACT 4 First Scenes

What did I learn? I am learning to apply the dilemma , turning point and other contributing factors to lay out consistent reactions in each theme event. It’s a good checklist.

    ACT 4:

BEAT SHEET: ACT 4 REACTION TO THIRD ACT TURNING POINT:

SLUG: INT–LA QUINTA HOTEL ROOM, FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA–NIGHT

Mark is into his 4th year on the streets and starts to turn to crystal meth (Tina) to help him escape the reality he is in after becoming a complete failure in life and no hope of rebounding.

    ————————————————-

    ACT 4:

OUTLINE: ACT 4 REACTION TO THIRD ACT TURNING POINT:

SLUG: INT–LA QUINTA HOTEL ROOM, FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA–NIGHT

BEGINNING: Mark has tried to commit suicide twice, but each time it seems devine intervention throws a distraction to give him hope to hold on. He is often reminded of Tony Bennet’s song…”Who can I turn to? (When nobody needs me)” and unknowingly looks to his dog for emotional support, but his strong desire to take his life is overwhelming.

MIDDLE: Christmas eve is no different from any other day on the streets, but Mark is treating his dog to a hotel room for the first time in years as her gift and watches her reaction as she runs around the room extremely filled with joy and happiness to stretch her legs. Mark immediately breaks down and cries knowing he has not just been a complete failure in life, but he has dragged his little girl down with him to Hell with him. He had been scheduled earlier to strip dance tonight, but a water main pipe ruptures and shuts down the bar destroying all hopes of making extra funds to pay for one more night’s stay.

END: In a final act of desperation the next day, Mark seeks to find a client that will not just furnish cash for his services, but crystal meth to assist him in masking the ordeal. Mark estimates 30% of the strip dancers during the Great Recession are homeless and has known three personally to have committed suicide and countless others that are on drugs to include himself. This is the level Mark has sunk to.

    ACT 4:

BEAT SHEET: PROTAGONIST FACES THEIR DILEMMA:

SLUG: INT–CLIENT’S HOME, FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA–NIGHT

Mark’s carelessness in using drugs endangers his little dog resulting in distraught and a move for change of environment.

    ————————————————-

    ACT 4:

SLUG: INT–CLIENT’S HOME, FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA–NIGHT

    OUTLINE: PROTAGONIST FACES THEIR DILEMMA:

BEGINNING: Mark finds a client to visit where Tina is smoked and slammed. Mark later finds that his dog has accidentally been exposed from the smoke and begins panicking from the withdrawal hours later. Mark leaves the client’s home.

MIDDLE: Mark is heartbroken to see his carelessness has affected his little girl and feels the best decision is to give her up to a good home, then take his life. He has the plan laid out in his mind to go to the site in Miami’s Biscayne Bay where he laid in the bay the flowers from both parents’ caskets. He intends to wade into deep water and “slam” crystal meth into his arm’s vein and drown peacefully. However, his thoughts are on his little girl.

END: Mark is desperate to see his dog not suffer any longer, then it hits him. Mark makes a decision to break free of his current environment instead and transition to Colorado to live off the land and try to make a new start there. Mark lives for his little girl’s deserved happiness, wellbeing and long life and she ‘is’ his driving force for hope. She is 4 years old at this point.

LESSON 21: ACT 4 begins: key scene1: reaction to lowest point AND key scene 2: Robert Amador’s dilemma:

***what i learned from this assignment is that i’m coming up against a wall; i’m not sure of my climax but i’m “getting” how to tie key scenes together. i’m fearing becoming repetitive with my plot points but i know once a do a run-through draft with the following outline, i will be more clear and add more excitement and can make my script a page-turner.

INT. QUANTUM COMPUTING FACILITY – DAY

BEGINING: ROBERT SEES SARAH WEARING HAZMAT SUIT. HE’S PISSED. He knows now that she’s been secretly working with Rosinski all along. He learns it was all for profit her motivation; she’s been seduced by rosinski. Sarah tells him they have a job to do and that they didn’t really have a choice.

MIDDLE: ROSINSKI is leading meeting on how they’re going to proceed. Robert is angry, attempts to talk to sense into Sarah. They have to figure a way out. At east she’ll walk out of this a wealthy woman instead of living off an adjunct professor’s salary trying to make ends meet.

END: ROBERT INSISTS THAT SARAH NOT SELL OUT! ‘this is a lost cause.’

***robert aslo realizes again that his calculations are wrong again! they’re going to lose their las opportunity to launch “the crystal” into the Webb’s orbit.

***Robert “plays” along but will risk life and reputation to do what’s right: he will go seek out Portman and his daughter.

    key scene 2: dilemma

INT. GENERAL PORTMAN’S HOME – DAY

BEGINNING; ROBERT’S EX-WIFE AND DAUGHTER ARE THERE; ROBERT INSISTS he’s right and needs the General to shut down Rosinski. The General says he’s powerless; Rosinski has all the power. His Ex-wife tells him to accept his defeat and make money for the sake of his daughter.

    ASSIGNMENT #21: ACT 4 BEGINS

What I learned doing this assignment was that in order to get to my ultimate dilemma I actually had to go back and add an element to ACT 3 that I had forgotten.

    1. Outline Key Scene 1 and 2.

    2. Write Key Scene 1: Reaction to 3rd Act Turning Point.

    3. Write Key Scene 2: Protagonist faces their Dilemma.

    4. Answer the question “What I learned doing this assignment is…?” and put it at the top of your work.

You’ll outline and write the first two Key Scenes today for Act 4. Here they are:

    • Key Scene 1: Reaction to 3rd Act Turning Point.

    • EXT. NIGHT Police Station

    • Climax/Ultimate expression of the conflict: Carla tells Harriet to leave her alone..

    • Beginning: Carla is walking and Harriet pops up. Carla is surprised to see her.

    • Middle: Carla doesn’t want Harriet around. Harriet is confused.

    • End: Carla tells Harriet to leave. It’s time to be serious.

    • Key Scene 2: Protagonist faces their Dilemma.

    INT. DAY Therapist Office

TE 9: Now therapy takes a different turn. The therapist and Mark turn on Carla. Will she be able to talk them out of having her committed?
“You want to have me committed? Where? Didn’t they shut all those places down?” “We’ll start with medication.” “No! No. I do not need to be medicated. I’m leaving. You can’t force this on me.” Theme moment:Carla points out all the harsh black and white art in the office and is like “this is me loving myself–leaving this office!”

    Therapist office:

Beginning: Let’s focus on you this time Carla. I hear you were arrested that’s not good. Acting out?

Middle: Mark tells the therapist about the imaginary friend and wonders if Carla needs serious treatment.

End: Carla must decide between Mark and Harriet and she picks Harriet and runs out of the office. Leaving a stunned Mark and a therapist who suggests she made need to be committed.

    Lesson 21

    Trish’s Act 3 (4) First Scenes

What I learned doing this assignment is that my outline was terribly insufficient. Definitely making things up as I go along, which is why I’m hesitant to write all the scenes at this stage.

    1. Outline Key Scene 1 and 2.

Key Scene 1: Reaction to Act 2B Turning Point

    INT. HALLWAY – WEDNESDAY NIGHT

Emma wonders what Richard meant. Was her mother not dead at all? Was it not cancer? She knew she shouldn’t have got involved! This wasn’t her problem to solve.

    They arrive at Emma’s room.

Emma says they need to stay in Lucas’s room b/c of Richard messing with her door. But Lucas says they may get locked in together. she asks about using tape on the inner lock. He says, this is more sophisticated than Watergate. They agree to meet downstairs at 8:00 and if one isn’t there, the other will check on them. And if they’re block locked in, the hotel phones still work, they think. Will talk tomorrow.

Key Scene 2: Protagonist Faces Their Dilemma

    EXT. LAKE PATH – DAY

Emma and Lucas walk and make a new plan.

They shouldn’t have confronted Richard, especially bluffing. Was he bluffing too?

What do they do now? Stop and let him win? Face the consequence of stopping him?

Lucas promises to help her investigate her mother’s death. Richard’s probably bluffing. They know he’s started lying to protect himself.

She tells him that if he hasn’t faced charges yet, he probably won’t. Maybe you could do something charitable in the guy’s name, to redeem his good name.

The retreat is over tomorrow. They know Richard hasn’t been violent yet, but he also can’t allow them to leave without coming to an understanding. Would he kill them?

Lucas says something with the word “remote” in it.

Emma remembers that she can access her work computer remotely, so if that website isn’t blocked, they’re free to research and contact people via email or IM. Her work computer restricts sites too, so don’t be too eager.

    2. Write Key Scene 1: Reaction to 3rd Act Turning Point.

    Will do later.

    3. Write Key Scene 2: Protagonist faces their Dilemma.

    Will do later.
