Lesson 22: Dr. Amador’s Key Scene 3: Climax – The Ultimate Expression of The Conflict.
**what i learned from this lesson was that even though i haven’t perfected my climax yet, I have a good place holder for now. I was actually pretty impressed with myself that I was able to use what I initially wrote for a climax in lesson 5 even though i had not really outlined the steps to how to get there. I will have to remember this in the future for other treatments; to go ahead and write all four acts as if I’ve already written them and then go back and to the outline. I will have to have a rough idea of “working beats” when i come up with another concept. I know everything will be re-written, but for now I’m happy with my amazing climax.
INT. SECRET GOV. FACILITY – DAY
BEGINNING: ROSINSKI AND SARAH REALIZE ROBERT HAS GONE MISSING. They put out a national manhunt to find the “traitor”; robert tells “nerds” in lab he’s gone to chile to use their facility. but its a lie.
EXT. GENERAL PORTMAN’S BACKYARD – DAY
BEGINNING: THE GENERAL, ATHENA, AND ROBERT set up their own quantum computational facility in the general’s backyard along with satellite robert noticed at the beginning of the film when the general said he like to watch soccer around the world; Robert, along with the help of his daughter have recruited fellow citizens, astronomy enthusiasts, and other scientists around the world to help him build his own super computer.
MIDDLE: ROBERT tricks investigators by using IP address from Chile, even though he’s working directly in their “backyard.” Robert is able to hack computer controlling satellite.
INTERCUT WITH:
INT. SECRET GOV. FACILITY – DAY
MIDDLE: SARAH AND ROSINSKI ARE LOSING CONTROL OF THEIR COMPUTERS AT THEIR FACILITIES. they know it must be robert hacking the mainframe computers!
intercut with:
EXT. GENERAL PORTMAN’S BACKYARD – DAY
END: ROBERT hacks into webb satellite; he gets the satellite to send message to the “crystal” circling nearby to re-launch its last rocket and enter into the Webb satellites orbit; once connected it starts flickering laser lights through the crystal. At first there is nothing, but THEN; LASER LIGHTS start flickering back from the center of our galaxy to the webb telescope! images are downloaded from outer space on roberts computer and he shares it with people all over the world: the extraterrestrials are communicating directly with the human race!
INTERCUT WITH:
INT. SECRET GOV. FACILITY – DAY
ENDING: CHAOS AT THE SECRET GOVERNMENT FACILITY: nerds tell rosinski and sarah to race into communications office:
ON TV:
TIMES SQUARE, PICCADILLY CIRCUS, BILLBOARDS IN ASIAN CITIES: “WE THANK YOU AND YOUR LEADER ROBERT AMADOR. HE IS OBVIOUSLY THE MOST INTELLIGENT OF YOUR SPECIES; BY NOW WE KNOW YOUR LANGUAGE HAS PROGRESSED TO A SUBJECT-VERB-OBJECT LANGUAGE FOR MOST OF HUMANITY. OUR COMPUTERS SEE THE PATTERN.
[intercut hear with billboards of different cities around the world]:

Robert is at white house receiving medal of honor for his discovery of intelligent life in outer space and for his valor.
His daughter jumps up into his arms and he hugs her!
cut to:
Robert parades through haydn planetarium in NYC: Students of different age—astronomers in training follow him around the planetarium, listening his lecture; he’s educating young minds for the future of humanity.
he looks up at the stars dangling from the ceiling once more. . .robert starts to tear up.

SUBJECT: Mark Napier’s ACT 4 CLIMAX
What did I learn? I am learning to apply the dilemma , turning point and other contributing factors to lay out consistent reactions in each theme event. It’s a good checklist. I was able to use it to create a realistic outcome that I would pursue. However, the “BREAKTHROUGH” came when I discovered the Protagonist was his own Antagonist as well …..that he must face….the enemy within.

OUTLINE: ACT 4 REACTION TO THIRD ACT TURNING POINT:
SLUG: INT–MARK’S APARTMENT BEDROOM, FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA–DAY
BEGINNING: Mark is off the streets and after a few years decides to run for US Congress 15 years from when he was Blacklisted with a platform for the ‘Discarded and Forgotten.’ Mark is the first in the US to qualify as a candidate using “In-Kind” contributions. Placing pressure on the CIA and US Congress for CIA reform, Mark uses his press releases and campaign message to target 90 members of Congress and 13 committees to push for further Whistleblower Protections.
MIDDLE: Mark reaches out to an independent reporter who has successfully sued the Agency to force it to release the reports on child porn incidents and their status of prosecution. The case Mark reported is not one of them, heavily suggesting the CIA blew off a federal judge. Mark eventually loses the race for Congress.
END: Mark in the meantime plans to surreptitiously (hiding the hand as he was trained) take vengeance on Reilly preferably using a ‘vertical impalement’ idea from the Crusades he read about as an effective way of sending a message to CIA leadership on accountability.

OUTLINE: PROTAGONIST FACES THEIR DILEMMA:
As Mark does some soul searching he realizes that Reilly was not the only one that should be held accountable. In a twist of irony Mark realizes that he himself played as much of a role in destroying his own life by not simply taking a firm stance in being assertive and confrontational in the first place. It was the enemy within that destroyed himself too. It seems once the illness that overcame him and the sudden disclosure of his diagnosis broke his spirit and that became a major distraction from taking civil action against Reilly and the CIA’s abuse of hiding behind “protection of sources and methods” to avoid accountability.
MIDDLE: Mark begins to fall back into depression and PTSD takes its toll. Someone once told Mark that they would like to think “God is in the trenches with you!” to which Mark replies..”Then God needs to call in more fire support, because I am getting my ass handed to me.”
END: Mark lives in poverty as a veteran and knows his ability to carry out his plan to seek vengeance against Reilly is not likely to happen. At this point Mark reaches a juncture in life and decides to take his own life, after all. A suicide letter he intends to leave behind simply states…”I did not hate what I did to survive, it was what I had to become to survive is what I hated.”
ACT 4:

OUTLINE: SCENE:
BEGINNING: Mark decides not to give in and after being hit by a freight truck, fortune smiles upon him to carry out a PSYOP campaign against the CIA, Congress and Reilly to restore his faith. Mark decides to call attention to his story of injustice by running major campaign ads in well known newspapers, commercials during the news hours, social media, website and radio in Washington, DC catching the CIA, Congress and Reilly off guard. Mark “CALL TO ACTION” for protests at the CIA and Reilly’s home also raises eyebrows of the Department of Justice who pulls Mark in for questioning (on behalf of the CIA), but the DOJ is on thin ice because of the media attention and press conferences Mark’s attorney holds.
MIDDLE: Mark learns his old behavioral ways and tactics will not work, so he applies his new strategy of going on the offensive and ripping off the CIA cloak to reveal publicly embarrass the Agency in a major ambush that leaves them scrambling. Timing is of the essence and Mark must have all “agents of influence” ready to launch and produce a ripple effect that spark media and public outcry, but most importantly, place members of the US House and Senate on the defensive during an election year for ignoring Mark’s pleas for help. Reilly, is outraged and tries to obtain an injunction for Mark to cease and desist, but the damage is done and finds himself and senior CIA officials to include the Director subpoenaed before Congress. The court of public opinion is just too much for Congress or the Agency to overlook.
END: Mark’s first strike and aggressive campaign approach stokes the fire in various elements of the media to his advantage. Public humiliation and embarrassment for the Agency, Congress and Reilly results in reforms for Whistleblowers protections and support for those who come forward to report wrongdoings within the US government, in addition to accountability checks and balances within CIA. Congress decides to revisit and hold hearings on the Kunduz Province, Afghanistan Massacre where nearly 3,000 Taliban prisoners of war were left in train box cars to die, during Reilly’s watch when he was in close and continuous communications with the Afghan Northern Alliance.

ASSIGNMENT #21: The Climax
What I learned during this lesson was to just go with the flow if you’re in it. I don’t think my climax is perfected yet, but I’m happy to have something down. And it actually came to me as the dialogue scene before I outlined it really…

Key Scene 3: Climax – The Ultimate Expression of The Conflict.

Beginning: Carla goes back to the beach to find Harriet. But Harriet does not return.

Middle: Carla is trying to avoid The Moms because she is embarrassed about her behavior. But the Moms corner her. And she tells them everything.

End: The Moms all admit to some form or alter ego or imaginary friend at some point in their lives. And that they wish they could have theirs back. They see Carla for who she is and not only accept but support her. Kumiko even has a real job proposal on the table.

Trish’s Act 3 (4) Climax
What I learned doing this assignment is that even little improvements day-by-day are still progress. It doesn’t have to be leaps and bounds every day to qualify.
1. Outline Key Scene 3.
INT. EMMA’S ROOM – NIGHT
Using the new internet access, they research keystroke logging but her access won’t let her b/c of her work computer’s software. She’s able to email her dad, whom she’s estranged from, and ask for help.
He emails her to set up account with “Wire” and he can call her on it. A few minutes later, they are all on a video call. Since it’s lesser know, it shouldn’t be blocked.
She gives the basic situation. He tells her she needs forensic imaging software and he sends a link to get it. That will enable them to copy Richard’s hard drive as evidence.
The dad says to look for a cell phone jammer that is preventing people from making calls. Richard uses the wilderness as an excuse. They need to disable it but preserve it as evidence, since it’s illegal. They need to split up and do both things at the same time and hide until the cops arrive.
Lucas says they should call the FBI, because they think Richard has an arrangement with the local cops. The dad can call them now.
EXT. HOTEL ROOF – NIGHT
Emma finds a way up to the roof. She finds the jammer. She grabs it and turns it off.
Montage of phones going nuts with saved text and calls coming through.
INT. RICHARD’S OFFICE – NIGHT
Lucas goes in when Richard leaves. Sam unlocks the door. Lucas copies the hard drive.
EXT. HOTEL ROOF – NIGHT
Richard confronts Emma on the roof. He has a gun. They exchange words at first. She tries to hide. He wants the jammer back, but she can’t let him destroy it.
Her phone is dinging with texts, but she can’t look at it now.
She tries to “talk him down”. She bluffs/hopes that the authorities are on their way. He’s done for.
He shoots at her. Then she tosses the jammer to him. He smashes it.
He wants her phone too. She throws it and he reads the texts. Dad says FBI is on their way.
Richard walks to the edge of the roof. Emma tries to stop him, but he jumps.
