Megan’s Act 4 Resolution
What I learned doing this assignment is…it’s possible to celebrate a finished script, even if it’s not perfect. At least now it exists, which is far more potential than it had a month ago!
Still loving the freedom that comes with losing perfectionism!
EXT. PARK DOWNTOWN D.C. — DAY
Months later. A press junket on a beautiful, sunny fall day. A packed crowd sits in chairs facing a makeshift platform. Media, paparazzi, and patriotic colors galore. Banners announcing the campaign slogan “True Equality for All.”
Nova Walker steps up onto the platform and crosses to the microphone to exuberant applause from a crowd of men and women.
NOVA
Good afternoon! Thank you for that. You’re so kind. I’m Nova Walker, and I know that for some time now, questions have been circling about my possible campaign for President, especially after the unexpected and tragic death of former President Bianca Harris. I’m here today to put an end to the speculation.
The crowd quiets.
NOVA
Today, I am officially announcing my intention to run for President.
The crowd erupts in cheers and applause. Nova holds up her hands.
NOVA
Before you get too excited, allow me to introduce my running mate. With her strong educational background in history and her passion for equality for all people, I am certain that this woman has exactly what it takes to keep us grounded in what made this country great to begin with. Please welcome Anna Fitzpatrick, my running mate for the vice presidency!
Dressed in a sharp suit, Anna steps onto the platform, waving confidently to the crowd. The crowd jumps to its feet, roaring its approval. Confetti cannons fire off. Nova takes Anna’s hand and raises it above their heads victoriously.
ANNA (V.O.)
I realize the fight is far from over. My father is still in the wind. We have a long way to go before true equality becomes a reality. But we’re finally taking a step in the right direction.
The camera pans to the front row where David stands, a BABY strapped to his chest in a sling. Luke stands on the chair beside his father, alternately waving to Anna and trying to catch the falling confetti.
ANNA (V.O.)
Population control was the first to go. And soon, other unjust laws will follow suit.
Anna steps off the platform and into the crowd, shaking the hands of both men and women, who all respond eagerly. She pauses to pose for pictures. Luke runs over to Anna and she sweeps him up in a hug.
ANNA (V.O.)
Hopefully by the time my sons Luke and Evan are old enough to attend college or choose a career, every last remnant of gender inequality will have disappeared. After all, why should life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness be limited by a random genetic selection of X’s or Y’s?
Grinning proudly, David and baby approach Anna and Luke. A camera flashes, capturing an image of the happy family. Perhaps, someday, the First Family?

Alice’s Act 4 Resolution
I noticed than even though I write one or two scenes, but I write much quickier and don’t ponder much. I also like my writing and it doesn’t seem to me bulk.

Kevin’s Act 4 Resolution
What I learned doing this assignment is that my resolution is very short but serves the purpose. I don’t know if I want to have a bows scene or not, but that would be one way to add to it.
<div>A moment freezes in time as another figure
swings around the spire, grabs the dart and lands on the platform next to
Batman.

Margaret’s Act 4 Resolution What I learned completing this assignment is I am not the same writer or person I was when I started this course. I have a confidence in my ability to get the work done that was unsteady before. I have been a victim of my resistance but no more. INT. police interview room – day
A POLICEWOMAN walks into the interview room with a file folder and sits down opposite Lake who fidgets nervously.
Policewoman
The desk officer says your interested in reporting a crime.
Lake
Thats right.
INT. Blake’s Studio – night
Blake
You fucking loser.
Lake struggles to get past.
Lake
Let me out.
Blake
If you go now don’t ever come back.
Lake tries to get past him. He pushes her.
She tries to flee.
He grabs her neck with his hands and wraps them around.
Lake
Let me go.
Blake
You’ll be alone for the rest of your life.
Lake
Let me go. You’re hurting me.
She hits him in the face and he releases his hands. She breaths heavy touching her throat.
She tries to get by.
He pushes her, blocking the door.
She pushes him back with almost super human strength.
Blake falls and hits his head.
Back to scene:
Lake
I think I killed my husband.
PolICEWOMAN
It says here he died in the fire.
Lake
He did. We had a fight. I pushed him and he fell.
PolicEWOMAN
Go on.
Lake
I was so angry. I left. And that’s the last time I ever saw him again.
Policewoman
Let me guess. You’ve become homeless.
Lake
I feel like you aren’t hearing me.
Policewoman
You want a roof over your head. I get it. You can’t imagine how many times this has been happening a day since the fires. People would rather go to jail than be on the street.
Lake
You’re telling me people are confessing to crimes to avoid homelessness?
POLICEWOMAN
That’s what I’m saying.
Lake
To murder?
POLICEWOMAN
No. Not usually murder. Was this your address before the fire?
Lake
Yes. That’s where we lived.
Lake
That’s a fancy neighborhood. Have you called your insurance company? Your policy should provide you with money for replacement housing for a full year, probably two, at least. Here is the name of a lawyer that has been helping people pro-bono with these issues. How is your mental health? Angry?
Lake
Maybe.
policewoman
Let me ask you some questions- do you consider yourself an angry person?
Lake
I would have, no. Not before the fire.
POLICEWOMAN
Do you think life is unfair?
Lake
Pretty much.
POLICEWOMAN
Do you think you are surrounded by idiots?
Lake raises her eyebrows.
Lake
I’m not sure how to answer that.
POLICEWOMAN
Is your anger excessive and disproportionate?
Lake
Definitely. Yes.
Policewoman
There’s this local Personal Development Coach that’s running free groups for fire victims. Here’s a schedule of drop in groups. I would especially recommend the Anger Management Group and the Five Stages of Grief.
Lake
I can just drop in?
Policewoman
That’s right. Let me ask you about work. Where were you working?
Lake
I worked at a marketing firm in San Rafael but afterwards…I couldn’t. I tried but I couldn’t go back.
POLICEWOMAN
And now?
Lake
I’ve been delivering food part time and I have an idea for a business.
Policewoman
Go to one of the groups and call your insurance company. Here’s my card if there’s anything else you want to tell me about that night…or anything.
Policewoman hands Lake a card.
POLICEWOMAN
And I can reach you at this number?
Lake
Yes, that’s my number.
EXT. police station parking lot – day
Lake gets into her car.
INT. parked car – day
Lake checks the time on her phone just as it rings. She answers.
Lake
Hello, Mitch.
Mitch
Hi Lake. Listen, I’ve been thinking. I know yesterday was weird but I’m worried about you. Do you have a place to stay?
Lake
I’m working on that right now.
Mitch
I was thinking you could stay here while you figure it out.
Lake takes a minute to answer.
Mitch
I’m not sure that’s such a good idea.
MITCH
I mean temporarily, until you land on your feet.
Lake
It’s a real nice offer but I’m going to have to say no.
Mitch
But where will you go?
Lake
I’m not sure, but I know I’ll figure it out. I really like you…
MITCH
I think I really like you too.
LAKE
I don’t know what’s gonna happen, but I do know if I move in with you – well let’s say I know how that story ends and it’s not good. I want to give us a real chance.
Mitch
You’re going to be OK?
Lake
I promise.
INT. parked car – day
Lake hangs up and looks down at the Policewoman’s card.
She puts the card into her handbag and dials a number on her cell phone.
Insurance agent
Hello, California Mutual, this is Cindy speaking. Can I help you?
Lake
Hi, this is Lake Turner, formerly, Logan, policy number ###.
INSURANCE AGENT
How can I help you?
Lake
California mutual insured our house. This property was destroyed in the Tubbs fire.
INSURANCE AGENT
I’m so sorry for your loss. Thank goodness you are OK.
Lake
My husband died October 9th in that fire.
Insurance agent
I’m so sorry.
Lake
I’ve been staying at a friend’s house. I couldn’t really decide what to do but I finally put the lot up for sale. I want to rent a place for a while while I figure out where I want to land.
INSURANCE AGENT
I understand, Mrs. Logan.
Lake
Mrs. Turner. Lake please.
INSURANCE AGENT
Lake, I’m authorized to write you a check for $20,000 today for replacement cost of clothing, personal items and furnishings while we process the claim for the lost structure.
Lake
Of course it isn’t lost. It burned down, but I know what you mean.
INSURANCE AGENT
I’m going to need a few pieces of paper before I can process that check…
INT. California Mutual – conference room – day
Lake signs a confirmation of receipt at the conference table. She hands the paperwork back to CINDY who shows her the check. She then placed the check in an envelope, seals it and hands to Lake.
INSURANCE AGENT
Good Luck.
INT. car – driving – day
Delivers food.
Lake gets a call and answers.
Landlord
Did you call about the Streamline?
Lake
I did. I’d like to come by now if possible.
EXT. ranch – day
There is a ranch house with a long driveway next to it that extends to a dirt track. The track ends at a silver Streamline trailer.
Mount St. Helena is visible in the distance.
Lake and Landlord ***describe landlord*** walk towards the trailer.
Blake shows up.
Landlord
My partner and I bought this trailer to do some traveling. We planned on going cross country. We completely remodeled the whole thing. James really did all the work. He was an artist. He died before we could use it. I can’t even make it through the door. With so many people losing their homes in the firestorms. Well, I couldn’t justify it sitting here empty.
Lake
I lost my husband in the fires.
The landlord hugs her extra tight. Lake is uncomfortable but gives him a small pat back.
Blake
You’ve got to be kidding me.
The Landlord opens the door and motions for Lake to enter.
INT. Streamline – day
Lake enters with Blake in tow.
The interior of the Streamline has been completely refurbished and is beautiful – totally custom.
Blake
It’s nothing like our house.
Lake
That’s why I like it.
Blake
We lived in Fountaingrove you fucking loser.
Lake
And yet it was never a home.
Blake
What’s wrong with you?
Lake
I’m not going to fight.
BLAKE
But you always do.
Lake
Not anymore.
Blake
You fucking bitch. You need me.
Lake
Let me be clear. I’m never going down that rabbit hole with you again.
Blake
You never loved me!
Lake
It’s nice here. I think I can be happy here while I look for my forever home.
The Landlord peeks his head through the door, careful not to enter.
Landlord
What do you think?
Lake
I’ll take it. How soon can I move in?
INT. Home furnishing store – day
Lake is pushing a flatbed cart down the isle of a large store.
She grabs two Adirondack chairs and a small table. She sees a fire pit and arranges her load so she can fit everything.
She starts pushing the flatbed. She grabs a couple of pillows.
Int. Secondhand store – day
Lake tries on a beautiful tailored suit.
Salesperson
It’s not the style anymore. It looks so good on you.
Lake buys it.
Takes Blake’s painting into the trailer.
Lake steals the sign from Oliver Court about home.

Tita’s Act IV Resolution
What I learned from this assignment:
After meticulously following the guidelines on the assignment templates for speedwriting a first draft of a script, I am amazed how this has not just been 23 cognitive, step by step “lessons” but a creative process. Who knew that forcing myself to follow assignments would free the creative flow, help past bits of story ideas to ‘fleshen,’ flow together, show up in the script. I thought I was just following instructions and allowing myself to write terribly… but reaching this assignment does what Hal promised – gave me a great feeling of accomplishment without judging quality – and also incredible gratitude that Hal/SU midwifed the play I needed to write (“play” because I will translate this script into a stage play, starting at the end, through Otis’ insane mind.) It remains to be seen if today I have birthed a stillborn fetus or a baby that, with care and feeding, can grow and strengthen. That’s to find out, starting tomorrow.
The process has been an overwhelming challenge because I chose a story I really care about and is not commercial. Forget 60-90 minutes a day! I love learning dramatic structure, but rarely can write even a short scene based on instructions. Those attempts usually end up flat. But given permission to write a script that is 80% or more dreadful, I made a commitment to myself to follow the assignments in this course even if that disrupted my work, family and personal life and sleep. I promised I would not reach the end of the course wishing I had finished and making excuses about why I couldn’t “but will someday.” I have wanting to turn the story in my mind into a dramatized story for years, trying on my own or signing up for weekly playwriting workshops, hating my work, giving up, tabling it, trying again, wondering why I keep needing to bring the story to life. To go woowoo, I feel as if Hutchinson and/or his biographer, Bernard Bailyn, are guiding, shaping what had been my messy hodgepodge of ideas before I could use SU/Hal assignments as a scaffolding.
SU Notes (So I have them in front of me while I write)”
The Hero has been forced through an incredible gauntlet. With that, the transformation has occurred. They have changed their life and the Old Ways are behind them. Now, the New Ways have become a natural part of their behavior. The final scene — the Resolution — is about showing us what their life is like after this change.
Your job is to wrap up the story and make sure it includes these main components:
A. The story conflict comes to an end. B. The characters are now in their “new normal.”C. The “New Ways” are showing up as part of their regular lives. D. Both Genre and Theme are represented in this scene.<div>
Original Beat Sheet Thoughts for Resolution
— Original thoughts from beat sheet for this scene: Resolution 9 The change has been made or tested. We now see the new status quo of the Hero.
SCENE A- Genl Gage and Brit Commissioner Robinson offerd H lots of goodies in England as they send him off on ship to tell King… he turns them down. Commissioner says when hes in London he’ll b glad to have them -and more;
SCENE B- H in England surrounded by Brit aristocrats, trying to groom him for his meeting with king. He refuses – tries to defend Americans… alone and surrounded by fops.
Question – end with him with King, trying to advocate for colonies, lighten harsh Port Act?
OUTLINE OF ACT IV Resolution
Beginning:
Cut fast to London. Elaborately dressed people are preparing Hutchinson for audience with king, reviewing what he should or not say if asked about turning down offers because that might sound arrogant or ungrateful, and not to tell king about the views he expressed in his letters. [Hutch – Bailyn p 290-292 – Baron, House of Commons, gov of different colony.Gives up baron, house of commons, gov of another colony]
Middle:
With the king. Close to verbatim of actual conversation.
End:
Hutchinson’s daughter, at first excited to hear about the audience with the king, comforts her father because he is longing to go back to his country home in Milton, loves the simplicity of the colony, Wants to return, hopes people will someday understand he aimed at his countrymens true interest. wishes people had listened to each other rather than blaming each other as enemies. His own people with each other. Settlers with Natives. Place at their simple temp residence in London… or maybe in fashionable restaurant with people commenting as they pass by. [NOTE: for details when I revise – Bailyn’s bio of H, p 290-292 etc]
First Draft Script for Act IV, Resolution
Beginning:
INT. LORD DARTMOUTH’S DRESSING ROOM- DAY
Elaborately dressed courtiers are preparing Hutchinson for audience with king. As they speak, one man servant goes through great challenges to dress Lord Dartmouth I ways that please him. He gestures which garments from a high pile he wants, then doesn’t like, wants a different one. Another man man servant keeps trying to add fancy stuff to Hutchinson’s suit and he politely pushes each attempt away – his light blue satin that he wore in the colonies on special occasions but that now, here in London seems plain -needs ruffles, scarves, lace, gold braid, etc. [NOTE: In future draft, find research on people Hutch wrote to from colonies and turn courtiers into specific named reps from House of Lords, House of Commoners]
COURTIER ONE
You have the protocol correct. You can go in as soon as Lord Dartmouth is ready. That gives us time to discuss another concern — what you will say to His Majesty, not how
HUTCHINSON
I’ll simply tell the truth. If I can remember anything afte twenty-eight days at sea.
[Courtiers shudder and squeal, gasp “No”… “Never to that with the king!”… “What??!!”]
Courtier One
The king may ask you why you have turned down our offer to make you a baron.
LORD DARTMOUTH
You must come up with a better response than you are so honored but you don’t have the financial resources. The king knows we can give you the financial resources if necessary.
HUTCHINSON
But my position would only give a title to my oldest son. I love all my children.
LORD DARTMOUTH
Don’t say anything like that. It would be rude.
COURTIER TWO
That was the first time we’d ever heard someone refuse an offer to join the nobility. And then turn down our offer to make sure you are elected to the House of Commoners.
LORD DARTMOUTH
You said you hope to return to the colonies. The king knows I assured you we could still get you appointed Governor of a more loyal colony as soon as there’s an opening.
COURTIER TWO
Or we can arrange one for you.
COURIER ONE
You’ve already rejected all our offers. And the king knows it.
[To others]
How can we make sure Governor Hutchinson doesn’t sound arrogant or ungrateful?
COURIER TWO
Or two unsophisticated to realize the value of our offers.
HUTCHINSON
If I accept any of your offers, I will confirm the lies they told about me. That I only support Parliament to get appointments and titles for myself and my friends and family.
LORD DARTMOUTH
Why do you care what the descendants of our poorhouses and jails say about you?
HUTCHINSON
I hope to return home someday. Home to America. When the problems have been resolved.
[Couriers look at each other, groaning, squirming]
COURIER TWO
Never say that to the King!
HUTCHINSON
Why not?
COURIER TWO
He might ask you why you want to – and what we could do to solve the problems.
HUTCHINSON
I have many suggestions. If someone had listened to me – I tried to explain why the colonies just want the same rights as British citizens here – maybe His Majesty could-
[All courtiers interrupt, gasping and reacting – “That’s the point!”… “Exactly!”… “That’s the problem!”]
COURTIER ONE
Promise us. You will not tell His Majesty about any of your ideas.
COURTIER TWO
If he thinks we didn’t follow-
LORD DARTMOUTH
[interrupting]
We didn’t think they were appropriate. You cannot rehash all your provincial solutions during your short time with His Majesty.
COURTIER TWO
Right. He will become extremely impatient with you. He can become quiet upset at the slightest irritation.
LORD DARTMOUTH
Any mention of all the many ways to solve the colonial problem will drive him, ah…
COURTIER ONE
-To turn against you.
COURTIER TWO
That’s why we’ve made all these offers to you – to protect you.
HUTCHINSON
From His Majesty??
LORD DARTMOUTH
Time to go in. Just say as little as possible. No specifics!
[They guide him up to a huge door, tap on it.]
Middle: 9Bailyn 358-359; king 275-278
INT. ELABORATE KING’S RECEPTION ROOM – DAY
Hutchinson and Lord Dartmouth stand
KING GEORGE III
Good day, Lord Dartmouth. Please wait in our private quarters. We will join you in a moment.
[He gestures to a door. Lord Dartmouth bows quickly and disappears through the door]
KING, Continued
Welcome home, Mr. Hutchinson. We wanted to speak to you as soon as you disembarked because you must know more about the colonies than anyone else… Lord Dartmouth here says you have written a detailed history of Massachusetts.
HUTCHINSON
Yes, Your Majesty. Not yet finished. We had some interruptions. But soon.
KING
I understand many of your writings were destroyed by those mobs. We have mobs too, but thankfully the walls of the palace keep the at a distance. Of course you had to ask us to send protection. You and your family could have been murdered – not just your home destroyed. Nothing could be more cruel then their betrayal of private correspondence. Publishing your letters. I understand you have suffered much abuse and injury on account of your service to us.
HUTCINSON
[Overwhelmed, kneels]
Thank you.
KING
I know most of the names of the men Dr. Franklin sent your letters for publication. But who is the John Adams? I have heard of one Mr. Adams, but who is this second one?
HUTCHINSON
[Back up]
A lawyer.
KING
Brother to the other?
HUTCHINSON
No, cousin.
KING
In such abuse as you met with, Mr. Hutchinson. I suppose there must have been personal malevolence against you as well as party rage?
HUTCHINSON
It has been my good fortune, Sir, to escape any charge against me in my private character. The attacks have been upon my public conduct… for such thins as my duty to Your Majesty required me to do and which you have been please to approve.
KING
I heard they threatened to pitch and feather you.
HUTCHINSON
Tar and feather, may it please Your Majesty. But I don’t remember that every I was threatened with that.
KING
What guard had you in all the turmoils?
HUTCHINSON
I depended, Sir, on the protection of Heaven. I had no other guard. I was not conscious of having done anything of which they could justly complain. If they discovered that I was afraid, that would encourage them to go on.
KING
After your home in Boston was attacked, it is true you live generally now in the countryside?
HUTCHINSON
Yes, seven or eight miles from the town. A pleasant situation. Most gentlemen from abroad say it has the finest prospect and views they ever saw.
KING
I’m glad for you. I am so glad to speak with you. Tell me, what is the state of Mr. John Hancock’s finances -truly the wealthiest man in your colony?
HUTCHINSON
He was when he inherited it from his uncle. But Samuel Adams seems intent on flattering Mr. Hancock to, what shall I say, “share” his funds with the radicals?
KING
What accounts for Sam Adams’ importance? He bankrupted his father’s brewery. What kind of position or salary is he intent on acquiring?
HUTCHINSON
No position or salary, Sir. Just control of the minds of the people.
KING
Oh, dear. Satan’s power. Can’t the clergy control him? I don’t understand how it is possible for upright clergymen, in the name of liberty or the public good to join with the people against the government, preach immorality and tolerate evil.
HUTCHINSON
They are, Sir, dependent on the people in their flocks. As you know, Congreational pastors and elders are elected by the people. And when the people are dissatisfied, they vote to throw them out.
HUTCHINSON
He professes his faith. As if the Lord chose him to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt.
KING
But many in the colonies of the South are Anglican. Are they united with your New England colonies or more loyal to us?
HUTCHINSON
The calls for liberty are just as strong. You have heard of Patrick Henry’s cry “Give me liberty or give me death?” So hypocritical – with two hundred thousand enslaved Africans.
KING
Well, we have taken a firm stand. We hope the Coercive Acts and our troops closing of the Port of Boston will encourage loyalty and caution in all the other colonies. Do the people realize there are certain consequences for ignoring the needs and wishes of the parent?… So? How did the people receive the news of Parliament’s recent measures? We felt it necessary to limit the range of action allowed to your town meetings, control who can be on juries.
HUTCHINSON
The people are extremely alarmed…
KING
That’s a step. I was particularly glad Parliament agreed we must appoint the members of your Council to the Governor, not let people elect them. Lord Dartmouth passed me your explanation about the original charter giving the people the right to vote on too many decisions. Are the new measures having a strong impact.
HUTCHINSON
The measures are extremely severe. They are causing much distress to the life of the town.
KING
Do you think they are unnecessarily severe?
HUTCHINSON
I cannot presume to judge. There is always a danger that the more harsh, the more anger.
KING
But if harsh enough, no one will dare flaunt our authority, right?
[Hutchinson starts to object but stops himself]
KING, Continued
We are blessed to have subjects like you. We were sure you would agree that the Coercive Acts and the Boston Port Bill are the only wise and effectual method to bring the colonies to a speeding submission. Enforce qualifications for vote for representatives in the assembly and the council, Finally, we will establish at least some government over the state of anachy in your province. Before that spreads. Now come – we have refreshments. And we – ah, I – I want to know so much about Massachusetts compared with the other provinces in New England. And who in your family has come with you to England. Why you do not grow wheat. How many Indians are still there – and why they were dying out…. Come – you must be exhausted. A little chat – I only have about two hours. Then I really recommend staying at home. We have provided find accommodations for you. Just rest for a few days to recover from the effects of your voyage. I, too can relax. We have subdued the French in Canada. And now you have reassured me that the dissatisfied men in the rest of our American provinces will soon realize they too must submit.
HUTCHINSON
I hope so, your Majesty. I actually do have some suggestions.
KING
Yes, I heard you have sent guidance to many members of Parliament. More than enough. You have done your best. Time now to enjoy the fruits of your labors.
[Hutchinson starts to speak, hesitates, and the King has already turned, is going through the door to his private quarters where we can see Lord Dartmouth and the other courtiers waiting.
Hutchinson stands motionless. The King looks back. Hutchinson flashes a smile and slight bow, quickly follows him into the private quarters.]
###
[NOTE: End of play? If not, I planned this ending… but I feel the play just ended without needing this and 20 percenters don’t have to figureout what works best –
Ending:
INT. FASIONABLE LONDON RESTAURANT- NIGHT (Unless that was the end of the play
Hutchinson’s daughter, at first excited to hear about the audience with the king, comforts her father because he is longing to go back to his country home in Milton, loves the simplicity of the colony, Wants to return, hopes people will someday understand he aimed at his countrymen’s true interest. wishes people had listened to each other rather than blaming each other as enemies. His own people with each other. Settlers with Natives. Tita Beal Anntares. Reason: I changed courtier 3 to Lord Dartmouth but didn't do that consistently so I wanted to be able to know what I'm re=reading if I re-read this

Chris Dorsey’s Act 4 Resolution
What I learned doing this assignment is that though I’m not happy with my Act 4 resolution, it’s okay for now.
INT. TELEVISION SET – DAY
Wilbert sits opposite a female TALK SHOW HOST.
TALK SHOW HOST
Good morning. We’re here this Wilbert McNutt whose video of him stopping a prison riot has gone viral. You’ve now become a spokesperson for those who suffer from mental health issues in the prison system. What do you want people to know?
WILBERT
I want people to know that the way the criminal justice system treats the mentally ill. The odds are stacked against this population. And where’s the treatment? It’s an unjust and unfair system. And the change begins with the courts and how they adjudicate cases where the defendant is mentally ill. It’s called the criminalization of mental health, where… These defendants can’t always defend themselves and usually can’t pay for good representation.
TALK SHOW HOST
A lot of single ladies out there want to know if you’re single. So, how about it? Are you single?
WILBERT
…
PLACEHOLDER: What changes have occurred at the prison.
EXT. PRISON GROOUNDS – DAY

INT. OFFICE – DAY

PLACEHOLDER: Wilbert returns to the prison to work.

Lonnie’s Act 4 Resolution
What I learned from this assignment: This is an historical fiction, so the resolution is not necessarily a good one, and is already mostly determined. I added a light touch to a tragic story, by putting a dream into one of the protagonist’s life which hopefully brings a sense of healing to those traumatized by the KSU shootings. Still have many placeholders, requiring some research.
(End of Act 4)
INT. SUBURBAN HOME – AKRON, OHIO – LATE NIGHT
Chuck and Jeffrey, both exhausted, sit on a sofa, sip coffee.
Chuck’s eyes are red from crying.
JEFFREY
You gonna be okay?
Chuck gets up slowly. Shakes head.
CHUCK
I guess time is my friend.
JEFFREY
Get some rest, man. This is tough stuff.
CHUCK
That campus will never be the same… I’ll never be the same.
JEFFREY
I’m a mess, and I wasn’t even there.
CHUCK
See ya in the morning.
Chuck goes to bed. Jeffrey lies down on the sofa, face up, cradles head in hands. Eyes wide open.
FLASHBACK:
EXT. CEMETERY – RURAL MIDDLETOWN, INDIANA – DAY
SUMMER BREEZE bends the eloquently tall maple trees. Over a hundred people stand over at a grave site where a casket, draped with the American flag, sits silently.
MARY SHELTON (45), red-eyed and weary, stands between her two sons, all with arms interlocked with each other. Jeffrey scruffy dark hair, athletic, and, brother DAVID (18) dishwater blond, shorter, scruffy beard, hangs on their mother.
Summer heat is sweltering.
LAST FEW GUNSHOTS FROM A 21-GUN SALUTE ECHO through the rural valley.
The American flag, neatly covering the casket, is diligently folded by members of all the armed services into a triangle then handed to Mary.
GUN SHOTS END. TAPS BEGIN.
The casket starts its slow descent into the dark crevice below. All present walk silently to their cars. Brief flashes of lightning, and DISTANT THUNDER now echo through the area.
LATER…
INT. BATHROOM – SHELTON’S MIDDLE CLASS HOME – DAY
Bathroom is steamed up. Young man’s SOBS come from behind shower curtain.
Jeffrey is hunched over in shower sobbing. Face in hands. Mumbles…

What kind of God would give you a dad, then take him away? You piece of shit!
The bathroom mirror drips with sweat.
JEFFREY
(screams)
What the hell is death? Why is there death for God-fucking sakes?

Yes, Jeff, I’m Allison.
Jeff looks at her, then Jeff Miller, then Bill Shroeder steps up from the back. Jeff turns and stares.

The four nod, smiling.
SANDY
You have revealed a lot.
BILL
You are very brave.
They nod.
SANDY
But now it’s time to let go..and complete the healing.
ALLISON
It was a challenging time, we know that. But, it’s over now, my friend.
JEFF MILLER
We’re good here, we’ve been good all along. We don’t want anymore suffering…it’s all in the past.
Jeffrey begins to smile as he turns and looks at all of them.
Allison, Bill, Sandy, and Jeff Miller all begin to walk away in four different directions… they evaporate into the woods.
Jeff sits on a fallen log. A beautiful mountain bluebird lands at his feet, he then hears footsteps behind him.
It’s his father, now appears as a 25-year old man.
JEFFREY
Dad…Dad…is that you?
Jeffrey jumps up and hugs his dad. They embrace briefly.
JEFFREY
I have so many things to tell you… I have some great kids…you will love them…I…

JEFFREY

JEFFREY’S DAD
I love you and always have, Jeff. I know I wasn’t always there for you when you were younger, but I’m here for you now.

Day 23 Finish Act 4
James’ Act 4 Resolution
What I learned doing this assignment is… my leads were meant for each other as she pours her heart and soul out during her podcast making him realize he most likely will not meet someone else of her talent possibly ever. Jessica’s words win him completely over as they become a couple knowing each one helped the other deal with their pasts. Now they embark on a future together with newfound love and spirit.
INT. JESSICA’S HOME – NIGHT
Jessica mopes into her apartment like a wanderer searching for hope.
She finds Tammy and Paul relieved she’s home.
TAMMY
Where have you been? Your show finished hours ago.
PAUL
You should’ve called. I was about to have sleepless nights.
JESSICA
Well, next time I skip recess, I’ll go straight to the principal’s office.
That gets a smirk from Tammy and Paul.
TAMMY
You’re lucky anyway.
JESSICA
Why?
RUFUS (O.S.)
Because I want to give you these personally this time.
Rufus emerges with a bouquet of flowers.
RUFUS
Your words were beautiful.
Jessica shines with delight at the gesture as he approaches her not fully giving of himself, hesitant.
JESSICA
Thank you for thinking of me.
RUFUS
It’s all I’ve been doing.
She takes hold of the bouquet from Rufus…
JESSICA
This is more than business I gather.
RUFUS
It’s whatever you want to call it.
She notices him uneasy.
JESSICA
You can relax.
A beat.
RUFUS
It must be my worry about surprises.
She puts the bouquet down, assuredly grabs his hands and looks directly into his eyes…
JESSICA
There will never be another star football player to ruin us.
A mountain of concern gets lifted off Rufus’ mind and shoulders.
His smile matches that of Jessica’s.
JESSICA
Your move.
Rufus leans in and has his first kiss with Jessica…
TAMMY
Ok. You guys need a room.
The kissers detach.
JESSICA
Thanks for helping me out, Tammy.
Off to the side is Paul who cries uncontrollably as he fans his face while catching his breath.
JESSICA
I made it count.
PAUL
(sobbing)
I know you did. I know. This is too much for me.
RUFUS
Let’s get some dinner.
TAMMY
You two have a good time.
Jessica and Rufus make their way out holding hands ready for the succeeding phase together.
