    Module 1, lesson 3 Assignment 1

What I learned doing this assignment is that the main character (Ned Stark) is very nuanced, and we’re given hints at his character, all while his world is shifted, or turned upside down, depending on how it’s viewed.

    Example show: Game of Thrones

    Ned Stark.

1: His role in this show is one of the many main characters in GoT, he is Lord of Winterfell. A major player in the Seven Kingdoms.

2: Being an old friend of the King, he’s well suited to be the “Kings Hand”, his expertise is in leading men, and running a castle. He brings discipline, a depth of knowledge that is quite useful in his new role.

3: Intrigue – King’s landing is a dangerous place. Intrigues are around every corner in the castle, from the Queen and her brother to the aspirations of anyone in line to succeed the King. Ned must step carefully, to prevent his family from being harmed by the many plots unfolding around them.

4: Moral Issue – I haven’t picked up Ned’s moral issue. I figure in future episodes he’ll be pressed to choose between his family and their safety, and the role he has for his King.

5: Unpredictable – On one hand I figure I know what Stark will do, but he has thus subtext about how he’s fed up with the way the kingdom is being run.

6: Empathy – The audience sides with Ned, due to his actions around his own family. This shows he cares deeply about family, even when that comes into conflict with his duty to uphold his oath to the King.

    Module One – Lesson 3 – Assignment 2

What I learned in this assignment is that my characters need more layers, and a lot more thought, even though I’ve written them in two books.

My series – The Furies (or a title to be determined later)

1: The Journey of this show. A serial killer strikes a small west coast town. When the serial killer kills Dan’s niece, he’s taken into a world where ancient gods and goddesses still exist, which up-ends his atheist mindset. The serial killer is possessed by an ancient evil, a demon, known as Sorath, who is literally Mister 666 himself.

    2. Main Characters:

Dan Lanahan – Detective in the small town.

Megaera – One of the Furies

    A: Role in the show.

Dan is the main male character in the show. A cop, with experience in Dallas. His niece is murdered, followed by the murder of a fellow cop.

Megaera – A Fury, one of three. Thankfully only three. She and her sisters propel the show forward by looking to avenge the murder of Dan’s niece, since she can’t move on while her killer has escaped justice.

    B:Unique Purpose/Expertise

Dan – as a cop, he investigates the murders. He’s tracking down the serial killer when the killer is intercepted by the Furies, literally unleashing Hell.

Megaera – as a goddess, she possesses magic powers, and can go through space and time. She also falls in love with Dan (Plot “B”). She goes after Dan like he was a target. He stands no chance against her.

    C: Intrigue

Dan – He has a backstory of being a cop in Dallas, whose wife was an alcoholic, and she caused an accident, killing their unborn baby and an innocent bystander in Dallas. After the murder of his mother, Dan rejects all beliefs in greater powers.

Megaera – She has a soft spot for this intriguing mortal man, but how is she going to deal with Dan when he finds out his niece’s ghost is currently with the Furies.

    D: Moral Issue

Dan – will he stand by as the Furies exact revenge for murders? What can he do to stop them, even if he might not want to stop them?

Megaera – Goddesses shouldn’t “dally” with mortal men. Also, why did Dan spot her initially?

    E: Unpredictable

Dan – He’s pretty predictable at first, resistant to Megaera’s advances, but as he’s shown who she is, he denies the evidence, preferring to think he’s been drugged.

Megaera – True to her name, which means “Jealous Rage”, Megaera tends to lose her temper and cause damage. She is also quick to commit murder, but contains it to people who “deserve” her attention. She’s spontaneous. If she feels it, she does it.

    F: Empathetic

Dan – Dan isn’t really living until he encounters Megaera. She pulls him out and his life takes a sudden turn. Are Gods actually REAL? Yes, they are. And boy, are there a lot of them.

Megaera – we will empathize with Megaera as she enacts vengeance on people who’ve murdered their own family and have escaped justice. Especially when it’s a murdered child.

    Lesson 3

What I learned from this assignment: I learned that the deeper, more complex characters make the more interesting characters. We want to see their weaknesses and their strengths and how they overcome those traits that hold them back.

    Assignment 1

    Show: Mr. Robot

    Main Character: Elliot

    A. Role in the show: MC is a computer security technician during the day and a brilliant computer hacker at night. His role plays the pivotal role in destroying a mega corporation that had a part in killing his father.

    B. Unique Purpose/Expertise: Elliot is a brilliant hacker who has never been caught. There is no one he cannot reach.

    C. Intrigue: No one knows of Elliot’s secret life as a hacker, except Mr. Robot, another hacker. His best friend, boss, and arch rival are watching him, but have no idea of what he does behind the scenes. Other intrigue flows around those he targets for hurting others, such as Ollie’s infidelity to his best friend, Angela. The main intrigue deals with the plan to destroy Evil Corp.

    D. Moral Issue: Elliot crosses the line more than once. He targets drug dealers and dishonest people and has no problem destroying their lives if needs too. One of Mr. Robot’s plans may cost innocent lives and Elliot balks at this.

    E. Unpredictable: Each way Elliot deal with his enemies is different and causes a surprise. His recent decision to live the normal life is a big surprise and the fact that he asked Shayla, his drug supplier out as a girlfriend is even bigger for this anti-social individual.

    F. Empathetic: Elliot is an introvert suffering from depression, and social anxiety disorder. Although brilliant, he cannot relate to people is incredibly lonely.

    Assignment 2

In my story, Laura is a phycologist who specializes in PTSD. She works with military, police, EMS, Fire and other agencies to help first responders deal with the trauma they encounter. After seeing how sexual assault of children continues to hurt her best friend and other victims, and encounters PTSD suicides of first responders dealing with the same issue, she takes the law in her own hands.

If the government and the legal system will not deal with these preparators, she will. She goes from helping people to killing people.

The show has two main characters.

Laura is the PTSD councillor who turns into a vigilante determined to stop the worse sex offenders when the legal system doesn’t.

Janice is Laura’s best friend. Having been molested as a child, she still suffers from her trauma. She has become a police officer, bent on making those who harm children pay for their crimes through the law. When the vigilante strikes, she is tasks on finding and stopping the killings.

    Laura

    A. Role in the show: Laura starts a crusade to punish the worse child abusers who have escaped real justice because of loopholes in the law.

    B. Unique Purpose/Expertise: To better treat those suffering from PTSD, she has trained with first responders and has learned tactic skills that help her hunt and kill child abusers.

    C. Intrigue: Every time Laura strikes, there is a chance of her being caught or killed by either the criminals she hunts or the police who are hunting her.

    D. Moral Issue: Laura is killing people. She has become judge, jury, and executioner. She has also lied to her best friend.

    E. Unpredictable: Laura doesn’t just hunt one person but criss-crosses the country killing offenders. She does it in different manners so not to create a MO that the police can track.

    F. Empathetic: She has seen too many victims of child abuse, both the victims and their families, as well as those first responders who have taken their lives because of what they had to deal with. She has had to give up her entire life and practice to try to bring attention to this issue. She has had to give up Janice.

    Janice

    A. Role in the show: Janice has been tasked with hunting down and stopping the vigilante.

    B. Unique Purpose/Expertise: Highly trained and because of her past, highly motivated. Janice has risen through the ranks to run the sexual crimes department.

    C. Intrigue: Janice is involved with a number of cases, but she determines that someone has been killing her suspects just before she’s ready to apprehend them.

    D. Moral issue: Janice has been assaulted as a child. She uses her position to chase child abusers. She stands fully with the law and does not cut corners.

    E. Unpredictable: Clues unearth all kinds of revelations. He can be hard as nails yet can feel deeply for victims as well as families.

    F. Empathetic: Janice still suffers from her childhood trauma. She can’t enter her own apartment without searching for assailants. Suffers from nightmares of her assault. So dedicated to seeing the guilty punished, that she has no life, nor relationship other than Laura.

    Module 1, Lesson 3, Assignment 1

    AG’s Engaging Main Characters

What I learned doing this: I recognized that Esty’s absent mother played a significant role throughout this story (and that mine did as well in my own story in ways I had not yet seen).

Esther Shapiro (Esty), the lead character in Unorthodox:

    • A. Role in the show: has been raised by her aunt and grandparents to become the obedient Hasidic wife and mother that Esty’s absent mother failed to be.

    • B. Unique Purpose / Expertise: Esty is trying to escape her coercively controlling Hasidic community, and she has secretly developed a musical talent.

    • C. Intrigue: What is secret beneath the surface?

Esty knows she is different from other girls, but we are not sure how. Her mother has secretly given her papers that prove she is entitled to German citizenship, and her shiksa piano teacher is helping her to secretly escape.

    • D. Moral Issue: What moral boundaries are they crossing? Esty is defying religious rules by secretly leaving her husband after he says he wants a divorce and when she realizes she may be pregnant.

    • E. Unpredictable: What will they do next? Esty goes to Berlin and tries to see her mother. She proves resourceful and is invited to audition for a music scholarship even though she is a novice piano player. She unexpectedly sings a Hasidic song powerfully.

    • F. Empathetic: Why do we care? Esty repeatedly questions authority and longs to be free like her new friends in Berlin. She learns that she was told lies about her mother, who loved her but was forced to surrender her as a baby in custody court. Her vulnerability, her eagerness to be free from religious rules, her powerful singing of a Hasidic song, and her refusal to return with her husband all reveal her strength of character.

MODULE ONE – DAY THREE – ASSIGNMENTS:

    Mike – Engaging Main Characters

What I learned doing this assignment as it pertains to lead characters – it is how their roles/ journeys and the story line are linked by the TV show’s over-arching theme. The ‘traits’ of each main character need to contribute to the protagonist’s journey: his maturation or decline as a person, while simultaneously adding to the plotline in a believable manner.

    ASSIGNMENT 1:

    A. Role in the show:

Peter: FBI agent who is Neil’s handler, he has a vested interest in seeing the program work. Neil: Art expert/thief who is working for the FBI in order to finish out his prison sentence.

    B. Unique Purpose / Expertise:

Neil: Expertise: Knows art, the art world and the thieves who operate in that world. || Purpose: To thwart the art thieves, to work off his remaining prison sentence as an FBI consultant/informant. Irony: Using an art thief and convicted felon to apprehend other art thieves. Peter: Expertise: Understands Neil as he studied him, pursued him and captured him. || Purpose: To be Neil’s mentor.

    C. Intrigue: What is secret beneath the surface?

Peter: He is using Neil’s art expertise and experience as a world-class thief to solve white-collar crimes, Additionally, he is using his badge, and (Neil) his informant, to apprehend white-collar criminals. Neil: He is an art thief who is hiding his affiliation with the FBI from various thieves and acquaintances in the art world.

    D. Moral Issue: What moral boundaries are they crossing?

Peter: Is it ethical to put Neil in harm’s way in order to apprehend thieves. Neil: By bending, breaking and ignoring Peter’s ‘rules’ as an FBI informant/consultant, will Neil’s extracurricular activities be found, will he be sent back to prison?

    E. Unpredictable: What will they do next?

Neil: With each case, he is tempted by the world-class jet-setting lifestyle. It is a temptation he must continually fight. Peter: Suspicious of Neil, Peter thinks the worst of him at every turn. Despite the dozens of cases that Neil solves for the FBI, Peter’s self-fulfilling prophecy chaffs Neil.

    F. Empathetic: Why do we care?

Neil: Given a second chance, Neil’s upbeat demeanor, innate charm, and mercurial behavior has the audience hoping (fingers crossed) that Neil doesn’t give into temptation and go back to that way of life. With each successful case, Neil learns what friendship means, what being part of something bigger and better than yourself entails. Peter: He has his reputation and career on the line for Neil and the program he is overseeing. Peter is in his own, heavy-handed way trying to ‘help’ Neil and show him there is a better life.

    2. Victoria: Reacts emotionally and like Caleb her desire to help ‘strays’ creates issues.

    3. Charles Stewart: He looks at life like a game of checkers, moves w/ the big picture in mind; doesn’t see the immediate costs.

    F. Empathetic: Why do we care?

    1. Caleb: Unasked for gifts and the burden that comes with them. He is fated to lead the forces of good against the evil set on enslaving all of mankind. He has a big heart, is both idealistic and a romantic. Who can’t get behind a person like that.

    2. Victoria: Beautiful, intelligent and tenderhearted. A young woman who lives her convictions, who won’t let peer pressure affect her.

    3. Charles: Sacrificed a life to watch over the Standfort family. Lonely and alone, he is nevertheless, totally committed to watching over and training Caleb and his brother.

What I learned from this assignment: Continually refocusing on the main characters — their expertise, secrets, and contradictions produces greater depth and intrigue in the story.

    Module 1, Lesson 3, Assignment 2

    AG’s Engaging Main Characters

    1. Tell us the journey of your show.

A lonely child, Anne, finds her best friend in Jesus. Although she is a bright student, she holds supernatural beliefs that she seldom talks about for fear of sounding arrogant. She marries Phil, a minister, who recognizes her recurring depression. He encourages her to join the women’s movement and to work on reforms for girls and women in public schools. She produces shows on women’s history and becomes a minister. She seeks supernatural answers to child sex abuse. Battered mothers teach her about discrimination against them in custody courts. She again seeks spiritual answers and becomes pastor of a largely West African congregation. After she and Phil retire they discover they no longer hold supernatural beliefs. They find this liberating.

    2. Who are the main characters that will sell your show?

We meet Anne as a young child who responds to an emotional altar call by accepting Jesus in a tent meeting. She grows up in a quiet, predictable fundamentalist home. At 19, Anne marries a Methodist seminarian, voluble and compassionate Phil. His energy sometimes overwhelms her. He has no idea how deeply Anne holds her supernatural beliefs. Phil struggles to understand why he cannot make her happy.

    3. Answer these questions for each of those characters.

    • A. Role in show:

Anne is the transformable character, but also a change agent.

Phil is a change agent and surprised to learn he is also a transformable character. While both inspire others, they are being changed at the core of their beliefs, which frees them both.

    • B. Unique Purpose / Expertise:

Anne asks prophetic questions. She believes that faith in God is her greatest gift and she feels called to help people grow. She also has a creative sense of humor and does clown ministry.

Phil is a critical thinker and tenacious problem-solver, which sometimes causes new problems. He is a skilled Bible scholar and folk singer who composes worship songs. He recognizes similarities in Anne’s anger, despair, and self-loathing to that in Black kids — though Phil and Anne are white.

    • C. Intrigue: What is secret beneath the surface?

Anne is cheerful on the surface, but sometimes lonely, depressed, angry, and impatient.

Phil is resourceful and motivated to solve problems. People become dependent on his willingness to help, but then he resents their dependence.

    • D. Moral Issue: What moral boundaries are they crossing?

Anne believes the Holy Spirit is leading her when it may be her own sense of moral outrage over injustice. She tends to overload herself, becoming Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired and needs to HALT before she makes a serious mistake.

Phil sometimes “misses the mark” with his impressive intellect, drive, and skills. He dreams about shooting arrows into dangerous places for vulnerable children to retrieve.

    • E. Unpredictable: What will they do next?

Anne is fearless testifying against powerful judges who have put battered women and their children in danger. As pastor of a huge inner-city church, she demonstrates for affordable housing and immigrant rights

Phil has an enormous bandwidth and undertakes ambitious projects that leave them both exhausted.

    • F. Empathetic: Why do we care?

Anne and Phil both appear to be genuinely committed to people and social justice but naively short-sighted about the demands these make on them, their children, marriage, and others. We want them to survive and thrive, but their divine assignments may do them in.

    ASSIGNMENT 1:

Watch the next episode of your Example Show to see any places the lead characters might fit this model.

    Jon Snow, episode 3

    A. Role in the show: Nobleman-outcast seeking his place; appears to be thrown away; becomes a leader of the other outcasts with Tyrion mentoring
    B. Unique Purpose / Expertise: He’s a highly trained swordsman with a past that makes him empathetic to other outcasts
    C. Intrigue: What is secret beneath the surface? Ned Stark goes out of his way to hide Jon’s true parentage
    D. Moral Issue: What moral boundaries are they crossing? Not yet (he will have to go against his morals and feelings to end Daenerys’s moral corruption and misuse of power)
    E. Unpredictable: What will they do next? Angry that the Night’s Watch was not what he thought, he’s initially aggressive, but instead embraces the poor thieves he’s now partnered with in the Night’s Watch
    F. Empathetic: Why do we care? He’s been (supposedly) cast off by his family because he’s a bastard

Tell us the name and Engaging Profile answers for at least one character from your example show.

    Deadline: 24 hours

    ASSIGNMENT 2:

Tell us the journey of your show.

A young, well-educated village woman becomes sister to Golden City’s next heir when her courtesan mother marries the king. When King Abzar is assassinated, they go on the run. The Amir offers help and protection — if Charita agrees to serve as a spy in the Mughals’ vast empire.

    2. Who are the main characters that will sell your show?

    Charita — The Desired (18) Educated, independent, dancer, dangerously bold;

Veer — General, failed to stop the assassination of his King and friend, he’ll say he wants justice, but revenge is on his mind

Rajendra — was heir to the throne before King’s new wife had a son; now she and the baby are on the run and he’ll do whatever he has to in order to keep the throne

Bhadrabahu — second son from a conservative Hindu family, has reinvented himself as the ultimate playboy in Mughal court; knows everyone’s secrets, has a few of his own

    3. Answer these questions for each of those characters.

    Charita

    A. Role in the show: — She makes a deal to spy for the Mughal Amir. How far will she have to go to protect her infant brother, true heir to the throne?

    B. Unique Purpose / Expertise: — Well-educated village girl, who can dance and sing, perform poetry (early form of theatre). She can slip into different personas as needed.

    C. Intrigue: What is secret beneath the surface? — She can play the part of courtesan though she’s never been one like her mother. She has a secret relationship with Jagger.

    D. Moral Issue: What moral boundaries are they crossing? — Is she willing to seduce for the Mughals? Is she willing to kill for the Mughals? The answer is, “No” — but working undercover as a courtesan leaves those around her with expectations. And, her infant brother’s safety is at stake.

    E. Unpredictable: What will they do next?

At first, she’s scattered and even ashamed. As she gains confidence, she comes into her power. Is she starting to enjoy the risk-taking? By the end of season one, she’s got enough valuable info to start making demands of her employer.

    F. Empathetic: Why do we care?

Raised in a village, by her courtesan mother, she realizes she’s too smart for that life — but yet some aristocrats don’t accept her at court — and also, she’s a woman in a man’s world with a dangerous job, not of her choosing. The dead king’s cousin now claims her brother’s throne, but he targets her, blaming her for the fact that he got exiled.

    General Veer

    A. Role in the show: — He says he wants “justice,” in his heart, he wants revenge. He’s an outlaw now that King Abzar has been assassinated. He holds Rajendra responsible.

    B. Unique Purpose / Expertise: — Master fighter. Leader. Trained and led an army — many of whom abandoned their post, refusing to serve the usurper, to join him in exile.

    C. Intrigue: What is secret beneath the surface?

    D. Moral Issue: What moral boundaries are they crossing? — He’s moved from being the one who upholds the law to the leader of rogue renegades. Instead of protecting the king, he wants to kill the new one. He has to create a new moral compass.

    E. Unpredictable: What will they do next? — He was an honorable man. Will he abandon his honor in the name of revenge.

    F. Empathetic: Why do we care? — Veer takes the death of King Abzar personally. He knew Abzar took to many risks and he never trusted Rajendra or his father (though Abzar did). He’s haunted by the belief that he could have and should have prevented the assassination. Abzar was his friend.

    Rajendra

    A. Role in the show: — Usurper; was raised to be King Abzar’s successor, and then was undone by courtesans, one married the king and produced an heir.

    B. Unique Purpose / Expertise: — he was manipulated by his father, but also learned to be ruthless and enterprising from him; when his father tried sell him out, he successfully turned the tables; the student has become the master

    C. Intrigue: What is secret beneath the surface? — Everyone believes he is responsible for King Abzar’s death, he’s not and he doesn’t know who is.

    D. Moral Issue: What moral boundaries are they crossing? — Raised by a villain, crossing boundaries is a game; still, he does not want to be his father, he wants his own legacy

    E. Unpredictable: What will they do next? — He has the throne, but is it safe. To secure his reign, he has to prevent the true heir from coming back; he wants to find the infant and to break Charita’s ties with the Mughals. And who actually killed Abzar. Rajendra’s paranoia makes him unpredictable.

    F. Empathetic: Why do we care? — he was an abused child; as such, he tries to defend the children of the kingdom from like behavior

    Bhadrabahu

    A. Role in the show: — Charita’s mentor / liaison

    B. Unique Purpose / Expertise: — Manager of tawaif (courtesans), the ultimate playboy in Mughal court

    C. Intrigue: What is secret beneath the surface? — he’s the second son of a conservative, anti-Mughal family; he’s all fun on the outside, knows everyone’s secrets

    D. Moral Issue: What moral boundaries are they crossing? — in his mind, he’s amoral, boundaries are meant to be crossed; leading a double life

    E. Unpredictable: What will they do next? — He comes across as everyone’s friend; who’s side is he on? His own. Yet, he has some connections that are more important than others (Charita’s mother Vanhi, his own family — though they’ve publicly disowned him);

    F. Empathetic: Why do we care? — His father’s rejected him, but he still supports the family financially; will put himself on the line for Vanhi; helps the poor, disenfranchised

Module 2 – Lesson 3: Easy Way to Five Seasons – Assignment

    Mike – Five Seasons

What I learned is…. The importance of knowing the big picture, seeing where your show will be in five seasons. This process makes it possible. I tend to get lost; can’t see the forest for the trees.

    I. Brainstorm to find the arc of the entire journey, from Season One to Five.

Shangra La is the bigger mystery that could play out over five seasons? The origins of Shangra La, its inhabitants, its appeal, its dangers. Shangra La is the current reality, what layers could be beneath that could become future seasons? The dangerous factions within Shangra La: (1) Feeders, deciding to leave and go to earth to survive; (2) The Council of Elders, ruling class in Shangra La, have a hidden agenda which is to merge with earth and take over as the ruling class; (3) Splinter Beings, Danyak’s twisted creation. Beings that come from sink holes in Shangra La (places where the fabric of time and earth have merged) and are transported to earth by Danyak’s minions to collect human souls for Danyak.

*The huge transformation that happens over the five seasons = Earth, Shangra La and the Old South co-exist. The feuds, power struggles and back stabbing end as they have bound together and formed alliances in order to defeat the Necromancers, then the Splinter beings. ———————————————————————————–

II. Brainstorm the Stair Step version.

Possible Stair Steps: [#1] Bigger mystery [#2] Bigger conflict [#3] Bigger opponent [#4] Major layer exposed [#5] Exploring more dangerous ground [#6] Bigger arena for the fight

Season One = Caleb finds love, we are introduced to Shangra La, a parallel earth he visits. #1 & #2 & #5

Season Two = Necros arrive on earth, Feeders flee Shangra La, take over Wyo. #1 & #2 & #3

Season Three = Shangra La opens its borders (hidden agenda – make addicts of humans) #1 & #5 & #6

Season Four = Sink holes in Shangra La, places where the fabric of time & earth merge. Splinter beings come thru the portals: unstable, deadly. *They are Danyak’s creations!! #3 & #4 & #5

Season Five = The Old South (Annabelle & coven) new Capitol; she’s the President! #1 & #4

SEASON 1 START: Caleb is a student with psychic powers who finds himself leading a group of similarly-gifted individuals into a shadow war with supernatural foes.

    DEAN WINCHESTER:

    A. Role in the show: Co-lead with his brother Sam. The one dedicated to The Family Business, and their father. Ladies’ man and joker, with a soft widdle underbelly.

    B. Unique Purpose / Expertise: To find their father and continue the work. All the hunter skills.

    C. Intrigue: He’s secretly trying to drag Sam back into The Family Business permanently.

    D. Moral Issue: He’s very “shoot first, ask questions later”. And he is a complete asshole to women.

    E. Unpredictable: One minute he’s killing, the next he’s comforting a child.

    F. Empathetic: His brother, and now his father, abandoned him. He wants peace in the family. He never had a childhood. He just wants love.

    Tully’s
    Engaging Main Characters

    What I
learned doing this assignment is a lot of stuff about Tessa’s emotional journey
and her strengths and weaknesses as an ISFP raised by tyrants and hiding her
    own very privileged mindset.

    Journey: From
completely helpless without daddy’s money to somewhat stable. Emotionally, from completely aimless to
having at least one, admittedly petty, goal she’s going to cling to with full
stubbornness: stay in this job that she doesn’t like, because it pisses off her
family that she’s helping poor people.

The Characters That Will Sell The Show: Tessa, the lead, Ava, her sister of suspicious loyalty and primary link back to the family and that world, and Dana, her quasi-mentor at work and well meaning but somewhat chaotic sort of mother figure. Yes, I need to change some names LOL they all rhyme.

    TESSA:

    A. Role in the show: Former rich kid, as of right now, aimless stubborn streak, desperate to make ends meet.

    B. Unique Purpose / Expertise: Purpose: To adult. In all meanings of the word, including ones she doesn’t realize right now. Expertise: Quickly embraces new ideas. Charms people into following her enthusiasm. (Needs enthusiasm first.) Her ability to stay in the present moment and find joy in baking a bread, that makes her near unstoppable. Creative, flexible – BUT, her trauma has squashed that for now.

    C. Intrigue: What is secret beneath the surface? She IS a rich bitch. She’s been all over the world, she can watch the news like anyone, she’s on facebook she can talk to whoever she wants… she IGNORED the poor. She took advantage of the way you’re raised to think as a wealthy kid: that others are to blame for their own suffering. She DID that, and that’s why at 26, she’s fucking clueless as to how life works for anyone else. To qualify as something that will make other characters never look at her the same… it’d have to have been some real, dastardly ACTION that she took that she’s now pretending she would never take. Like… something HORRIBLE. Against a poor person.

    D. Moral Issue: What moral boundaries are they crossing? Well her own morals are murky… but going ahead even though she’s not sure is also murky? It’s more about her vague sense of “impropriety”, maybe? Or at least, in season one?

    E. Unpredictable: What will they do next? Maybe she still thinks the rules don’t apply to her. She might lie. She might make excuses. She might think she can charm her way out of rent.

    F. Empathetic: Why do we care? She gets joy out of new experiences, she has all these wonderful stories of stuff she’s done all over the planet, but she can’t afford them anymore and that’s bumming her way out. That’s the first arc, probably, to adjust downward financially and rediscover joy and adventure here. (Their favorite memories are spontaneous events – she can do that poor, too!) She really is trying. When you force her to see that she’s been wrong, she feels bad and she makes actual effort to correct the problem. So we’ll come back to her, week after week. We learn to trust her, we learn FROM her.

    AVA:

    A. Role in the show: Sister of Tessa, and primary connection back to her family and that old world.

    B. Unique Purpose / Expertise: To communicate between parties; even spy.

    C. Intrigue: What is secret beneath the surface? She’s way farther gone than Tessa thinks she is. It’s BECAUSE she still has emotions – she’s sacrificing them on the daily. She’s WORSE than a sociopath, she’s a flying monkey.

    D. Moral Issue: What moral boundaries are they crossing? Full on, nothing-else=to-call-it-but-BETRAYAL of Tessa will be hard for her. But she’ll do it. Maybe allowing her own small children to be pulled into all of this is her biggest stomach churn. Tessa’s done drugs before, she can wrap her head around Tessa no longer deserving any respect, but her kids are kids.

    E. Unpredictable: What will they do next? We only know her through Tessa, so whatever Tessa doesn’t expect, we won’t really either.

    F. Empathetic: Why do we care? She’s in survival mode. She really believes that she’s safest this way.

    DANA:

    A. Role in the show: Mentor at the job, mother figure for Tessa personally/emotionally. Also a force of chaos.

    B. Unique Purpose / Expertise: Purpose: To enjoy the absolute shit out of life. In a very messy home, 90% of the time. Expertise: How to appreciate forward movement of any kind. How to be a proud ADHD person, and by extension, how to be a proud Figure-It-Outer.

    C. Intrigue: What is secret beneath the surface? Hmmmm. I’m playing with the idea of her being like, a drug dealer on the side. I picture lots of random “on the side” stuff, and see D moral issue… I kind of think she doesn’t mind telling the difference between “random, whee!” and “this is actually a very bad idea”.

    D. Moral Issue: What moral boundaries are they crossing? She is messy in her personal life. It’s cool to accept that your kitchen will always smell, but she also accepts being an asshole. She doesn’t pay attention to things that DO matter, either.

    E. Unpredictable: What will they do next? Literally whatever grabs her fancy.

    F. Empathetic: Why do we care? She cares, about the people she’s decided to care about. She struggles with her ADHD, and has found ways to be happy anyway, which we all could learn from.
