WIM – BRIAN BULL – The Transformational Journey

    VISION!!!
My ultimate goal is to get my script from my hands to the television!!

“What I learned from doing this assignment is…
I learned from this exercise/process that by mapping out the ARC, INTERNAL JOURNEY, EXTERNAL JOURNEY, OLD WAY to the NEW WAYS is the simplest and easiest way to give your story purpose and a driving force. Every step of the way – from the opening scene to the end I now have a map to follow. I can easily build my story from this (the beginning) and I can easily go to that (the end) giving my audience a satisfying sense of progression.

The ONE THAT GOT AWAY – A Fisherman’s Tale

A fisherman is determined to catch the fish he blames for his younger brother’s death, however, in the end, it turns out the fisherman is the one who had gotten away.

    JOHN

John is the older brother/fisherman who’s determined to catch “the Fish” that he blames for his younger brother’s disappearance/death.

Unrelenting will and determination. Seeks revenge and justice.

    ARC BEGINNING: Simple minded fisherman.

ARC ENDING: He has what it takes to land the “BIG ONE!!!”

    INTERNAL JOURNEY:

Contemplative and reserved to hell-bent determination and rage.

    EXTERNAL JOURNEY:
Small time fisherman to being the fisherman who caught the biggest catfish in Louisiana that was responsible for his brother’s disappearance/death.

    OLD WAYS
    Going through the motions
No light at the end of the tunnel
    Living on a prayer
    Long history of failures

    NEW WAYS:

    Determined
    Stronger than ever
    Never give up
    Failure is not an option
The prize is for the taking
    Revenge is all that matters

My Vision: I am going to study, learn, and practice to hone my natural talents to become a master writer who creates works that people love and that make an impact on their lives. These works will be published, produced, distributed, and seen by a wide audience.

What I learned from doing this assignment is …?

My first stab at this was boring even to me. It was only a bit more specific than Arc Beginning – Zero; Arc Ending – Hero. Not much help for creating goals and subgoals. I kept drawing blanks until I decided to project some of my insecurities and desires on my protag. Then it started to take shape and I have some ideas about where to go next.

    Title: The Silicon Unconscious

    Genre: Sci-Fi Thriller

Concept: In a world where AI are advanced and common place, a cyber-psychiatrist treats cyber-psychoses that cause some machines to behave erratically. When she discovers that the individual neuroses are part of a larger plan to reverse the roles of master and slave, she must thwart their plan before it is complete.

Character Arc for your Protagonist: Sarah Talisman

    ORIGINAL VERSION –

Arc Beginning: A non-tenured university and researcher whose expertise is not valued.

Arc Ending: The only hope of avoiding a worldwide AI coup but who must remain anonymous.

    REVISED VERSION –

Arc Beginning: A non-tenured university and researcher who is afraid to let go of the things she loves to get grow and make her life better.

Arc Ending: The only hope of avoiding a worldwide AI coup but who must kill the one thing she has come to love and depend upon.

    ORIGINAL VERSION –

Internal Journey: Her self-worth is totally dependent on her recognition by others but at the end, her self-worth is dependent on her own assessment and confidence in herself

External Journey: She is a professor who cannot seem to get a break, but at the end, she is a cyber explorer who has uncovered and thwarted a plot that could have put all of humanity in chains.

    REVISED VERSION –

Internal Journey: She clings too tightly to the things that she loves out of fear that she can’t live without them but at the end, she has faith enough in herself to ‘kill her darlings’ for the greater good.

External Journey: She is a professor who is stuck and unappreciated, but at the end, she is a cyber explorer who has uncovered a global conspiracy and acts to save humanity from ruin.

    Old Ways:

    • Dedicated and highly skilled

    • Cautious and methodical

    • Desires to be unique and recognized

    • Must work within the system

    New Ways:

    • Skills switched from book knowledge to gut feelings

    • Risk taker

    • Desire to solve the problem at all costs

    • Is only constrained by internal code of ethics and right and wrong

    • This reply was modified 2 years ago by  Paul Schutte. Reason: I modified this based on the story subtext exercise in Lesson 4

Chris Confer’s Transformational Journey of Judge Ken

    VISION:

To write and sell excellent, original, enticing screenplays in order to take audiences on cinematic adventures that satisfy their need for great stories.

What I learned from doing this assignment is that these steps helped me solidify what my character wants and is doing from the beginning to end of the story.

Arc Beginning: Only willing to confiscate smart phones and sentence violators with rotary cell phones. (One week after jotting down ideas for this screenplay last August, a woman put her invention of a rotary cell phone on YouTube. https://youtu.be/PfdUudG6sms ).

Arc Ending: All in, kicking ass and taking names as a star chamber member.

External Journey: From Rotary Cell Phone sentences to star chamber punishment of criminals.

    Old Ways:

-Afraid to join Judge Jason’s star chamber

-Ignorant of the star chamber’s effectiveness

-Accepted the dominance of the “weak current system” (as these characters see it, it’s fiction, it should not be taken as non-fiction!).

    New Ways:

-Fight Kirill and Burlyman for the cause of cleaning up their hometown and avenging the loss of their family members.

-Courage over fear of losing job and status.

    -Counter the subversive Russians.

    Cassie’s Transformational Journey

My vision: I am a dynamic, respected, constantly learning and growing writer with an ever-growing and improving library of A-list quality, genre-diverse scripts that present genuine stories that audiences love to watch and that producers love to sell, and boy, do I make that MONEY, y’all!

What I learned from doing this assignment is…

The recorded lesson was a huge relief for me when Hal talked about getting stuck and burying yourself. Historically, I have been that writer and that person that rigidly followed step by step and if I got stuck on a step, I would just give up. I also wasn’t a big outline person: I just had an idea and one character and just jumped into watching them do random stuff that went nowhere. I have learned over the years how to structure a three-act movie plot and for me, writing out where the story starts and where it ends up has been such a huge relief and gift. I’m excited about applying this to the characters and looking at their journey to add depth and richness to my scripts 😀

    Haley Chambers’ Transformational Journey

Vision: I am going to work hard to be recognized as a successful screenwriter with many of my scripts made into films/TV shows.

High Concept: A recently hired dishwasher discovers the strip mall sandwich shop in which he works is actually the front of an underground factory for manufacturing dreams.

ARC BEGINNING: Unimaginative sandwich shop vendor who is frequently visited by his nightmares of childhood neglect.

INTERNAL JOURNEY: From repressing all imagination and expression as result of childhood neglect to overcoming his past trauma and gaining confidence in creativity.

EXTERNAL JOURNEY: From dispirited sandwich shop vendor to savior of a Dream Factory through battling nightmare corrupted administrators.

    OLD WAYS:

    – Mundane and unimaginative <div>

    – Low self-esteem

    – Hides from fears/nightmares

    – Static and held back in all aspects of life

    – Routined

    – Holding trauma from childhood neglect

    NEW WAYS:

    – Self-confident and capable</div>

    – Inspired and imaginative

    – Faces fears/nightmares head on.

    – Whimsical (while having a healthy balance with routine)

    – Able to overcome childhood trauma and learn from it

    – Unafraid to go after dreams.
