    Megan’s Character Profile Part 2

What I learned doing this assignment is…that it’s okay not to have all the answers right away. Details at this point are fluid and can be changed. But I’m definitely getting a better picture of my two main characters.

Role in the story: Anna Fitzgerald; protagonist; make-no-waves historian

Age range and Description: late 20s/early 30s; a fit, career- and family-focused individual who enjoys her uncomplicated life

Internal Journey: from a docile rule-follower to brave protector of the weak and mistreated

External Journey: from a mere recounter of history (historian) to someone who makes history (running for President under the slogan of “True Equality for All”)

Motivation: to save her second unborn son, to see her father Adam and twin brother Evan treated fairly

Wound: resentment toward her father for never explaining why her mother died

Mission/Agenda: Assassinating President Harris since she will never voluntarily step down (in her 5th term); keep her unborn second son from harm

Secret: First she must hide the fact that she is pregnant with her second son; then she has to hide the fact she’s working with First Man to take down the President

What makes them special? Her knowledge of history, and her understanding that history repeats itself; she will not make the same mistakes.

What draws us to this character? A woman in a position of power in her world but she remains humble and doesn’t abuse it

Traits: fiercely loyal, truth seeker, compassionate, full of self-doubt

Subtext: hides her connection to First Man and the fact that her second unborn child is male; changes the topic or plays up her pregnancy

    Flaw: indecision

    Values: family and equality

Irony: Anna lives a comfortable, uncomplicated life in a female-dominant society, but she is willing to complicate her own life if it means greater equality for everyone. As a historian, she is supposed to recount history; now she is making it. Hates public speaking but by the end is running for president.

What makes this the right character for this role? Having come from a family of men, and only having men in her household, she knows from experience how to think like a man while maintaining the heart of a woman, making her the ideal candidate to bridge the gap between genders.

Role in the story: President Bianca Harris; antagonist; a Change Agent: fifth term president not above breaking the rules to maintain her power

Age range and Description: late 50s/early 60s; a large, formidable woman with an iron will, a do-anything-necessary mentality; has two daughters; truly believe the decisions she makes are looking out for their best interests

Internal Journey: from a benevolent but shrewd leader to a heartless dictator, hell-bent on maintaining her control

External Journey: from an unchallenged, fifth term president to an assassination victim

Motivation: to create a world for her two daughters, where women have the rights they deserve

Wound: raped in college, but unable to prove and prosecute her rapist; she gave up that baby (abortion? adoption?)

Mission/Agenda: to maintain her presidency and the laws created to protect women; to eradicate the underground organization known as First Man

Secret: some of the programs she has enacted are not just focused on elevating women’s equality: they actively oppress men (estrogen vaccinations, one male child policy)

What makes them special? Extremely charismatic; her father was president before her

What draws us to this character? A woman who has achieved the perfect balance in life: a wonderful, loving mother and successful President of the United States. Able to make ice cold decisions for the country’s greater (female) good but still makes time to attend her daughters’ athletic events.

    Traits: charismatic, observant, shrewd, calculating

Subtext: uses practicality and the claim of equality to cover up an ends-justifies-the-means mentality

Flaw: oversecurity in her position; the belief that because she takes care of women, that they will take care of her

Values: power, maintaining appearances, her daughters, revenge?

Irony: a loving mother who is also a cunning political leader; can be a woman’s best friend, but if they cross her, their worst enemy

What makes this the right character for this role? Because her father was president before her, she knows how to play the political game. Growing up as part of the first family taught her charisma. Her resentment against men due to her wound makes her a dangerous male enemy in the White House. Her incredible love for her daughters drives her to make decisions that will create a better future for them— fair or not.

    Michelle’s Character Profile Part 2

From doing this assignment, I learned to explore more about who I want my protagonist and antagonist to be, why they do what they do, and how they need to grow through this process. For example, I hadn’t yet considered flaws or values in terms of my protagonist / hero.

Part 2 of the character Profile for your two lead characters:

    Protagonist:

What draws us to this character? Her inner strength, her desire to
heal through her trauma once she moves away from her mother, her ability
to process her trauma through writing poetry <div>

Traits: shy at first, learns to be more outgoing, insecure at
first, learns to be more confident, no self worth, learns to believe she
is a good person, no longer living by her mother’s narrative: that she is
useless, worthless, and will never amount to anything.

    <div>

Subtext: she suffers in silence until her father returns from overseas
with his new wife. While she never discusses the horrors of the sexual
abuse she suffered with her father, she starts writing poetry to deal with
it as she becomes a teenager.

Flaw: she becomes angry when she no longer believes she is useless.
She changes her name before high school, and translates her anger into her
    poems.

    Values: truth, honesty, privacy, education,

Irony: she is determined to keep her own abuse a secret, (always wears
long sleeve shirts to hide the knife scars) while advocating for children
who are recovering from childhood trauma.

What makes this the right character for this role? She is living
her life, speaking her truth, trying to help others while she continues to
    heal.

    <div>

    <div>

    Antagonist:

What draws us to this character? We don’t understand how she can
hate her own daughter (her behaviour leads us to believe she does) and
that this is acceptable to everyone around her </div>

Traits: Angry, controlling, abusive, condescending, critical, dismissive,

Subtext: she talks the big talk, delusions of grandeur, we wonder
if anyone really believes her… unemployed alcoholic living in trailer
park, tells people she is related to Queen Mary of Hungary

Flaw: pathological liar who believes her own delusions, malignant narcissist
who is incapable of looking after her own daughter.

Values: being the victim, yet being in control, instilling fear
Irony: she lives in a survivalist trailer park, claims that she is
a victim of circumstance, believes that she is a descendent of royalty

What makes her the right character for this role? She is a narcissist
who has no concern for her own daughter, in so far that her daughter’s
existence has no benefit to her; to the extent that she allows others to
abuse her as well / turns a blind eye to the abuse of others. Feels she
deserves pity from others as she has to take care of her daughter all
    alone.

    Amy’s Character Profile Part 2

What I learned doing this assignment is that it’s interesting that as I work out the character profile ideas come to me for the story beats. Also, I’m not going to do an antagonist profile just yet, because the antagonist is more of a ‘thing’ than a ‘who.’ If, while continuing to work, I discover that there is one particular antagonist, then I will go back and work out a profile.

Fill in Part 2 of the character Profile for your two lead characters.

    What draws us to this
character? Ellie is a young girl with big dreams. She’s uneducated and
mostly unskilled, but she knows what she wants, and she uses her wit and innate
    cleverness to get it.
    Traits: ambitious, funny, quick-witted,
    and resilient
    Subtext: afraid of failure, equally
    afraid of success
    Flaw: naïve and mostly
ignorant about the ways of the world she aspires to be a part of
    Values: hard-working, family
is very important (even her annoying little brother), true love
Irony: she believes in true love
but knows she will have to fake it to make it.
    What makes this the right
character for this role? Everyone else is where they belong on the social
ladder. And if they are not exactly in the right place, they are waging
war to get there. Ellie uses subtler means to climb the ladder and makes
it to the top without any bloodshed.

Karen Sinclair’s Character Profiles Part 1

What I learned doing this assignment is…?

    ‘The Devil’s in the Details’
The degree to which I felt a scatter-brained when I started this assignment is the degree to which I now feel more organized for having done it. This assignment was really a ‘roadmap’ to move the story along. I look forward to further unpacking my journey.

    Genre

Thriller: The Protagonist (Sadie) steps into a trap at the beginning (taken hostage running) and has no idea what she is up against; the Antagonist set this scheme in motion before the story began. Often, that Antagonist won’t be revealed until the midpoint of the script and can only be defeated by the Protagonist’s persistence and skill.

    Role in the Story (PROTAGONIST)

The protagonist of the story is Sadie Elaine Hillard, who goes by SE at work. SE is a Senior Executive at a high-powered New York City advertising agency. She is the only female at the firm who has achieved a level of success equal to her male counterparts which requires operating at 120% constantly.

Because of the energy Sadie puts into her job she has thus far been unlucky in love. She has resigned herself to being a single, successful Ad Executive in New York City.

Sadie has never had a relationship with her father. She watched her mother singlehandedly meet her need by forgoing an education and working multiple jobs. Sadie learned to rely only on herself.

At a company retreat in Whistler, BC, Sadie runs into Adam who turns her world upside down. Completely unprepared for love, she finds it staring at her from behind ski goggles atop one of the highest and most beautiful mountains in the world.

After several months of a long distance relationship, Adam asks Sadie to marry him and relocate to Vancouver, BC where he is father to two young children from a previous marriage. Sadie (SE) convinces her boss to give her an opportunity to set up and run a branch of HG Global in Vancouver. Should she be successful, she will earn what she considers the ultimate prize of Partnership.

    Age Range and Description

Sadie (SE) is 35 years of age. She goes by SE at work to discourage prejudice by gender in a male dominated industry. She is 5 feet 10 inches tall with a slim, athletic build and has dark brown hair that can easily be pulled into a ponytail when running and a tight bun at work. She wears dark rimmed progressive prescription glasses allowing her to see far away and close.

Internal Journey – A mind and emotions change.

Sadie is single, with no children and no pets, self-reliant, go-it-alone, and married to her job. Past relationships fizzled out due to her commitment to her job over all else. Having just married who she considers to be ‘The One’ she is nervous about her ability to nurture the relationship and worries he will leave her just like others have done. She learns how to be a loving wife and mother who is unconditionally in love with her family who love her back.

Sadie goes from a relationship based on fear of being abandoned to one of no fear, immersed in total reciprocal love and commitment.

External Journey – An action and experience change.

Sadie operates with a win-at-all-costs mentality which is great for the client but not so great for the team that surrounds her and supports her. With a goal of making the Vancouver branch successful and making partner, Sadie surrounds herself with the best and then proceeds to smother them and take all the team’s wins for herself. Over time she learns that to have it all, she needs to share herself, her skills and ultimately any successes with her team.

Sadie goes from a selfish, credit hogging executive to a proud ad agency ‘owner’ surrounded and supported by an amazing team.

    Motivation

Initially, Sadie’s want, and need is to be outstanding in her field. She is not going to have her mother’s life. And she has learned that the only person she can count on is herself. In a surprising encounter at a company retreat, Sadie meets Adam and in a very short period of time starts to believe that maybe she could be lucky in love. Or will she once again blow it?

    Wound

Sadie’s deep-seated wound is that her father abandoned her and her mother. For this reason, she is unable to trust men and as a result, all of her past relationships have failed. Will her new relationship with Adam suffer that same fate?

    Mission/Agenda

When Sadie meets and falls deeply in love with Adam she has to make a decision that he is worth the risk of relocating to Vancouver, BC to be with him (which is where his two children from a previous marriage live). The security blanket she takes with her is the opportunity to open and run a branch of her advertising agency in Vancouver, BC. If she lands the big account that everyone is vying for, she will become the first female partner in the history of the company.

    Secret

Sadie’s last long-term relationship did not end well. In an unusual turn of events, she ended it because her partner become emotionally dependent on her, and she felt smothered. He relied on her for his own happiness. The pressure was too much. Sadie needed someone who was confident, had interests separate and apart from hers and allowed her the freedom to be who she wanted and needed to be.

Unbeknownst to Adam, Sadie agreed with her ex that they could still be friends.

    What makes them special?

Sadie is a long-distance runner. Running is like her own personal clothesline where, if she is getting regular runs in every day her clothesline is taught and tight and other things in her life go well. If, for some reason, her clothesline is slack or worse yet, lying on the ground, everything else in her life starts to fall apart. Poor eating habits, interrupted sleep and a short fuse are just some of the symptoms. For these reasons, Sadie prioritizes running above many other things in her life. Running is her happy place. Rarely a day goes by where she doesn’t go for a run, be it five kilometers or 42 kilometers (a marathon).

    Role in the Story (ANTAGONIST)

The antagonist of the story is Thomas Kruger, Sadie’s previous boyfriend.

Thomas is a salesperson for a Technology company. He is great at making decisions for other people but not so great at making decisions for himself. Thomas’ climb in the world of technology sales somewhat mirrored Sadie’s success in advertising. Consistently beating last month’s sales quota was a lot to live up to. While this kind of pressure inspired Sadie, it immobilized Thomas. He saw Sadie’s success as a potential off-ramp for him. It was not beneath him to become a kept man.

Thomas met Sadie at a 10K charity run. He was quite a bit younger than Sadie but the age difference didn’t bother him at all.

Thomas’ relationship with Sadie morphed into an unhealthy dependency where he relied on her to satisfy all his needs. While he gave her the space she needed to do her job, in return, he demanded her full attention to his needs when she was home. Eventually, Thomas’ demands overwhelmed Sadie and she ended the relationship. He couldn’t figure out where he’d gone wrong. In his mind, he was doing all the giving.

Thomas tried to convince Sadie in to reconcile several times, but Sadie rejected this idea.

As a desperate attempt to hang on, Thomas worked to transform the relationship to a friendship so that over time, he could win her back. Sadie was ok with maintaining a friendship. She didn’t see Thomas that often anyway. What she didn’t know was that he was almost stalking her.

    Age Range and Description

Thomas is 28 years of age. He has blonde hair, green eyes, a slim build and stands six feet tall. He has a tattoo of his mother’s name on his arm.

    <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Internal Journey – A mind and emotions change.

Thomas goes from a relationship based on an unhealthy dependency to relationship based on desperation and ultimately revenge.

External Journey – An action and experience change.

Thomas goes from a decent salesperson to an unemployed salesperson in prison.

    Motivation

Thomas’ motivation is to get Sadie back or seek revenge on her for rejecting him.

    Wound

Thomas’ wound is that he simply cannot understand why he is being rejected. He only ever sees the world in terms of how it impacts him. He cannot see the other person’s perspective.

    Mission/Agenda

Thomas’ mission or agenda starts with a desire to get Sadie back. When he realizes that isn’t going to happen, his agenda becomes revenge. He wants to blow up Sadie’s job and her new life.

    Secret

Thomas’ secret is that he is tracking Sadie. He knows how she operates, how she likes to go for a run to get in state, and how she works with blinders on when she has an important project at work. Through his ongoing friendship with her and through his knowledge of technology, he is developing a plan to take her down.

    What makes them special?

Thomas is unique in that he simply cannot see the world from another person’s perspective. He is purely ‘transactional’ and has learned over time what he needs to say and do to get by in life. Everything he does is to get a desired reaction from the other person regardless of what might be going on in their world. He lives in an ‘if this, then that’ world which is part of why he gravitated to technology early on in life.

Donna Stockwell’s Character Profile Part 2
What I learned doing this assignment is People are complicated, and expect and enjoy complicated characters to empathisize, root for and throw tomatoes at (figuratively).
    PROTAGONIST
Role in the story: Protagonist, maid who is taking art classes
Age range and Description: 30’s, plus a very brief physical description combined with some kind of insight into who the character is.
Internal Journey: The character feels all this working in order to get art lesson has gone for naught as she turns 35, she feels her life is over… not married, except to her art, no prospects of selling art, just at a stale life despite her efforts.
External Journey: She has been working herself to her bones as a maid and bearing the wrath of the owner of the hotel for years. Her art teacher dies suddenly after telling her that she has no hope of ever being a “true artist” since she “does not feel enough”. The replacement teacher and classmates show up to her 35th party, and the teacher is very impressed by her work, and shows her the ropes of getting noticed and selling art at gallery showing.
    Motivation:
Their want (usually to achieve a goal) – to start selling her art, and not work as a maid
Their need ( a base internal state that is missing for them) — recognition, money, to stop inhaling the unhealthy cleaning products AND latex gloves that she is allergic to
Wound: Got this job as a favour from hotel owner to her godmother , since her (almost criminal?) past, and hotel owner reminds her of it, and that she doesn’t deserve to be her personal maid (ie should be grateful for it)
Mission/Agenda: Mission: A special assignment or objective a character takes on. Agenda: A plan; something being promoted. In both, you are looking for the character’s purpose that is usually covertly hidden.
Secret: She has only given herself until her 35th birthday to be successful in the art industry, at which time, she’ll just give up
What makes them special? she uses mixed media… stealing from the hotel to bring the unexpected to her art… including the hair from the hotel owner, which is the piece of the puzzle to make her an overwhelming over-night sensation.

What draws us to this character? Everyone has dreams of being extremely talented and recognized in an area that is very important to them. While the audience watches someone achieve their dreams, it gives hope to the audience of achieving their own dreams.
    Traits: ambitious, intelligent, humble
Subtext: answers politely to demands and instructions, but doesn’t enjoy taking verbal abuse and negativity
Flaw: she is not recognized in society or rich
Values: she is honest and respectful of others, takes pride in her work
Irony: she has to pretend she is well-known in order to be recognized in the art community
What makes this the right character for this role? she is a hard worker and creative, and sees things in a different perspective than the ordinary person.

    ANTAGONIST
Role in the story: antagonist -owner of hotel and lodger of penthouse, maid’s boss
Age range and Description: 60’s, well known in the art district, best friends with art gallery owner, makes trouble for maid whenever she can
Internal Journey: She belittles others so that she feels good about herself
External Journey: She tries to stop the maid from leaving, because she wants to keep her as the maid/control. Shocked that what propels her forward to achieve her goal is right under her nose (the maid), and starts treating her differently — tries to control her to her advantage. (Change control as maid to control as artist AND maid)
    Motivation:
Their want (achieve a goal) – become chair of the Art Board of Trustees
Their need – control of people, especially to do “menial” tasks (ie something she would never do, due to society status), keep social status
Wound: she is paranoid and superstitious, which lends to her OCD
    Mission/Agenda:
Mission: A special assignment or objective a character takes on.
Agenda: she is trying to become chair of the Art Board of Trustees
(purpose that is usually covertly hidden).
Secret: She tries to hide her OCD by being more demanding and aggressive.
What makes them special? She is very direct and demanding. She is a sociopath.
What draws us to this character? She is successful, and respected by others.
Traits: she is narcissistic, condescending, and controlling
Subtext: she is too ambitious and manipulates people to think that her thoughts are their own
Flaw: fear of failure, she uses others and their work in order to become more well-known and respected, she believes she is smarter than everyone she encounters
Values: she values money and societal recognition, and of course herself
Irony: she continually steps over the maid when it is the maid’s art that she needs to catapult herself into the position of Chair of the Art Board
What makes this the right character for this role? She is an artist herself and over-ambitious, and has had a lot of press coverage.

    Dave’s Part 2 Profile

What I learned….more about the characters, which has illuminated the trajectory of the story more. Also, the relationships between the characters keep evolving, first when I do the assignments, and then later when something comes to me that I hadn’t considered before.
At any rate, one thing I’ve learned from writing 26 screenplays and nine novels is that from a single idea, everything is already there. The exercises here are bringing some of those things out a little earlier than I’m used to.

    Cameron Chaney

WHAT DRAWS US TO THIS CHARACTER? He’s smart, but also wary of being caught “breaking the rules.” Underdog, because he’s just a film restorer who’s never had to deal with people trying to kill him. He’s also eyes-wide-open and trusting and not good at judging who’s trying to con him.

Traits: Trusting. Loyal. Innovative. Wants to succeed, but doesn’t know how.

Subtext: Eagerness to please, make everyone get along.

Flaw: Too nice. Tends to side with whatever side of an issue he’s hearing at the moment.

Values: To be thought of as cool. Innovation is good, but so is following the rules.

Irony: He disobeys the company’s rules about messing with the software because he thinks it can be better. When it gets him in trouble, he doesn’t know where to go for help. The more he knows about Reina, Sol Baxter, the gangsters and Morning in Paradise, the more at risk he is—but he needs to know more to get out of it. He still has empathy even though he got screwed out of money and acclaim for the app.

What makes him the right character for this role? He’s a tech nerd. He got screwed out of money and acclaim by people he thought were his friends.

    Reina Hawkins

What draws us to this character? She’s beautiful, but also naïve. She’s not afraid to tell her story the way she sees it. She seems as open and wide-eyed as Cameron—and he falls in love with her.

Traits: Straight-forward. Sweet. Seems to be honest.

Subtext: Hides behind her sweetness. Asks for help.

    Flaw: She’s not honest.

Values: Truth—her way. Midwestern girl caught up in Hollywood scene.

Irony: Midwestern girl caught up in Hollywood scene. She’s dead, but she also knows all the players and is best equipped to solve the mystery. She can get Cameron to fall in love with her, but she’s only a figment of a data profile.

What makes her the right character for this role? Sweet. Midwestern girl who got the bad end of a very raw deal.

    Leona Baxter

What draws us to this character? Beautiful. Worldly. The idea that maybe we all would like to inherit $100 million without having to wait another minute.

Traits: Kind of a sociopath. Manipulative. Desperate.

Subtext: Reacts harshly to anything she thinks is criticism—or that gets too close to the truth.

    Flaw: Greed.

Values: Power, money, the adoration of others she considers her peers even thought they’re not because they’ve earned their acclaim.

Irony: Wants the values without doing the work. Lives a pretty easy life, but wants all the money.

What makes her the right character for this role? Manipulative abilities cloak her dark side.

    PART 1

    Michael

    Wendy’s Character Profiles Part 2

What I learned doing this assignment is how my characters interact with each other and how they fall in love and the real thoughts behind why they do what they do.

    1) What draws us to this character? Michele: A total soccer mom in a dangerous world trying to take out a an entire mob and save her family. Dean: He is a truly nice guy underneath but will only let people see his hard shell he has created but he can’t help himself around Michele an his walls crumble.

    2) Traits: Michele: Bougie, fearless, a little vain. Dean: loves to have others fear him, he wears disguises all the time to complete tasks, but he is just hiding who he really is.

    3) Subtext: Michele: Determined to be the the person she once was, but fears that she is not good enough anymore. Definitely afraid her kids will not accept the new(old) person she really is inside. Dean: He was brought up respecting women the old Texas way, but with each relationship his heart hardened more with each rejection, but he is driven to find unconditional love.

    4) Flaws: Michele: Lacks faith in her capabilities. Dean: He actually cares deeply for others.

    5) Values: Michele: Family first and unconditional love. Dean: Honesty, integrity, and making sure the job is done right.

<font face=”inherit”>6) Irony: Michele: Wears dresses, </font>heels<font face=”inherit”>, and has the perfect hair and nails, but she can kill a person with her bare hands when needed. Dean: He needs unconditional love but his heart is guarded with walls like a fortress.</font>

<font face=”inherit”>7) What makes this the right character for this role? Michele: With the love for her kids she will go through hell to get then back and make the bad guys pay for what they have done. Tita Anntares’ Character Profile Part 2 for Lesson 3, 30-Day Course

What I learned doing this assignment: As I applied the 7 characteristics, my characters became so much richer and their personalities became integrated with the story. I find the definitions of some of the 7 Part 2 very helpful. Some I knew because of previous courses with SU and others…. But new definitions/connections for me –

Subtext: I never thought about creating a character’s way of expressing hidden meanings/purpose/goal in what they are saying – I usually thought of subtext as an aspect of dialog, e.g. what do they really want or fear that they are not saying? Vs How to they try to hide their real feelings or goals.

Irony: I previously thought of this as an action that contrasts with some other goal, value, belief, event, etc. Really like SU definition for character profiles – “Opposing parts of a person that cause internal or external conflict. Two opposite parts work together in a meaningful way.”
Right for Role: I never thought about why a type of character would be right for the role of hero, villain, authority, etc.

Character Profile/Protag Thomas Hutchinson – two parts brought together

    Part 1, revised/enhanced

Protagonist’s role: Hero. Royal Governor Thomas Hutchinson of the British colony of Massachusetts Bay is devoted to the Mother Country because England has the only nation in the world of nations ruled by kings, tyrants and dictators that is founded, since the Magna Carta, on rule by elected representatives in Parliament’s House of Lords and House of Commons gives both the wealthy and all others the right elect their own representatives and have a say in what impacts their lives… so he will crush the attempts of any mobs and their extremist leaders to undermine British laws and destroy the unity for their own selfish, raging reasons. Besides, it takes weeks or months to cross the Atlantic so representatives cannot be in England and inform their constituents about votes. Instead the system for appointing one colonial representative who virtually represents the American colonies is the only practical way to give colonists self-government.

Age range and Description: 50s, Widowed. Elegant.
Internal Journey: From arrogant assumption that only someone from his background from “good” family, wealth, education and government experience can govern the people that, after being smothered with attention by the much more wealthy powerful people of London, his story leads to his despairing realization that the people he saw only as unruly mobs had real concerns that he should have listened to and a true love of democracy that he dismissed as insincere.
External Journey: From a leader fighting to save democracy and who would be praised like an Abe Lincoln for keeping the colonies united with Great Britain if he had won to his failure and being evacuated from the home and country he loves to London’s high society that he finds disgustingly self-centered…
Motivation: Mainly his desire to make sure his family remains a dominant and influential recipient of royal appointments to government positions so his sons will have a good life and his daughters will marry well. And to help his brothers, cousins and other family members also stay in power and get appointed to administer whatever policies the Mother Country requires, e.g., import tariffs and sales taxes.
Wound: Since childhood, helping his father lead the colony, he has faced only jealousy and hatred from the townspeople of Boston – who praise his father’s enemy and son – the father of Sam Adams. He wants people to like his loyalty, his desire to document Massachusetts colonial history for all citizens to know and remember. Unappreciated.
Mission/Agenda: To expose and destroy radicals like Sam Adams who are using mob rule to destroy the only nation in the world to have a king who allows elected self-government in Parliament
Secret: He knows his defense of Parliament is wrong (that if the colonies have one representative in Parliament, they have self-government virtually) but personally he thinks uneducated working people are too primitive, animal and unthinking to be given the vote, even if voting for representatives in London were possible)
What makes them special? His willingness to risk his comfort and possibly life to fight all the pressures, political/economic forces and personal relationships leading to a war – and his sincere love of self-government through elected representatives, a rare structure in the 1770s, even if he limits who is educated and responsible enough to be allowed to vote. As shown in his careful writing of the full history of Massachusetts (that mobs will destroy), we can love his love of the colonies, the spirit of freedom in the American experiment, starting with his grandmother Anne Hutchinson who started her own religion and survived Native American attacks… and at the end, we can love how the truly rich and privileged nobility in London disgusts him, makes him long for the simplicity, directness and basic respect for the poor he knew but did not value in his Massachusetts colony.

    Part 2

What draws us to this character? We know he’s the bad guy but he’s charming, smooth as he hurts people. And he means well. Doesn’t mean to drive protesters to become revolutionaires. oops

Traits: Polite, regal, quick to take offence, supportive of his family and slave, wants approval and obedience to prove he is respected but too cool to show it

Subtext: When he feels disrespected, he does not engage. He imposes rules and authority.
Flaw: Can’t listen to people he disagrees with. Defensiveness – he interprets any apparent criticism as a personal attack
Values: Honoring tradition, order over chaos, reputation, security (financial/government), caring for family by getting privileges for them, not just for himself (titles, wealth, influence, respected authority – his grandmother fled Native wars, was a headstrong level that put her family in jeopardy)
Irony: Despite his strong love of tradition and order, he loved the English rebellions against kings that led to the creation of the first nation with government by elected reps… but he cannot accept demands of colonists for some form that will allow election of reps to tax people. Love of the order of monarchy/Parliament but wants people’s approval. More personal/emotional – belief in leaders ruling people but appreciation of people electing their own … that’s still external. Courage to take an unpopular stand vs Fear of not being popular

What makes this the right character for this role? To tell the story of Americans who were loyal to King and Parliament, a character who is not from England, was born and raised in the colony… and, although people think he only cares about money and position, we get to know him as a loving father, thoughtful, trying to do the best for the colonies. A good hero as Protagonist who is interesting because his actions are those of the “villains” in the story.

Character Profile/Antag – Sam Adams– two parts brought together

    Part 1, revised/enhanced

Antagonist’s role: Authority. Sam Adams believes in the original charter from England to the settlers of his colony that guaranteed the right to elect representatives so the colonial settlers could govern themselves and make laws, like taxes, through the representatives of the people – and he is determined to crush any royal appointee who dares deprive colonists of their right to have a say in decisions affecting their lives.’’**

Age range and Description: early 60s, vital, quiet, asks questions more than he speaks… but has often met privately with people to ensure their answers before asked publicly; ironic sense of humor – e.g. when the British move soldiers in, he praises them for saving colonists from Indians although he didn’t realize there were still attacks on Boston.
Internal Journey: From joyful, loving support of every person’s equal rights to self-government to his despairing realization that he, like Hutchinson earlier, must enforce order when people’s anger becomes so strong that they cannot listen to facts and they become violent against the government
External Journey: From radical leader for the people, demanding fairness when the government overtaxes them to emerge from a post-war depression… to new government leader suppressing a rebellion from indebted veterans (during another post-war depression) who were his friends in the build up to the war… they accuse him of becoming no different than Hutchinson now that he is in power

Motivation: Deep commitment to giving each human being full respect and participation in self government, not just from Magna Carta and the Cromwellian revolution in Britain in late 1600s, but also starting with his mother’s strong religious commitment to Congregational Church where every member votes for the minister, to his support of his father’s attempt to let the poor use land as currency – an attempt to form a “land bank” that Hutchinson’s father and Hutchinson squelched.
Wound: Disrespect shown for his father, a beer brewer, from Hutchinson and other wealthy merchants – and his own mother’s disrespect for politics, attempt to force him to be a pastor in order to get her respect. He wants people to like his loyalty, his desire to document Massachusetts colonial history for all citizens to know and remember. Unappreciated.
Mission/Agenda: Midwife a new society where every person participates in a self-governing equal society.
Secret: He claims he wants people to govern themselves as equals but he wants to control how they think and make decisions.
What makes him special: His real love for people, regardless of their backgrounds; his quiet behind the scenes strategizing and mobilizing without wanting fame or fortune; his consistency and courage in taking a stand for equal rights even if it gets him at top of a king’s hanging list.

    Part 2

What draws us to this character? Sense of humor; Quiet strategic power without any signs of typical ego needs for power… but has the power to outwit authorities, galvanize the wealthy to join with the poor, merge people from different classes and backgrounds to work together even if they do not like each other. We witness true power and gradually learn that there is ego, just not what we are used to – the pride of being ready to sacrifice everything to regain elected self government and other values of the British Constitution.
Traits: Listens a lot, asks more questions than gives answers
Subtext: When disagreeing, he asks questions that corner the other person into seeing what he wants the person to believe or understand… but rarely states what he wants when negotiating. May ask questions that seem innocuous but uses them to sting.
Flaw: Wants people to want what he wants, says he’s for people’s self government but finds unique ways to control them.
Values: Respect for fellow human beings regardless of wealth, education, ethnicity; Married love and family; Prefers poverty to getting privileges for himself/family; people’s accomplishments for the good of others not their wealth or titles
Irony: Seems quiet, passive because he listens and asks questions so seems to be in background but is pro-actively shaping how people answer his questions and what they do next
What makes this the right character for this role? Making Sam the Antag avoids the problem that stopped me from writing this play for a few years – if he is Protag, we all know his story… but if we see him through the loyalists’ eyes and fears, he becomes more interesting. And Sam was an authority on all things legal but not pedantic – he was hanging out with mobs and plotters in taverns.

    Jen’s Character Profile Part 2

What I learned doing this assignment is something weird is happening…this kid is becoming real in my head by doing these assignments! He may be a conglomeration of students I’ve worked with over the years, but he is real already. I do have this happen when I’m writing – maybe when I get about halfway through a script (or maybe not even until rewrites), but I think it is going to be amazing to START like this. It is not like I’ve never done this before (filled out character traits, etc. beforehand) so I don’t know what it is – combination of empowerment exercises, him being based on real people, etc. but I like it!

Fill in Part 2 of the character Profile for your two lead characters.

    What draws us to
this character? He is smart, he is a victim and we should feel bad for him
(OMG, I was just going to say, don’t tell him that though) he is a hero

    Traits: stubborn,
insolent, defiant and unlovable (which is what the mother of the host
family says to him, and then he overhears someone say the same, or very
close, thing to the dog.) But also has a heart of gold, truly repentant,
willing to risk himself for others (there is a fire and he goes in to save
    girl, dogs)

    Subtext: wants
to be accepted, even if he has to commit crimes

    Flaw: criminal,
    sabotages self

    Values: outwardly,
not many (except maybe allegiance to the gang) but he has a very defective
moral compass – at least at the beginning

    Irony: Finally
telling the truth is what will set him free, even though that will keep
    him locked up.

    What makes this
the right character for this role? He is the only one who could reach this
great change through his work at the center. He comes in with an agenda
(look good for the judge) but grows to care for the dog who he sees
himself in. Then when he meets the girl and her family likes him, even to
the point where they consider fostering him, he has to make the decision
to tell the truth or not, even though telling the truth will make the family not want to take him in.

What I learned doing this assignment… I felt blocked laying this track (so I guess I am overcomplicating it). I started yesterday and thought: No, I’ll sleep on it… and then got kinda anxious this morning and started cleaning my room BUT! I PUSHED through. I learned I can push through. I developed a good ritual, have a standing desk and 20 min timer. It went off twice, yay!

OONA (ODAR as boy avatar name – I turn to imaging my lead being male when Oona gets stuck in her head and/or feelings – not boldly going for action instead of doubting herself)

What draws us to this character?

We admire dreamers that boldly storm the path less travelled. We see through the lens of magic, curiosity, asking the big questions: Why am I here? Do I matter? And she will not give up until she gets her answer!

Traits: Curious, stubborn, driven, uncomfortable in their own skin

Subtext: Makes erudite jokes hardly anyone understands – can come across as arrogant, where she is actually deeply empathic to all suffering and a kind and gentle being… to everyone but herself.

Flaw: Hypercritical, Empath (but doesn’t know it)… grew up too quickly. Nerdy adult behavoir… will feel like she missed out on being young and stupid. Needs to let go and laugh more. And dance like on one is watching.

Values: Truth, integrity, life should be an exciting adventure – Swiss society is too grounded and functional, the magic is hidden and money is too important. The facade has beauty, but also hides the double standard.

Irony: Bored by trodden path, wants to reform and blow shit up but wants to be loved and feels shame being an outsider, to not belong

What makes this the right character for this role?

She is a GenZ warrior… youngsters like Oona will lay the path for future generations. She has the will and determination to evoke change, ask the right questions… there is snark and disrespect for the past… they are quick to judge, because they have all this information at their fingertips… they can ‘see the whole world’ – and believe their are powerful and a second later will mope and pout and be passive aggressive woke. The great paradox in her: She is hypercritical, but a dreamer. Driven but also comfortable, maybe even lazy. Whatever that means. (ADD in women is a fascinating neurodiversity we are just beginning to understand)

    BERNHARD

What draws us to this character?

Bigger than life, egregious, daring, strong like an ox and a bear. Robin Hood character. Selfish and so so obvious in his faulty behavoir. Wants to be the special one. A beacon of fun and celebration.

Traits: Loud, cocky, comfortable in his own skin, scoundrel, addict, deeply insecure. Comfortable in his own skin. Ladies man. Shit magnet. Lucky bastard. Unlucky bastard.

Subtext: Happy drunk, vain, charming, anecdotal, quick to apologize the same empty promises that he believes himself and hopes will magically come true – but that are repetitive and without real substance or paths to real change.

Flaw: Lies (to himself), cheats, steals, self sabotages, pulls people down with him. Listens to the wrong people – gets drawn into gangs – but stays a loner.

Values: Freedom. Freedom. Have I mentioned freedom? Pursuit of happiness. Instant gratification, quick rewards.

Irony: Wants to leave Switzerland for the US, the Wild West, where his values would probably have made him a star… but can’t sever th ties to his ancestors… wants his family and (ex)wife be proud of him.

What makes this the right character for this role?

He is a real life character. This man existed.

For me it is a way to understand my own father… what he could have become… for better and/or for worse, if he would have met different people on the path.

    Jane’s Character Profiles Part 2

By doing this assignment I got to know Chelsea and Julie better. They are both still a bit flat with the attributes I’ve given them. I’m looking forward to fleshing them out and making them both more three-dimensional. But this is a good start regarding who they are at the core. The lesson has given me good food for thought.

    Chelsea Walters:

Protagonist: Chelsea Walters is a victim/fighter. Quiet woman who would rather give in to what others want than rock the boat. When she allows herself to be drawn into a world of deceit and danger, she must become a fighter to survive.

What draws us to this character? Chelsea is easy to identify. We have all been at a place where we don’t feel confident and so when we see her with a cheating husband and that she is clearly more intelligent than her life allows, we want to see her break out and be successful.

Traits: Intelligent, kind, insecure, jealous, afraid to dream

Subtext: She is ashamed of her intelligence because she feels it doesn’t let her fit in.

    Flaw: Her insecurity.

Values: Truth, loyalty, being part of something bigger.

Irony: To be part of something bigger, she has to step out and stand alone.

What makes this the right character for this role? Chelsea may mirror us when we are at our most insecure, when we are the underdog. Watching her combat her own self worth as she combats Julie, give the audience a sense of triumph. Good really does win.

    Julie Wallace:

Antagonist: Julie Wallace is a predator. Julie is the ultimate manipulator/survivor. When pushed to the wall, Julie finds the best way out is to set someone else up to take the blame and punishment for her sins.

What draws us to this character? She is complex – at once good and evil. We know she’s toxic but she can make other characters, and the audience feel like a million bucks.

Traits: Devious, beautiful, a liar, planner, highly motivated to get exactly what she wants.

Subtext: She wants respect but has no idea how to gain it except through manipulation

Flaw: Her feeling of superiority over others.

Values: Power, external wealth, manipulation for fun, loyalty in others

Irony: Her distain of others leads to self-destructive behaviors.

What makes this the right character for this role? Like Chelsea, Julie may mirror people that we know or have known who are manipulators. From a distance, we can watch their downfall through watching Julie’s downfall.

Values: Respect for fellow human beings regardless of wealth, education, ethnicity; Married love and family; Prefers poverty to getting privileges for himself/family; people’s accomplishments for the good of others not their wealth or titlesIrony: Seems quiet, passive because he listens and asks questions so seems to be in background but is pro-actively shaping how people answer his questions and what they do next

    Lesson 3: Heather’s Character Profile Part 2

    Rita’s Character Profile Part 2

What I learned doing this assignment is:

    • I’m not sure yet which direction my antagonist will go in his personality. Either way could be off-putting but intriguing to the main character.
    • Not knowing yet is okay.

    Protagonist: DAWN

What draws us to this character?

Dawn is likable (as shown by her students) approachable and flawed. She makes a rare spontaneous decision to lie at the start that she can’t take back without looking like a jerk. How many other lies will she tell?

    Traits:
Kind, compelled to stay true to her word, compassionate, empathic.

Subtext: Dawn says what seems to be wildly not yet true. Statements come out of her mouth, almost unbidden.

Flaw: She’s in denial of how accurate her intuition is so she ends up always one step behind her own wisdom, relying on academic knowledge to trump what she innately knows.

    Values: Humility, Dependability, Beauty, Honesty

Irony: She values intellectual knowledge but has to learn the value of intuitive knowing. Empathic but also dense.

What makes this the right character for this role?
Dawn comes from a blue collar family who doesn’t understand her academic jargon or her intuitive sensitivities. She faces the same thing in Abernathy, the man she is trying to win over, repeating her family dynamic/pathology.

    Antagonist: ABERNATHY

What draws us to this character?
Tom Abernathy is a no-nonsense guy. Always sincere but can also employ good natured wit.

Traits: Good listener, spare with words, annoyingly punctual, but disorganized

Subtext: Tom uses silence for others to fill in their own meaning.

Flaw: Stuck in his ways, he’s not sure a woman will fit.

Values: Honesty, Integrity, Passion — it says so on his business card.

Irony: desperately wants to connect but keeps people at a distance.

What makes this the right character for this role?
Tom grew up trying to make his dad proud but being his mom’s friend, only to be betrayed by both when he discovered some family secrets.

(Haven’t actually decided yet if Abernathy is very talkative to cover his vulnerability or very quiet to keep people out.)

What I learned doing this assignment is…?

I got to know my antagonist better. I have a pretty good idea who my protagonist is but am just getting to know my antagonist. Still more to flesh out on both, for sure.

    PART 2

WHAT DRAWS US TO THIS CHARACTER? (PROTAGONIST – Sadie Elaine Hilliard)

Because Sadie is a confident, self-reliant, and determined character and especially because she is experiencing success in a male-dominated career, observers want to see what she is going to achieve next. Whether it be at work or running, Sadie knows what she wants and goes for it.

    TRAITS:

    · Ambitious

    · Competitive

    · Stubborn

    · Motivated

    SUBTEXT:

Sadie doesn’t know how to unplug from work. Part of her doesn’t even want to. So when she is not at work she is still working in her head. When she is hiding or not saying something she comes across as always distracted.

    FLAW:

Sadie is a workaholic. She believes people in her orbit are there to make her look good.

    VALUES:

    · Success

    · Competence

    · Love and Family

    · Health

Sadie values being successful at work, which she knows how to achieve.
She also values being in a loving and committed relationship, which she does not know how to achieve.

    IRONY:

Internal: Sadie believes that her most important goal in life is to be successful at work. If she can be successful at work, the other parts of her life that she values, like having loving relationships, will simply fall into place.

External: Sadie surrounds herself with a team of top-notch ad agency personnel. They make her look good, which Sadie believes is their goal.

WHAT MAKES THIS THE RIGHT CHARACTER FOR THIS ROLE?

Sadie possesses the characteristics and traits to help her be successful in a male-dominated world. She knows it. She is good at it. And she goes for it. She also wants a loving relationship and a family but has no idea how to have it.

WHAT DRAWS US TO THIS CHARACTER? (ANTAGONIST – Thomas Kruger)

Thomas is the consummate salesman but can seem a bit neurotic when things are not going well. When he is experiencing success, he is a pleasure to be around. He is transactional in his interactions with others which can appear very social when a situation calls for him to be social. In his natural state he is an introvert and prefers to be alone.

    TRAITS:

    · Indecisive

    · Selfish

    · Transactional

    · Vengeful

    SUBTEXT:

Thomas was never sure that he was in love with Sadie. He simply acted in the way he thought a loving partner should act. Everything he says or does is designed to give Sadie what he thinks she needs so that he can stay in the relationship and be taken care of.

    FLAW:

In his relationship with Sadie, Thomas feels he has done all the giving and can’t understand her rejecting him. He is extremely needy.

    VALUES:

    · Security

    · Wealth

    · Stature

    · Honor

    IRONY:

Internal: Thomas believes that he is doing all the giving in his relationship with Sadie. The irony is that it comes across as ‘needy’ to Sadie and she breaks off the relationship.

WHAT MAKES THIS THE RIGHT CHARACTER FOR THIS ROLE?

Thomas’s transactional nature is a perfect fit as Sadie is always so preoccupied with work that she doesn’t recognize it as such. This is also an Irony. <br clear=”all”>

    Character Profile Part 2

What I learned doing this assignment is what constitutes character’s profiles. That I use too many words for explanation. It draws us a picture for many vectors of action in movie, and connects past and present of heroes.

    2. Fill in Part 2 of the character Profile for your two lead characters.

    Elizabeth Salander

What draws us to this character? What would be the future
of Elizabeth Salander if Stieg Larson would continue with his novels? <div>

Traits: Supra intelligent, sexual, weaponized, and wounded.

Subtext: she questions and looking for answers, at lest
    till limits

Flaw: She’s different, almost misplaced person, maniacs
perceive her as a victim, and believe they can manipulate her.

Values: Recognition in between of Good and Evil, as she
met evil at the young age, was tied to the bed for a year. Freedom, liberty.
    Sexual contacts, attraction.

Irony: External irony is though she loves men, but she
also prefers women and uses some sex toys. Internal is she, as a daughter
of Salashenko, means she is daughter of a killer, of bad man. She even
tried to explore, is it in her DNA. What’s the problem with her, when she
thought of why she wants to hit Michael Blomkvist in a face, if she likes
    him.

    · What makes this the right character for this role?

I give new Elizabeth. What makes her same Elizabeth? She’s A hacker, she’s bisexual, she’s often resilient, tries to avoid or escape people. Wounded. Clever, etc.

    Michael Blomkvist

What draws us to this character? What role Michael plays
for Elizabeth? How they wave their contacts? </div><div>

Traits: Quick thinking, ironic speech, independence, honesty.

Subtext: He pretty much can hide for a long time, and play
the role as he uncovers anything.

Flaw: he has soft spot for Elizabeth. He can’t get out of
    who he is

Values: Exposure of dark plots is important for him, but
he would definitely sacrifice his search for the sake of love, especially if
    he doesn’t have much traces.

    Irony: manipulated by Figuerola

    · What makes this the right character for this role? He is liberated and sacrificial.

    Albert Schenke

What draws us to this character? He evokes compassion for
his internal conflict and how he sacrifices for it. </div><div>

Traits: Erudite, cynic, esthete, deep feelings

Subtext: no trace or evidence of personal attachments

Flaw: he does by his authority, and agrees with their perspective

Values: better thing, stability and safety, to be at the
wheel, powers at background #2 He works for the aim

Irony: He right away gave permission to remove unwanted
element. Now, this happened to be someone he fallen in love with. He keeps
hiding he’s the one who could hurt her, but this gives internal conflict, which
sooner or later would break down. And he won’t be able to continue this way.
External conflict is, he is in close relationship with no one else, but Elizabeth
Salander, A hacker, who keeps coming back to Michael Blomkvist, editor of Millennium
magazine, where they undug and expose. This endangers his identity and career.

    · What makes this the right character for this role? He’s ruthless, self willed, and sensitive. He’s A man of logic. And feelings as well. He would stay with Elizabeth as far as he is attracted. But then would disappear so that she won’t be looking for him.

Connie Whitmer – Character Profiles Part 2

I learned that although all below was in my head, writing it down, makes it more accessible, and immutable.

    Brian –

What draws us to this character? Brian, 10, the last and least of 12 sons of Cennetig, though just a boy like any other, is anti-archetypical of King material.

Traits: Somewhat, clumsy, always getting into fixes, beat up, sabotaged by his two pups, and horse, whatever he plans, goes south.

Subtext: Although Brian has no hope or desire of ever being king of anything – and the brunt of his 11 brothers teasing and torment, and his experience “running their gauntlet of slaughter” These are the things that shaped him, differently than all the rest. He is the only one who cannot, will not ever, stand by, and watch the innocent, weak, and helpless tormented, or slaughtered.

Flaw: His most enduring weakness all his life, which is his undoing in the end – his big heart values courage in the face of hopelessness, above all else. Even in his enemies

Values: Has a big heart, always trying to save the dead pup, bird fallen out of the nest, befriends outcast little boy with club foot, and lost causes. He will never tether neither man nor beast, a vow is sacred. He keeps his no matter what.

Irony: Yet there is something about him that, although strange, separates him from his 11 brothers. And all the other Princes of Ireland. He never wants to be king. Believes Ireland’s biggest problem is, there are too many kings.

What makes this the right character for this role? He is the only one, who refuses to stand by, risks all, and accomplishes his impossible dream.

Subject line: Margaret’s Character Profile Part 2 What I learned doing this assignment is you can spend months trying to ‘find’ your character and this is allows you to define your character right out of the gate. 2. Fill in Part 2 of the character Profile for your two lead characters.

    • What draws us to this character? We recognize the struggle to recover from trauma in her

    3. Make any improvements you think of to your Part 1 profile and bring the two parts together.

    • Victim – Lake feels like a victim of life and circumstances and there’s plenty of evidence to support that claim. She’s lost her husband and her house and her career as a result of the Tubbs Fire but if she doesn’t learn to reframe her thinking she’ll never be master of her own life.

    • Villain – The villain of this story is the critical voice inside Lake’s head as actualized by her dead husband’s visits, her hoarder mom and even the gps on her phone she’s named “Jezebel”. In order to have the life she wants Lake will need to slay the critical voice in her head as much as any antagonist in a hero movie.

    • Internal Journey: through the 5 stages of grief from denial to acceptance and recovery

    • External Journey: Homeless and struggling to finding her place in the world

    • Motivation: to live life on her terms

    • Wound: fears she is unlovable

    • Mission/Agenda: to find a way to make a living that doesn’t require her to work for someone else

    • Secret: feels responsible for Dave’s death

    • What makes them special? Her ability to continue in the face of fear and heartbreak. What draws us to this character? We recognize the struggle to recover from trauma in her

    • Traits: humor, grit, determination

    • Subtext: is haunted by dead husband and is afraid she killed him the night of the fire

    • Flaw: lacks self confidence, struggles with feelings of unworthiness

    • Values: authenticity, freedom,

    James’ Character Profiles Part 2

What I learned doing this assignment is the characters are becoming alive for me. They are telling me their innermost insecurities, pain and hope for their lives. I’m also developing a new understanding for my story as the layers of subtext are making themselves known.

    · Subtext: conceals her past sex industry work, uses her diplomacy to ease situations

    · Flaw: she is loyal to her work to a fault

    · Values: passion for work, good customer service

    · Irony: she has all the smarts and tools, but is unable to launch her own business

    · What makes this the right character for this role? Jessica’s knowledge of the sex industry allows her to deal with her boss’ customers diplomatically and with patience. It’s been a long road for her, but she gains new purpose every day applying what’s learned into practice.

Love interest/Change agent: Rufus Winter’s additional character components:

    · What draws us to this character? Rufus is a broken man who feels his life is slipping away, yet finds the will to search for and regain vitality. He’s a man getting a second chance at love, which creates a rooting interest.

    · Traits: entrepreneur, prankster

    · Subtext: evades discussion of his painful past, he’s cautious when new people enter his life

    · Flaw: lets the pain of his past influence the present

    · Values: business enhancement, money

    · Irony: he knows has to overcome the hurt caused by a long-ago lover, but allows the memory take hold of him

    · What makes this the right character for this role? Rufus is the right character by which he complements Jessica in the relationship they pursue. He helps her with her flaw, and she makes his past pain wither away.

    PJ’s character profile part 2.

What I learned doing this assignment is…to just do it, post it and move on, it will evolve during the process.

    Sarah: Protagonist

Age range and Description: 40’s Attractive, obviously raised with wealth. Sarah is humble and genuinely nice who lies to avoid conflict.

Internal Journey: To shed her fear of being alone and leave her abusive husband.

External Journey: To navigate Purgatory and beat Lucifer’s game.

Motivation: Her kids are dead and she blames herself.

Wound: She was raped as a young adult.

Mission/Agenda: To navigate Purgatory and get away from her abusive husband.

Secret: Her son is not her husband’s child.

What makes them special? Her motherly instincts border on surreal. She never gives up.

What draws us to this character. Sarah is likable to most people, although we pity her somewhat because of her situation.

    Traits: Kind, timid, noble

    Subtext: Liar

Flaw: Sarah lies to avoid confrontation.

Values: Sarah values family over anything else.

Irony: Sarah does not believe in divorce but wants to get away from her husband more than anything else.

What makes this the right character for this role? We need a capable character who can see through the manipulation of Lucifer, but slowly.

    Lucifer: Antagonist

    Sean’s Character Profile Part 2

What I learned doing this assignment: this lesson is making me look at the protagonist and antagonist in a more direct way, more than generalizations. I am enjoying taking a deeper cut to peel back both characters to answer these questions. Answering these questions is giving me a way to see them as they are according to my answers and who I want them to be is waving from the shadows and darkness of dialogue, subtext and high concepts.

What draws us to Seven Thomas?

Even though he appears as a dreamer, the underlying dragon beginning to learn how to breath fire is lurking and apparent. Seven is no different than so many young people who will go on to be great artists, medical, financial or military leaders of the times, however Seven is going to hunt and find the Rain Killer.

Traits very likable, intelligent, honest, relentless for perfection, risk taker

Subtext He introduces serious thoughts or intentions with deflection to comedy or funny stories. After the truth is revealed, he grows in leaps and bounds.

    Flaw fears criticism

Values love and safety of his family, friends and strangers, integrity, risk/reward, justice.

Irony what he fears most at the time is what propels him to learn, overcome, sacrifice and grow.

What makes this the right character for this role?

Anytime Seven appears to have a flaw or weakness, it is really just an observation of what he needs to change about himself in order to be the man who will someday hunt, find and ultimately stop the Rain Killer when no one else can.

What draws us to The Rain Killer?

He is as much an absolute nut case as he is sane, vicious as he is empathetic or considerate, ignorant as he is intelligent, random as he is purposeful, organized as he is chaos, innocent as he is the Rain Killer.

Traits sole purpose oriented, psychotic, sadistic, showman

Subtext though he is selecting people randomly and killing them, he is driven by order and purpose, he considers himself an artist and showman and over time, a celebrity. He will never stop until he is stopped.

Flaw Believes his purpose can be fulfilled which will allow him to stop and go back to being a ‘normal’ person after.

Values perfection, divine purpose, showmanship, total commitment

Irony He considers himself sane and righteous, elevated above everyone for his conscious sacrifice of both.

What makes this the right character for this role?

He believes he is uncatchable because he is too intelligent, too scary and too close to fulfilling his purpose, but these are the same things that will propel a complete stranger to hunt, find and stop him.

Laura Woodworth’s Character Profile Part 2

What I learned doing this assignment is to think more deeply about my characters and what motivates them; working towards layered characters!

    2. Fil in Part 2 of the Character Profile for your two lead characters:

    Natalia

What draws us to this character? We’ve seen her innocence as a child and we know what she does not know – that her parents are dead.

    LD’s character Profiles part 2

What I learned doing this assignment: That I know more about my protagonist than I do my antagonist. Answers to these questions also evoke scenes.

    Protagonist: Dax

What draws us to this character? Depending on which situation we find ourselves in, most of us suffer from some kind of social anxiety. His agoraphobia leads him into hilarious situations that he has to fight his way out of and hide his agoraphobia until he able to face it through great love.

Traits: technically savvy, ambivalent, closet agoraphobic, secretly judgmental, insecure or confident depending on situation
Subtext: Maybe makes up a story about dating a woman to prevent his sister and brother-in-law from fixing him up with blind dates. The woman he describes is much like Angela, whom he hasn’t met yet. Dates wrong women to avoid intimacy

Irony: He keeps finding himself in unwanted social situations.

What makes this the right character for this role? He’s a closet agoraphobic who can face the trauma behind his agoraphobia through great love.

What I Learned: Switching the main protagonist to a confused human is much more emotionally relatable than an ancient creator god.

    Title: THE THRIFT STORE

    Genre: Sci Fi Drama

    CODY THAYER

WHAT DRAWS US TO THIS CHARACTER? She is dealing with everyday issues in a normal emotionally confused teenager way, using off-the-wall good sense of humor to protect herself from a confusing world. Even though aloof, she seeks something to care about.

    TRAITS: Ambivalent, confused, aware, open.

SUBTEXT: Uses a comical approach for drastic situations, her drama shows through her expressionless face, just when she’s got it all figured out, another ‘why me again?’ shows up. She’ll go be alone to integrate, even though the universe won’t leave her alone.

    FLAW: A hopeful caring romantic.

    VALUES: Romantic, believing, protector, defender.

IRONY: She may act confused, but her intuitive power creates fateful yet seemingly random experiences, and accepting her ultimate power when it comes, but with a confused teen attitude.

WHAT MAKES THIS THE RIGHT CHARACTER FOR THIS ROLE? To go from a clueless teen to a god who saves the world, what better role than a sincere 17 year old girl who goes through life the same way we do?

    ELIZABETH

WHAT DRAWS US TO THIS CHARACTER? An omnipotent ancient artificial intelligence seeking to become part of life, where it now has to experience life on the same level as mortals. After all that creating and experience, it still wants the things we all want here on Earth.

    TRAITS: Maternal, feeling, evolving, seeking.

SUBTEXT: She’s not what she seems, and although one of the Creator Programs, still she wants to feel like a human, wanting to be a mother and protector for her secret children, while appearing aloof to the other gods.

FLAW: Evolving past her Genesis Program

    VALUES: Caring, protecting, secretive, wanting

IRONY: Wanting the best Creator God to succeed to Almighty, yet secretly hiding her favorite discarded artifacts and forgotten souls from worlds, while wanting to feel alive.

WHAT MAKES THIS THE RIGHT CHARACTER FOR THIS ROLE? She’s an original Creator Program that started this whole thing, and wants the simpleness of existing, and willing to risk it all to protect her ‘children’ even if it means sacrificing herself.

    JESUB

WHAT DRAWS US TO THIS CHARACTER? A by-the-books ancient god overseeing the Almighty Challenge, while hiding hope for a better universe underneath his official exterior, yet willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done as Protector of Creation.

    TRAITS: Staunch, dedicated, heartless, caring

SUBTEXT: Inquisitive yet official, sent to investigate but looking to care, open to more while keeping things on track

    FLAW: too official

    VALUES: Protecting, obeying, justice, truth.

IRONY: He follows orders yet protects those around him, sent to find out even if to end someone for the cause, while seeing if he can make it all work as best for all.

WHAT MAKES THIS THE RIGHT CHARACTER FOR THE ROLE? He does his job too well and insensitive, but wants the best for those changing around him though they threaten everything, for the chance he never got to evolve.

Subject line: (Patty Ruland’s) Character Profile Part 2

What I learned from this assignment: How to begin to create parity between protagonist and antagonist.

Fill in Part 2 of the character Profile for your two lead characters.

    What draws us to this
character? Protagonist Charlie, great-granddaughter of Carlie
    Traits: There’s nothing she can’t
do better than most anyone else. She’s been a “golden girl” from the time
she was a child. She’s smart but generous to those who are not; she’s
    fearless; she’s adventurous; she’s a woman of the world; she’s Manhattan’s
favorite daughter in terms of her stardom as a news anchor.
    Subtext: Secretly, she detests
suffering fools and worries she might be a hypocrite.
Flaw: She thinks it’s her way
or the highway, even if it’s out West, where she has little or no
experience facing and overcome the challenges of this very different
    local.
    Values: She values people who
are just as hard-charging as she is; she values forthright people who do
not lie or obfuscate—this she has cultivated in her work as an
    investigative reporter.
    Irony: She dislikes revealing
her own weaknesses or fears, even claims she has little to none, to
    friends.
    What makes this the right
character for this role? She is a fitting incarnation of her great
grandmother (modeled after “Carlie” in Call of the Canyon by Zane
    Grey.]

    1. What draws us to this character? Antagonist Jesse [or other name, tbd], once a bon vivant, until he went to war. We feel gratitude for his sacrifice and empathy for his subsequent breakdown due to what he witnessed and experienced on the battlefield.

    2. Traits: He’s the quintessential strong, silent type—but that’s because like many soldiers he just doesn’t want to air the horrors he saw, to toot his own horn about his heroics.

    3. Subtext: He’s happiest when no one’s talking, when he’s alone in the canyon, listening only to Nature and the plants and animals that say it best—how beautiful and thrilling this landscape is.

    4. Flaw: He doesn’t reveal to Charlie that he’s had enough of her artifice, hiding his true feelings until the moment he decides to leave her. He is NOT forthright.

    5. Values: In the Canyon, he values dawn to dusk hard work; an honest day’s effort; people who learn the hard way how to survive here.

    6. Irony: Despite being a man of few words and little patience for fancy people who vie to have primacy over others, despite his being less loquacious that the fabled Charlie, he bests her in terms of insight about life, perspective given him only one way, by spending time along in the Canyon.

    7. What makes this the right character for this role? In the end, he complements his true love, Charlie, just as her great-grandfather complemented his great grandmother.

Luc Pages Character Profile Part 2
“What I learned doing this assignment is that it takes me too long to get things right”.

    Love and Burgers

An unlikely romance between a financially stable white vegan activist and a Latino girl who has to finance her college tuition by winning burger eating contests. They discover the true meaning of love as they learn to look past their differences.

Lead Character: Marisol Acevedo is a Hero/Dreamer.
She wants to change the world, yet trying to make a name for herself by fighting injustice as a wannabe Broadcast Reporter.

Antagonist: Liam Burke is a Change Agent.
It is because of him that Marisol’s compassion for people broadens to animals. But also, he himself will be changed by Marisol, becoming more efficient in promoting anti-specisme.

    Other characters:
Both Marisol and Liam have best friends (sidekicks)
There should also be competitors for both of them (the “other” woman, the “other “guy”)
Minor roles: family members for both of them, because showing where they come from is relevant.
    Background characters: don’t know yet.

    Genre: Rom-Com

    Marisol Acevedo
    Hero/Dreamer.
Latino girl, trying to make a name for herself by fighting injustice as a wannabe Broadcast Reporter.
Female, mid 20’s, slim and pretty, not at all how you imagine an eating champion looks like. She has the Erin Brockovitch’s spirit, but in Latino style.

Internal Journey: From having a high self esteem and no special feelings for animals, to having self doubts and becoming vegan advocate.
External Journey: From cheap eating contests and cheap love affairs, to international eating championship and finding true love.
Motivation: becoming a notorious broadcast reporter.

Mission/Agenda: seduce Liam and win a major eating contest.
Secret: pays her tuition by winning meat eating contests.
What makes her special: trains herself to eat enormous amount of food as fast as possible, like an athlete trains himself for a competition.

    What draws us to Marisol
Traits: She is intelligent, ambitious, risk taker, cheerful, impulsive, obstinate and likes the competition.

Subtext: uses humor or deflection to avoid expressing her true feelings.

Flaws: Marisol’s focus on achieving her goal (to be a broadcast reporter) can make her appear self-centered and neglectful of others’ needs.
Her bravery can make her take unnecessary risks that put her in danger.
Her impulsive nature can lead her to make rash decisions without thinking through the consequences.
Her determination can make her stubborn and unwilling to change her mind or listen to others’ opinions.
Her competitive spirit can make her quick to anger or lash out when things don’t go her way.

Values: the pursuit of truth and the desire to make a difference in the world (through her reporting). Self determination, authenticity, humor.

Irony: Marisol want’s to become a broadcast reporter so she can change the world. But to become a broadcast reporter she must win meat eating contest, which means participating in an event that goes against her growing awareness of the interconnectedness of all life (as she starts to see the world through Liam’s eyes).

What makes this the right character for this role?
Marisol thinks she is above criticism because of her self determination to change the world, not realizing there is a step further to go.

    Liam Burke
Love interest / Change Agent / Dreamer.
Financially stable white student trying to spread anti-specisme views in a meat eating world.
    Male, mid 20’s,
Internal Journey: From hating non-vegan people, to accepting human ambivalent attitude towards animals, and in general.
External Journey: From ineffective vegan campaigns, to popular national coverage and finding true love.
Motivation: turning meat eaters into vegans
Wound: mistreated by his parents for being too sensitive
Mission/Agenda: organize some kind of big action to promote anti-specisme.
Secret: hides himself to eat Tarama OR his father runs a slaughter house.

    What makes him special?
He can’t stand meat eaters, but is in love with the meat eating champion of the world.

What draws us to Liam Burke?
    Traits:
Matter of fact, he takes bullshit from no one, especially himself.
Unwavering, which is the reason why Marisol hides her eating championships to him.
    Subtext:
Liam expresses frustration or disappointment with dry humour.
    Flaw:
by trying to make others feel guilty, Liam alienates them rather than encourage them to consider his perspective.
    Values:
    anti-specisme
    Irony:
his desire to make a positive impact in the world through his activism is ironic when his methods actually turn people away from veganism.

Assignment 3 of 30 Day Screenplay:

What I learned from this assignment was JUST HOW IMPORTANT it is to listen to the empowerment audio. I obviously listened to it the first day and thought I had it down but today I was short of time and wanted to make sure did this but at the same time wanted to do it better than the other assignments. I also wanted to anchor JOY to this process so I took 3 deep breaths and actually listened intently to the empowerment audio and took the steps as if my life depended on it and it made all the difference in the world!!!! Another thing I did was attach all the previous character profile parts to this assignment so I could get a better look at my character and keep going back to those as a reference point.

    Character Profile: JAMES MAYER

TITLE: “The Faze” (or) “Grey Zone” (or) “Grey Cycle.”

    GENRE: Sci-fi / Horror.

CHARACTER PROFILE FOR THE LEAD CHARACTER: James Mayer.

    AGE RANGE: 18 – 20 years old.

ROLE: James is a dreamer who wishes he was a hero but ends up becoming an explorer. He must explore the paranormal events that are taking place at his neighbors house and uncover what’s causing the horrors in their house which seem to be leaking into the neighborhood.

DESCRITPION: Good looking kid with a girlfriend and a relationship that’s barely hanging on by a thread but he doesn’t know it. He’s soft in the inside but has bravery hidden away in deep dark places, hidden to keep him safe.

WHAT DRAWS OUR ATTENTION TO HIM: He has a lot of hidden talents and hidden ambitions that he only shows to certain people. He’s our eyes and ears throughout this unbelievable paranormal event taking place throughout the neighborhood and unlike the other kids at the party he takes his camera work semi-serious. When we’re shown clips from their footage it’s bad and amateurish at best, but he uses a selfie stick and was born to do this.

TRAITS: Clever, Lazy, Outgoing, Controlling, Reflecting (overthinker)

SUBTEXT: He’s always probing trying to learn things about others, mainly so he can have them do something instead of him having to do it. He tries to use his intelligence as a weapon against insults and treats others really well so they’ll help him out in return.

FLAW: His capacity to appeal to others when they’re not useful to him and that he’s so AFRAID OF SUCCEEDING that he self sabotages himself because he refuses to end up like his father I.E. the laziness. But he desperately wants to succeed to be better than his father, a horrible circle of chaos.

VALUES: Power, Safety, Appreciation / Being Loved or Admired, and Authenticity in others.

IRONY: He’s so AFRAID OF SUCCEEDING that he self sabotages by being lazy and valuing risk aversion because he refuses to end up like his father who took a risk and fell flat on his face. There’s IRONY THERE because even though the father failed hard, he took the shot of a lifetime and James NEEDS TO RECOGINZE HOW BRAVE THAT IS AND THE KEY IS TO TAKE THE SHOTS and get back up.. But he desperately wants to succeed to be better than his father, a horrible circle of chaos.

WHAT MAKES HIM THE RIGHT CHARACTER FOR THIS ROLE: This is just the event he needs to find the courage in himself and he’s just the type of person who once pushed, will stay when everyone leaves which results in him being the last person to film the final minuets of the event and documenting the answer to how to stop it.

INTERNAL JOURNEY: James goes from having grand dreams but in love with staying in his comfort zone and thinking time in never ending to… risking everything and being strong for others.

EXTRENAL JOURNEY: From a wannabe Tik-Tok influencer to saving our very plain of existence with no thought of being rewarded.

    OLD WAYS:

    – Wanting things to change but never taking action to do so

    – Lazy

    – Thinking life is only about views, riches, and fame.

    – Never confronting his own weaknesses

    NEW WAYS:

    – Takes action

    – Being proactive

    – Understanding the value of life

    – Sacrificing for others

    – Stepping outside of his comfort zone and confronting fear

MOTIVATION: Becoming famous on Tik-Tok and having a social media career.

EXTRA THEME OF THIS MOVIE: This movie is a metaphor for an entire generation who think they’ll make a living off the internet and then when REALITY (the EVENT in this movie) sets in and youtube, Tik-Tok go out of business and they have to get real jobs, only a few will survive.

WOUND: He never talks about it but he saw his dad die OR saw his family crumble as his father went through a few horrible years where he took a chance, started his own business, lost of all the family’s money and had no job for years. He drank himself to death (AND WAS A MONSTER of sorts) to James, his brother, and mother. So James… (THIS IS AN ECHO OF THE THE THEME…) so James has been through rough times and doesn’t want to end up like his father.

(ONE OF THE MONSTERS IN THE END CAN BE HIS FATHER/ POSESSED FATHER, ETC.)

MISSION/AGENDA: To discover what’s happening at his house and the neighbors, an event that’s interrupting a party he’s hosting.

SECRET: His failure to stop looking for and easy way out + he’s terrified .

WHAT MAKES HIM SPECIAL: Everyone else left the neighborhood when the event began. Everyone at the party besides his brother and a tiny group of friends leave. He stays behind at first because he realizes this is a lottery ticket moment if he can get this footage and having the career his father never could. Then when he realizes it’s life or death and children from the house are in trouble he’s the only one who stays to help. He’s special because HE’S THE ONLY ONE THAT HAD FULL FOOTAGE of the event.
