Anna 10 things Things I learned from this lesson. At first, I was not at all confident that I could pull these points out in a coherent fashion. Once I focused and followed the steps, it worked.
A. What is most unique about your villain and hero?
The villains share enjoyment in the power of bullying. The hero is a Newfoundland dog with magical superpowers of telepathic communication.
B. Major hook of your opening scene?
We meet Alfie, the hero of the story in a back alley. He is a huge homeless dog, cold and hungry contrasting with the Christmas abundance of the story world of the village.
Emotional dilemma?
The emotional dilemma for the audience is seeing the dog explore the beautiful Christmas village which also contains harsh realities like poverty and homelessness.
E. Major twists?
Next, we encounter Dylan, a teenage boy (also an evolving hero,) in the middle of a schoolyard brawl. He is targeted by schoolyard bullies because he does not speak. He has been electively silent since the death of his mother two years ago. His silence is making life difficult for himself and his father.
We also meet two adult bullies, a mean schoolteacher and an oppressive and hypocritical school principal, Baldy Brown. Both have it in for Dylan. Elizabeth Perkins the schoolteacher expresses her contempt for all the students with a rap song and dance. She has a Cruella de Ville-like personality.
Big surprises:
1.Alfie meets an angel, Michelle, who is the deceased mother of Dylan. She bestows the gift of telepathic communication on Alfie and asks him to help her son.
2.Steve, comes home to find his son Dylan, giving the filthy Newfoundland dog a bath. He plans to send the dog to the pound.
Reversals:
1.Alfie wins a temporary reprieve from the pound; With Alfie’s help, Dylan starts to emerge from his shell.
2.Dylan’s bully teacher Elizabeth is trying to send Dylan off to a boarding school so she can have Steve to herself.
3. Following a shocking incident with a teacher locking Lilly (Dylan’s only friend) in the school cellar, and Dylan attempting to rescue Lilly, he calls the teacher a liar. Dylan’s fate is sealed. He is to be sent to boarding school in London. Dylan runs away.
4. Alfie saves the day and locates DylanSurprise 1. is when Dylan and Lilly, his friend meet the alpha bully, Victor in the park on Christmas day. His family are fighting, so Dylan and Lilly invite Victor to Dylan’s house for Christmas dinner.
Surprise 2. Alfie tells Dylan he wants to locate his brother and sister. Dylan agrees to help Alfie by breaking into the school computer lab to find Cocoa and Pirate on Facebook. -

Michael Wallace’s 10 Most Interesting Things
What I learned doing this assignment was to avoid telling the story, and instead focus on pointing out interesting hooks that would interest the Producer.
1 Our hero is a Wall Street executive during the “dot com” boom who makes money for his clients, but also manipulates the market for his company’s gain and those he choses to benefit. He returns to his hometown and mentors a twelve-year-old kid in a school stock trading club to win back his childhood sweetheart, who is a teacher in the kid’s school.
2 The opening scene is a little league baseball game set when the executive was a twelve-year-old kid, and he win’s the game by hitting a home run which ends by him taking out the opposing team’s catcher in a play at the plate. He looks up in the stands and sees “his girl” staring at the opposing team’s catcher lying on the ground. He helps the catcher up to win the smile of his girl. This scene defines the character and his objectives.
3 The executive gives the kid inside information to help him win his stock picking contest, and in exchange the kid agrees to help the executive by finding out any information he can on his teacher, to help the executive win her back. Everything is going great until it is discovered through an SEC probe that the kid is trading real stocks in an account set up in his mother’s name and making a fortune.
4 The politically motivated NYS AG (the villain) who vows to clean up Wall Street in his quest to become the next Governor, faces the dilemma of prosecuting a kid for insider trading after he refuses to settle, and the media won’t let the story go away. Despite his company’s political contributions, he secretly threatens to go after the executive if he doesn’t agree to testify against the kid.
5 After resisting at first, the executive agrees to testify to save himself, losing the girl and his relationship with the kid.
6 The kid’s heart wrenching testimony on the stand makes the executive realize that he learned everything that is wrong with Wall Street, and those that get away with questionable activities like him, from him.
7 The night before he is supposed to testify, he secretly feeds inside information about his firms dealings to help the kid get off. -

Class 2 Lesson 4
Pamela Milton’s 10 Most Interesting Things
What I learned: Breaking out and defining the interesting things / components forces you to exam the flow and viability of the script.
1. and 3: Which specific hooks have you used and organize them with 10 Most Interesting Things.
A) Most intriguing thing about villain: There are two villains involved. One for each time era, 1934 and 1980. An Interesting thing about Zebulon Hardcore, the nemesis in 1934, is he is doing his job as an FBI agent tracking down the Chutney Gang whom he thinks has kidnapped and killed his fiancée, Tempest Headley.
In 1980, the IRS division head, Bennett Caruthers, is the villain. He has used his position over the years to achieve his own goals. He has the protagonist, McKenna Worth, go undercover to find the embezzled bank money then plans to eliminate her after she has recovered it.
B) Opening Hook: In 1934, the Chutney Gang ends up in an armed stand-off with than staff and customers moments after entering the bank.
In 1980, McKenna Worth is the only female agent the IRS Recovery division. On her first field assignment she is told she will be going undercover.
C) Turning Point: In 1934, Tempt Headley kidnaps the Chutney Gang. Shortly after, she becomes their leader.
In 1980, Zebulon arrives in Yesterday. He is now a bounty hunter but still obsessed with capturing the Chutney Gang.
D) Emotional Dilemma: In 1934, Tempest Headley loves Zebulon but knows she won’t be happy if she married him.
In 1980, While working undercover, McKenna becomes attracted to Sherriff Armitage but a relationship built on a lie and her career drive gives the relationship no future.
E) Major Events: In 1934, while in disguise, Tempest takes Zebulon hostage and forces him let the Chutney Gang go free.
F) Reversals: In 1934, Having saved the Gang from Zebulon Tempest decides to leave the Gang and return to Yesterday
In 1980, Vince Minelli, McKenna’s partner, is reporting all of McKenna’s actions and conversations to a mysterious third party.
G) Betrayal: After McKenna refuses to uses illegal and unethical techniques to gain information, Caruthers “throws her under the bus” forcing her to publicly admit to Armitage and the towns people she has been using them to get information.
H) Surprises: McKenna discover a secret room in City Hall which contains information revealing who did what, where and when with the embezzled money over the decades….. she does not tell her boss, Caruthers nor Sheriff Armitage.
2 – Other things which would interest a producer: The Narrator plays various small roles in the story like the Stage Manager in the play “Our Town” by Thorton Wilder. This would help attract a bankable actor. The script has a number of quirky characters in both time periods which would attract actors. There is a strong female lead in each era. -
Subject Line: Sandy: 10 Most Interesting Things
There are more twists and turns, betrayals and surprises than I realized.
• A. What is most unique about your villain and hero?
A unique heroine: a genius who teaches herself math from books by herself, loves it so much she defies her governess and the strict expectations of her childhood not to read books and later defies her parents by marrying in name only to escape the old traditions of the times that require she become a wife without an education.
A unique antagonist: a brilliant man, blinded by outdated traditions so much he cannot recognize a genius and a person who would be an asset to his legacy, rejecting her instead.
• B. Major hook of your opening scene?
A child, Sonia, who is supposed to play and be carefree, would rather secretly study math and suffer punishments to do so.
• C. Any turning points?
–Sonia’s sister plans to escape her family by marrying a man in name only and gain her freedom, but at the last minute, the man, Vladimir, decides to marry Sonia instead.
–In Europe and Russia, women are strictly forbidden as students at any university. Still, a wise, brilliant mathematician in Berlin sees Sonia’s genius and bravely offers to tutor her privately, leading to a lifelong friendship and groundbreaking mathematical discoveries.
–Sonia’s close relationship with her sister, Anuita, is blown asunder when Vladimir chooses Sonia to marry, and the schism is further fractured when Anuita needs Sonia to cover for her and deceive her father so Anuita can take part in the French Revolution.
-With nowhere to turn and no financial stability, Sonia insists on returning to her joy of mathematics and repairing the relationships with her mentor and sister.
• D. Emotional dilemma?
–Sonia desperately wants to be loved and be a mathematician. Yet she throws away her chances for a love marriage by marrying Vladimir in name only to gain her freedom.
• E. Major twists?
–Although Vladimir promises to marry Sonia in name only, he secretly loves her and pressures her to become his true wife. She has only considered him a friend and does not love him. In a moment of despair, when Sonia’s father dies, and she cannot procure the professorship anywhere in Europe or Russia she so dearly wants, she succumbs to his pressure, and a daughter is born.
• F. Reversals?
–Vladimir, a noted paleontologist, cannot support his wife and daughter as he desires. He abandons his scientific research to become a breadwinner and businessman, submitting to the expectations of the times that the husband is the only one to provide for his family financially. He dissuades Sonia from continuing her math research. A failure in business, he commits suicide.
• G. Character betrayals?
–Sonia’s mentor and the Rector at the University of Berlin have been lifelong friends. When the mentor teaches Sonia privately and petitions the Rector to grant Sonia a Ph.D. in Mathematics based on her three dissertations, the Rector is offended that his best friend would try to ruin the university’s reputation by teaching a woman, and their friendship is broken apart.
• H. Or any big surprises?
–Instead of waiting to be chosen as a professor, Sonia takes her fate into her own hands. She challenges the Math Director at a Swedish University with a bet: a full-time professorship with pay if she wins the Prix Bordin in Paris for solving a problem that has vexed mathematicians for 100 years. Shockingly, he accepts.
2. Make a list of any other things in your script that could interest a producer.
The story’s backdrop is the tumultuous history of Russia and Europe in the 19th century. The Tsar is assassinated, there is a revolution in France, the new Tsar exiles liberal professors from Russia, the Russian military inflicts cruelty on the citizens, terrorists disrupt communities, and new technologies disrupt economies.
