Karen Christine´s Character Depth

What I learned doing this assignment is that filling in these blanks led to ideas as well as connections and possible conflicts I had not thought of before.

The characters are: Oliver (father), Bettina (mother), Lori (teenager daughter) and Max (8 year old son)

Oliver (42)

Internal Character Depth

Motivation: wants
his whole family to have a relaxing vacation
Secret: hasn´t told
his wife, yet, that his big project of his company is in danger (maybe additionally
a loss, he invested in crypto and lost it all) – and therefore their financial
future
Wound: lost their
second child
Subtext: I owe you
something, because I was absent over a long time (to his wife and kids)
Layers: loves his
job, put being the one who is responsible for the whole family, since his
wife stayed at home to take care of their ill son, he feels more the
pressure than joy and fulfillment, often wants simply to run away

Conflict: wants to
keep his family safe, which he can´t in this cabin and the forest
Hidden Agenda: thought
that by investing in a trading company they all would be safe
Conspiracy: might
conspire with Lori to find the source of the threat
Intrigue: He is a
person that can stand a lot of pressure from outside, and still function,
but being confronted with his own fears leaves him vulnerable and nervous

Character Situation

Dilemma: feels the
urgent need to talk about all his fears, at the same time this would make the
trip and staying in the house even worse
Secret Identity: had
a short affair with an assistant which is already over, but he never
talked about it

Bettina (39)

Internal Character Depth

Motivation: Wants her
family and especially Max to have a good time in the woods
Secret: has had
feelings for her life coach which she tries to get rid of, but feels helpless,
only her best friend knows (and it will come out)
Wound: gives herself
the blame that she lost their second child (between Lori and Max), because
she did not stop training herself for a marathon
Subtext: I am guilty,
I am not worthy
Layers: is stronger
than she thinks she is, discovers her own strength facing her biggest fear

Conflict: would like
to close the gap she feels in her marriage while the coming death of Max
takes so much of her focus and energy

Character Situation

Dilemma: urgently
needs to relax and some sort of time-out, but cannot leave her family
alone right now, doesn´t want Max to day, but discovers herself thinking
sometimes that everything will be more relaxed and peaceful when he has
passed away

feels attractive and passionate in the presence of her life coach, wishes
the times back when she was studying and free

Lori (14)

Internal Character Depth

Motivation: No
motivation at all for this trip after a conflict she had with her
boyfriend shortly before they went on their way to the forest
Secret: she has a
web profile where she sells her own hand- and foot-pics, started this,
because she is a curious person, and found out it works …
Wound: her dying
brother, she loves him and doesn´t want to loose him, but he gained so
much love, support and attention during the last 2 years, that she is
often angry
Subtext: you don´t really
know me

Conflict: uses harsh
words and withdraws herself to hide her helplessness
Hidden Agenda: to
free the family from this threat – wherever it comes from, she will find it
Conspiracy: with Max,
he is he only one who knows that she sneaks out at night, this creates a new
bond between the two
Intrigue: her strength
and clarity at her young age is stunning and intriguing

Character Situation

Dilemma: would like
to run away from that trip on the first day (maybe she does, and they find
her, and bring her back), but feels this would make the situation for the
whole family worse
Secret Identity:
selling the pictures, playing with her “clients” who want to see more of
her body, which she won´t show, enjoying the might/power she has over them

Max (8)

Internal Character Depth

Motivation: to bring joy to his sister and family
though he will be facing death soon
Secret: he has taped some of their daily talks and
taken pictures which will be important one day
Wound: he doesn´t know who it is to die, and
though he´s playing cool on the outside, he sometimes would rather go out
of his body to avoid this experience
Subtext: I am your sunshine. Sorry that I am the
cause of your grief.
Layers: though he is a little boy he has made up
his mind a lot, seems like an adult in some ways

parents to suffer, but cannot change it
