Assignment 2
Subject: Marcus Wolf’s Intriguing Character Layers
This lesson taught me specific ways to create complexity in characters beyond what I have previously been doing. It also taught me that this complexity is necessary to make characters great.
Inner Circle Characters Intrigue items:
<div>Character Name: Harold
Godwinson</div><div>Role: Earl of East Anglia
</div>
Hidden agendas: Harold wants
his brother and any other obstacles out of the way in order to become the
Earl of Wessex after his father, Godwin. After he eventually achieves
this, he sets his sights on being King of England.Competition: Harold hates his
older brother Sweyn. He also sees potential in his younger brother Tostig
for trouble. Harold will come to recognize William as competition for the
English throne.Conspiracies: When King Edward
exiles the Godwins, Harold conspires with Godwin to raise an army of
mercenaries to fight King Edward for reinstatement or possibly to make
Godwin King. During the period of Sweyn’s banishment from England, Harold
conspired with his cousin Earl Beorn to keep Sweyn out of England.Secrets: Harold is unsure of
himself and hides this from everyone but his wife, Edith.Deception: Harold will do everything
he can to make Sweyn look bad in Godwin’s eyes. When the time comes,
Harold will betray his younger brother Tostig after being very close to Tostig
for years.Wound: Harold is constantly
overlooked and ignored by Godwin in favor of Sweyn, despite Sweyn being a
bad actor and Harold doing everything expected of him. Harold was hurt by
the murder of his cousin Beorn by Sweyn.Secret Identity: Harold comes
to think of himself as invincible.Character Name: William of
NormandyRole: Duke of Normandy
Hidden agendas: As William
secures his position in Normandy, he gets the idea that he could conquer
England.Competition: Count Geoffrey
Martel of Anjou, King Henry of France and other lesser Counts. Harold
Godwinson.Conspiracies: William marries
the daughter (Mathilda) of the powerful Count Baldwin V of Flanders. There
could come a time when William and Baldwin need to back each other against
King Henry.Secrets:
Deception:
Wound: Being a bastard. Many of
William’s rivals discount him as a duke because of his status as a
bastard. Some of them taunt him endlessly for it and some question his
legitimacy as Duke over their claims, because of it. William is particularly
wounded when his protector, King Henry I, turns on him and attacks.
William gives two of his uncles prestigious positions in Normandy and they
betray him.Secret Identity:
Character Name: King Edward
Role: King of England
Hidden agendas: Ill at ease in
England among a long established nobility, Edward would replace the major
magnates with men of his own choosing to consolidate his rule.Competition: Earl Godwin has
amassed great wealth and power under the previous three Kings. Godwin
pressured Edward to marry his daughter. Godwin is the competition.Conspiracies: He generally
conspires with Robert of Jumiege against Earl Godwin. He plays the great
Earls against one another despite them previously living together in peace
for 20 years. After Godwin’s return, Edward conspires with him to get rid
of Robert of Jumiege. He conspires with Harold to get rid of Tostig, who
had become an Earl and a friend of Edward.Secrets: Edward poisoned the
previous King (Harthecnut) to become King. Later, after exiling Earl Godwin
and his family, Edward sets his sights on the other great Earls. He wants
to rid England of the old guard and put all of his own men in.Deception: Edward deceives the great
northern Earls (Siward and Leofric). After calling on them to support him
against the rebellious Earl Godwin, he plans to remove them from power.Wound: Edward was exiled as a
very young man after his father (King Aethelred) and older half-brother
(King Edmund) were defeated by another conquering King (Cnut). He was
further wounded when his mother married King Cnut, had a son (Harthecnut)
and backed that son over Edward as candidate for King on the previous king’s
death. Edward is deeply wounded when his younger brother Alfred is murdered
by the men of a previous King (Harthecnut), which he blames on Godwin. He is
a bitter man who felt he was given his due too late in life.Secret Identity: Deep down,
Edward is still a poor exile living at the mercy of wealthy benefactors
who he is powerless repay. It informs his identity.Character Name: Godwin of
WessexRole: Earl of Wessex
Hidden agendas: A poorly hidden
agenda, but nevertheless, Godwin ultimately wants his family to run
England. He wants to be King or more likely one of his sons or certainly a
grandson.Competition: King Edward. Even
though Edward could not have become King without Godwin’s backing, he gives
no quid pro quo. Now Godwin’s candidates for Archbishop and lesser Earldoms
must compete with Edward’s choices.Conspiracies:
Secrets: Godwin was aware
that Edward murdered King Harthecnut and agreed to keep it secret and back
Edward’s rise to the throne.Deception:
Wound: Godwin is tortured by
the fact that his oldest son (Sweyn) has grown into a criminal. Sweyn
takes after Godwin’s father Wulfnoth, who had also behaved criminally and
who had gotten himself exiled from England. Godwin also never got over an
episode where he was ordered by a previous King (Harthecnut) to “punish”
the town of Worcester for revolting against unfair taxes. Godwin’s (and
Harthecnut’s) men burned the city down, in some cases with the buildings still
occupied.Secret Identity:

Kim’s Intriguing Character Layers
What I learned doing this assignment is…that coming up with these layers is hard work! But it really made me think hard about their motivations.
Character Name: Eric Howard
• Role: Husband with past lives, father to a child from his first wife, psychiatrist.
• Hidden agendas: He doesn’t understand why this is happening to him, doesn’t even know how to fix it, but more than anything he wants it to just go away and will do anything to pretend it doesn’t exist.
• Secrets: He hides his past lives/multiple personalities/Dissociative Identity Disorder from everyone, even from his wife.
• Deception: Although his personalities bleed through his calm exterior, he finds ways to manage them, even at the risk of self-harm.
• Wound: His past is a series of open wounds, starting from the very first time he ever fell in love…in 1865. His first soul: scarred from the inside out, a messy love triangle that shattered his life and destroyed the path of his fate.
• Secret Identity: Three identities within him, one soul that never reached maturity.
Character Name: Natalie Howard
• Role: Originally Eric’ patient, now his second wife.
• Hidden agendas: To fit into her neighborhood, she needs to fill the role of happy suburban stepmom. Her acting is superb.
• Competition: Feels competitive with their therapist, as if she and Krystal are both vying for Eric’s attention, although she doesn’t understand why.
• Conspiracies: She needs to fix this life that’s going down the same damn path all her other lives had traversed. But she needs Eric to cooperate. And he’s not willing to work on it with her. But maybe her therapist can help her, if they could just team up.
• Secrets: Suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder brought on by past lives and can’t quell it, so she embraces it, lets it mold her. Her personalities speak to her through messages left written on mirrors in lipstick, or spelled out as underlined phrases in books.
• Deception: She’s the Good Wife, the Amazing Stepmom, the Emphatic Yoga Instructor, everything’s perfect.
• Wound: Her soul aches; every love affair she has had throughout her past lives has ended in catastrophe. Her personalities hint that there’s a way to repair the damage, a way to escape, but she has work to do.
• Secret Identity: Three identities within her that correspond to Eric’s three…and then one violent one that shows up unexpectedly, the one that begins the domino effect.
Character Name: Krystal Nicholson
• Role: Therapist with past lives.
• Hidden agendas: To get in-between Eric and Natalie’s relationship, as she has done in all of their past lives, she is their Big Test.
• Competition: She enjoys the competition, has never had trouble getting any man to pay attention to her, to love her, to do bad things for her.
• Conspiracies: Pretends to go along with Natalie’s plans to help her get through to Eric, and tries to open Eric up like a clam.
• Secrets: This feeling that she belongs with Eric, that he is her destiny, won’t go away. But she can’t allow Nat and Eric to feel her need. And she can’t let them know that she, too, suffers from past lives/Dissociative Identity Disorder.
• Deception: She learns their secrets, knows what will break them, knows what will force them apart. Pretends to be on their side.
• Wound: In her past lives, starting from the love 1865 triangle, she never won Eric’s heart. She can get anyone she wants. Why can’t she have HIM?
• Secret Identity: Although she’s Nat’s therapist, she’s also her rival. And she will win Eric’s heart, even if it kills all three of them.

Assignment 2: Phyllis’ Intriguing Character Layers
I learned that the layers beneath a character’s surface are a valuable source of conflict and powerful plot points.
Sasha
Role: The EPA criminal investigator who was betrayed and dismissed.
Hidden Agendas: She wants to prolong the search for Duncan’s monsters until her three years are up and she receives her foundation money.
Competition: To reclaim her mission in life, she will compete with Delia, the newspaper reporter, her ex-boyfriend, her estranged father.
Conspiracies: with Duncan’s psychiatrist, but only when Sasha believes Duncan is becoming a danger to himself and others. With environmental activist love interest, plotting a major protest that will interfere with Duncan’s search for a particular monster.
Secrets: She doesn’t believe in Duncan’s monsters. She’s secretly sleeping with the newspaper reporter. Her father faded away shortly after divorcing her mother, and she feels abandoned by him.
Deception: She is pretending to believe in Duncan’s monsters. She lies to everyone she knows about what her work with Duncan really entails. She pretends she doesn’t want to see her estranged father who has re-emerged in her life.
Wound: Betrayed by the institution she believed in and her ex-boyfriend, as well as the childhood wound of being abandoned by her father, Sasha has a difficult time trusting others.
Secret Identity: Monster-slayer.
Duncan
Role: The black sheep of a family that controls an oil conglomerate who believes that climate change has spawned monsters that must be defeated.
Hidden Agendas: He is pursuing monsters spawned by climate change, as opposed to contributing to climate science and environmental activism.
Competition: He will compete with his sister Delia to prevent more climate change. He will compete with Sasha’s environmental activist love interest for her loyalty.
Conspiracies: He and Sasha conspire to teach her estranged father a lesson about using people for your own desires.
Secrets: His daughter died during a hurricane because Duncan arranged for a private Caribbean Island Sweet 16 party during hurricane season. He used to enjoy being the sports liaison for the oil company, acting like a playboy without a care in the world. He has battled a monster before but has no proof of its existence.
Deception: He is lying to everyone except Sasha about believing in monsters spawned by climate change. He is donating to politicians who believe in climate change so they can grant him access to information and locations that may hold clues to where to find the monsters.
Wound: Duncan’s ties to a company that has contributed to climate change for over a hundred years cause guilt, as does the death of his daughter. Deep down, he believes himself unworthy of redemption.
Secret Identity: The Knight who will save the planet.
Delia
Role: Duncan’s sister who is the CEO of the family-controlled oil conglomerate.
Hidden Agendas: To present her company as forward-thinking, combating climate change, promoting sustainability. To neutralize Duncan’s financial contributions to the cause of climate change.
Competition: with Duncan and with the media to control the image of her company. With Sasha to undermine Sasha’s attempt to indict her company.
Conspiracies: She conspires with her fixer and bankers to get around Duncan’s irrevocable trust and bankrupt him so that he cannot be a super-supporter of climate change activism. She also conspires with politicians she supports financially to convert sentences to fines.
Secrets: She and Duncan were best friends as children. She sabotaged her free-wheeling brother to look more irresponsible than he was, so their father would choose her to run the company. Her power marriage (to a woman) is falling apart, partly over her fierce devotion to the company.
Deception: She lies to the press, regulators and politicians about her goals of a negative carbon footprint and other sustainability factors. She covers up the fact that her company knew over 30 years ago that fossil fuels were contributing to climate change.

I learned that my characters did not completly fit my concept. I also learned that is using this model, they are starting to become three dimensional instead of just a name on a page. I still have a lot of work to do on them, but they are on their way to fitting the concept and to being much more interesting.Character 1: Anna (wife)
Motivation: She loves her husband dearly and relies on him for almost everything and needs to find him
Secret: she used to be a medium but stopped after a killer used her to find a victim
Wound: she never forgave herself for her bad judgement
Subtext: hides from her fear of being alone
Layers: she is a pet psychic now, she used to be a medium. She has extreme anxiety which keeps her from leaving the house. Thomas is the love of her life. She is honest and kind.
Conflict: she and her husband were having a fight when the accident occured.
Hidden Agenda: she has to practice being a medium again in order to find him
Conspiracy: she has to join forces with some powerful and ruthless forces in order to find Thomas
Intrigue: That there may be something beyond this life, murder, lies, deceit
Dilemma: If she does not become a medium again and use that power in horrible ways, she may never get Thomas back
Secret Identity: she was a powerful, ruthless queen in another life, in an ancient worldCharacter 2: Thomas (husband):
Motivation: He lives for Anna and their life together
Secret: He knows that there are other worlds beyond this one. He used that world to commit crimes in the past
Wound: One and only fight with his wife where he said some terrible things
Subtext: hides their connection to the dead from others
Layers: Lovrs Anna with all of his heart. SHe is his whole life. Runs a cafe and coffee shop. Has been a criminal in the past
Conflict: He has to deal with people and crimes from his old life
Hidden Agenda: He made deals many years ago with people who are now back in his life
Conspiracy: He has to find someone to help him get these people out of his life for good
Intrigue: He wanted to get Anna to use her powers to help him, but now it may be too late
Dilemma: Using Anna to get what he wants or possibly being killed
Secret Identity: He used to launder money for some local thugsCharacter1: Dominic (villian)
Motivation: To continue to live in his current form in this place. Money, power, he gets off on hurting others
Secret: He continues to get reincarnated in the same place and body. He also has a daughter that he cannot tell anyone about, because his enemies may hurt her
Wound: Father & uncle killed in front of him in a planned “accident”
Subtext: Hides the fact that he now hurts and kills people because he enjoys it
Layers: Traumatic past, criminal, ruthless hunter, enjoys killing and using people
Conflict: Thomas wants him dead, he has to make Thomas disappear
Hidden Agenda: Staying in his current life
Conspiracy: He needs to find someone who can help him-not sure who yet
Intrigue: Manipulating the rules of life and death. Ruthless use of power
Dilemma: He is going to have to kill Thomas or risk being killed/exposed
Secret Identity: slipped through from another life to the same place that he died-
So cool, Stacy, we are both introducing reincarnation in our scripts! It will be interesting to compare our ways of using it. 🙂 I love the idea of a medium quitting her career because someone abused her power.

Thank you Kimberly- it is a very new idea to me, so still trying to figure it all out! Will be interesting to see yours also!

Who is June Osborne? Where is her daughter and husband now? How will she deal as her memories come back to her?
How much does Emily know? How does she know there is an Eye where June lives? Who is the “Eye” and what is their agenda?
Who are the rest of “us”? Who is conspiring against the current government? How are they doing it under the radar?
How did this dystopia come to be? Who is in power behind the curtains?
This is a traumatized and wounded society and people. There are secrets lurking everywhere. Everyone is suppressed on some level and that makes them unpredictable as well.

At the Red Centre, Moira and June conspire to lure an Aunt away and rob her of her wardrobe in order for the both of them to escape. They deceive guards as they try to escape together as Moira dresses as an Aunt handling June.
June and the Commander and their secret Scrabble games
June has a hidden agenda when she asks the Commander what the Latin phrase is. She does not reveal where she’s read the saying. She has a secret agenda as she plays these games with him, trying to gain information from him to eventually use against him and this new order. Will he catch her doing this or will she get away with it. How much will he reveal to her, and in turn, to us?

Chantria’s Intriguing Character Layers for ‘Beyond Temple Walls’

Ahnee Broman’s Intriguing Character Layers
Assignment #2: IN SEARCH OF I AM
What I learned from doing this assignment is: That writing about real people is really hard because their path was not always pretty and it almost feels mean, like I am telling on them.
Rikki:
· Hidden agendas: Wants to be known and not just sit in the shadows of her siblings, yet at the same time her life seems to always revolve around them.
· Competition: Her true competition is the Rikki inside of her that will do anything for her siblings because that’s what makes her feel alive, loved and a part of something.

Deception: To think she can make a dent in the overall attorney fees or that the lawyer they hired is even capable of a case of this magnitude. Also for her to think that the decision to start stripping will not have a dire ramification in the trajectory of her life.

What I learned doing this assignment is that great characters have many layers both good and bad. As a writer I have to be willing to let my characters have a balance of a bad side and also an empathetic good side.

Nadine’s Intriguing Characters
What I learned is a whole lot more about my characters and the importance of creating a timeline for all the things that happen to them.
ASSIGNMENT 1:
In LOST, these are some of the places I saw Character Intrigue.
1) When Jack was confronted by his mother (in flashback) and told “Bring your father home.” But when Jack found him, he was dead and drunk in a back alley.
2) Kate’s intriguing scene was (in flashback) when she left her job for the old farmer and discovered a bounty hunter who was tailing them, pursuing them so recklessly that he caused the old man’s death.
3) Apparently Kate sees through Sawyer’s scams with vulnerable women and backs him away. Nevertheless, he gets Kate to kiss him for the cost of an asthma inhalant med for the pregnant girl.
2. Ways Character Intrigue is being used to create the need to see more episodes:
1) Based on the obvious wealth and status of Jack’s family, one wonders why Jack’s dad chooses to kill himself with booze.
2) We wonder why Kate was in handcuffs on the plane and she finally agrees to tell Jack. Then, when he changes his mind about hearing it, the need to see more is there.
3) During a flashback, when Sawyer is suddenly unable to take a couple’s money, he had just looked at their little boy. Later we discover Jack had a childhood memory of when his father similarly destroyed a family.
ASSIGNMENT 2
For Kuno and JAI, (your Inner Circle characters), fill in any Intrigue items that apply.
Character Name and Role:
Kuno is a Black kid who was told his father committed suicide. He is determined to prove he didn’t. Jai, a smart, pretty girl is drawn to Kuno but everybody seems to want to keep them apart.
Hidden agendas:
Following his Dad’s death, when he and his mom moved to a new town, Kuno presented himself as street smart when he was really a nerd. And because his mom wanted Kuno to stay away from Jai, she told the cops Kuno was trouble. Both of their plans backfired when he ended up in prison.
Jai also had a hidden agenda in that, because she believed Kuno was a street kid, she acted like one too. But when she was caught up in a crime and told: “Join the military or go to prison” (like Kuno), she joined. He didn’t have a choice.
Competition:
When Kuno first met Jai, they were at a highly competitive spelling bee and represented their respective schools. When they met again, a few years later, Kuno and his mom were living in a new town and Jai was a member of a group of street thugs; the ones who set Kuno up for a fall.
Conspiracies:
The big conspiracy was one in which a dirty cop (Andrew White) had shot Kuno’s dad, and believing he (Harold) was dead, Andrew fled the scene. However, Kuno’s mom (Monique), and Kuno’s granddad (Lionel), witnessed the shooting and decided to make it look like a suicide.
That way, the cop and the violent gang would not go after Kuno’s family; Lionel could get Harold into witness protection; the FBI would be able to take down the dirty cop and the gang at trial.
Meanwhile, Lionel, who was a wealthy, powerful man, arranged for Kuno to go to prison, where members of Lionel’s old organization could keep an eye on him. The plan was, once Kuno’s dad (Harold), had safely testified against the dirty cop and gang members, Kuno would be released and reunited with his dad. That backfired too when Kuno ended up causing the death of an inmate.
Secrets:
A big secret was that the dirty cop (Andrew), had raped Monique when she was only 14, so she gave the baby to her older, unmarried cousin, Charlotte. The baby was Jai.
Monique’s and Charlotte’s agreement was if Charlotte ever got pregnant, she would give her baby to Monique to raise. It happened. Monique raised Kuno. And every time Kuno and Monique got together, the two women tried to break them up… even though they were third cousins.
Deception:
Both Monique and Charlotte used deception to keep their secrets. But when Kuno and Jai kept finding each other, they had to make a decision.
Wound:
Monique’s wound was from being raped by the man who eventually became her husband’s partner in the police department. Kuno’s wound was his dad’s suicide.
Secret Identity:
Lionel’s secret identity was as the founder of the Black Panther Party. Kuno’s secret identity was that he was brilliant in STEM and wise beyond his years.

2. HOW CHARACTER INTRIGUE is being used to create the need to see more episodes.
– QUESTION ABOUT ANNA: Is she who she pretends to be?
We think she is remarkable (as described by the lawyer Todd and Vivian the journalist) but the Prosecutor and the judge want her locked in jail.
– QUESTION ABOUT VIVIAN: is she going to get a good story in time before the birth of her baby?

Hidden Agendas
Micky is really unhappy at being involved with the real Mafia. His main concern is making a boatload of money for him and his partner Howie. He’s hoping to help the Big 3 complete the Columbian trip so as to get a big cash bonus and lots of weed for Howie to deal for the both of them
Competition
Although he loves and is totally loyal to his partner, he feels that he must bring in more money than Howie
Secrets
His whole life is a secret now! His family knows that he is up to something but they don’t know what. He is also having to keep all his friends in the dark. He has been instructed to report(rat) on Matty if he’s partying too much. The big secret is that he will never rat on Matty because that is where his loyalty lies.
Deception

Wound

Role
Matty is the most important person in the whole Big 3 Crew. He is the person that goes to all the foreign countries, Columbia, Mexico, Lebanon. He is the real smuggler in the crew. He deals with growers in Columbia and Mexico. He deals with the military in Lebanon. He is also the person with all the connections to move any amount of product
Matty is the most important member of the Big 3 Crew. He is an idiot savant when it comes to smuggling and dealing. He is the one that actually travels to make the buys in Columbia, Mexico, and Lebanon.
Hidden Agendas
Matty wants to break away from the Big 3. He hates the way Stuey treats him. He also is always trying to keep the partners unaware of how much Cocaine he was buying and snorting while partying with hookers almost every night

Secrets
Matty is snorting way too much cocaine and fucking too many hookers. He is also partying too much with Johnny Naps who is the most vicious killer in the Torrio Crew. Deception
Matty has many different personas. In Brooklyn he is Matty. In Columbia he is Mateo. He also has to tell lies and embellish the truth all the time
Wound
Matty has always had an inferiority complex. He was picked on as a kid because of his weird looks and behavior. His family life was really fucked up. It doesn’t help that Stuey talks to him like he is a moron and a subordinate instead of the most important person in the Big 3 Crew.

Secrets
The biggest secret is that Stuey and Tony scammed Matty into partnering with them for protection by staging a break in and robbery at Matty’s apartment. During that break in Stuey hits Matty in the stomach with the butt of his rifle. He then kicks him in the face so as to make sure that Matty would be terrified. This way Matty would run to Tony for protection.
Deception

Wound
Stuey wants to really be Italian not Jewish. He knows as a Jew he could never become a made man by the Mafia
4) Anthony”Tony” Fortunado
Role
He is the third partner of the Big 3 crew. He is the crews only Italian. He is handsome and very smooth. Everybody loves Tony.
Hidden Agendas
Tony is always defending Matty from Stuey. He doesn’t like the way Stuey speaks to Matty or himself. Tony was friends with Matty before Stuey talked him into staging a break in and robbery at Matty’s house. That’s how they got Matty to partner with them
Competition
He feels that he is always in a competition with both Stuey and Matty to prove his value
Secrets
Tony is making sure that Matty knows that he is still a close friend and not just a partner. In the back of his head as much as he loves Stuey, he wants to make sure that if he wants to split with him, that Matty will stay with him. Matty is the key to all of the Big 3’s wealth and profits
