    David Chai's Character Emotions

    What I learned doing this assignment is how complicated and 3 dimensional you can make your characters by building an emotional profile.

    SUCCESSION

    KENDALL ROY

    • A. Situational: Hope / Fear – Hopes to inherit the company / Fears his dad will stay on.
    • B. Motivation: Want / Need – Wants to be the man / Needs validation from his dad.
    • C. Mask: Base Negative Emotion / Public Mask – Deeply insecure / Wants to be perceived as someone in control.
    • D. Weaknesses – Is not really sure of himself. Prone to emotional decisions. Still loves his ex-wife, even as she doesn't want to be married to him.
    • E. Triggers – Loss of control.
    • F. Coping Mechanism – Drug addiction.

    LOGAN ROY

    • A. Situational: Hope / Fear – hopes his son and children can be trusted to take over his company / fears his son and children will destroy his company.
    • B. Motivation: Want / Need – Wants to stay in control. / needs to learn to be supportive as a father.
    • C. Mask: Base Negative Emotion / Public Mask – Fears losing control / presents a public mask of a mogul still in full control.
    • D. Weaknesses – body is failing, his mental capacity is wavering.
    • E. Triggers – Any sign of weakness from his children makes him angry.
    • F. Coping Mechanism – Anger and emotional abuse of his children.

    TOM WEBGAMS

    • A. Situational: Hope / Fear – hopes to marry Shiv and also to become a trusted member of the family / fears his humble beginnings will mean he is never truly accepted.
    • B. Motivation: Want / Need – wants to be accepted / needs to find his own confidence.
    • C. Mask: Base Negative Emotion / Public Mask – insecurity / pretends to be part of the high born family even if he isn't.
    • D. Weaknesses – insecure, can be unfiltered.
    • E. Triggers – anyone who brings up his humble background.
    • F. Coping Mechanism – sarcastic and biting humor.

    Tom’s Character Emotions
    Doing this assignment, I learned exposing emotions makes characters transparent.
    24 – Jack:
    • A. Situational: Hopes to get back with Kim / Fears Kim will divorce him..
    • B. Motivated to get Kim to forgive him / Needs to breakup with Nina.
    • C. Mask, Base Negative Emotion: guilt for sex with Kim/ Public Mask: Cool Pro
    • D. Weaknesses: Needs to be a better father to his daughter
    • E. Triggers: Gary tries to shut Jack up about his theft.
    • F. Coping Mechanism: Proving to Kim he no longer has sex with Nina.

    Nina:
    • A. Situational: Hopes Jack will divorce Kim / Fears he will never leave Kim.
    • B. Motivation: Wants Jack to divorce Kim / Needs to find another man.
    • C. Mask – Base Negative Emotion = fears Jack doesn’t want her / Public Mask= Cool Pro
    • D. Weaknesses: She’s in love with Jack.
    • E. Triggers: Kim calls to see if she and Jack are no longer attracted to each other.
    • F. Coping Mechanism: She grows closer to daughter Kim.

    Gary:
    • A. Situational: Hope / Fear: Hopes Jack will not save Palmer/Fears he’ll get caught.
    • B. Motivation: Want / Need: Wants to keep the money he stole.
    • C. Mask: Base Negative Emotion / Public Mask: Fears getting caught/All is cool.
    • D. Weaknesses: Fears getting caught.
    • E. Triggers: Jack’s suspicions about him.
    • F. Coping Mechanism: Pretending everything is okay.

    TERRIBLE SWIFT SWORD – Sara:
    • A. Situational: Hopes to find a cure / Fears Ratkin lies to her.
    • B. Motivated to save her mother from the disease / Needs to breakup with Matt.
    • C. Mask: Base Negative Emotion: Fears losing Matt/ Public Mask: All is cool.
    • D. Weaknesses: Taking too much care of her mother.
    • E. Triggers: Ratkin demands she marry him.
    • F. Coping Mechanism: Being with Matt whenever she can.

    Ratkin:
    • A. Situational: Hope / Fear: Hopes to survive Afghans/Fears he’ll lose the election.
    • B. Motivation: Want / Need: Wants to keep the money he stole/Needs to believe he’s cool.
    • C. Mask: Base Negative Emotion / Public Mask: Fears getting caught/All is cool.
    • D. Weaknesses: Fears getting caught.
    • E. Triggers: Matt asking too many questions.
    • F. Coping Mechanism: Keeping a lid on his fearful emotions.
