Lesson 5: The Character Journey
What I learned from doing this assignment is…
I am just developing these characters and getting to know them so this is some bare bones of what’s to take place.
For each of your main characters, create a 3-Act Structure of their journey
PODCASTER 1 TRU
Beginning: Alpha female of the 2-person podcast. Thinks she has all the facts (hence her name is Tru). Trusting that nothing bad is really going to happen to her and if it does someone will come to her rescue.
Turning Point: Decides to bring on someone with entirely different views than theirs thinking they can probably sway him their way.
Midpoint: Meets and has on their podcast guest
Turning Point 2: Conversation gets heated
Dilemma: Podcast live shuts off along with all electrical devices. AirBnB home is not completely equipped for such an emergency.
3rd Act Climax: Has to make a decision whether or not she will work with the guest for survival
Ending: is humbled and changed by the experience. Her perspective is taking a turn.
PODCASTER 2 JENN
Beginning: Walks on eggshells a bit with her co-host not wanting to rock the boat.
Turning Point: Decides she is going to stand up to her cohost and have a serious discussion about her place on the podcast and if they should move forward together.
Midpoint: Meets and has on their podcast guest
Turning Point 2: Conversation gets heated
Dilemma: Podcast live shuts off along with all electrical devices. AirBnB home is not completely equipped for such an emergency.
3rd Act Climax: Her relationship is discovered with the producer once something happens to him.
Ending: Able to “stand on her own two feet”
PODCAST GUEST PAUL
Beginning: Doesn’t see much use in reaching across the aisle and trying to understand opposite views.
Turning Point: Decides to take on a bet and go out of his comfort zone and attend a podcast in a remote desert location with hosts that have opposite views.
Midpoint: Arrives to the location of the podcast live session and meets the hosts in person
Turning Point 2: Conversation gets heated
Dilemma: Podcast live shuts off along with all electrical devices. AirBnB home is not completely equipped for such an emergency.
3rd Act Climax: Has to decide whether he should care about these women enough to help them out and work together. Admits he is there because of a bet.
Ending: Believes that people can be capable of change

Turning Point 2: He sees Alfredo wants them dead. He and Elaine team up against Alfredo.
3rd Act Climax: He wonders if Elaine is teasing him. Who is the meany: Elaine and Alfredo?
Ending: Elaine sees Alfredo is a thief. He threatens her. Gus fights Alfredo. Elaine and Gus swim away. Alfredo chases them in a Zodiac. They dive underwater to escape.
Beginning: ALFREDO puts a mickey in Elaine and Gus’ drinks. Takes them on the boat.
Turning Point: Elaine and Gus listen to his sad story.
Midpoint: Elaine and Gus let him be their leader.
Turning Point 2: He threatens them with a gun if they don’t obey him.
Dilemma: Elaine must choose between believing him or swimming back to the port.
3rd Act Climax: She slugs Alfredo. Swims to shore. Natives attack. She swims back to the boat.
Ending: He won’t let her back into the boat. She yells for help. Gus slugs Alfredo. Elaine and Gus return safely to the port.
Beginning: ELAINE wakes up in the boat, sees the other two. How did they got here?
Turning Point: She discovers a submarine hauls their boat. Where the hell to?
Midpoint: She scuba dives onto the submarine. Gus and Alfredo return her to the boat.
Dilemma: She can’t decide: Should she escape with Alfredo or Gus?
Turning Point 2: She sees Alfredo poisons their food. Prepares to fight him.
3rd Act Climax: She slugs Alfredo. Swims to shore. Natives chase her back into the water.

Aurora’s Characters’ Journeys.
I learned that when writing a series, following various main characters over a number of different episodes, has more room for different turning points and climaxes. In other words, a particular person’s turning point may be in a totally different part of the entire story than another person. Also events are more or less significant or climatic to a given character depending on who they are as it may affect them entirely differently.
1.THEOPHILUS CATO– A battle hardened Centurion
Beginning: He is proud of his loyalty to Tiberius, and also loyalty to his family of Jewish slaves, although doesn’t believe in their god.
Turning Point: He discovers Jews are not safe in Rome and he may be required to spy on Tiberius so accepts assignment to Palestine to find an insurrectionist that’s been prophesied to overthrown the Roman empire.
Midpoint: in Galilee, he is surrounded by rebellion, but he is placed under house. His beloved slave Philip is poisoned but healed by an itinerant Jewish teacher. He discovers the slaves are his relatives, and he makes Philip his heir.
Dilemma: He begins to think this gentle loving healer is the prophesized Jewish messiah, especially as contrasted with the disgusting power hungry people he meets, but can’t bring himself to turn him in since he saved Philip.
Turning Point Two: He goes undercover to escape his house arrest to go to Jerusalem and report on the healer, but is attacked and left for dead by a Levite (Jacob Bar Abbas) that he thought was a close friend.
3rd Act Climax: He is rescued by a Samaritan. He survives to get Bar Abbas arrested as a rebel leader, but is unsuccessful turning himself in as an insurrectionist.
Ending: Corrupt Local leaders play havoc with the rules and release Bar Abbas, killing instead the healer, who is resurrected.
2.PHILIP-an openly rebellious slave.
Beginning: A talented runner, he is frustrated by discrimination in Rome against Jews, so sides with Jewish rebels
Turning Point: His family Seder is attacked, so his master is taking them to Palestine.
Midpoint: In Palestine he discovers the Jews don’t accept him because he is mixed race. He meets Daniel, a depressed Ethiopian official Jewish, also a slave who struggles with some of the same questions about having a life of significance.
Turning Point Two: He barely survives a poisoning and decides to follow his healer to Jerusalem, where he sees him crucified and then resurrected.
Dilemma: What is a life of significance? Is it better to serve or be served? Philip works like a slave to help the widows in the church.
3rd Act Climax: Philip becomes an evangelist and meets up with the Samaritan that saved Theo’s life.
Ending- Philip runs along the road to catch up with Daniel’s chariot, to show him that the prophesized messiah was a suffering servant, just like themselves.
3. HANNAH– overbearingly but loyal Jewish slave
Beginning: Hannah is very controlling and tightly wound about her son situation but has a big heart.
Turning Point: Attack at the Seder. Theo takes all of the slaves to Palestine.
Midpoint: Her son is poisoned and healed. She confesses her secret about being a relative of Cato.
Turning Point Two: Cato is attacked by a friend and almost dies.
Dilemma: Should she tell Cato about the blackmail or not?
3rd Act Climax: She confesses her guilty secret over Cato’s deathbed and prays for healing. Miraculously he is healed.

Tom’s Character Journeys!
What I learned doing this assignment is that by continuously examining what my characters will do at each point of the their journey, I’m discovering new story elements that I hadn’t thought of before.
For each of your main characters, create a 3-Act Structure of their journey.
Alex:
Beginning: Alex, driving his electric all wheel drive SUV, pulls into Kris’ driveway. They venture out into unplowed streets. They are headed to the hospital as Alex is an ER physician and Kris is a Physician’s assistant. The hospital is short on staff and they’re both needed immediately.
Turning Point: Alex loses his sense of direction in the blinding snow, then realizes he’s low on his charge. There are no charging stations except at the hospital.
Midpoint: Alex’s SUV becomes stuck in a snowbank. Alex climbs into the back of the SUV and retrieves a flare; he get out of the car, but drops the matches in the snow. He’s unable to get the flares lit. He becomes enraged when Kris informs him that neither of their cell phones can get a signal.
Turning Point 2: Alex learns that Kris is low on insulin and believes that he has to go out into the blizzard to find help. Kris insists on staying inside the vehicle, with that being their best chance at survival. Alex ignores Kris and gets out of the vehicle, disappearing into the blinding snow.
Dilemma: Alex faces two dilemmas: first dilemma is whether or not to leave Kris in the car, alone, in order to find help. His second dilemma occurs when he discovers a school building and decides to break in through a window. The storm intensifies and he must decide between staying in a warm place and surviving or returning to the blizzard to find Kris, where he could die in the process.
3rd Act Climax:
Alex crawls through the blinding snow, as he appears to search for his SUV, after leaving the school. He collapses in a snow bank.
Ending:
Alex appears at Kris’ hospital bed, but is it really Alex or Kris’ dream?
Kris:
Beginning: Kris gets into Alex’s Suv. She warns him to take it slow, but Alex convinces her that they’ll be fine in his all wheel drive SUV.
Turning Point: Kris Realizes that she has a limited supply of insulin, and that Alex doesn’t have any energy bars or food of any kind in his vehicle. She berates Alex for not having energy bars in his vehicle and continues to argue that their best chance at survival is to stay inside the vehicle.
Midpoint: When their vehicle becomes stuck in the snowbank, Kris attempts to get a signal on both of their cell phones, but is unable to do so.
Turning Point 2: Kris does her best to convince Alex to stay in the vehicle and wait for help, but he ignores her pleads and disappears into the blinding snow.
Dilemma: Kris must decide whether or not to stay in the vehicle alone where she can stay warm, or go with Alex into the blizzard where she feels she could die.
3rd Act Climax: Kris shivers, then struggles to keep her eyes open, alone and freezing in the “dead” SUV, as the vehicle has had no power for quite some time.
Ending: Kris gets rescued by first responders and ends up in an ICU bed at the hospital. She looks up and sees Alex at the side of her bed, but then we see her asleep. When she opens her eyes, Alex is gone.
