    INT. BAR – EVENING

TRENT and ROBERT, both mid thirties men, suited, suave, stand at the bar and toast.

    TRENT

You know Robert, taking Suzanne down is going to change your life.

    ROBERT

Hey, I know who to side with. You, Trent buddy, have it all. Talent, wealth, and a way with the ladies! I want to be just like you.

    They both laugh.

    ROBERT (CONT’D)

    (yelling to the bar)

    I love this guy!

    ROBERT (CONT’D)

    (to Robert)

Did you see Suzanne’s face when I told Mr. Owen about her relationship with his brother?

    TRENT

I sure did. It was priceless. I never saw such an expression on a CEO’s face.

    ROBERT

Oh, and when I passed around that she was a coke-head, no one could believe it! I couldn’t believe it when you told me! Don’t worry, I left your name out of it completely.

    TRENT

    I appreciate that.

    ROBERT

    We got each other’s backs.

Robert elbows Trent. Trent looks down at the place he was elbowed and looks at Robert.

They both look over to the door. Someone has just come in. It’s Suzanne, and she’s with a bunch of co-workers. She waves and Trent waves back.

    ROBERT (CONT’D)

    What’s she doing here?

    TRENT

Looks like she’s here to have a drink with her co-workers.

    ROBERT

But, she’s out. I outted her!

    TRENT

Did you really? What did you do?

Robert points over at Suzanne’s table.

    ROBERT

I made sure that everyone knew what she was up to! Fraternization and drugs are not company policy!

    Robert turns toward Suzanne’s table.

    ROBERT (CONT’D)

    (yelling)

You’re not messing with my head! It’s policy! I just pointed it out!

    TRENT

You know what else is not company policy? Spreading gossip and making unfounded accusations.

    ROBERT

But they’re not unfounded. You know it’s the truth!

    TRENT

Do I? I don’t know any such thing.

    ROBERT

You told me all about it and…

    TRENT

…what did I tell you, Robert.

    ROBERT

You said that she was having an affair with…and that she was snorting coke!

    TRENT

…You need to take responsibility for your actions, Robert.

    ROBERT

Wait a minute. Are you? Oh no, you don’t. I’m going to Mr. Owen.

    Trent smiles and leans in.

    TRENT

    (whispering)

You think he’s going to believe you over me? You have a history of spreading gossip. You did this to yourself. You see that, don’t you?

    Trent finishes drink.

    TRENT (CONT’D)

I invited you here to give you your pink slip, and your last paycheck.

Trent hands him an envelope. Robert takes it disbelievingly.

    ROBERT

    You son of a…

Trent waves over at Suzanne and points to the back.

    TRENT

    (yelling)

Hitting the head! I’ll be right over!

    Trent turns to Robert.

    TRENT (CONT’D)

It’s time to go, Robert. Don’t embarrass yourself anymore than you have already. Suzanne just has more to offer me. No hard feelings?

Trent turns and heads back to the restroom.

Robert clenches the envelope before letting it fall to the ground. Fury overtakes him. He notices the bartender is turned away and grabs a full bottle by the handle…

    …And follows Trent.

EXT: HIGHSCHOOL FOOTBALL FIELD – FALL DAY

ROBERT – High school Junior – tall – Lean – Athletic – good looking – Plays quarterback

TRENT – High school Junior – average height – strong build – average looking – Plays running back

The High school football team just won their last game of the season and it give them an undefeated season with the opportunity to go to the State finals.

The High school scoreboard on the field show the team wins 21-17 and a celebration on the field begins with band music and cheer leaders as they celebrate the accomplishment.

Robert smiles as he high fives, thumbs up, his teammates and shakes the coaches hand.

Trent move towards him. Trent’s uniform is clean, no grass stains or dirt while the rest of the team is dirty.

    Trent high fives Robert.

    ROBERT

    (to Trent)

    Great game.

    (to the team)

Great game guys. First time our High School has had a perfect season. Couldn’t have done it without you guys.

The team files into the locker room.

    INT: LOCKER ROOM – DAY

Trent breaks from the team and moves to the trainers room. He motions to Robert to come over. Robert sees him and walks over.

Trent closes the door behind him

    ROBERT

We did it buddy. Perfect season.

    TRENT

Maybe you can explain it to me.

    ROBERT

    Explain what?

    TRENT

Why the hell you did get me the ball.

    ROBERT

The ball? What are you talking about?

    TRENT

We’ve been friends and teammates for several years. You know how good we play together.

    ROBERT

Of course, you’ve been a great help getting us donations for uniforms and new equipment. This uniform I’m wearing is a result of your work.

    Robert looks bewildered.

    TRENT

Didn’t I catch that winning touchdown pass last year that got us in the State finals?

    ROBERT

    Yeah, that was last year.

    TRENT

I ran prefect routs today, was open I don’t know maybe a dozen time but you never got me the ball.

    Robert still looks bewildered.

    TRENT

Are you trying to get me kicked off the team? I mean, all season I maybe caught 2 or 3 passes from you.

    ROBERT

I don’t understand. We won today. It was a team effort not just one persons lust for glory.

    TRENT

You have been trying to get me cut from the team, haven’t you. Passing the ball to Kripke and Donaldson. Even our Full Back has caught more passes than I have.

    Trent moves up to Robert.

    ROBERT

    (steps back)

You know I’m not the greatest quarterback and I have to use everyone on the team to win.

    TRENT

    (keeps moving towards him)

So that’s it. Use everyone else and not your old friend Trent. We got what we needed from Trent now let’s let kick him out.

    ROBERT

No, Trent you got it all wrong.

Trent rages as he tackles Robert to the floor. Trent punches him in the head and elbows him in the ribs, He gets on top of him and punches Robert in the face over and over.

The team overhears the ruckus and busts into the room to break up the two.

INT. ROBERT’S TAVERN – LATE NIGHT
Trent shakes of the cold as he eyes the bar area. A crowd hangs back giving air to the art exhibit.
Trent glides behind the crowd, eyes searching.
He finds a shadowy corner and leans in. Scanning the crowd, looking for one person: Monica.
    There she is.
ON MONICA: Monica and Robert exit the corridor leading to the back: The kitchen, restrooms, office and back exit.
He shows no reaction as he watches.
Through the shifting bodies and he can see them standing close. Then Robert puts a phone to his ear. Monica watches him expectantly.
The phone call ends. Robert takes her hand. Kisses her cheek.
ON TRENT: He raises his chin. His expression hardening.
ON MONICA: She smiles a smile of relief. She walks into the corridor again.
Robert moves through the crowd. Smiling. Shaking hands. Trying to hide that needy look in his eye.
ON TRENT: He pushes himself through the crowd, nodding curly as he brush arms, or taps a shoulder.
He finds Robert engaged with an elderly man. Trent approaches. Robert laughs and moves the elderly man deeper into the crowd. They discuss one of the paintings on the wall.
Trent holds back, avoiding eye contact with others in the crowd until . . .
Robert moves. Trent jumps. Takes Roberts arm.
    TRENT
    Hey! Robert. How are you?
    ROBERT
Oh, Hi Trent. Glad you could make it.
    TRENT
Looks like a great turn out. Where’s Monica?
    ROBERT
Ladies room. Ya know, she dropped a lot of money getting ready for the show and she’s feeling the pressure. I told her not to worry, that you’d help her out.
    TRENT
Of course, of course. I’ll always take care of my girl. By the way, has Hastings or that art critic fellow,
    (pause, snaps fingers)
    Bellows shown up yet?
    ROBERT
No, not yet. I did try to reach Bellows at his publication and they said he had another engagement tonight and that he’d probably be late.
    Trent stares. Hiding . . . What?
Robert smiles. He extends his hand to nearby couple.
    ROBERT
Ah, Mr. And Mrs. Taggert. I’m so pleased you could make it tonight. Allow me to introduce you to Trent Harlow. He’s the man responsible for tonight’s show.
    Trent shakes their hands.
    MRS. TAGGERT
It’s so nice to meet you, Mr. Harlow.
    TRENT
    Oh, please. Call me Trent.
    MR. TAGGERT
Robert here tells us you’re providing the financing for the Boettcher Concert Hall remodel. We’re very good friends with Tony and Margaret Boettcher.
Trent flashes a look at Robert.
    ROBERT
Excuse, I need to attend to something.
Robert moves away. Trent smiles, but keeps an eye on Robert.
He watches as Robert approaches two, large men wearing black suits.
    TRENT
That’s nice to know. I haven’t met them. I’ve been dealing with their attorney.
    MRS. TAGGERT
    Oh yes, Tony’s son, Gab.
Trent’s eyes widen as Monica comes his way.
ON MONICA: She breezes through the crowd, smiling, shaking hands.
ON TRENT: He extends a hand to her. She hesitates taking it.
    TRENT
Allow me to introduce the very talented Monica Schaefer.
    MR. TAGGERT
    Beautiful work, Ms. Schaefer.
She shakes there hands. Trent keeps a hand on her back.
    MRS. TAGGERT
    Yes, you’re an amazing painter.
    MONICA
Thank you so much. I appreciate you being here.
    MRS. TAGGERT
Trent here was just telling us about his part in the Boettcher remodel.
    MONICA
Yes, he does have his fingers in many pies.
    MRS. TAGGERT
I for one can’t wait to see it finished. We’ll have to arrange a luncheon with the Boettchers. They would love to meet Ms. Schaefer. Don’t you think so, Trent.
    MONICA
That would be so lovely. Thank you Mr. And Mrs. Taggert.
    TRENT
    And, please, call her Monica.
Robert steps in next to Trent.
    ROBERT
Excuse me. Would you allow me to steal Trent for a bit.
Everyone nods as Robert pulls TRent away. Monica keeps her eyes on the Taggerts.
    ROBERT
Do you see the guys in maroon blazer just over my left shoulder.
    Trent glazes and nods.
    ROBERT
I have it on very good authority that he’s about to drop a load of cash on a new gallery downtown. I thought you might be interested.
    TRENT
    I would. Thanks.
    Robert turns to the man.
    ROBERT
Mr. Malone. May I introduce you to Mr Harlow. The gentlemen I mentioned earlier.
    MALONE
Nice to meet you Mr. Harlow.
    TRENT
    Thank you. You as well.
    ROBERT
And, gentlemen, may I suggest the use of the beer garden out back. The lower decibel level may help with the business conversation.
The men nod and follow Robert through the crowd.
EXT. BACK ALLEY – LATE NIGHT
The three men step out the back door. Robert first, then Trent, then Malone.
Robert steps to the side. Trent surveys the area.
    THERE IS NO BEER GARDEN.
Trent turns around. Malone’s friendly demeanor is gone.
    MALONE
For her entire life, she’s been a loner. A do-it-yourselfer. Always trying to make it on her own. Honey, I told her, just be careful. There’s a lot of losers out there.
Other than that, I’ve let her do things her way.
One of the big guys from earlier steps out from the shadows.
    MALONE
Now, I can appreciate a man looking to make a buck. Run a con, even chase down a piece of ass.
Trent steps back, and backs into the second big guy from earlier.
    NOWHERE TO GO.
Trent steps forward in a threatening manner.
    TRENT
I think you got your wires crossed, pal.
The big one behind him pulls Trent back.
    MALONE
But I will not tolerate a guy like you, with two hundred dollars in his checking account ruining my niece’s life.
Malone nods. The big guy behind slams his fist into Trent’s kidney.
    Trent drops to his knees.
TRENT’S P.O.V: He watches the feet of the other big come forward. He looks up to see a fist coming his way.

    INT. HOTEL BAR

Robert and Trent stand at the hotel bar drinking beers.

    TRENT

So, you’ve done a hook-up on Instagram before?

    ROBERT

Sure — all the time. The babes love me.

    TRENT

    Then you know the drill.

    ROBERT

Been there, done that. Got the steam card in my pocket. If she looks the same as advertised the money is as good as yours.

    TRENT

You like them young, don’t you.

    ROBERT

    Don’t we all.

    TRENT

    And blonde.

    ROBERT

    Guilty as charged.

    TRENT

You know the rules right? Nothing kinky. No bondage or pain. If she says stop you stop. Agreed.

    ROBERT

Of course — do I look like a guy who would hurt a woman. What do you take me for some low-life?

    TRENT

No, you look cool — but you never know looks can be deceiving.

    ROBERT

Tell me about it. That’s why I don’t pay until I can see the merchandise in person. Nothing like expecting a Mercedes and winding up with dump truck. You get my drift right?

    TRENT

My sentiments exactly. She’s a sweet young thing and I think she might surprise you.

    ROBERT

    I love surprises.

    TRENT

Good. She likes to exceed expectations — giving her clients more than they bargained for.

    ROBERT

    That’s music to my ears.

    TRENT

    Let’s get going then.

Trent raises his glass for a toast.

    TRENT

    To an awesome night. Cheers!

Robert raises his glass and clinks Trent’s glass.

    ROBERT

    Cheers!

Trent and Robert exit the bar.

    INT. HOTEL HALLWAY

Trent unlocks the room door with the keycard and motions for Robert to enter first.

    INT. HOTEL ROOM

    ROBERT

    Where is she?

    TRENT

    Who?

    ROBERT

Tiffany. Who the hell do you think I’m talking about.

    TRENT

She left, she decided you weren’t her type.

    ROBERT

What the fuck is this a shakedown?

    TRENT

No, I would call it retribution. Her friend Sandy told Tiffany what you were really like.

    ROBERT

    Who the hell is Sandy?

    TRENT

    You don’t remember Sandy?

    ROBERT

No, of course not. Why should I remember some hook-up named Sandy that never happened?

    TRENT

Because she remembers you. After you screwed her last month you said she was a bad girl and needed to be punished. You spanked her so hard you left her butt and thighs black and blue. Then when she fought back you punched her in the face giving her a swollen jaw and black eye.

    ROBERT

That wasn’t me — you got the wrong guy.

    TRENT

It was you all right — she sent me the pic you exchanged with her on Instagram. The one where you were in your boxers — flexing your pecs and biceps.

    ROBERT

Okay, it was an accident. She said she was into spanking and things got carried away. I didn’t mean to punch her in the face.

Trent takes a step toward Robert.

    TRENT

And this is an accident too.

Trent gut punches Robert and he doubles over. Trent then karate chops him in the back of the neck sending him to the floor. Robert curls up on the floor groaning in agony. Trent kneels down and takes Robert’s wallet from his back pocket removing the steam card and cash.

    TRENT

Since you appear to be genuinely sorry, I’m sure you won’t mind making a small contribution to pay for her medical bills.

    Trent gets up.

    ROBERT

You sonofabitch — you’ll pay for this!

Trent kicks Robert in the gut. Robert groans in agony.

    TRENT

Sandy told me to kick you in the balls but I told her that wasn’t a guy thing.

    ROBERT

Don’t think this is over. I know people. You’ll get yours.

    TRENT

I don’t see why you are taking this so hard. I thought you said you liked surprises.

Trent gives Robert a mock salute goodbye and exits the room.

Robert & Trent are among several college students in their last year majoring in IT who are interns at a nearby international company.

Trent overhears the company bigshot saying he plans to hire the best one of the interns after they graduate and right now, he has his eye on Robert.

Trent really wants that job but knows Robert is the obvious choice – unless he can screw things up for him – and make himself look good.

Robert & Trent are assigned desks next to each other to work with Mrs.Mitchell, the secretary in charge of Customer Services, including incoming responding to enquiries about company services and other public email communications.

    MRS MITCHELL

Robert & Trent, Here’s what I want each of you to do today – prepare responses for the emails received on your desk computers, asking for a list of our services, but don’t reply to them until I have a chance to review your work. My boss, Mr. Bellville, wants a copy of them all later.

    ROBERT

Sounds good. I will get right on it.

    TRENT

Me too. I know this is an important part of the business for Mr. Belville.

Once Robert has the list of emails he’s been assigned, he gets to work, first compiling a numbered list and description of each service the company offers, to use in reply to the sender in each category. Then he checks out each email, making notes of the sender’s topics of interest that needs a response.

Meanwhile, Trent is meticulously preparing each email as he reads it, one at a time, and has a bunch ready to send once they get the okay from Mrs. Mitchell.

    TRENT

Hey Robert, how’s it going for you, how many emails have you got ready?

    ROBERT

OH, none yet, I’ve just made a numbered list of the company’s services. I’m making a list of each customer’s interests, so I can send info quickly to all of them once I’ve completed the list.

    TRENT

Gosh, I’m ready for a break. Wanna stop and get a cup of coffee?

    ROBERT

Sure, there’s always a pot on in the break room.

    TRENT

I have to make a pit stop first.

    ROBERT

Okay, I’ll see you at the break room.

Trent starts towards the restrooms, but quickly turns back to their desks, grabs his
Flash drive and copies and uploads all Robert’s files to it, then hurries to the break room.

    ROBERT

I poured you a cup of coffee, but it’s probably cold by now.

    TRENT

Thanks. No worries, I can refresh it, then we oughta head back before Mrs Mitchell comes by.

    ROBERT

Yes I still have to complete reviewing the emails and then writing responses. How far have you got to go?

    TRENT

Just about got them in the right order. I am working on a way to speed it all up. I’ll show you after Mrs Mitchell has a look at them first, in case she wants any changes.

Robert and Trent go to their desks and get busy working on their assignments. Mrs. Mitchell comes back and sees them concentrating on their computers.

    Mrs. Mitchell

Hi guys, how’s it going. Got anything ready for me to look over from the list I gave each of you?

    TRENT

Hello Mrs. Mitchell, yes, I do have it ready, before I give it to you I want your opinion about this method that I thought could save the company’s time.

    MRS MITCHELL

Sure, let me see what you’ve done.

    TRENT

Here’s all the names you gave me. I put them in three separate category lists:

All the ones that had all the same general information requests, all the ones that had the same specific question, and those that had an individual question. I wrote a standard, personalized note that suits them all.

    MRS. MITCHELL

Good thinking! Now, email them to me while I go see what Robert has ready for me.

Mrs. Mitchell heads over to the other desk, where Robert is concentrating on the screen.

    MRS MITCHELL

    Hi Robert, how it going?

    ROBERT

Fine, I’m not quite finished yet, but will be done in a few minutes. If you’d like to take a look at what I’ve done thus far I can show you what I’ve been doing.

    MRS. MITCHELL

That’s okay, take your time. I’ll look over what Trent just emailed me and get back to you.

Mrs. Mitchell goes to her desk and checks her computer for Trent’s emailed information. She is very impressed with the efficiency of the concept that Trent created for compiling the emails into groups.

    MRS MITCHELL

Trent, I liked your idea of creating the group information lists. I think it will save time, and I’ve just sent it to Mr. Bellville,

    ROBERT

Mrs. Mitchell, I’ve finished the listings and it’s ready for your review.

    MRS. MITCHELL

Okay, that’s good. I already sent Trent’s off just now, so I’ll take a quick look at yours and get it off too.

Just then, Mrs. Mitchell’s phone rings. It’s Mr. Bellville. He likes Trent’s work and wants to see Robert’s emails too.

    MRS MITCHELL

Yes Mr. Bellville, Robert just completed his too, but I haven’t reviewed them yet.

    MR. BELLVILLE

Just sent them up, I’ll take a look now before I have to leave for a meeting this afternoon.

Mrs. Mitchell tells Robert to send her his emails, and she forwards them to Mr. Bellville.

Afterwards, she decides to take a little time to go over the email Robert sent and is shocked to discover the obvious similarities in the two separate emails.

    MRS. MITCHELL (sharply)

Robert and Trent, please come to my office immediately.

    ROBERT

Is everything okay? I hope it wasn’t completed too late. I’m sorry I took so long but I thought we still had some time left.

    TRENT

Did Mr. Bellville not like the way I did it?

    MRS. MITCHELL

I’m sure he liked it , but NOT the same one twice SO which one of you copied it? Own up now.

    TRENT

I gave you mine first, before Robert even finished his. I couldn’t copy something that wasn’t written yet.

    ROBERT

Every word I wrote is my own. I stayed at my desk all morning, except when I went to the break room for a cup of coffee for myself and Trent. If anyone copied anything, it wasn’t me.

    MRS MITCHELL

Robert, then how do you explain how Trent wrote the same sentence as you at the ending, and gave it to me before you finished writing it?

    ROBERT

But I HAD finished it, except for a few spellings I wanted to correct, even before I went for the coffee. Then Trent suggested we take a break. So we left. Then Trent had to go to the restroom, so I got our coffee.

    MRS. MITCHELL

Is that right Trent? When did you go to the restroom?

    TRENT

I don’t remember exactly, but I went there first and then to the break room.

    ROBERT

Yes, you came but you took ages, and your coffee was cold by the time you got there.

    MRS. MITCHELL

Okay you two. I know how to settle this right here and now.

Mrs. Mitchell reaches for her desk phone and calls the front desk.

    MRS. MITCHELL

Hi Tracy, It’s Mrs. Mitchell, Mr. Bellville’s secretary. Can you do me a favor and ask James, the security chief to give me a call. It’s not a big deal, just a question I have for him about the security cameras in my area of the building this morning. Thanks so much. Bye.

    James calls Mrs. Mitchell

    MRS. MITCHELL

Hi James, thanks for the quick call back. As I said, it not a big deal, just checking on anyone who was in my area between the rest room, the break room, and the area around my desk and the two interns’ desks between 11am and noon today. If you have any footage, an you give me a copy?

    JAMES

Sure, it’s so recent that won’t be a problem. I’ll send it right over. Just keep me posted on anything that is a security issue.

    MRS MITCHELL

Thanks James, I owe you another one of my apple pies!!

    MRS. MITCHELL

Robert and James, right now I am giving you both one last chance to explain the duplicate information you gave me. Security is bringing a video of the area from the time you both left your desks to go to the break room, up until I returned.

    TRENT

So now, we’re on trial right here in this room? I don’t have to take this kind of abuse from anyone. I’m outa here!

    MRS MITCHELL

Well, I guess that’s answer enough for me. Robert, I think you can also take the rest of the day off. This has been a tough enough day for you. I’ll give Mr. Bellville a call, I’m sure he’ll be happy that to hear this is all cleared up. Tomorrow we’ll go over everything.

    ROBERT

Thank you Mrs. Mitchell! I appreciate that. I don’t know how he copied my stuff, but I’m glad it’s over with.

Robert heads to the parking lot and goes to his car. Waiting in the back seat is Trent.

    TRENT

Hi Mr. Big Shot, I figured you’d be going home early, so I waited to give you my last regards.
