    Assignment Two

What I learned doing this assignment is just how complicated Gaia makes each relationship. In a lot of ways, looking back on what I write in the books, Gaia might be the instigator of the entire plot line with Dan and Megaera – this bears more scrutiny.

Show: Angels of Vengeance Relationship Maps

    Dan and Megaera

Relationship Surface: Dan is wary of Megaera, who is she really? But he goes align with her advances because she’s pretty insistent on a relationship

    Relationship Common Ground: Mutual attraction.

Relationship Conflict: Is she a vigilante? Dan wants/needs to solve crimes the legal way, and Megaera and her sisters simply go out and murder the suspect.

Relationship History: Just starting – but Dan is bowled over by Megarea’s affections. In a lot of ways, she’s like an excited puppy around Dan.

Relationship Subtext: Dan actually loves the idea of a woman like Megaera, but is she just using him until she tires of him, then wipes his memory?

Relationship Arc: From conflict, questions into a semi-normal relationship, if anyone can call a relationship with an Underworld Deity “normal”.

    Dan and Jones

Relationship Surface: Friends, possibly “come over to dinner” close, but not super close friends.

Relationship Common Ground: Policing the town, solving crimes.

Relationship Conflict: Jones is concerned with Dan’s lifestyle outside of the department, and Dan doesn’t want to hear about it.

Relationship History: Dan arrived at the department while Jones was still a patrolman, but saw in Jones the ability to be a good detective and partner.

Relationship Subtext: Typical “guy” subtext. Rattling on about a peewee football game while supervising a grisly crime scene.

Relationship Arc: Jones is concerned about Dan, and this mystery woman

    Dan and Sandra McKenna

Relationship Surface: Dan and Sandra are ex’s. Briefly had a relationship a few years ago.

Relationship Common Ground: Dan and Sandra both work for the city and Dan needs Sandra as a sounding board for cases and opinions.

Relationship Conflict: Past relationship marred by Dan’s use of alcohol and his past, which makes him resistant to a relationship.

Relationship History: Dan and Sandra began dating when Dan first arrived in the town, but before Sandra began working for the city. His drinking ultimately caused the relationship to shift to one of more of an office-relationship.

Relationship Subtext: Sandra still wants Dan in her life. Dan is frightened of any relationships.

Relationship Arc: Backstore mostly, then Sandra will act as Dan’s counselor after the store shooting and then the death of his niece, a nice source of conflict.

    Megaera – A Fury

    Megaera and Tisiphone

Relationship Surface: Megaera usually allows Tisiphone to be the “leader” of the three Furies, but has her own agenda.

    Relationship Common Ground: Goddess sisters.

Relationship Conflict: Tension between the two over Megaera wanting to be with Dan (or any mortal).

Relationship History: Goes back a few thousand years, since their creation during the time of the Titan – Elder God wars.

Relationship Subtext: Mutual respect for each others’ specific talents and powers

Relationship Arc: Until meeting Dan, Megaera was happy with following Tisiphone’s leadership, but Tisiphone doesn’t want Megaera in a relationship with any mortal.

    Megaera and Gaia

Relationship Surface: Gaia is mother earth, mother goddess to all gods, and she dotes on Megaera, who loves being doted upon.

Relationship Common Ground: Both exist outside time and space, in their own small corner of the earth.

Relationship Conflict: Gaia keeps crucial information away from the Furies, and knows Dan has the potential to hurt Megaera’s powers, but is allowing things to “play out”

Relationship History: For most of their existence, they were separate. Now they share a house in a small projection of N-Space into Earth’s reality matrix. Now, Gaia keeps things on track – petitions and the occasional wandering ghost.

Relationship Subtext: An easy going relationship. Often Gaia counsels Megaera while gardening.

Relationship Arc: Gaia will allow events to unfold, even tho she might be able to stop the events in the first season.

    Megaera and Alecto

Relationship Surface: Sisters, with Alecto also acting as counsel for Megaera,

Relationship Common Ground: The Furies kept the Underworld “running” properly. Alecto was/is vital to this task as she usually assists the other sisters in tracking down the target.

Relationship Conflict: Alecto also doesn’t want Megaera to have another relationship with a mortal, as it usually ends badly for the mortal. Megaera doesn’t seem to really care.

Relationship History: Going back to the beginning of time, they’ve been together, with Alecto sometimes accompanying Megaera on missions to take care of a target.

Relationship Subtext: A certain sexual tension between the two goddesses, as if they’ve been intimate beyond the usual sister-sister intimacy

Relationship Arc: Alecto grudgingly accepts Megaera’s relationship with Dan

    Gaia Relationship Map

    Gaia and Dan

Relationship Surface: Gaia is an intruder into Dan’s life.

Relationship Common Ground: Whatever is possessing the serial killer who murdered Dan’s niece also is dangerous to Gaia and the Furies

Relationship Conflict: Dan has serious trust issues with Gaia

Relationship History: They’d never met prior to Gaia invading Dan’s house one afternoon.

Relationship Subtext: After a while, it’s the same type of relationship a man would have with his mother-in-law

Relationship Arc: Antagonistic attitudes evolve into mutual respect

    Gaia and Delfina

Relationship Surface: Old friends who are comfortable with each other

Relationship Common Ground: Delfina is at one with nature, and Gaia is nature embodied.

Relationship Conflict: Delfina has knowledge she could use to help Gaia, but chooses not to do so

Relationship History: When Delfina was a child, she was introduced to Gaia by the other tribal medicine woman. Gaia has been around Delfina all her life.

Relationship Subtext: Delfina is cranky, but it only shows in her attitude when with Gaia

Relationship Arc: No real arc, except that Delfina later chooses to assist Gaia and the Furies.

    Gaia and The Furies

Relationship Surface: She’s a counselor or sounding board for the goddesses

Relationship Common Ground: All ancient goddesses

Relationship Conflict: Gaia tends to not tell the Furies important information they need in certain situations.

Relationship History: The history of the Furies, in that Gaia is their mother, being that the earth birthed the goddesses

Relationship Subtext: Gaia is subtly the leader of the Furies, without actually imposing her will onto them.

Relationship Arc: It’s revealed that Gaia is in far more danger than the Furies suspect.

BW Module 1, Lesson 6, BUILDING RELATIONSHIP MAPS

    Assignment 1

What I learned from Assignment 1: Relationship Maps provide a systematic way to identify and expand upon the dramas within several relationships over time.

    Example Show: UNORTHODOX: ESTY

    YANKY

    Surface: husband

Common Ground: She is pregnant with Yanky’s baby

Conflict: Yanky wants to bring Esty home.

History: Yanky wanted divorce and Esty left him.

Subtext: Yanky is now touched by Esty’s singing.

Arc: His loyalty shifts from “Mommy” to Esty, but Esty rejects him.

    MOISHE

    Surface: Would-be kidnapper of Esty.

Common Ground: Both left Hasidism in disgrace.

Conflict: Moishe must bring Esty home to win forgiveness.

History: Moishe returns to brothel and underworld friends.

Subtext: Everybody knows Moishe is a “bad Jew.”

<i style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Arc: Moishe’s Hasidism is only an act, and he fails to bring Esty home.

    MOTHER

    Surface: Esty’s Mother

Common Ground: Both left Hasidism in disgrace.

    Conflict:Esty believes mother abandoned her.

    <i style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>History: Esty taken from mother in custody court<div>

<i style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Subtext: Mother threatens Moishe with his gun.

    <div>

Arc:Once separated by Hasidism, Mother and Esty are reunited in Berlin.

    Assignment 2

What I learned from Assignment 2: The relationship map simplifies the process of examining relationships among real people to identify which ones can enrich the drama in a script based on a true story.

AG’s Show: ABOVE US ONLY SKY: ANNE

    PHIL

    Surface: Spouse

Common Ground: Both seek to live Christian faith authentically.

Conflict: Phil is in the driver’s seat, and Anne is dubious, scared, depressed.

History: Phil’s parents taught him to talk, think, and behave compassionately, while Anne passively trusted God and prayed in tongues.

Subtext: Phil believes women and men are equal; Anne once believed this, but grows to despise herself for being a woman.

Arc: Phil understands Anne’s depression, encourages her to join the women’s movement, where she becomes purposeful and sees this as God’s will; They continue making changes together and in their sixth decade, discover how their brains created and nourished these ideas about God, a common part of human history.

    Surface: Anne’s mother

Common Ground: Both are generally quiet and prioritize a personal relationship with Jesus.

Conflict: Anne accuses mother and women in the Gideon’s auxiliary of worshipping men instead of God.

History: In mother’s early childhood, her mother and two sisters died. When other children ran to their mothers, she comforted herself by running to Jesus.

Subtext: Anne thinks mom is a “sweet airhead,” but Anne is unaware of mom’s childhood trauma and of her own “unchristian” emotions.

Arc:Mom shapes Anne’s early ideas and does not tell Anne her stories for fear she will write about them. After mom’s death, Anne sees how mom supported her goals even while fearing them.

    Surface: Anne’s paternal grandpa

Common Ground: Both believe they need to correctly interpret scriptures and witness to others. When Anne wants to be a boy named Daniel, grandpa proudly exclaims, “Dare to be a Daniel! Dare to stand alone!”

Conflict: As a lonely child and teen, Anne does not bother reading grandpa’s carefully constructed letters that she finds boring.

History: In the 1800s, grandpa’s mother escaped a violent husband, and this boy had a nervous breakdown. He found healing in a tract about Jesus. He and his mother began preaching. They later moved from England to America, drawn to one evangelist after another.

Subtext:Grandpa’s rigid doctrines led to frequent ruptures in relationships that hindered his righteous goals and made him seem eccentric.

Arc: Grandpa’s childhood reminded Anne of children at the shelter she led for battered women. Throughout his life, grandpa followed various evangelists before being disappointed and abandoning each one as he sought perfection. He believes God has led him to a place in Arizona where they can “defend themselves against the Reds.” Anne respects the way her father grew beyond his father’s scriptural rigidity. She wonders how their children will grow beyond her and Phil.

    ASSIGNMENT 2:

    Mike – Relationship Map

What I learned doing this assignment was how to set up and frame each of the characters to interact while supporting the hero’s journey and the season’s overall theme. I like the ability to juxtapose the ‘surface’ relationship with the subtext and the emotional and psychological drivers for the various characters actions and reactions to events and stimuli.

[I] Create a Relationship Map for THREE lead characters from YOUR SHOW IDEA. I created it, cannot upload it here in this forum.

[II] Using the Relationship map, pick a main character (place in upper left hand corner), and with each character he or she is in relationship with, give us the 6 relationship experiences listed below:

[1] Surface: How does the relationship appear on the surface? Are they teammates, competitors, drinking buddies, married couple, business partners, co-anchors, friends, or what?

[2] Common Ground: What do they have in common? Job, school, friends, goals, needs, values, beliefs, experience, background, common enemies, etc.. Look for what these two share. Even if they hate each other, they likely have something in common. It will all come in handy as you write the show.

[3] Conflict: What things, issues, or situations will they fight about? Power, control, property, relationships, jealousy, competition, betrayal, different political views, physical conflicts, etc. *First look for the big conflicts because those will be the ones that run throughout the entire season.

[4] History: What is the past of this relationship that makes it what it is today? Are they old lovers? Did they fight like cats and dogs? Was one superior to the other? Did one betray the other? There may be thousands of details, but *you are looking for the moments that define this relationship.

[5] Subtext: What is under the surface, hidden, or covert? Unexpressed love or hate, competition, schemes, or maybe it is a secret that has been present the whole time, but won’t come out until the season finale!

[6] Relationship Arc: Where does the relationship start at the beginning of the series and end at the completion of the season? From friends to enemies. From unknown to lovers. From competitors to partners. From suspicion to believing in each other. Think of how the relationship changes by the end of the season.

====================================================================A. Lead character: Caleb Sutherland (relationship with Victoria)

    (1) Surface = How does this relationship appear on the surface? Physical attraction and an instant chemistry. Hesitation on Caleb’s part due to his past. Victoria’s compassion overcomes his fears.

    (2) Common Ground = What do they have in common? Go to same school, both lost a loved one, both need love, both believe in helping others: Caleb, special needs kids, Victoria, stray animals.

    (3) Conflict = What things, issues, or situations will they fight about? US government: Caleb distrusts it, Victoria believes in it || People: Caleb is trusting; Victoria is suspicious || Politics: Caleb sees it as all a power grab; Victoria is conservative, believes in the Constitution ||

    (4) History = What is the past of this relationship that makes it what it is today? They just met, but they share the pain of losing a loved one and they both share a deep-seated need to help the less fortunate.

    (5) Subtext = What is under the surface, hidden, or covert? Caleb’s powers, a secret that has been present the whole time and which he shares with Victoria after they become lovers.

    (6) Relationship Arc = Where does the relationship start at the beginning of the series and end at the completion of the season? It starts at the beginning of the series. Unknown to lovers. From curiosity to believing in each other.

=============================================================== B. Do the same process for the second lead character

Second lead character: Victoria Lynn Musgrave (relationship with Caleb)

    (1) Surface = How does this relationship appear on the surface? Physical attraction and an instant chemistry. Caleb’s hesitation and loneliness attracts her as she is drawn to ‘strays.’

Her wanting a family, wanting to be a mother.

    (6) Relationship Arc = Where does the relationship start at the beginning of the series and end at the completion of the season? Unknown to lovers. From curiosity to believing in each other.

============================================================== C. Do the same process for the third lead character

Third lead character: Charles Stewart (relationship with Caleb)

    (1) Surface = How does this relationship appear on the surface? Friend of the family, butleresque,

    (2) Common Ground = What do they have in common? Family and background. Charles is the grandfather Caleb never had. Similar beliefs, family experiences and background.

    (3) Conflict = What things, issues, or situations will they fight about? Caleb’s powers and abilities. Charles wants him to practice, to prepare for war. Power, Charles tells him it is the one universal constant in all living creatures, the undead ones too. Competition, will always exist so long as their limited supplies and resources… Caleb wants there to be harmony, that power and competition are just two words that mean greed.

    (4) History = What is the past of this relationship that makes it what it is today? Charles raised and taught Caleb a number of things: music, his abilities, how to step back and watch to learn.

    (5) Subtext = What is under the surface, hidden, or covert? Charles is grooming Caleb for the war against the Necromancers, the Coven all the evil that is circling mankind.

    (6) Relationship Arc = Where does the relationship start at the beginning of the series and end at the completion of the season? Trusted mentor and grandfatherly to savior and tutor as the war begins.

    Adam Grant relationship map

    -Mendelstein

Surface – Mendelstein is essentially Adams boss

Common ground – both are german jewish immigrants, both are con artists and thieves, both are obsessed with obtaining power and respect.

Conflict – a lot of this will center on the struggle for power between Adam and Mendelstein

History – Mendelstein essentially took adam in when he was a young runaway, and took a liking to him because of his brain and similar heritage.

Arc – this will be a complicated one, I think in the first season her role will mostly be antagonistic but as the series progresses it will go back and forth.

    Sophie Leopold

Surface – On the surface their relationship is flirty yet competitive.

Common Ground – Both want to create an empire for themselves, both are fairly non violent and driven by a criminal obsession. Both are interested in each other.

Conflict – Sophie will be in a relationship with a crime boss, she will also still be loyal to Mendelstein somewhat biding her time unlike adam who starts to break away in season one. Sophie is also a kleptomaniac whereas Adam is a possible sociopath narcissist driven by the con.

History – Sophie and Adam were trained together by mendelstein, there was always competition to be top student.

Arc – The arc will be romantic with them possibly ending up together in some way but we’ll have to see about that. Eventually she could become a secondary antagonist in the final season.

    Sargent Nickelson

Surface – Nickelson is hunting Adam, almost obsessed with him

Common Ground – Both men are driven in their pursuits, one for justice and one for a criminal empire. Both men would also like to see Mendelstein taken down

Conflict – Nickelson is hellbent on arresting Adam

History – Nickelback found Adams file when he was a bond jumper and gradually saw him grow as a criminal and saw what he could become.

Arc – He will be the primary antagonist in season one but eventually a friendship and mutual respect will begin to form for the men.

    Sargent Nickelson Character map

    Mendelstein

Surface – though most don’t necessarily know about her criminal dealings, Nickelson is fairly well aware but has no way of actually really getting to her in any way, not yet.

Common Ground – Both are clever and both have a temper in their own way.

Conflct – Nickelson would happily take down Mendelstein if he could and she knows that. At the same time their could be a slight romantic air to them.

History – Nickelson has dealt with Mendelstein once or twice in the past, his dad investigated her directly and he was one of the detectives on the case.

Arc – Eventually Nickelson will rise and Mendelstein will fall but it will not be by Nickelsons hand.

    Sophie Leopold

Surface – Sophie is an unrepentant thief, Nickelson is a detective.

Common Ground – Nickelson is somewhat charmed by Sophie, and at the same time Sophie prefers Nickelson over the others who have investigated her. He has an interest in psychology and he recognizes her kleptomania.

Conflict – She’s still an unrepentant thief and he constantly is hunting her and having run ins with her while investigating Adam in New York.

History – Nickelson has investigated Sophie a few times previously and even had her arrested.

Arc – Flirty but antagonistic however Sophie will have a change of heart and reform and Nickelson will be a huge help to her in that.

    Mendelstein Relationship Map

    Sophie Leopold

Surface – Sophie works for Mendelstein

Commonn Ground – Both are early feminists in crime driven by the finer things in life. Both are talented pickpockets.

Conflict – Sophie is tired of Mendelsteins control and condescension. She wants to take her place in the beginning.

History – Mendelstein trained and partially raised Sophie. Theres a somewhat twisted mother daughter relationship there. Sophie has always been one of her top earners and prized student.

Arc – Sophie will bide her time but will gradually turn against Mendelstein.
