    <div>Jan’s Stacking Intrigue…</div>

    WIL: learned about the concept of stacking intrigue to make your turning points more powerful.

    <div><div>

    Teaser: WAR Essence: During his duty, Oliver’s patrol is ambushed by a child assassin, resulting in the death of a fellow soldier in his arms.

    TP 1 : Intriguing World: When Oliver’s patrol is ambushed by a child assassin, this results in the death of a fellow soldier in his arms and change his believe as a soldier

    TP 2: Startled from his daytime nightmare in the desert camp, Oliver must gather himself and continue the interrogation of the primary assassin, of this fellow soldier.

    O Opening : Marty is a loyal police officer in the field, but over time he started he started to question the work ethics in the army.

    Act 1: TRAVEL

    Essence: Interrupted during the interrogation, Oliver learns of his father’s sudden death and catches a cargo flight home with the help of his buddy. He briefly speaks to his mother on the phone, promising to listen to her full story upon their reunion. </div><div>

    TP 1: Oliver receives the news of his father’s sudden death.

    TP 2: Oliver is stranded for 48 hrs but hiss buddy helps him catch a cargo flight to return home immediately.

    (Opening O): Oliver is released to fly home for his father’s funeral

    TP3: Stranded at a cargo airfield, Oliver can’t get hold of his mum and chooses a motel to get some sleep, assuming his mother will be resting as well.

    (O Dilemma:) Oliver needs rest and decides against driving that night.

    Act 2: ARRIVAL

    Essence: Essence: Oliver returns home and meets detective Petra, who informs him about his mother’s death but is unaware of his father’s demise. They explore the house together, and Oliver discovers his mother’s appointment with the notary. Despite his emotional state, Petra insists on proof of his identity before granting him access to his parents’ house. </div><div>

    (O’s O) Oliver arrives home, meets detective Petra, who shares the news of his mother’s passing. They search the house, but Petra sees no signs of foul play. Oliver finds an appointment in his mother’s calendar that raises suspicions. However, Petra withholds the keys and denies him the opportunity to stay.

    TP1 : Oliver is not the son arriving to assist, suddenly he is all alone and on himself.

    (P O) Petra is ready to leave when an unknown individual approaches, questioning her presence. Although he identifies as Oliver Wind, there is no concrete proof that he is the woman’s son. With tensions rising, they walk through the house, and Oliver notices pictures of himself. Despite this, Petra refuses to let him stay, asserting her authority.

    P TP 1: As Petra prepares to leave, Oliver asks about his father’s body, but she is clueless about it. She requests to show up at the investigation department.

    TP2 /Midpoint: Oliver sees and feels something „is off““ in the house and he defies the dismissive homicide department and embarks on a journey to uncover the truth.

    Act 3: DOORS SHUT

    Essence: Frustrated and alone in his hometown, Oliver encounters obstacles at the residents registration office due to lack of proof of identity and other public offices. He attempts to contact relatives, including Uncle Hans, but faces difficulties reaching them. He schedules an appointment for the following day and also contacts the police at his father’s workplace. </div><div>

    O Dilemma: Feeling isolated in his own town, Oliver refuses to give up and takes proactive measures, visiting various public offices for assistance. While condolences are offered, he struggles to find anyone willing to provide immediate help.

    (Hans O): Uncle Hans receives a call from Oliver, expressing condolences for his father’s death but postponing their meeting until the next day due to being out of town. He then informs Clarice, about Oliver’s arrival, leading to uncertainty about their next steps? P3: Nobody is ready to help instantly, he must halt to regain strength.

    (Notary O) Oliver arrives at the notary’s office, initially facing resistance from the secretary. However, notary Muller intervenes and invites him into his office. Meeting Oliver first time.

    O TP: In a surprising turn of events, Oliver is handed a recently signed power of attorney document by his mother, dated just one day prior, raising suspicions about her intentions.

    TP 4: Oliver is handed a freshly signed power of attorney document by his mother at the notary’s office, dated just one day before her death.

    Act 4: BRAWL/ SEX

    Oliver confronts the authorities with the power of attorney, gaining access to his home where he searches in frustration for answers. </div><div>

    TP1: Oliver presents his Power of Attorney to the Petra, receives the keys to his parents house and announces: truth must and will be uncovered.

    (O Major Conflict) Despite limited evidence and resistance from the authorities, Oliver becomes determined to uncover the truth behind his parents’ deaths, pushing forward in his investigation. And he files for an indictment against unknown O shows up at the Prosecutor’s office and files for an obduction. Uncle Hans is receiving phone calls, Oliver is taking the town upside down.

    TP 2: Additionally he calls military police and files for an administrative assistance procedure. Oliver enters his parents home sits and takes a breath. He searches the house with no success.

    O TP3 : Oliver becomes involved in a – staged -bar brawl, sustaining injuries. TP4: Marie, the bartender, comes to his aid and they share a passionate night together.

    (Marie opening) Marie encounters Oliver at her nighttime job and is drawn to him, offering her support and inviting him to stay the night.

    Turning Point 5: After their encounter, Oliver is restless and suffering from insomnia, he takes a walk in an attempt to find solace and peace of mind.

    Act 5: RESTLESS NIGHT

    Essence: Oliver searches his parents’ house again and uncovers a hidden compartment containing one of his mother’s diary. </div>

    TP/Lock In: As he reads aloud from his mother’s diary, he shatters the illusion of her death: a peaceful dead, really

    KZ Stacks Intrigue

    What I learned doing this assignment is…a technique for stacking intrigue on the way to the turning point.

    List of turning points:

    Act I – Detective shows up, asking about Raymond’s missing shoe

    Act II – Oliver discovers that he and Tony were lovers, and that the Russian knows him

    Act III – Nolan is working for the Russians – he’s the one who tried to kill Oliver, and thinks that his victim is near death at the hospital

    Act IV – Raymond was Tony’s lover, and all his lovers wind up dying gruesomely

    Act V – Oliver is accused and must find Raymond’s real murderer

      I returned to this exercise to stack the intrigue. Acts 4 and 5 are a bit thin, but I’ll beef them up as I go along.

      Teaser

      Mystery: Who is the cloaked woman?

      Mystery: Who is the unseen attacker, and why do they sound like an animal?

      Strange behavior: Why isn’t the attacker interested in the cloaked woman?

      Mystery: Why is Raymond’s throat shredded, as though by an animal?

      Turning point: Raymond falls to his death, leaving behind a shoe

      Act 1

      Mystery: Who is Oliver and is this really his apartment?

      Mystery: Who brought Oliver and Indigo together?

      Mystery: Why does Oliver think he’s an undercover agent?

      Strange behavior: Indigo doesn’t behave like a nurturing tarot reader

      Strange behavior: Oliver doesn’t behave like an undercover agent.

      Mystery: Why was Tony hiding in his apartment?

      Mystery: Why does Oliver think he’s an undercover agent?

      Mystery: Who is the “homeless” cloaked woman and where does she disappear to?

      Strange behavior: Why did Michelle, the superintendent, think the apartment was empty?

      Mystery: How did Raymond’s shoe wind up in Oliver’s apartment?

      Mystery: Why does Michelle think Oliver doesn’t belong here?

      Turning point: Michelle hides the shoe from Detective Uhm, protecting Oliver

      Act II

      Mystery: How did the cloaked woman leave Oliver’s apartment?

      Mystery: Where does the portal lead to?

      Mystery: How was the portal created?

      Strange behavior: Why does Tony kiss Oliver and then slap him?

      Secret: Tony claims that he and Oliver had a clandestine affair

      Mystery: Why does Tony claim to know nothing about the shoe, or Raymond, or the murder?

      Wound: Oliver was in the hospital with Covid, that’s why he can’t remember anything

      Hidden Layer: Tony tells Oliver that Loren had an affair with Michelle when she was Michael Deception: Tony hides Oliver in the hall because Loren enters the room and asks who he was talking to

      Intrigue: Loren recognizes the shoe

      Accusation: Tony says that Oliver brought it, to gage Loren’s reaction.

      Intrigue: Vlad, in the hallway, sees Oliver, pulls a gun

      Suspense: Will Oliver get back in before Vlad gets to him?

      Deception: Oliver gets back in, grabs the shoe and disappears through the portal.

      Suspense: Vlad bursts into the apartment

      Turning point: Oliver overhears Vlad accuse Loren of not disposing of Oliver.

      Act III

      Accusation: Vlad accuses Loren of botching Oliver’s death.

      Suspense: Vlad searches the apartment while Loren glowers at Tony

      Deception: Tony feigns innocence

      Mystery: Why does Vlad want Oliver dead?

      Intrigue: Loren tells Tony to call the hospital and ask about Oliver’s status

      Mystery: Tony searches for the pathway Oliver came through, can’t find it.

      Hidden Layer: Loren loses patience with Tony, makes the call himself about “lover boy”

      Intrigue: What does Vlad have on Loren that makes him so afraid?

      Mystery: Why is Vlad interested in the publication date of Loren’s next book?

      Mystery: Why is Vlad giving Loren information to plug into the novel?

      Hidden agenda: His own life in peril, Loren assures Vlad even if Oliver is alive, he will be dead soon.

      Deception: Oliver eavesdrops

      Accusation: Since phoning hasn’t worked, Vlad forces Loren to accompany him to the hospital to get eyewitness proof that Oliver is dead.

      Accusation: Oliver demands to know from Michelle why these men want him dead.

      Turning Point: Michelle tells Oliver about the gruesome deaths of all men who flirt with Tony, and warns him not to get too involved in that story.

      Act IV

      Strange behavior: When Tony turns up and Oliver breaks up with him, Tony claims not to even know him

      Strange behavior: After pretending not to recognize the shoe, Tony absconds with it.

      Turning point: At the hospital, Loren and Vlad see that Oliver is clearly in intensive care, at death’s door.

      Act V

      Turning point:

      Detective Uhm finds the shoe in the apartment, accuses Oliver of Raymond’s death.

    LIKE THE JONESES – Stacks Intrigue

    What I learned doing this assignment is how to get the beats for each act. Once you know the climax/turning point of each act, you can organize the beats that lead up to it. It helped to streamline the outline.

    Teaser

    •Henry, Willie’s estranged nephew, a gambling addict, owes money in multiple states and the loan sharks are on his ass.

    ◦Intriguing World: World of Cannabis, Legal cannabis dealers

    ◦Intriguing World: Jones Farmacy celebrates 10 years at their gala.

    ◦Intrigue: Willie shouts out his whole family, including Henry who is not present, and deceased sister, Monica

    ◦Mystery: Henry isn’t at the gala when it starts

    ◦Intrigue 2: Willie explains that Henry’s flight was delayed, and he couldn’t be here (why was the flight delayed)

    ◦Deception: Henry already landed in Oregon two days ago (why did he lie about his flight?)

    ◦Hidden Agenda: Family visit as a decoy to hideout from the loan sharks.

    ◦Hidden Layer/Mystery: Willie’s name is the trustee on the inheritance. Monica’s name is also on the document.

    Act 1

    Tony gives Willie an ultimatum and demands more power in the company.

    ◦Intrigue: Tony does mundane, routine day to day tasks, but seems to be the most knowledgeable one.

    ◦Mystery: Why does Tony have to get Willie’s approval on all his deals.

    ◦Hidden Agenda: Tony speaks about stepping up at the gala, putting Willie on the spot.

    ◦Wound: Tony’s past behaviors when he was drinking, is why Willie and Noelle don’t trust him to run the company.

    ◦Hidden Layer: Elaine thinks if Willie hands over control to Tony, they can leave the country.

    ◦Accusation: Noelle accuses Tony of being a “yes” man.

    ◦Accusation: The other cannabis business owners question Tony’s lack of power at Jones Farmacy. “Dude, close the fucking deal”

    ◦Strange Behavior: Willie feels his career is peaking although he’s supposed to be prepping for retirement.

    Act 2

    Henry has incriminating info on Willie. Henry threatens to go to the LOCC if Willie doesn’t pay him.

    ◦Mystery: Heather learns that Henry never got on the plane that was supposedly delayed.

    ◦Intrigue: The family learns that Henry was already in Oregon at the time the plane took off.

    ◦ Intrigue 2: Pete’s future with the LOCC is being questioned.

    ◦Accusation: Pete’s business is struggling. The Governor/LOCC points out how Pete can’t keep up with Willie Jones.

    ◦ Pete explains that he is self-made, not an heir like Willie.

    ◦Elaine has finally convinced Willie to take a break and leave Tony in charge.


    Act 3

    Tony learns more details about the LOCC activities, including his father’s involvement.

    ◦Willie appoints Henry as CEO of Jones Farmacy

    ◦Tony resigns.

    ◦Pete hears about Tony digging into LOCC activity.

    ◦Pete goes to the Governor about Tony.

    ◦Pete’s term at the LOCC doesn’t get renewed

    ◦Pete’s VP walks out with the rest of the staff

    ◦The cannabis community, including Pete’s former VP, support Tony


    Act 4

    Pete offers Tony a sweet deal. He wants him on his team at Green Diamonds.

    ◦Accusation: Noelle tells tony he needs to spread his wings, get from under his dad.

    ◦Hidden Agenda: The cannabis community explains to Tony how valuable he is. Tony is becoming closer with the cannabis business community.

    o Deception: Willie lies to Tony to hide the blackmail.

    o Hidden Agenda: Pete feels Tony would be a great addition to his company, Green Diamonds.

    o Suspicion: Pete suspects that Tony is digging into LOCC activity.

    o Secret: Henry hides his gambling loans from Willie and Heather.

    o Conspiracy: Tony learns more about Willie’s involvement with LOCC fraud.

    o Hidden Layer: Pete offers to smooth things over with Noelle.

    o Hidden Agenda: Tony decides not to return to Jones Farmacy.


    Act 5

    Tony accepts a position as VP of Green Diamonds, Jones Farmacy’s competition.

    o Intrigue: Tony receives multiple offers from the cannabis community

    o Mystery: Willie cancels his plans to leave town.

    o Danger: The loan sharks track Henry down and arrive in Portland.

    What I learned doing this assignment is going through each act adding the intrigue layers to help strengthen the turning points.

    Most of my turning points remained the same but I’ve added some points to make them stronger and more direct.
