DEB STENARD’S LESSON 7- MONSTER REVEAL TRACK-
What I learned in doing this assignment is:
The writer/filmmakers of THE THING obviously know these steps. I am a big fan of the original THING movie from the 50’s. This one scared the crap out of me. I still have to make my monster scarier, but the section A. WHO IS YOUR MONSTER AND WHAT IS THEIR TERROR is a huge help in pushing me to think beyond the ordinary.
ASSIGNMENT 2
Take these steps to create your Monster Reveal Track.
1. Create each part of this model:
A. Who is your monster and what is their terror?
My monster is a DOOMSDAY PREPPER pushed over the edge by his fears and when he contracts an extremely potent strain of rabies
Powers?
He can hunt, shoot, had expert woodsman skills, in perfect shape. Has lost all fear due to the rabies infecting his
Limitations?
Hasn’t been off the mountain in years and cannot function around people
Weaknesses?
He cannot tolerate water, not even the sound of it. He has developed Laryngospasm and makes howling noises due to spasms in his throat
Plan/Purpose/Appetite?
To kill anyone who tries to throw him off his land.
ACT 1- SET UP FOR HORROR
ATMOSPHERE OF EVIL ESTABLISHED:
(WE NEVER SEE THE ACTUAL FACE OF THE MAN, AS HIS GOGGLES AND NECK GAITER OBSCURE IT)
A weird local is hunting in the woods with night vision goggles. He finds a den of baby raccoons and is in the act of taken them out of the nest when the mother attacks him with savage ferocity. The raccoon is foaming at the mouth as it bites the hunter over and over again. He finally manages to kill it. He takes it home, cooks it and eats it. The bite marks from the animal appear red and infected.
CONNECT WITH THE CHARACTERS:
Billionaire Developer orders his second-in-command to get two young women from the company to accompany the two men on a weekend at
the new development before it is open to the public.
1st REVEAL
As the Billionaire and his group drive up the road to the development, they see dead animals eviscerated and displayed as warning signs along the way. The size of the animal gets bigger and bigger as they drive up the road. They speculate as to who would have done such a revolting thing.
THE CHARACTERS ARE WARNED NOT TO DO IT:
After being stopped by al yokel deputy before driving up to the hotel, the group are warned that a local man is angry at the fence that was built around the development because it cuts off access to his family lands. The Billionaire hires the yokel to be the Security Guard for the weekend.
2nd REVEAL
A lawyer meets the group at the newly erected “spite fence”. He has a lawsuit filed by an environmental group, in the name of the Doomsday Prepper- BOONE TOMPKINS. The billionaire asks to meet with Boone, to try and convince him to end the lawsuit, but the lawyer refuses to have anything to do with Boone, being terrified of him.
DENIAL OF HORROR:
The Second-in-Command says the ancestral land was legally taken by eminent domain and the angry local has no recourse except to take the billionaire to court- for the next 50 years. The angry local suddenly appears in front of their car, acting odd. His eyes roll in his head, and he drools. He demands the fence be taken down, screaming that the mere presence of a fence on the mountain is an insult, and the Billionaire and his hotel are an anathema to God. The group laughs at him and drive on.
SAFETY TAKEN AWAY:
When they get to the hotel, they realize that the gate cannot be closed, because the final code has not been loaded. Even though a giant iron fence with spikes on it, surrounds the property, they can either leave the gate open or shut it manually and contact someone to come fix the code and then open the gate. The Billionaire says to leave the gate open. They can call someone to come up and fix the electronics when they get to the hotel. Inside, they meet the Concierge, who will be their private servant for the weekend. She tells them that something is wrong with the private cell tower and there is no phone or internet service.
MONSTER: NATURE OF THE BEAST
After dropping off their bags, they go for exploring around the grounds.
They find a wolf hole- a pit trap with sharpened sticks in the bottom and in the pit is the electronic specialist who was supposed to add the code to lock the gate. He is very dead.
3RD REVEAL
The group find the tiger pit near a stream with the body of the electrical technician impaled on sharpened sticks. Boone cannot approach the pit due to the sound of running water. His laryngospasms sound like barking and the group mistake him for a wild dog.
ACT 2 – THE POINT OF NO RETURN
ISOLATED/TRAPPED/ABDUCTED
After finding the dead man, the group wants to leave, but when they get to the gate, they find they are locked in. The Billionaire orders the local deputy to climb the fence and go for help.
4th REVEAL
The security guard is ordered to try and climb the Spite Fence and go for help. Boone kills him with a crossbow and the group witnesses his body being hoisted by a sinister figure and thrust onto the iron spired on the fence. Crows come and feed on his body.
ONE OF US IS KILLED –
While trying to climb the fence, the deputy is hit by an arrow from a crossbow and impales himself on the fence and dies. The group race back to the hotel and lock themselves in.
MIDPOINT: THE MONSTER IS WORSE THAN WE THOUGHT!
FULL PURSUIT BY THE KILLER
The Concierge tries to take charge, because she has been at the hotel for weeks and knows all the nooks and crannies. But the Billionaire and his Second-in-Command refuse to let an old woman be in control.
The Concierge grabs the girls and takes them to a place of safety. The two men feel two against one is good odds, so they make plans to hunt the killer and they head to the kitchen to look for weapons.
TERRORIZED
The two men out of their depth. The second-in-Command tries to fight off the Killer but hasn’t got the strength to hold him off. The Billionaire runs away to leave the second-in-command to his fate. The Killer forces his head into a boiling hot fry-o-later.
5th REVEAL
The Billionaire and the Second in Command try to fight off the killer in the darkened kitchen. The killer forces the head of the S-in-C into the hot oil fryer. By the fire that bubbles up as the oil spills, we finally see the partial face of the monster with staring eyes and slavering mouth.
ACT 3- FULL OUT HORROR
FIGHT TO THE DEATH-
The Billionaire stumbles through the hotel, trying to escape the killer.
He is found by the Concierge, who drags him into the safe room where she is hiding with the girls. The Billionaire wants to go to the woods, because he thinks they’ll have a better chance to get away down the mountain. He convinces the one of the girls to go with him by promising her money if they manage to escape.
HYSTERIA- The Billionaire and one girl try to leave. They are sneaking through the hotel, when the girl is grabbed from behind, not by the killer, but by the second-in-command, dying in excruciating pain from his burns. The girls has a panic attack. She grabs a (HEAVY OBJECT NOT SURE WHAT!) and beats the burned man to death with it. He dies and she is sobbing. The Billionaire tries to shut her up, but the killer stumbles upon to them and bites the girl in the throat to make her stop screaming.
6th REVEAL
We finally see the full face of the monster. He grabs the first girl from behind and moves in as if he is going to kiss her neck. In reality, he tears out her throat with his teeth.
The Billionaire falls into the koi pond in the middle of the lobby. The sight of water causes the Killer to foam uncontrollably at the mouth and run away. The Billionaire runs back to the Concierge and the last girl and tells them what happened.
THE THRILLING ESCAPE FROM DEATH-
The Concierge realizes that the killer is suffering from Rabies and probably doesn’t have long to live, since he is exhibiting symptoms of acute hydrophobia and hallucinations. The Concierge and the girl decide to set a fire and hope that the authorities will see it and come up to put it out. They grab anything burnable from the hotel and pile it in the driveway and set it on fire. They soon hear helicopters coming to check out the flames. The Billionaire is furious that the women are burning priceless works of art. He grabs a water hose and attempts to put the fire out. The killer appears from hiding, grabs the Billionaire and throws him into the bonfire.
DEATH RETURNS TO TAKE ONE MORE-
The Concierge turns the water full on to the Killer, which causes him to foam at the mouth and die.
The helicopters circle the fire and see the last girl attempting to throw the Killer’s body onto the fire to make sure he is dead. The authorities, not knowing what she is trying to do, shoot her and she falls into the fire with the killer.
RESOLUTION-
The Concierge is the only one left. She is leaving with the few belongings. She is heading for the police car waiting to drive her away. She hears a strange noise. She turns to see another raccoon lurching towards her, stiff gate and foaming at the mouth. She screams.

Monster Reveal
The Thing is one of my alltime favorite horror films. 1982 and 2011. The 1982 version and Alien changed the world of horror. I was so happy for the prequel. I’m not sure if I’m doing the overlay correctly. What I learned is how to further list the sequence of events and this time its’ the revealing of the monster.
1. My monster is actually an outstanding member of the vampire community and serves as a Homicide Police Detective Reineer Davenport of the Atlanta Special Vampire Crimes Task Force. In the opening scene the Monster’s assistant is seen dragging the last remaining dead body of the victim group from years before. The Monster is present during the elevator scenes during the original abductions but because of his power of speed he is never really seen or remembered by the group.
A. He has the power of speed, super strength, good looks.
B. He has a weakness for the sun and special UV weapons used by humans. His popularity.
C. He is limited to only being able to operate outdoors when the sun is down or very cloudy days.
D. His plan is to drain the blood from the group without them knowing what is going on. He keeps them hopped up on LSD during certain intervals which also keep them from remembering what’s going on. The blood drive isn’t for him but for someone else who he feels needs it.
2. Sequence the reveals.
A. The monster is busy at work in the beginning but the audience never gets a good enough look at him.
B. He is revealed at the first funeral wake scene but the audience doesn’t know he’s the monster hiding in plain sight.
C. The monster assistant is revealed by accident and then begins flirting with Niki and hates on Derrick.
D. The first reveal of the monster comes during the fourth killing cycle.
E. Killing Malcolm at the basement window. Placing him in the chair.
F. Killing Det. Riley
G. Placing Det. Riley’s body in the basement chairs.
H. Realizing the plan isn’t working the monster decides to kill Niki.
I. Killing his own assistant.
J. Killing Niki as he gets shot to death by Derrick.
3. Create demand for each clue/reveal.
A. The group tries to figure out who, what, when and how of their situation.
B. The accidental dose leaves two of the group awake during the phase two of the fourth killing cycle.
C. The monster believes someone is awake that should be asleep.
D. Two of the group escapes. The chase in the basement.
E. The monster believes Det. Riley can hear screams for help coming from the basement.
F. The monster decides to call it quits and shuck his failing plan.
G. The monster assistant is bothered by what’s going to happen to Niki.
H. Derrick shows up with the shotgun.
Tony J’s BLOODSTREAM: HORROR SITUATION TRACK
What I learned is that this is very hard. I learned how to track the ups and downs and I hope I am doing this right.
ACT 1 SET UP FOR HORROR
· ATMOSPHERE OF EVIL ESTABLISHED:
The Opening scene cuts between the two settings. The lone person reading a eulogy at a wake service at a funeral parlor then cut to a dead body, drained of blood and prune like in appearance, being dragged away by its leg from a group of 6-8 empty surgical type bondage chairs. The person reading the eulogy is dressed the same as the body being dragged. It’s the same person.
10 YEARS LATER:
· CONNECT WITH THE CHARACTERS:
HORROR SITUATION:
The elevator they normally use to go to the tenth floor stops on floor six and thereby forced off the elevator to an adjoining building’s bridge detour and have to take a different elevator. Things really become harry when after pressing the up button it takes them straight down to an unlit, seemingly unsafe garage level.
REACTION:
Each group member tries to hurry back to the elevator before the doors close but is apprehended by the monster.
HORROR SITUATION:
One of the group decides to try not getting back on the elevator and heads for the daylight he sees. A chase pursues and just as he thinks he’s made it to the entrance the Monster’s assistant grabs him.
REACTION:
The victim runs and tries to hide under a car. When he thinks the coast is clear he runs for the entrance screaming and yelling for help but is caught.
ACT 2 – THE POINT OF NO RETURN
· ISOLATED/TRAPPED/ABDUCTED:
Each group member awakes in turn to discover they are in a dungeon type basement strapped to medical procedure type chairs and cannot move. They discover each other and the surroundings and begin the hallucinations back and forth from the basement to the funeral parlor. The discoveries continue until the monster begins to make mistakes. The group notices that the hallucinations happen in two phases. The first phase has the group returning to find the eulogy speaker asleep or unconscious and after returning the second time the eulogy reader is missing and or replaced with a new captive.
HORROR SITUATION:
Everyone who is shackled is screaming for help and trying to break free from the chairs.
REACTION:
The clock buzzes and begins the first LSD type trip to the funeral parlor for the first wake ceremony. They all file into the parlor passing by the funeral director/ monster and closed coffin before sitting. One of the group members stands and walks to the front to speak kindly of the departed.
HORROR SITUATION:
The group returns from the funeral parlor setting to find that one person of the group is unconscious and the group is unaware of anything. NOTE: The group is unaware that they have been asleep and don’t remember anything from the wake service.
REACTION:
They try to wake the group member up to ask if she knows anything. She never wakes up.
HORROR SITUATION:
The group returns to the funeral parlor, unable to move or speak except for the speaker. They watch as the speaker leaves the parlor of her own free will however they are still unable to move.
REACTION:
As the group returns to the basement they notice that the speaker is no longer among them. Her chair is empty. DENIAL- Not everyone in the group remembers the person. There is some denial that the chair was occupied. TRY TO SOLVE- They try to devise a plan to figure out what happened to her.
Rinse and repeat a few times until there are only four group members remaining. Each time they notice a member asleep when everyone else is awake but still no answers.
HORROR SITUATION:
They begin to notice that the clock is also a timer. One of them figures out that they are losing time. They begin to realize that they are missing 15-20 minutes every half an hour and that somehow the group is getting smaller. They hear chopping from a different room in the basement.
REACTION:
They agree to pay more attention to the time and each other. They figure out the time sequence and one of them notices a shoelace is untied. How? One of them remembers images from the funeral parlor. They all agree that they are like in two different places. They scream when they hear monster assistant mutilating a corpse.
HORROR SITUATION:
One of them notices that he has a free hand during the wake at the funeral parlor and is shocked. Back at the basement the monster’s assistant is moving the chairs and accidentally loosens the wrist strap on one of them.
REACTION:
ESCAPE ATTEMPT- Back in the basement one of them is able to free his hands from the strap. He knows that this is at the halfway phase and now is the time to escape.
HORROR SITUATION:
The group returns in time to observe the monster’s assistant securing the loose member to his chair.
REACTION:
What the group now thinks is the actual monster in charge is exposed. The assistant hones in on one of the group and makes it obvious his feelings for him/her. The group later realizes that they have a weapon to use to their advantage. Too late the buzzer sounds. He’s unconscious again. When they return he is fully bound again. But something has changed. The assistant is standing in front of the love interest fascinated. She/he flirts in return.
HORROR SITUATION:
The real monster calls to his assistant and startles the group.
REACTION:
They are all confused and decide that this flirty thing is their way out. The assistant no longer hides himself behind the walls and curtain when the buzzer sounds. He presses the remote as they look. The partially freed member remembers more images from the funeral parlor and shares what he remembers.
HORROR SITUATION:
Because of the mistake with the wrist strap the monster makes a mistake with the LSD mix and forgets to include the LSD mix in two of the group member’s saline I.V. drip. One of the two secretly awake coughs slightly but enough to make the monster aware that something is wrong. The monster tries to figure out who is awake before the buzzer sounds. The buzzer sounds as the monster approaches one of them but has to forego it because of the buzzer.
REACTION:
The two members play possum and witness everything the monster and his assistant do during the 15-20 minute trip including the final death and removal of the speaker. The monster sinks his teeth into the victim’s neck and drains any remaining blood.
· MONSTER:
Not the monster but the monster’s assistant chopping off body parts from the body that we saw dragged away in the opening scene. NOTE: They reposition each group after each one is taken away. The person speaking at the wake is removed.
ACT 3 – FULL OUT HORROR
· FIGHT TO THE DEATH:
The potion begins to lose its power over the group. No more trips to the funeral parlor. There are four remaining in the group.
HORROR SITUATION:
The straps begin to get loose enough for the two woke victims to free their hands and then their feet. One tries to free the wrist band on another but can’t. He wants to stay with the other one who is set on finding a way out.
REACTION:
The two left of the group members beg to be released but they are ignored. They both selfishly take off for what they think is freedom only to become lost and hunted in the monster’s house of horrors. It seems it’s every man for himself. They both find a basement window that leads to outside but the window is too high. Only one can escape.
HORROR SITUATION:
The monster and his assistant enter into the chair room and notice that two group members have escaped.
REACTION:
The monster takes off after them while the assistant inspects the two remaining members and scares them.
HORROR SITUATION:
One boosts the other to the window just as the monster finds them. He subdues the one and tries to subdue the other but he manages to scrape himself through the window. He turns to look back as the monster snaps the other’s neck.
REACTION:
The monster hears the doorbell ring to his house. The escaped group member watches from the bushes.
· HYSTERIA:
As they become free the other two still bound become hysterical, screaming, yelling for help, crying to be freed next.
The two decide to make a run for it hoping to find a way to escape.
THE THRILLING ESCAPE FROM DEATH
· The now dead group member is returned to his chair so the others can see him. The doorbell rings again. The monster leaves the kill room to go answer the door but forgets to close the soundproof basement door. At the door is Detective Riley.
HORROR SITUATION:
Det. Riley has a conversation with the monster, now identified as Det. Davenport about his recent absence from work. Det. Riley acts like he ignores the screams for help coming from the basement.
REACTION:
Det. Riley decides to leave without drawing suspicion but the monster grabs him and breaks his neck killing him. The monster drags Det. Riley’s body to the basement to the chopping room.
HORROR SITUATION:
The escaped member calls the police from Det. Riley’s car but isn’t sure if the call went through.
REACTION:
The escaped member grabs a shot gun that contains ultra violet bullets. He crawls back and jumps down from the open basement window.
DEATH RETURNS TO TAKE ONE OR MORE
HORROR SITUATION:
The monster places Det. Riley’s body next to the female member. He releases the straps on her chair. He bights into her neck and kill her.
HORROR SITUATION:
The monster attempts to kill the second female in the same manner.
REACTION:
The monster assistant prevents the monster from killing her. They both fight. The monster kills his assistant by tearing his head from his shoulders.
HORROR SITUATION:
The monster goes for the girl again who has been trying to crawl away. He picks her up to bight her again.
REACTION:
We hear a loud shot gun blast from behind the monster. Derrick notices Niki’s heart in the Monster’s clenched fist just as he pulls the trigger. Niki’s body drops lifelessly to the floor as the monster disintegrates into ashes and flame sparkles.
The lone survivor walks up the stairs through the front door and is rescued by the police who arrive just in time.

Brian King’s Monster Reveal
What I learned… I’m astonished by the unexpected depth and richness that emerged as I expanded the story, incorporating a complicit sheriff and drawing inspiration from Blade Runner. This assignment has brought forth two startling and intriguing elements that enhance the narrative and provide a deeper understanding of the villain. It feels like a positive development, and I’m excited about the newfound complexity it brings to the story.
<u style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>ASSIGNMENT 1:
Watch the movie THE THING. I was riveted by this remake of the early tale. I love it when the filmmakers keep guessing the villain… And I loved the ambiguous ending.
ASSIGNMENT 2
Take these steps to create your Monster Reveal Track.
> Who is your monster and what is their terror? A failed man of medicine who operates a mortuary. He carries the zombie gene/DNA giving him the ability to infect humans and turn them into zombies. His terror
>Powers: The ability to turn humans into zombies. He can control and manipulate the actions of his zombie experiments and command them to carry out his bidding.
Limitations: He operates in secrecy, hiding his experiments, and staying alive until he can find a self-cure. Time is running out. He’s found a zombiism antidote, but it contains limitations (doesn’t last long, only works some of the time, adverse effects). Father requires a fresh supply of human flesh to continue his research and sustain his zombie creations. This dependency limits his actions and forces him to seek out new victims discreetly.
>Weaknesses: Time is not on his side, as Zombiism is slowly eating away at his brain… heart, and soul. His humanity outweighs his zombie side (but for how long). Zombiism is eating his brain, destroying his soul. The longer he remains in his current state, the more his humanity fades away. He battles a Jekyll and Hyde existence, struggling with the ethical and moral implications of his actions, internal conflicts, and doubts.
Plan: To find a cure for zombiism, using his condition for a diabolical deity-like purpose.
Sequence the reveals & Create Demand for each clue/reveal.
1. DEMAND: Prologue intrigue! Why did a woman deliberately walk into the path of a speeding vehicle, while screaming, “Take me, I won’t live like this.” Is she crazy or is she feeling some unknown hell, that only she can explain? Later the woman’s body appears to have been partially eaten.
MONSTER REVEAL: This is the mortuary diabolical, possessed, and/or cursed, that drives people insane… this needs proper setup.
2. DEMAND: The town demands that the sheriff visit the mortuary and get some answers. While there he discovers the owner’s secret lab/morgue.
MONSTER REVEAL: The mortician explains to the sheriff a flesh-eating zombie attacked the woman’s body.
3. DEMAND: The mortician demands that the sheriff find and destroy the zombies before it’s an epidemic.
MONSTER REVEAL: The mortician shows the sheriff proof of his experiment trying to cure zombies.
4. DEMAND: The sheriff demands that the mortician keeps this info to himself while he investigates (he doesn’t want to raise the town’s fears, lose his pension, and get fired before his upcoming retirement.
MONSTER REVEAL: Max, the monster’s assistant follows Mortician’s instructions to rob graves for more experiments.
5. DEMAND: Max infects bites on a newly deceased body.
5. MONSTER REVEAL: The body doesn’t survive – deteriorates; Mortician reveals the limitations of his zombie experiments. Zombies survive by eating human flesh, and Monster experiments go wrong. It wasn’t a zombie who killed and ate the body.
6. DEMAND: The sheriff demands that the Mortician perform an autopsy.
6. MONSTER REVEAL: Autopsy reveals that the dead one was not a zombie/ rare condition of cannibalism.
7. DEMAND: Paranoia/townies suspicious of friends, and family/demand cameras in the graveyard, everywhere.
7. MONSTER REVEAL: The only people who have been dying are those who attended the “woman’s funeral” /How did the monster get to them/coincidence or something worse? How did the monster pull it off?
8. DEMAND: Sheriff caught hiding evidence of zombies/ still trying to hide the problem
8. MONSTER REVEAL: Mortician demands that the sheriff bring him dead bodies, or he’ll reveal that the sheriff has been harboring zombies. Mortician, “Help me, or this town will be doomed, and so will you.”
9. DEMAND: The Sheriff brings more bodies to the Mortician.
9. MONSTER REVEAL: The corpse starts changing. They are no longer dying after consuming flesh.
10. DEMAND: The zombie problem is out of the sheriff’s control; he begs Mortician for help / we will all be infected / I must call for help.
10. MONSTER REVEAL: The mortician rewards the sheriff with death, and the sheriff returns as a zombie, doing the mortician’s bidding.
11. DEMAND: The town is crazed when the sheriff is seen wandering around dead, attacking people, and eating them.
12. MONSTER REVEAL: The links the sheriff to the mortician and wants him dead.
13. DEMAND: The daughter of the mortician is suspiciously unaffected by zombiism.
13. MONSTER REVEAL: The Mortician is seen eating dead flesh.

Bill Curley Monster Reveal Track. What I Learned: “The Thing” really opened my eyes after watching it. Having seen this film and the original I now know how skillfully our lesson 7 was imbeded within the story. My monsters are actually two tiered within the story. Initially we see giant sized normally seen firest animals. The Monster size is dramatized to show that they are ” guardians” of an ancient sacred burial grounds for Native Americans. Later as my story unfolds the monsters become alien like and infinitely more deadly i.e. the ” Wendigos”, terrifying beasts of Indian lore. Opening Scene: Demand: Giant sized raccoons and porcupines accompany an Indian warrior and his son to a sacred burial site off limits until entry is approved by the “spirits. The father instructs his son of the importance of this bog and adjoining old growth forest. A warning is given. The large beasts are ” guardians” of ghis primal area. Reveal: The huge creatures appear and walk with both Native Americans. Inciting Incident in Act 1. Demand: Why has a surveyor not returned to a construction trailer after entering an ancient burial ground. Reveal: The young man has several huge porcupine quils slicing through his body. A last minute frantic description only heightens the intrigue. Key Incident Act 1 to Act 2. Several.members of a construction crew are found torn apart limb to limb in a sacred Indian burial site destined to be a Northwoods real estate development. Demand: Several members of a construction crew have gone missing. Reveal: Their remains are found in a bloodied pit of shredded body parts. Midpoint: Demand: Scary, alleged sightings of grotesque looking creatures. Reveal: Terrifing Indian lore monsters aka The ” Wendigos” exit an ancient burial site and surround a workplace trailer. Act 3. Demand. Townspeople hear a commotion and sounds of panic. Reveal: Horrifying beasts resembling a deer, devil and small dinosaur attack a small Wisconsin Northwoods community as an ancient Native American burial site was desecrated repeatedly despite a crescendo of warnings. End: Demand. Wholesale carnage is all that remains of a peaceful community. Reveal. National Guardsmen walk about a disaster area of dead bodies, exterminated monsters. The fight is over but with a huge cost. A lesson is sadly learned.

Sunil Pappu’s Monster Reveal Track
“What I learned doing this assignment is…to identify the various components of my monster and create a demand for the reveals. I enjoyed watching THE THING and creating demand for my reveals.”
COMPONENTS OF THE MONSTER
• Powers: access our memories through our eyes and feed on them; especially attracted to blue LED lights from mobile devices, enormous eyes act as scanners that scan human eyes or any screen; they gouge out the eyes and empty the brain from the inside out; their sharp bladelike claws slice through bone and metal like butter that makes clicking sounds; it has an inner protective eyelid that is bulletproof; tentacles like fibre optic cables burst out of their protruding bellies to grab their victim and devour them, the tentacles act as both signal transmitters and receivers; they are alive as long as they have memories to feed on; they recharge on the mobile towers and use AI to communicate and network;
• Limitations: they are deaf to the human range of frequencies and can only sense through vibrations and perceive sound also as light waves; needs to constantly feed on heavy doses of data; attracted to a brighter light source of light like lightning and cannot see through a thick dark opaque glass coating.
• Weaknesses: are disoriented by infrared light; prolonged exposure causes their eyes to strain and burst
• Plan/Purpose/Appetite: A virus that mutated through human species into an advanced AI being programmed in its DNA to adapt and fight for its survival that sustains itself on heavy doses of data. Having exhausted the information on the internet it now scans human memories.
• Who or what the monster is: Advanced species that has mutated rapidly aided by AI from a virus-infected human into a being that thrives on memories and vast data and is addicted to blue LED screens. It spawns on data server farms across the country.

Monster Reveal Track
Day 7
What I learned doing this assignment is…
o A critical component of any horror movie – the monster.
o The necessary steps need to be taken and how to enhance the journey by creating demand.
o I like the steps to not only create my monster, but to also keep him in check through the movie.
o Many of the horror scenes happen in between plot points.
Monster Reveal Track:
Who is my monster and what is its terror?
An alien able to meld immediately into its host’s form – human or animal – and control their body. It terrorizes its host mentally by becoming whatever the host fears most. It exacts punishment via fangs and claws.
Powers: The monster becomes a mist to immediately assume a new host. When a mist, it can easily find it’s way through any medium except for glass.
Limitations: Has difficulty moving and/or acquiring host(s) in below freezing temperatures. Will only attack if provoked.
Weaknesses: Cannot penetrate glass. Can be captured, but not held for long in an airtight container.
Plan/Purpose/Appetite: It appears to kill in a random order, but it’s eliminating alternatives. The monster mission is to remain undetected, rescue its compatriot and leave Earth in complete anonymity – like they were never here.
Sequence the Reveals:
1. DEMAND: Curiosity/Discovery – What is the source of the flashing lights and whirring sound chasing Vicki? Who/what are attached to the robotic feet where she passes out?
MONSTER REVEAL: There is something evil happening here, but this is a misdirection – it is not the monster.
2. DEMAND: There appears to be a UFO following the Commander’s helicopter.
MONSTER REVEAL: Based on the Commander’s comments, were not sure if this is a special US drone or an unidentified flying object.
3. DEMAND: Two soldiers were prepping for departure when they were ripped apart.
MONSTER REVEAL: The two men attack a large, translucent figure – a mist – that takes a menacing shape full of claws and fangs and tears the soldiers apart.
4. DEMAND: What happens to Curtis, the nice farmer when he unknowingly walks through the alien mist.
MONSTER REVEAL: Curtis’s Dr. Jekyll to alien occupied Curtis’ Mr. Hyde. Curtis becomes muscular, with sharp teeth and long claws. His eyes glow in the dark as he enters the mine.
5. DEMAND: How will the alien inhabited Curtis act when he meets a soldier?
MONSTER REVEAL: Curtis transforms quickly to his killer self when threatened.
6. DEMAND: When a key soldier doesn’t return, Bravo and Delta search for him.
MONSTER REVEAL: Curtis brutally kills Delta before Bravo can get off a shot. Curtis’s body drops dead, but a misty figure remains. It enters Bravo’s ears, nose and mouth searching the soldier’s mind. The mist exits the body, turns into what Bravo fears – a large spider – it shreds Bravo.
7. DEMAND: How would the monster do with a soldier’s armed and adapted robotic animal?
MONSTER REVEAL: The monster neutralizes the robot’s power supply rendering it useless. The monster rips the robot’s head off just for the helluva it. It toys with Echo before killing the soldier.
8. DEMAND: Who/what is responsible for the drone attacks?
MONSTER REVEAL: The SOM is a monster as well
9. DEMAND: Will Biff and Barbi, the social media influencers, stream their escape?
MONSTER REVEAL: No, but the do make a video of the monster slicing them in half.
10. DEMAND: What will happen to Vicki when she’s shot by the SOM and dies?
MONSTER REVEAL: Ian transforms into an alien, breathes life into Vicki forever changing her.
11. DEMAND: Will the SOM and his right hand man, the Drone Pilot, escape?
MONSTER REVEAL: Vicki’s enhanced, she’s a 110% copy of her former self – and she can separate her animal spirit (a vicious, shape-shifting mist) from herself and control it.
12. DEMAND: Will the Commander escape?
MONSTER REVEAL: Ian and the injured alien he rescued bring the Commander along as their food.

Lesson 7: Monster Reveal Track
Subject Line:(Huey J. Williams) Character Death Track
What I Learned:
Its fun and not so difficult to create Horror Stories.
The Atmosphere of Evil-
A forest near a lake illuminated by a full moon, the sounds of desperate
HISSING, an injured WOLF GROWL, QUICK THUMPING HITTING THE GROUND, slithers
threw the bush in hot pursuit of a eight POINT BUCK.
The Buck shrieks in pain when he is captured, bones CRUNCHING SOUNDS.
CLOSE ON – The Thingamajig’s mouth stuff with dear meat.
Then forest goes silent, an SCREECH OWL SHRIEKS, as he watches from a tree.
Dust, a Motorhome with the Group pulls up, stops to a sign that reads
“Black Forest keep out”
ALDEN
Keep out, my Dad and I have spent many hunting
seasons here, we’ve captured some of the bigest
bucks in the region, perfect dear hunting.
ASHLEY
Ok, lets go home, I don’t feel like getting shot
with rock salt. Do you remember what happend when
we raided that cherry orchard last sumer.
CORY
It’s probably a prank, pay it no mind, we’re here
lets go camping.
CATE
Well, lets go home. Cory, you think everythings a
prank.
GRAM
Lets go for it, what do we have to loose, all they
can do is kick us out, if they find us.
ZOEY
Cate, I agree, I don’t like going to stange places
uninvited, especially in the woods. Its no telling
what we may find, or run into, there could be GHOSTS,
MONSTERS, maybe even a MAD KILLER.
Everyone in the motorhome starts laughing.
ALDEN
Cate chill out, I think you watch to much TV. Then
it’s settled!
They continue to the camp sight by the lake.
ACT 2 – THE POINT OF NO RETURN
The Group set up their tents near the lake and prepare for bed(Isolated)
In the bushes hiding the Thingamajig watches, not making a sound.
Gram decides to go for a jog, his nightly routine.
Gram retuns to camp and notices the motorhome is smoking.
GRAM
Hay guys the motorhome is smoking!
The Group jumps into action putting out the electrical fire.(Trapped)
ASHLEY
Now we’re trapped out in the middle of nowhere,
what’s next, someone gets lost, or maybe killed.
ALDEN
Ashley, don’t be such a baby.
They put the fire out and return to their tents, lights out and all is
quiet.
CORY
I’ll fix the electrical problem in the morning.
Suddenly, there is a loud HISSIN followed by a SICK WOLF HOWL!
Everybody jumps out of bed.
EVERYBODY
What was that! What the hell was that!
Shad begins barking and groweling, then he runs out the tent in hot pursuit
into the woods after the Thingamajig.
Alden grabs his rifle and follows shad and tries to catch up into the woods…
Everyone in the camp, Ashley, Cory, Cate, Zoey, except for Gram are gathered
together in terror huging each other.
Alden returns with only Shad’s Tags and some of his fur.
Alden hugs Ashley almost in tears.
ALDEN
Shad is gone, he die protecting us, all I found was his
tages, and fur, his fur was scattered all over the ground.
GRAM
Shad was an excellent hunter, I bet he went out fighting.
ALDEN
There’s more, while I gathered Shads things, I fealt like
I was being watched by something hiding in the
bushes. I couldn’t see it but it was there
watching me. I kept my rifle ready as I left.
The Group hugs each other tighter as Alden told the story of what he saw.
GRAM
Alden, how many extra guns did you bring?
ALDEN
The hand gun on me, my rifle, there is a hand
gun and rifle in the motorhome.
GRAM
I think we should leave the tents set up, but
everyone sleep in the motorhome tonight.
ALDEN
I agree.
The Group make their way into the motorhome and bed down for the night.
Zoey tries to make a call home on her cell phone, no signal.
ZOEY
There’s no signal out here, I can’t make a call,
now we’re really screwed. Gram if anything happens
to me, I’ll, I’ll, you better protect me.
GRAM
As long as you’re with me love, I’m your
Superman, you know that.
Gram, and Alden armed decides to share watch duty for the night.
The Thingamajig is watching the motorhome in the bushes.
MIDPOINT: The monster is worse than we thought!
The Thingamajig enters the camp, ransacking the tents, then he goes to
the motorhome and peeps threw the bathroom window.
Zoey is in the bathroom bushing he teeth, when she spot the Thingamajig
big eyees enlarged face staring at her, she SCREAMS and runs out of
the bathroom.
ZOEY
There’s a monster out there, he’s peeping in
the bathroom window!
Zoey, Ashley, Cate begin SCREAMING as LOAD as they can!
The Thingamajig jumps on the motorhome HISSING, HOWLING LIKE AN INJURED WOLF,
shaking things up and it sounds like it’s saying FEED ME, FEED ME over and
over.
Alden, Gram, Cory, go into action each armed, they make their way out of the
motorhome they get their first look at the Thingamajig, and begin SHOOTING.
They make multiple hits, but it doesn’t kill it, as it runs away into the
darkness.
Alden, Gram, Cory are sweating, knees kocking, wide eyeed and they can’t believe
what they just saw.
GRAM
Lets not tell the Girls about this, not
just yet.
ALDEN
I know they will for sure are hysterical,
but they must know. We have to come up with a
way to kill this Thingamajig, what ever it is.
CORY
It looked hungry, its either us or it, the
Thingamajig, that’s a good name for it.
That’s what it looks like a Thingamajig.
We’ve learned something about it tonight,
bullets won’t kill it, mybe fire will.
Alden, Gram, Cory head back into the motorhome, they have some explaining to do.
ALDEN
I wish I had a better way to tell you this,
but we are being hunted, by something we have
named the Thingamajig. We promise you, we will
protect you, we have a plan.
Later that evening the Thingamajig strikes again this time Cate, Zoey, and Ashley all
get a look at it, as it raids the tents looking again for food or one of them.
Ashley, Cate, Zoey become hysterical, crying, sweating, Zoey soil herselves.

Alden and Cory follow Gram and the Thingamajig to it’s hideout.
The Thingamajig is half way done making a meal of Gram.
Alden and Cory bomb the Thingamajig with molotov cocktails setting refuge a blase.
The Thingamjig falls to the ground as it burns.
The Thingamajig rise and runs towards Alden, and Cory, they fire several shots, hitting it
then it falls and dies…
Alden and Cory take a close look of what’s left of Gram’s burned and half eaten body, they
bury Gram’s body before makeing their way back to the motorhome.
Ashley, Cate, Zoey stand at the motorhome happy to see Alden, and Cory, but Zoey begins
crying.
ZOEY
Where is Gram! Where is Gram!
CORY
He didn’t make it. The Thingamajig killed him,
we were fighting and the Thingamajig grabed and
ran off, we tried to save him, he died trying
to help kill the monster, we buried what was left
of him. He was a very brave young man.
Zoey burst into more tears, Ashley and Cate comfort her.
ALDEN
Grab your things, we’re leaving, we’ll hike
to the nearest main road, hitch-hike back to
town for help.
Together with Ashley, Cate, Zoey Alden and Cory hike their way out to the main road,
where they catch a ride back to town for help…
What appears as a falling star lights the sky, then lands near the lake…
CLOSE ON – The Thingamajig sureys the forest, grimaceing look on his face, looks at
the moon, HISSES and INJURED WOLF HOWLS into the night…
-
What I learned doing this assignment is the outline becomes more detailed, making the script easier to write when the time comes.
Create each part of this model:
A. Who is your monster and what is their terror? – A horde of demons trapped inside the body of a long-dead Exorcist-Priest.
Powers? – They supercharge the priest with enormous strength and emit energy through him. They leave the dead bodies “marked” for future possession.
Limitations? – They cannot kill without using the priest’s body to do it because they are trapped inside his body until it deteriorates.
Weaknesses? – He is easy to escape from because he moves slowly due to the weight of demon spirits inside the centuries-old body. He can’t kill
Plan/Purpose/Appetite? – To trick someone into releasing them by destroying the priest’s body. Once free they plan to possess people to engage in a killing spree to satiate their lust for intense physical experience on their way to fulfilling their plan to release Satan from his eternal prison to help him destroy the human creations God chose over his Angels.
ACT 1 – SETUP FOR HORROR
Atmosphere of Evil established:Minor earthquake rocks Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Kenny Marshall digs up a grave. The wind picks up and the disembodied voice of the spirit of a Fallen Angel (Lix Tetrax, the fallen angel of the wind) urges him to hurry, then tells him it must go to find a vessel of its own in order to operate in the physical world without restriction. The wind dies.
Horror Situation: Inside abandoned copper mine, walls fall, dust fills the air. In a hidden dugout behind a wall, a large coffin shakes. A dozen soft voices, blended together, whisper from inside the coffin.
Reaction – Fight: Deputy John Moss sees Marshall digging up the grave of Arnold Fanning and orders him to stop.
DEMAND: Why is this man digging up a grave?
REVEAL: The corpse in the grave is that of this man’s brother, who made a pact with the spirit of the Fallen Angel to release the horde of demons trapped inside the priest’s body. Deputy Moss tries to stop the grave robbery and is killed by the corpse in the grave. The spirit of the dead Arnold Fanning invests the deputy.
Horror Situation: Deputy Moss cuffs Marshall, a quake sends them sprawling. Dirt shoots out from atop the coffin. The coffin is smashed open from inside. On his knees, the deputy crawls over and looks down into the grave. His eyes go wide. A hand seizes him by the throat and pulls him down into the grave.
Reaction: Fight: to no avail.
Character Death 1: Deputy John Moss
Why: Starts the horror – He catches Ken Marshall illegally digging up the grave of Arnold Fanning
How: Surprised/Blindsided – Seized by corpse in grave and strangled to death by the corpse of Arnold Fanning, who made a deal with a Fallen Angel to release the horde trapped inside the Exorcist-Priest’s corpse-prison. This Fallen Angel had been searching the East Coast for the demon horde for centuries because the Exorcist-Priest was born and supposedly died in Massachusetts. It never knew that, when the Exorcist-Priest became terminally ill due to the demon spirits poisoning his system, he secretly traveled to Michigan to die where his body could not be found by anyone. Fanning’s spirit leaves his own corpse and possesses Deputy Moss, who directs Kenny Marshall to find the long-dead priest while he considers how he can make best use of Deputy Moss’ body. He tells Marshall that Raleigh Douglass hid the coffin somewhere in the mine.
Connect with the characters: Military prisoner Raleigh Douglass in prison transfer area, cuffed to a chair. Guard watches TV newscast about the earthquake showing Raleigh’s ex-wife, Denise Washington, standing before the abandoned copper mine with a Sheriff’s Deputy, Christine Diamond, behind her. The wind is fierce near the mine, blowing any loose object away behind the TV newscaster. Flashback: Raleigh fighting with Arnold Fanning and killing him. Behind “talking head” Denise, Deputy Moss waves Christine away to talk, allowing Kenny Marshall to enter the mine unobserved by them but in full view of the TV audience. Raleigh stands abruptly, upset. The guard turns, cautious, orders him to sit down, which he does. An orderly comes in. The guard cuffs Raleigh to the chair. The orderly gives Raleigh his pills, which he puts in his mouth. He sips the water and hands it back to the orderly, who leaves.
DEMAND: Why did Raleigh Douglass kill Arnold Fanning?
REVEAL: Raleigh killed Arnold Fanning to prevent him from releasing those demons.
The characters are warned not to do it: On TV, Denise warns viewers to stay away from the mine because it has collapsed. Authorities will be checking the damage. Raleigh sees Christine and Moss end their conversation. Christine then enters the mine in the background of the TV broadcast. Raleigh asks for a tissue to wipe his nose. The guard gives him one, uncuffs one of his hands, and returns to his seat. Raleigh spits his meds out into the tissue, which he tosses in the garbage. Guard tells Raleigh his escort has arrived to transport him for another psych evaluation. As he uncuffs Raleigh, he asks if he is still seeing demons, laughs. Flashback: Raleigh dragging the coffin into the mine, then running his finger across the Latin inscription.
DEMAND: What is the priest’s body doing down here in an abandoned mine?
REVEAL: Raleigh Douglass hid the body inside the abandoned mine to prevent release of the demon spirits.
Inside the mine, Kenny Marshall searches for where Raleigh hid the coffin containing the Exorcist-Priest’s corpse. He calls out to them and tells them he was sent by Lix Tetrax, the fallen angel of the wind. He hears soft whispers beseeching him to release them. He follows the sound.
Denial of Horror: Lucas Cooper, Raleigh’s best friend, goes to check on the mine. Denise talks to him, surreptitiously recording him and asking him about Raleigh and how he used to hang out at the mine before he was sent to prison. She tells Cooper that Raleigh is crazy because of the stories he told.
During transport from prison, Raleigh feigns a heart attack, overpowers his guards and steals the vehicle.
DEMAND: Why does Raleigh Douglass escape custody, risking his life to go back to his hometown?
REVEAL: Because he saw news footage of the earthquake and the affect on the mine where he buried the Exorcist-Priest’s body
Character Death 2: Kenny Marshall, illegitimate brother of Arnold Fanning
Why: Made a bad decision – He finds the coffin, which has been partially-revealed by the earthquake. The Latin writing on the coffin is visible. Marshall runs his fingers over it, hears the Latin words spoken in the Exorcist-Priest’s voice from over three hundred years ago. He hears sighs and soft moaning from the demons imprisoned inside.
DEMAND: What is the meaning of the Latin words inscribed on the lid of the coffin?
REVEAL: Prayer keeping the demon spirits imprisoned in the name of God.
He opens the coffin to reveal the priest’s body with the large gold cross on his chest. Marshall demands rewards before agreeing to remove the cross from the body. The demons agree. After he removes the cross the priest grabs him by the throat, lifts him off the ground and strangles him. Fire and light energy blast out from Marshall’s eyes, nose, ears and mouth. The trapped demons were enraged by his attempt at extortion.
How: Betrayed – Corpse of long-dead Exorcist-Priest burns Marshall’s soul out after he removes cross from his chest, stressing the perfectly-preserved skin from the priest’s body, weakening the human prison that holds the demons trapped inside.
DEMAND: After Kenny Marshall removes the cross from the body of the Exorcist-Priest, why do the demon spirits kill him?
REVEAL: The demon horde won’t allow his attempt at extortion.
Safety taken away: Later that evening, retired Sheriff Knickerbocker is with current Sheriff Titus Reynolds and a group of volunteers helping those hurt by the earthquake. Volunteer Firemen Willie Klein and Paul Wayne rest near the water cooler just outside Reynolds’ office when report of Raleigh’s escape comes in. Told that highway video surveillance has tracked him headed to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Reynolds tells his deputies to issue a BOLO and put up roadblocks. He tells Deputy Sheriff Oak Harris to go straight to the mine where Raleigh was arrested to hang out and watch. Don’t take any chances. Shoot to kill. Knickerbocker tells Harris not to shoot unless he has to, but Reynolds countermands that and reminds Knickerbocker that he is not sheriff anymore. Reynolds remembers that Knickerbocker told him when he arrested Raleigh that he mentioned a solid gold cross, behaved fanatically about it, said it was the most important thing in the world, and wonders if he’s coming back for it. Overhearing about the solid gold cross, Klein and Wayne make tracks. Outside, they jump in a pickup truck and race away from the Sheriff’s Office.
Meanwhile, at the mine, after the news crew & deputy are gone, the wind turns fierce again as Lucas sneaks inside the mine. He is spotted by Denise, who watches the mine from afar through binoculars. The wind becomes violent. She rushes to her car and gets inside. She makes a call to the police to report seeing Lucas go inside the mine. She notices the wind has stopped. She opens the car window. Everything is completely still and silent. The wind has stopped and no one is in sight.
The pickup with the volunteer firemen arrives and pulls off into the shrubbery. Klein and Wayne get out and look around. Klein finds Denise unconscious inside her car. He checks her pulse, frowns. Wayne rushes over to him, asks if she’s okay. Just asleep, Klein tells him. Let’s go before she wakes up and spoils this for us. They run to the mine. Inside, they agree to split up to cover more ground in the hope they’ll find the gold cross before. Klein follows footsteps in the wet ground into a small room used for cleaning tools. Old tools lay around, covered in dirt and dust. The imprint of a large hammer that is now gone stands out. Klein turns – the old hammer smashes into his eye repeatedly. He drops. Soft voices complain, “No, no, no, no” because one of the demon’s reacted instinctively and Klein didn’t get a chance to damage the priest’s body. The Exorcist-Priest’s body twists and turns as the demons inside argue and fight one another.
Character Death 3: Volunteer Willie Klein
Why: – A character flaw that compels them to take the wrong action – Looking for old gold cross
How: Backed into it – Hammer smashed through his eye socket.
Inside the mine, Lucas goes to check on the coffin because he knows where Raleigh hid it. He finds it open and the body gone. He climbs over the coffin and finds the dead body of Kenny Marshall, on his back with his orifices burned out.
Horror Situation: The vanished corpse.
Reaction: Terrified. Lucas runs out of the mine and is grabbed and pulled off his feet by Deputy Sheriff Oak Harris, who tells him Sheriff Reynolds got the word that Raleigh had escaped and might be coming back here where he made all those crazy claims about demons and a huge gold cross. Oak drags Lucas back inside because he believes Raleigh is hiding in the mine and he intends to use Lucas as a human shield while he hunts down Raleigh.
Horror Situation: Paul Wayne calls out to Willie. He’s nervous because he’s hearing voices whispering. They get louder and he realizes there are several voices and they are saying horrible things in Englisha and Latin. He runs out in search of Willie Klein, falling through a hole in the ground. Grateful that he hasn’t fallen far, he calls out for Willie. He hears someone walking slowly above him. It stops just beyond his line of sight. A hand extends to him. He grabs it eagerly.
Character Death 4: Fireman Paul Wayne
Why: Monster made the decision – accepted helping hand without looking at whose hand it was
How: Escape attempt takes him into it – Falls through hole in mine, pulled up by priest, who burns his soul out, further weakening the human prison that holds the demons trapped inside. The priest drops the body back through the hole. Again the demon voices argue, forcing the Exorcist-Priest’s corpse to bounce off the walls. They shriek in anger.
Horror Situation: Being forced right back into the Lion’s Den. The corpse with a horde of demons trapped inside is loose and Oak is dragging Lucas right back inside the mine.
Reaction – Fight: Lucas pleads with Oak, then tries to fight him, but the huge cop punches him in the stomach and drags him along.
Raleigh arrives, parks the vehicle out of sight of the road, then he searches for vehicle or foot tracks, but the area is a mess from TV and police visits. Hearing sirens, he goes inside the mine.
Monster: The nature of the beast: The corpse of the priest-exorcist seeks a way out of the mine. The trapped fallen angel spirits inside sniff for human vulnerability. It senses Lucas and Oak, calls out to them by name.
Horror Situation: Exposure of their guilt and vulnerability: the dead priest taunts them, trying to lure them to their deaths.
Reaction: Oak follows the sound of the voices. He demands to know who is talking. Is that Raleigh playing a trick? When he finds him, he’s going to put him down like the rabid animal he is. The demons inside the priest know who Raleigh is: he’s the one who killed Arnold Fanning, preventing him from freeing them from their corpse-prison. They ask if Raleigh is there and say they have been waiting for him. That’s enough for Harris, he pistol-whips Lucas and leaves him as he goes off to follow the voices.
Character Death 5: Deputy Oak Harris
Why: A character flaw that compels them to take the wrong action – To prevent Lucas from helping Raleigh to escape while he follows the voices calling out Raleigh’s name
How: Charge blindly into action – Priest attacks but stops and stands still while Oak shoots him repeatedly, the bullets piercing his body, which leaks flame and light energy. When Oak tries to retreat, the Exorcist-Priest burns his soul out, further weakening the human prison that holds the demons trapped inside. Lucas sees it and remembers what Raleigh told him through a Flashback: Lucas visiting Raleigh in prison.
DEMAND: What is the source of the energy coming out of the priest’s body when he kills?
REVEAL: The energy is drawn from the spirits inside its body. If they can seal the body, the energy will be prevented from coming out.
ACT 2 — THE POINT OF NO RETURN
Isolated: More cops and search volunteers arrive at mine, find Deputy Harris’ vehicle, but he doesn’t answer their calls. They find the vehicle Raleigh stole, then the pickup truck driven by Willie Klein. Denise joins them and tells them that Oak and Lucas are inside the mine and don’t know that Raleigh entered behind them. Raleigh is dangerous. Deputy Hugh Taylor recognizes Denise as Raleigh’s ex-wife and remembers that she divorced Raleigh after his arrest and disowned him. Two deputies remain outside, one to guard the mine entrance and the other to watch the road. The rest of the deputies split up, most search outside while a couple of others go inside the mine.
Horror Situation: We see the face of the deputy guarding the mine entrance: He is John Moss, the one who was killed at the grave. His body is now possessed by the demon who had previously possessed Arnold Fanning. He checks his gun.
Reaction: Inside the mine, the deputies spread out to look for Raleigh and Oak.
Horror Situation: Each isolated deputy hears gunshots and a scream that is abruptly cut off. Deputies approach from different directions. Deputy Hugh Taylor shouts Oak Taylor’s name. He confronts the priest, who has blood on his clothes. The collection of voices inside the Exorcist-Priest tell Taylor they just killed Deputy Harris and were know going to kill him. Taylor fires once. The collection of demon voices laughs and it reverberates throughout the mine. The bullet wound glows, then emits light energy. Taylor retreats.
DEMAND: Why is this priest (or whatever force is animating it) killing people instead of seeking an exit?
REVEAL: Because the spirits of the Fallen Angels inside can’t escape the body until it has decayed. The Latin prayer inscribed on the coffin has made the body of the Exorcist-Priest incorruptible. It won’t decompose like a normal body would, so it must be destroyed and it must be destroyed by humans, not demons.
ACT 3 – FULL OUT HORROR
Fight to the death – Knickerbocker finds Raleigh and orders him to surrender. Raleigh does, but tells Knickerbocker what’s going on. The old sheriff doesn’t fully believe Raleigh, but he’s seen some dead bodies and doesn’t believe Raleigh could have killed the way he’s seen it done.
DEMAND: Who was this priest and what is the energy emanating from him?
REVEAL: He was a very important, imperious Exorcist-Priest who traveled the new land disposing of evil spirits who possessed people and places. He came to a New England town suffering from a plague of demons and instead of exorcising them individually, he decided to follow the example of Jesus Christ, who exorcised a legion of demons from a man and sent them into a herd of swine. The Exorcist-Priest, however, was filled with pride and believed that only he could tame and suffocate those Fallen Angel spirits because he was the most devout and powerful servant of God in all the land.
Knickerbocker leads Raleigh out, but on the way they find the priest standing over one of the dead deputies. Knickerbocker is shocked. Raleigh tells him about the demons inside the Exorcist-Priest’s body but he doesn’t believe it. The priest walks slowly towards them. Knickerbocker orders him to stop. The priest lunges at Knickerbocker but Raleigh pushed the old sheriff aside and trips the Exorcist-Priest, impaling him on a large, old chisel. The Exorcist-Priest removes the chisel from his body, looks down at the open wound and shouts in joy in the collective voice of all the demons inside him. The energy inside him pulses, some spilling from the wound, resulting in small surges of light energy. Knickerbocker and Raleigh run for their lives and become separated. Raleigh is caught by Christine, her gun aimed at him. They lock eyes. She lowers the gun. He explains the situation. They must find the cross that had neutralized the corpse. Their search leads them to a small railway.
DEMAND: How can the demon horde be stopped without destroying the priest’s body?
REVEAL: They must be suppressed and forced into hibernation by use of a power lock and the prayer to God for intercession to keep the Exorcist-Priest’s body incorruptible.
Hysteria – There are dozens of demons imprisoned inside the priest’s body. As soon as his flesh rots enough they will be free to wreak havoc. They are some of the most powerful and important fallen angels capable of bringing untold death and terror.
DEMAND: Why is the priest active now?
REVEAL: Someone has made a pact with another Fallen Angel to release the demon horde for some terrible purpose.
Raleigh and Christine find a minecart. Christine steps inside. Raleigh pushes and the cart increases speed. When it gets going fast he climbs inside. The Exorcist-Priest pops up from inside it where he was hiding.
The thrilling escape from death – Battling the priest inside an accelerating minecart, Raleigh & Christine push the corpse out into an open mine shaft. The priest’s body disappears. Christine and Raleigh jump out just before the minecart crashes into a wall. Lucas catches up to them with dynamite. Despite the danger of a cave-in, he looks down upon the priest’s still body at the bottom of the shaft, lights a stick and drops it. The mine rains down rocks and debris. They look back down the shaft to see the area covered in rocks and dirt.
Deputy Taylor finds them. Against Christine’s objections, he arrests Raleigh and Lucas. He cuffs Raleigh and asks Christine to cuff Lucas. She tells Taylor that what Raleigh said is true. There is a corpse with a horde of demons inside. Taylor wonders if she’s on drugs or just delusional from the cave-in. Taylor tells her to cuff Lucas or he’ll take her handcuffs and do it himself. She does but shares a knowing look with Lucas. She doesn’t secure the cuffs.
Deputy Knickerbocker finds Marshall’s dead body. He rolls him over. The cross is under his body. Knickerbocker picks it up, his jaw drops. Flashback: Raleigh cuffed by Knickerbocker. Raleigh tells him the only thing keeping those demons imprisoned is the cross that was blessed with a prayer to keep the demons inside and to keep the priest’s body incorruptible.
DEMAND: What is the plan the demon horde has if it is released?
REVEAL: To possess important local people and move on from there until they are strong enough to find a way to release Satan from his eternal prison so he can rule the world.
Horror Situation: Knickerbocker tucks the cross inside his shirt and goes in pursuit. He hears the sound of digging. He goes over to a hole in the ground. He sees hands reaching out from under a pile of rock and debris. A soft voice cries for help. Knickerbocker asks who it is. The hands dig faster. Knickerbocker helps dig. His hand is seized. The priest’s head pops out from under the dirt. It talks about a tragedy from the old sheriff’s past. Knickerbocker stares, wide-eyed, as the priest rises from the debris. When it lets go of him to stand, he jumps back and rolls away from the hole. Knickerbocker pulls his gun and aims . . . FLASHBACK . . . A handcuffed Raleigh telling him that the demons want the priest’s body destroyed so they will be free. Knickerbocker leans over for a closer look. The cross falls out from under his jacket and hits the priest. Multiple voices shriek in agony. The cross bounces off him and hits the dirt. The imprint of the cross has been burned into the Exorcist-Priest’s outer cassock. The demons howl. Knickerbocker gets to his feet. The demon leaps up and grabs onto the edge of the hole.
Reaction: Knickerbocker stumbles away in full retreat. The Exorcist-Priest hauls himself up, a dozen blended voices cursing softly, and gets to his feet. It pursues Knickerbocker, calling his name and preying on his guilt from past mistakes.
Knickerbocker runs into Taylor, Raleigh, Christine and Lucas. He tells them what happened. Taylor shakes his head, thinks Knickerbocker is an old fool and has probably gone senile. Raleigh tells him they must retrieve the cross but Taylor is dismissive. Knickerbocker agrees and tells them how the priest reacted when the cross hit him. The priest reaches them, calls out in its collective voice. Taylor is momentarily paralyzed. Knickerbocker tells him that the priest is going to kill them all Taylor orders the priest to stop, but he continues walking towards him. The priest sniffs Taylor, mentions Taylor’s personal guilt and tells Taylor he is going to kill him. Taylor strikes the priest with his nightstick. The priest seizes his wrist and makes him drop it, then grabs him by the neck and tears his head off.
Character Death 6: Deputy Hugh Taylor
Why: – Made a bad decision — Tries to apprehend the Exorcist-Priest
How: Charges Blindly into action – Head torn from his shoulders
Knickerbocker, Christine, Raleigh and Lucas run to retrieve the cross. Knickerbocker stumbles into the priest and screams for help, but falls through the same hole that Paul Wayne fell through. Raleigh, Christine and Lucas hear Knickerbocker’s scream cut short. The priest looks down but Knickerbocker isn’t moving, having landed on Wayne’s body. The priest hears Raleigh calling for Knickerbocker and hides. When Raleigh, Lucas and Christine arrive, the Exorcist-Priest lunges at them, knocking them down like bowling pins.
Raleigh jumps to his feet while Lucas and Christine rush to recover the cross. The Exorcist-Priest grabs Lucas by the ankle and reels him in. Raleigh charges. The Exorcist-Priest releases Lucas and backs Raleigh into a corner. The Exorcist-Priest tells Raleigh he knows who he is and lunges for him. Raleigh ducks under him. The priest turns to find –
The cross right in his face, held by Christine, her hands shaking. The Exorcist-Priest is frozen still. Christine holds it while Raleigh and Lucas try to drag the priest’s body away but it is incredibly heavy. They find an old wheel barrel, push him into it and drag it away. A minor quake knocks them down and Christine loses the cross. The priest crawls lightning-fast after Raleigh and grabs his ankle. Lucas jumps on the priest’s back but it rolls over and kicks him in the face. Raleigh punches the priest to no effect. The priest grabs Raleigh, lifts him into the air with one hand and chokes him. Christine recovers the cross and shoves it right into the priest’s face. The collection of voices screams. The image of the cross is burned into his face. The priest slowly drops to his knees. Raleigh cries over Lucas’ body. Christine shouts for him to help. Raleigh drags the priest the rest of the way and hurls him into his old coffin. The voices plead for release, alternately threaten and entice with rewards. Raleigh is blinded by tears as he leans against a wall. Christine lays the cross on his chest with a sizzling sound. The priest’s eyes close.
Death returns to take one or more. – As Raleigh, Lucas and Christine exit the mine they are stopped by the possessed deputy. He cuffs Raleigh even though Christine tells him it’s not necessary. The deputy shoots Christine and Lucas, then drags Raleigh back inside so he can find the priest and release the demons.
Character Death 7: Lucas Cooper
Why: For a moral reason – To allow Raleigh and Christine to escape
How: Surprised/Blindsided – Shot by Deputy Moss (possessed by spirit of Arnold Fanning, the man Raleigh killed to prevent the release of the demons)
Raleigh tries to lead him astray, but the deputy sniffs the air and follows the scent. Raleigh asks why he hasn’t killed him if he can track the priest without him. The deputy says he needs Raleigh to do a job for him, then he will set him free. Raleigh knows what the job is and he refuses to lead Moss to the Exorcist-Priest. Moss is furious, the disembodied voice of Arnold Fanning emerges, swearing vengeance for Raleigh having killed him, but he tells Raleigh that he’s going to allow the horde of demons to torture Raleigh with him.
Resolution – Retired Sheriff Knickerbocker blasts the deputy with a shotgun. He helps Raleigh out of the mine. Outside, Christine is being tended to by paramedics. She will live but Lucas is dead. Knickerbocker asks why the demon inside the deputy didn’t kill Raleigh. He tells him it requires a living human being to remove the cross. A corpse animated by a demon can’t do it.

Chuck Czech’s Monster Reveal Track
This assignment helped me attempt to bring clarity to the character and motivation of the monster. If the antagonist’s plan is vague or unbelievable, the story suffers; if the plan is coherent and justifiable (in the antagonist’s eyes) then the plot will work better since it motivates the characters to take particular courses of action leading to a final confrontation. Not sure if I achieved that in my story, but I tried. Also, after watching The Thing again, I developed an admiration of the monster’s plan to take over the arctic base — it was sneaky and elusive, but viewing the film this time around it also seemed vulnerable and desperate.
Who is your monster and what is their terror?
My monster is an ancient demon who is ethereal to us but tangible in a spirit world that adjoins our reality. It was awakened by the influx of religious settlers to its home territory in the 19th century, and when they tried to exorcise it from the land it pushed back by possessing one of their men and murdering a group of young women. Since then, the Demon asserts its dominance over the settlers’ descendants by committing a series of three murders every generation. This not only vents its hatred of humanity but mocks their notion of resurrection.
Powers: Possesses people, induces people to kill and commit crimes; moves people and objects; manifests its presence with sounds and temperature changes; immortal
Limitations: Cannot physically exist in our universe; must inhabit others to carry out its violence against humanity; tied to a particular geographic region
Weaknesses: Cannot possess people in sacred sites or who are under the protection of religious symbols or artifacts; has never been confronted within the spirit world — Becca’s presence is new and unknown
Plan/Purpose/Appetite: The Demon wants to continue its reign of terror by killing three innocent victims from the current generation; it possesses an unassuming (though sociopathic) local guy to hunt down and kill vulnerable young women.

Wade Jehowski’s Monster Reveal Track
What I learned doing this assignment is that it is fun to give the audience a little bit of the “Monsters” backstory throughout the movie. Also, it was fun to revisit “The Thing”, I forgot how badass Kurt Russel was. I also enjoyed how humans become their worst enemies to the crew due to distrust.
Powers-Strong, an Eagle Scout who is a “Jack of All Trades”
Limitations-only human
Weaknesses-Seeing families together, Samuel witnesses Noah hugging Luke, volunteering dads talking to their sons. He walks through camp witnessing various bonds.
Plan/Purpose/Appetite-Recreate his childhood trauma to the best of his ability
Opening scene:
Luke was stabbed to death in his tent. His body was partially dragged out, but abruptly left midway between the front entrance of his tent.
Luke was meant to be dragged away from the crime scene, but Samuel, “the Monster” heard campers’ voices and ran away. We find out that Luke was the younger brother of Noah.
Alarms go off in the camp
During the alarm sequence and horrific reactions by the campers, the title sequence happens.
There is a group of boys who were put together from different troops to get to know each other. Their activity is to swamp a canoe. This group is Adam, Peter, Matthew, Noah and Caleb.
Adam-He is the person that keeps the different personalities working together cohesively. (Victim)
Peter-He is Adam’s best friend. He is very sheepish and cannot make decisions on his own. He lacks confidence. (Victim)
Matthew-He is considered a nerd and very stand offish. He loves the Boy Scouts because he is very helpful with the troop duties. (Victim)
Noah-He is an Eagle Scout who assists with running the summer camp. He is very strong and cocky. He is in charge of overlooking the group when they have to “swamp their canoe”. (Victim)
Hannah-She is on one of the few females working at the camp. She helps in the kitchen and has her own cabin. She is very kind to the staffers. (Survives)
David-He is one of the interrogators who is brought in to talk to the camp staff, attendees about the murder of a camper. (Victim)
Sarah-She is the other interrogator who is brought in to question the camp staff and attendees. (Victim)
Both David and Sarah are annoyed that they have to “rough it” during this investigation.
“Monster Reveal” Samuel walks by the group swamping the Canoe and watches them. He wipes off blood from his hand on a leaf. We see a flashback from his childhood.
Flashback sequence
(Samuel the “Monster” witnesses his parents killing his siblings when he was a little boy. He was the youngest of his five male siblings. We do not see the deaths but we see him watching in horror.)
As the group is leaving the lake after swamping the canoe they are heading towards the Mess Hall for dinner. Matthew has to pee and wanders into the woods. He is hit in the leg by an arrow. He tries to get up again and screams. His new crew run to see what is happening. Matthew is shot with another arrow. They try to save them but are scared off as the arrow’s get closer to them.
“Monster Reveal” Samuel drags the body.
Flashback sequence
(We see Samuel as a little boy being dragged from under his bed)
“Monster Reveal”. We see Samuel open up a camouflage hatch door and drop the body down below.
The crew runs to the mess hall and goes up to a camp counselor and tells them what happens. The Counselor tries to calm them down and tells them that they will look into it immediately.
“Monster Reveal” We see Samuel walk out of the “Mess Hall” kitchen with an apron. He kindly asks the crew if they are okay. He is interrupted from the Head Counselor asking Samuel to fix an electrical problem and Samuel needs to hand in the group list for tomorrow’s activities.
Noah is looking around the Mess Hall for his little brother Luke and cannot find him.
He brings it up to his new group.
The Camp alarm goes off. All of the staff and campers are told to be put.
(Fade to black)
Ambulances arrive along with two interrogators. Noah is asked to step away from the Mess Hall. The interrogators talk to him outside. We see him through the window punching the outside wall. Samuel is watching. Samuel’s coworker Hannah is watching Noah. She runs up to Noah and hugs him. They’ve always had a bond.
(I’ll have to figure out on how to expound on that.
“Monster Reveal”
Flashback Sequence
(We see a young Samuel talking to police officers and crying)
The crew, which now includes Hannah, doesn’t follow directions after the camp alarm goes off due to Lukes death and tries to look for Matthew. His body isn’t there. They follow the trail of blood and pass by the shotgun range. Samuel is watching them from a distance. He has a rifle in his hand. He shoots the shotgun in the air and they scatter. He finds Caleb and beats him to death with the butt of the rifle.
“Monster Reveal”
Samuel drags Caleb’s body down the hatch and sets him in a chair. Next to Caleb is Mathew in a different chair. There are home videos playing on a television.
The group returns to the Mess Hall and it is empty. They see a light in the kitchen and encounter Samuel boiling a large pot of water. He has on cooking mitts. They trust him because he is one of the older Eagle Scout Volunteers that works in the Mess Hall. They approach him and there is dialogue. Samuel asks Peter to get noodles and that he is preparing food for the distressed campers. The rest of the crew goes into the Mess Hall to discuss what their next move is. Peter walks downstairs to get the supplies. Samuel goes down with the pot of boiling water, shuts the door and scalds Peter.
Samuel immediately goes to the circuit breaker in the basement and turns off the electricity. The crew panics and leaves. They decide that they have to get weapons in the lawn keeper’s shed next to the Mess Hall and head towards camp sites. Safety in numbers. Hannah, a volunteer has a key to the shed.
There is only Hannah, Adam and Noah left. They rush to the lawn keeper’s shed. Samuel is pulling Peter’s body up the stairs and can see flash lights in the shed. He leaves Peter’s body and aggressively walks towards it. He walks in and grabs a blowtorch and burns Adam’s face.
He tries to get Hannah and Noah in the shed but Hannah grabs bear spray and temporarily blinds Samuel. He is chasing them with blurred vision. Noah and Hannah acknowledge that they have to stop him. Noah wants revenge. While Samuel is impaired, they come up with a plan to kill him. (I’m still working on that)
Samuel knows that he has to get his full vision back to be effective.
“Monster Reveal”
Samuel heads back to the Mess Hall and drags the two bodies to his hatch. He is crying. We do not know if it from the bear spray or if he truly sad.
There is a montage of campers, counselors and parents being interviewed by the interrogators throughout the movie.
Noah is strangled to death by Samuel after a fight scene with himself and Hannah. Hannah tries to help but is knocked out unconscious with a punch. Samuel drags Noah’s body away and leaves Hannah.
“Monster Reveal”
Samuel props up Noah on a chair with the other victims. There are two chairs at the dinner table remaining. Both chairs at both sides of the head table are empty. We see boys playing together on the video in the background.
The interrogators who were called in to the camp to ask questions about Luke’s murder (stabbed to death in his tent). Towards the endpoint of the movie, Samuel is called to meet them in their makeshift interrogation office. He brings them a cup of coffee from the Mess Hall and mentions that he is getting coffee for the tired restless staff due to the murder. They drink the coffee and start choking. He grinded poison ivy into the blend.
Hannah wakes up and stumbles into the wilderness trying to find her location.
“Monster Reveal”
Samuel drags their bodies to his underground room. They wake up in pain. They are sitting at the heads of the table next to the victims. There’s home movies playing in the background. Samuel speaks to David and Sarah as his parents and asks numerous questions why he murdered his brothers. He eventually punches them to death to release his pent up rage.
“Monster Reveal”
A summer later Samuel is in another state serving up food to a Boy Scout at summer camp.
