    2. Decide to intentionally use the High Speed Writing Rules throughout the rest of this program.

    Rule 1: Understand writing in
    drafts.
Rule 2: Choose speed over quality
    for EARLY drafts.
Rule 3: Allow yourself to start
(and continue) without all the answers.
Rule 4: Use empowering self talk.
    Cheer yourself on.
Rule 5: Give yourself freedom to
    write without criticism.
Rule 6: Keep moving. Don’t allow
    yourself to ever stall out.
Rule 7: if it doesn’t come to
you, give it to your creative mind to process.

    3. Use the High Speed Writing Rules as you create your Beat Sheet.

    Pass 1: Organize your Structure
    and Transformational Events.
    Pass 2: Add slug lines.
    Pass 3: Add placeholders and
    additional scenes.

LESSON 7 KIM REED’S HIGH SPEED BEAT SHEET

THE DESERT SONG OF ANA VICTORIA BY KIM REED

WHAT I LEARNED FROM THIS ASSIGNMENT IS HOW TO LOOK AT THE UNDERLYING STRUCTURE AND HOW VISUAL SCENES NEED TO BE PLANNED TO MAINTAIN CONTINUITY WITH THE STORY.

    Act 1: 30 pages

    Opening:

    EXT. DESERT – NIGHT

A still figure lying in the desert. An animal comes close to the figure. Ana Victoria is singing low or making noise trying to sing. A sharp sound scares it away.

A woman is remembering what happened and dreaming.

INT. TRUCK OR SUV – NIGHT

    TE 1

AV is in a truck speeding through the desert. Sounds of the desert and the air rushing by in the night. In the front seat two men on either side of our heroine Ana Victoria. The men are joking with her that she would be happy in a place where they have fun. At first visual the audience cannot tell that she is not a friend or familiar to them, but a woman being driven across the border by traffickers. The driver says they are in the United States now. Near where the church group leaves water she asks. Yes, he confirms, but we are not stopping there tonight. The two men start to molest AV. The two children are asleep in the back of the truck, drugged with a mild sedative. AV objects and starts to fight them. This was not the deal her husband agreed to. But he is dead and she has no money to pay for this trip across the border. One man tells her that they have a buyer for her little girl and some interest in her little boy, so that will repay the debt she and her husband owed them. One tells her she is not a virgin, so she should get some practice. They want to recommend her for a nice brothel outside of Chicago. AV’s resistance escalates. It becomes difficult to drive. She kicks the man in the passenger seat and he opens the door to the truck, it swings open but the driver does not stop. AV is trying to kick him out of the open door or cause the driver to stop. The men start to punch her to control her violent response. She hits back. In frustration the man in the passenger side grabs her and flings her from the truck. The truck slows down but does not stop. The lights recede into the night. AV is knocked out laying near the truck tracks.

    EXT. DESERT – NIGHT

A woman is dreaming. She imagines her children. Her husband, Alejandro their father, loved them. He loved her. In her dream she sees her family. She sings to them. They are happy. Then something jumps in the darkness.

INT. A ROOM IN THE SOUTH – DAY – FLASHBACK

Her memory shifts to a crisis. Her husband Alejandro says they must leave. Their lives are in danger. His life is in danger here. The decision to leave home and head for the United States was not easy. The local gang controlled the southwest city where they lived, where Al, a local police officer, became a political thorn in their side trying to organize people to reject and resist them. His captain is dead. There is no way to defend the station. It is hopeless. The husband used contacts online to find a trip north. They will have to get on a train heading to the borderland where they will get off in Nogales. There are men there who can make the crossing to the United States easier, with a military vehicle that can withstand the desert.

EXT. RAILROAD TRACKS AND OPEN CAR – DAY

    TE 2

Flash to La Bestia, a train called the Beast, where the family is squeezed into a small space in a crowded car. The train is full of foreigners from south of the Mexican border. No one will follow them on this route or imagine they are among so many desperate people going north. Sounds of horror, of women crying because they are being raped by men on the train. Her husband stands watch over his family. The children are afraid, but they sleep next to their mother.

    INT. GUEST HOUSE – DAY

    TE 3

In Nogales, they find a guest house that will rent a room to them until they can cross. Alejandro goes out to find information. He returns and tells AV he wants to go and see the border which is about 40 miles from their location. He will hitch a ride with a local, then walk the last 10 miles at night. Maybe they can save money and cross on foot. AV should stay in the guest house until he returns.

    INT. GUEST HOUSE – MORNING

    TE 4

EXT. GUEST HOUSE YARD – MORNING

Inciting Incident: In the morning there is some commotion outside. The guest house owner tells AV that her husband was found dead in the desert. She places her hands over the heart. They are willing to bury her husband on credit, but this will increase her debt. Alejandro made contacts who know the guest house. They know she is waiting for them. But she does not know who anyone is.

Optional: AV identifies her husband Alejandro- or the local officer hands her his backpack that has his id.

    TE 5

EXT. FRONT OF GUEST HOUSE – AFTERNOON

Turning Point: The guest house owner tells AV that their things are out front. Men are coming to take them across the desert to the United States. AV and the children carry backpacks. A truck pulls up. A man gets out. He approaches AV and the children. He has a bottle with water in it. He tells her that the children should drink something before they start the trip. It will help them sleep and deal with the trip. She realizes he is insisting that she give them some of the bottle. To help them sleep, yes? Yes, he tells her. They carry the children to the truck. The man orders AV to ride up front with he and the driver.

    EXT. DESERT – MORNING

Morning in the desert. Someone is pouring water from a plastic bottle on AV’s face. There are three people speaking English. This is the United States, one says. We don’t want you to die here. The group helps get AV into their vehicle. She mumbles that she needs to find her children. The group look at one another. There is no one within miles because they have done a circuit looking for migrants. One points out the deep tire tracks. A powerful SUV went through here. AV mumbles, they took my children. God protect them, a member of the group says. Another says quietly, we can’t catch them and if the patrol gets to them first, they will go into child protective services and get a temporary adoption. AV passes out.

    Act 2:

    INT. CHURCH – DAY

AV is cleaning a church in Arizona. She is working as a domestic and she volunteers to help the church where she was rescued. (She is doing penance over losing her children.) She meets an older man who is praying, Manuel Guerrero. His wife died two years ago. He is retired from the sheriff’s department. He asks AV if he can help her move the furniture. She tells him her husband was also a police officer. He died on the trip to the US. They have coffee. Manny discovers that AV lost her children who were taken north to Chicago by traffickers. She tells him their story. She wants to go north and search for them. Nothing else is as important as seeing her children again. He is interested in AV and helping her. He feels protective toward AV and he wants her to find him interesting. He tells her he can make some calls and see if there are any records of her children being taken into the system.

    TE 1

    INT. HOUSE – NOON

After Church on Sunday AV accepts his invitation to come over for something to eat. He puts a map on the table and talks to her about Chicago, how far it is by train or highway, where Mexicans live in La Villeta and Pilsen. He offers to take her north where they can ask people in the Mexican communities if they know how to find her children.

AV is impressed with how Manuel cares for her by helping her, listening to her. She knows they both need love. They begin a passionate affair. The search is something they can work on together. It revives his sense of purpose and mission. Manny grows stronger loving again.

INT. CHURCH – AFTERNOON LATER IN TIME

    TE 2

    AV marries Manuel.

    EXT. CHICAGO STREETS – DAY

Plan in action: AV and Manuel make trips to search for the children. They get some information about where the gangs who control the desert around Nogales have sold under-age migrants as laborers in the Chicago area.

    INT. CHICAGO ORGANIZATION – DAY

    TE 3

AV finds contacts in organizations that help immigrants reunite their families. They involve her in conversations about strategy and put out messages online with information about her search. There are people and places that are new, where all share the label of immigrant. The people they meet encourage her. She feels real hope, but there are thousands of people who lost their relatives on the trip north, generations of people who have a connection to this experience and understand loss. AV meets people with stories about the immigrant experience.

    INT. HOTEL ROOM – EVENING

Midpoint Turning Point: Despite the frustration of not finding her son and daughter, AV vows to go on. Manny convinces her to rest back home with him so that she can keep up her strength and think through their next moves in the search.

INT. HOME IN AZ – DAY

Back home, she keeps in touch with the immigrant organizations, helping when she can. One day a woman calls to tell her that she thinks she knows where the traffickers left her children. AV goes out into the desert and prays. There is hope.

    Act 3:

    EXT. CHICAGO – DAYS

AV and Manny explore dead ends, one or two dangerous situations, but do not find Gael.

    INTS. – DAYS

AV goes to work for a temp agency. She sees how exploited people are in the city.

    INT. CHURCH – DAY

    TE 1

Someone from a church organization thinks they may know her daughter’s stepparents, a couple that applied to adopt and were rejected because of their age and some hostility toward new immigrants. Eventually, AV finds Carmina, who was adopted by an older business couple in Chicago.

    EXT. CHICAGO STREETS – DAYS

    TE 2

Rethink everything. Carmina wanted to find her real mother. She wants to join her mother’s search for her brother. They start searching together.

INT. HOME IN CHICAGO – DAY

New plan: Carmina enlists her stepparents who reveal how they found her.

EXT. LA VILLETA STREETS – DAY

Carmina uses the information to follow leads to organized criminals who do business in the immigrant enclaves of the city and travel to the borderland where their connections bring in people and illegal products.

    INT./EXT. CHICAGO DAYS

    TE 3

Turning Point: Huge failure / Major shift: People in the community tell AV that she is attracting the attention of the FBI and authorities, bringing too much attention to them by hostile officers. There are many people who are not related to her search who need to hide their origins or their taxes or many things that the authorities could use to hurt their families.

EXT./INT. CHICAGO STREETS AND STOREFRONTS – DAYS

AV persists in harassing some gang members. AV and her daughter are almost hit by gunfire from some unseen shooter. AV discovers her connections are telling her to go home now. This will get worse. One or two swear they will keep their eyes open for her.

    INT. CHICAGO HOUSE – DAY

Carmina decides to stay with her stepparents instead of moving to Arizona to rejoin her mother, but the two form a real relationship that is not going away.

    INT. AMTRAK TRAIN – DAY

With half of her search completed, AV returns to Arizona with mixed feelings. In part, she cannot abandon the search for Gael because that would be abandoning part of herself, her baby.

    ACT 4:

INT. CHICAGO ORGANIZATION OR CHURCH – DAY

    TE 1

Carmina meets a woman who knows the gang members. She tells her that there was a young boy who the gang leader adopted in his own family because the child was so attractive, a real devil doll. AV gets a call from a police officer who she met in Pilsen.

    INT. POLICE STATION – MORNING

    TE 2

The police believe Gael is being raised by a man associated with a burglary and car theft ring that helps move drugs for a cartel. The leader of this group has a history of being seen with older boys who are identified as his children who then disappear. They tell AV that Gael may be dead. AV must go and find out if Gael is still alive.

EXT. STREETSCAPE IN CHICAGO – DAY

    Climax/Ultimate expression of the conflict

    TE 3

AV runs past a series of places she saw before, looking for the place the police describe. She arrives at a lot where several cars are lined up as if they are going to be shipped somewhere. She waits patiently out of sight behind a grass mound or wall. A car mover truck arrives. A man gets out of the cab. He moves to the line of autos. He starts one to place on the carrier. AV sneaks closer to the cab of his truck. A young boy jumps out of the truck cab and moves toward the place where AV is watching. Gael meets AV. It is a surprise. He does not yell. She asks if he knows who she is? Yes, he remembers that she is his mother. He does not yell. He greets her as mother. But he does not attempt to hug her or approach her. He tells her that he loves his family here. He was told that she abandoned them in the desert on the way north. That she made a deal to give up her children to pay off debt. His adoptive father is a successful man. His father is dead. Did she make that deal or not? Gael knows that she did, even if she did not understand what it would mean. It was AV’s fault that she lost her family in the desert. She is harassing him and his family. She has to stop asking for information or she may be hurt. No one wants to disrupt their relationships. Gael is beautiful, healthy, but menacing, groomed to do more evil as he grows older. Crushed, AV watches as Gael returns to the truck and jumps into the cab. The driver is finished loading. He jumps in and the truck leaves the lot. Dust and emptiness confront AV now.

    INT. CHICAGO HOUSE – EVENING

AV considers killing his new family to fulfill her revenge, but her daughter’s love stops her from going on a suicide mission.

    Resolution

    TE 4

    EXT. EMPTY LOT – DAY

AV enlists the police in a major bust of the gang member who has Gael. Gael hates AV and will not surrender to the police. Gael escapes with another gang member.

AV accepts that Gael and Carmina have their own paths. She found them again. Her vendetta would never make up for what people experienced while trying to survive at the mercy of traffickers and exploiters.

    EXT. DESERT – AZ SUNSET

AV is watching the desert as shadows deepen. A woman is singing the love song that AV sang to her family and on the night of their separation. The music grows louder.

AV is joined by her husband Manny who tenderly puts his arm around her shoulders.

What is love? The desert in her heart may never entirely close. Perhaps they all died on that trip north and were revived, reborn in a new day where there was more hope.

    Tasha’s High Speed Beat Sheet

Doing this assignment, I learned: that I want to accept the rules of the High Speed Writing process, but the rule that proves hardest to follow is Rule 5. I must be actively diligent about keeping criticism and self-doubt at bay.

I confirm I listened to the Empowerment Audio.

I confirm that I’ve decided to intentionally use the High Speed Writing process throughout the rest of this program.

Pass 1: Organize your Structure and Transformational Events.

    Pass 2: Add slug lines.

Pass 3: Add placeholders and additional scenes

    Act 1:

    Opening:

INT. BETHANY’S CHILDHOOD BEDROOM – DAY

TE 1 – Deacon Anders performs a gnarly exorcism on Bethany and roses start to bloom all around her.

    EXT. RESTAURANT – NIGHT

Bethany goes on a terrible date that has some strange but subtle (ignorable) supernatural elements to it. The guy leaves the date while Bethany is mid-sentence.

    Inciting Incident:

    INT. CHURCH – DAY

TE 2 – Brad, an old friend from elementary school, sends a request to Bethany via her dating app. She’s working with Deacon Anders on her computer doing something for the Church at the time and he sees it. He warns her to think twice about responding.

[Placeholder] Bethany goes on another disastrous date. She checks her dating app and sees that the guy left a bad review. As she reads it, she sees a message pop up from Brad asking her to coffee. She tells him she doesn’t think it would be a good idea. He says he understands and asks if she can recommend a spot.

    INT. COFFEE SHOP – DAY

Brad shows up and asks her if he can buy Bethany a coffee. They catch up and a romantic connection is sparked. He asks her out.

    INT. CHURCH – DAY

TE 3 – She gets into her first fight ever with Deacon Anders over not going on the date with Brad even though they sparked a romantic connection during their coffee catch-up. Bethany criticizes him for being passed up for bishop even though that’s all he wants and he has the added advantage of having performed an exorcism.

    Turning Point:

    INT. RESTAURANT – NIGHT

TE 4 – Bethany is stood up by Brad who leaves a cryptic message with the restaurant hostess.

    Act 2:

    INT. CHURCH – DAY

Bethany apologizes to Deacon Anders for what she said about him not being a bishop and tells him he was right about Brad. He tells her that it’s ok if she is not cut out for dating and urges her to stop dating or at least give it a long rest.

[Placeholder] Something has to happen that makes her want to break her old pattern of forgetting and moving on. Maybe she sees a post about a former classmate’s wedding or maybe she sees a happy couple walk out of Deacon Anders office thanking him for the excellent relationship advice. Maybe she has a dream that some unseen force tells her it will never let her go. She decides to pursue Brad.

    New plan

    INT. APARTMENT – DAY

She tries contacting Brad but can’t track him down.

    INT. COSTCO – DAY

TE 5 – She chases after an ex suitor on the job at Costco to find out why he stopped seeing her and ends up watching a tape of her exorcism in the breakroom with the guy and his coworkers.

[Placeholder] There needs to be a montage of her interacting with different guys and all of them showing her the same video.

    EXT. FARMHOUSE – DAY

Bethany goes to her parents’ farmhouse and asks them if they are sending people the tape of her exorcism. They tell her the only person who made a tape of that was Deacon Anders.

    Midpoint Turning Point:

    INT. RECTORY – DAY

TE 6 – Looks for Deacon Anders in the rectory and sees bouquet after bouquet of rotting roses. The Cleaning Lady says she has no idea where they come from, they just keep appearing.

    Act 3:

    INT. COFFEE SHOP – DAY

Bethany connects with Koju on her dating app and sets up another date.

TE 8 – Deacon Anders finds her and has a friendly chat with her. Bethany excuses herself and goes to the restroom, leaving her laptop open.

    New plan:

    INT. HEALING CENTER – DAY

TE 9 – Bethany meets with Koju. He tells her that her suspicions were correct and he received a video of her exorcism. He tells her that the entity is still attached to her and it’s growing stronger.

INT. NEW AGE SCHOOL – DAY

TE 10 – First lesson at a New Age school, Bethany connects to her inner God power and sees Demon 23.

INT. NEW AGE SCHOOL – DAY

TE 11 – Bethany uses Cosmic Mind Telepathy to connect with Deacon Anders, but Demon 23 sends her an image of a pentagram.

INT. NEW AGE SCHOOL – DAY

TE 12 – Bethany uses transcendental awareness to project a message of peace and love to Brad.

    Turning Point:

INT. DEACON ANDERS’S CHAMBERS – DAY

TE 7 – Breaks into Deacon Anders Chambers and finds a pentagram, a book of conjuring spells, and other occult items. Deacon Anders knocks Bethany out and kidnaps.

    Act 4:

    INT. BETHANY’S SOUL – DAY

TE 13 – While unconscious, Bethany travels into her soul and invites Demon 23 to meet her there. She shows him that she can send him back to his origins, but he strikes up a deal with her to let him get back at Deacon Anders.

    INT. CHURCH – NIGHT

Bethany wakes up and her church to find herself restrained on the altar. Deacon Anders has just played a video (same video Bethany watches at Costco) of his exorcism of Bethany for the congregation including the Bishop and Cardinal.

    Climax/Ultimate expression of the conflict

    INT. CHURCH – NIGHT

    INT. BETHANY’S SOUL

TE 14 – Deacon Anders conjures Demon 23 and has it repossess Bethany in a demonstration of his power. He says that he will now cure her with exorcism, but Bethany telepathically projects Demon 23 into members of the congregation while protecting them with her Inner God Power. Demon 23 shows them how Deacon Anders used the occult to make Demon 23 do his bidding so that he could ascend the rank of the clergy and become the Pope.

Chuck Czech’s High Speed Beat Sheet

What I learned — write fast or die in quicksand. I’m committed to use these High Speed Writing Rules to get my script done at record speed.

    ACT 1

    INT./EXT. RONAN’S CAR – TRAVELING – NIGHT/DAY

Ronan Cambridge drives on a lonely desert road at night, the radio keeping him awake. He seems to be on a solitary endless journey.

The next morning, Ronan navigates heavy traffic with ease, compulsively talking his way through every turn signal and lane change. A road rage driver flips him off; Ronan cheerfully gives him a thumbs up.

    EXT. CONSTRUCTION SITE – MORNING

When Ronan’s delayed at a road construction site, a high tech capsule in his trunk comes to life, blinking lights and hissing vapor. Only when Ronan jumps the curb and drives through a ditch does the capsule become inert again.

    INT./EXT. RONAN’S CAR – TRAVELING – DAY

Ronan continues his solitary journey, stopping for no more than an hour. During one stop he’s able to nap, eat, brush his hair and go again. At another stop he gets his oil changed by a friendly mechanic, who apparently services the vehicle every 3500 miles.

FLASHBACK – INT. LABORATORY – NIGHT

Ronan has flashbacks to when he placed the capsule in his trunk — in a smoking, ruined laboratory. Dead people are scattered on the floor — a scientific research team — including Paulina, a woman he likes, and an old man, his father.

    EXT. SMALL TOWN – DAY

INCITING INCIDENT: Ronan visits a small town he seems familiar with (How do we know this? Why is this town important? Is it a meeting place for the research team? A pick up point for his father?)

TE 1: Ronan nearly hits a woman in a crosswalk. It’s Paulina. But it’s not. Ronan knows she died. He’s rear-ended by an aggressive driver — a Stranger — and then an SUV plows into the Stranger’s car. Alarmed, Ronan allows the ersatz Paulina to ride away with him.

    INT./EXT. RONAN’S CAR – TRAVELING – DAY

The woman tries to convince Ronan that she’s Paulina, but is not 100% convincing. She wants to talk about the capsule in the trunk, which Ronan refuses to discuss.

Ronan adapts to having a companion, eventually allowing Paulina to drive so he can have a proper sleep.

    FLASHBACK – LABORATORY – DAY

Ronan dreams of the laboratory, where he was a lab assistant and his father was chief scientist. Paulina is among the staff.

    EXT. REMOTE ROAD – DAY

Two Strangers try to run Ronan off the road, but Brendan arrives in his SUV and fights them off. Ronan sees that the body of a Stranger is not human, but an engineered organism that looks human.

    Act 2

    INT./EXT. RONAN’S CAR – TRAVELING – DAY

TE 2: Despite Ronan’s protests, Brendan abandons the SUV and hops in the car. He drives away with Ronan, Paulina and the capsule. Ronan doesn’t want Brendan aboard and becomes defensive, feisty.

Brendan breaks the news — he and Paulina are not the people Ronan knows — they’re from an alternate version of Earth that had been conquered by a hostile species — the very same species that’s trying to destroy this version of Earth by introducing a deadly invasive organism through the capsule device.

PLACEHOLDER: Set ground rules for the capsule — it’s a kind of bomb that’ll release a monstrous organism.

    EXT. TRAFFIC STOP – DAY

TE 3: When Brendan’s inexperience allows the capsule to partially wake up, Ronan proves himself adept at driving stealthily and taking care of the capsule.

PLACEHOLDER: What kind of situations can Ronan excel in — Talking his way out of a ticket? Taking a random exit to keep the capsule quiet?

    INT./EXT. RONAN’S CAR – TRAVELING – DAY

Brendan insists they return to the abandoned lab to figure out a way to shut the capsule down; Ronan thinks this is a mistake because hostile parties would make this the prime place to look for them.

    INT. RUINED LAB – NIGHT

They discover the lab and find the chamber where Paulina and Brendan came to this Earth. They also find evidence that other entities followed.

They’re able to review records downloaded from the alternate Earth from which Paulina and Brendan escaped — they watch a video that shows the destructive capabilities of the organism.

A group of Strangers find them and nearly capture them, but Ronan escapes alone in the car, leaving Paulina and Brendan on their own.

PLACEHOLDER: How do Paulina and Brendan escape?

    Act 3

    EXT. SMALL TOWN – DAY

TE 4: Understanding his solitary journey is pointless, waits for Paulina and Brendan at the small town.

FLASHBACK Ronan remembers being with his father the day the project was approved as a private venture — it happened at a headquarters of a private organization.

Paulina and Brendan arrive and Ronan drives them all away.

    INT./EXT. RONAN’S CAR – TRAVELING – DAY

Ronan proposes a new plan — that they return to the project headquarters to get access codes to reprogram the capsule device to destroy whatever’s inside — the only catch is it’s in the heart of a big city.

    EXT. CITY – DAY

Ronan drives them to a congested city where their slow place threatens to activate the capsule. Ronan has to enter the headquarters and is forced to trust Brendan with the capsule.

    INT. NEW LAB – NIGHT

TE 5: PLACEHOLDER: Ronan implements the new plan involving new people and a new laboratory.

    Act 4

    INT. NEW LAB – NIGHT

Against Ronan’s protests, Brendan tries leading the new team — but fails.

TE 6: Ronan fights Brendan to prevent him from saving his own skin and jumping over to a different version of Earth in the multiverse, thus destroying this world.

Ronan prevails, and Earth survives. (Needs work (-: )

    Resolution

TE 7: Ronan is confident enough to go out on his own and invite Paulina to join him.

Joy Geldard-Smith’s High Speed Beat Sheet

What I learned doing this assignment is… because of the groundwork I’ve laid in the previous assignments, getting this basic outline wasn’t so tough. It is only about half as many scenes as I need, and there’s still a bunch of stuff I don’t know, but that’s why screenwriting is a process, so I’m OK with that. It’s still progress!

    1. Listen to the Empowerment Audio – DONE! :o)

    2. Decide to intentionally use the High Speed Writing Rules throughout the rest of this program.

Rule 1: Understand writing in drafts.
Rule 2: Choose speed over quality for EARLY drafts.
Rule 3: Allow yourself to start (and continue) without all the
    answers.
Rule 4: Use empowering self talk. Cheer yourself on.
Rule 5: Give yourself freedom to write without criticism.
Rule 6: Keep moving. Don’t allow yourself to ever stall out.
Rule 7: if it doesn’t come to you, give it to your creative mind to
    process.

I agree to intentionally use the high speed writing rules – done is WAY better than perfect (because perfect doesn’t exist!).

    3. Use the High Speed Writing Rules as you create your Beat Sheet.

Pass 1: Organize your Structure and Transformational Events.
    Pass 2: Add slug lines.
Pass 3: Add placeholders and additional scenes.

    Int. MADISON’S WORK – DAY

Madison excelling at her boring accountant life. She is being given a promotion (so we know she is talented and special). She calls her bestie – who pleased but calls her boring? Says she’ll be stuck at the accountancy firm forever.

    Ext. CAR DEALERSHIP – Day

Madison impulsively buying a bright red convertible to prove to people that she is exciting. The dealer asks what the occasion is and when she explains, he practically calls her boring too. She says the car was calling to her and that she isn’t boring, and does a voice where the car talks back and tells her it doesn’t let boring people drive it. Something like that.

    Int. PLACEHOLDER – DAY

[Something else here that makes her realise she has to change. She goes to celebrate with her bestie and as they’re going out, some related child calls her boring or asks her if she wanted to be boring when she grew up? Then at the bar she also gets told she’s too hot to be an accountant because accountants are boring? Everyone knows that!]

    Int. JOSE’S APARTMENT – Night

[Do I need a set up for Jose? He’s psyching himself up?]

    Int. MADISON’S APARTMENT – MORNING

Madison calls in a sick day.

    Ext. streets – Later

Madison enjoying her new car, talking to it like a friend, and feeling crazy and spontaneous.

Int. puzzle rooms reception – Later

Madison greeted by reception, saying she’s always wanted to do something like this. They are rushing and not really listening to her. She is shoved into a room and the door locks. The receptionist then says ‘oops’ but can’t open the door.

    Int. puzzle room – continuous

This will need to be intercut somehow – maybe with folks outside? – to stop it from getting too boring.

She meets Jose, who tells her to get out. She obviously can’t. He tells her about his project. She calls him pretentious. They waste a lot of time fighting, and then she basically tells him tell will end up locked in there unless he bucks his ideas up. He paints, refusing to work with her, and she solves the puzzles that he can’t.

She says that his work looks like he’s playing it safe.

int – puzzle room reception – Later

They emerge from the puzzle room to meet Jose’s manager, who spills the beans that the whole thing was livestreamed. Madison is even more furious, even though he says it was a hit.

Int. MADISON’S WORK – The next day

Madison goes into work, complete with accessories trying to show that she’s still sick. She receives a call (via switchboard) from Jose’s manager, who asks her to do another puzzle room. She says don’t call her again.

int. local news – That same night

Madison is having a TV dinner and sees footage of ‘Local Artist Jose and Mystery Woman’. Cuts to bestie, parents and her manager all watching with the same disbelief. [And the cute kid, if there is a cute kid in it.]

int. MADISON’S WORK – The next day

Madison goes into work and is promptly fired!

    ext. streets – Day

Madison driving home with the car, asking the car how she’s going to pay for it.

    int. PLACEHOLDER – Later

What is a non-creepy way for Jose’s manager to have tracked her down to speak to her again? Sure, he called the office and they said she was fired, but they wouldn’t give out her details. Probably need to set something up with Jose about a favorite coffee shop, or comfort food, or something like that. ???

He convinces her to do more puzzles and agrees to a 50% split, thinking it won’t last long. She says she doesn’t know how he can represent someone like Jose, and she’s only doing it because she got fired after just buying a sweet new ride so needs the money.

int. puzzle room 2 – Later

Madison and Jose do another puzzle room together. Sparks fly. Jose asks her about what she really wants to do and says now is the time.

    int. arts college – Evening

Madison has secretly signed up to comedy writing classes/stand up.

    int – puzzle room 3 – Day

Another puzzle room in the same city. Learning about each other and starting to laugh a little.

    int. restuarant – Later

Madison and Jose are having a good time after finishing the room.

    int – puzzle room 4 – Day

    Jose spontaneously paints Madison.

    int – restaurant – Later

Jose’s manager says that the fans are loving the new painting and there are lots of rumors. Madison isn’t that happy, though admits she likes the painting.

int – arts college – Evening

Madison getting some feedback on her work.

    int – placeholder – Day

Madison’s bestie shows her all the speculation online about her and Jose. She says they’ve been getting on better but he’s still a pretentious douche. Someone films it and puts it on the internet, threatening the whole thing?

    int. JOSE’S APARTMENT – Later

Jose sees the footage of Madison slating him after his manager calls to point it out. He’s upset but pretends he doesn’t care because he doesn’t like her anyway.

    int. PLACEHOLDER – Later

Madison meets Jose (maybe at the comfort food cafe?) to apologize. He says it stings so much because there’s some truth in it, but explains why he seeks validation. She tells him about how everyone always calls her boring. He talks about his professor and what she said when they broke up. They have a moment, or maybe even kiss? Jose also tells her about a new exhibition he’s working on?

Int. MADISON’S APARTMENT – The next day

Madison thinking about what happened with them the night before. She’s running numbers and trying to figure out whether or not to quit. She knows she can’t go back to being an accountant, and her bestie points out that no firm would hire her right now anyway. Can’t keep working with Jose but has no option.

    int. art gallery – Day

Jose’s Manager has arranged a meeting with an important client. He asks Jose to do something totally out of character. Jose refuses. Manager and Client are not happy. After the client leaves, Jose gets fired.

    int. MADISON’S APARTMENT – Later

Madison and Jose catch up. She supports his decision. Says she’s ready to try her stand-up routine and organizes a gig.

    int. PLACEHOLDER – Later

I guess something needs to happen here before she actually does the gig? Another obstacle to getting there?

    int. comedy club – Night

Madison does her first ever comedy club. No one comes along except Jose, who is really sweet to her when she bombs. Maybe everyone keeps heckling her about her relationship with him?

int. jose’s family home – Day

Madison and Jose head to his hometown to get away from the attention. He explains what’s happened and his family are really supportive of them both.

    int. art gallery – Later

Jose’s new show opens in his hometime. Madison tries to get critics to come, but only local papers show up.

int. jose’s family home – Later

Jose asks Madison to do one last puzzle room. Says he’s got a sponsor lined up and they could both use the money and a win. She says OK.

int – puzzle room romance – Day

Madison goes into the puzzle room blindfolded. Jose is painting again. She realizes all the answers to the clues are linked their relationship. At the end Jose proposes, she says yes.

int. jose’s family home – Later
