    Kevin Lobo’s Monster track reveal:

“What I learned doing this assignment is…?”

I learned that creating a clear plot and sequence is so critical to leaving out blanks in the plot having ventured ahead without planning. In creating a monster reveal track, the significance of coming to a suspense filled reveal requires clear thought in dropping in the clues throughout the script.

    A. Who is your monster and what is their terror?

The monster is the resurrected evil spirit of a serial killer, Jason Hughs of the village from a few decades back. Jason escaped the judicial punishment but was killed by vigilante justice – the killer never having been caught.

Only the older generations, including the old parish priest, Fr. Augustus, and a reclusive, retired detective, Giovanni, know about the events that occurred. The newer generations have been shielded from these facts and there is an unspoken ban on discussing those terrible times.

    What are its powers?

    The
monster/evil spirit acts through the teens it possesses. It can amplify the
strength of the teens exponentially causing immense physical harm to the
teen themselves and to those around.

    What are its limitations?

    The
monster/evil spirit can only exist in the humans it possesses. It’s
physical acts of violence and terror, both physically and psychologically
are manifested through the possessed teens.

    What are its weaknesses?

    The
monster/evil spirit is afraid of religious objects, the priest, and in the
    vicinity of the village church.

    What is its Plan/Purpose/Appetite?

    The
monster/evil spirit seeks revenge for having been used in his physical
life to carry out the nefarious acts of the two men who used him to conduct
    their evil/voodoo acts.

It seeks revenge for having been murdered after escaping judicial justice.

It is enraged as its head was stolen from its grave after it’s burial.

    B. Sequence the reveals.

Throughout the movie, we look for the identity of the evil spirit through the eyes of FBI Detective Julia Edwards who has been dispatched to the village to help solve the case and stop the killings.

The audience sees the evil spirit at work in the opening scene but do not know anything else about it.

The village does not see the possessed killings until Ruth’s public killing at the midpoint but find the erupted grave with the initials JH at the start, and suspect that he is an evil spirit now (they stay hushed about it out of fear of the spirit and do not even take his name).

Detective Julia is unaware of both facts, and facing a hostile village must solve the puzzle piece by piece completely unaware, and skeptical at the start that the killings could be the work of an evil spirit or a monster.

1 After the opening scene killing, when Bradley is discovered the next day crucified upside down on a tree with his head missing, there are moments of silent glances exchanged among the village elders, with half-finished whispers of “he is back?”, creating a doubt that they know something.

CLUE: A CRUCIFIXION AND A MISSING HEAD

2 The elder villagers find the erupted grave of JH and begin to protect themselves and their houses with holy objects.

CLUE/DEMAND: THE ELDER VILLAGERS KNOW SOMETHING BUT ARE HUSHED ABOUT IT.

3 When details of the first death spread out, we see Tom Monaghan, a rich elder of the village, partly disabled, suspiciously scamper from the pub in fear of the crowd.

CLUE/DEMAND: TOM HAS SOME CONNECTION TO THE KILLING AND IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZES THE MODUS OPERANDI OF THE KILLING. WHAT IS IT?

4 Throughout the killings and the demonic activity, we are aware of an eerie chant echoing in the background as if someone is controlling the spirit.

CLUE: IS THERE SOME OTHER FORCE AT WORK AS WELL?

5 When Sarah, the second teen is killed, in the same manner, on her 19th birthday, there is a vicious secretive confrontation between the retired detective, Giovanni, and the old priest, Fr. Augustus, with Giovanni accusing Fr. Augustus of black masses and for being responsible for the deaths, again.

CLUE: THERE IS SOME HISTORY TO THESE TWO AND IT GOES WELL INTO THE PAST.

6 When Detective Julia investigates the two crime scenes, she finds no traces of blood on the victims’ clothes nor on the ground, leading her to start believing the possibility of a spirit at work as in the taunts of the villagers as if she can fight the underworld.

CLUE: FOR A DETECTIVE TO FIND NO TRACES OF BLOOD AT THE KILLING SITE LEADS TO THE POSSIBILITY OF A NON HUMAN ELEMENT.

7 The remaining 4 teens meet up secretly despite being locked in by their parents and become aware of the pattern, killed on their 19th birthday. They immediately suspect that Ruth is next while she is with them and flee from her.

CLUE: THE TEENS HAVE BEEN LURED OUT OF THEIR HOMES BY THE NORMALLY WILD RUTH.

8 We see Tom flee to Fr. Augustus for help, casting doubt on both.

CLUE: WHAT IS THE RELATION BETWEEN FR. AUGUSTUS AND TOM AND WHAT SECRET DO THEY HIDE?

9 When Julia tries to find friends of the two teens killed, their families keep them locked away.

CLUE: DESPITE PUSHING HER TO SOLVE THE KILLINGS WHY WON’T THE PARENTS LET JULIA TALK TO THEIR TEENS IN OBVIOUS DANGER.

10 Ruth’s family decide to escape with her after being pushed by her grandfather who will not say why except that he seems certain she is next.

CLUE: THE GRANDFATHER KNOW SOMETHING. HE IS ALSO THE FORMER REGISTRAR. DOES 19 HAVE SOMETHING TO WITH JASON’S AGE?

11 When Julia investigates the death of Ruth’s family as they tried to escape, she becomes certain that the spirit has a deep connection to the village and has a very specific target and aim.

CLUE: THE POSSESSED RUTH, SEEMINGLY NORMAL BEFORE HER 19TH BIRTHDAY DRIVES HER DEAD FAMILY BACK INSTEAD OF FLEEING AND SAVING HERSELF.

12 Julia finds flaws in Ruth’s story of how her family was killed. She suspects it was Ruth herself in her possessed state.

CLUE: A TEEN COULD NOT HAVE WITNESSED SO MUCH KILLING AND ESCAPE UNHURT.

13 Aware that Julia is on to it, the spirit begins to torment Julia through the possessed Ruth, with incomplete messages of “bring it back”, “they will pay”, etc. The messages it leaves tell Julia that it is somebody known to the village, that it is a spirit at work through possession of the teens and seeks revenge and something more.

CLUE: THE EVIL SPIRIT COMMUNICATES DIRECTLY – IT WANTS REVENGE AND WANTS SOMETHING ELSE BACK. HAS IT BECOME HER ALLY?

14 Julia has been asked to begin her investigation with Giovanni and Fr. Augustus. It’s a nonstarter due to Giovanni’s unexplained hatred and hostility towards the priest further deepening her doubts about some relation to the past.

CLUE: A LOT OF ANSWERS COULD BE FOUND IN WHAT TRANSPIRED BETWEEN THESE TWO OLD MEN. HOW DOES SHE UNLOCK THEM?

15 Giovanni tells Julia to bring Tom in to stop the killings and Fr. Augustus defends Tom.

CLUE: GIOVANNI KNOWS SOMETHING DEFINITE, LEADING JULIA TO LOOK FOR MORE OFFICIAL RECORDS.

16 When Julia looks for the records from the original case investigation, she finds the file burnt but finds small clues leftover and the name Tom.

CLUE: THE POLICE RECORDS ARE DESTROYED BUT THERE IS HOPE IN FINDING MORE INFORMATION IN THE JUDICIAL RECORDS.

17 When Ruth is publicly killed, Julia has to act to pacify the revolting village. She decides to arrest Tom and in the raid on his house sees a picture of Tom, a very young Jason and a mysterious third in the shadows. She sees the initials JH on the picture.

CLUE: A DEFINITE LINK BETWEEN TOM, JH AND THE EXISTENCE OF A THIRD ENTITY. A YOUNG LAD JASON – IS IT SOME LINK TO THE 19TH BIRTHDAY KILLINGS?

18 Julia decides to exhume the erupted grave marked with just a JH in a bid to find the identity of the killer spirit. A rusty old belt on the headless skeleton that matches the figure in the picture at Tom’s place gives her a first solid connection to the mysterious JH and Tom.

CLUE: THE GRAVE HOLDS ANSWERS AND WHY IS THE HEAD MISSING!

19 Julia also finds a strand of short blond hair in the grave. However, the picture in Tom’s house shows both Tom and JH with dark hair.

CLUE: A STRAND OF BLONDE HAIR IN A DARK HAIRED MAN’S GRAVE.

20 The headless corpse in JH’s grave, answers the puzzle of what the spirit may be after and why the heads of the teens go missing after being killed.

CLUE: WHERE ARE THE MISSING HEADS OF THE TEENS?

21 Julia finds an envelope in the thrash around the grave. It is the envelope in which the spell was mailed to Kimberly which she may have dropped off as the teens escaped on the opening night. She has to confront Kimberly’s family to be able to question Kimberly.

CLUE: A MOST DEFINITE CLUE TO WHERE IT ALL BEGAN.

22 Kimberly slips Julia the spell page with the initials JH hand scribbled on the printed page further deepening the mystery that the second round of killings have been deliberately set in motion.

CLUE: A TORN PAGE WITH THE SPELL, THE HAND SCRIBBLED INITIALS JH. A PUZZLE COMING TOGETHER.

23 Julia also finds a match between the handwriting on the envelope mailed to Kimberly and on other envelopes mailed to Tom. She is convinced that the spirit may be the one behind the mailings or there is third mysterious element in the picture.

CLUE: WHO IS THE MYSTERIOUS ENTITY THAT MAILED KIMBERLY AND TOM.

24 Julia has to confront the fact that if only Tom and JH worked together in their evil acts as claimed by Tom then there must have been that third mysterious figure who must have dug up the head as Tom is partially invalid.

CLUE: HOW COULD THE DISABLED TOM HAVE DUG UP A GRAVE AND TAKEN THE HEAD? WHY IS TOM TAKING RESPONSIBILITY EVEN THOUGH FR. AUGUSTUS VOUCHES FOR HIS INNOCENCE.

25 Julia finally manages to bring Fr. Augustus and Giovanni together after Ruth’s death and confronts them with her findings. She is able draw out the rest of the story from the two but still unsure if it is JH back as a spirit.

CLUE: GIOVANNI STILL BELIEVES IT IS TOM AT WORK.

26 The missing head still remains a mystery – where is it? Julia is refused permission to raid Tom’s house again as the killings continued even after Tom’s arrest. Why would the Sheriff not allow it?

CLUE/DEMAND: TOM’S HOUSE STILL HOLDS A LOT OF ANSWERS TO SOLVING THE CASE AND STOPPING THE KILLINGS.

27 In a final deadly night, venturing alone, secretly into Tom’s house, Julia has to battle deadly killer dogs, spirits and the possessed Kimberly. As she falls deeper and deeper into the house, the basement and crypts below, viciously attacked by the possessed Kimberly, Julia ends up finding the secret black Mass chamber from where Tom conducted his evil activities. She finds Jason Hughs head, identified from the bullet hole on the forehead as she heard from folklore, from the vigilante justice meted out to him and his signature crooked jaw.

CLUE/DEMAND: DID THE POSSESSED KIMBERLY HELP JULIA IN FINDING JASON’S HEAD HIDDEN DEEP IN THE CELLARS IN TOM’S HOUSE.

28 When Tom is arrested, the echoed murmurings begin to drive other prisoners crazy. Julia suspects that the bible Tom reads might be the rest of the spell book from which the page to Kimberly came. It turns out not to be.

CLUE: THE SPELL CHANTING MURMURING IS CONFIRMED BUT WHERE OR WHO IS IT COMING FROM?

29 Julia becomes aware that all of her moves have been foreseen and the only one privy to those is the silver haired village sheriff. Tom himself displays an inexplainable dread of the Sheriff during his interrogation taking on all the blame himself. In a quiet moment of realization, she clicks on to the fact that the Sheriff is the third, who may also have shot Jason Hughs on his release to protect his identity and removed the head from the grave for further evil acts.

CLUE: THE SHERIFF IN THE ONLY ONE PRIVY TO ALL OF JULIA’S INVESTIGATION.

30 In the final fight at night, in the graveyard, as Julia tries to return Jason’s head, to save Kimberly about to turn 19 at midnight, Julia finally sees the full picture. The Sheriff and Tom arrive and prevent her from putting back the head. In a final bid for revenge, Jason’s spirit storms into Tom . Kimberly is thus spared from the crucifixion and survives. The Sheriff the most powerful behind the three is accused by the spirit of having condemned them all.

31 In a bid to save Fr. Augustus (conducting an ill-equipped exorcism), from the possessed Tom, Giovanni shoots Tom but the Sheriff escapes – a seed to a future sequel.

      R Whitney Monster track

What I learned: Better track of the monster to hold the terror

      A. Who is your monster and what is their terror?

Powers? Large, powerful, relentless, difficult for bullets to penetrate

      Limitations? forest cover

Weaknesses? freezing, weak neck, poison, disease

Plan/Purpose/Appetite? It eats anything and multiplies.

      B. Sequence the reveals.

      The pets are missing

The first attack is heard but not seen in the lab

The second attack only shows the powerful front arms grabbing the victim

The third attack reveals the whole monster

Act 3 shows how they uncharacteristically aid each other

      C. Create Demand for each clue/reveal.

The third killing show how the scientist uses her knowledge of the creature to attack it at it’s weak neck

The next attack shows how they are bullet resistant

The scientist remembers how in nature these monsters are susceptible to disease

      2. Lay that over your current outline and fill in each clue/reveal using the tag “Monster Reveal:.”

    Eve Williams’ Horror Plot

“What I learned doing this assignment was that a successful paranormal horror story must push the characters to incredible levels of terror before they act.”

My Monster is the failed developer who committed suicide in the model home.

Powers – Varied poltergeist activity; ability to control the weather; conjure animals; create mirages; shape shift.

Limitations – Diminishing power over powerful weather forms.

Weaknesses – Can be destroyed by lighting/fire.

Plan/Purpose/Appetite: The Monster wants his house back. By any means necessary.

ACT 1 — SET UP FOR HORROR

    Atmosphere of Evil Established –

Moonless night in the Mojave Desert. Far away from civilization, an older pick-up towing a loaded trailer heads down a deserted road.

Horror Situation: They are lost, and have been for a while.

Reaction: Tired and confused, they consult the map again. Eventually…

The truck’s headlights illuminate a worn sign: El Mirage Heights. Dimly lit homes line the short street.

    Connect With the Characters –

Inside the truck is Alberto, a worn Hispanic man in his early 30s, Maria, tired and 26, 5 months pregnant; Jesus, coke bottle glasses wearing 5 year old; Bonita a fat old Chihuahua, and Lolita Bird, a vocal green Conure parrot

Horror Situation: Jesus, Bonita, and Lolita Bird sense evil in the house.

Reaction: Jesus won’t come near the house, and Bonita barks and Lolita Bird jungle yells.

DEMAND: Apprehension – They should be overjoyed when they reach their new home but why won’t Jesus and the pets go near?

MONSTER REVEAL – Jesus and the pets know there is danger.

Typical tract home; it was the model home for the El Mirage Heights subdivision.

Horror Situation: Alberto proposes to Maria, shoving a key ring with the house keys on her ring finger. In doing so, he scratches her finger, which drops blood.

Reaction: Maria is pleased, but considers the dripping blood a bad sign.

Sheet draped furniture is inside. The group works to grab suitcases and settle in.

    Denial of Horror –

Maria says that the house is so far out. Alberto says that she saw the neighbors’ homes and they won’t be alone.

Horror Situation: Alberto attempts to get a cell signal.

Reaction: He locates one while standing in the middle of the street.

    Safety Taken Away –

Before dawn, Alberto is picked up by a co-worker. They’re off to Northern Nevada to work construction for a week.

Horror Situation: Jesus hears a knocking at his window. He looks out but sees no one. Then knocking at the front door, where a black eyed little boy stands.

Reaction: Jesus asks Maria if he can let him in. Maria believes it is Alberto, who has forgotten something and tells Jesus to let him in. So he does.

DEMAND: Curiosity – Who knocks at the door so early?

MONSTER REVEAL – The Black Eyed Children are an American contemporary paranormal legend that the Monster can emulate. The Black Eyed boy is only seen outside the house, but Jesus admits he invites him inside.

Horror Situation: Maria quickly dresses and goes to the living room. Confused when she doesn’t see Alberto, Maria asks Jesus where he is.

Reaction: Jesus tells Maria that a little boy was at the door but he left.

Horror Situation: Maria and Jesus go outside to find the boy’s home. They look down the street and see that the “homes” are actually weathered frame stage homes with false fronts.

Reaction: No one else lives in El Mirage Heights. They are completely alone.

    Monster –

The nature of the beast. Most of the monster’s initial actions involve scary nature things, like wild winds and mirages.

Horror Situation: Going from bedroom to bedroom, Maria pounds nails into the wall and hangs crucifixes above the beds. The next time she returns to each room, the crucifixes are turned 90%

Reaction: Unnerved, she carefully straightens each crucifix.

    DEMAND: Disconcerting – Moving crucifixes.

MONSTER REVEAL – Poltergeist activity from the Monster.

Horror Situation: Maria takes Bonita out to pee in the backyard. The whipping wind startles the dog, who whimpers and runs back to the door. It also uncovers a stack of bones.

Reaction: Maria examines the bones, attempting to figure out if they are animal or human.

DEMAND: Creepy – Bones buried in the backyard.

MONSTER REVEAL – Something kills things at your new house. Probably the Monster. Or maybe the harsh climate. Or maybe a little of both.

Horror Situation: Maria is unpacking, and hears water from inside the bathroom. Calling for Jesus, she knocks on the closed door. Jesus looks into the hall from his room. When Maria opens the bathroom door, the water runs for a second, then stops.

Reaction: Maria is afraid, but doesn’t want to upset Jesus. She fiddles with the faucet handles, and tells Jesus to make sure the faucet is completely off.

DEMAND: Apprehension – Why and how is the water turning on and off?

MONSTER REVEAL – More unnerving poltergeist activity from the Monster.

Horror Situation: Jesus carefully places his toys on a shelf, stepping back to admit the display. One slowly moves to the edge of the shelf, teeters, and falls to the floor.

Reaction: Jesus removes his glasses, wipes the lenses, and puts them on. He picks up the toy and examines it. He places it back on the shelf.

DEMAND: Unnerving – Did Jesus place the toy too close to the edge of the shelf? Or did it just move and commit toy suicide?

MONSTER REVEAL – More unnerving poltergeist activity from the Monster.

Horror Situation: Maria fitfully dozes on the coach, where she has a nightmare about losing her baby. She wakes up with a start, clutching her stomach. She races to the bathroom and throws up.

Swaying a bit as the stands, she wipes a wet wash cloth on her face. She stares at her reflection in the mirror. And notices a man standing behind her.

Reaction: Maria turns around. No one is there.

DEMAND: Fright – Lots of pregnant women have strange dreams. And many pregnant women throw up. But was there a man in the mirror? Or was this a figment of Maria’s imagination?

MONSTER REVEAL – Maybe Maria just had a nightmare that caused her to vomit. But no, that was caused by the Monster, who has materialized for the first time.

Horror Situation: From her cage in the living room, Lolita Bird watches Bonita who is having a violent nightmare as she sleeps on the kitchen floor. Bonita yips, rolls, and kicks her legs.

A cabinet door slowly opens. Then another. And another. Until all are open. Then all but one shut with a bang. Lolita Bird jungle yells and Bonita wakes up and barks frantically.

Bonita slides across the kitchen floor into the living room. Lolita Bird’s cage shakes violently and the bird yells; “La Migra”!

Reaction: Jesus runs into the living room, and attempts to calm Bonita and Lolita Bird. A creak from the remaining open cabinet door gets Jesus’ attention. He watches as it slams shut.

DEMAND: Fear – WTF is going on? Not even the animals are safe in this place.

MONSTER REVEAL – The Monster’s poltergeist activity now has affected every living being in the house.

Maria hangs the house key ring on a hook in the kitchen.

Horror Situation: A short time later, she walks by the hook and the keys are gone.

Reaction: She frantically searches the room for the keys. No luck.

Maria and Jesus both go to bed in their respective rooms.

    Jesus sleeps in his bed.

Horror Situation: Tapping above his head wakes him. Motionless, he stares up at the wall.

Reaction: Curious, he taps back on the wall.

Horror Situation: Another tap from the wall. Then a battery toy car comes to life, and drives across the floor.

Reaction: Jesus watches the car, then burrows under the sheets.

DEMAND: Unnerving – Maybe Jesus’ response rapping wasn’t such a good idea.

    MONSTER REVEAL – I’m here. Let’s play.

Horror Situation: Maria dreams that a monster is chasing her. She flails about in the bed, only waking when she feels something hard and pointed in the bed sheets.

Reaction: Maria stares at her missing keys. Using a cord on the nightstand, she ties the key ring to her wrist.

DEMAND: Unnerving – Maybe Maria had them in her pocket the entire time.

MONSTER DEMAND – Or maybe the Monster just wants to drive her crazy.

ACT 2 – THE POINT OF NO RETURN

    Isolated/Trapped

Horror Situation: Maria awakens to the sound of a baby crying.

Reaction: She checks on Jesus, who is soundly sleeping. Then walks into the nursery and gazes into the crib. It is empty.

DEMAND: Tense – Is Maria imaging the crying baby? Is she dreaming?

MONSTER DEMAND – Or is the Monster continuing to torture Maria?

Horror Situation: A music box plays in the nursery.

Reaction: Jesus hears the music, and goes into the nursery. He picks up the music box and turns it off.

Horror Situation: A voice says: Jesus…

Reaction: A confused Jesus answers: Mama?

DEMAND: Curiosity – What is causing this? Clearly, it is not just Maria who is experiencing the phenomena.

MONSTER REVEAL – More poltergeist activity.

Horror Situation: Maria plugs in her cell phone and sets it on the bathroom vanity. When she returns, the charging cord is missing. After a brief search, she finds it in the toilet.

Reaction: Fishing out the cord, she yells for Jesus. When he doesn’t come, she goes to his room. The door is shut. Annoyed, she pauses briefly.

Horror Situation: Muffled voices from inside the room. One is Jesus. But the other?

Reaction: Maria freezes, then places her ear to the door. Brow furrowed, the lilt of the children’s voices confuse her. She knocks, then tries to open the door. It is locked.

Horror Situation: Yelling, Maria pounds on the door. She tries the knob again and walks in to see Jesus sitting on the floor, playing with his toys. Maria asks he who he was talking to. Jesus said “my friend”.

Reaction: Visibly mad, Maria tells Jesus not to lie to her about having a friend. And accuses him of dropping her charging cord in the toilet. Jesus denies knowing anything about the charging cord and says he does too have a friend.

Horror Situation: The crucifix above Jesus’ bed knocks against the wall, beginning a clockwise turn. The crucifix rotates 180 degrees as Jesus and Maria watch.

Reaction: Maria crosses herself, and runs to right the crucifix. It burns her hand and it falls to the floor. Maria clutches her hand and leaves.

Horror Situation: Jesus hears a low whistle. Then another. Jesus calls for his friend. He looks under the bed and sees the black eyed boy staring back at him.

Reaction: Jesus tells the boy he must leave. The boy tells him “you ask me in”.

Horror Situation: Maria’s in the bathroom, washing her reddened hand. The temperature of the water changes from cold to hot and she yanks her hand out of the flow.

Words slowly appear in the steamed mirror. P-E-E-K-A-B-O-O… A dark reflection in the mirror forms behind Maria

Reaction: Maria spins around to see…Nothing. She quickly wipes the mirror. As she leaves the bathroom, a man’s low chuckle…

DEMAND: Dread – Maria’s afraid, but now realizes that she will eventually have to confront whatever is in her house.

MONSTER REVEAL – The Monster wants them out and is willing to hurt people to make them GO.

The next day, Maria is in the garage, which is finished out with office space. She discovers El Mirage Heights brochures, with glossy pictures of her house and the partially built others on the cul-de-sac.

A large photo of a grinning man is prominent above the phase “Let Me Take You Home”.

Horror Situation: Maria hears a hiss behind her. A large snake is coiled in the corner of the garage.

Reaction: She grabs a broom and beats the snake. Then notices it is only a rope. Rubbing her eyes, she uses the broom to pull the rope out to see if the snake is under it. At the end of the rope is a hangman’s noose.

    Horror Situation: A man’s low chuckle…

Reaction: Maria yells: “This is MY HOUSE”. Stop It!”

DEMAND: Curiosity – So was Maria imagining the snake?

MONSTER REVEAL – The Monster is able to shape shift into dangerous things.

The next day, crucifix and Rosary in hand, Maria attempts to cleanse the house.

Horror Situation: Unseen by Maria, a ghostly hand reaches out and brushes Maria’s hair as she passes through the hall.

Reaction: Maria touches her hair, and turns to see no one.

Lolita Bird sleeps in her cage.

Horror Situation: An dark form approaches the cage, which shakes wildly.

Reaction: Lolita Bird jungle yells, attempts to bite the form. Then yells ‘La Migra! La Migra”

DEMAND: Fear – Why won’t these people take a hint and GO? There’s a truck outside, for heaven’s sake.

MONSTER REVEAL – The Monster is on the warpath. And is powerful enough to conjure mirages, touch people, torment the bird, and ignore cleansing efforts.

MIDPOINT: The Monster Is Worse Than We Thought!

Horror Situation: Maria is in the backyard, searching for Bonita. She follows footprints leading to a metal shed. It is locked. Trying the smallest key on the key ring secured to her wrist, Maria unlocks the door.

Horror Situation: She opens the door, and suspended cow skull swings past her head. On the concrete floor is a painted pentagram, spent candles, and bones. In the middle of the pentagram is a dead Bonita.

Reaction: Maria screams and runs back to the house.

DEMAND: Terror – Satanic activity in your backyard not a selling point. Who/what killed Bonita?

MONSTER REVEAL – The Monster is powerful enough to kill. And won’t stop at your dog.

Horror Situation: That afternoon, inside the house Maria tries to call Alberto. No signal. She wanders through the house, looking for a signal. She goes outside, and tries in various places in the yard.

Reaction: She finally finds two bars, and places the call. No answer but she leaves a frantic voice mail.

Horror Situation: Outside, the desert winds howl and rocks hit the house. And then it is quiet. Maria looks outside and sees her Doppelganger. Who is not pregnant.

Reaction: Maria subconsciously touches her stomach. She looks outside and nothing is there.

In an attempt to keep out the horror, Maria tapes old newspapers she’s found in the house over the windows.

In one newspaper, Maria reads about a developer who committed suicide in the model home of his failed subdivision El Mirage Heights.

Horror Situation: Maria recognizes the man as the one on the brochure and the apparition she’s seen.

DEMAND: Discovery – So the Monster is the developer who killed himself in the house. Which he still considers HIS HOUSE.

MONSTER REVEAL – And the Monster wants them out NOW.

    Terrorized –

Horror Situation: Carrying bags, Maria runs to the truck. Jesus follows with Lolita Bird’s cage. Maria fumbles but manages to shove the key in ignition. The truck’s engine catches and the radio blares. Then it sputters and stops.

Maria frantically tries again, starter motor whirs. And again. Then just click, click. Dead battery.

Reaction: Maria steels herself, and gathers up a few bags and Lolita-Bird in her cage. She and Jesus slowly leave the truck.

ACT 3 – FULL OUT HORROR

Horror Situation: A monstrous wind batters the pair as fight their way back to the home. Lighting stabs, and thunder shakes the earth. A pelting rain begins as they run back to the house. Lighting flashes, illuminating the hanged man in the house’s dormer window.

Reaction: Maria is terrified, and Jesus runs faster to the front door.

Full Pursuit By The Killer –

Once inside the house, Maria and Jesus barricade the doors.

    Hysteria –

Horror Situation: Outside, black birds pound the windows; several break their way inside and fly wildly around the room. They are joined by swarms of bats. The power goes out.

Reaction: Maria grabs a broom and swings wildly at the flying creatures. Jesus’ glasses are knocked off and he drops to the floor, reaching out to find them.

DEMAND: Terror – The black birds were bad enough. But BATS TOO?

MONSTER REVEAL – The Monster can conjure and/or control animals. And use them to drive all occupants from the house.

    Fight to the Death –

Horror Situation: Banging inside and outside the house. The Monster shows itself as the hanged man, who grabs Maria by the throat.

Reaction: Jesus tries to grabs the Monster, and is thrown against the wall. Maria wrenches free, and races to open the front door.

Horror Situation: Fierce winds suck Maria and Jesus out of the house, where the storm rages.

Reaction: Maria and Jesus run to the shelter of the frame stage home.

Horror Situation: Lighting strikes the structure, which flares up immediately.

Reaction: The two run to the next property, and the next, and the next.

Horror Situation: Each time, the structure is incinerated by a lighting strike. But the ferocity wanes with each strike.

Reaction: Maria and Jesus crouch behind some construction debris in the last remaining structure.

DEMAND: Conflict – Start fighting or everyone will die.

MONSTER REVEAL – The lighting is controlled by the Monster, but his strength is waning…

    Resolution –

Horror Situation: The Monster in the form of a huge apparition appears in the center of the street.

It enters the only remaining structure, and searches for Maria and Jesus.

Reaction: Maria and Jesus loudly scream the Prayer to St. Michael. They throw rocks and bricks at the apparition.

    DEMAND: Fight – Or die.

MONSTER REVEAL – The Monster is coming for them.

Horror Situation: The Monster grows to enormous proportions, and claws at Maria and Jesus.

Reaction: Maria throws the crucifix at the Monster, and grabs Jesus’ hand as they run from the structure.

Horror Situation: A massive blot of lighting hits the structure, and a huge fireball forms.

Reaction: Both Maria and Jesus are knocked off their feet.

Horror Situation: Unearthly screaming of a thousand demons. Then silence.

Reaction: Maria crawls to her feet. A short distance away is a motionless Jesus. She goes to him, imploring him to wake up. He opens his eyes, and smiles.

Maria helps him up, and they slowly walk away from the smoldering ruins. The rain stops as they walk to their home.

    Mike’s Monster Reveal Track

What I learned doing this assignment is…?

I learned to think about the monster reveals and the reasons for doing so. Since, for this story, I want the monsters to be more ambiguous, this assignment helped me add an extra Sasquatch and tighten the tense moments of fear. This could happen to anyone and in ways beyond their control. This also beats writing a script to only figure these details and weak points out after.

WHO OR WHAT IS THE MONSTER?

What are its powers? Familiarity with surroundings, has a ‘pet’ Sasquatch, highly educated and obsessively motivated, exploits environments and terrifies any potential threats in her territory. Also, the unexpected creature not bound to human laws.

What are its limitations? Human so only has wit, not magic or special power, to rely on in her quest to protect the Sasquatch; unexpected Sasquatch has ferocious strength.

What are its weaknesses? Same frailties that plague all humans, but her ultimate weakness is her passion to protect the Sasquatch; flesh and blood.

What is its Plan/Purpose/Appetite? Plan is to terrify people to avoid Sasquatch territory, to protect this last remaining Sasquatch after its family had been killed, and her questionable ways to protect the creature at any cost; territorial and defensive when threatened.

Who or what the monster is: A disavowed academic with a hatred for any real or perceived threat to Sasquatches? The hunter and scientist? The reaction of the teens? The unexpected Sasquatch?

    SEQUENCE AND DEMAND

I combined the two to basically show the confusion of events and that no one’s plan is working the way they intend. The real horror is ambiguous: the people or the creatures? Especially, the one no one expected?

Demand: Suspense. What are the sounds the teens are hearing in the forest?

Monster Reveal: There is something stalking them in the woods.

    2. Demand: Eerie. The teens flee the wrong way by going deeper into the ‘haunted area’ where they come across a run down stone cottage.

Monster Reveal: The teens catch a glimpse of what appears to be a Sasquatch.

    3. Demand: Inside the house holds it’s own terrors with evidence of occult rituals, playing into the growing hysteria of what is happening.

Monster Reveal: Confusion while something lurks outside the building.

    4. Demand: One teen determines to face the creature and scare it off but sees something else and dies trying to escape.

Monster Reveal: A figure with a Sasquatch mask chases the teen which causes the teen to slip and perish.

    5. Demand: After seeing this figure chase their friend, they argue and remain as night advances.

Monster reveal: Theres a person in a costume, a Sasquatch, and creepy ritual stuff.

    6. Demand: A professional team hunting for a Sasquatch see teen fumble and die.

Monster Reveal: The hunter sees something over the crest of the hill.

    7. Demand: Professional team sees abandoned cottage occupied and after brief fear meet the teens and tell them what happened.

Monster Reveal: Sasquatch attacks cottage; too quick for hunter; they flee into the woods and sunder into groups.

    8. Demand: Sasquatch researcher finds markings on a tree; Megan, Katie, and Maddy enter cave.

Monster Reveal: Sasquatch follows the girls into the cave and protects them from something else inside.

    9. Demand: Sam encounters the Feral Phantom but Flint shows up with Nate and Declan.

Monster Reveal: The Feral Phantom flies from flint showing it can be hurt.

    10. Demand: The girls meet up with Sam and Declan. Katie provides pertinent information about the markings and the anthropologist, Dr. Eleanor Sable. The Feral Phantom confronts Flint with a stone.

Monster Reveal: The Feral Phantom smashes Flint’s head in.

    11. Demand: Sasquatch carries Feral Phantom off, while a trembling Nate picks up Flint’s firearm and shoots at it. He misses and hits Katie, instead. The Sasquatch stops and roars, then flees. Filled with remorse he turns the gun on himself.

Monster Reveal: The monsters are not the killers they seem but a brief debate while building the trap continues.

    12. Demand: Chaos during Sasquatch trap attempt, Declan caught. Feral Phantom confronts him and reveals herself. Declan spared.

Monster Reveal: We see the Feral Phantom, Dr. Eleanor Sable, disgraced and chased out of academia for her research, learn her witness of Sasquatch slaughter, and the child Sasquatch she saved; (the reason for doing what she does). Complex, not totally unhinged.

    13. Demand: Dr. Julian values the science more, and tries killing Dr. Sable and capturing the Sasquatch.

Monster Reveal: The Sasquatch annihilates Dr. Julian to protect his surrogate family.

    14. Demand: Declan meets the Sasquatch. Dr. Sable and the Sasquatch flee to a new territory. The remaining three friends struggle to find solace while emergency crews arrive.

Monster Reveal: Who were the real monsters? And is it still out there?

Adding the ‘Monster Reveal’ to the Outline

    ACT 1

Atmosphere of Evil established: Eight year old child, Darian Brown, playing hide and seek. Here’s the ‘Ready or not, here I come’ in the distance and goes further into the woods. He sees a stone cottage to hide in.

    Horror Situation: Snapping twigs.

Reaction – stifled laughter: No way he’ll be found.

Horror Situation: Darian looks out and he sees something.

Reaction – terror: His face shows it.

Horror situation: Monster approaching and no escape.

Reactions – defeat: Screams as all goes dark.

Connect with the characters: 12 Years Later: Sam leads Megan, Nate, Maddy, Kate, and Danny along the trail, with Sam retelling the story of Darian Brown.

The characters are warned not to do it: Some strange sounds, eerie forebodings, and a solo female hiker warns them of some unusual activity from a strange part of the forest named, “The Whispering Thicket.” “They say there’s a phantom up there. The Feral Phantom. That is if you believe in that stuff,” she says before hiking off. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

Intro of Dr. Julian Grimm, Declan Caldwell, and Flint Maddox.

Denial of Horror: Sam assures his friends that this will be a fun time, a time to remember, and despite the stories, there’s no cause to fear.

Safety taken away: Sam and friends enter ‘The Whispering Thicket,’ where Darian saw the monster. They go to the abandoned stone cottage but refuse to enter.

Horror Situation: Spooky. They hear something behind them. Their exit is blocked by something but they can’t see what it is.

Reaction – Argue: They argue over what it could be.

    1. Demand: Suspense. What are the sounds the teens are hearing in the forest?

Monster Reveal: There is something stalking them in the woods.

Horror Situation: Two tree knocks, loud and close.

Reaction – Flee into shelter: They hide in the ruins of the abandoned stone cottage.

    2. Demand: Eerie. The teens flee the wrong way by going deeper into the ‘haunted area’ where they come across a run down stone cottage.

Monster Reveal: The teens catch a glimpse of what appears to be a Sasquatch.

Monster: The nature of the beast: The friends peek outs and get their first glimpse of the monster.

Horror Situation: A quick glimpse of a Sasquatch steps out from a tree.

Reaction – Panic and confusion: Terror-stricken, they attempt to make sense of what they think they see.

Horror Situation: More spook. Evidence of rituals.

Reaction – Fear and blame. They blame Sam for bringing them there but they just want to get out.

    3. Demand: Inside the house holds it’s own terrors with evidence of occult rituals, playing into the growing hysteria of what is happening.

Monster Reveal: Confusion while something lurks outside the building.

Horror Situation: Noises and sounds of the Sasquatch close, then silence.

Reaction – Helpless and afraid. Trapped. Evening approaching.

ACT 2 — THE POINT OF NO RETURN

Isolated / Trapped / Abducted: Friends trapped in abandoned cottage.

    Horror Situation: Menacing figure, whispers.

Reaction – Denial: Megan argues with Katie that the thicket, the whispers, the folklore of the ‘Feral Phantom’ is a story, which is never as magical as they seem. “This isn’t the movies.”

Horror Situation: Feral Phantom makes an appearance.

Reaction: Nate becomes hysterical. Danny becomes a liability.

Character Death: Danny faces the terror only to find he hasn’t the courage. Flint, the hunter, finds him. Danny tells his friends they’re being pranked and he’ll prove it. Despite protests, he strides out in full bravado.

Horror Situation: The friends see Danny fall backwards and scrambles up. Something has him spooked. They peek from the stone ruins to find the Feral Phantom chasing and shouting at Danny but they can’t hear what it’s saying.

Reaction – Megan barrels out and Sam follows but they don’t see anything. They hear Danny screaming. More sounds send them back inside where they fret about Danny.

    4. Demand: One teen determines to face the creature and scare it off but sees something else and dies trying to escape.

Monster Reveal: A figure with a Sasquatch mask chases the teen but stops at the sight of something else which causes the teen to slip and perish. More than one Sasquatch?

Character Death 1: Danny tumbles down a hill and ends up impaled on a spiked branch from a fallen tree.

Why?: He feigns courage but actually has none and seeks to escape.

How?: He charges carelessly into action and not prepared for what he sees. The Feral Phantom chases him.

Horror Situation: Danny falls to his death, impaled on broken branch of a fallen log.

Reaction: Lands in front of Flint Maddox, Declan Caldwell and Dr. Julian grim. Flint sees the Feral Phantom.

    5. Demand: A professional team hunting for a Sasquatch see teen fumble and die.

Monster Reveal: The hunter sees something over the crest of the hill.

Choices: Declan argues with Flint and Dr. Julian that they need to notify the police about the body. Flint convinces them not, too, but to satisfy Declan agrees to protect the body from wildlife and alert the authorities when finished. “This is a sign. This is what we came here to do. Call it in, might as well go home,” Flint tells them. Dr. Julian wants to keep going, and his excitement shows.

The friends argue about what to do and how they need to find Danny.

    6. Demand: After seeing this figure chase their friend, they argue and remain as night advances.

Monster reveal: Theres a person in a costume, a Sasquatch, and creepy ritual stuff.

Horror Situations Stones thrown at cottage. Gunshot.

Reaction: Sam confronts the danger but it’s only Dr. Julian and team.

Horror Situation: The group weeps at the news of Danny. Flint matter of fact, not so gentle. Told of a Sasquatch. Nighttime. Foggy. The door bangs.

Reaction: Flint grabs his gun and checks from the doorway. He fires a shot, just because.

    7. Demand: Professional team sees abandoned cottage occupied and after brief fear meet the teens and tell them what happened.

Monster Reveal: Sasquatch attacks cottage but which one? Too quick for hunter; the victims run into the woods and sunder into groups.

Horror Situation: A stone hits Flint. He sees the Feral Phantom but it vanishes.

Reaction: Mayhem. The friends make a run for it, despite protests from Declan. Nate remains behind.

MIDPOINT: The monster is worse than we thought! They think the Sasquatch is playing with them, like an orca with a seal.

Full pursuit by the killer: Declan tries helping teens escape but the teens see the Sasquatch again and separate, some into the cave, where the Sasquatch enters.

    Horror Situation: Monster approaches.

Reaction: Sam splits from Megan, Katie, and Maddy in the mayhem. Megan, Katie and Maddy enter a cave. “That could be that thing’s lair,” Maddy protests.

Terrorized: In the cave the noises and sounds of the approaching Sasquatch with no escape. But something else hunts them. Another Sasquatch? Something more terrifying. Actual villain revealed?

Horror Situation: The Sasquatch enters the cave.

Reaction: The friends retreat further in and try to hid in a dark recess. They hear it. “We’re dead. You don’t think that thing can’t smell us?” – Maddy; “Doesn’t have to smell us, just listen to you freak out.” – Megan.

Horror Situation: Megan feels something. Katie turns on flashlight. Bones!

Reaction: Maddy screams the flashlight catches eye shine and the light goes out.

Horror Situation: Feral Phantom makes strange incantation-like sounds in front of Sam.

Reaction: He freezes but Flint fires off his gun. Sam escapes while Flint confronts the Feral Phantom.

    8. Demand: Sasquatch researcher finds markings on a tree; Megan, Katie, and Maddy enter cave.

Monster Reveal: Sasquatch follows the girls into the cave and protects them from something else inside.

The girls intercept Sam who has a bit of a jump scare at their call. They tell him how the Sasquatch protected them.

Horror Situation: The Feral Phantom disappears behind a tree. Flint moves toward it. He shoots at it. Raises gun for another shot, when…SMASH. The Feral Phantom savagely beats him to death.

    9. Demand: Flint hunts but becomes the hunted.

Monster Reveal: The Feral Phantom flies from flint showing it can be hurt but that it can also hurt things.

Character Death 2: Flint is a threat a gets throttled by the Feral Phantom.

Why? Flint is out for the trophy. He wants the Sasquatch to be a thing on display. That goes against the Feral Phantom’s purpose.

How? Flint fires his gun at the Feral Phantom and the Sasquatch sneaks up and destroys him with physical strength. Maybe even rips an arm off.

Reaction: Nate takes gun for protection.

Sam and the girls run into Declan and he tells about the symbols he saw. He and Katie try to figure out the markings. Katie remembers them from a paper about the research of Dr. Eleanor Sable. “This is just a woman doing this?” – Dr. Julian takes a needle attached to vile of poison. Declan knows and tells Katie what happens as Dr. Julian hunts the Feral Phantom. “Where’s Nate?” The friends go out to find him.

Nate alone and paranoid. The Feral Phantom taunts him. He fires the gun, not well. Katie appears with Megan behind.

    11. Demand: Sasquatch carries Feral Phantom off, while a trembling Nate picks up Flint’s firearm and shoots at it. He misses and hits Katie, instead. The Sasquatch stops and roars, then flees. Filled with remorse he turns the gun on himself.

Monster Reveal: The monsters are not the killers they seem but a brief debate among the victims while building the trap. Also evidence by new wounds on Sasquatch, there’s another about.

Character Death 3: Katie accidentally shot by Nate.

Why?: Nate uses Flint’s rifle to try and kill the Sasquatch out of fear but misses and hits Katie.

How?: Attempts to shoot the Sasquatch but fails, Katie trying to stop him but he thinks she’s in danger.

Character Death 4: Nate shoots himself for killing Katie.

Why?: He can’t live with himself or face the consequences.

How?: He gives up and puts a bullet in his head.

ACT 3 — FULL OUT HORROR

    12. Demand: Chaos during Sasquatch trap attempt, Declan caught. Feral Phantom confronts him and reveals herself. Declan spared.

How?: The Feral Phantom will use his instruments against him but let him live at the last minute.

The Feral Phantom and the Sasquatch retreat into the cave.

The thrilling escape from death: False defeat of villain.

Horror Situation: Dr. Julian insane with rage grabs gun and fumbles bullets into it.

Reaction: Declan tries to stop him and gets shot but not fatally. Dr. Julian fires at the girls but misses. He’s not really thinking clear.

Death returns to take one or more: The villain overthrown, but at a heavy cost.

Sasquatch senses danger, stops Dr. Sable from leaving cave.

Horror Situation: Dr. Julian takes a hunting knife off Flint’s corpse.

Reaction: Sam knows what he must do, Dr. Julian pushes him away and swings the knife at him, nearly hitting him.

Reaction: Another Sasquatch kills Dr. Julian, protecting Sasquatch and Feral Phantom.

Character Death 5: Dr. Julian gets killed by another Sasquatch, one a bit more fierce.

Why?: Dr. Julian wants to experiment on the Sasquatch and confine it for his own interests. That doesn’t sit well with it’s protector, and Declan knows the greater enemy.

How?: Declan stabs him in the heart (“If only you knew how to use it better.),” and the Feral Phantom frees him of the knife.

Resolution: Sasquatch free, teens get free but some friends down, and disturbed by shaken reality. Declan has his evidence but chooses to keep it secret.

    14. Demand: Declan meets the Sasquatch. Dr. Sable and the Sasquatch flee to a new territory. The remaining three friends struggle to find solace while emergency crews arrive.

Monster Reveal: Who were the real monsters? And is it still out there?

    Declan meets the Sasquatch.

    Dr. Sable and Sasquatch leave.

Sam joins his friends only to find out that after all he did to try to give them one last hurrah, he broke their friendship—he did. What he tries to save, he loses. Megan knows what happened was unforeseeable but Maddy wants nothing to do with him and blames him for the nightmares she’ll never forget.

Horror Situation: Sam stares off a ledge, overcome and ready to fall.

Reaction: Declan pulls him back. One last line of sagely advice.

Morning comes on, foggy. The authorities arriving, the military.

Final Monster Reveal: Another Sasquatch stands up, bears it’s teeth and retreats into the woods.

    Karen Crider’s Monster Reveal Track/ 7

What I learned: That detail lends credibility that anchors a world not only in imagination, but possibility.

Hawk is my monster. He is a vampire. He returns to life after Benny and Alan go treasure hunting and Benny’s shovel disturbs the wooden stake dismantling his skeletal chest, animating Hawk.

A sub monster, (Barnaby) originally possessed the clock. Whether I utilize him or not remains to be seen. I have left him open in case I need a vitamin to strengthen my script.

    Powers:

#1. Hawk can shift shape at the speed of light.

#2. He’s powerful and kills without remorse.

    #3. Hawk can turn invisible.

#4. He’s a leader working for his goal of unifying vampires into a global entity.

#5. He harasses humans who upset him. He may not kill right away, but mess up, and eventually, he will take you out. He has the ability to drown you, or cause other means for a human to die.

    6. With rats and mice denigrating into vampires from vampire use, rodents multiply along with the vampire element. A rodent’s bite contaminates the human species into vampire-hood. The bites speeds up the need for wooden stakes to keep the world from denigrating into a vampire morass. As a novelty, rich people can buy the most elaborate vampire stakes for several thousand–some even higher. And they laugh, not taking vampires seriously. The chances of people to continue disappear are high. Less humans/ less production/ less chance to maintain the world of vampires. Hawk wants vampires to control the planet.

    Limitations:

#1. Hawk is limited by the night. His pseudo-viable life is obtainable only by day. That’s why the clock is so important to him. It guides him and keeps him alive.

#2. Hawk has a broken fang. Something that happened in a past life. So, his puncture wounds are not as clean as other vampires. This is how his victims are identified. To drain a human of blood, he needs strong fangs.

#3 Hawk has a harder time converting humans to vampires. It’s easier to employ rats, mice, etc. for his diet. Thus, there are more vampire rat and mice populations as a result. Hawk would like a false fang, but doesn’t know any vampire dentists.

There are professional limitations on Hawk that do not hinder other vampires. A vampire’s life span is null and void if found guilty of murdering another other vampire. To some degree, vampires have a higher code of honor than humans, but with the penalty being so high, crimes like these rarely happen.

Hawk is vampire royalty. He has served as a lecturer in vampire universities. One must endure for centuries to obtain such status.

    Weaknesses:

#1. The clock is his Achille’s heel. It helps him stay alive, but It’s original owner is willing to kills cause he wants it back.

With rats and mice turning into vampires, their kind is going to multiply along with the human element to cause havoc. A rodent’s bite can create vampires of their own species speeding the world into a vampire morass.

Plan/ Purpose/Appetite: Hawk will live indefinitely unless his life is cut short by outside forces. Fire, a wooden stake, bad luck, or an enemy of his own kind or that of a human.

His end goal is for a world-wide vampire population, led by vampires is to utilize humans as food, similar to humans using cows, sheep and other domestic animals for food.

He suspects Barnaby, the original owner of the clock is back, and maybe a problem.

    Brett Born’s Monster Reveal Track

What I learned doing this assignment is how to focus on my villains and work on the why they do the things they do.

Buck Kilgore is a psychopath who practices a twisted form of mysticism that he uses to trap the souls of his victims.

Powers: Uses smoke in ceremonial acts to control sprits.

Limitations: He’s human… he bleeds, and he can die.

Weaknesses: Insecure loner who wants people to feel sorry for him.

Plan/Purpose/Appetite: He wants to perform a very special death ritual for his father.

Muse is a psychopath driven mad by the ghost of Buck’s first drive-in victim and seeks revenge for his death.

Powers: Cunning / Stealth / Tech Genius

Limitations: Their revenge plot must unfold at the drive-in

Weaknesses: Arrogance / Blinded by their desire for revenge

Plan/Purpose/Appetite: To avenge the death of Jim

ACT 1 – SET UP FOR HORROR

-Atmosphere of Evil established: Flashback thirty years to the night of the first murder at the drive-in.

Demand: Erik sits alone in the ticket booth. Car approaches with no headlights. Why is this person approaching in this manner? There is no one else around… why are they arriving at such an odd time?

    Tasha’s Monster Reveal Track

What I learned doing this assignment is it’s crucial to understand how your monster operates in order to put together the story logic and the main horror element of the story.

    1. Create each part of this model:

    A. Who is your monster and what is their terror?

My monster is the recently departed Sheena and her terror is that her wrath will not cease and she knows the identity of the Mirror Mirror serial killer.

    • Powers?

    She can:

    influence thoughts and dreams

manifest gory images especially of herself

    create minimal poltergeist activity

    Manifest cold spots

    • Limitations:

She can’t use her poltergeist activity to really cause any harm because she’s a spirit

Her power to influence isn’t very strong and can be ignored

    • Weaknesses?

She’s a spirit so she can only use scares to exact her revenge

    • Plan/Purpose/Appetite?

She wants to kill the members of the group that left her to die at the hands of Mirror Mirror. Once she realizes she won’t be able to scare anyone to death after she successfully offs Targ, she finds Mirror Mirror and uses her influence to get him to kill the group (and the loved ones that unfortunately become collateral damage).

    B. Sequence the reveals.

    She can manifest cold spots

The homes of Targ and Ike are cold.

Qade has to put on a jacket in his home.

She can create minimal poltergeist activity

She knocks things off of shelves and knocks doors open and closed at Ike and Targs homes.

She can manifest gory images especially of herself

Targ, Ike and Qade see her in various forms of dismemberment and decay or she shows up in the style of apparition Targ is most afraid of – J-horror (she could be a creepy Ring girl)

    Sheena’s wrath will not cease

Ike learns that Sheena was relentless in her life.

<b style=”background-color: var(–bb-content-background-color); font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>She’s a spirit so she can only use scares to exact her revenge

She appears to Targ as a terrifying dead girl and flies at his, chasing his throughout his house.

She can influence thoughts and dreams.

-She lands on Targ after chasing him through the house and tells him to kill himself or to leave the house or she’ll kill him.

She can’t use her poltergeist activity to really cause any harm because she’s a spirit

Qade opens his switchblade and lays in on the table. He dares her to use it on him and it just falls to the floor as if a kitten whacked it with its paw.

Her power to influence isn’t very strong and can be ignored

Qade calls her out on her lack of ability to really do anything other than make them see stuff, think stuff and see objects get knocked to the ground. He tells the group to get over it and ignore her.

She knows the identity of the Mirror Mirror serial killer.

Stan Whitman (aka the Mirror Mirror serial killer) goes throughout his day, eating his breakfast, looking at his mail, microwaving his dinner, watching tv while he eats while Sheena watches.

<b style=”background-color: var(–bb-content-background-color); font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>She can influence thoughts and dreams and she <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”> wants Mirror Mirror to kill the members of the group that left her to die.

-Stan Whitman begins having dreams of his recent kill morphing into various people. She morphs into Vivi and shows him killing Vivi. He’s sold on the idea and shows him where he can find her in the dream.

    <b style=”background-color: var(–bb-content-background-color); font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>She can influence thoughts and dreams.

-Sheena gets Vivi to grow her hair out and groom herself for Mirror Mirror.

Mirror Mirror is a sadistic and effective serial killer.

How he toys with and kills Liv.

Mirror Mirror uses female disguises to disarm his victims.

Gets Faye by dressing up as little old lady.

Gets Jean Tyrone by dressing up as his sister, Faye.

Monster Reveal: One monster is using another monster to kill off the group.

Ike and Qade realize they not only have to kill Mirror Mirror, but they have to banish Sheena.

Monster Reveal: Mirror Mirror is strong enough to take Vivi from Qade.

Mirror Mirror fights Qade and kidnaps Vivi.

Monster Reveal: They discover Mirror Mirror’s lair.

They can burn it down after they rescue Vivi, killing Mirror Mirror.

Monster Reveal: Mirror Mirror will sacrifice himself if it means he can complete a kill.

Mirror Mirror captures Vivi and drags her into the burning building.

Monster Reveal: Sheena is so determined to kill the last remaining member of the group that banishment doesn’t work on her.

She teams up with Vivi’s dead spirit to drive Ike to his death.

    2. Lay that over your current outline and fill in each clue/reveal using the tag “Monster Reveal:.

Horror Situation: Trap door in the floor – Ike steps onto the trap and he falls through the floor with Faye on him.

Horror Situation: Injured – Ike falls onto the surgical table with Faye on top of him and breaks his leg.

Reaction: Escape – Ike tries to get out from under Faye

Reaction: Hide – Ike gets dragged into the other room by Qade. Qade is badly burned with bleach and blind in one eye.

Horror Situation: Face to Face with the monster – Mirror Mirror enters the room.

Horror Situation: Seeing other dead body – Mirror Mirror shove’s Faye’s into the other room with Qade and Ike. Qade reacts violently to seeing the dead body of his girlfriend but tries to keep quiet.

Horror Situation: Friends in Danger – Mirror Mirror roles Vivi into his “surgical room”.

Horror Situation: Cannot see – Qade and Ike strain to see through the hole in the wall if Vivi is still alive. It looks like Mirror Mirror has already begun making modifications to her.

Horror Situation: Face to face with the monster – Distracted, Qade and Ike don’t see that Mirror Mirror has entered their room. Mirror strikes down Qade with several fatal knife stabs (or something else that fits his MO – maybe Mirror Mirror injects him with the sedative, drags him into the “surgery” room and starts taking vital things off of him to put on Vivi – maybe if he catches Ike).

    • Character Death 6: Qade

    • Why: Mirror Mirror pursues Qade through his house of horrors and kills him to survive, protect his secret surgery house and prevent Qade from preventing Mirror Mirror from performing his special surgeries on Vivi.

    • How: Surprise attack and a lot of stabbing. He’s also burned him with bleach and maimed him in one eye earlier in the climax. (Still unsure if Ike should die and Qade should live?)

Reaction: Escape – Ike runs into the surgery room to find Vivi still alive. He frees her from the surgical table/gurney on wheels and they run back through the house of horrors and make it outside.

The thrilling escape from death: Ike douses the shack in gasoline from his car and lights it on fire. The shack is dry and made of flammable materials and it quickly turns into an inferno. Ike calls the cops. He didn’t call them earlier because he was going to commit arson??

    • Character Death 7: Mirror Mirror

    • Why: Mirror Mirror dies because he’s a serial killer and must be stopped.

    • How: Ike burns down Mirror Mirror’s “surgery” shack with Mirror Mirror inside.

Death returns to take one or more: – Ike sees Sheena in the flames. Distracted, he doesn’t see Mirror Mirror emerge to grab Vivi and pull her back into the inferno of the house.

Reaction: Fight – Ike heads into the burning building to get Vivi but Mirror Mirror had dragged her deep into the flames.

Horror Situation: Dilemma – Vivi screams in pain and horror. Ike tries to go in further, but Sheena crashes into the burning structures of the house so they start to fall around him. Vivi can still be saved, but when Ike sees Sheena at the doorway, he knows he has only one chance to jump through it before she rams it and the whole place collapses on him. He saves himself.

    • Character Death 8: Vivi

    • Why: She dies because Mirror Mirror pulls her into the burning house and Ike chooses to save himself.

    • How: Burning house collapses on her.

Monster Reveal: Sheena is so determined to kill the last remaining member of the group that banishment doesn’t work on her.

Resolution: Ike lives. He gives his statement to the local police exposing Mirror Mirror. He’s a local hero. But at night when he sleeps, he dreams of killing himself over the guilt of leaving Vivi behind. When he’s able to calm himself and return to sleep, Vivi whispers into his ear and Sheena joins her to increase Vivi’s power of influence.
