Ken Wood’s Character Journey Track
This assignment helped me assess the depth and arcs of each of my lead characters. I did find room for improvement.
Dr. Rexy Lambert,
A. Role
1 Role: Arachnologist tasked with
Capturing and studying the new species of spider.
Creating an anti-venom.2 Traits: High school socialite turned into geeky entomologist.
3 Fears: Being found out for neglecting to get help for her sister when she was attacked and killed by a spider when they were children.
Afraid if anyone, especially Keaton found out, he would hate her. So, she chose to go to a different college.
4 Wants/Needs :
Has dedicated her life to creating anti-venoms as a kind of penance.
Actually has a deep-seated fear of spiders when she can’t control the environment.5 Likability / Rooting factors:
She is personable. Likes lite banter. Works well with college students. Her daughter loves her. She is gentle to the horse which has to take on dilutions of the venom in order for him to create anti-bodies. She lovers her dog and saves his life.
When we learn that she feels responsible for her sisters death from a spider attack she caused, and that she has tried to make up for it as an anti-venom scientist, we feel deeply for her.
6 How they react under stress: Rexy freezes when the Spider wakes up during a venom-extraction procedure. It’s just like the time the spider attacked her sister.
7 Relationship with other characters: She broke up with Keaton during college, and hadn’t kept contact until Keaton needed her on this case. Now, she realizes how much she really likes Keaton again.
She did marry someone else after college and had a child, but got divorced. She has been reticent to get involved since.
Rexy senses something is off with Atticus right away and disdains his crudeness. She is liked and respected by her classmates and Keaton.
B. What is their Character Journey for this story?
1 Character Intro: Rexy and two lab students are performing a venom extraction when Keaton calls. She gets curt with whoever it is until she hears Keaton say her name.
2 Denial: Makes lite of Keaton for making the spider sound like an apocalyptic alien invader.
3 Their reaction at first horror: Shocked at the rapid decomposition.
4 Relation to group after first horror: Still committed, but lets Keaton go down in the engine room to catch the spider.
5 How they fight back: Angry at herself for freezing during the spider’s wake up during the venom extraction.
6 End Point: When the spider hitchhikes a ride to her home and climbs up on her daughter, she really gets angry. When it bites her dog, she wants to hunt it down and kill it, listing six different ways.
7 What insight do their death or survival bring to the others/audience? When people she cares for start getting attacked by the spider, that’s when her courage overcomes her fear and she persists in stopping the spider.
Keaton Mercer
A. What is their Character Profile?
1 Role: State Medical Examiner tasked with investigating the string of deaths caused by the spider. He is the love interest of Rexy, and goes out of his way to help her and the sheriff capture the spider and solve the mystery of the spider’s sudden appearance on the planet.
2 Traits: Level-headed, problem-solver, bravest one on the team.
3 Fears: Losing Rexy again.
4 Wants/Needs: Wants Rexy for life.
5 Likability / Rooting factors: Brave, smart, good guy, helpful to Rexy, will banter with her, helps Rexy get over her guilt. Sacrifices a digit to live and be with Rexy.
6 How they react under stress: Level-headed, resourceful.
7 Relationship with other characters:
Still pines for Rexy and has remained unmarried all this time. Works well with the Sheriff.
B. What is their Character Journey for this story?
1 Character Intro: Asks Rexy to join the case and wants to keep the relationship purely professional at first.
2 Denial: Doesn’t think the spider is as resourceful and ferocious as it really is, therefore, he puts himself in a dangerous position down in the engine room.
3 Their reaction at first horror: Sickened and extremely cautious about going after the spider until he knows more about it. He is able to bravely carry out his duties.
4 Relation to group after first horror: Is the coordinator who gets the team assembled with arachnologists.
5 How they fight back: Keaton makes the plan to capture the spider and though things go wrong, nearly getting himself killed, the plan succeeds.
6 End Point: Keaton goes above and beyond, never leaving Rexy to deal with the spider alone. He is there for her when things go wrong and aids the sheriff in uncovering Atticus’s hidden part in the creation of the new species. He also tries to save Atticus by knocking the spider off of him, and gets bit in the process.
7 What insight do their deaths or survival bring to the others/audience? Provides an excellent role model as a public servant, and as a man looking out for his friends, and the woman he loves.
He survives even though bit by asking the sheriff to shoot off his finger, showing he’s willing to make the toughest of calls.
We also learn that his ambitiousness during college years, caused Rexy to feel like he wasn’t sensitive enough as a partner, so she broke it off. But, now, he was able to demonstrate that he is a better listener and values her more deeply now than ever before.
Atticus Xanderman
A. What is their Character Profile?
1 Role: Arachnologist who secretly crossbred the most venomous spider with the largest spider to create a venomous spider ten-times more dangerous than any other.
2 Traits: Intelligent. Tells off-color jokes. Motivated to create the spider for money.
3 Fears: Being exposed. Getting bit. Afraid of what his dangerous employers will do to him if he doesn’t get the spider back.
4 Wants/Needs : Wants to get the spider back in Brazil, under control, making venom for his employers. Thus, getting back to normal.
5 Likability / Rooting factors: Irreverently funny. He has a sadistic/obsessive relationship with spiders.
6 How they react under stress: Responds to stress in quirky, humorous ways.
7 Relationship with other characters: Feigns being helpful when all he really wants is to get the spider back. Feels he’s always saying or doing something that Rexy does not like, but makes a joke about “being in trouble” with her anyway. This only makes it worse.
B. What is their Character Journey for this story?
1 Character Intro: Shows up unannounced to help catch the spider. Immediately his irreverent humor spills out.
2 Denial: Denies having anything to do with creating the spider. Yet, tries to make Rexy and Keaton believe that he must take the spider back to Brazil, soles because it is “protected under the Endangered Species program”.
3 Their reaction at first horror: Shocked at what his creation’s venom can do.
4 Relation to group after first horror: Feigns being helpful in creating an anti-venom, but tries to stop the process by poisoning the horse.
5 How they fight back: Atticus actually keeps them from killing the spider and tries to do the same for its offspring. When Rexy tries to give a dose of anti-venom to Keaton, he redirects the syringe meant for Keaton into his arm, leaving Keaton to possible die.
6 End Point: After Atticus takes the anti-venom, he flees the scene and separates completely from the group.
7 What insight do their deaths or survival bring to the others/audience? His character is so quirky and intriguing that his survival gives the audience hope that there will be a sequel and that he will be in it.

How they fight back: He has all these trinkets he found online from some witchcraft site. He thinks they will work against the Priestess
End Point: He lives because he is the least influenced by the witchcraft.
What insight do their deaths or survival bring to the others/audience? It’s good to have a friend who has an aunt who is a witch.
DESHON
Character Intro: Football player for the school. Popular but does hang with this ragtag group of nerds only because his friend Kamal does. Can’t stand Chad.
Denial: He kind of knows of these things so he take it in as it happens.
Their reaction at first horror: He doesn’t really have anything happen as of now.
Relation to group after first horror: He warns them they are messing with things they should leave alone.
How they fight back: He goes to see his aunt who knows about this stuff.
End Point: He is the one with the real power to help reject the spells and witchcraft aimed at them.
What insight do their deaths or survival bring to the others/audience? His recovery leaves it open to part 2.

Rachelle’s Character Journey Track
What I learned: The characters show themselves, even seem to name themselves, the more you think about/interact with them. Adding these parts to my outline is taking quite some time, but it is helping to flesh out the storyline more.
The Rebel/Rule breaker (Ryan)
PROFILE
Traits: Sarcastic, joker, sexually motivated, plays by his own rules, extroverted, disrespectful.
Fears: Being alone, being a social pariah
Wants/Needs: Sex. Control. Status.
Likability/Rooting Factors: Funny and charming, but overall not a very good person. Medium likability.
Reaction under stress: deflect.
Relationship with other characters: Friendly, but trying to have sex with one of the lovers. Gets a lot of eye rolls for his behavior.
JOURNEY
Character intro: Traipsing through the woods with his band of misfits, Ryan spots a chain link fence. He approaches it and hops over. He invites his friends to do the same.
Denial: Despite having helped Estrella (Innocent) out of a man-made pit, Ryan is ok with entering the compound to escape the storm. He’s not afraid of anything.
Reaction to first horror: When the floor descends and the group finds themselves in a basement of tunnels, he pretends it is a game.
Relation to group after first horror: Ryan uses humor to lighten the mood; jokes with Estrella to come with him into the darkened tunnel for some “privacy.”
How Ryan fights back: He doesn’t realize what a dangerous situation he is in until it is too late. He will be restrained, sedated, and unable to fight back.
End point: Embracing the monster he has been turned into.
Insights: Go with the flow, give up control, accept your fate, embrace your new family.
The Innocent (Estrella)

Denial: She is non-responsive, doesn’t resist the group’s urge to enter the foreboding building.
Reaction to first horror: She lets Ryan lead her to one of the tunnels.
Relation to group after first horror: She cries and needs to be comforted.
How Estrella fights back: She screams during Ryan’s surgery. She tries to fight Cerberus with the others.
End point: She is the only one to exit the compound. She is dazed.

JOURNEY
Character intro: Oliver (Olly) is the last one over the fence. He looks back, indicating his reluctance to participate.
Denial: The situation is unbelievable.
Reaction to first horror: Of course this happened, now how do I get out of it.
Relation to group after first horror: Olly is nonplussed at being trapped with Will. Ultimately he has to make a plan, because Will is incapable.
How Olly fights back: He hides and sacrifices others to save himself.
End point: Olly jumps from the roof to escape the Doctor, but ends up picked apart by harpies.

Relation to group after first horror: She waits for Pip’s instructions and encourages everyone else to listen.
How Shayne fights back: Like a lion protectress, it is where she shines.
End point: Zinnia’s throat is slashed by the Doctor’s flyby, and she dies.
Insights: You can’t save everybody. Is self-sacrifice worth your life?

Bill Anderson’s Character Journey Track for MOTHERLAND
What I learned doing this assignment is the importance of giving every character their own valid journey according to common criteria – minor characters get more interesting.
Character profiles:
LEAH
1. Moral One: Leah was born deaf but at least she survived – her Mother died giving birth to her, and Leah has always been a healer – becoming a veterinarian was a way of making that useful with the animals on the farm and beyond. In addition she has always seen the hurt in Jeb for the loss of her mother and felt a responsibility to look after him in her mother’s absence. Jeb’s favourite, she has always lived on the farm.
2. Kind, curious, quietly brave.
3. Violence.
4. Harmony with all living things
5. Empathy
6. Focuses, acts rationally
7. Leah tries to compensate with her sisters for being Jeb’s favourite daughter. Pregnant Beth appreciates her expert kindness, Jan is more jealous of her apparently more intimate relationship with their parent(s). Jack and Michael just see her as the little sister.
JAN
1. Complainer: Jan (eldest daughter) can’t understand why Jeb persists in not letting her take over running the farm – she graduated from agricultural college with honours, she’s been working in sales for a fertilizer company and she knows exactly how she’d turn the farm around using the latest cutting edge technology – if she was Jeb’s son it would all be so different. She blames Michael for their not having conceived a child yet.
2. Conventional. Ambitious. Wants to be in charge. Likes to boss Michael, but is quietly dependent upon him.
3. Not being able to have children.
4. To run the farm the way she knows best and increase its productivity. Babies.
5. She’s decisive and persuasive.
6. Angry, blames others.
7. Jealous of Beth’s pregnancy; admires Michael’s superior intellect, but hates his poor fertility – treats him like the younger brother she never had; disguises her fear of her father with academic/theoretical agricultural discourse; resents Jeb’s favourite daughter Leah, resents Leah’s practical healing, but is proud of her becoming a vet; indulges her middle sister Beth who has always been “stupid” but fun. Wouldn’t be so sexually attracted to Jack if she had conceived a child and he hadn’t .
MICHAEL
1. Introvert: Michael (Jan’s husband) is a scientist specialising in genetically modified coatings to make crop seeds resistant to attack – from pests, fungi, bacteria etc. Happy in the sterile environment of the lab, he is quietly furious that the fecundity of his own seed is in question.
2. Curious. Detached. Loves neat abstract, hates mess: emotional and physical. Asthmatic – inhaler – autoimmune aggravated by stress.
3. Wild animals. Being out of control.
4. A partner to value and protect him. Quiet space.
5. A dry sense of humour.
6. Avoid, deflect
7. Thinks the world of Jan – but her whole family is chaos on legs – dreads visiting, but the farm is an interesting, challenging project.
BETH
1. Rebel: Before she even knew what they were, Beth embraced the principles of permaculture and rewilding to define herself as an individual against her domineering father and high-achieving, conforming sister Jan. Beth’s semi-itinerant hippy lifestyle brought her into contact with Jack and for the latter months of the pregnancy they have been living on the farm.
2. Naughty, funny, wayward.
3. Her baby dies, or born deformed.
4. Wants to turn the farm back into the Garden of Eden. Needs somewhere safe.
5. Fun. A good cook/nourisher.
6. Dramatize – Looks to others for help and guidance.
7. Expects to have to negotiate everything with everyone, but is always swayed by her big sister Jan.
JACK
1. Out of Control: Jack is a talented musician who fancies himself as a shaman. He also has an eye on Beth’s share of the farm. And sees that Jan has an eye on his proven fertility.
2. Dynamic connector; sexy seducer
3. Disease, hospitals, surgery, technology
4. Wants sensory pleasure/Needs it now
5. Good-looking, knows how to charm
6. Angry, calculating.
7. Easy relationship with Beth getting more complicated with the approach of the birth. Dislikes Michael, but happy to charm the rest of Beth’s family for what it might bring.
JEB
1. Leader: without consultation, patriarch Jeb (70, Father) announces at the family gathering for his birthday that he’s going to sell the failing family farm. None of his daughters want this, they want to keep the farm where they were raised in the family, but how could they make the farm work?
2. Tough, blinkered, proud, denying becoming physically weaker with age.
3. Being hated by his children.
4. To provide for his family
5. Provides for his family
6. Angry denial
7. Patriarch
Character Journeys:
MICHAEL
1. Genetic seed biologist struggling to conceive a child with wife Beth. Supporting her plans to update and upgrade the family farm that’s been in decline too long.
2. Reaction to (crazy storm/landslide/Jeb asphyxiation) fungus growing beside Jeb is to deny it’s monster – it’s a perfectly plausible flowering fungus given the sudden, extreme wet conditions – and…
3. …just apply huge dose of chemically-proven fungicide.
4. Dead.
5. Can’t fight back
6. Running from Jack after attacking him for having sex with Beth – grabbed by monster.
7. Fungicide isn’t going to stop the monster.
JAN
1. Eldest daughter, highly qualified to farm, but frustrated – denied the chance on the family farm by her patrician father Jeb, because she’s a girl. Jealous of wayward younger sister Beth’s pregnancy and doing everything she can, but failing to conceive a child with husband Michael. Coming to Jeb’s 70th birthday family reunion with the agenda of announcing taking over and running the farm “properly”.
2. Denial
3. Sacrifice her sister Leah when she discovers mother’s skeleton and ring
4. Recruits Beth to turn on Leah.
5. Fights with Beth to let monster take their father instead of them
6. Smashed against the wall by roots dragging her through a window
7. This monster is protecting Beth.
JACK
1. Musician, wannabe shaman and wheeler-dealer opportunist, has hooked up with Beth, got her pregnant and is staying with her on the farm – rent-free and the prospect of a share.
2. Jack rolls with the storm/landslide/Jeb asphyxiation as just “weather” – he figures Jeb’s a goner from the crevasse/root but eager to help to earn kudos and a better share of the farm when Jeb dies.
3. Jack runs in terror from the monster roots that killed Michael.
4. Jack is believed by Beth, but Jan is suspicious of his account of Michael’s death (She’s concerned Jack wants him dead). Leah thinks Jack may have hallucinated the whole thing after accidentally (or deliberately) ingesting some of Jeb fungus.
5. Jack pours a ring of toxic herbicide around the farmhouse to protect them. He axes creeper branches trying to get into the house. He carries Jeb out of the house in the belief that Jeb is the intended the branches and roots.
6. Snapped in two by roots/branches – to make Jack drop Jeb
7. Jeb is indeed the primary target of the monster.
BETH
1. Middle, wayward daughter returned to family farm pregnant with her boyfriend Jack to have her baby in safety.
2. Denial until Jack tells what happened to Michael.
3. Waters break.
4. Persuaded by Jan to potentially let the monster take Leah instead of them
5. Redoubles here efforts to protect her family right or wrong – very much including Jeb – fights Jan to stop her giving Jeb to the monsyter
6. Trapped by fire she lives long enough for Leah to c-section her baby before she’s asphyxiated.
7. The monster was trying to protect trapped Beth and her baby from the fire.
JEB
1. Struggling to keep the farm he’s worked all his life financially viable – can’t afford the interest on the debt accumulated to keep farming increasingly intensively – decides to sell up to give something to his three daughters.
2. Runs away in a panic from his wife coming back from the grave with the nest egg letter.
3. Screams and flails as the landslide opens up and the root asphyxiates
4. Unconcious.
5. Confesses his guilt in mother’s suicide.
6. Decapitated by root as Leah forgives him.
7. Don’t farm intensively/over reach/disrespect Mother Earth
LEAH
1. Working as a vet and looking after ageing Jeb, living with him on the farm.
2. (Hides her reaction to the mother cow dying giving birth to the deformed calf – the horror story of her own birth) Denies Jack’s story of Michael’s death – suspects he’s hallucinating from fungus.
3. Hides her fear and stays calm.
4. Hides her suspicions about mother’s skeleton for as long as possible to try to understand them, and protect herself and others. Sacrificed by Jan and Beth.
5. Goes where everyone else fears – the scene of Michael’s death: to prove to the others that there is no monster. C-sections Beth’s baby (protected by the monster)
6. Leah directly challenges the monster
7. Leah’s defence of Beth’s baby and respect for the land may placate the monster?

Character Journey for this story?tba
Indigo Character Intro:
We meet Indigo as he is in a therapy session, depth psychology, speaking about/dealing with his near-death experience.
Denial:
Indigo is in denial of the depth of his NDE, his father abandonment.
Their reaction at first horror:
Indigo is introduced to the “monster” as a voice during his NDE, that monster turns out to be Lucifer, less of a monster than humanity.
How they fight back:
Indigo faces his challenges head on, and by doing so, his fears are fearful, not necessarily less dangerous. His NDE removed the illusion of the veil, and his fears about life. But he is not a dare-devil, just someone whom is considered fearless.
End Point:
During the trial of Gabriel vs Lucifer, Indigo is sitting juror and scribe, he remembers the voice from the night of the accident as that of Lucifer. He learns that he was saved that night, for this particular moment, Lucifers ace in the hole, both being abandoned by the father and Lucifer being there for him during his accident, when his father was not.
What insight do their
deaths or survival bring to the others/audience?His NDE, the protagonist, early in the movie, allows all hell to break free onscreen because our protagonist does not need to be saved, he already died, but came back, thus his experience in near death. Everyone else is not so lucky.

Personality Pride, Planetary Prince. 666. Fatherhood abandonment.
He is willing to acknowledge Michael of Salvington as his Creator father but not as his God and rightful ruler.

Abortion Doctor and political lobbyist. Was on the medical board that ends the career of our protagonist, and also aborts Indigo’s unborn child. Keeps the aborted fetus of Indigo, because he knows the power of this man’s seed, thus the reason for the medical separation.
Asclepius was a demigod born to Apollo and Princess Coronis, a mortal woman from Thessaly, Greece. During her pregnancy, Coronis fell in love with another human named Ischy’s. Upon learning about their affair, Apollo sent his twin sister Artemis to burn Coronis at the stake.
However, Apollo decided to save his unborn child from his mother’s burning womb. This event was said to have been the Caesarion sections in human history, earning Asclepius his name, which translates into ‘to cut open.’
He then gave the infant Asclepius to Chiron, a centaur known for his medicinal skills. Chiron raised Asclepius and taught him how to be a healer.
Threatened with death by bolt of lightning, Asclepius performs abortions to fulfill his obligation of sending over fresh souls to save his own. Thus the importance of the electrical storm timed with the Particle Accelerator.
Killed by Zeus in previous life for not bringing souls over. Ironically, he was killed with bolt of lightning, which is in alignment with the particle accelerator creating anti-matter to merge with aborted fetuses to create Anti-Christ.
Member of medical board that destroys Indigos life with false diagnosis AND is the abortionist that performs the abortion of his unborn child, without his awareness.
In the end,
Is revealed as Baphomet (due to Asclepius belt insignia and pentagram necklace).
Has initiated the use of anti-matter to create
the Anti-Christ with the mergence of aborted fetuses.Character Intro:
Medical board member that utterly destroys Indigo’s career, because he (Asclepius) is ignorant to Indigo’s injury of vehicle accident, and pride and hubris take over true health and well-being.
Asclepius changes career focus to OBGYN, where he can secretly kill as many of other men’s children and get away with it. Even in war soldiers are demonized as baby-killers, but not those such as himself who have the permission of the mother but not the father, and not having permission of the father is part of agenda, and this is the connection with Ashkenazi- mass genocide legally.
