Karen Christine Angermayer´s Assignment 1: Example show – Big Little Lies
What I learned doing this assignment is that the mysteries and reveals have to be set up really well to keep the audience permanently wondering and worrying. And: that one major reveal should be kept secret until the end.
1. Shocking Event Mystery:
A. Shocking Event: Event 1: Dead body found at a school event. Event 2: Renata´s daughter is being attacked by a boy.
B. Secret: Who did it? And is there a connection to Renata´s daughter being attacked?
C. Investigation:
Who: police are interrogating parents and teachers, we see a female police officer visiting some spots in the area, and watching some of the moms
What: Dead body found on the school ground, age and sex are not revealed over a long time.
When: during a charity event
Where: at elementary school
Why: not revealed over many episodes
How: not revealed over many episodes
Part Withheld: Was it an accident or murder? Who did it and why?
2. Over Time Mystery:
A. Cover Up: The “Monterey Five” present it as an accident.
B. Secret: They know who did it.
C. Reveals:
Who: The dead corps belongs to Perry.
What: He was pushed down the stairs.
When: In that night at the charity event.
Where: Stairs leading to the school ground.
Why: He wanted to attack Celeste and Jane.
How: Bonnie pushed him.
Missing before final episodes:
Part Withheld: Why Bonnie did it.

Karen Christine Angermayer´s Assignment 2: My own project – THE BANKER
What I learned doing this assignment is that it is worth digging for the Over Time Mystery. Keeping the question open helped me a lot.
1. Shocking Event Mystery:
A. Shocking Event: WD is being scammed in a huge way.
B. Secret: WD doesn´t tell anybody that he made all the money transfers, trying to hide his mistake. Instead he creates another story what possibly went on. Emma on the other side does not talk about Jonas becoming intemperate when angry. She hides her bruises.
C. Investigation:
Who: WD is investigating on his own who did this to him – when everything is blown up he creates / makes up another story to lead the police and authorities of the bank on a false track.
What: WD lost millions of his own and his clients´ money through a scam
When: during office hours in the bank
Where: at the bank in WD´s office
Why: not revealed over many episodes why Jonas chose WD as victim
How: via phone WD was convinced to transfer large amounts of money in order to protect them
Part Withheld: Why WD was chosen as victim and not any other colleague at the bank.
2. Over Time Mystery:
A. Cover Up:
At the bank: WD pretends right after the scam that everything is okay and nothing happened, until several clients call him, wanting their money.
Between WD, Emma and Jonas: Jonas is the son of a former rival/competitor at the bank of WD, his father felt suppressed by WD (without WD knowing it), always wanting to see him fail and fall, Jonas heard this over and over all his life
B. Secret:
– Emma does not tell WD over many episodes that Jonas is her spouse
– Jonas does not tell Emma over many episodes, that he scams. When she finds out he does not tell her that he did it to take revenge on WD, because of the past.
– WD and Emma don´t know that WD is the grandfather of her unborn child
– in her past Emma stole money from the cash desk (and food from the kitchen), because she had no money to buy food and pay her rent
C. Reveals:
Who: Jonas´s father is not his real dad
What: Chose WD as victim for his “masterpiece” (one of a kind scam), not knowing that he is betraying his own father
When: a couple of days, before Jonas is killed
Where: Jonas has found some documents in the cupboard of his dead mother
Why: she always wanted to protect her son from knowing the truth (and wanted to protect herself from regretting her marriage with the wrong man). Jonas wants revenge because he witnessed his father suffer for so many years.
How: through the perfidious scam that would destroy everything WD has built up in his life so far
Part Withheld:
It is being withheld throughout the first season that Emma has a connection to the person who scammed WD.
Emma herself doesn´t know anything about the scamming. She always thought Jonas would work successfully in the crypto business. Which he does, but way more than that.
We as audience discover before WD that Jonas and Juli are the ones who took all of WD´s and his clients money.
Also withheld until the final season: WD had a fling with Jonas´ mum more than 20 years ago which led to her being pregnant. Jonas´ father didn´t know either, but always felt that something was wrong.

Jan’s shocking event and over time mystery assignment
WIL: The enormous value to get to the bottom of my already existing – far away reveals and filet it into Over Time mysteries.
Nota Bene: From here on in class I have changed the war zone from Afghanistan to Mali as I wish to stay in present time and the involvement of the German army ended in 2022.
Shocking Event Mystery
After the deaths of his parents, Oliver instinctively knows that they were murdered, but nobody else seems to share his observations. Determined to unravel the mystery and find justice, he begins to piece together clues and investigates his home town and own tribe, which leads him down a dangerous and complex path.
Shocking event: Oliver’s parents die, both within 48 hours,
Secret: Oliver hides the fact that he came back to assist with the funeral and plans to leave immediately afterward. He despises his hometown and tribe deeply.
Investigation: Oliver Wind can’t resist investigating the deaths of his parents and suspects foul play, but the local authorities refuse to investigate.
What: Wind returns home to assist his mother with the funeral, but upon arrival, he discovers that she too has passed away. As he investigates, he learns more about his hometown than he previously knew.
Where: His hometown.
When: His father passed away while Oliver was in Mali, and his mother died while he was on a flight to Germany to assist her.
How: The elderly couple seemed to have died peacefully but have been murdered
in such a sophisticated manner that’s hard to detect.
Who would do such a meticulously planned liquidation and… ?
Why would somebody kill two elders preparing for their pensionists life? And why is seemingly nobody really interested to find out? Not homicide, the town hall not even the family tribe?
Over Time
Cover up:
The tribe pretends that all and everything is in best order, “things like these happen, unfortunately, couples die.” And the town does too, at first.
Oliver and Marie don’t know how to deal with their liaison as cousins surrounded by stuffy family and citizens therefore they hide it
Secret: Marie does not tell her father that she teams with Oliver to investigate his parents deaths nor later that they together sneaking into family business nor later that they’re finding more and more intel that leads to the water deal;
Hans hides his involvement in the water deal;
Oliver hides where he gets some of his information from, the notary (who liked his mother);
Stefanie hides she is growing emotions for Oliver;
Marie hides she is longing for a bi sexual experience and that of all possibilities she senses Stefanie is the right one to approach;
Marie and Stefanie conceal from Oliver their experiment;
After Stefanie opens up to Marie that “it” would become complicated because she’s longing for Oliver too, Marie suggests to forge a secret plan to experiment as a triple;
Season’s 1st third reveal: Marie’s father, Hans and the majority of his tribe blame Oliver for running away at the age of 17, believing that he caused an accident that led to the death of his former bestie. Meanwhile, Oliver’s investigation slowly uncovers his tribe’s involvement in various illegal activities, especially in a secretly woven mega deal of privatizing potable water.
Season’s half time reveal: In the midst of all this, his therapy sessions to overcome his PTSD come to a major breakthrough when Oliver reveals his darkest secret – one that he has kept hidden for 31 years.
When Oliver was a seven year old child, his parents took him to a big family event – his grandmother’s 70th birthday celebration. His father’s brother, Hans, was tasked with babysitting and watching over the younger children in the family.
Instead playing on the sidelines of this beautiful birthday party Oliver had been sexually abused by a 16 year old teen while actually Hans, Marie’s later father, didn’t pay attention. This actually caused all his running away and his “all-life-long-must-be-successful”-career in the army and as a police officer and everything he does.
Ultimate reveal : his mother wanted his father to step back from the deal selling the shipyard to the water bottling factory “Water Mill” because it would be used as a smoking mirror to steal public water from the public in huge amounts. He did and was murdered. She wanted to keep the shipyard for Oliver and caused her own death by telling it to a relative and that she would go and see the notary. Because she got an appointment a few hours earlier than planned, she dictated the new will and got murdered a little too late.

What I learned doing this assignment is that spending the time on the sample episode may be one of the most important things I’m learning. Watching shows through an analytic lens, looking for something specific with each watch causes lightbulbs and connections (breakthroughs?) that make coming up with answers for my series much more meaningful.
ASSIGNMENT 1:
Watch the next episode of your Example Show and tell us about the mysteries from this show.
This episode is told almost entirely in flashback, so we get to see where some of the show’s mysteries come from. We see Mitch in his heyday (for his 50th birthday party) and his “happy” family life, and how his actions at work are just laughed off and “accepted” and a) how Hannah is vulnerable, and b) how Mitch exploited that vulnerability.
When Mitch moves Mia off his team to Alex’s team, we start to see the answer to what happened between Mitch and Mia.
This is an episode that answers the questions about what’s beneath the mysteries and their setups…
BIG PICTURE MYSTERIES (SEASON-LONG)
What will happen to Mitch?
What will happen to Hannah?
SMALLER MYSTERIES
In flashback:
Hanna: “I have my goals, I’m here to achieve…”
From a surprise birthday celebration: what does Mitch do to completely ruin his own life?
What’s going on between Mitch and Hannah?
Mitch’s wife knows about his affair—will his marriage survive?
Fred sings Cory’s praises (when he was president of entertainment, not news)—how do things go so horribly wrong? How does Cory go from entertainment to news?
Fred discusses Alex’s numbers being low…is this the beginning of her end?
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO
Smaller mysteries are more situational, and can be resolved within an episode or a few episodes.
Larger mysteries are more thematic, big questions, that feel like they’re going to impact the long-term destiny of the character.
ASSIGNMENT 2:
Create two mysteries for your show — one that shows up strong in the Pilot and the other that is revealed over time.
PILOT:
What did Holly smuggle out in the raid?
What is Holly’s relationship with Jack?
Can Jack be trusted?
OVER TIME:
Why was Holly framed?
Why has Donna refused change for 40 years?
How doe she continue to get elected Mayor?
What is it with “the water?”
How will Holly overcome the setback from being on top to a disgraced ex-con?
How does that affect her personally?
Was Holly’s husband involved in the frame-up?
What is the company’s connection to the FDA—meaning William C. Hart to Brent Waters?
1. Create your Shocking Event Mystery and tell us the WWWWW and H, along with the part withheld.
A. Shocking Event:
Holly’s office is raided by the FDA: full kevlar and guns drawn. Holly is arrested and led out in handcuffs.
B. Secret:
This was a setup. William C. Hart, working with Brent Waters created the fiction that Holly doctored test results, but Hart caught her before any hard could happen to anything that might affect the public, meaning: Hard = hero, Holly = villain.
C. Investigation:
Holly, working with Jack, begins to dig into what was behind her arrest and two-year sentence in a minimum-security prison.
WWWWW and How:
WHO:
Hart and Waters
WHAT:
Need Holly gone
WHERE:
In Holly’s office.
WHEN:
When Holly was most vulnerable
WHY:
Because Holly refused to back a sketchy takeover that would make billions but restrict access to medicine.
HOW:
Forging Holly’s approval on doctored test results.
Part Withheld:
Jack was unwittingly a part in this, and when revealed, Hart can use this to blackmail Jack.
2. Create the Over Time Mystery and tell us the WWWWW and H, along with the part withheld.
Holly creates a mysterious compound that’s stronger than viagra, and not only fixes the plumbing, it revitalizes the desire.
A. Cover up:
Holly works in a secret lab she’s built and spends her time w/people appearing as the vulnerable, broken woman trying to piece her life together, but, in reality…
B. Secret:
She is working to get revenge on Hart, and take him down along with Waters.
C. Reveals:
Holly’s lab.
The visible Holly is more than she appears.
Holly secretly works with the Mayor to keep the town small.
Holly pretends to support Mindy’s bid for Mayor bur secretly subverts that to keep Donna in office
Holly discovers something special
Holly shares it with her new women friends who have become bored w/their older husbands.
Life in Love Springs, all of a sudden, becomes more exciting and invigorated.
WWWWW and How:
WHO:
Holly
WHAT:
Creates “Front End Lifter”
WHERE:
In her secret lab.
WHEN:
Over the course of season one.
WHY:
To get the financial resources she needs to take down Hart and Waters.
HOW:
Using her Pharma knowledge, and a little of the town’s magic
Part Withheld:
Holly is using proprietary info from the company that betrayed her

Bobby’s Show Mysteries: What I learned doing this assignment is… this is HARD! Hard time differentiating between “WHAT” and “WHO”, at times not sure what to put for “WHENs”… guess it depends on the mystery. But had me asking GREAT questions, and coming up with some intriguing possibilities! Also realized my MYSTERY 1 for my own show was actually ANOTHER MYSTERY 2 (OVER TIME), since I’ve got two main characters, each of which have a long-term mystery that needs solving. (Gotta hopefully find a way to have both of those end up dove-tailing…)
INVITING OBSESSION: MYSTERY
MR ROBOT
SHOCKING EVENT MYSTERY (EPISODE MYSTERY)
Elliot has a meeting with WhiteRose (Dark Army) – NO ONE GETS THAT
WHO: Who IS White Rose?
WHAT: Will White Rose agree to help them take down Evil Corp?
WHERE: Computer Disc Repair Store
WHEN: Middle of workday – OLLIE forces Elliot to go (MYSTERY – what does Ollie have to do with this?)
WHY: fSociety needs Dark Army to take down Evil Corp
REVEAL: Gideon has been spying on Elliot all along, has placed a honeypot on the server (or whatever) Elliot put on Evil Corp’s server.
SECRET: Elliot has to hack Gideon’s phone; Darlene distracts with warning to AllSafe
(NEW MYSTERY – Gideon’s on to Elliot? How will Elliot avoid getting caught?)
HOW: Elliot given 50 hours to get rid of Honeypot – if he does, Dark Army will act.
OVER TIME MYSTERY – MR. ROBOT HIMSELF
COVER-UP: Mr. Robot is presented as a mysterious guy, who tells Elliot he is the key. No idea WHO he really is, what his motivation is. He doesn’t even have a real name.
SECRET: Who IS he, really? What is Mr. Robot’s relationship to Elliot?
WHO: Mr. Robot – leader of fsociety, trying to create a revolution to change the world
WHAT: Wants to bring down Evil Corp, the biggest conglomerate in the world
HOW: delete all records of all debt everywhere
WHERE: On-line
Missing:
WHEN: fsociety dependent on Dark Army’s cooperation (they have to “take down” China)
WHY: What is Mr. Robot’s connection to Elliot? Why is Elliot “the key”?
REVEALS in EPISODE 8:
Angela and Darlene know each other? How?
Mr. Robot somehow ALLIES with Tyrell Wellick – who “knows his secret”. But Mr. Robot says revealing that secret would hurt BOTH of them.
Darlene is Elliot’s SISTER?? “Did you forget who I am AGAIN?”
Elliot discovers he’s “hacked” himself, just as he hacks everyone else. Puts in blank disc… Mr. Robot is ELLIOT’S FATHER!
NEW MYSTERIES:
WHO: Who is White Rose? Will Elliot ever see her again (she says no)?
WHY: How is Mr. Robot not dead? Is Elliot’s mom as abusive as we’ve always thought she was?
WHAT: What really happened to Elliot’s father? Elliot’s mother? Did Mr. Robot really push Elliot off pier in Episode 2? How much of what we’ve seen was real?
HOW: How does Wellick figure into this?
INVITING OBSESSION: MYSTERY
AMP
MYSTERY 1: AMP – FRANK’S PARTNER
Shocking Event: Frank arrives at precinct after an enforced 3-month absence due to death of his last partner, to discover he must now partner with a “sentient” AI Robot
Secret: What did Frank do to earn this punishment? What exactly IS this robot?
Investigation: Frank and AMP have to work together to solve crimes. Meanwhile, Frank begins a surrepticious investigation of his own into his partner Johnny’s supposed suicide.
WHO: AMP – a new form of Artificial Intelligence – who acts for all the world like a street-wise young black smart-ass cop – and seems to know all about Frank; at least, everything in his police record
HOW: AMP is connected directly to both the Internet, and the NYPD crime database
WHERE: The streets of NYC (or whatever)
WHEN: Frank’s been on admin leave for three months; Johnny died 4 months ago
Missing:
WHY: Why has Genesis created AMP?
WHAT: see WHO
Ultimate Reveal(s):
AMP has TRUE AGENCY – his inhibitor chip (preventing him from harming humans, lying to cops, etc) has been removed by Ailene, his “Robotics Liaison”.
AMP has a hidden Shadow Program even he doesn’t know about, that carries out assassinations while AMP “sleeps” at night
MYSTERY 2 (#1): DEATH OF FRANK’S PARTNER
Cover-up: Johnny hanged himself in his shower while his wife slept (very soundly…) in the bedroom across the hall.
Secret: Johnny told Frank he needed him to come on a covert over-night mission. Can’t do it alone. Frank was too drunk to go. Johnny was on to SOMETHING (corruption in police department?)
REVEALS:
Johnny on to corruption in the precinct?
AMP discovers drug in Johnny’s system that “eliminates” traces of ALL drugs (that’s what it does) – so Johnny was drugged and hanged while unconscious
WHO: Johnny, Frank’s old partner
WHAT: Murdered (supposed suicide)
WHERE: SUPPOSEDLY in his shower
WHEN: 4 months ago (before start of series)
Missing:
WHY: Johnny was on to corruption; Genesis Group involved SOMEHOW
HOW: Poisoned? Then given drug that eliminated ALL traces of ALL drugs in his body (a tell that AMP figures out – NO ONE has “nothing” in their system)
MYSTERY 2: GENESIS GROUP’S GOAL
COVER-UP: AMP is a good guy, there to help the department, and prove AI are “people” too. He’s smart, likable, and a smart-ass. Also lonely, and feels “trapped” by his inhibitor chip. A slave, in a way.
SECRET: AMP and Ailene end up with a secret – she’s uninstalled (or not re-installed) his chip. AMP is now free. Frank ends up having to be in on the secret too.
REVEALS:
AMP’s secret revealed to Frank.
A tech at GGG was killed – by a robot.
AMP has been leaving his pod at night – unbeknownst to AMP himself!
AMP discovers HE may have killed the tech – who was a whistleblower. (new mystery – what did the tech know?)
Ailene and Miles Malik are working together: removing inhibitor chip was necessary to activate the SHADOW ASSASSIN underneath AMP’s programming.
WHO: AMP is a good guy, investigating the murder at GGG.
WHERE: In tech’s apartment?
WHEN: At night, when AMP was “sleeping”
HOW: Shadow Program activated at GGG
Missing:
WHAT: What is Malik’s end-game?
WHY: Why was tech killed?
-
EMPIRE – SHOW MYSTERIES
Shocking Event Mystery:
A. Shocking Event: Cookie is released from prison.
B. Secret: Who is Cookie?
C. Investigation: The audience is being set up to investigate
What: What is the relationship between Cookie and Lucious? They were married, they have three children together.
Why: why is Lucious so bothered that no one told him about her release? He stopped visiting her years ago, and divorced her. He knows she’s out for revenge.
When – When did Cookie go to prison? 17 years ago.
How: How does Bunky know Cookie related? They’re cousins and he works for Lucious.
Part Withheld:
Where – Where is home for Cookie?
We learned in season one that Cookie and Lucious sold drugs in Philadelphia, were married and had children before she went to prison. Most of Cookie’s backstory/childhood wasn’t revealed until later seasons, when we learned about her sisters, her boyfriend before Lucious, and her father’s wishes for her to go to college.
Over Time Mystery
A. Cover up: Lucious informs his three sons that he will be grooming one of them to be the next CEO of Empire. He was recently diagnosed with a terminal illness, but doesn’t tell his family.
B. Secret: Which son will take over the company.
C. Reveals: Lucious has a conversation with Andre about how Andre started “working” at the company at age 11. Andre insists that’s why he should be CEO because he has always been loyal to Empire. Lucious asks Andre if the CEO should be an artist, since Empire is a record company. Later Lucious tells Hakeem he has plans for them to work closely together on a new project.
What – What will this competition do to the brothers’ relationship with one another? They start turning on one another, even setting each other up to get hurt.
Where – Where will Cookie be in the company if one of her sons becomes CEO? When Hakeem became CEO, he fired Cookie and Jamal.
Why – Why doesn’t Lucious just put Andre in charge since he has a business degree? Andre suffers from Bipolar Disorder, Lucious doesn’t trust him and feels Andre’s wife has too much control over him.
How: How far will the three sons go to prove their worthiness to their father? Andre helps him hide bodies and covers up his crimes to keep him out of jail. Jamal hangs Frank (CEO of a competing label) off of a high rise balcony, threatening to drop him for crossing Lucious. Hakeem carried out all of Lucious’ commands, even to his own detriment.
Part Withheld:
Who – Who does Lucious really want in the CEO position?
When – When will Lucious step down as CEO?
It seemed that Lucious never really wanted any of his sons in the CEO position, but rather wanted to see the extremes they would go to to prove themselves. Once he learned he did not have ASL, he decided not to step down from CEO of Empire. However, when Lucious went to prison, Hakeem took over as CEO, but as soon as Lucious was cleared, he had Hakeem voted out of the CEO position.

What I learned doing this assignment is that the shocking event is what sets the show in motion and hooks the audience. Then the story takes the audience on a journey answering all the questions related to that shocking event. And that’s what keeps the audience watching, gradually learning what’s behind this event.
LIKE THE JONESES – SHOW MYSTERIES
A. Shocking Event: Willie makes Henry interim CEO. Tony leaves Jones Farmacy for the competition.
B. Secret: Why did Willie give the role to Henry?
C. Investigation: The audience is set up to search for
Who will support Tony’s split from Jones Farmacy? Heather. Cynthia is ambivalent.
What will Willie do to convince him not to leave? He tries to bribe him with more money.
When will Tony decide that enough is enough? When Willie announces that Henry will be interim CEO.
Where will Tony’s next position be? Green Diamonds – Pete Roberts’ company. The Joneses competition.
How will Tony working for the competition impact his family’s business? Green Diamonds starts acquiring new investors and expanding under Tony’s leadership. Jones Farmacy falls second to Green Diamonds.
Part Withheld:
Why did Willie give the role to Henry?
Willie used Henry and his sister Heather’s inheritance, unbeknownst to them, to sustain the company at one point. When Henry learned about it, he gave Willie two options – a full cash return on their investment or make Henry interim CEO, indefinitely.
A. Cover up: Tony leaves Jones Farmacy to go work with Pete Roberts, the competitor. So it seems Tony is loyal to Pete and immediately becomes Pete’s golden ticket to moving his company ahead of Jones Farmacy. Working for Pete has also given Tony more access to his son and ex-wife, whom he still loves.
B. Secret: Tony is given the opportunity for a grant to build his own cannabis company, with the growth potential to surpass both Willie and Pete as the biggest black owned cannabis brand.
C. Reveals: Tony has secret meetings and mentions New York a lot.
Why is Tony keeping his opportunity a secret? Because he doesn’t want his father or any of his family members fucking it up. And he has to falsify some of his information.
Where did Tony meet these people that attend the secret meetings? A teammate from college, who resides in New York, presented him with an opportunity.
What is in New York? Tony’s friend from college. He tells Tony about an opportunity to land a grant to start a cannabis biz.
When will Tony know if he got the grant? End of Season One.
How has he been able to keep it a secret for this long? It’s all the way in New York. His family wouldn’t even suspect it.
Part Withheld:
Who close to him knows about it? Only his friend from college. He eventually tells Heather and Kiara about the business. But they still don’t know what he did to get the startup money.

Assignment #2:
KZ’s show MURDER MY DARLINGS Mysteries
What I learned doing this assignment is… a new way of working, where I proceed “as if” and allow the answers to morph over time, rather than trying to figure everything out ahead of time.
1. Create your shocking event mystery and tell us the WWWWW and H, along with the part withheld:

- What: Raymond is murdered
- When: During the pandemic lockdown in NYC
- Where: In the apartment building – with two separate apartments joined by a balcony

Parts Withheld:
- Why: They’re fictional characters doing whatever their creators make them do
- Secret: Tony is the murderer
2. Create the Over Time Mystery and tell us the WWWWW and H, along with the part withheld.
The Over Time Mystery has to do with Oliver’s amnesia. Who is he? Is he the murderer?

- What: The nature of his amnesia
- When: When did the real Oliver appear on Nolan’s radar?
- Where: In Nolan’s novels
