    Steve Jones – Transformational Events

What I learned from doing this assignment is the best script structuring comes from a process.

    Act 1:

    Opening

Harry is on duty when a ship arrives from Earth. He finds it all routine and easily spots someone that the AI system and spotter robots missed who turns out to be there illegally. They are taken away pleading for help.

    Inciting
    Incident

Harry sees how desperate the illegals are to escape from Earth when he doesn’t stop an illegal getting through and he is killed in front of Harry.

Harry starts to accumulate allies/friends/partners when Buzzard forces Harry to have a robot partner who he wants Harry to teach his tracking techniques to.

    Turning
    Point

Harry’s dread of being sent to Earth is brought home when Buzzard tells Harry he needs to solve this case using his special powers or he’ll be out of the job and that will mean he’s on borrowed times on Mars. The future of Mars’ tourist trade and business relations with Earth are at stake. This is a career defining or career destroying situation.

Peep tells Vor that the police have the latest shipment and Vor looses his shit.

    Act 2:

    New
    plan

Harry ups his game with the investigation. Vor instructs Peep to get Harry out of his way.

    Plan
    in action

Harry finds out about the smuggling and interviews Vor. Carina arrives from earth and sees Harry leaving Vor’s clinic. Vor plans for the next delivery on the assumption that Harry will be out of the way.

    Midpoint
    Turning Point

Harry experiences a very different life on Mars when Carina accuses Harry of being the killer and Peep tries to kill Harry. He adds to his allies/friends/partners when he teams up with Carina.

    Act 3:

    Rethink
    everything

Carina believes Harry who now understands more from her about why the immigrants are risking so much.

Harry risks his badge by breaking into Vor’s Clinic. Carina and Harry save Javine who they then have to protect. She is the last illegal Carina sent through and they rescue her from Vor.

    New
    plan

Harry is no longer driven by selfish needs as he faces his duty to catching the killer and changing the Immigration policy by going to Earth to set the plan for Vor’s capture in motion.

    · Turning Point: Huge failure / Major shift

Harry is arrested on Earth, has his Martian passport taken and is trapped in his version of Hell. Vor has a man inside the organisation Carina runs and knew their plan all along. He’s now got Harry out of the way and there’s non-one to stop him finishing his serum.

Harry works harder than he has done in his whole life to escape so he can set himself up as the next illegal. He returns to Mars illegally to lure Vor out and catch him red handed. Now he is exactly the same as those he used to spot and send back.

    Act 4:

    Climax/Ultimate
    expression of the conflict

Vor is aware of Harry’s plan and prepared for him. It’s a trap!

No longer a loner and with everyone else’s help, Harry defeats Vor in the clinic where he’s been extracting the substance he’s been smuggling from Earth inside the illegals.

    · Resolution

Harry exposes the real mastermind behind the immigration policy and it is dismantled.

    Mark Hammond’s Transformational Events

What I learned doing this assignment is: doing this process increases your reservoir of nuggets that you can use it the script.

    Act 1:

    Opening :

The manager of the rap film crew is fist-bumping, nodding his head in the affirmative, pleased, and points to different locations , framing them with his hands. *** He is determined to overcome his dyslexia handicap and find a trophy girlfriend by making a rap video.***

While the crew is looking around, he hands the real estate lady a pouch for payment that reads payroll. ***He hired the crew and rents the location to shoot the video with mis-allocated funds that he plans on paying back.***

    Inciting incident:

While verbally abusing the handyman setting up the lights and sound system. causing him to trip the electrical system, locking all of the doors and shutters with riot gates. They are now locked in a strange house with the serial killer.

He recognizes he’s on the killers turf, and at a geographical disadvantage. He must explore the surroundings to make a level playing field.

    Turning Point:

The manger discovers the lead singer is mysteriously missing.

He doesn’t panic even though he is afraid and continues to set up for the video.

He displays an air of confidence

He tells everyone it’s an All-Hallows Eve prank.

***He belittles his staff and then discovers that there is a killer on the premises

***(He regrets that his crew member was killed and takes responsibility for it.)

    Act 2:

    Plan:

He postpones filming and tries to find the lead singer

    Plan in action:

He searches for the missing lead singer to no avail.

He asks them to try to open the doors and windows but they can’t

He has everyone attempt to call the lead singer with their cell phones, but there are no signals.

    Midpoint Turning Point:

The lead singer is found dead… mutilated, and he suspects the handy man is the killer.

The manager reaffirms that he did see someone else in the house.

The manager realizes this is real, and he has to take on a leadership role.

    New plan:

Find a way out. The manager has to plan a way out and keep the group together and find the killer before he kills someone else in the group.

*** He tries to solve the killer problem on his own but he is unable to.

(He realizes that he can’t do it all and that he needs help to succeed.)***

***He realizes that he will need his team’s help to (A) survive and ( B ) make the video so he stops treating them as subordinates.

***(He doesn’t give up or run away from his dilemma as a loser would.)****

    Act 3:

    Rethink everything:

The manager makes a bold stance and takes charge.

He orders everyone to find some sort of a weapon

    New plan:

He teaches the crew how to use their weapons in a defensive mode; because he’s never been on the offense in his entire life.

Turning Point: Huge failure / Major shift

The manager watches as another member of his crew is brutally murdered,

and he did little to prevent it.

He realizes his plan does not work. Defense is not the way to kill this serial killer.

The manager is really feeling like a coward-that it his fault they followed someone that really doesn’t know what he’s doing, and it caused the death of their friends.

****He comes up with a new plan that includes the others kills the killer.

He becomes a courageous leader in his heart and is bubbling over with newfound confidence.***

    Act 4:

    Climax/Ultimate expression of the conflict

The manager musters up his courage, and volunteers to face the serial killer all alone.

He surrenders his cowardly self to the serial killer, to lure him in close. He knows the killer underestimates him and will oblige.

When the killer gets close, he’s surprised that the manager leaps up to attack him. The manager is putting up a ferocious fight, but he’s losing.

He is surprised when the crew springs in to action and helps kill the serial killer.

    Resolution:

The manager gets the respect and honor he was seeking. The love of his life and the video produced.

*** He confesses, makes restitution, makes a successful rap video and is no longer a coward, fraud and loser.

***(He makes good on his word.)***

    Lesson 6: Transformational Events

Subject line: Stephen Maynard Transformational Events

“What I learned doing this assignment is…?” This exercise is the perfect formula for describing the arc.

The BOYS start the movie as young, naïve, selfish,
    and exploitative.
    <div>

    OLD WAYS

Self-centered and selfish – They think they can do no wrong and show that they are in it for themselves.

Naïve – They think they can outwit the banker.

Conceited & Arrogant – Looking to Exploit Girls. – Girls turn the tables on the boys and make fools of them.

Out to snooker others for self-benefit – They rip off a man in the parking lot.

    NEW WAYS

Compassion: They are profoundly moved when they see a woman in need.

Responsible: They decide to intervene to help the woman but fail as they are no match for their advocacies.

Honorable: They do the right thing by the girls but come to realize that they are being manipulated by the girls. They must grow up and wise up and fast.

Fortitude: Realizing that they are up against insurmountable odds, they back off, evaluate, and recommit to the fight.

Altruism: They face the superior deadly forces of the coalition to rescue the old lady.

The BOYS’ lives are changed by these transformational events. At the end of the movie, the boys are upstanding mature young men willing to serve others and society in general.

These scenes are to be integrated in my outline.
