    Etta’s Intriguing Patterns

What I learned from this assignment that is, even though I got slightly wordier, it got more intriguing as I went along. I took my concept and went through all the questions.

Concept: A pious Quaker woman inherits shares of a fracking corporation and a board seat and tries to continue her environmental activism while doing her board duties but finds herself drawn into trying to change the corporation from within.

Concept: A pious Quaker woman inherits shares of a fracking corporation and a board seat while trying to continue her environmental activism and attend board meetings, but finds herself sucked into representing the corporation to larger and larger audiences.

    • A. Establish something shocking and point to the terrible things it could mean.

    • D. Character 1 is convinced/worried/wondering that Character 2 has done _____________.

A pious Quaker woman inherits shares of a fracking corporation and a board seat while attending protests incognito between board meetings, but another board member discovers this and manipulates her into representing the corporation to the public and the press.

    • E. But maybe it is all wrong.

A pious Quaker woman inherits shares of a fracking corporation and a board seat while attending protests incognito between board meetings, but another board member discovers this and manipulates her into presenting corporate lies to the public and the press.

    • F. A Pattern that Leads to Future Consequences

A pious Quaker woman inherits shares of a fracking corporation and a board seat while attending protests incognito between board meetings, but when another board member discovers this and manipulates her into presenting corporate lies to the public and the press, she starts leaking details to the press.

    • G. If he does ________________, that means ___Intrigue_____.

A pious Quaker woman inherits shares of a fracking corporation and a board seat while attending protests incognito between board meetings, but when another board member discovers this and manipulates her into presenting corporate lies to the public and the press, she starts searching for studies done on water quality. Why are there none?

    • H. State the mystery.

A pious Quaker woman inherits shares of a fracking corporation and a board seat while attending protests incognito between board meetings, but when another board member discovers this and manipulates her into presenting corporate lies to the public and press, suddenly a long buried damaging scientific study about surface water appears in a local blog. Where did that come from?

    • I. Should be/could be _______, but it is even worse.

A pious Quaker woman inherits shares of a fracking corporation and a board seat while attending protests incognito between board meetings, but when another board member discovers this and manipulates her into presenting corporate lies to the public and press, suddenly a long buried damaging scientific study about surface water appears in a local blog. Turns out people are getting cancer. And dying.

    • J. Intense language.

WIL: Each and every assignment brings something new, deep, and intriguing to the characters, storyline or the plot. I rewrote my entire seasons and had to change concept (logline sentence) I worked on in this assignment, and I’m finally comfortable with the latest version, as such:

Logline: When the mythical gods face imminent loss of power, a Hawaiian teen must recover stolen artifacts and unite feuding pantheons to avert the annihilation of divine and mortal realms.

    Jeffrey Alan Chase’s Intrigue Patterns

What I learned doing this assignment is I felt I already had a lot of intrigue in my bible. Just found a whole bunch more.

    A. Establish something shocking and point to the terrible things it could mean.

Colonel Keith Kane, the Army CID agent hunting down Noah until recently was a stand-up, pleasant and professional guy who was admired by his peers.

    B. Strong statement; question about something underhanded beneath the surface.

Kane has been possessed by a demon whose mission it is to kill Noah.

    C. Question that points to hidden agendas, hidden identity, conspiracy, etc..

How can Kane still access the NSA database to search for Noah? One or more of his superiors are also possessed.

    D. Character 1 is convinced/worried/wondering that Character 2 has done _____________.

When Kane corners him in an abandoned house, Noah is convinced and confused he’s seeing a ghost – the ghost of Abel, his best friend who was killed in Afghanistan. Noah wasn’t aware that Abel had a twin brother: Kane.

    E. But maybe it is all wrong.

If Noah is the wrong guy for anything that has to do with the backpack… then why does he feel so strongly driven to learn who created it and why?

    F. A Pattern that Leads to Future Consequences

Noah has a pattern of belittling his feeling of joy when someone discovers salvation with an item in the backpack. Gino has a pattern of joking about his feelings of suicide. James has a pattern of working on unreliable “James’ time”. Catherine has a pattern of belittling the power of her emotions. Mary has a pattern of allowing blame and guilt to direct her actions with her family. Father Zeke has a pattern of subtext, similar to Noah’s, that his words of denial often conflict with his actions.

    G. If he does ________________, that means ___Intrigue_____.

If Noah allows himself to go into insulin shock, it means he needs to see what God will do.

If Kane pleasantly asks information of someone, it means he plans to use it against Noah.

If James doesn’t show up on time, it means he’s teaching Noah a lesson he needs to learn.

If Catherine says she’s, “working on something” it means she’s learned a clue about her family.

If Gino says he’s going to commit suicide, he just might do it.

If Mary writes a big check, it means she might be embezzling from her family.

If Father Zeke has to make “some calls”, he is setting up something for Noah.

    H. State the mystery.

Who created the backpack and why?

    I. Should be/could be _______, but it is even worse.

Kane could just be angry over the death of his twin brother, but he is driven by the demon that possesses him to execute Noah.

    J. Intense language.

Noah denies that he’s on a mission from God and only will admit that he is on a crusade to learn how the backpack was created so he can make a fortune from it.

I think each exercise makes me see the story as a whole in different more interesting ways. Sorry, some of these go over one line.

    STAR ROVER CHARACTER Exercise 8

Ryan Gordon: After escaping the clutches of Hermes, a secret government agency that procures kids with psychic ability, all the great Star Rover ever wanted was to become Ryan Gordon, a normal teenager. But Dr. Blaine, head of Hermes has other plans for him now that they’ve made contact with alien spirits. Ryan’s the only human ever found who can channel alien spirits into human hosts called receptacles.

A: Establish something shocking and the terrible things it could mean.

As Ryan delves deeper into the spirit realm, he discovers a chilling possibility—the alien entities might be a ruse. Is Hermes orchestrating a deadly gambit, manipulating Ryan’s unique gift in a deadly experiment?

B: Strong statement; question about something underhanded beneath the surface.

Indigo’s warm greeting chills Ryan as she whispers, “You can’t hide.” Is she hinting at Hermes’ relentless pursuit, does she mean running away from making friends and relationships, or does she harbor secrets darker than Ryan’s own?

C: Question that points to hidden agendas, hidden identity, conspiracy, etc.

As Hermes closes in, the school’s safety hangs by a thread. Is Ryan merely collateral, or does the agency’s enigmatic interest hint at a grander, more sinister scheme that includes some members of the student body?

    D: Character 1 is convinced/worried/wondering that Character 2 has done ___________.

Indigo senses an encroaching darkness around Ryan. Is it Hermes’ looming threat, or the paranoid musings of a girl too attuned to the shadows?

E: But maybe it is all wrong.

Perhaps Indigo’s fears are unfounded. To discern truth from paranoia, one way to find out. Have Ryan meet her grandmother, Madam Olga the town psychic. But the meeting’s fallout is more damning than anticipated.

F: A pattern that leads to future consequences:

A simple visit to Madam Olga spirals into chaos, resulting in Ryan’s ostracization and a dire ultimatum to the school—expel Ryan, or face Hermes’ wrath.

G: If he does ____________, that means intrigue.

Should Ryan admit to his spectral communications, Indigo’s foreboding visions materialize, confirming the looming shadow’s existence.

    H: State the mystery.

We know Ryan was escaped from a government agency that used psychic kids to find enemies. Why are they looking for him now after all these years in obscurity? What does he possess that makes him their prime target?

    I: Should be/could be ____________, but it’s even worse.

Dr. Blaine’s neglectful leniency towards Ryan masks a sinister agenda. She bides her time, awaiting a long-lost soul’s return—a boy trapped within a computer blip, with Ryan as his unlikely savior.

    J: Intense Language.

Amidst betrayals and unearthly connections, the haunting experiment’s casualties, Seth’s dark past, and the enigma of the encroaching alien spirits weave a tapestry of intrigue, with Ryan at its tumultuous center.

    Bob’s Intrigue Patterns

What I learned: Very helpful having the examples in the lesson otherwise it might be overwhelming.

    1. Pull out your TV Pitch Bible. Read through it and find ONE line you would like to be more intriguing.

From the Character Descriptions: MC(SO) Constantine “Connie” Gazis, a retired Navy SEAL is embroiled in a covert struggle for survival.

    2. Rethink that line using ALL these patterns:

    A. Establish something shocking and point to the terrible things it could mean.

MC(SO) Constantine “Connie” Gazis, retired Navy SEAL, overcome by revenge against a cowardly Marine he holds responsible for the death of his swim buddy, joins Leisa’s Rogue Warriors with the hope that he will get even with the Marine responsible.

    B. Strong statement; question about something underhanded beneath the surface.

MC(SO) Constantine “Connie” Gazis, retired Navy SEAL, plans to manipulate Leisa’s Rogue Warriors to carry out his plan to destroy the Marine unit responsible for the death of his swim buddy.

    C. Question that points to hidden agendas, hidden identity, conspiracy, etc..

MC(SO) Constantine “Connie” Gazis, retired Navy SEAL, plans to manipulate Leisa – who is secretly aware of Connie’s plan — to carry out his vendetta to destroy the Marine unit responsible for the death of his swim buddy.

    D. Character 1 is convinced/worried/wondering that Character 2 has done _____________.

MC(SO) Constantine “Connie” Gazis, former Navy SEAL, lost his swim buddy because of the cowardice of a Marine, causes Leisa to worry she made a mistake adding him to the Rogue Warriors.

    E. But maybe it is all wrong.

MC(SO) Constantine “Connie” Gazis, a former Navy SEAL, appears to only be concerned with finding and eliminating the Marine responsible for his swim buddy’s death, but may just be using that as a cover for something worse, his spying on his teammates.

    F. A Pattern that Leads to Future Consequences

MC(SO) Constantine “Connie” Gazis, the ultimate Navy SEAL, but will his quest for revenge against the Marine he holds responsible for the death of his swim buddy, place the Rogue Warriors at risk..

    G. If he does ________________, that means ___Intrigue_____.

MC(SO) Constantine “Connie” Gazis, a former Navy SEAL, the most combat-experienced member of the Rogue Warriors would always place his team above all others unless his professionalism is overcome by his determination to seek revenge for the loss of his swim buddy.

    H. State the mystery.

MC(SO) Constantine “Connie” Gazis, a former Navy SEAL, the most combat-experienced member of the Rogue Warriors, frequently places his unknown mission above that of the Rogue Warriors.

    I. Should be/could be _______, but it is even worse.

MC(SO) Constantine “Connie” Gazis, a highly decorated Navy SEAL, should be the poster boy of loyalty and patriotism, but will his vendetta against a fellow sailor destroy that reputation?

    J. Intense language.

MC(SO) Constantine “Connie” Gazis, a highly decorated Navy SEAL, should be the poster boy of loyalty and patriotism, but will his drive to kill impact the diplomacy required of the Rogue Warriors?

    3. Replace the existing line.

MC(SO) Constantine “Connie” Gazis, retired Navy SEAL, plans to manipulate Leisa – who is secretly aware of Connie’s plan — to carry out his vendetta to destroy the Marine unit responsible for the death of his swim buddy.

    Denice’s Intriguing Patterns
What I learned doing this assignment is that so far in the pitch bible I didn’t have the specifics that will make this more intriguing. I kept digging until I found new ways to describe using a single thought instead of multiple thoughts in one sentence.

This is the line that started my process: “Maya grapples with deception, dream creatures, and the revelation of her father’s true identity”, but it morphed, so I just went with it.

My choice: Was Maya’s father kidnapped by a monster or is she having another waking nightmare?

A: Establish something shocking: Maya only wanted to save her father, not be the savior of the dream world and die.

    B. Statement, question about something underhanded: In searching for her kidnapped father in the world of dreams, she discovers he’s lied to her her whole life.

    C. Questions that point to hidden agenda’s etc.: Is Maya a pawn in a conspiracy to steal secrets from dreamers for power and greed in the real world?

    D. Character 1 convinced/worried about Character 2: Maya worries about what other lies her father has told.

    E. But maybe it is wrong: Was Maya’s father kidnapped by a monster or is it another waking nightmare?

    F. A pattern for future consequences: Maya lies to those in the dream world to protect herself, but won’t know who to trust when her enemies close in.

    G. Maya doesn’t know that saving her kidnapped father means she might have to kill the Dark Dreamer, the mother she never knew she had.

    H. State the mystery: Maya will have to save her kidnapped father even if she has a bounty on her head and a hidden group who wants her dead.

    I. Should be/could be: Maya’s entitled life is easy until her father is kidnapped by a monster and taken to a dream world where her life is at stake.

    J. Intense language: Maya didn’t intend to jeopardize the existence of the dream world and reality.

    Lenore Bechtel’s Intrigue Patterns

What I learned from this assignment is several methods of putting intrigue into a single line.

Here is this line I’d like to improve:

Lilly Brandon, divorcee and frequently rejected novelist, seeks fame through Joshua and happiness that’s eluded her since putting her baby out for adoption.

    Intrigue patterns”

    1. Establish something shocking and the terrible things it could mean.

Lilly Brandon hopes working for demanding but loveable Hypnotist Joshua will bring her recognition as a writer and the ability to forget her traumatic teenage pregnancy and her stupid marriage to a gay who divorced her. So far Joshua hasn’t demanded anything illegal, and if he does and she obeys, maybe he’ll see how superior she is to the girlfriends he hires as her helpers.

    B. Strong statement; question about something underhanded beneath the surface.

Lilly Brandon is Hypnotist Joshua’s unappreciated Ms. Efficiency who accomplishes whatever he wants whenever he wants it, in spite of the parade of incompetent beauties he hires and admires more than the one he should recognize as right for him—her!

    C. Question that points to hidden agendas, hidden identity, conspiracy, etc..

Lilly Brandon is shrewd enough to keep scandal reporter Quinten at bay while Joshua helps schitzo Timothy fake-rob a bank and safecracker Tyrell fake-fail at opening Dr. Dan’s safe, but will Joshua ever recognize how much he truly needs her?

    D. Character 1 is convinced/worried/wondering that Character 2 has done _____________.

Lilly Brandon knows that Joshua’s zany methods of reinforcing his hypnotic suggestions with reality depend upon her setting up the possibilities, but he takes her for granted.

    E. But maybe it is all wrong.

Maybe Lilly shouldn’t be so efficient and let Joshua’s pranks get him in trouble, establishing her heroine status when she bails him out.

    F. A Pattern that Leads to Future Consequences

Lilly Brandon manages to get rid of one Joshua girlfriend after another, but if the pattern continues, pride will make her quit and let his business deteriorate.

    G. If he does ________________, that means ___Intrigue_____.

If Joshua hired another pretty girl, that means Lilly will absolutely need to quit him, but then she’d miss the constant challenge she has keeping him from destroying the office’s respectability.

    H. State the mystery.

Will Lilly Brandon’s ambitions for herself be enough to encourage Joshua to hypnotize Quinten and tell him what to write?

    1. Should be/could be _______, but it is even worse.

It should be that Quinten followed Joshua’s suggestion to write no wrong about the office, but in Lilly’s mind, it’s even worse. What Quinten wrote turned simple Sally into a celebrity.

    J. Intense language.

Lilly Brandon takes pride in accomplishing whatever Hypnotist Joshua asks, but how will she feel if his past incarceration becomes public and their book plunges off the best-selling list?

    Sunil Pappu’s Intrigue Patterns

“What I learned doing this assignment is… that it is really interesting to see how a line can be written with intrigue using the intrigue patterns in ten different ways”

OLD LINE: Lina: Yet, her infallibility is marred by a past blunder, having unknowingly entangled herself in the very network she now seeks to dismantle.

    Rewritten using Intriguing Patterns:

    A. Establish something shocking and point to the terrible things it could mean.

Lina helped the Hawala network when she betrayed Priya’s father by implicating him in a financial scandal that led to his public disgrace. Can she foresee Priya’s downfall too?

    B. Strong statement; question about something underhanded beneath the surface.

Lina betrayed her colleague when she implicated him in a financial scandal that led to his public disgrace. What will she do to his daughter, Priya?

    C. Question that points to hidden agendas, hidden identity, conspiracy, etc..

If Priya wants to clear her father’s name, she will need Lina’s help. Will she seek it after finding out who betrayed her father? And how do we know Lina is not going to do it again?

    D. Character 1 is convinced/worried/wondering that Character 2 has done _____________.

Priya is wondering where she’s seen those puzzles that Lina solves. She dismisses the flashback since her father has no friends. Is she hallucinating from her pills again?

    E. But maybe it is all wrong.

Since Priya joined the team Lina’s predictions have been less accurate. She is definitely triggered. And, why does she have a picture hidden in her desk with Priya’s father?

    F. A Pattern that Leads to Future Consequences

Lina betrayed Priya’s father when she implicated him in a financial scandal that led to his public disgrace. How do we know she will not betray anyone else?

    G. If he does ________________, that means ___Intrigue_____.

If Lina can betray her colleague by implicating him in a financial scandal to help the Hawala network, does that mean she is working as a mole?

    H. State the mystery.

Lina says she wants to take down the corrupt Hawala network but she helped them by implicating Priya’s father in a financial scandal that led to his public disgrace. Who is she really working for?

    I. Should be/could be _______, but it is even worse.

While Lina is seen by everyone as the all-knowing “Oracle” she is not entirely without her flaws. It’s true that her predictions have mostly come true, but could it be that some of those were orchestrated by her?

    J. Intense language.

Lina is the all-knowing “Oracle” but even she could not have predicted that one day she would be working to take down the network she once helped together with the daughter of the colleague she once betrayed.

    Jerry Robbins Intrigue Patterns
What I learned doing this assignment was that this story can be made much more intriguing on many levels. This lesson helped me see the different areas and levels where intrigue can occur.

    2. Intrigue Patterns:

      • A. Shocking Revelation:

        • “A clandestine holographic rebellion surfaces, pointing to unthinkable betrayals that could shatter the very fabric of Holo-Network City.”
      • B. Strong Statement/Underhanded:

        • “Behind the holographic facade, a sinister force orchestrates events, posing a strong statement – is there something underhanded brewing beneath the illusion?”
      • C. Question of Hidden Agendas:

      • G. If-Then Intrigue:

        • “If Mara Voss achieves her hidden agenda, it means a devastating shift in power dynamics, leaving Holo-Network City teetering on the brink of chaos.”
      • H. Stating the Mystery:

        • “Amidst holographic threads, a mystery unfolds – who, or what, is the true architect behind the rebellion, and what secrets are hidden in the interplay of light and deception?”
      • I. Should Be Worse, But It Is:

        • “In a city where perfection should reign, the rebellion reveals a reality far darker; a betrayal that should be inconceivable, but it is even worse.”
      • J. Intense Language:

        • “In the heart of Holo-Network City, the holographic rebellion ignites an intense storm of conspiracies, treachery, and a looming darkness threatening to engulf everything.”
    3. Revised Line:

    • E. But maybe it is all wrong.

But what if he is wrong and Robyn fails her mission and humanity is lost.

    • F. A Pattern that Leads to Future Consequences

Establish something shocking and the terrible things it could mean.

Thirty years ago, Diana Sagraves, a neurobiologist, played God by inventing the core of the transfer procedure, which will disrupt how we think about death and identity.

Strong statement; question about something underhanded beneath the surface.

Thirty years ago, neurobiologist Diana Sagraves invented the core of the transfer procedure. Was patenting it a sign of her need for control, or protection against being sidelined?

Question that points to hidden agendas, hidden identity, conspiracy, etc..

Did Diana really invent the core of the transfer procedure by herself?

Character 1 is convinced/worried/wondering that Character 2 has done _____________.

Thirty years ago, neurobiologist Diana worried that Peter, her backer, would seize control of the transfer procedure for his own purposes.

But maybe it is all wrong.

Thirty years ago, neurobiologist Diana Sagraves invented the core of the transfer procedure. But was it her own research she patented?

A Pattern that Leads to Future Consequences

Having stolen the research for the core of the transfer procedure thirty years ago, neurobiologist Diana Sagraves will stop at nothing become one of today’s test subjects.

If he does ________________, that means ___Intrigue_____.

If Diana Sagraves, the neurobiologist, steals the research that’s the key to the transfer procedure, it means she will patent it to secure a place on the project forever.

    State the mystery.

How did Diana Sagraves, an unexceptional neurobiologist, come up with the key breakthrough that kickstarted the transfer procedure project?

    <strong style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Should be/could be _______, but it is even worse.

Although neurobiologist Diana Sagraves should be thrilled at the possibility of consciousness transfer, she worries that it will never come to fruition.

    Intense language.

Thirty years ago, neurobiologist Diana Sagraves faced sexual harassment as the only woman working on consciousness transfer. But she made the breakthrough that got the respect she craved.

    BRIAN BULL – INTRIGUE PATTERNS

“What I learned from doing this assignment is…
I have to stop being a perfection!!!

    ASSIGNMENT
Using Intrigue Patterns, describe some aspect of your story or characters.

    1. Pull out your TV Pitch Bible. Read through it and find ONE line you would like to be more intriguing.

    2. Rethink that line using ALL of these patterns, as I did above:

With the “psychic” glasses Jim “foresees” his future wife, Gloria. He also “foresees” Jezebel, Zelda’s sister, attempt to murder Zelda at the hospital!

    A. Establish something shocking and point to the terrible things it could mean.

Having fun with his new found “toy,” Dr. Brown may be in for more than he bargained for when he “foresees” his future wife and an attempted murder.

    B. Strong statement; question about something underhanded beneath the surface.

Dr. Brown goes from ordinary optometrist to psychic. Rumors circulate that he is working with the devil.

    C. Question that points to hidden agendas, hidden identity, conspiracy, etc..

Zelda suffers a heart attack and Dr. Brown suddenly becomes a psychic. People begin to wonder, “Maybe Dr. Brown put a spell or a curse on Zelda? Maybe he’s a secret High Wizard?”

    D. Character 1 is convinced/worried/wondering that Character 2 has done _____________.

Delores is suspicious of Dr. Brown’s new abilities of foreseeing the future and Zelda’s hospitalization – making Dr. Brown a prime suspect.

    E. But maybe it is all wrong.

Everyone knows Dr. Brown is pragmatic but now he’s predicting things in the future. Something’s wrong.

    F. A Pattern that Leads to Future Consequences

Dr. Brown is predicting the future but he’s leaving out important details or at least his predictions are accurate but only so far than there’s a dramatic turn, usually for the worse.

    G. If he does ________________, that means ___Intrigue_____.

Just because Dr. Brown is making predictions and Zelda went to the hospital doesn’t mean Dr. Brown put her there or that he stole her crystal ball.

    H. State the mystery.

Where did Dr. Brown get these “psychic” powers? How is it that Zelda winds-up in the hospital?

    I. Should be/could be _______, but it is even worse.

It should be applauded that Dr. Brown has these new abilities but he must have made a pact with the devil.

    J. Intense language.

Dr. Brown is pragmatic in every way and now he’s a “psychic”? The universe works in mysterious ways – NOT!

    BWTV-AI Module 2 – Lesson 8: Writing With Intrigue!

    Sylvia’s Intrigue Patterns

What I learned doing this assignment is…great ways to up the lines!

    Original Line:

“A blame game begins with the hospital board.”

    <ul type=”disc”>

  • A. Establish something shocking and point to the terrible things it could mean.
  • The Hospital Board bans Emily from entering the pediatric ward fearing she is a part of murdering the disappearing children.

Replaced the Original line with the one above.
