Word to my classmates. This exercise is laborious, but very critical. You may first be asked for an outline or treatment of your story by a producer or agent before they ask for the script. This exercise will come in handy.

Ken Wood’s Horror Outline Version 1

What I learned: Detailed Outlines with action descriptions and purposes for the action work to make the story fit the genre and also achieve a viable, original story! This was the first script that I spent several months just mulling over the outline, learning about the horror genre, and creating the story from beginning to end with actions that a rich in purpose and horror elements. Once I had this detailed outline essentially worked out, the story started flowing with much more intensity and speed. I have finished my first draft and have been tweaking the script with each new lesson. Hal seems to come up with one skill after another to help elevate a story and get it marketable.

Script Title: I LOST THE SPIDER

Genre: This is a horror-genre story with a mix of mystery and international thriller mixed in.

Logline: The longer an arachnologist keeps a mysterious, new, highly-venomous Amazonian spider alive, the more it kills and multiplies, and the questions remain, “How did this monster come to exist?” and, “Should it be allowed to live?”

ACT 1

EXT. SHIPPING PORT, BRAZIL – DAY p.1

A CAPTAIN and four family CREWMEN finish loading an old cargo boat with bananas. One of the crew finds some SPIDER webbing and finds it is unusually sticky and tough. We see the leg of a large spider disappear into the banana shipment.

EXT. SHIPPING PORT, U.S.A – DAY p.1

DOCK The old cargo boat slams into the dock, bounces and keeps slamming into the dock. The PORT SUPERVISOR and PORT ASSISTANT try to get the hysterical Captain to turn off the engine to no avail. Port Assistant goes down into the SLEEPING BIRTH, finds four Crewmen’s dead bodies, and is horrified. Port Supervisor goes down into the ENGINE ROOM to turn off the engine. The Spider kills him. Port Assistant watches the death and is horrified again. The Captain comes and shuts the engine room hatch and locks the Spider in.

INT. PORT AUTHORITY OFFICE – CONTINUOUS p.7

The distraught Captain sits in a chair blurting out, in Portuguese, details of the deaths to state medical examiner KEATON and Port Assistant.

EXT. DOCK/BOAT – CONTINUOUS p.9

SHERIFF MAUER investigates and gives us a closer look at the dead Crewmen in the sleeping birth. He gets halfway down into the engine room when Keaton comes running warning that the killer Spider is still down there. The Spider tries to catch him with a silk strand. The Sheriff has to cut the silk off of his pants to escape.

INT. ANTI-VENOM RESEARCH LAB – CONTINUOUS p.12

White light with a blurry, out-of-focus, dark thing suspended in air. A spider comes into focus. DR. REXY LAMBERT, arachnologist, and two lab assistants, REESE ROBBINS and CALI ANN NICHOLE are in a venom extraction process as Keaton’s call comes to Rexy to assist him in this “killer spider case”.

INT. MORGUE – DAY p.15

Keaton and Rexy must visit the CORONER to get a tissue sample from the deceased in order to identify the genus and species of the spider. This is a gross out moment. They identify similarities with the Phoneutria Feras , the most poisonous spider in the world, but also realize the venom and digestive juices are many times more toxic and corrosive.

INT. KEATON’S AUTOMOBILE – CONTINUOUS p.17

Driving. Rexy chatters away while Keaton drives. They talk about their former love lives and why they broke up. Rexy eludes to a deep dark secret, but does not divulge it to Keaton.

EXT. BOAT DOCK, PARKING LOT – DAY p.21

Keaton meets up with Rexy, who lugs a suitcase out of her vehicle and shuts the door. ATTICUS XANDERMAN, arachnologist from Brazil, mysteriously shows up and dispels any thought of killing the spider on sight, claiming the spider, while new, is a protected species. A tense-filled search produces nothing. The spider is in the clothes of the Port Supervisor. They use rope to get the body of the Port Supervisor out. His knife belt gets stuck on a ladder rung. Keaton goes back down to unhook the body, thinking the Spider is gone. The body falls on Keaton, pinning him to the floor. A head bump causes him to be in a daze. The Spider stalks him. Dread/Suspense. At the last second Rexy catches the Spider in a mechanical net. Terror.

ACT 2

INT. UNIVERSITY ENTOMOLOGY WING – DAY p.32

Walking down the HALL to the ANTI_VENOM LABORATORY Atticus references the gruesome closeup poster-sized photos of Spider faces, calling it the Hall of Horrors (Another gross out moment). We finally get to see the Spider in all its grotesque features. When Reese and Cali Ann arrive, a venom extraction is attempted and almost goes awry. Tension and terror.

INT. UNIVERSITY HORSE STABLE – DAY p.43

Rexy takes the venom to JACK(60s), the HORSE BARN manager. Atticus goes with her and learns which horse, GEORGIE, is used to produce the anti-venom. We learn that Atticus is working for CIA Operatives who want the venom but absolutely no anti-venom. Atticus is there, not to help, but to get the Spider back at all costs.

INT. REXY’S CAR – CONTINUOUS p.45

A text message from Keaton pops up on her cell phone. DINNER? The “B” story of Keaton’s love interest is furthered.

INT. RESTAURANT – NIGHT p.45

Keaton finally gets Rexy to explain why she decided to not pursue a Pathology Degree with Keaton and, instead, transferred to another college to get a degree in Entomology. Rexy reveals she is the cause of her sister’s death at the fangs of a killer spider.

EXT. COUNTRY FARM – DAY p.47

Rexy describes, with an accompanying flashback, how she had purposely aggravated a MOTHER SPIDER with a rock. When sister, DARLA, pushes Rexy back, Rexy pushes Darla onto the egg sac. A thousand baby spiders being to swarm Darla, and the Mother Spider attacks her.

INT. COUNTRY HOUSE – CONTINUOUS p.48

She runs up the stairs, into her bedroom, and cowers in the closet. Rexy froze and ran back to the house and hid in her closet. She didn’t tell her parents about the Spider’s attack until an hour later, when it was too late. Terror, horror, shock.

INT. RESTAURANT – CONTINUOUS p.48

Keaton consoles her, “You were a young child, too young to realize consequences.

EXT. RESTAURANT, VERANDA – CONTINUOUS p.49

The night is warm. String lights and large potted plants make this a romantic spot. Keaton asks for a second chance at the relationship. They kiss.

INT. ANTI-VENOM RESEARCH LAB – NIGHT p.51

Reese and Cali Ann are tasked with feeding the lab creatures, including Teras. After Reese feeds Teras, he gets interested in making out with Cali Ann and fatally forgets to put the weight back on the lid of Teras’s enclosure. Teras gets out and kills Cali Ann. Teras blinds Reese with irritating urticating hairs. These also restrict his breathing. We feel the additional terror of fighting off a deadly creature while blind. Teras finally kills Reese. In a gross out display we see Teras spray Reese with digestive juices which dissolve his face. He then plasters his head to the wall with silk.

INT. UNIVERSITY HORSE STABLE – NIGHT p.55

We see a pen light down at the end of the corridor going from one stall to the next. It’s Atticus. He uses a Brazilian bamboo poison to kill Georgie.

ACT 2 MIDPOINT

INT. ANTI-VENOM RESEARCH LAB – NIGHT p.56

We see Teras use her pedipalps to break glass. Then, in a display of raw aggressiveness and superior fighting and killing abilities, Teras takes on the other venomous creatures in the lab, starting with a spider and ending with the King Cobra. In the morning Rexy discovers Reese and Cali Ann and all of the lab creatures dead. She calls Keaton. She also hears from Jack that he has given George, the horse, an antidote which reverses the bamboo poison. Rexy is so distraught, Keaton tells her to go home while he and Atticus find the “lost” spider again. The spider escapes the lab in Rexy’s large purse.

INT. REXY’S VEHICLE – DAY p.58

Rexy drives through her residential neighborhood. Next to her is her oversized purse with Teras inside. Teras does not attack, because she is exhausted and engorged with feasting on Reese and the lab creatures from the following night. It is also day and the Phoneutria Genus of spiders primarily hunt at night.

INT. ANTI-VENOM RESEARCH LAB – MORNING p.59

HALLWAY. Atticus gets a call from the CIA Operatives and disappears. He is threatened to get the spider back.

INT. CIA HEADQUARTERS – CONTINUOUS p.63

We finally see Anon(50s), a rugged CIA operative with the demeanor of a callused Nazi, vowing to kill Atticus. We find they have hired Atticus to crossbreed spiders to create the fastest and deadliest acting venom to use in their ballistic, assassination program deemed, QUICK KILL. If the bullet doesn’t kill you the venom will. Smart Horror!

INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE ANTI-VENOM LAB – CONTINUOUS p.64

Atticus pockets his phone and goes into the lab where Keaton is consoling Rexy to go home while they look for the spider and take care of Reese’s and Cali Ann’s bodies. Rexy leaves with Teras in her purse.

EXT./INT. HORSE BARN – DAY p.65

Rexy stops at the horse barn to see Georgie has recovered. Jack gives her the first anti-venom vial. It’s not up to full anti-venom strength, but it may have some positive effect if needed.

INT. ANTI-VENOM RESEARCH LAB p.67

Keaton receives a call. Sheriff Mauer calls Keaton to tell him that he has found Atticus’s station is on the Pará River where the bamboo poison is found and close to the shipping port in Belém, where Captain Andrade’s company is based. The Sheriff found evidence of Atticus’s Dan and the bamboo poison on a glove Atticus accidentally left at the Horse Barn confirming Atticus poisoned Georgie and he is officially deemed a bad actor.

EXT./INT. REXY’S CAR – CONTINUOUS p.68

Rexy get’s in her car and starts the engine. The movement of the car, going from reverse to drive, causes the purse to shift and one of Teras’s legs comes out. Will the Spider come out and attack her while she is driving? Suspense!

EXT./INT. REXY’S HOME – CONTINUOUS p.68

Rexy swings her LARGE PURSE onto her shoulder and carries it to the front door. Tension fills the air. Will Teras attack. Not yet. Rexy puts the purse on a credenza in the entrance hall. Her daughter LILLY comes home. ROSCO, Rexy’s dog is so happy to see them and hungry for pancakes, he disregards the scent of the Spider in the purse, even though he looks at it. After pancakes, Rosco goes outside. Rexy goes upstairs and gets in the shower, and Lilly goes to her upstairs bedroom and lays down with a new video game, Donkey Kong. Lilly drifts off to sleep. The jungle sounds of the game attract Teras who climbs up on Lilly’s body and rest on her hands, still not in hunting mode. Lilly awakes and calls for her mother who is drying her hair. Suspense! Rexy finally turns off the hair dryer and hears Lilly’s pleas for help. Rexy in a bath towel tells Lilly to fling the spider off toward the door. Rexy takes a tennis racket to Teras but misses. Teras jumps on her towel. Terror! She knocks it off and Rosco engages the spider and fights with it down the stairs. Rosco gets bit, but, Rexy has anti-venom in her purse. She administers it and Rosco lives. Meanwhile Teras escapes out the back doggie door.

BACKYARD p.75

Teras climbs over the backyard gate and drops to the ground on a silk strand. She walks to the front yard where she picks up the scent of the port and the warehouse where her egg sacs are hidden among the bananas.

ACT 3

INT. KEATON’S AUTOMOBILE – CONTINUOUS p.80

Rexy and Keaton are driving toward the Port as Keaton tells Rexy that Atticus is based in the same area on the Para2 River that the bamboo poison is from and Captain Andrade’s shipping company operates out of. They finally deduce that Atticus, in a “GAIN-OF-FUNCTION” crossbreeding experiment created Teras from a Brazilian Wandering Spider and a Goliath Bird-Eating Tarantula. They also deduce that this aggressive and deadly species, if allowed to live and procreate, has the potential to create a plague which will endanger all other species and possibly humankind. SEQUEL!!!

EXT. SHIPPING PORT, U.S.A – CONTINUOUS p.81

Rexy opens the door and starts to get out. Keaton grabs two CO2 dispensers. They rush to Crutchfields Warehouse to look for Teras and any egg sacs that Teras may have left. We find that Bob Crutchfield distributed half of the bananas to the local grocery stores and didn’t inspect them throughly enough for all egg sacs. He found one and Rexy, Keaton and the Sheriff find another. Atticus and the CIA Operatives show up and, at gun point, take them, but drop them on the concrete floor when Teras shows up and threatens to attack them. The egg sacs burst open. Baby Terases swarm the CIA Operatives and Teras attacks and kills them. BOB CRUTCHFIELD grabs his homemade flamethrower and start to torch the baby Terases. Teras attacks Atticus and Keaton next. When Bob succumbs to the baby Terases, Sheriff Mauer grabs the flamethrower and torches the rest of the baby terases. Rexy tries to get the anti-venom to Keaton, but Atticus takes it and injects himself, leaving Keaton to die. Keaton tells Sheriff Mauer to shoot off the finger that Teras bit. The Sheriff complies in a gross out moment. Teras can’t get to Sheriff Mauer and attacks Rexy next. She is knocked to the floor, but manages to hold off a bite from the Spider until Keaton can knock Teras away from Rexy. Rexy then asks for the flamethrower from Sheriff Mauer and takes after Teras. Teras heads for the door, afraid of the flames, Rexy attempts to set her on fire. Only a spurt comes out and lands on the Spider’s back. Teras escapes out the door, while Rexy goes back to check on Bob. Bob goes into a seizure and dies.

EXT. DOCK – CONTINUOUS p.88

Teras limps across the dock platform in an escape, but it looks like she is still going to burn to death.

INT. ATTICUS’S VEHICLE – CONTINUOUS p.88

Atticus breathes heavily, pain down below comes in sharp pulses. Atticus, is feeling the painful cure of ED that the Phoneutria species is known for, only it is amplified. Morbid Humor.

EXT. DOCK AT OLD CARGO BOAT – CONTINUOUS p.89

Still on fire and SIZZLING, Teras drags herself to the edge of the dock and stops. She molts, leaving her burning exoskeleton behind and boards the Old Cargo Boat, the one she came in on. She climbs down into the Engine Room and up into a corner where she has laid another undiscovered, large, egg sac. We feel dread that a spider plague is about to visit the world. Set up for SEQUEL!!!

DOCK p.90

Sheriff Mauer walks toward the exoskeleton thinking it is the whole spider. He crushes it and sweeps it into the water with his foot.

EXT. RESTAURANT – NIGHT p.90

Keaton, Rexy, and Lilly exit onto a sidewalk and take a stroll. We see that they are together as a couple and potential family.

INT. GROCERY STORE – NIGHT p.91 Rexy, Keaton walk past a kiosk with bananas. They instinctively look for spiders. Seeing none, they walk past. However, as the camera stays on the bananas, we see one baby Teras spider. As another customer lifts a cluster of bananas out of the crate, we see an egg sac with another baby Teras coming out. It screeches and jumps on the Camera Lense, creating a FINAL BLACKOUT.

Jalynn’s Horror Outline Version 1

What I learned is that I had mixed up some of my cast members and their dire situations, and had to rework that. I could see it after taking out all of the extraneous info and focusing on more of an outline.

Wildcats Outline

Wildcats Concept: Fraternity brothers play a drinking game with deadly results at the ranch estate of one of them. A frat brother entices the family’s big cats to eat the evidence of a dead pledge and when the cats get loose in the house, everyone is “game” and a hidden psychopath emerges.

EXT. COUNTRY ROAD – NIGHT

Three vehicles (a BMW, Mazda Miata, Ford Explorer) carrying fraternity brothers and pledges speed down a lonely road toward a country estate under a full moon. Cole, whose family owns the ranch, is driving three fraternity brothers (Malcolm, Phillip, Creighton) in his car, plus Benji, a pledge; Ethan is driving his good friend Axel; and Gary, a pledge, has another pledge, Wesley, with him.

EXT. RANCH ESTATE – NIGHT

The cars pull up to a ranch estate. The guys get out of the cars and walk along the big cat cages that lead into their wing inside the house. The cats, a black panther, cougar and cheetah, growl. The panther puts his head against the bars, and Cole reaches out to give his head a scratch. He warns the others not to touch the cats and avoid eye contact, but Ethan tells a pledge it’s OK to pet the cougar. When Benji does, the cougar screams at him and scratches his hand with a claw before he can pull it away.

INT. LUXURIOUS RANCH HOUSE – NIGHT

Cole cleans and dresses Benji’s scratched hand. He assures the guys they’re safe around the cats if they do what he says.

The guys meet Kellie (30s), the attractive housekeeper who has made Jell-O shots for them as a welcome to the ranch.

The pledges participate in a hazing drinking game. The frat boys want to see who can drink the most Tequila the fastest and be exempt from fraternity chores for the first month. Benji and Wesley dive in. One pledge, Gary, refuses to drink and is told to leave the ranch because more drinking will ensue.

Benji, the most gung-ho of the pledges, drinks way too much, and develops severe alcohol poisoning. Benji gets very sick and goes to the bathroom to upchuck. When he comes out, he decides to go sit with the big cats to try to sober up.

INT. CAT WING OF HOUSE – NIGHT

When the cats see Benji inside their suite in the house, they get very excited and start pacing. Benji watches them for a moment before his eyes roll back in his head as he has a seizure and starts choking. Benji dies on his own vomit. The cats react wildly.

Malcolm goes looking for Benji and finds him in the cat compound. He tries to rouse Benji, but realizes that he’s dead. Malcolm calls out for the others. The guys are horrified that Benji is dead.

INT. GREAT ROOM – NIGHT

They go back to the great room and debate what to do about Benji and if they’re going to get in trouble for his death. Cole worries about what his father will say.

One of the frat bros goes back to the big cat compound where Benji’s body is, but we don’t see who, just his legs. He gets an idea and pours tequila into the cats’ water. The cats drink it and grow loud and angry. This person goes out of the cat wing and closes the door. He operates a control panel that releases them into the area where Benji is.

The panther and the cougar stride out, sniff Benji’s body, and pounce on him, tearing into his flesh. They fight each other a bit, then go back to eating the body. The third cat growls and screams.

INT. TOILET – NIGHT

Wesley, who stopped drinking long before Benji did, gets helped to the toilet by some of the guys to vomit.

Cole realizes that Ethan, Creighton and Axel have gone too far in coaxing the pledges to binge drink. He’s starting to worry that they have bigger problems than the mess Wesley is making in the bathroom with his projectile vomiting.

INT. CAT WING – NIGHT

When Cole sees that the cats are loose, he freaks and tries to get the cats back into their cages, but they’ve developed a taste for human flesh and go after him. Cole escapes, but so do the big cats. The frat brothers are running through the house, trying to get away from them.

INT. KITCHEN – NIGHT

The cougar walks into the kitchen where two frat brothers Ethan and Axel are trying to find weapons. They grab knives. The cougar leaps up on the kitchen island and growls at them, pacing around it. Ethan throws his knife at the cat, but it bounces off. He turns and runs. The cat screams and lunges for Axel who can’t get away in time and mauls him. Cole runs into the kitchen and talks the cougar down with a broom, too late to save Axel’s life. The cougar runs off while Cole tries to help Axel.

INT. 2^ND FLOOR HALLWAY OVERLOOKING GREAT ROOM – NIGHT

The cougar runs down a hallway on the second floor. He sees one of the boys, Creighton, and chases him. The frat boy climbs up on the railing of the overlook down into the great room. He sees a large light fixture and jumps for it. The cat stands up on the railing and makes ready to jump after him. The boy lets go as the fixture starts to come loose from the ceiling and falls onto a couch. The cougar jumps to the light fixture. The boy leaps off the couch and runs as the whole fixture falls with the cat to the floor.

INT. CLOSET – NIGHT

Ethan is hiding in a closet. The panther approaches and smells him. He sniffs all around the door. Finally, he rakes his claws down the door trying to open it.

Ethan is holding onto the door handle like his life depends on it. He manages to keep the door closed until the panther gets distracted and moves on.

INT. STUDY – NIGHT

Ethan finds Cole and tells him he needs to get guns and kill these cats before they kill the frat brothers. Cole is conflicted, but was thinking the same thing. These are family pets in his mind, but he realizes there’s no other choice.

Cole goes into his father’s study with Ethan behind him. Cole pulls a rifle out of a gun case and grabs a holster with a pistol. Ethan picks a pistol and a sword off the wall. They load the guns with ammo.

INT. KELLIE’S ROOM – NIGHT

Kellie turns off the TV and takes her ear buds out and puts them on the side table of her bed. She lies back to go to sleep, but is frightened by a scratching at her door. She looks down at the light under the door and sees a big black paw raking the carpet under the door. She looks at the door handle? Is it latched? Before she can get out of bed, the panther throws his weight against the door and pushes it open. Kellie stifles a scream as the panther sees her and jumps up on the bed straddling her and pinning her down with fear.

Cole sees the panther going into her room and races down the hall to her. He picks up a desk chair and pushes the cat off the bed and into her bathroom and closes the door. Kellie shrieks in relief, as Cole holds her and apologizes.

INT. KELLIE’S BATHROOM – NIGHT

The panther in Kellie’s bathroom breaks through a window and gets outdoors on a section of roof.

EXT. ROOF – NIGHT

The big cat walks around to a balcony, jumps onto it, and paws open a sliding glass door that’s ajar. He listens to the screams inside the house and trots off.

INT. INDOOR POOL – NIGHT

Another frat brother, Phillip, is hiding in the huge pool room. The panther walks in and sees Phillip at the end of the pool in the dim light. Phillip starts to get into the water, but the panther jumps into the end of the pool and swims toward him. Phillip grabs the pool skimmer pole and runs down a side trying to push the panther away but it’s relentless in stalking Phillip. He manages to put the skimmer net over the panther’s head and distract it long enough to escape.

INT. SECOND FLOOR HALLWAY – NIGHT

Malcolm on the second floor has found a whip and when he turns a corner trying to find the others, he runs into the cougar. He cracks the whip and spooks the cat for a few moments.

Malcolm thinks he has the upper hand and tries to back away, but the cat follows him. He cracks the whip again, but this time the cat keeps coming at him. Malcolm gets to the stairway leading downstairs and runs down to a landing then trips and tumbles down the rest of the steps. The cougar follows after him and the panther pounces on him when he gets to the bottom. He screams hoping help will come.

Cole and Ethan are looking for the cats with their guns ready. The panther is chewing on Malcolm who is being eaten alive. When the cougar sees Cole, he leaps for him. Cole tries to react quickly enough to get a shot off. But the cougar is on him before he can.

Ethan takes the sword and rams it into the cougar’s side. The cat screams and runs off. Ethan helps Cole up as the panther now comes at them.

INT. GARY’S CAR – NIGHT

Gary, the pledge who wouldn’t drink, doesn’t feel right about leaving the ranch. He turns his car around and drives back. He parks the car and walks in through the front door when he hears screaming.

EXT. RANCH HOUSE – NIGHT

Gary gets out of his car and hears screaming. He runs to the front door and opens it to see the panther chewing on Malcolm and shouts then turns and runs leaving the door wide open.

He scrambles up on the wired and barred cat enclosure and watches the panther as it runs out the door looking for him.

Cole yells for everyone to get out of the house if they can. Ethan runs off.

INT. CAT WING – NIGHT

Ethan heads for the cat wing to see what’s left of Benji. To his chagrin, there’s still a lot of pieces left. Then he notices the cheetah is missing. Where did it go?

EXT. CAT ENCLOSURE – NIGHT

The cheetah is moving through a caged enclosure that takes it from inside the house in the cat wing to the outdoor enclosure. When it reaches the outdoors, it sees Gary sitting on top of its enclosure watching for the panther.

The cheetah runs toward Gary and jumps up in the air trying to get a bite of him. This scares Gary into falling off of the enclosure. He gets up.

INT. HOUSE – NIGHT

Cole goes back in for Kellie and anyone else who’s still alive and pulls her out. She tells him she’s called 9-1-1 and his father. He sees Phillip and together they get Kellie into Cole’s Explorer.

EXT. RANCH HOUSE – NIGHT

He sees Gary and tells him to get back inside his car. Then Cole goes back in for anyone else he can find.

INT. COLE’S EXPLORER – NIGHT

Kellie watches as Ethan runs toward his BMW.

Ethan is walking around to the driver’s seat of his car. That’s the moment the panther jumps on top of the car, staring Ethan down.

Ethan backs away and bumps into Cole’s Explorer. He yells to Kellie to unlock the doors so he can get inside. Kellie scrambles to unlock the doors, but not before the panther jumps on Ethan and starts shredding him. The cat takes part of Ethan’s leg.

A badly mauled Malcolm rises up from the back seat floorboard of Cole’s Explorer scaring Kellie out of her wits and telling Kellie not to open the car.

Kellie pushes him away telling Malcolm they’ve got to help the others. He’s almost out of his mind with fear and prevents Kellie from opening the doors for Ethan.

Gary tries to help Ethan, but is attacked by the cougar who bites his head off. This attracts the panther. Ethan now has a chance to get into his BMW.

INT. GUEST BEDROOM – NIGHT

Wesley is passed out on a guest bed after drinking so much. Cole finds him and carries him out with the rifle slung across his back. He stops to rest near the front door and yells for anyone else inside to help him. Creighton steps out of the library and grabs Wesley under one arm as Cole takes the other. They look towards the front door to see the cougar standing there eyeing them.

Cole tells Creighton to carry Wesley while he reaches for the rifle. The cougar charges them and all Cole can do is whip the rifle butt around and hit the cougar in the head. It gets a paw on him and rakes his chest. Cole pulls a pistol out of his holster and shoots the cougar who bounds away.

EXT. RANCH HOUSE – NIGHT

Cole and Creighton get Wesley outside and face the panther. When the panther turns on Cole, he has to shoot it with his pistol several times to kill it.

Finally, his beloved panther is dead and the cougar appears and tears into the dead panther, then sees Cole and takes a last run at him. Cole puts bullets into his pistol just in the nick of time to shoot the cougar in the head. It falls inches from him and reaches a paw out to him with a sad cry. Cole cries over their deaths and this whole fiasco.

First responders arrive and gather up the dead and wounded. They wrap Ethan’s leg and wounds on his face. He’s lost a lot of blood and they don’t expect him to survive.

INT. CAT WING – NIGHT

Cole goes back to the indoor cat cages. He sees that the cheetah’s cage has been opened by someone, and the cat is gone.

EXT. RANCH HOUSE – NIGHT

A paramedic shuts the door to an ambulance. Flashing red, white and blue lights signal the ambulance is moving.

INT. AMBULANCE – NIGHT

Ethan is lying on a gurney. His eyes open in his bloody, bandaged face and he smiles.

MIke’s Horror Outline Version 1

What I learned is the importance of sketching out each scene as it drives the story.

ACT 1: SET UP FOR HORROR

INT- SCHOOL BUILDING- DAY

Emily is walking in a hallway, not quite sure where to go. She walks into a classroom. Everyone turns around and looks at her. The professor at the front of the room asks her name. She tells him, and he responds that it’s good she finally showed up. There’s a big test.

He motions for her to sit down. He hands her a paper and tells her she has a half hour to finish the three hour final. The professor puts the test on her desk. She picks it up and looks at it. There are pages and pages of questions. She looks down and realizes she is in her underwear. The other students start turning in their papers and stare at her as he leaves the room. We hear the dings of texts coming in.

INT- EMILY’S ROOM- DAY

Emily is in her bed. We hear another ding. She awakes with a start, and picks up her phone.

We look at the screen of the phone and see texts from Brad. He tells her some people are getting together at a local coffee shop. She responds that she must have fallen asleep and she’ll be right there. Brad tells her to hurry. David will be there as well.

Emily gets up and starts to get ready.

EXT- THE COFFEE SHOP- DUSK

A car pulls up and Emily gets out. Emily walks toward the front entrance.

INT- COFFEE SHOP, INTERIOR- DUSK

Emily walks in the door. She walks toward a table. Heather, Brad, Madison, David, and Jacob greet her.

Emily shares her dream with them. It is a recurring one. Others have dreams just like it. Heather shares a story about an abandoned classroom building where people have disappeared. There was a fire years ago during a test when someone tried to set off a fire alarm to get out of the test. Instead they accidentally started a fire. The building was locked down, and they all died in the fire, although legend says the professor got away. Others have heard the story. Heather suggests they all go to check out the old building. Jacob and Brad have their doubts, but Emily, David and Madison are in. They think it is a joke.

EXT- OLD CLASSROOM BUILDING- EVENING

They are all standing outside of the building. Emily and David start to feel a little creeped out. Brad tries to talk the group into leaving and going somewhere else. Jacob complains about how cold and dark it is. It seems like the group is getting to leave. Heather yells and calls them cowards. Then she opens the door and walks in, holding it open. David shrugs his shoulders and follows. Emily and Madison walk in at the same time, bumping into each other. Jacob yells at them to come on out, and then walks in to get them. Jacob, seeing that he’s alone, runs in. The door shuts, and we hear the lock click.

INT- OLD CLASSROOM BUILDING ENTRANCE AREA- EVENING

There is low light. Brad starts yelling for people to follow him and get out. He tries the door, and it’s locked. Jacob tells Brad to cut it out and tries the door himself. Both run to windows, but they are locked shut. They start pounding on the windows, but nothing budges. Emily pulls out a cell phone, but there is no signal. Jacob can’t get a signal either. He starts freaking out, demanding that the others quit fooling around.

Heather finds the whole thing amusing. She laughs like it’s a game. She urges the others to go explore. Emily tries to get her to focus on the problem at hand. Brad pulls everyone together and suggests they split up and try to find a way out. He moves in one direction, Emily goes in another and Heather follows Emily. David splits off and Madison follows, leaving Jacob by himself. Jacob starts yelling and banging on the front door.

INT- HALLWAY- EVENING

Heather and Emily are trying to find a way out. They hear Jacob yelling and start laughing. They know that Jacob would be long gone if he actually found a way out. They start strategizing to find an exit. The conversation then goes to a crush that Emily has on David. They hear movement in a nearby classroom.

Emily looks in and gasps. Her eyes tear up and she runs off. Heather looks into the room and sees David and Madison making out. She runs after Emily.

ACT 2- THE POINT OF NO RETURN

INT- DIFFERENT HALLWAY- EVENING

Brad is looking around. He tries a door that is locked. A shadow goes by and he looks up. Nothing. He hears running footsteps and turns a corner. Heather runs right into him, almost knocking him over.

A voice comes over the intercom telling everyone to go to Room 313 for their exam. They look up at the intercom.

They hear Jacob off to the distance yelling that there’s no way he’s taking a test and to let him out. He starts yelling hysterically. Brad and Heather start following his voice. They find him in a classroom hunched over and weeping. Heather tries to comfort him.

A monitor comes on, and they see David in a room with a frightened look on his face. The voice comes on and tells them that David will die if they don’t answer the first question. Again they are told to go to Room 313 for the exam.

INT- ROOM 313- EVENING

Brad, Emily, and Jacob walk into the room. The monitor comes on, and we see David again, still frightened. There are two glasses in front of him. A voice comes on and tells them to handcuff themselves to the desks. Brad refuses and demands that David be let go. A knife comes out and is held to David’s throat. The order is repeated. Jacob starts to run, and Brad tackles him, pulls him to the desk, and puts on the cuffs. The voice orders Heather to put the cuffs on Brad. She complies and Brad lets her. She then cuffs herself to another desk.

The voice tells them that one glass contains water and the other contains poison. One is marked A and the other is marked B. The question is asked, and the group answers A. With a shaky hand, David picks up the glass and drinks it. He puts is down, and a weak smile comes across his face. A rope appears around his neck, and the screen goes blank.

The group starts to talk about how they are going to get out of this mess when the door opens and David appears looking fine. He takes a couple of steps and falls over. Dead.

The group starts to speculate. Where’s Madison/ Where’s Emily? Are one of them behind it? Then the screen comes on. We see Madison’s face, horrified.

INT- ANOTHER ROOM- EVENING

She has a noose around her neck. We see the end of a camera pointed toward her. Madison is standing on a red chair with a blue chair next to it. The group is asked another question, one answer is red and the other is blue. The question is answered, and Madison steps onto the red chair. We see a hand pull a lever and a trapdoor opens under the chair. Madison swings from the noose.

ACT 3: FULL ON HORROR

INT- ROOM 313- EVENING

The three people are terrified. Jacob suggests it could be Emily. Heather mentions that Emily had a crush on David and Saw David and Madison making out. Brad is skeptical. Then Emily appears at the door, a scary look on her face. Behind her is a man with a mask with a speargun in his hand. He orders Emily to sit at a desk and cuffs her. He uncuffs Jacob and takes him away, whining and whimpering.

Brad and Heather start asking Emily questions. She had run and been locked in c closet and couldn’t get out. The man in the mask opened the door, held the speargun to her and told her he was taking her to her friends. He told her it was exam time.

The monitor comes back on. Jacob is in a compromising position [I haven’t figured this one out yet] A problem is posed. After some tense moments, Emily asks for some scarp paper and the masked man comes in and hands her some along with a pen. Emily works out the problem and answers correctly.

A voice comes on and congratulates Emily telling her that she has earned the right to be the next victim.

INT- ANOTHER ROOM- EVENING

A relieved Jacob is taken out of the trap. He asks where he is being taken and is told he’ll go back with his friends. He begs to be let go and is told he will be given an extra credit question he could answer to be let go if he chooses. He accepts it. He He is asked a question and is given two guns, one loaded and one not. He picks up the gun corresponding to his answer and puts it to his head. We hear a couple of clicks. It’s empty. He starts laughing. He picks up the other gun and points it toward the masked man. Again two clicks. Jacob is confused.

The masked man tells him both answers were correct, but since he cheated, he would have to face the consequences. He fires the spear gun and kills Jacob. He picks up the gun and puts in some bullets.

INT- ROOM 313

The three survivors are in the room, and they hear footsteps coming down the hall. Emily writes furiously and crumples up the paper.She puts it in her mouth as the masked man walks in. He holds the gun to Emily’s head and uncuffs her. She leans down and kisses Brad. For good luck she says.

After the masked man walks out Brad pulls the paper out and reads it. The monitor comes on with Emily in a precarious position. The masked man starts to talk and Brad interrupts saying he would raise his hand if he could but he has a question. The monitor goes off.

We hear footsteps and the masked man enters the room. Brad asks for a review. The masked man goes up to the board at the front and starts lecturing. Brad then asks if he could try a practice problem. The masked man writes down a problem and takes him to the board. Brad starts on the problem and seems to get stuck at a point. The masked man is frustrated and grabs the chalk from Brad and starts to write. Brad grabs the man and pushes him out a window.

EXT- OUTSIDE THE BUILDING (THROUGH THE WINDOW)- EVENING

We see the masked man motionless on the pavement.

EXT- THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING-EVENING

Brad, Heather, and Emily are being led out of the building. They see a body bag, probably Jacob, belong put into the ambulance. Emily looks back toward the spot where the masked man fell. It is empty.

What I learned: The exercises really do build on each other and make sense. Seems like a no-brainer, but it’s helping me out quite well.

Heads up: It’s 9 pages, but it is my best version yet.

ACT 1

EXT. DAY – ABANDONED ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Estrella is peering through a window and sees the Doctor performing a morbid surgery; grafting animal parts to a living human.

The patient opens her eyes. She does not scream and is not afraid. She touches her tongue to her new fangs. Zoom out to see a tangle of snakes gnarled and swirling atop her head.

The patient looks Estrella straight in the eye. Estrella runs into the woods and falls into a discretely disguised pit.

EXT. DAY – WOODS

Five twenty-something friends, a transient band of misfits, are walking through the woods. Ryan spots a chain link fence, runs, and jumps it. He signals for the others to do the same.

Pip assesses the situation, decides it’s safe, and weaves their fingers together to create a foothold for the others. Pip’s partner Zinnia is first up. Will complains that it is a bad idea, and why do they have to do everything Ryan and Pip want.

Ryan makes a joke, tells Will he doesn’t have to come. Will ultimately decides to follow. Olly looks back, indicating his reluctance. He makes eye contact with Pip who drops their hands and both launch themselves over at the same time.

The group has a way of interacting together, seamlessly and with few words, which lets the audience know they have been traveling together for a while. There is a real, “Stand By Me” vibe about this crew.

The quintet keeps walking, chatting along the way. Zinnia hears Estrella’s whimpering and signals for everyone to be quiet. She follows the noise while the others proceed cautiously behind her. Ryan licks his finger and puts it into the wind, joking, “Yes, this is the way.”

The group extracts Estrella from the hole. Pip questions her, but she is shaking, rocking, unresponsive, mumbling to herself. Zinnia says they need to find her help. Will is against anything to do with this stranger.

Storm clouds roll in and force them towards a building they can see close by. Strange birds scream in the distance, like nothing any of them have ever heard.

Pip, noting concern in the group, lets everyone know it is just ravens. Will isn’t buying it. Ryan looks up and points to the birds circling high above their heads, “Looks like ravens to me.” Zinnia doesn’t care what they are, they need to get this woman inside ASAP.

Thunder and lightning, pouring down rain; the group is already soaked. Pip knocks. No answer. They try the door. Locked. Meanwhile, Olly has broken a window. Ryan jokes, “My hero.”

INT. CONTINUOUS – ABANDONED ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The group enters. They discuss theories of the property being abandoned. The floor descends below them, delivering them to the basement.

Estrella is more lucid now and says, “We shouldn’t be here.”

Ryan takes her by the hand and leads her to one of the tunnels, “Over here better?”

Olly goes to a different tunnel to scope it out. Will follows him, enraged, “None of this would have happened if you hadn’t broken that window.”

Zinnia shudders and follows Pip to the third and final tunnel entrance. Pip is optimistic, telling the others it is a puzzle to be solved, they can figure it out together.

Bars fall, enclosing each pair in their respective tunnels.

Estrella loses it and falls to the ground hugging her knees, sobbing. Ryan tries to comfort her by making a joke. Will is still yelling at Olly. Zinnia looks at Pip who gives a sharp whistle that gets everyone’s attention.

His instructions: Solve the puzzle in pairs and meet each other outside, at the broken window. There is resistance from Will and Estrella, but Zinnia soothes them and convinces them to soldier on.

INT. SAME – CONTROL ROOM

The Doctor wakes the Siren, tells Medusa to bring him Estrella and Ryan, and lets the Kamaitachi loose.

One tunnel leads to sand, another to water, another to the operating room. All of the groups will be pursued, mentally and physically tortured.

INT. LATER – CAVE LEDGE

Zinnia and Pip find themselves on a ledge at the end of their tunnel. They can see a pool of water below.

“How deep do you think it is?” Zinnia wonders. “It’s our only exit,” Pip says just before he jumps in.

He looks up at Zinnia, “I didn’t even hit bottom.” The water looks clean and clear, lit from below. Zinnia jumps in.

Enter the SIREN and their fight to survive.

INT. SAME – SAND PIT

Will and Olly find their tunnel ending in ever more sand until they are atop a pile of it.

“Look at these cute little prints,” Will says. Something skitters on their periphery. Olly is silent. Will is panicked, he can’t stop talking.

Olly scouts a ladder on the wall and makes his way there. Will is beside himself, and doesn’t notice what Olly is doing. The Kamaitachi bursts through the sand and cuts him limb from limb.

Olly escapes to the sound of Will’s screams.

INT. SAME – TUNNEL

Ryan hugs the weeping Estrella to his side, encouraging her forward. They see the woman from earlier, Medusa with her snakes covered up.

Estrella freezes, she will not take another step. Ryan is attracted to Medusa and wants to see her in bed with him. She is charming and lures him closer. She wants to show him something. She promises nothing will happen to Estrella.

ACT 2 – THE POINT OF NO RETURN

INT. LATER – OPERATING ROOM

Ryan and Estrella are tricked into the operating room, deceived by Medusa.

Medusa tells Ryan to lie on the table. He does so, believing it has to do with her kink. Estrella is shaking her head. “You want her to watch?” he asks.

Once Ryan is strapped in, Medusa takes a straight jacket to Estrella, who resists.

INT. SAME – POOL OF WATER

Pip and Zinnia are trapped in water with the SIREN. They volley with her sharp claws, teeth, and ear-piercing screams until they figure it out – she breathes air! They drown her.

INT. SAME – SAND PIT

Will is dead. Only Olly knows this. He makes haste climbing the ladder ever higher.

INT. SAME – OUTSIDE O.R.

We see more of the Doctor, as he preps to operate on Ryan. reveal the entirety of the Doctor’s face while scrubbing in.

INT. CONTINUOUS – O.R.

The Doctor enters. Medusa is the Doctor’s assistant. Ryan understands what is happening now. They begin the process of anesthetizing him.

Estrella is screaming. Medusa suggests switching her out for Ryan. The Doctor explains the importance of having a healthy specimen for the surgery to have the greatest chance of success.

INT. SAME – POOL OF WATER

Pip and Zinnia have killed the Siren. They hug and kiss in victory. A whirlpool forms and drains them through different exits.

INT. LATER – LADDER

Olly is climbing the ladder to where it ends on the roof.

INT. SAME – DRAINAGE TUNNEL ONE

Zinnia follows the sound of Estrella’s wailing.

INT. SAME – DRAINAGE TUNNEL TWO

Pip navigates the maze from where he exited the drain.

INT. LATER – O.R.

Estrella is hysterical. The Doctor is calm. He speaks to her softly as he operates on Ryan. The Doctor uses his powers of persuasion and hypnotism to soothe Estrella, and she relaxes.

EXT. LATER – ROOF OF THE BUILDING

Olly paces the roof muttering to himself, clearly distraught over his decision to abandon Will.

The Doctor flies onto the roof and lands just in front of Olly, stunned. The Doctor waits patiently for Olly to make the first move.

Olly steps backwards slowly and keeps going. The Doctor warns him.

Olly falls off the roof.

He hits the ground, but isn’t dead. Dozens of harpies swoop in and pick him apart.

MIDPOINT – THE MONSTER IS WORSE THAN WE THOUGHT

INT. CONTINUOUS – DRAINAGE TUNNEL ONE

Zinnia hears Olly screaming. She calls out to Estrella, who replies back. Zinnia follows the sound of her voice.

INT. SAME – DRAINAGE TUNNEL TWO

Pip hears Olly’s cries, but can’t find their way to him. Instead Pip finds a door labeled, “Recovery.” He opens it.

Ryan is here. His head is bandaged.

INT. CONTINUOUS – O.R.

Zinnia finds Estrella in the operating room, still straight-jacketed. She releases her and the two run through the maze searching for an exit. They call out to Pip and Ryan.

ACT 3 – FULL OUT HORROR

INT. NIGHT – ISOLATED CHAMBER

The room is lit by the moon from a skylight overhead. It is an old classroom with writing desks, chalkboard, etc.

Pip and Ryan enter the room from different ingress points than do Zinnia and Estrella. Zinnia wields a scalpel defensively, sheltering Estrella behind her. Pip is ready with fists out. Ryan removes his bandages to reveal the new goat-like appendages grafted to his skull.

There is a momentary pause as they recognize each other, then run towards one another to embrace as a group.

The sound of metal scraping on concrete halts their celebration. On another end of the room a gate is opening. The growls of three distinctly different dogs can be heard.

Pip searches for an actual weapon and dislodges the lid from a desk. The four work their backs towards their only chance of escape, another door across the room.

Cerberus launches into the room. One head catches a hit from the desk shield. Another, a slash from the scalpel. Ryan and Estrella are essentially helpless, sheltered behind Pip and Zinnia.

They make it to their exit and attempt to close it before Cerberus can make it through. The three-headed beast gets Pip by the leg and drags them back to the other side. Pip continues beating Cerberus with the desktop shield, but they are being ripped to shreds.

It’s already too late for anyone to act on his behalf. Cerberus lunges for the door just as the last three are able to close it. The beast claws and thrashes itself against the barrier, trying to get to its prey.

INT. NIGHT – LAST ROOM BEFORE EXIT

The group walks cautiously backwards until Ryan catches the edge of the landing, teeters for a moment and catches himself. They are able to see by the tiny light of a broken window, this is the room where all of them originally entered.

The platform of their descent is still in the basement. They must hug the walls and walk along the last ledge of flooring to make it back to the window.

Cerberus continues clawing and thrashing at the door, until it breaks through! The three-headed dog falls into the open floor.

EXT. NIGHT – JUST OUTSIDE

Zinnia, Estrella, and Ryan exit through the window. Harpies scream, swooping down, pecking and clawing at them as the three run towards the woods.

The Doctor, still on the roof, takes flight. He swoops down and slashes Zinnia’s throat in one swift motion. She falls to the ground, bleeds out quickly. Estrella doesn’t stop. She dodges her previous pit-fall and makes it to the fence.

Ryan gives up, stands stupefied. The doctor speaks to him in soothing tones, convincing him to return to the compound. Ryan walks back towards the building.

Estrella jumps the fence and escapes.

Man you guys are kicking butt. I’m having trouble committing to outline scenes. It was easy when we were vague but now I’m shifting things here and there but they never seem good enough. I don’t want to get too far in with temp scenes that I just have to redo again. :/

What I learned from this assignment was that all the previous assignments were very cleverly designed to generate the required ingredients to make this process really fruitful.

MOTHERLAND

EXT – GNARLY TREE/ISOLATED FARMHOUSE – NIGHT

The leaves of an ancient, gnarled tree atop a rocky outcrop on an isolated farm shiver as the last sunlight of the day is crushed below the horizon by menacing clouds of night: we follow the sugars of photosynthesis inside the tree down to its roots which will exude them into the darkness of the dirt. A twisted root swells and splits off a piece of the rock it’s penetrated – this snaps, falls to the bottom of the outcrop, and smashes into the skull of a fox that was eating the entrails of its prey. As the fox spasms in death, something we can’t quite make out in the darkness drags the fox to its underground lair, where it disappears just as car headlights beam sweeps past, headed along the track to the isolated farmhouse…

…Inside the expensive car, Jan and Michael notice something strange about the way the fox disappears – too quickly. Michael quips he can relate to a crazy urge to hide: from Jan’s crazy family on their crazy farm… she smiles.

INT – FARMOUSE – NIGHT

Jan and Michael join the family to celebrate patriarch father Jeb’s 70th birthday along with his two other daughters Leah, Beth and her partner Jack. Leah, the youngest, is a veterinarian who has never really left the farm. Rebel permaculture hippy Beth is heavily pregnant – only recently moving back along with itinerant musician partner Jack to birth the baby somewhere safe. Elder sister Jan believes her academic farming credentials qualify her to run the farm better than her father, and lab-based seed geneticist Michael agrees. Beth reminds everyone Jan believed she was better qualified long before she went to college – Beth protests she’s not a cow as Leah listens to Beth’s bump with a stethoscope – family fun, teasing, frivolity – daughters have each prepared a dish for the birthday feast: Beth vegetarian, Leah meat, Jan a sugary meringue birthday cake with sparklers and fireworks.

Jeb announces that he’s selling the farm – it can’t make money – the ever increasing inputs of fertilizer and agrochemicals required cost too much – the debt unserviceable – time to get out. His daughters are stunned – it’s their living birth right as much as their birthplace. The family dog senses the atmosphere and sides with the daughters – starts barking as if possessed, making talk impossible…

EXT – GNARLY TREE – NIGHT

… The Gnarly Tree hears the dog barking from a distance – there is no wind, but its leaves suddenly rustle vigorously. They stop. Still no wind. The leaves rustle again, more insistently and the wind begins to blow and build up into a storm…

INT – FARMOUSE – NIGHT

… Leah senses something beyond the barking: she calms the dog and her and Jeb hear a distant cow in trouble…

INT – FARM SHED – NIGHT

Leah and Jeb help a cow struggling with a difficult labour…

INT – JAN’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

… Jan is insisting Michael has sex with her – The App has determined she’s optimally fertile tonight – Michael is tired but reluctantly tries to comply…

INT – BETH’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

… Jack listens to Jan and Michael through the wall as Beth sleeps…

EXT – GNARLY TREE – NIGHT

… the storm is now screaming through the branches of the gnarly tree, explosive thunder…

INT – FARM SHED – NIGHT

… Finally, Leah pulls the calf from the cow…

INT – BETH’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

… Lightning flashes as Beth jolts up, roaring as she’s woken by a huge contraction…

… the gnarled tree is blown over, to reveal a skeleton rising up out of the ground entwined in the bolus of its roots, and permeated by a mycelial web – torrential rain blasts its bones clean…

INT – BETH’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

… Beth’s OK – another contraction but it’s just Brackston Hicks…

INT – FARM SHED – NIGHT

… the calf is horrifically deformed – and it has no eyes – Jeb drags its body out of the pen as Leah tries to save its dying mother – but Jeb sees the mother’s beyond help, returns with the captive bolt to put her out of her misery. Leah surprises herself how emotionally reluctant she is to give up on the mother, and Jeb acknowledge some history between Leah and himself over this before, with her tacit consent, he kills the cow.

EXT – FARMHOUSE – DAY

A postman hurries through torrential rain biblical Noah would recognise – he posts a letter through the door.

INT – FARMHOUSE – DAY

The family are arguing over the future of the farm – Jan says it’s failing but it could succeed with more hi-tech, chemically intensive farming done right, Beth the organic opposite – when Leah opens the letter addressed to their mother who’s been dead for thirty years: it’s a nest egg fund their mother had invested a small sum in and it’s about to mature on what would be her imminent 65th birthday – it’s a farm-saving amount they can claim! All Jeb has to do is provide Mother’s death certificate and Will.. but Jeb refuses to consider this – this is not financial for him: he didn’t know about this nest egg – it’s emotional – it’s as if Mother has suddenly come back from the dead – he snatches the nest egg letter and storms out into the rain…

EXT – FARM – DAY

…so heavy now that streams are coursing over the track to the farm, but Jeb wades through them until he can go no further – he stands knee deep in a torrent and roars with fear and frustration –

…the leaves, then the skeleton hears Jeb’s roar…

EXT – FARM – DAY

– a landslide crevasse opens up underneath roaring Jeb – he falls into it, but as he slides down a root catches his jaw, breaking his fall and his neck – the root seems to tighten, pressing Jeb’s throat against the side of the crevasses – starting to asphyxiate him! The water level is rising as the family catch up with Jeb and work to extract him from the crevasse before he suffocates. Leah and Jack wade in, taking Jeb’s weight off the root as Jack cuts through it with his knife. As they drag limp and unconscious Jeb out of the crevasse and take him into the house, Jan and Michael’s car is swallowed into crevasse clearly making the track impassable for vehicles. They don’t see the two ends of the root Jack cut suddenly withdraw themselves back into the dirt!

INT – FARMHOUSE – DAY

The family lay Jeb on a couch near the fire to dry out. Leah attends – Jeb’s unconscious and maybe paralysed, but he’s breathing, stable, alive… how will they get help? Power is down. Nobody has mobile signal, Michael confirms the landline is down, and Jack points out that the off road farm vehicles all too heavy to risk driving over the flooded unstable ground. They’re cut off from the world. What to do? Leah knows the detail of the land best – leaving Beth to tend to Jeb, Leah goes to scout (on foot with the dog) a possible safe root for a farm tractor to get help. Michael volunteers to try and find where the landline’s gone down and fix it. Jan and Jack go into Jeb’s office to look for Mother documents that might release the nest egg and explain Jeb’s mysterious over-reaction to it.

While they’re searching, Jack asks Jan if The App is working for her? Confides he heard her and Michael in bed last night – walls are so thin it was like he was lying next to her… She confides that they were “interrupted” by everything… but she’s still fertile, still “on heat”, and it would be a shame to waste the opportunity – Jack agrees she’s still hot and kisses her passionately, Jan pulls away: Beth’s too close – she’d hear…

Michael discovers the land line is beyond repair.

Leah discovers the skeleton and calmly silences the barking dog that lead her to it. She examines the skeleton closely with a professional eye: it looks complete – no signs of obvious cause of death. She sees the distinctive ring still hanging loosely around one of its fingers. The dawning possibility that this is her mother and the questions that raises…

INT – FARMHOUSE – DAY

In the paperwork Jan and Jack have unearthed in Jeb’s office, Leah finds an old photo of her mother wearing the distinctive ring as Jack comes back in from the barn. Leah reports she hasn’t found a safe vehicle route. She’s scrutinising the ring in the photo when Jan comes in and asks about the extent of the havoc wreaked on the farm. Leah says it’s mostly flooding, some broken branches but only one tree down – Jan can see her sister’s hiding something and probes further – Leah confirms the fallen tree’s Old Gnarly as she puts the photo down and goes to Jeb. Jan scrutinizes this photo that interested evasive Leah so much…

Leah sees that Jeb’s breathing has become more laboured and hears the dog growling at something under his couch. Leah discovers mould has mysteriously appeared in Jeb’s bedding – spores may be damaging Jeb’s lungs – Leah notices the same mould has appeared on the nest-egg letter Jeb stuffed inside his pocket – Dog barks at something under Jeb’s couch – Jack discovers and closely examines distinctive, unfamiliar mushrooms are growing through the floorboards – publicly everyone works hard to put it down to a leak in the roof caused by the storm.

EXT – FARM CHEMICAL STORE – DAY

Inside the hi-tech hub/store Michael searches the chemical drums and finds a highly toxic fungicide – he takes a drum back to the house.

INT – FARMHOUSE – DAY

Jack is examining the fungus closely, fascinated, he hides some away for a closer look before Michael douses the fungus and surrounding floorboards with neat fungicide. Beth replaces Jeb’s covers with fresh.

EXT – GNARLY TREE – DAY

Jan finds the skeleton, goes to take her mother’s ring – as she touches it the leaves flutter and rustle – Jan hesitates, senses malice, but then continues to remove the ring and heads back to the farmhouse (Jan is too focussed on the ring to notice what we see: the same fungus as in the house has appeared growing on/in the tree near the skeleton since Leah was there)

INT – FARMHOUSE – DAY

Jeb’s breathing has deteriorated so much Leah decides they have to get help immediately. Jack volunteers to walk miles to the nearest doctor, and Michael says he’ll accompany him. Jan re-examines the nest egg letter for any clues about Mother and sees that it is now riddled with mould – she hears Jeb’s laboured breathing – Jan completely re-evaluates the nest egg money – it is not a kind gift, it is malicious – Mother has come back to make mischief – for revenge! Jan puts the letter down and obsessively rinses her hands in the toxic fungicide.

EXT – GNARLY TREE – DAY

Jack and Michael pass by the Gnarly tree but don’t see the skeleton as they leave the farm to take a shortcut through a wood. The skeleton sees Michael petulantly kick some of the distinctive fungus growing nearby – some of the same fungus now growing inside the skeleton slowly opens its gills to release spores…

EXT – WILD FOREST – DAY

Michael confronts Jack for having sex with Jan and threatens to reveal it and jeopardise Jack’s relationship to Beth and his share of the farm. Jack dismisses impotent Michael with contempt, and Michael attacks him. But bleeding Jack is only hurt enough to get mad and chases terrified Michael through a forest. Jack is overtaken by what looks like a root unearthing itself like a snake wriggling under fallen leaves to catch up with sprinting Michael: Jack sees the root surface to trip up Michael who flies though the air, smashes his head on a rock, and falls face down in a pool of storm water….

Jack knows what he saw but can’t understand it – he lifts the root beside him from under the leaves and confirms it’s freshly uprooted itself. As he puts it down it seems to retighten itself to the ground – Jack sees the dense fungal mycelium matt of embracing fibres the root is bedding itself back into. He hears Michael choking in the water, but as he goes to help him leaves of the forest floor start rippling as they move towards him from various directions. Jack abandons Michael (who drowns) as he runs for his life – he leaps over the tracks of the subterranean roots as they catch up with him, but they can swiftly change direction and there are more and more of them coming – a three-way root pincer movement almost gets him as he propels himself out of the wood into a grassy field near the farmhouse – the grass moves towards him in waves as he sprints back to the house…

INT – FARMHOUSE – DAY

… Jack bursts into the farmhouse in terror and tells what’s happened – Beth is terrified, believes bleeding Jack’s story; Jan is distraught and suspicious of Jack’s crazy explanation of Michael’s disappearance/demise. Leah sees Jack wide-eyed with fear of everything outside and suspects a different explanation… Jack goes to the chemical shed and pours a defensive ring of neat, toxic herbicide around the edge of the concrete slab surrounding the farmhouse. (He fails to consider the decorative creeper growing up the outside of the house)

INT – JACK AND BETH’S ROOM – DAY

Leah discovers that Jack has kept some dissected pieces of the mushroom there. Jan discovers Leah in Jack’s room and challenges her – what’s she doing in there? – Leah tells Jan she suspects Jack is hallucinating – that the mushroom he was handling is psychedelic – none of his story is real and that Michael is probably fine – getting help.

INT – JEB”S OFFICE – DAY

Jan conspiratorially shows Beth the photo of Mum’s ring then reveals the real thing – explains it’s from mum’s skeleton unearthed under the gnarly tree, how she found it and why she thinks that Leah’s hiding something – knows something she’s not telling. Jan tells Beth Leah thinks Jack’s just hallucinating from mushroom contact. But Beth believes what Jack says happened – Jan needs to know for sure if Michael’s dead – what if he’s badly injured but still alive? Beth tells her not to go – it’s not safe – look what happened to Jack! Who else could go? Jan suggests they make Leah go – Leah was the one who killed their mother in childbirth: if there’s no truth to the vengeful mother returning, and it was all just a hallucination then Leah’s perfectly safe – but if their mother has somehow come back for vengeance then best she takes Leah and leaves Beth and Jan alone – Beth reluctantly agrees.

INT – FARMHOUSE – EVENING

Jack finishes with the herbicide and Jan gets him to show Leah on a map of the farm where he last saw Michael – right on the edge of their land – he tells Leah there’s nothing she can do for Michael – he’s dead – the roots seemed to be working with the fungus – like the mycorrhizal relationship in nature, only much, much faster – and more deadly – Jan interrupts him telling Leah not to go: she passively sends Leah out into the scary wood as an offering to monster (but officially to find Michael and also get help for worsening Jeb… )

EXT – GNARLY TREE – EVENING

As Leah and the dog pass by, a fruiting body of the fungus emerges on the surface of the gnarly tree – at time-lapse speed – menacingly quick… we see the tree is becoming covered in fungus – voraciously consuming it from within… mycelial fibres are increasingly clothing the outside of the skeleton as if it were being wrapped by an embalmer…

EXT – WILD FOREST – EVENING

… As the forest shimmers, hisses, creaks and groans with supernatural threat, Leah and the dog come upon the body of Michael lying on the forest floor where we last saw him…

INT – JEB’S OFFICE – EVENING

… Searching with Jan, Beth exclaims as she finally discovers their mother’s death certificate – she’s shocked by what she reads…

EXT – WILD FOREST – EVENING

…Leah approaches Michael with great caution, looking closely for signs of life – she turns Michael’s body over – it’s horrifically consumed by fungus and penetrated by roots – hugely unnatural advanced decay – his body is already hollowed out by fungus and maggots which crawl out of his mouth – eel-like amphibian scavengers wriggle out of his eye sockets… Leah backs away, struggling to comprehend how this could have happened so quickly…

INT – JEB’S OFFICE – EVENING

… Beth and Jan discover that it wasn’t Leah that killed their mother – she didn’t die in childbirth – she was poisoned…!

… Jeb regains consciousness and starts calling out the name of his wife – as a warning? A plea for mercy?…

… more mycelial strands are penetrating the roots inside the skeleton – they start to pulse with bioluminescence – sending a signal…

… Leah senses the forest floor coming to life around her – beside Michael’s body the forest floor explodes in a tsunami of roots and leaves heading straight for Leah… as they hit her she’s thrown up into the air by the force of it, but when she lands she is not devoured – the roots are rushing past her – she can hardly believe it – but realises with dread that this dark energy is heading towards her family back at the farmhouse – Leah starts running back the way she came, following in the wake of the roots that are gathering in numbers and power…

…Jack is lighting oil lamps when he hears a rumbling from outside…

… axe in hand, Jack steps out onto the concrete slab outside the front door and sees the tsunami of roots coming across the fields towards the farmhouse – he sees the frontrunners make contact with his ring of herbicide in the soil at the edge of the slab – the roots recoil: hissing and squirming in agony – his defences work! – he reassures Beth and Jan who’ve come to the door – but then he senses something in his feet – he gets down and puts his ear to the concrete – he hears what sounds like big roots scraping deep under the slab: the creeper growing up the outside of the house starts to come to life – Beth and Jan retreat inside – Jack takes his axe to the creeper, but its branches are too quick – too many…

… Leah sprints back to her family…

INT – FARMHOUSE – NIGHT

… the creeper is breaking the glass in the windows to get inside, in spite of Jack’s efforts, roots are coming in through the door, Jan sees terrified Jeb and accuses him of poisoning their mother, killing her – Jeb denies, but Jan doesn’t believe him – as Jack comes in Jan decides they have to get Jeb out of the house and give him to the monster – it’s their mother avenging her murder by Jeb. Jack’s desperate – agrees, but Beth hears Jeb’s protests of his innocence and refuses to deliver her father to the monster – as Jack axes roots that are beginning to encircle them Jan attacks Beth who’s clinging to Jeb to protect him. As Jan becomes more violent trying to detach pregnant Beth from their father, a root grabs Jan by the ankle, abruptly pulls her off Beth with great force and lifts her though the air as it suddenly pulls her outside – lethally smashing Jan against the walls as her limp body scrapes through the window like a rag doll

On the way, Jan’s flailing limbs knock over oil lamps which starts a fire inside. Beth and Jack immediately start to try and put out the fire – Jack sees that the roots are recoiling from the fire – and just as Beth almost has the fire under control, Jack seizes the opportunity of Beth’s distraction, picks up Jeb and carries him outside. Firefighting Beth roars in protest – but it turns into a contraction and she falls to her knees – now the fire instantly regains its strength …

EXT – FARMHOUSE – NIGHT

… Leah arrives back at farmhouse as Jeb is carrying her father outside – anticipating resistance to his mission, Jack shouts that Jeb poisoned her mother and Jeb’s the one she wants (Jeb says “No!”)… and then Jack becomes aware that Leah is standing where Jack wants to throw Jeb – amongst the moiling roots swirling beyond the slab – LEAH IS UNHARMED – How can this be? Jack knows what these roots can and will do! Has she been possessed by the mother? Leah works out that Jack intends her father’s fate to be the same as Michael’s and decides to stop him – she tells him to stand still, walks towards him onto the slab, and demands Jack give her Jeb – terrified Jack is frozen to the spot – as Leah approaches from his front, he doesn’t see the creeper roots are snaking over the concrete behind him – Jack lets Leah (the monster?) take Jeb just as a creeper root tugs him forcibly away – more roots grab, bend him backwards and snap his spine before dragging him into the creeper growing up the house where he’s dismembered into pieces which are dragged in different directions up the walls, through the leaves.

Leah hears Beth scream as something crashes inside the burning farmhouse: she lays Jeb down on the concrete slab and rushes into the building to save her sister.

INT – FARMHOUSE – NIGHT

It’s ablaze and Beth is screaming with contractions, but she’s not being attacked by the roots, Leah sees that the roots seem to be trying to put the fire out, sap hissing as they’re burned in the attempt – she tries to help labouring Beth out of the fire, but structural timbers collapse onto Beth’s legs – she is trapped – in spite of the efforts of the roots the fire is out of control – Leah cannot move Beth and both of them are struggling to breathe… Beth knows how this is going to end – she helps Leah make the decision: “Save my baby!” Leah grabs a knife, c-sections the baby out of her dying sister and manages to get out of the blazing house alive with the dripping new-born…

EXT – FARMHOUSE – NIGHT

… Leah goes to Jeb who’s barely alive, lying on the concrete slab that is still some kind of a safety raft in the maelstrom. Dying Jeb whispers to Leah: he didn’t poison their mother – but after Leah was born he had to start using chemicals on the farm, to make ends meet, but her mother thought he was poisoning their farm with the chemicals – the farm that they’d made together to nourish their children (Jeb looks at the new born) all children – Jeb wouldn’t listen to her and in despair she killed herself with the same poison he was using on the land. Jeb asks Leah to forgive him. Leah forgives, just as a root finally cracks the concrete, reaches around Jeb’s neck and decapitates him.

The baby’s hungry, but devastated Leah picks up a piece of burning wood from the collapsing house…

EXT – FARM CHEMICAL STORE – NIGHT

Leah kicks over a drum and throws her burning wood into the store – as she walks away with the baby the store explodes into flames…

Even from a distance the flickering flames cast their light on the mother’s skeleton hanging in the roots of the decaying tree as Leah strides away from the burning farmhouse with the baby and the dog. The dog barks as if possessed as it tries to block Leah’s path to her mother, but she will not be stopped – furious, Leah defiantly holds the baby up to her mother’s skull and dares to shout “Enough!” – the dog stops barking but her mother’s unblinking eye sockets meet Leah’s penetrating gaze as the baby cries and cries…

INT – MEDICAL CLINIC – DAY
As a form of retaliation from his former employer, an unnamed government sponsored entity with immense authoritative powers and no accountability nor oversite, our main Protagonist is essentially fired and forced to undergo psychological treatment in order to receive pension.
But of course, the treatment already includes his false diagnosis, because what he experienced is real, and that is part of the coverup and veil of power they have over society.
Indigo, our main protagonist has to make life adjustments by getting a part time job as security at the abortion clinic, while also attempting to become a screenwriter, all while attending out patient mental health to deal with his “stuff”.
It is revealed during one of the sessions, by a depth psychologist, a traumatic experience going back to a vehicle accident. But that memory is refuted and a focus on his mental instability is prioritized. Textbook ‘mental disorder not otherwise specified condition’ is the label- standard western medical bullshit speak for fuck this guy.
The institutionalized educated “doctor”, we learn is under the supervision of our Antagonist Ashkenazi, has already been given our protagonist’s diagnosis before he walked through the clinic doors. SCOP-Standard corrupt operating procedures. This ultimately adds to levels of distrust our protagonist embodies.
During a particularly electrical thunder-stormy day, our Protagonist’s girlfriend unbeknownst to him, undergoes an abortion. Can a man be affected when his unborn child is fighting for its life during an abortion? In our biased matriarchal society, does it matter?
Conducted within a plan by the employer-sponsored doctor when he signed up many years prior, this aborted fetus is used as part of the ingredient in the serum gestated with anti-matter in creating the Anti-Christ. Our Protagonist walked into a trap designed hundreds of thousands of years ago, maybe longer. The next question to ponder is, was his accident and accident?

Gabriel is so profoundly impressed with the certainty of the impending outbreak that he goes direct to confer with the Constellation Fathers regarding the measures to be employed in case of open rebellion. (Keep in mind, he was impressed, profoundly; not necessarily against.)

Lucifer Declaration of Liberty
1) The reality of the Universal Father.
Lucifer charges that the Universal Father does not really exist. That physical gravity and space-energy are inherent in the universe, and that the Father is a myth invented by the Paradise Sons, to enable them to maintain the rule of the universes, in the Father’s name.

He denies that personality is a gift of the Universal Father. He even intimates that the finaliters are in collusion with the Paradise Sons to foist fraud upon all creation since they never brought back a very clear-cut idea of the Father’s actual personality as it is discernible on Paradise. He trades on reverence as ignorance.

The charge is sweeping, terrible, and blasphemous. It is this veiled attack upon the finaliters that no doubt influences the ascendant citizens then on Jerusem to stand firm and remain steadfast in resistance to all the rebel’s proposals.

50:1.3 (572.5) Being quite alone as representatives of divinity on the
individual planets, these Sons are tested severely, and Nebadon has suffered

In the creation of the System Sovereigns and the Planetary Princes there occurs the personalization of a concept that has been getting farther and farther away from the Universal Father and the Eternal Son, and there is an increasing danger of losing the sense of proportion as to one’s self-importance and a greater likelihood of failure to keep a proper grasp of the values and relationships of the numerous orders of divine beings and their gradations of authority.

THAT THE FATHER IS NOT PERSONALLY PRESENT IN THE LOCAL UNIVERSE ALSO IMPOSES A CERTAIN TEST OF FAITH AND LOYALTY ON ALL THESE SONS.

2) The universe government of the Creator Son-Michael.
Lucifer contends that the local systems should be autonomous.
He protests against the right of Michael, the Creator Son, to assume sovereignty of Nebadon in the name of a hypothetical Paradise Father and require all personalities to acknowledge allegiance to this unseen Father. [this unseen father is cause used against our Hero, due to the abandonment of his father at birth.]
He asserted that the whole plan of worship was a clever scheme to aggrandize the Paradise Sons.

Lucifer IS willing to acknowledge Michael as his Creator-father, but not as his God and rightful ruler.

He exhorts his followers to believe that none of these rulers could do aught to interfere with the operation of complete home rule if men and angels only had the courage to assert themselves and boldly claim their rights.

He contends that the executioners of the Ancients of Days be debarred from functioning in the local systems if the native beings would only assert their independence.

He maintains that immortality is inherent in the system personalities, that resurrection is natural and automatic, and that all beings will live eternally except for the arbitrary and unjust acts of the executioners of the Ancients of Days.

3) The attack upon the universal plan of ascendant mortal training.
Lucifer maintains that far too much time and energy is expended upon the scheme of so thoroughly training ascending mortals in the principles of universe administration, principles which he alleged were unethical and unsound.

He protests against the agelong program for preparing the mortals of space for some unknown destiny and pointed to the presence of the finaliter corps on Jerusem as proof that these mortals have spent ages of preparation for some destiny of pure fiction.

With derision he points out that the finaliters have encountered a destiny no more glorious than to be returned to humble spheres similar to those of their origin.

He intimates that they have been debauched by overmuch discipline and prolonged training, and that they are in reality traitors to their mortal fellows since they are now co-operating with the scheme of enslaving all creation to the fictions of a mythical eternal destiny for ascending mortals.

He advocates that ascenders should enjoy the liberty of individual self-determination. [In the USA, symbolized through the Statute of Liberty]
He challenges and condemns the entire plan of mortal ascension as sponsored by the Paradise Sons of God and supported by the Infinite Spirit.

And it was with such a Declaration of Liberty that Lucifer launched his orgy of darkness and death.

Is there a soul connection with men and their life-force seed (sperm)? Our Male Protagonist does not know why he feels discomfort, because she never tells him, yet the affects are real to/him. Because his aborted child was tormented during the abortion. Why does a part of him feel torment?

Is the monster the abortion doctor and politician with the slogan, “abortion is between a woman, her doctor, and the government (hush-hush, but not the father)”?

Technology of particle accelerator used to harness dark energy for the purpose of merging with aborted fetus, while the world chants Black Lives Matter? Black lives referring to black souls, not people. The energy of destruction riots, theft, social chaos; to bring forth the Anti-Christ.

INT – COURTHOUSE – DAY
Lucifer’s folly was the attempt to do the non-doable, to short-circuit time in an experiential universe. Lucifer’s crime was the attempted creative disenfranchisement of every personality in the system of Satania, the unrecognized abridgment of the creature’s personal participation—freewill participation—in the long evolutionary struggle to attain the status of light and life both individually and collectively.

The prince’s corporeal staff early organize the planetary schools of training and culture, wherein the cream of the evolutionary races are instructed and then sent forth to teach these better ways to their people.
Although the remote tribes continue in hunting and food foraging, the students and teachers in the Prince’s schools are all agriculturists and horticulturists.

1. Physical labor. Cultivation of the soil, associated with home building and embellishment.
2. Social activities. Play performances and cultural social groupings.
3. Educational application. Individual instruction in connection with family-group teaching, supplemented by specialized class training.
4. Vocational training. Schools of marriage and homemaking, the schools of art and craft training, and the classes for the training of teachers—secular, cultural, and religious.

Fully satisfied by a non-flesh diet, the considerations which determines their residence in a warm region abounding in fruits and nuts the Persian Gulf. The one great task of those ages was to transform man from a hunter to a herder, with the hope that later on he would evolve into a peace-loving, home-abiding farmer.
Each person of this group is capable of becoming co-parental to some new order of physical being, carefully instructed to resort to parenthood only under certain conditions.

He advocated that ascenders should enjoy the liberty of individual self-determination.
What if Mercy is the plea from Lucifer, in that he was attempting to be perfect like God is perfect, as commanded? Would not God forgive him and have mercy?
Mercy is simply justice tempered by that wisdom which grows out of perfection of knowledge and the full recognition of the natural weaknesses and environmental handicaps of finite creatures. “Our God is full of compassion, gracious, long-suffering, and plenteous in mercy.”
Therefore “whosoever calls upon the Lord shall be saved,” “for he will abundantly pardon.”
God is divinely kind to sinners. When rebels return to righteousness, they are mercifully received, “for our God will abundantly pardon.” “I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.” “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed upon us that we should be called the sons of God.”

Cessation of Existence – Dissolution of soul
Cessation of existence is usually decreed at the dispensational or epochal adjudication of the realm or realms. On a world such as Urantia it comes at the end of a planetary dispensation.
Cessation of existence can be decreed at such times by co-ordinate action of all tribunals of jurisdiction, extending from the planetary council up through the courts of the Creator Son to the judgment tribunals of the Ancients of Days.
The mandate of dissolution originates in the higher courts of the superuniverse following an unbroken confirmation of the indictment originating on the sphere of the wrongdoer’s residence (Earth); and then, when sentence of extinction has been confirmed on high, the execution is by the direct act of those judges residential on, and operating from, the headquarters of the superuniverse.

Never again does it appear as a personality; its identity becomes as though it had never been.

In any universe contest between actual levels of reality, the personality of the higher level will ultimately triumph over the personality of the lower level.
