Brendan Williams Day 1 Assignment
I learned the different kinds of reality shows out there and how to combine formats to create a unique idea for a show. Also, I learned the basic questions to ask myself when having an idea for a possible reality TV show.
Lesson #1Assignment Part. 1
GROUP 1: Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath. Format: Make-Over (regarding a make over of their mental health), Docu-Soap, and Structured Relationships.
GROUP 2: Dino Hunters. Format: Adventure/ Exploration and Occupation Soap.
GROUP 3: Dating Around: Structured Relationships of new blind date couples, Docu-series on dating, and Adventure/Exploration around the dating scene.
GROUP 4: Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted. Adventure/ Exploration, Occupation Soap.
GROUP 5: Who Wants to be A Millionaire?. Competition Reality, Game Show, and a tiny bit of Topical regarding the host using humor to tell stories, communicate with contestants, and use his talk show persona on the show.
Assignment Part. 2
Show Idea: World Cuisine Cook-Off.
What is the rough premise of the show? A team of cooks from a restaurant that specializes in a certain global cuisine (such as a Japanese, Italian, Mexican, or Etc) competes against another restaurant with a completely different cuisine and they must cook each other’s menus while adding their own stamp on the dishes. An example would be an Italian restaurant from Little Italy vs. a Japanese restaurant from San Francisco. How would a Japanese cook create Italian dishes using influences from his own cooking and style?
What is the format or hybrid format you’ve chosen? The main format is the “Cooking/Baking Competition Reality” format, but there’s also an element of the “Game Show” format and the “Occupation-Soap” as we see head chefs of these restaurants interact with their sous chefs on how they will tackle a menu that’s far different than their own. We see that relationship between the head chef and their employees.
Who are the real life characters? The real life characters are the kitchen employees of a popular who are determined to win each challenge. When the show begins, we get backstories on the chefs and how they opened their restaurant and created their menus. Also, because the prize money goes to charity, we get an insight into what charity the cooks are playing and what’s their emotional connection to the charity.
What are the situations that these characters find themselves in? Each culinary team must prepare a menu that’s not a direct copycat but is influenced by the menu of the competitive team. They have a certain time to complete each challenge. There are five challenges each cover the traditional “Five Course Meal”.
What is the setting? The setting is a restaurant style kitchen built in a soundstage. It’s suppose to look like a restaurant with posters of famous restaurants around the world. There’s a dinning room table for the judges that will try the food and judge it while awarding points.
What is the viewers experience? The viewer watches a competitive game between two restaurants that specializes in a different kind of cuisine, however at the same time, they are getting ideas for their own home cooking and learning about a restaurant they can visit when they’re in that area. Also, because the restaurants are playing for charity, they are learning about an important charity. We also have a segment where we learn about the country and their cuisine, so this is also an educational show.
How do you envision it being a series that can run for multiple seasons over many years? Like other cooking competition shows, Master Chef, The Great British Bake Off, and many others, this show can run for many seasons because there’s no shortage of restaurants that specializes in various cuisines and restaurants will hopefully want to play the game to win money for a charity of their choice.

Esther’s Alternative TV Project Assignment #1 and #2
What I learned doing this assignment is all of the various formats that reality TV encompasses and that an idea while interesting may not be the best for a series. It was interesting to learn how having multiple formats in a hybrid really make for an engaging show.
Group #1
Tiger King. Format: Docu-Series, Occu-Soap, Adventure
Group #2
Below Deck. Format: Occu-soap, Structured Relationship, Adventure
Group #3
Dating Around. Format: Docu-soap, Structured Relationship
Group #4
Mysteries At the Museum. Format: Adventure/Exploration
Group #5
Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Format: Competition, Game
Assignment #2
Reality Series: (Name TBD)
A. A one or two sentence explanation of the show.
Following the lives of a group of young musician friends that work at a music label in order to break into the music industry and get noticed.
B. Format or Hybrid that you’ve chosen
Docu-Soap, Occu-Soap, Structured Relationship
C. The real life characters
Assistants, interns and entry level employees at a music label that work together.
D. The situation these characters find themselves in.
They work together, compete for limited time/relationships with superiors and people within the music industry for their day jobs and personal music dreams, while at the same time being friends and a support system for one another.
E. The Setting
New York, LA or Austin at a US label, or in an Asian country where the next supergroups are made (like the documentary on Black Pink) where groups of girls live together, play and work together while competing for limited spots in the group.
F. The viewer experience
Seeing the music industry from the inside out, experiencing the dreams, struggles, and interpersonal relationships of friends trying to make it in an ultracompetitive environment. Also seeing the structured employer, employee and interpersonal relationships and how they change as breakthroughs are made. The viewer will get to experience watching the how far they are willing to go/sacrifice in order to make their dreams a personal reality.
Tell us how you envision it being a SERIES that can run for one or more seasons.
Much like the docu-soaps on Bravo today, the show can continue as a series as the next group of assistants or interns comes to the label and following the relationships of the cast as they help or hinder one other.

segment by on-camera Main Host2. Select one idea and give us a 1st draft answer for each of the following:
A. A one or two-sentence explanation of the show.
Responding quickly to save lives, protect property and the environment, and meet basic human needs in an aftermath of an incident or natural disaster.
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Invitational gets its roots from the annual Emergency Response Team (ERT) Challenge that was held bi-annually by the Business & Industry Council for Emergency Planning and Preparedness (BICEPP).
B. The format or hybrid format you’ve chosen.

2. RELATIONSHIPS: Individual and Team Members
3. DOCU-SERIES: Segments of different Teams Each Week
4. TRAVEL: Different Cities and states with showcasing
5. MAKEOVER: Explanation of Lesson Tips by approved experts for home and away
C. The real-life characters.
1. Preparedness is the shared responsibility of our entire nation, with 3,300 CERT Teams listed by state and U.S. Territories.
2. Three Celebrity Hosts; two for the two teams each and one Main Host.
3. BICEPP Executive Board Experts as Judges. Amount TBD.
4. Inclusion of ‘Rex’ the homeland security/FEMA live-action mountain lion ‘Ready Kits Mascot’ who has the head of a feline and the body of a weightlifter dressed in full costume to point, display, and showcase — all in pantomime — in order to assist our Main Host in communication with our television audience, especially the children.
5. Our Main Host may refer to Rex’s family of wife ‘Purrcilla’ and his daughter ‘Rory’ on the importance and need for certain preparedness items pertaining to families
D. The situation these characters find themselves in.
1. Each team will be in a fish-out-of-water scenario since contestants are not full-time first responders, if private, but are mostly utilized and called into action only in times of disaster.
2. Seven skills to be performed by each team in simulated environments of disasters, including hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, wildfires, floods, tropical storms, train derailments, MTA Bus accidents, all created by Hollywood special effects experts and others to ensure reality, including professional Moulage makeup for victim authenticity.
3. Conducting search and rescue operations to locate and rescue persons in distress from start to finish, inside and outside of selected buildings, subways, train depots, movie theatres, locations; i.e. Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles County Fire Training Facility, and wherever the public congregates, to include establishing the condemnation of unsafe structures.
4. Tension, sacrifice, good fair play, stress, comfortability on camera will all play key roles.
5. A race against the clock urgency will award points in selected categories with a live audience and three celebrity hosts familiar with disaster drills and training.
6. A pressure-cooker atmosphere for contestants will exist where the fast-action-paced drama will unfold as it occurs and the individual contestants of each team’s true characterizations will rise to the surface.
7. Ensuring a safe environment throughout timely communications.
8. Designated and/or qualifying teams must plan to work together to survive into the next round of competition while creating a heightened reality.
E. The setting.
1. Various locales and cities for the two teams taking part. Will involve travel and showcasing of those cities selected with on-screen welcomes by the Mayor and Governor of each state, all encouraging Americans to volunteer to improve and safeguard the nation by agreeing to join CERT in their individual communities and learn the skills presented and practice the safe lesson tips in each segment.
2. Short lesson tips with demonstrations by the Main Host using appropriate props and set dressing to explain each lesson:
<br clear=”all”>
· House bolting to foundations.
· Strapping propane tanks and correct storage.
· Checklist for your home essentials to prepare to shelter-in-place at home and at work. Raising utilities above level of flood risk.
· Securing furniture survival checklist for your car and the essentials.
· Grab and go tube kits for kids.
· Assembling of disaster supplies
· Developing a plan and safe room at home
· Ready to go backpacks with survival gear essentials
· Emergency radios
· Securing appliances and office equipment
· Locating shutoffs for gas, electricity, and water.
· Storing a natural gas wrench for availability
· Demonstration of natural gas shutoff by the Main Host
· Locating and turning off the main water valve to the home or apartment
· Securing water heater to the wall
· Proper usage of a fire extinguisher and what their alphabetical codes mean; sizes for home and car.
· Making out-of-state family connections for communications.
· Area Code and cellular telephone discussions and why they may not work.
<br clear=”all”>
F. And the viewer experience:
1. Interviews and insights with secondary hosts looking into the competitors’ full-time occupations and private lives.
2. Focusing on the individual contenders, so the audience will care about what happens to them before, during, and after the competition that our editors can tap out of sequence from a pool of digitized footage to tell their human stories, which will provide exposure to a broad range of human experiences not available in other programming.
3. Witnessing honor guards from the Boy Scouts of America, Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs, Campfire Girls, YMVA, Rotary Clubs, ROTC, etc with each ceremony will include a TBA local high school band and drill team playing the National Anthem with a regular performance later in the program for the live audience.
4. The possibility exists of expanding the competitive team base to allow many more team cities to take part and to start a new, innovative concept for television — by simultaneously creating two additional hosting teams in:
· The Spanish language
· ASL (American Sign Language) with full sound so each segment may be enjoyed equally by hearing audiences as well to the 26-to-36 million who are deaf or hearing impaired, just in the United States alone.
· Each structured script will follow the same formula pattern, except that all achievements will happen simultaneously with all three hosting teams in action and edited later for distribution to all three major demographic markets: English, Spanish, and ASL, and all with no form of captioning for having three marketing versions of the same episode throughout the series.
· VTR quick lesson tips will be updated and vary on different topics during each future segment(s) and subject to prior review and approval for broadcast using as many of the sponsored items as necessary on camera.
3. Tell us how you envision it being a SERIES that can run for one or more seasons.
A. Different people, different cities, different relationships, timely stories, and topics.
B. Availability of educational lessons being updated before each segment with varying topics and instructional skills that anyone can perform.
C. An audience of at a minimum of 3,300 CERT teams across the United States, if not competing personally, cheering on their favorite cities to win. Other countries also tuning in.
D. The ASL Community alone in 2012 maintained approximately $333 billion in purchasing power per year and pays attention to ASL programming for viewing or purchase.
E. Introducing in Year two: a “Teen ERT – The National Championships,” using teenage high school student CERT team volunteers and by:
F. Year Three: “Global ERT-The Global Championships,” involving the CERT teams from around the world.
4. Answer the question, “What I learned doing this assignment is…” and put that at the top of your assignments.
