Lee’s Transformational Journey
What I learned doing this lesson is…how easy it is to create a new protagonist and their journey if you’re not so worried about all the other details of the story to come. Just focus on the task at hand and let the other stuff wait for its time.
Protagonist – Milly, a middle-school student
INTERNAL JOURNEY – Milly at the beginning is a timid, shy girl in a small rural high school who has just lost her father to suspicious circumstances and has no idea what to do.
By the end, she’s grown into a confident, secure young woman who is very capable of “taking care of herself” when necessary.
EXTERNAL JOURNEY – When Milly’s father is kidnapped and the government, who employed him, disavows his very existence, Milly is left alone and entirely at a loss as to what to do.
By the end, Milly is unhesitant to take actions when needed, can formulate a plan, and has a healthy sense of who she is. Though she’s generally a nice, sweet person, she’s capable of being “taking care of business” when necessary.
Old Ways – Timid, shrinking, tentative, without a strategy, just passing through life, not making much happen one way or another.
New Ways – Assertive, proactive, knows what she wants, victorious, has developed a “certain set of skills” to use when needed, has made her family whole again.

Lee Tidball. Reason: I decided to go with a different project. At this point, I need a script with a simpler story, less characters, and more "producible," not another large-scale project

Emmanuel’s Transformational Journey
What I learned doing this assignment is each character has an arc, but the antagonist and protagonist’s arc should be the focus and prominent. Both primary characters have a goal or want something, and they must go through a journey and transformation to get what they want.

Hi Cheryl, I thought I’d replied and sent my assignment for Day 1 but I don’t see it here. Did it come through? I like to print out my responses to keep in my notebook so if there’s an easy way to do this please advise. Thanks, Kathi

David’s Transformational Journey
I learned in this lesson, not only that characters are always changing, giving them a reason for the audience to engage and follow their different journeys, but also remembering the elation and new found self-esteem when my final film was shown before faculty, students, and guests with great applause, and remembering the hard work and dedication I put into making a kick-ass short film where even the actors present were able to receive the appreciation from the audience.
2. Reg is an adolescent elven boy that has awoken as a captive onboard a ship after being accused of bringing death and strife to his nomadic clan. Escaping into a new, strange world, Reg must not only try to correct things with his clan, but figure out how to remove this new shape-shifting curse he has been stricken with.
– The internal journey for Reg is finding his internal voice, and creating his own sense of right and wrong versus what has been preached over and over by the elders.
– The external journey is find a way to remove his curse, and discover new ways to blend in with the word around as he tries to rectify what has happened to his clan.
Old Ways – Children are only to be seen, not heard.
– The bigotries of the clan are to be accepted and followed by all, no questioning.
– The chieftain and council have final word.
New Ways – Reg starts to question the views and teachings of his clan.
– To not be heard is to not learn, so speak up to learn new things.
– Reg decides his own future, not based upon the whims of a relic chieftain that will not evolve.

Who is your Hero and what is their Character Arc that represents a transformation?
Fran is a former hippie suburbanite who’s come to believe she’s a Socialist, like her best friend. She supports most progressive causes, like anti-gun and pro-choice issues. She has a comfortable life that she worked hard for but her friend makes her feel guilty for what she has, especially compared to those who don’t have much. When the new government imposes its own version of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, confiscates her home and resettles her to a farm for reeducation and hard labor, she sees the true impact of these theoretical beliefs she’s bought into so complacently. When she finds out her daughter (separated and living in an adjacent area) is pregnant but the government is going to force an abortion, she becomes an outlaw and combatant and raises up arms to save her future grandchild.
Internal journey: From passive and reluctant to assertive and decisive.
External Journey: From a mere talker to someone who takes action into her own hands.
Old Ways: Fran starts out:
A follower, deferring to her friend who mouths the Socialist philosophy
Like her friend, excoriating those who disagree with this philosophy
Fearful
Compliant
Weak
New Ways: Fran ends up:
Courageous
Willing to fight for her family, despite it going against her earlier values and beliefs
Open to different views of what the truth is
Independent
Strong
What I learned. The path is more clear cut when you set up opposites in terms of your Hero’s internal and external journeys.

Lisa’s Transformational Journey
What I learned from this assignment is to go deeper into the mind of the character and to empathize with them, making a more powerful character arc in the story.
David, an alcoholic dad of two young children, dies of alcohol poisoning, leaving them behind with their abusive mother. He wants to come back and make amends for his kids and be a better father, but the only way he can go back is by becoming a dog. What he doesn’t know is that he must experience the same abuse and neglect he caused his kids before he can be reunited with them. By the end of the movie, he is so profoundly grateful for his kids, being their loyal companion and friend.
Internal journey: from weak and overcome by alcoholism, to loyal and protective, determined to be there for his former kids.
External journey: From alcoholic, absent father to loyal family pet and companion.
Old ways:
Alcoholic
Doesn’t stand up for himself
Absent from his kids lives much of the time
New ways:
Loyal companion
Grateful to be in the presence of his former kids
Fights for what he wants and doesn’t give up until he can be with his kids once again

Ying Warrior Princess’s Transformational Journey
What I learned is… that I need to force my lead character change more. In the beginning she believes more in her tribe’s traditional war-like approach and slowly changes from distrust into making and trusting her alliances with groups outside her tribe.
Who is your Hero and what is their Character Arc that represents a transformation? Ying – Warrior Princess
Ying is a true historical person. She is a member of an indigenous tribe in today’s SE China. She was born into a tribal leader’s family. She has an older brother who embodies the tribe’s traditional ways honoring only strength, bravery, and ferocity to people outside the tribe.
Internal Journey: Lady Xian starts with some of the characteristics that will ultimately make her a great leader including bravery, kindness, and open-mindedness. But, she idolizes her older brother and at first she believes in the tribe’s traditional and warlike ways that her brother embodies. She does not believe she can lead the tribe as well as he can. Through the story she begins to see that previously rival tribes have a common goal and that all Huaxia are not trying to exterminate her tribe. Ultimately, she creates alliances that help defeat the much larger and better equipped forces alined against her tribe.
External Journey: Ying’s tribe is threatened by Han Chinese in the north determined to subjugate or eliminate all tribal peoples.
What are the Old Ways and New Ways?
Old ways – to fight, mistrust everyone outside of the tribe especially Han Chinese.
New ways – Treat Han Chinese as individuals and form alliances with the good ones while fighting bad ones. Ying learns to make peace and ally with rival tribes.

Sassy’s Transformational Journey
What I learned doing this assignment is…
The internal arc is also more for the Antagonists, because the Hero doesn’t change internally too much.
Who is your Hero and what is their Character Arc that represents a transformation?
Internal Journey: From feeling unattractive and withdrawn, to not giving a crap about the exterior anymore.
Ant: they learn not to judge a book by it’s cover.External Journey: From silent partner/co-owner with low profit margins to high profile success, and Respected BOSS
3. What are the Old Ways and New Ways?
OLD WAYS
Protagonist: Software/tech Company Owner
~Feels unattractive, disfigured. Handicapped.
~ has many Vet friends.
~Not taking enough responsibility or being involved enough in his own software/tech company
Ignorant of what’s causing his sales and stock prices to plummet.<div>
Antagonists employees/Programmers:
Preconceived notions of whats “attractive”
Snobs that look down on those they think are not as smart as them
Cliquish
emotionally stunted (SMARTER and less EQ or empathy)
Assigned CEO, not doing the job properly ( turns out to be the biggest antagonist? Not training people competently enough.)
NEW WAYS
by the end…
Protagonist is successful by taking more responsibility for his work. Less modest? Accepts being the hero, even with a physical disability he cannot control.
FEELS SEEN, and realizes outer beauty ironically doesn’t define him.
Takes pride in his appearance, but it’s not that important to him after all.
Employees/Antagonists./ COUILD BE CEO OR TOP PROGRAMMER. who is major ANT. His best friend, whom he trusted blindly. He heals their relationship, co-workers relationships, and the company heals, too.
+Have acquired. empathy and communication skills.
Are humbled when they get their asses handed back them.
Treats all employees with respect. (learned to respect themselves and understand their wounds.)

Pat’s transformational journey
WHAT I LEARNED: Without worrying about being plot specific, I was surprised at the depth that I was able to give to my character.
Ivy Davies, a seemingly right wing and staunch- in-her ways senior citizen widow with a well-hidden criminal past and present.
INTERNAL JOURNEY: Living and almost believing the lies she tells others about herself to coming to terms with and publicly admitting to her criminal deeds.
EXTERNAL JOURNEY: A lower middle class secretive widow to local hero, albeit outside of the law hero.
OLD WAYS: Obsessive about her daily routines as a way of hiding her illicit activities; stern and standoffish with her granddaughter; bitter over the necessity of living a frugal life.
NEW WAYS: Spontaneous and content with what she possesses. An open and honest relationship with her granddaughter.

Amelia’s Transformational Writing Journey? What I learned? I am the slacker who needs to have pressure to work! Not completely true and not new but I got caught up in my life last week so I will scramble to catch up.
Who am I creating? Blaze, a 20 something non-binary (Female Actor) Artist evolves from a scrappy, does what ever needs to be done to survive, doesn’t trust anyone to a self confident accomplished person who is released from her guilt and loss.
Internal Journey: From feeling unloved, not accepted, detached, untrusting of everyone to finding herself and learning to trust/love.
External Journey: From living day to day, surviving, void of attachments to becoming a part of a community.
Blaze’s old ways: – takes advantage for the advantage
– focused on survival, meeting current needs, not looking at the futuregio;d
– scrapper; doesn’t trust anyone
– unaware of how her actions effect others
Blaze’s new ways: – self confident/accomplished
– released from guilt and loss
