JAYE’S LEVEL 2 HORROR EMOTION SCENE
What I learned is that setting up a scene that follows the template for fear, suspense, and dread, helps ensure the writer is on the right path to creating great horror.
I’m hoping to create fear, suspense and dread with this rough draft:
“The Creek”
The following scene takes place in an old abandoned house, filled with dark secrets and bad juju. This is why no lights are working. Perhaps I’ll need to introduce flashlights and candles… a full moon and a skylight… I’m not trying to have a movie take place in darkness, I hate when you can’t see stuff… but it’s an abandoned house. Maybe I can have someone bring lights or a generator….
Anyway, here’s a scene from Act 2:
INT. LIVING ROOM – NIGHT
Sarah and Karen appear at the bottom of the stairs. Whitney and
Marcus are deep in conversation.KAREN
You guys find Josh yet?Marcus looks up with a tense jaw. Whitney’s eyes are wet. Karen
and Sarah share a look of awkward regret and slide past. David
passes.KAREN
No Josh?David shakes his head, rolls his eyes. Heads upstairs.
Karen calls up to him.
KAREN
Stay out of the back bedroom,
Robert’s jacking off!DAVID (O.S.)
Thanks for the warning! The girls laugh and walk across the living room to a small corridor.
They note spray paint on the wall. Artwork interrupted.
Sarah examines the graffiti with respect.
SARAH
He’s actually pretty good.Karen walks her fingers up Sarah’s back and tickles her neck. Sarah
scrunches down and giggles. Karen moves in for another kiss, and
Sarah accepts.Sarah backs against the wall and puts her arms around Karen’s neck
as Karen goes in harder. She brings her hand to Sarah’s breast.A nearby door ekes open. Soundless.
A GURGLED WHISPER comes from beyond and Sarah stops.
SARAH
Was that you?KAREN
It’s all me.Karen moves in again.
THE WHISPER COMES LOUDER.
GURGLED WHISPER
Karen…Karen stops. Looks over at the barely open door, then back at Sarah.
Mystery solved.KAREN
Josh.Karen approaches. Opens the door wider. Blackness.
Sarah clutches Karen’s arm.
SARAH
Let’s get David.Karen scoffs. Pulls her cell phone from her clutch. She turns on the
flashlight. She bites her lip, sexy.KAREN
Let’s go fuck with him.She holds her phone’s light and scans the basement.
KAREN
(a loud whisper)
Josh!It’s quiet.
KAREN
Wanna get your freak on??She giggles devilishly and takes a step down.
Sarah looks over her shoulder and down the hall. Not a person in
sight.Karen continues down wooden, creaky stairs. Sarah, still holding her
arm, is prompted to follow.Karen scans the room: shovels, a washer and dryer, furnace, piles of
blankets, gardening supplies, spray paint cans scattered. Long
shadows. At the base of the stairs, an entrance to another room.Karen holds the rail. Sarah clutches her arm as they slowly descend.
A dusty cobweb hits Sarah in the face and she lets out a contained
squeal.Karen almost drops her phone.
Her shaking flashlight reveals a quick flash under the stairs. Josh is
standing below! Bloody, trance-like, eyes wide open! But the girls don’t see. Karen is glaring at Sarah who desperately
brushes cobwebs from her hair.KAREN
Watch it, dumbass! I almost
dropped my phone!Sarah’s on the verge of tears.
SARAH
Sorry!
(gasps for her composure)
But shine it up here!Sarah indicates to the ceiling before them.
KAREN
Where’s your phone?!The girls do not notice the door at the top of the stairs silently
closes.SARAH
Your boyfriend’s probably
jizzing on it.Karen huffs. She shines the light ahead of them, upward.
More cobwebs. In a far corner, a giant spider.
Sarah shudders. She squeezes her eyes shut and buries her head in
Karen’s shoulder.KAREN
There, you happy now?SARAH
Just hurry the fuck up!They take a few more steps down. Karen holds the light in front of
her.KAREN
Josh! She moves the flashlight left, then right. A shadow now appears on
the floor, extending from the room to the right.Karen smiles at Sarah, nods and winks.
KAREN
(mouths)
Bingo.Sarah sighs, relieved. She leans in and whispers in Karen’s ear.
SARAH
I don’t feel like making out
anymore. As Karen listens, her face pales and her eyes go wide. A SLOPPY
GURGLING comes from behind Sarah. Off Karen’s expression,
Sarah’s eyes get hollow and she slowly turns to see what Karen is
looking at.Her mouth forms a scream and both girls turn back to the basement
door. Sarah is still glued to Karen’s arm!KAREN
Let go of me!Karen pushes Sarah away, and Sarah grasps desperately for the rail.
Karen raises her leg and jams her heel into Sara’s abdomen,
launching her down the stairs.Sarah cries out and Karen makes for the door again.
Sarah’s cries are muffled. It sounds like she’s being smothered,
suffocated. She gasps, goes for a scream, and then chokes. This plays
on repeat as Karen stays focused on the door.A hand reaches up from below the stairs and grabs her ankle, pulling
her down, between two steps. Her gown tears. Her right leg comes
through the opening, and her left leg stays up top with a SNAP! She
cries out in anguish. She screams and drops her phone. It lands at Josh’s feet, flashlight
pointing upward, shining on his bloody face and ripped open torso.Sarah’s cries have quelled and Josh looks up at her; arm outstretched,
hand gripping her ankle. His mouth moves almost mechanically as he looks up at her Something
forces him to speak in an anguished whisper.JOSH
Karen…Karen is frozen, petrified. A scream refusing to leave her mouth as she
only gulps in air.The stairs creak behind her. She tries to turn, frantic, but Josh holds her
in place. A slimy wet cord snakes around her neck and she grabs for it.It squeezes and tightens. Karen gasps, and squirms.
Finally, she is pulled through the stairs.
The flashlight shines up at her body, dangling just inches off the ground.
Face to face with Josh. She dies, squirming and grabbing at the cord,
staring into his dead and bloody face. -
Tony McBride’ Level 2 Horror Emotion Scene.
What I learned doing this assignment is that I can learn more about three new emotions to enhance my horror.
<b align=”center”>Lesson 11: Level 2 Horror Emotions
ASSIGNMENT
Write a scene that uses all three of these horror emotions.
1. Look through your Act 2 scenes and pick one that you would like to write through all three emotions. It very likely will be a scene where some kind of horror action begins.
The complainer woman is killed.
2. Brainstorm the scene to emphasize the Level 2 emotions and write it.
FEAR: The complainer woman runs with friends but is trapped inside the basement by herself.
SUSPENSE: The woman is scared by a mannequin that she thought was a real human.
DREAD: The woman has to cross a pit but falls in and dies.

ASSIGNMENT 11 – NADIA’S LEVEL 2 HORROR EMOTION SCENE
(Title: “GRAHAMSTOWN”)
What I learned from this assignment: I learned which horror emotions fit best in each act so that to intensify the horror experience.
PS: In this case, I couldn’t find a scene fitting these 3 emotions but I found it in MIDPOINT…
MIDPOINT—THE MONSTER IS WORSE THAN WHAT WE THOUGHT:
EXT – OLD AGE HOME – DAWN
A storm is breaking over the grounds.
INT – OLD AGE HOME
The atmosphere has changed and there is a perceptible effervescence among the residents; the nursing staff is edgy as incidents multiply to patients showing bad tempter and acts of violence as well as verbal abuse. The residents also start showing signs of moving in groups and display cunning abilities.
Anna carries on displaying kindness and patience while Stephen is wary and only keeps volunteering to be close to Anna, especially as she is showing more and more interest towards Matthias.
Something is going on in one of the reception room and the residents are blocking the entry to the nursing staff, saying they have a surprise for Anna. It’s Anna’s 21st birthday and she chose not to tell anyone but someone at the old age home check out throw the staff records and found out.
A surprise party is organised by some of the residents in her honour; when she finds out about it she is touched and walks into the reception room with tears of gratitude in her eyes. As she progresses through the room, she notices a huge birthday cake in the centre with 21 red candles; she searches the room and realizes that there is no staff member present at the exception of the female Director of the establishing and the residents; she searches for Stephen and sees his face behind the glass door, he looks scared. She notices some residents standing in front of the door, a chair leaning under the handle to prevent it from opening; she realizes something is wrong as everyone around her starts chanting ‘Happy Birthday!’
She looks all around and sees evil smiles getting closer.
Anna kneels down, closes her eyes and STARTS PRAYING; residents loom over her, unsettled on what to do, then one stretches his hand towards her long golden fair, stroking gently as if in awe;
A chair COMES CRASHING THE GLASS DOOR and Stephen storms inside, gets to Anna and carries her in his arms through the crows of flaying arms and chants.
THE HORROR EMOTIONS IN THE SCENE:
Fear: Some of the residents in the old age home are gathering and acting increasingly aggressively and there is an ominous atmosphere about the place, like the presence of evil.
Suspense: There’s something secret happening in the reception room; something organised by the elderly and they are guarding the room and will only let Anna in; it’s a surprise party for her birthday but there’s definitely something not quite right going on.
Dread: Anna enters the room and soon is surrounded by a mob and the door is blocked. She can feel the danger looming everywhere but she doesn’t scream for help; instead, she chose to kneel and pray.
Knowing Anna’s faith, when Stephen sees her, he knows she sees God as her only salvation; he then has no resort but play the role of the hero by crashing the glass door and storming in, at the peril of his life!
SCENE WRITEN AS 1st DRAFT TO INCLUDE THE 3 EMOTIONS:
EXT – OLD AGE HOME – DAWN
A storm is breaking over the grounds, making the place look ominous; cloud are rolling in the anthracite sky, announcing imminent storm and danger.
INT – OLD AGE HOME
The atmosphere has changed – there is an perceptible effervescence, like a bees nest buzz, among the residents; they move faster, more eagerly, moving into small packs, eyes darting everywhere, grins on all faces. The nursing staff, mostly young folks, seem edgy and trying to get out of the way as incidents multiply: patients showing unusual signs of bad tempter, small acts of violence against objects as well as verbal abuse with a profusion of swearing. The residents display cunning abilities mixed with childish behaviour.
Anna reacts by displaying accrued kindness and patience, while Stephen is wary and keeps his eyes on Anna as he noticed most old folks following her around and staring at her in a disturbing way when she is not watching, as well as whispering after her; he is more and more concerned for her safety and decides to hang around.
Something is going on in the main reception room: a group of residents are blocking the entrance to the nursing staff under the pretense that they are organizing a surprise party for Anna. It’s Anna’s 21st birthday but the fact that she hasn’t told anyone at work and that the residents know about it is worrisome and shows that they have been overly interested in her, checking staff records, showing their cunning abilities.
When Anna finds out about the surprise party, she has mixed emotion: surprised and touched at first, she will soon become wary as she will connect the dots and link the disappearances and murders of people in their 21st year with the fact that she will be celebrating her 21st birthday!
As Anna enters the room: she notices the huge birthday cake and the 21 blood red candles on it; when she realizes that she is the only staff member present in the room, at the exception of the female Director, and that the residents are surrounding her while chanting, peering and whispering all around her, she searches for support and sees Stephen’s terrified face on the other side of the glass door hopelessly trying to tell her something, his lips moving, saying the words ‘GET OUT!; She then notices the residents standing in front of the door, a chair blocking its entry; she imminent danger looms over as they start chanting ‘Happy Birthday!’
Evil grins all around, getting closer, arms slowly lifting, towards her face;
Anna kneels down, closes her eyes and STARTS TO PRAY;
The residents loom over her, slightly unsettled at first, then one stretches a hand and begins stroking her long golden fair hair, as if to pacify a child, looking in awe at her beautiful angel face… then, the following scene happens as fast as the lightning that broke through the sky and thunder that echoes in the room: someone reaping her dress open, someone forces her to lie down, another falls on top of her, forcing her legs open as he unzips and grunts like an animal and rolls off her so quickly that it makes the all horrible scene unreal; during the whole time, Anna kept her eyes shut and never stop praying.
A chair COMES CRASHING THE GLASS DOOR and Stephen storms inside, shouting, kicking and fighting his way through; he grabs into his arms a half-naked and shocked sobbing Anna.

ROB’S LEVEL 2 HORROR EMOTION SCENE
What I learned: I learned that fear, suspense and dread are level 2 horror emotions and generally show up in act 2 of your screenplay. They serve as a stair step to more drastic emotions in act 3.
This scene takes just after Act 2 kicks off. The Investigators are conducting their first paranormal experiment, in the bedroom of a man dying of terminal cancer.
INT. MASTER BEDROOM – BEACH HOUSE – NIGHT
Abby and Noelle prepare for an EVP session. One last equipment check before they start. A polaroid camera hangs from Noelle’s neck.
Al sits in a chair next to Jerry’s bed. Jerry’s weak and confused as he points a boney finger at the investigators.
JERRY
Huh? Wha’s this now? Who are they?AL
Shhh. These people are here to help us, pops. Remember? They’re just going to run some tests.JERRY
Some tests?AL

ABBY
What is your name?FLASH. Noelle takes a polaroid and stuffs it in a pocket.
NOELLE
How old are you?Al stares at the ceiling, ready for anything. Sweat forms on Jerry’s brow.
ABBY
Give us a sign of your presence––BOOM. BOOM. BOOM, from beneath the floor boards.
Abby and Noelle are startled, but keep their composure.
Jerry lays back and closes his eyes. His breath comes fast and labored.
JERRY
Make ’em stop.Al pulls a blanket up and comforts his father.
ABBY
Make a note, that was not us pounding.
(into radio)
Tommy, did you record that?TOMMY (O.C.)
(on radio)
We got it, boss.FLASH. Noelle takes another polaroid.
NOELLE
Why are you here? The floor boards CREAK like they are flexing upwards. Abby points to the floor.
NOELLE
What do you want? The back door slowly opens. The room is deathly silent. Noelle looks to Abby.
JERRY
Oh no. Please, God…no…Al dabs Jerry’s head with a cool wash cloth.
ABBY
Do you enjoy hurting Jerry? Do you enjoy hurting this family?!The lights of the room flicker wildly, then cut out. Noelle reaches for a flashlight, but Abby stops her.
ABBY
Look! From the doorway, a green ball of light manifests and shoots across the ceiling. Followed by another. Then another.
Noelle snaps of a series of Polaroids.
Abby and Noelle stare up in wonder as the room fills with glowing orbs of energy.
ABBY
Are you seeing this!?Noelle is stunned.
NOELLE
It’s beautiful.AL
What is it?!Jerry stares up from his bed. Terrified. A tear falls down his cheek.

Ellie storms into the room.
ELLIE
(screams)
Stop hurting my grandpa! Please, stop! The mist explodes in a shower of electric sparks. The group shields their eyes from the sudden brightness.
For a moment, the room is calm. Ellie runs to her father.
AL
Is it over?Abby shakes her head. She feels nothing. Before she can speak, there’s a soft tremor. It grows bigger and bigger until the entire house SHAKES like an earthquake. Then it stops.
The electrical equipment and lightbulbs all EXPLODE at once. The house loses power.
INT. MOBILE LAB – RV – NIGHT
Tommy loses audio and video on the bank of monitors.
TOMMY
Holy shit! What the hell was that?
(into radio)
Abby? Noelle? There’s no response. Tommy panics.
TOMMY
I gotta go in there? I gotta go in there. He grabs a handheld camera and bolts out the door.
INT. LIVING ROOM – BEACH HOUSE – NIGHT
Tommy enters the house and runs down the hallway to the master bedroom. Barbara waits by the door.
BARBARA
Is everything okay? We heard an explosion…Tommy pushes through the door.
INT. MASTER BEDROOM – BEACH HOUSE
Tommy finds Al and Ellie attending to Jerry on the bed.
JERRY
(crying)
Please, just let me die.Abby and Noelle approach Tommy, shaking with excitement and eagerness.
NOELLE
(whispers)
Holy shit, ya’ll. Tell me you got that, Tommy?Tommy looks around at his smoking equipment.
TOMMY
Yeah. Up till the power surge. I’ve never seen anything like it.Abby shakes him with excitement.
ABBY
(whispers)
This is it, Tommy! This could make our careers!TOMMY
But at what cost?Abby, Noelle and Tommy look over to Jerry, who looks weak and frail. Tears stream down his cheeks.

Deborah’s Level 2 Horror Emotion Scene
Doing this assignment I learned (I hope) that you can use your environment to help create the second tier of emotion. For suspense, this scene depends on the previous scene combined with this one, where they find the lab destroyed and discover that Mae’s husband was stationed here. fear is when the monster appears and dread is when we’re waiting to find out if the monster has left or not.
INT. LAB – DAY
The lab has been destroyed, but there is no blood like in the other rooms of the compound. Mae looks at the mess and her eyes tear up, but she gets a hold of herself and enters with Ian, Eboni and the robot.
Mae clears debris off of a table, which is a computer.
Mae
(to robot)
Do you think you can get anything from this?
The robot doesn’t answer, but simply plugs in. Eboni and Mae talk in the background while Ian looks through the debris in the lab and finds a picture of Mae with a man.
Ian
Hey, is this you?
Mae looks at the pictures and swallows hard against the rush of tears.
Mae
That was taken in our 10th anniversary.
Eboni
So Dr. Crow…
Mae
Is my husband.
Ian and Eboni share a look, not knowing what to say.
Robot
Something is coming.
Suddenly an inhuman scream slices through the air, and something big hits the wall of the lab, collapsing it. The Robot grabs Ian and Eboni, then blocks the wall from falling on them. The metal wall is bent and twisted, but the Robot holds it on its back as it arches over the two children.
The monster walks over the damage into the room. Mae is plastered against the opposite wall, staring in shock and horror.
The monster looks like a giant spider with claws. But the most disturbing part is that the head of Mae’s husband is mounted to the body, and it sees and recognizes her. It speaks her name, but it mushy and you can barely make it out.
Husband
Mae.
Mae begins to shake in horror. Then she screams and screams and screams. The monster scoops her up in his claw as she continues to scream. It brings her up to the head and the head once again tries to say her name.
Husband
Mae
Eboni covers her ears and begins to scream as well, though Ian tries desperately to make her stop. The monster turns toward them. Eboni stops screaming and both she and Ian go as far as they can away from the opening, which means they can no longer see the monster.
They hear it scuttling around, looking for where the scream came from. They hear Mae’s fall silent, and Eboni’s eyes go wide as Ian tries to keep her calm. There’s a long period of quiet, and just when we think maybe it’s gone, the husband head is in the opening looking at them.
The robot stands up thowing off the wall and telling them to run. Ian and Eboni scramble over the wall to the outside, passing the military man who come in shooting. The monster screams and two of the men are horribly killed. But Sly and Andre are able to take out two of its legs, and it runs off into the trees behind the compound, dragging two legs, with Mae unconscious or dead in its claw.

Patrick Malone Level 2 Horror Emotion Scene
What I learned was to pace the levels of horror so that they increase with each act. While writing tis scene new ideas came to me based on the emotions of fear, suspense and dread.
EXT. FOREST – NIGHT
It’s been two hours since Clark’s group was attacked and tied up by Grant’s men. Tammy is shredding the rope binding her wrists by rubbing against a tree.
Ollie shimmies close to Bill and gets his fingers on Bill’s knife. He cuts the ropes freeing his hands and kicks loose the ankle ropes. Then he frees Bill.Tammy gets up and frees Clark.
EMMETT
Hey, don’t forget me.
OLLIE
Forget you? We should just leaveyou there to rot.
TAMMY
You’re why we’re in this mess.EMMETT
But I – –
TAMMY
Shut your mouth,
OLLIE Cut him loose. Bill cuts Emmet’s ropes, Emmett slowly stands. Clark is frantically combing the ground.
BILL
The map’s gone. That neanderthal swiped it.OLLIE
Max Sedgwick.
(to Emmett)
And your pal Grant made off with my rifle.CLARK
Come on. We got to get the map back. Let’s go.BILL
Good idea.
OLLIE
Hold on. Bad idea. We’re not going after them in the dark.CLARK
We need the map.
OLLIE
They’re two hours ahead of us. We’re going to camp here and start out at daybreak.Frustrated, Clark kicks the ground.
EXT. FOREST CAMPSITE – NIGHT
Four small tents are set up. All except Emmett sit around a camp fire. He sits alone.
CLARK
At least we had this fire.
TAMMY
And the insects have left Bill alone.
OLLIE
(chuckles)
I don’t see any snakes cuddling up to him either.
BILL
That’s a blessing.
OLLIE
So guys, without the map are we able to carry on?CLARK
There’s important information on it.BILL
I have a lot of it up here.
Bill points to his head.
CLARK
I’ll feel a lot better with it in hand.
TAMMY
We’ll get it back from those Northern bandits.CLARK
Those Yankee assholes aren’t going to stop me from finding that gold.TAMMY
You hear that?
There is a rustle in the bushes.
CLARK
What?
More rustling.
BILL
Something’s out there.
Clark grabs a big stick and stands. Ollie takes out his knife and takes a few steps toward the sound. Suddenly something bumps him. Startled, he yells and swipes with the knife. Emmett stumbles out of the brush.
CLARK
Emmett.
OLLIE
I could of cut you.CLARK
You scared the piss out us.EMMETT
Yeah, I had to pee.Tammy struts to him and slaps him.
TAMMY
What’s this?
She takes a liquor bottle from him.
TAMMY (CONT’D)
On top of everything, you’re drunk.OLLIE
Go sack out. Get
Ollie pushes him. Emmett staggers a few yards and crawls into his sleeping bag.
OLLIE (CONT’D)
We should all get some sleep.BILL
Let’s call it a day
Clark wacks the stick against a tree.
CLARK
Yeah, some day. What a disaster. They head to their tents.
LATER:
Emmett is half asleep. A movement in the forest wakens him. He looks around. He wrinkles his nose and coughs. A foul smell. Then he sees two glowing green orbs several yards out in the forest. He rubs his eyes. The orbs drift away.INT. TAMMY’S TENT – NIGHT
The pungent odor awakens her. She gags. She hears a distant terrifying shriek.
TAMMY
Holy shit.
She buries herself in her sleeping bag.
EXT. FOREST CAMPSITE – DAY
Morning. They’ve broken camp and are about to leave.TAMMY
I know what I heard Clark. An unnatural screech.CLARK
Did anybody hear some kind of scream, a shriek during the night.OLLIE
I was dead asleep.BILL
Most likely a nightingale. They can be loud.CLARK
Tammy you’re famous for your imagination.TAMMY
Damn it. It was unnerving.EMMETT
There was something strange out there.BILL
Yeah, you.
EMMETT
There were like eyes. Glowing green big eyes.BILL
Oh, you saw a UFO. Makes sense that’s what a drunk would see.OLLIE
So you heard the screech?EMMETT
It was God-awful. But it was those eyes creeped me out.CLARK
Drunk and totally delusional. All but Tammy laugh. They hike forward.
EXT. FOREST – DAY
They come upon a strange mark carved into an old tree.CLARK Hey, this is good.
OLLIE What is it?
CLARK
A symbol. The Confederates used them to mark their trails.OLLIE
So we’re on the right path?BILL
Yup. This was on the map.OLLIE
Fantastic.
TAMMY
Good going Clark.
They hear something crunching through the vegetation. Something large. Ollie hold s up his hand to halt the group.
More movement in the brush. Then moans and groans.
BILL
What is it? Can you see anything.?A breeze picks up.
OLLIE
Ugh. What is that?
TAMMY
That’s the smell.
CLARK
What are you talking about?TAMMY
From last night when I heard those sounds.CLARK
It’s disgusting.
EMMETT
I smelled it when those eyes appeared.More moaning rustling. Then they see it. About fifty feet ahead a figure crawls from the bushes.
OLLIE
Who the hell?
They walk slowly toward the figure. It continues to crawl and groan. Ollie yells. He almost steps on a severed arm.
TAMMY
On my God.
CLARK
What the hell is happening?Torn pieces of bloody clothing and a torn apart backpack litter their path. Then the figure struggles to its feet. It clasps a tree and trudges into thick vegetation.
OLLIE
We have to help him.CLARK
There’s no way I’m going any closer.BILL
That stench is getting worse.Ollie takes a few steps. More rustling and moaning.
TAMMY
We don’t know what’s in there.Ollie steps into the brush and out of site.
CLARK
No Ollie. Wait.
They hear a horrid shriek. Tammy throws up. The others freeze in place for several seconds.
EMMETT
We got to get in there. He hurries into the brush. Bill reluctantly follows. They come upon Ollie crouched over a man. He has been badly beaten. A missing arm and skin torn from half his face. The three men are in shock.
OLLIE
He’s one of Grant’s crew.EMMETT
Victor, ah, Victor Lennox. Shit.BILL What did this?
EMMETT
A wild boar maybe.
OLLIE
They’re known to have done worse. We’re too far from the lakes to be a gator.BILL
We should tell the others.OLLIE
Right.
The three men hike back. Ollie scans the ground. Then he sees something odd. A few footprints. Huge three-toed clawed footprints. There was no wild boar.

Robert R. Smith’s Level 2 Horror Emotions Scene
What I learned doing this assighment is…? To build emotions into the scene, setting, and dialogue.
Film Title: The Toreph.
About the title: Toreph is singular of Teraphim, “Household gods.” They were the mummified heads in the ancient Near East that were used for necromancy and divination after a gold plate with the engraved name of a demon was inserted into its mouth.
A scene using Level 2 Horror emotions
MIDPOINT: The monster is worse than we thought!
Full
pursuit by the killer AND terrorized.INT THE CAVE/TOMB OF CUSHAN THE DOUBLY-EVIL DAY
Hassan has just killed himself with Bob Barton’s gun, so that he can go follow his brother’s apparition to the afterlife to which he beckoned and called him to come.
Barton shoots at the Toreph skull but the demon within the skull, Azazel. Blocks the bullet with the same kind of invisibile shield .
The ricocheting bullet is controlled by the Toreph (Azazel) and is in a trajectory toward Kendrick and mortally wounds him. Kendrick.
TOREPH
Weapons are useless against me. I am Azazel,
I taught humanity the use of weapons. Of course
I devised how to protect myself against all of them.
Serves you right for what you attempted.
Kendrick lies down, mortally wounded. Barton, Ned, and Kaitlyn gather around him.
KENDRICK
I regret ever having dragged all of you into
this horror. Now I fear for what this demon may
devise against you.
KAITLYN
Dr. Kendrick, it was the gold plate that activated
Azazel in the skull. What if the gold plate was
extracted from his mouth. Wouldn’t that expel
the demon?
KENDRICK
I think so.
TOREPH
I think not, Doctor Kendrick.
BARTON
Dr. Kendrick, I didn’t mean to shoot you.
KENDRICK
It was Azazel, not you, that directed
the bullet toward me. You are guilty
of nothing. I am guilty of bringing you
to this evil place.
Kendrick dies.
Kaitlyn looks at the Toreph and screams..
Slithering around the skull from one eye socket to another is the Cerastes Horned Viper. It slithers out of the skull and coils around it. It opens its mouth and speaks.
TORPEH
Try to destroy me now.
BARTON
That is a Cerastes Horned Viper. Rare and
super-poisonous. Ned, watch out.
NED
I know that you’re the snake expert.
But that is no more a real snake than
Hussein’s apparition was Hussein
KAITLYN
I hate snakes. One of you has to kill it.
NED
We’ll just kill another one of us when the bullet ricochets
directed by Azazel? Lett me try something.
Ned grabs the shepherd’s staff of Hassan and addresses the Toreph.
Ned turns toward the Toreph and the snake wrapped around it.
NED
Azazel;. I carry the serpent staff of Amun.
TOREPH
Approach me, emissary of the great god
of Thebes.
KAITLYN
(With dread.)
Be careful, Ned.
Ned walks right through the invisible shield.
NED
You shall do me no harm. I call upon Apophis
who shatters creation. I am Ptah of Memphis who wields
the serpent staff, and rides on the backs of crocodiles.
You shall do me no harm.
TOREPH
No harm shall come to you.
Ned rushes the Toreph. Grabs he skull. The skull screams, “You deceiver.” “Let me go.”
You are Othniel the Judge, my enemy.
Ned pulls the gold plate from the Toreph’s mouth and the Toreph goes silent. The invisible shields vanish. They hear it, including the invisible block against the cave entrance.
BARTON
You did it, buddy!
KAITLYN
Thank God!
NED
I studied the Egyptian magical papyri.
Magic is his language, so, I thought I’d
speak it.

Pamela’s Level 2 Horror Emotion Scene
What I learned doing this assignment is…?
Outlining the difference between fear, suspense, and dread makes a world of difference in creating a taunt scene that ramps up the anxiety.
Brainstorm the scene to emphasize the Level 2 emotions and write it.
Sybil and Carmel are talking and checking on the building to make sure it is secure. Lights flicker as the electricity is spotty as the storm rages outside. They both hear on the walkie talkie a sheriff deputy reminding the evacuation facilities to be on the lookout for a gang of looters causing mayhem at other evacuation facilities. Sybil and Carmel get worried. A window shatters as a branch crashes through it in a room up the hall. Deciding it was best to check the front doors, they stumble upon the exit doors locked with chains. Sybil and Carmel check all of the exit doors and find all of them chained.
Sybil and Carmel go back to the cafeteria to confront LaPierre. He denies giving the order to chain the door and blames it on Marie. Sybil and Carmel rush to find Marie who was in charge of securing the gym.
The enter the gym. It’s dark and the sounds of branches thumping the boarded windows rings throughout. The fine stream of light guides them to the electrical closet. They are unable to see much beyond the round glow of the flashlight, complaining about the absurdity of locking everyone in regardless of the potential for looting. Sybil flips the breaker and from inside the room they can see a set of lights on the far-right wall come on. As they walk back into the gym, they see a terrible sight and begin to scream.
Marie is found in the gym facing a boarded window with bloody scratch marks in the wooden boards, her face contorted, eyes gone (laying at her knees) with an open mouth midscream. She is the key holder of the chains and is the only one with the combination to the safe holding the keys.
Several people in the cafeteria hear the screams and come running. Upon seeing the body, Clara is upset and panicked but remains rational under the conditions. Sybil is confused and gets her phone out to call the police but there is no signal. Carmel appears overwhelmed and frightened by the sight of a dead body. Potter is dumbfounded and confused.
Coach Ogilvy comes from the locker room to see what the commotion is about. Sybil and Carmel demand to know how long he had been in the locker room and if he heard anything at all. When he sees what happened to Marie, he appears visibly upset but Sybil and Carmel are wondering how he didn’t hear anything. Ogilvy snaps back as to why Sybil and Carmel hadn’t noticed the deceased Marie when they walked into the gym.
