Brenda Clarke IRONY
Brainstorming ideas is coming along slowly and I realise I have to give this more thought as I need to develop the process in order to get more involved with the characters and what is happening. So far, I feel I am getting some good ideas but will only be for the first few episodes but the more I get into this, hopefully the more ideas will come to me. Fingers Crossed!
Assignment #1 Riverdale epsiode 11. To Riverdale and Back Again.
Overall irony is Jughead’s narration, saying that if you scratch beneath the surface Riverdale is really not such a nice place to live and that perhaps there is some darker/evil elements that lurk in the town.
Character Irony would be Veronica is now being an “investigator” trying to find out the truth of her fathers involvement with the Blossoms, as her dad is a convicted felon. Alice, Betty’s mum acts as though butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth and we realise that Mr Jones knows more about her past etc.
Situational Irony was whilst at the high school dance everyone enjoying themselves the Sheriff was raiding Mr. Jones’ bungalow where he found a revolver in a tin box. The dance is disrupted when they find out Jughead’s dad has been arrested for Jason’s murder!
Assignment #2
My show Convicts:
IRONY
Elliot wealthy aristocratic, yet has sexual relationship with sailor. Is he ready to renounce his heritage in order to reunite with Richard?
Harriet, appears to be a hard working woman, well liked in the district (knows horses well) but when Rosie goes missing she is willing to do what ever it takes to get her back. Including doing a robbery for criminals.
Rosie gets involved in a crime because of her sister, she really didn’t want to have anything to do with her, now she is going to be shipped off to Australia.
Richard is a handsome sailor who helps Elliot escape the night of the arrest.
Irony is that Elliot is weak and unsure of what to do, he hits the bottle and depression whereas Harriet, steps up and takes action to find out what happened to Rosie.
Elliot and Harriet both hide their homosexuality even though they come from very different backgrounds, their secrets unit them.
Were Elliot and Richard set up, why was the Molly house raided that night when they were there? Could Richard have a jealous mate and dobbed them into the authorities? Perhaps this sailor mate could have found a note in Richards room from Elliot confirming his adoration and looking forward to catching up at the Molly house?
Mrs Wright suspicious about her daughters changed behaviour, she neglects her work with the horses. Ferrier has to take over whilst Harriet goes investigating.
Otto Edwards, Elliot’s father, badgers him to pull himself together. Sister sticks up for her brother – don’t be so hard on him. Perhaps she somehow seeks her brothers confidence and eventually he trusts her to reveal why he is “lost/troubled”.

SU Bingeworthy Lesson 11 Irony
Griff’s Creating Irony!
What I learned doing this assignment: Irony can be injected into the situation and characters to add depth and take the story in unexpected directions.
Assignment 1
Stranger Things Ironies
Situational Irony:
Hawkins is a typical, quiet small town but has a terrible secret.
Character Ironies:
Hopper is supposed to be the law but he will break the law to get to the bottom of what’s going on.
Joyce is acting crazy since Will’s disappearance but she is the only one seeing clearly.
Mike seems like the leader of the nerdy science geeks but he is impetuous and makes rash decisions.
Dustin appears to be the most immature of the boys but he has wisdom and analytical thinking.
Nancy wants to be one of the cool girls but she is not comfortable being the slutty girlfriend.
Steve appears to be the strutting BMOC but he is really more sensitive than that.
Will is the most innocent and vulnerable of the four boys, but when he returns from being “missing” he is channeling a monster from the Upside Down.
Jonathan is the socially awkward outlier with surprising talent and courage.
Eleven show up as a frightened and vulnerable child but she is a dangerous weapon.
Assignment 2
THE LAST STRAW Ironies
Situational Irony:
Neighbors Stephanie and Brad are single parents dealing with challenging children, but Brad has a mysterious history, Marcey has a secret life, Stephanie has a hidden agenda and Randy and Todd are walking contradictions.
Character Ironies:
Stephanie plays single mom, working a demeaning writing gig while waiting for the chance to break a big story.
Brad is a nerdy music teacher keeping his celebrity past a secret.
Randy is small and angry but has the talent and ability of an athlete.
Todd seems big and dumb but is actually smart and has taken defense training from Brad on the sly.
Marcey appears to be an out-of-control party girl but is secretly an activist helping migrants across the border.

Lisa’s Creating Irony
What I learned doing this assignment is that there are lots of different ways to create irony, and that it increases intrigue when there are lots of inconsistencies in the characters.

Elaina is a goody-two shoes who is dating a vampire.
Damon kills for fun, but he saved Elaina.
Damon and Stefan are together all the time and the hate each other, but they also love each other.

<hr>ASSIGNMENT 2: Your Show
Jane the Vegan situational Irony:
a vampire who is a vegan

Heather is really into vampires, but doesn’t know that Jane is one.
Heather is outwardly pretty dumb, but very creative.
Jane is upset about the people farms, even though she kills people.
The O.C. vampires like to use the argument that they are more highly evolved humans, so that’s why they have the right to eat them.
The O.C. vampires say it’s in their nature to hunt, but all their blood is packaged.
The vampires raise human babies that they turn into vampires when they come of age to appear normal.
Vampires who have super powers, but they’re super lazy.
Vampire hunters who get turned into vampires
People who try to become vampires by working their way up the level of masonry, only to find out that their devotion leads them to become a vampire, or die.
People at the human farms don’t know that they are food, but they are obsessed about their appearance, etc.
Vampires who hunt get hunted most often because they take the most risks
Vegan activists who scream in people’s faces for eating meat, but then they get turned, and have to eat blood to survive, and they have to find someone new to judge.
O.C. vampires keeping the streets “clean” but with a dirty business of human slavery

Luc’s creating irony!
What I learned doing this assignment is how much irony is sought for when writing a good series script, and on so many different levels. I thought irony was coming from the personality of the writer and didn’t see it as an objective tool. I’m astounded, excited and very much eager to use it as much as I can.
ASSIGNMENT 1: The Americans
Watch the next episode of your Example Show and notice where irony shows up in this show.Unexpected lines: When Elisabeth (KGB agent undercover in US) meets with her KGB contact (that she has beaten up in the previous episode because she had them tortured, her and co-agent/husband), KGB Agent says she apologizes for the way she treated them. We expect Elisabeth to acknowledge her excuses and apologize. So when she start’s saying she’s sorry, we expect « for beating the hell out of her too ». But instead she says she’s sorry she didn’t kill her. Irony continues as the KGB contact replies « Better luck next time ». The irony is not gratuitous. It states the fact that those two women despise each other, but will have to continue working together in a dangerous business where mutual trust is crucial.
Situational irony: Philip (co-KGB agent and husband with Elisabeth) has to meet with his former lover Irina (20 years ago in Russia) also KGB agent now (but in Canada). They obviously still feel a lot for each other. Right when she tells him that he is the father of her 20 y/o son, Philip has to bash her face so she can show real bruises to prove the rape they are trying to pin on another character.
Plot irony: Counterintelligence agent Stan blackmails Nina to have her betray the KGB. He is making her do very dangerous things. He’s a true American, she’s a true Russian. They should hate each other. They fall in love.
Situational irony: It is right when Philip learns he has a son from Irina, former love in Russia, that Elisabeth calls him in the middle of the night to tell him she misses him (something she never did before). And it is right after this call that we see Irina was in his bed all along.
Situational irony: When Philip comes home after turning down Irina’s offer to defect and run away with him, he asks his children if anyone missed him while he was away. « You’re very funny » is the answer he gets, like they’re so sure he’ll always be there.
This one is a running irony throughout the show. One of the difficulty the couple has to deal with is raising their child like an ordinary American family, in oblivion to the fact their parents are secret agent from the KGB, conspiring against America. When the child express how dull their life is, it is ironical, because they are actually in the middle of extreme danger and action, and also because the fact they feel this way is living proof of Philip and Elisabeth efficiency as secret agents.
There is also some kind of irony, at the end of the episode, where Elisabeth and Philip start a new kind of relationship, where they both agree to go from a contrived marriage into a real romantic relationship, she asks him, as some kind of way to seal this new era, to tell her the truth: did something happened between him and Irina? He says nothing happened, although we’ve seen the opposite. The irony is that this new relationship, based on mutual trust, starts with the biggest lie.
ASSIGNMENT 2: Limbo
Look back through your previous assignments and find at least 20 different situations or character components that you could go opposite to create irony.1 – The autistic student has this « super power » that enables him to hear what is going on in Limbo. But he rejects it. Whenever he is surrounded by family members or medical staff, who would give anything to communicate with someone in a coma, while we see him fighting his power, I should get irony.
2 – When Rocker doesn’t want to date Jacqueline because she is half his age, we know that in fact she is twice his age, but if she told him, he would still reject her, but this time for being too old…
3 – Whenever a character in Limbo acts or talks as if he had a future.
4 – When a character in Limbo wants to die, someone on the other side tries to save them, but when they want to live, someone on the other side (maybe the same one) wants now to unplug them.
5 – In Limbo, Jacqueline has a young body, but her mind is not totally ridden of Alzheimer. When ever we see her behaving like a teen, while also showing glimpses of Alzheimer, we get irony.
6 – As Jacqueline is about to wake up on the other side, people in Limbo congratulate her, believing she is destined to have a long and happy life, but we know she is really going to face a short one, with old age and Alzheimer.
7 – Machines showing there is no life left in someone, while we see them in perfect health in Limbo.
8 – When someone from Limbo tries to influence someone on the other side, with an unexpected opposite result.
9 – We know that the nurse Veronica gets high whenever there is a rush in a life and death situation (like she’s on drugs). While everyone in the service is highly stressed, we see the smile on her face that tells us she’s beyond orgasm.
10 – When the autistic student is controlled by someone from Limbo, he starts acting opposite to his normal behaviour.
11 – When Rocker starts kissing Jacqueline and doesn’t dare go to far sexually. She tries to act the way she would have when she was young and shy, but at one point can’t resist behaving like the experienced woman she really is.
12 – The autistic student has an incredible memory about anything (he’s a living medical bible) but his mind gets blank when under stress, which is a problem when he acts as a messenger for the Limbo. They have to sooth him from Limbo, so he can remember what to do.
13 – Jacqueline’s grand daughter is a young ballerina. To save her life the medical staff has to amputate her legs. While she lies crippled on her bed, she can still dance wonderfully in Limbo.
14 – A relative visiting a patient in coma, saying nice things to him while deliberately physically hurting him.
15 – A relative visiting a patient in coma, saying horrible things to him while gently taking care of him physically.
16 – Jacqueline’s husband hiding from the staff and secretly unplugging her (as a supreme act of love for someone who wanted to die) while in Limbo Jacqueline doesn’t want to die anymore and insults him.
17 – Dr Levi has a brain trouble that puts him in a coma. He becomes a patient in his own service, where his enemy doctor gets to take care of him.
18 – Someone having sex with a patient, unseen by the staff, but unaware that in Limbo the room is full of people witnessing the scene, which makes the patient, who is also in Limbo, terribly uneasy (although his body on the bed is responding extremely well…)
19 – Trying to stop a nurse from unplugging a machine by tickling her from Limbo. It is supposed to be a solemn moment, but she can’t stop giggling.
20 – Someone in Limbo takes part in a conversation, although they can’t hear what he says.
21 – Someone is bad mouthing about a patient in a coma. He does it over his bed, while the patient is watching him from Limbo (if it is a staff member they should have a really good reason, if not it is just not believable). Someone else tells him not to do it because it is disrespectful. He sneers back, « Sure, like he can hear me… » .

Frank’s Creating Irony, assignment 1: JESSICA JONES
What I learned doing this assignment is…
What I learned from noticing irony in JESSICA JONES is that the series is made much richer and more rewarding to watch because there are these levels of irony which a viewer can appreciate. It also makes the main character more engaging (though not necessarily likeable) because she has so much irony happening in her character profile. For example, Jessica Jones needs to be a hero but she often wants to be self-destructive and selfish. Trish Walker needs to feel like what she does matters, even though she has a radio show that reaches millions.
Assignment 1: IRONY IN JESSICA JONES, s01e09 – “AKA Sin Bin”
Jessica Jones is a private investigator who is good at uncovering people’s secrets and immoral behavior to get the truth to her clients. But she is terrible at getting to the truth of her own past experiences, like being unable to accept that the accident that killed her parents and brother wasn’t her fault. She also engaged in a lot of immoral and unethical behavior herself, like physically attacking people and extorting them to get what she wants.
Luke Cage’s wife was killed and he’s been sleeping with, and falling in love with, her murderer.
Kevin Killgrave uses his mind-control powers to compel women into having sex with him, but doesn’t even understand that he’s committing rape.
Trish Walker is the host of a popular and successful radio show who helps her listeners achieve empowerment, yet she feels completely powerless and ineffectual in helping her friend Jessica.
Will Simpson is a cop and morally-motivated former special ops soldier who was compelled to try and kill Trish Walker and Jessica Jones.
Jerri Hogarth is a high-powered corporate attorney who is cheating on the wife with the hot secretary – a typical storyline that we’ve seen (and maybe even experienced in real life) many times… except Jerri is a woman cheating on her lesbian relationship with another woman.
Jerri is also on opposite sides of the main story’s conflict from Killgrave, yet in this episode they are shown to be identical in their deviousness and willingness to go to any lengths to get what they want. There’s even a moment when Hogarth and Killgrave mirror each other’s body movements and both say, “Finally” when Jessica Jones returns to the facility were Killgrave is being kept prisoner.
The series is about women dealing with the aftermath of sexual assault, harassment, and abusive relationships, and how sometimes they cope by becoming harassers or abusive people themselves.
The series is also about how Jessica Jones is a hero, but often doesn’t act like one.

Frank’s Creating Irony, assignment 2: my TV show
What I learned doing this assignment is…
For my own show, I learned that I had naturally built in some irony into the character profiles and the situations. And by committing myself to follow the instructions and brainstorm at least 20 ironies, I was able to conjure up some more character and situational ironies. Some of them weren’t that good but some of them surprised me and made me think they have potential for me to build more interesting story ideas upon.
Assignment 2: Frank’s Show
Look back through your previous assignments and find at least 20 different situations or character components that you could go opposite to create irony.
Select the ones that work well for the show and share the character and situational ironies with us.
1.) Marjorie and Nelson: ideologically opposed yet both want the Free Peoples Nation to be strong and independent of the Union and other international powers.
2.) African-American nation that gained independence from a successful slave revolt yet is now a slave to other nations or corporate interests.
3.) Marjorie loves solving mysteries except the mystery of her own origin.
4.) Marjorie hates her adoptive parents and wants to be with her biological family, but her biological family doesn’t want to be with her and are actively trying to push her away.
5.) Marjorie believes in the power of truth, but must tell a huge lie that adversely affects her community in order to protect someone she cares about.
6.) Marjorie’s parents adopted her out of faith that they can be a good influence on the child, but they are the ones who benefit from Marjorie’s knowledge and insights.
7.) Racists fear that a country run by African-Americans would be a disaster, but the Free Peoples Nation is a better society than theirs.
8.) Marjorie is a genius at physics and engineering but her true love is in journalism, which she is terrible at.
9.) Marjorie is terrified that she is losing her mind, but the source of her terror will set her free.
10.) The Gulf community that Marjorie lives in depends on protecting the local environment for their food needs and to keep their local economies afloat, but they also are trying to woo the oil and gas company because it will bring in lots of money to the community – but at the price of destroying their environment.
11.) The abductor of Gwendolyn Caprice causes her family great anguish and heartbreak, but is himself a devoted family man when it comes to his own family.
12.) Gwendolyn wants to bring about the downfall of the oil and gas company because they are stealing people’s land and property, but she will also steal and lie and coerce in order to win.
