Don Thompson’s Act 4 resolution
What I learned is that this story was that I felt it important to add a dénouement to the end of Act 4 that expresses the spiritual nature of the story. I used the metaphor of Cathedral Bells to express this spiritual sentiment. In this way, the protagonist transcends the tragedy of the story.
EXT. MID-DECK – HOURS LATER
The Indomitable has lifted anchor and is drifting.
Suddenly, out of the fog, the bow of another ship appears with a bowhead that looks like the Virgin Mary.
Danskar, still holding Billy in his arms, looks up. He hears an almost DISEMBODIED VOICE.
VOICE
Ahoy!
Another SAILOR moves toward the bow.
SAILOR
Ahoy! We’ve been in battle and are drifting! Are you British?
VOICE
We are Spanish. Our Lady of Mercy!
DANSKAR
We need your help!
CUT TO:
EXT. OUR LADY OF MERCY – SPANISH FRIGATE – MINUTE LATER
The crew of ‘Our Lady of Mercy’ shuttles the wounded from the HMS Indomitable to her. Radcliff and Seymour are among those taken to the ship.
CUT TO:
EXT. OUR LADY OF MERCY – SAME TIME
Danskar leans against the railing of ‘Our Lady of Mercy’, taking it all in.
CUT TO:
EXT. MADRID, SPAIN – DAY
Danskar looks up to the edifice of a large Catholic Cathedral in Madrid.
He walks up the long stairways, and then into the Cathedral halls.
Inside, he stands for a moment and takes in the ornate Cathedral.
Danskar walks to the front of the cathedral, where a statue of the Virgin Mary looms over the pews.
He looks up at the Virgin and then walks to place an offering in the bowl.
His offering is the same small cross that he had given to Billy Budd and later removed after Billy’s hanging.
He looks up to the Virgin and crosses himself in the style of Catholics.
EXT. CATHEDRAL – SAME
TIMEOutside, the BELLS CHIME twelve noon.
The film ends with the beautiful sounds of the CATHEDRAL BELLS.
Danskar exits the Cathedral, and stands on the steps, looking up at the brilliant sun as the BELLS CONTINUE TO RING.
THE END

Charles Ferrell’s Act 4 Resolution
What I learned doing this assignment is to not only show the outer changes due to the inner changes but to reveal a hidden question to be answered.
ACT 4
INT.EMERGENCY ROOM – SAME TIME
HITOMI NAKAMURA
Morning Mr. Jenkins, you have couple of bags of fluid in you. You should be feeling a little better.
MR. JENKINS
I am, thank you much better, sorry to be trouble again
HITOMI NAKAMURA
No trouble at all, you sound better and by the way this is kinda my job. So, can I ask you a question?
MR. JENKINS
Sure, I owe you that at least I imagine.
HITOMI NAKAMURA
When you came in last night you were mostly mumbling but at one point you called me Aiko?
Mr.Jenkins physically reacts to the name, pulls back slightly and appears uncomfortable.
HITOMI NAKAMURA
Is Aiko someone we can call for you? A friend, a family memb.
MR. JENKINS
(the normally respectful Jenkins, interrupts her) No, you can’t call her (looks away from the Dr. and is holding back tears)
HITOMI NAKAMURA
(confused) I don’t mean to upset you but you called me Aiko and talked about candy and said you were sorry. If its a loved one you lost, we have really good therapists I can get.
MR. JENKINS
I shouldn’t have said that name and I am sorry (tearing up a little more)
HITOMI NAKAMURA
No need to apologize for calling me the wrong name, when you were incoherent.
MR. JENKINS
No, I’m sorry, I need to apologize to you and your people
HITOMI NAKAMURA
My people? Sir, I’m from Seattle, I doubt you even know my family
MR. JENKINS
Not your family, your people, Japanese people. (he looks around the room)
HITOMI NAKAMURA
I’m really confused sir
MR. JENKINS
The box, I need the box
Hitomi gets up out of curiosity picks up the tattered old file box and sets it on the bed. He begins to rifle through papers and pulls out old pictures.
MR. JENKINS
I live down near the lake, well used to be in the forest before there was a lake. I used to hunt and when I couldn’t find game, I’d carry my old brownie and take pictures. Develop them myself at home, I did recon photography in the war.
HITOMI NAKAMURA
You don’t need to apologize for being in the War.
MR. JENKINS
No, let me finish. After I was discharged and sent home, I was hunting and found something in the woods. A camp, military prison camp. What I found was Japanese families being held there, this was after the war was over.
He hands her old photos taken from the brush but faintly showing Japanese families behind a large fence with razor wire and complex of buildings inside the fence line.
HITOMI NAKAMURA
I see (slowly flipping through photos)
MR. JENKINS
I became obsessed with it, returning, observing never seeing any prisoners being discharged to go home. I noticed one area near the fence line where the children would play in the dirt. So at night, I timed the guard patrol, snuck to the fence line and threw wrapped hard candy into the dirt area.
HITOMI NAKAMURA
That was thoughtful
MR. JENKINS
No, it was cowardly. I was willing to keep returning with candy and let that make me feel better (he starts to cry again and looks down at his hands) but not willing to take action.
HITOMI NAKAMURA
Did you say this was near the lake?
MR. JENKINS
Its dead in the middle of the lake, the deepest section. That shallow lake is a coverup!
HITOMI NAKAMURA
Do you mind if I borrow these? (holding up the pictures) It may not be too late for you to help.
MR. JENKINS
Keep them if it helps at all
INT.COFFEE SHOP – MID MORNING
Tattered and defeated, Duncan walks into the coffee shop alone, leaving a trail of dried mud behind him with the notices still crumpled in hand. He continues to read the notice and the waitress is taking longer than normal. She finally comes with two coffee cups only one has coffee in it.
DUNCAN SMALLS
I only need one
WAITRESS
You are gonna need two and I should bring you a broom also (pointing at the trail he left)
DUNCAN SMALLS
Sorry, I didn’t realize
WAITRESS
Oh well, I guess its ok
Hitomi comes flying through the front door of the coffee shop, the waitress sees her then turns and pours the other cup
WAITRESS
I told you so..(then walks away)
HITOMI NAKAMURA
I don’t know how but you were right (spreading the photographs out on the table) You look like hell, what happened?
DUNCAN SMALLS
(still in shock to see her, he slowly puts down the notice in his hand and looks at the photo’s)
Where did you get these?
HITOMI NAKAMURA
A patient, who is also a witness. You look like you lost a fight?
DUNCAN SMALLS
That I did, now I think I maybe winning this war. (he singles out one photo that shows a solider clearly in uniform) Who is this? I can almost read his name.
HITOMI NAKAMURA
I don’t know, I didn’t look that closely at them. I was just in shock that it all lined up with your dreams.
DUNCAN SMALLS
Wait, how did the waitress know you were coming?
HITOMI NAKAMURA
I treated her son last year for a football injury, we exchanged numbers then. I called and ask if she had seen you this morning.
Duncan takes a sip of coffee, while lost in thought and his swollen lip causes him to dribble.
DUNCAN SMALLS
How long will your patient be in the hospital?
HITOMI NAKAMURA
I don’t know that I have reason to keep him past today.
DUNCAN SMALLS
Can you make one up? Buy some time and can he have visitors, can you get him to talk about it to anyone else?
HITOMI NAKAMURA
I could probably keep him for observation for another day or two much more than that. I think at this point he is willing to talk, at least as a favor for me, why?
DUNCAN SMALLS
Its a stretch but I have an idea.
HITOMI NAKAMURA
I thought seeing these would give you,, I don’t know something like closure, maybe write about it and get your job back and be done with the rest of the nonsense. Get your old life back.
DUNCAN SMALLS
(Duncan takes a beat, thinking deeply) This is so much bigger than my job or any thesis. I had time to think this morning. I have spent most of my life trying to somehow make my dead parents proud, spending the currency of my future to pay off a debt I thought I owed to my past. I don’t know if its the Universe, or destiny but I now have been given an opportunity, a purpose if you will, a chance to make a difference. Something bigger than myself.
HITOMI NAKAMURA
Wow, I have been waiting to meet this guy in front of me. So no, more
DUNCAN SMALLS
So, is your patient reliable?
HITOMI NAKAMURA
He is an elderly man with dementia, not exactly witness stand material if that’s what you mean.
DUNCAN SMALLS
Can you keep him for another 24 to 48 hours and if I send someone to talk to him, keep him in his right mind.
HITOMI NAKAMURA
I can keep him physically there and hydrated but no promises on being lucid.
DUNCAN SMALLS
Ok, do that, hold him, keep him alert and I’ll get someone over there to get his story
HITOMI NAKAMURA
Who are you sending?
DUNCAN SMALLS
I don’t know yet but I gotta go see some students.
He gathers up the photos and puts the one of the solider in his shirt pocket. Runs out of the coffee shop.
INT.CLASSROOM – DAY
Double doors fly open and Duncan bursts into the class he once taught and locates the two students pointing.
DUNCAN SMALLS
I need you and you outside for a minute.
SUBSTITUTE TEACHER
You can’t just disturb my lecture
DUNCAN SMALLS
I just did
STUDENT 1
Yeah, he just did
DUNCAN SMALLS
You still on the school newspaper? And do you have access to the photolab or equipment?
STUDENT 1
Yeah, sure. I have access to editing software and scanners. Why whats up, want our help now?
DUNCAN SMALLS
Holding up the photograph of the soldiers in front of the camp, while pulling others out of his pockets.
This is whats up! I need you guys to scan these and clean them up. If you can, see if we can read those uniform names.
INT.UNIVERSITY MEDIA LAB – MOMENTS LATER
One student is scanning while the other is enhancing the scans as they show up in the computer. In some they can clearly see the razor wire a top the fences and asian adults and children inside, this is obviously a prison.
STUDENT 1
Two of the soldiers are turned, you can only see partial names but one. Let me see if I increase the contrast and zoom just a little more..HOLY SHIT!
DUNCAN SMALLS
What? Can you see anything? What is it?
STUDENT 1
This looks like it says WINFIELD and I swear that darker area on his neck,,right there. Is the same burn scars but that’s a little fuzzy.
DUNCAN SMALLS
Can you make sure it looks like the scars?
STUDENT 1
I can’t enhance this anymore, it will go to shit on me.
DUNCAN SMALLS
That’s not what I mean, touch it up so it clearly looks like the same scar. Make it obvious as hell!
STUDENT 1
Sure! I’m game, I can doctor the shit out of shot!
Duncan starts pacing the room thinking, then quickly turns back to the student.
DUNCAN SMALLS
Do you think you can get someone from the state paper,,some one who is hungry to make a name for themself, come interview a witness?
STUDENT 1
A witness? We making up fake witnesses now?
DUNCAN SMALLS
No, I have a real one and with this photo,, the pieces are starting to come together.
He paces around more still talking
DUNCAN SMALLS
And I need you to write a fake story for the University news paper.
STUDENT 1
Hey man, I’m capable of writing a REAL! story.
DUNCAN SMALLS
That’s not what I mean, my point is we aren’t looking to get this actually published. Just to circulate information out through the staff, especially the picture with the name and scar in it.
STUDENT 1
So whats the story? Winfield was in the Army once? That’s not sexy news. And where is this witness that you are bogarting from me?
DUNCAN SMALLS
The story is something like University staff was involved in a secret prison camp and systematically suppressed a PhD’s candidates research to continue support of a coverup. Something like that, use my name and what has happened to me.
STUDENT 1
Is that what happened to your lip and your nasty looking eye?
DUNCAN SMALLS
Yeah, it is (reaches up to touch his lip) I almost forgot
STUDENT 1
Stand over there by the wall, I need to get pictures of this shit, for the story.
DUNCAN SMALLS
Make the story sound like there is a mountain of more evidence coming, that this is just scratching the surface.
STUDENT 1
Nice! Where is the rest of it?
DUNCAN SMALLS
I don’t have anymore, this is it.
STUDENT 1
Whoa yeah, a bluff, now we’re talking!
DUNCAN SMALLS
Oh and I need to give you the name and location of the witness (grabs some paper and a pen) we need someone from the paper, someone who can get the news media and others to listen.
STUDENT 1
Got it!
DUNCAN SMALLS
We don’t have much time, I need someone to go see him to day and you get copies of your story out around campus. People need to see this picture and think there more. Once you do that, you should leave campus for a few days, lay low somewhere.
STUDENT 1
Oh wow, this is like real breaking spy news shit!
DUNCAN SMALLS
If Winfield thinks you know more, it could get ugly. Hey, make copies of the pictures and tell your dad you need to visit him at work and talk. Call in sick to class. Here is the name and room number oh and my girlfriends name Dr. Nakamura for the reporter.
STUDENT 1
And what are you gonna do?
DUNCAN SMALLS
I’m not sure yet, I’m working on it. (pulling out his phone and texting)
INT.THE LIBRARY BAR – SAME TIME
LANCE LARRSON
What happened to your eye? Oh Jesus and that fat ass lip?
DUNCAN SMALLS
Thanks for meeting me, I’ll fill you in
We hear Duncan catching up Lance on the events and the plan with the student and Mr.Jenkins to this point.
LANCE LARRSON
You know if this is true, old Winnie is just gonna come after you harder with the boys.
DUNCAN SMALLS
I know, that’s why I need some ideas, I need something that will shine a spotlight so bright he doesn’t dare make a move.
LANCE LARRSON
And you said, that you saw huge complex of building rubble that matches the photo’s?
DUNCAN SMALLS
What if people think the photo’s are faked or from some other place?
LANCE LARRSON
I have an idea (takes a beat and a deep breath) its crazier than your boat shit but if we can pull it off, it will be a spotlight for sure. Hang on, I need to make a call.
Lance pulls out his cell and walks toward the door, motioning to Duncan to stay put and not follow.
EXT.CONSTRUCTION SITE – NIGHT
Its dark and by flashlight we can see Duncan and Lance is fumbling with keys to unlock a padlock on a large chainlink gate.
LANCE LARRSON
So, you remember those summers I worked road construction?
DUNCAN SMALLS
Summers? You didn’t last 4 weeks!
LANCE LARRSON
That’s not the point, I’m still buddies with some of the guys. Well and one (we hear the lock release) is now the owner, since his retired last year.
DUNCAN SMALLS
And so he just gives you the keys? And says here play around at night?
LANCE LARRSON
You know my dad was the county prosecutor for one term?
DUNCAN SMALLS
Yeah, so what?
LANCE LARRSON
Well, my construction buddy got in a little jam once. Something about punching a deputy. Well my dad helped keep it out of court and some money changed hands. The deputy got a new sports car and my buddy walked.
DUNCAN SMALLS
So he owes you? And is dad still pissed you didn’t go to law school?
LANCE LARRSON
Yep and Yep, he fuckin owes me. Anyway, this highway project is behind schedule and over budget, so to cut cost, they cut night security!
DUNCAN SMALLS
I still don’t get how this helps my situation?
LANCE LARRSON
You see that big ass backhoe?
DUNCAN SMALLS
Yeah, so?
LANCE LARRSON
Guess who knows how to use one? (points at himself) We just have to have it back and this place locked up before 5 am.
DUNCAN SMALLS
Still don’t get it
LANCE LARRSON
Oh, you will! Hop on bitch!
INT.NEWS STUDIO – MORNING
NEWSCASTER
Good morning viewers, if you are headed north we have some bad news. The freeway has been flooded by a break in the lake conway levee. That’s right, the lake is emptying into the surrounding forest and low lying sections of I-40. Our helicopters are on the way to the scene, we will bring you video soon.
EXT.LAKE – MORNING
We see helicopters flying over a flooded freeway then moving toward a almost empty lake bed.
INT.NEWS STUDIO – MOMENTS LATER
NEWSCASTER
And we are back with that exclusive footage of the levee failure we promised you! I’m sorry what?(news caster, holds her earpiece tighter in her ear) Sorry viewers, my helicopter crew says they see what looks to be foundations and maybe rubble of a large complex of building in the lake bed. (holds the other ear piece) My researcher on the news floor, says they can find no record of previous buildings before the damn was built.
We see the video footage from a low flight and then hovering directly over what was a huge complex of buildings.
INT.TEACHERS LOUNGE – SAME TIME
We see professors and teachers getting coffee, on the wall is a flat screen tv showing the newscast. We also see the back of Professor Winfield watching. Behind him we see the door opening and Duncan & Lance quietly walking in.
INT.CHANCELLORS OFFICE – MORNING
We see the chancellor watching the morning news in his office, we see him notice a piece of paper in the floor. As he picks it up, we can see that its the fake University paper story detailing the Universities actions to suppress Duncan’s research. He looks back up to the breaking news story.
INT.NEWS STUDIO – MOMENTS LATER
NEWSCASTER
Wait, wait, we have more! I’m told we have a newspaper reporter on the phone, who says recently he finished an interview with an eyewitness, this witness tells us this was a secret military prison camp. Oh and we have a picture coming in now!
INT.TEACHERS LOUNGE – SAME TIME
From behind we are still seeing professor Winfields back watching the screen as we see the old picture of him with his name clearly displayed, fills the screen. He drops his coffee cup on the floor and it breaks. The others in the room turn to look at him. He turns to leave the room and see’s Duncan and Lance across the room with a table in between.
DUNCAN SMALLS
Got something you would like to tell us?
Lance is standing behind Duncan with both middle fingers up in the air, we can see he’s bursting at the seams. Winfield is fuming but in a room full of people staring at him, he dare not try anything.
LANCE LARRSON
Hey! Fuck You!
Winfield storms out the opposite toward his office. Lance’s cell rings and steps out into the hallway, Duncan walks behind him and we can hear Lance talking.
LANCE LARRSON
Hey buddy. Yep we are even, we’re good. Ummm hmmm, ha ha. So your insurance guy says the flooding is an act of god and you have a claim..thats great! And I’ll bet the state will be taking bids on rebuilding a certain levee. Funny how it all works out my friend!
INT.NEWS STUDIO – NIGHT
NEWSCASTER
We have word coming in from police that a Professor George Winfield is dead of what looks to be a self inflicted gun shot wound, he was found in his University office earlier today. We have reached out to the University and are awaiting comment.
INT.UNIVERSITY GROUNDS – WEEKS LATER DAY
We see rows of chairs set up in front of a temporary stage, news crews are present. We see the Chancellor approaching the podium, Duncan and Dr. Nakamura are seated on the stage behind him. Lance is on the front row with the audience.
CHANCELLOR
It is crucial that as an institution of higher learning, that we adapt as the known sphere of information changes. That we heed the call to shine light on injustice, where ever or when ever it maybe found. And with that I am proud to announce formation of our new Center for Asian American studies and Japanese Relocation Archives. I also would like to introduce the Director of the Archives Duncan Smalls.
He turns and motions to Duncan.
INT.THERAPIST OFFICE – DAYS LATER
THERAPIST
Good to see you again, I understand that congratulations are in order.
DUNCAN SMALLS
Thank you
THERAPIST
So, you have had some significant and very rapid changes in your life lately. How are you processing all of this?
DUNCAN SMALLS
Much of it was sudden, it all turned out better for me. So I can’t complain.
He is looking off with a puzzled look on his face.
THERAPIST
And, looks like there is something there.
DUNCAN SMALLS
I,,I still don’t understand where it all came from?
THERAPIST
I’m not sure what you mean by “it all”
DUNCAN SMALLS
It’s a really odd version of my “dreams came true” because they were all nightmares. How did I have dreams about something, I didn’t know existed and yet it was real?
THERAPIST
I see. It is possible that at some point, you did read or come across some information about it, and your subconscious mind neatly packed it away. Later, some event or stress triggered it’s release as dreams.
DUNCAN SMALLS
Again, that’s more theory. This is the only part that bugs me, is not knowing “how” or “why me?”. Nor does it explain me being the only one the see the little girl!
THERAPIST
If you are open to it, we could try hypnosis and access your subconscious mind directly and ask it. How does that sound?
DUNCAN SMALLS
I’m willing to try
We hear the therapist start to walk through some hypnotic induction, we get a sense of some time lapse with muffled volume. Then we are back to real time.
THERAPIST
Now, lets go back to the first time you were aware of the prison camp. Are you back to that moment?
DUNCAN SMALLS
Yes, I’m here, I can see it
THERAPIST
Tell me about it Duncan
DUNCAN SMALLS
I’m not Duncan
THERAPIST
What is your name?
DUNCAN SMALLS
Aiko

Lesson 23: Finish Act 4
ASSIGNMENT
BG’s Act 4 Resolution
What I learned doing this assignment: I’m trying to decide what belongs in the Climax, and what should be moved to Resolution.
Outline ACT 4 Key Scene 4: Resolution – Wrap it up and show us the new status quo.
BEGINNING:
INT. BILLIONAIRE’S OFFICE – DAY
Billionaire gives an interview to Reporter to justify his worldview, to see how much he knows, and blame it all on Energy Mogul. During the interview, Reporter challenges Billionaire’s worldview. The balance of power between them has changed.MIDDLE:
INT. ENERGY MOGUL’S BEDROOM – DAY
Energy Mogul is found dead in his bed — attributed to sudden cardiac arrest due to colchicine, a gout medication.
INT. ST. MICHAEL CONFERENCE ROOM – NIGHT
The floor of a hidden room behind St. Michael Conference Room suffers a sudden structural failure and collapses. The resulting fire from broken gas pipes destroys Northstar documents and equipment.
END:
INT. RESTAURANT – DAY
Reporter is seen smiling and animated, having dinner with Hostess/German Agent.Write ACT 4 Key Scene 4: Resolution – Wrap it up and show us the “new normal.”
(only one piece of it and still in a semi-outline mode):BACKGROUND: Billionaire has terminated Northstar and is in cleanup mode. He’s been briefed by MI6 and was informed that Hacker did not know where leaked materials had come from and was no longer in custody. Billionaire wants to find out just how much Reporter knows. So he calls Reporter’s Editor and tells him he’ll grant an exclusive interview to Reporter.
INT. BILLIONAIRE’S OFFICE – DAY
BEGINNING:
Billionaire welcomes Reporter to his office. All gracious and charming. He extends his hand.
BILLIONAIRE: So you’re a reporter! Instead of making him sit at a guest chair facing his desk, he leads him to the big table. They sit at a corner — former enemies confronting each other at the peace-table.MIDDLE:
Billionaire explains how he has been a lifelong crusader for democracy, and gives his autocracies-are-gaining-on-democracies speech. He is trying to elicit a reaction — trying to gauge Reporter’s level of sympathy to his crusade. He moves to making vague references to his recent aborted activities. “Misconceptions about what we were trying to do.” He looks into Reporter’s eyes — will he be able to see the wisdom of my crusade? Then, he blames it all on the Energy Mogul and moves onto trying to co-opt Reporter.
END:
Billionaire says a talented journalist like him would rise fast in his media empire. Reporter explains that he had dropped out of graduate school and that he’s thinking of going back to mechanical engineering. Billionaire then tries to set him up:
BILLIONAIRE: Ms. Hostess is such a wonderful-looking girl, and so competent, too! If only I were 30 years younger!
Almost jovial.
BILLIONAIRE: I think she likes you!
He again looks into Reporter’s eyes, with a million questions in his own — is this guy smart enough to understand me, can I trust him?
REPORTER: I don’t think she’d be interested in me, sir.
Finally, Billionaire pulls out his checkbook. Reporter looks horrified.
BILLIONAIRE: I have donated billions to charity over my lifetime. Do you have a favorite charity? Reporter, relieved, gives him the name of a European charity that cares for street animals.-

Peter Birdsong’s ACT 4 Resolution
What I Learned: My resolution is short, but it feels right, mostly. Definitely needs polish. Can’t believe I have finished a rough draft is such a short time! 80 pages!
EXT. B.V.I. MARINA – DAY
Carly’s sunhat shades her eyes as she watches Grant expertly maneuver Redeemer into her slip. Her only bag over her shoulder.
Grant notices her and waves with a friendly smile.
Laurel stands next to Carly.
Dock hands move around securing lines, while Grant does the same on the boat.
CARLY
This doesn’t–this won’t stop you from being the next CEO, will it?
LAUREL
I’m not going to be the next CEO.
Grant steps off of the boat and onto the dock.
GRANT
She sails beautifully.
They smile at him.
GRANT
What?
I/E. YACHT – DAY
Carly swings around the rigging, prepping LINES on her boat like a pro. She Reaches the helm and takes the wheel.
Her tan has darkened. Her hair is sun bleached. There are decorative BEADS lining a braid in her hair. Her whole attire shows the evidence of places visited. Had she been an islander in the south pacific, she might blend in entirely.
Ahead is a tall mountainous island, covered in jungle green and palm trees.
LAUREL
I never imagined I would finally visit Tahiti like this.
CARLY
What do you think it’s like?
LAUREL
Let’s find out.
Carly smiles, staring ahead. She pulls and adjusts lines, trimming the sails of her vessel.
CARLY (V.O.)
Mom and I sailed together for five years. In that time we rounded the world and then some. And though she returned to the land, I kept going. But she never left. She meets me at most ports, and still joins me on bigger crossings. We sometimes say it’s what Dad would have wanted. And that’s true. But it’s also what we have come to want.
-
Patrick Downey – Act 4 Resolution
What I learned doing this assignment is to just write out your thoughts and ideas and if you need to enhance your ending, you can always do it later. Is there a perfect ending after all? Isn’t that for the audience to decide?
Superbowl Kick-off
We see sitting in the vault Dardanos, Kristos, Graham and Patrick glued to the TV with anticipation of a huge payday. There have been years before where they didn’t even necessarily watch all of the game and seldom if ever came together to watch a championship. However, with the large sum on the line, some dissention and hesitation amongst the group, and a tightly forecasted outcome everyone thought it better to watch at the office. What is typically a very quiet day at the Chicago FBI office, some 25 agents, task force, and other personnel are getting ready for their own celebration.
The end of the 3rd quarter has the HAVOC selection down by 3 points but the other teams star running back has just headed to the locker room with an injury which is a godsend since he already had a 165-yard rushing day and 3 touchdowns. The game is down to 5:12 in the 4th quarter and it is all tied up at 24-24. The vault reeks with the stench of cigar smoke and high dollar imported scotch two things Ray never allowed inside the vault but Dardanos continues to disrespect Ray even in his grave. The 2-minute warning has been given with their selection to win the Superbowl sitting at their opponent’s 28-yard line with a first down. This is purely clock management at this point with only a short field goal to win the Championship. First down they run the ball for 4 yards up the middle, clock still running. Second down they run the ball off the right side for 8 yards and a first down. The ball is now at the 16-yard line and the clocks starts up again on the referee’s whistle. The opponent has no timeouts, and the clock is down to 38 seconds and still running. First down they try a pass to the corner of the endzone, but the receiver was covered so the QB threw it out of the endzone. It is now second down, and the clock is stopped with the incomplete pass at 31 seconds. They hand the ball to the fullback who gets just 2 yards to center the ball. The clock is rundown to 8 seconds and the sidelines signals time out. Out comes the field goal unit on third down just in case something goes wrong with the snap or hold to attempt the game winning kick which happens to be a chip shot just a little more than an extra point kick.
INT. H.A.V.O.C. OFFICE VAULT – NIGHT
Dardanos
Gentlemen, you’re about to win the largest bet ever placed in American sports history. Don’t forget who you have to thank for it either. You would still be a bunch of bums without me!
Sensing the win, the tension has definitely lifted and the guys all chuckle and tell Dardanos where he can go.
Patrick
You’re still spoiled little brat Dardanos no matter how much money you have.
Graham
We don’t give a rat’s ass about history, we’re about the future daddy’s boy!
Dardanos doesn’t like the disrespect at all but looks over at his father who winks at him and laughs. Dardanos takes a big swig of his whiskey and laughs along with them.
(The radio sounds with the following command)
Agent Belfiore
All agents into final positions.
The vault is electrified with anticipation; the ball is snapped the kick is up and out of nowhere the starting free safety with a 6 yard running start times the snap perfectly and dives over the entire defensive and offensive lines to block the kick. The safety was a member of the United States Olympic team as a high jumper and as he flew through the air and blocked the kick it was even more incredible how he tucked and rolled and the end. The ball bounced one time off the turf right into the hands of the cornerback and in full stride as the clock winds down and no one chasing him except his own players the improbable happens and the Handlers have lost 472.5 million dollars just like that. If the mood wasn’t already shitty enough, in walks Agent Belfiore and Agent Greene with weapons drawn followed by another 12 or so agents.
Agent Belfiore
FBI, everyone stay exactly where you are with your hands in the air. You are under arrest for illegal gambling, extortion, money laundering and at least a half dozen other state and federal charges.
Kristos, Graham & Patrick all bolt for various exits in the building. Dardanos still sits stunned and numb with the actions on the field as agents cuff him. Kristos makes it out to the street through a side door and notices an uber car waiting for a customer and quickly jumps in and tells the uber driver to drive towards the airport and tosses him a $100 bill. Graham manages to exit through the basement level a section not known to all the Handlers, but Graham had discovered the exit during the initials days after the purchase of the building and disguised it as a huge hanging painting of his beloved NY Giants. Upon his exit, he headed towards the street and fell in with some partygoers and even grabbed a guy’s hat and a beer from another fellow. Patrick chose to take his chances inside the building and hide in the women’s restroom standing on one of the toilets.
High fives and cheers sound off outside the building as the streets fill with partygoers, bar hoppers and in a nearby van with Cayman’s gang celebrating with the most incredible last play ever seen in a Superbowl game. Heck for that matter any NFL game to date. Cayman and his group pile out of the van to get a first-hand look on the faces of the Handlers as they are escorted out of the building. Cayman wants to make sure that Dardanos gets a good look at the poor deaf boy that put him away. As Dardanos’s eyes meet Caymans, he opens his jacket and has on a sweatshirt that says “4 Ray” and flips Dardanos double fingers.
It just so happens that as Agent Belfiore is walking out Dardanos, Cayman looks at one of the agents and seems to recognize him but can’t place where from but with the excitement going on figures it was just at the Mac-n-Cheeze truck one day. About 5 minutes later as they are loading the men into the FBI vehicles, he sees this same agent putting Dardanos into his vehicle and it clicks. He reaches for his phone and pulls up the picture of Dardanos meeting with the guy at the Violet Hour six months earlier and it is the same guy. Cayman’s emotional state goes full on red like a bull charging a matador. He grabs the nearest agent’s gun from his holster and points it directly at this agent. In a split second a dozen officers and agents all pull their revolvers and aim directly at Cayman.
Agents/Officers
Drop the gun son! We don’t want to shoot you, but we will if we have to.
They are yelling at him to drop the weapon, but they don’t know he can’t hear them. Cayman’s friends try getting to him but are held back by other officers.
Agent Belfiore
Hold your fire! Lower your guns! This kid is deaf and can’t hear you.
The agent with Dardanos realizing the situation decides to reach for his weapon at the same time, however, barely gets his weapon out before he is shot in the shoulder by Cayman. As he turns the gun towards Dardanos ready to fire a second shot Agent Belfiore tackles him to the ground. Agent Belfiore
Cayman what the hell is wrong with you?
Cayman shows him the picture on his phone. Agent Belfiore quickly puts two and two together.
Agent Belfiore
Agent Greene put Agent Tortelli under arrest. I had long suspected a mole within our ranks but could never flush them out. It figures our only New York transfer that requested this field position. That should have been a red flag right there. No one request this shitty job. Get that piece of trash out of here.
We see the uber car that Kritos has jumped in pulling up to a red light with two large black SUV’s sitting on either side of them at the light. The guy driving the uber car puts in park and opens his door and walks away. Kristos is yelling at him asking him where the hell is he going when doors open on both sides of the car from the SUV’s and out steps FBI agents with handcuffs and guns drawn.
(CUT TO STREETS)
Switch to the calamity in the streets of people celebrating and the group that Graham has fell into. Graham tries to break off to head down another street less busy, but the guys won’t let him go. They put their arms around him, hugging him very tight as drunk guys do when they’ve had way too much alcohol. He pushes one guy off and another puts him in a headlock, laughing and wrestling with him. Patrick finally gets upset and yells “that’s it I’m done!” One of the guys says your damn right and three of the guys pull out their badges and put him under arrest. Patrick lasted almost 30 minutes until he became tired, and his foot slipped into the toilet bowl just as a female agent was entering the restroom to use it. Needless to say, he was quickly flushed out!

Janeen’s Act 4 Resolution
What I learned doing this assignment is that some of my setups are weak earlier and I’ll need to fix that in rewrite. i’ve made notes.
OUTLINE

Ivy has breakfast cooking, the WH calls to tell them all is well. They should meet a private jet at the airport – with clothes.
INT. PRIVATE JET – DAY
Holly and Rudy are in regular clothes, but Nick is dressed as Santa again. The president wants Nick to join his parents’ security detail. Ivy and Nick kiss, the parents wink.
SCENES
INT. LAKE HOUSE 4 TOY GARAGE – MOMENTS LATER
NICK and IVY, in helmets and snowmobile suits are gunning snowmobile engines. RUDY and HOLLY hang onto them tightly, smiling brightly at each other through their helmets.
INT. LAKE HOUSE 5 – MORNING
In their fifth house, there is no Christmas trim. IVY, HOLLY and RUDY are in fluffy bathrobes.
Ivy brings a plate of pancakes to the table.
HOLLY
The bath was nice, but I wish they would have left the hot tub on.
RUDY
I like the robe on you.
She swats his hand away from her thigh.
HOLLY
Eat your pancakes.
(calls loudly)
Nick, hurry up. The pancakes are done.
Ivy’s phone rings. She pulls it from the robe pocket.
IVY
Yes, Mr. President. Do you want to talk to your folks?
She puts the phone on speaker and sets it in the middle of the table.
PRESIDENT
A friend will pick you up in his jet at the Milford airport. Can you get there by noon?
They all look at Nick. He nods.
IVY
We’ll be there.
PRESIDENT
And Ivy, bring Santa with you. His country needs him.
IVY
Wait, you mean the military?
PRESIDENT
No. The Secret Service. You could use a partner like him, couldn’t you?
Holly and Rudy snicker and do a high five. Ivy mocks throttling them.
PRESIDENT
Ivy?
IVY
Yes, Mr. President. I could use someone like Nick on your parent’s security detail.
PRESIDENT
Okay, then. We’ll see you all at the White House tonight for dinner.
Nick comes out in an ill-fitting Santa suit, not his original. Everyone stares at him.
NICK
There were only three robes so i had to improvise.
INT. PRIVATE JET – DAY
The private jet is lush. There is a champagne flute in front of each of them. HOLLY and RUDY are in their costumes, now clean. IVY, in her elf costume, and NICK in his Santa gear are seated together, GRIZZLY on his shoulder. They move closer as they speak until their lips are nearly touching.
NICK
You really think we should work together?
IVY
I think we make a good team, don’t you?
NICK
Of course we do, but that would mean we’d be spending a lot of time together.
IVY
I think I’d like that. What do you think?
NICK
I think I like this, so I’d probably like that.
They smile at each other. Kiss.
Holly and Rudy do a quiet high five.
Nick and Ivy turn to look at Grizzly who licks their noses in turn. They kiss again.

Robert Wood’s Act 4 Resolution
What I learned is another confirmation that my script is really short… only 60 pages. There will be a lot to do in rewrites!
INT. RETIREMENT HOME ROOM – DAY
This is Bert’s room, without doubt — the main wall is covered in Ogopogo clippings, photos, and notes.
Bert sits at a desk, staring at the wall, a scatter of paperwork before him.
A knock at the door.
BERT
Who is it?
The door opens, revealing Matt, carrying a box.
MATT
Hey, Dad.
BERT
Visiting hours, huh?
MATT
Come on, that’s not fair.
Matt puts the box down on the bed.
BERT
What’s that?
MATT
Just some stuff…
Matt nods that Bert should go ahead and open it.
MATT
Go ahead…
Bert lifts the lid of the box. Inside are all the items related to Harris: photos, letters, and the Nessie pin resting on top.
MATT
I don’t know how we missed this box when we were moving you in here, but… here it is now.
Bert touches a few items.
BERT
Harris.
MEMORY FLASHES of happy times with Harris.
Bert looks up from the box.
Harris now stands in Matt’s place.
Bert stands, faces him.
BERT
I’m sorry.
Harris nods and half-smiles, as if saying, “I know — it’s okay.”
Bert raises his hands and holds Harris’s head, his fingers woven through the young man’s hair.
MATT (V.O.)
Bert.
BERT
Harris.
MATT (V.O.)
Dad.
Bert’s vision shifts in a blink. His fingers are now in Matt’s hair. He pulls them down in confusion.
BERT
Harris — where are you?
MATT
He isn’t here.
BERT
Harris — don’t go. Don’t leave me!
Matt grabs Bert’s shoulders, focusing him.
MATT
Dad! It’s just you and me here.
Bert returns to reality, like a punch in his gut.
Bert has no words.
MATT
I’m sorry if this brought back sad memories.
BERT
No — don’t be sorry.
MATT
I just thought you’d want this stuff.
BERT
Thank you. And the memories aren’t sad… except for the end.
MATT
I’m glad.
BERT
It was worth it… to remember him… and to finally reveal the truth.
Matt looks around the room; indicates the Ogopogo wall.
MATT
I’m sorry we never found it.
BERT
No… but we found something else.
MATT
Yeah…
BERT
I suppose you’ll be leaving now? Back the big city…
MATT
Yeah… about that… I’m not going back.
BERT
What about work?
MATT
There’s stuff I can do here.
BERT
But the house is sold…
MATT
My share of the money from the house is going to come in handy — thank you for that.
BERT
Of course.
MATT
And I’ve listed my place in Vancouver.
BERT
Where will you live? I don’t exactly have room here!
MATT
You probably don’t remember, but there was a winery listing that I was looking at–
BERT
At the dinner table! I may forget a lot of things, but bad manners I remember.
(lightbulb goes off)
You bought it?!
Matt nods happily.
MATT
I figured I’d see if I can’t grow a good grape.
BERT
My son, the farmer.
MATT
Vintner.
BERT
Fancy.
MATT
I take possession in a month.
BERT
I expect you’ll get me a weekend pass out of here and show me around the new place?
MATT
It’s a deal.

Rebecca Jordan’s Act 4, Key Scene 4 – Resolution – wrap it up and show us the “new normal” – Lesson 23
What I learned from doing this assignment is to just keep moving forward. I had to resist the temptation to go back and move stuff around. So I could save it for the 2nd pass. And then got over the fear of the ending and really enjoyed going there. Exciting and emotional. Wrote really fast. And it miraculously came together. Of course there is work to do. But I’m on my way.
Act 4, Key Scene 4, Outline and Resolution Scenes
Resolution:
Beginning: The Last visit. Rachel tells her mom it’s time to get back to work and that she’ll check in with her through Eleanor. No response.
Middle: Rachel’s last day with Mom. The last story. Remember when you and Masa made me to Japanese school… Rachel sings the graduation song Okaasan for her Mom.
End: Mom can’t open her eyes though this time, her face is relaxed. The machines sound in normal time. Tears roll tenderly from Beth’s closed eyes. Rachel senses acceptance for the first time. Rachel lovingly wipes the tears from her mom’s face. Then gently slides into the bed next to her. Runs her fingers through her hair. Beth takes Rachels hand away from her hair. Holds her hand squeezes it.
Closes on credits rolling: Rachel back home ready for gig. Dressed for performance to the nines. Paul waits for her. She sees him. Runs into his arms and he swings her around. Let’s do this.
Band opens with Rebels. Fade out.
Act 4, Resolution Scenes.
INT. MOM’S ROOM – MORNING
Rachel stands next to her mom who appears to be sleeping.
RACHEL
Okay mom. You don’t have to worry. I’m leaving today. I’ll call Eleanor for reports to see how you’re doing. I’m glad you have her. I knew that she was the one. I remember you telling me when I was little that she hid you and Willie. And took care of you when he was sick. I’m sorry we didn’t get to have him. I’m sorry. It’s my fault. I really just thought my Dad came to see me.
Beth’s eyes swell with tears.
RACHEL
Remember when you and Masa made me go to Japanese school? To learn Japanese. I was like 12 with all the little tiny Japanese kids who were first graders… And at the end of the year we had to stand in a semi circle on the stage and sing that song to our Moms. The mom song. Okaasan. I remember that I felt so stupid standing in the middle. The only “American white girl” with all the kids at my sides. I was twice as tall. They were so cute though. I didn’t want to be there. Cause I was such a rebel. I don’t know why I remember that song.
Beth still unable to face Rachel. though this time, her face relaxes. She’s calm. The machines sound steady. Tears roll tenderly from her closed eyes.
Rachel lovingly wipes the tears from her mom’s face. Then gently slides into the bed next to her. Runs her fingers through her hair.
RACHEL
Okaasan, okaasan / watashi no okaasan / yasashi ude de / dakishimete / hitori botchi de / nemureru yoru mo / kokoro wa furusato / watashi no okaasan / furusato / watashi no okaasan
Beth takes Rachels hand away from her hair. Holds her hand squeezes it.
EXT. FESTIVAL – DAY
Rachel swoops into the parking lot. Sees Paul. He waves and heads over.
Rachel, dressed to the nines already unloading the truck. Turns to see Paul gazing at her.

RACHEL
Hi.
PAUL
Hi.

Darryl throws his shovel aside. He jumps to the ground and digs away with his hands the remaining dirt and hay. Marcus helps him they come to a latch in the ground and with all their strength pull it. The latch opens a door in the ground. When Darryl opens It, it leads to an underground shelter. The group tries to discourage him from entering, but Darryl disobeys.

Tina stands with a gun on Ellen. Lorraine and Andrew lie dead next to Tina. Gary removes a knife, he yells to Darryl how his father wasn’t crazy, but instead misunderstood for helping the dead. Darryl tries to calm Gary, but he takes his knife and stabs Marcus. Gary pushes Marcus down the stairs to the shelter.
Gary continues by telling Darryl. Ellen also falsely accused her along with Karen and her father, the sheriff. Gary explains his plan of locating Darryl and befriending fellow psycho Tina.
The exchange with Gary and Tina was he would help her kill her annoying sorority sisters so she could move up in rank. She also was excited to help Gary since she was a fan of his father’s work. Gary says killing Eddy, Jeff and Calvin were bonuses since he just didn’t care for them. Gary points to Lorraine and Andrew and laughs while saying them too, Gary adds his father would be proud.
Gary nods to Tina who then shoots Ellen. Ellen falls to the ground; Darryl attempts to run to her rescue but has the gun on him. Gary informs Darryl rather than kill him they will pin the murders on him, this is a far better punishment.
Gary hands Darryl the knife, but Darryl refuses. Tina threatens to shoot him, but he still denies it. Through the commotion, Detective Garnett enters with his gun drawn. He tells them to put their hands up. Gary and Tina immediately begin to accuse Darryl. Gary pleads that’s why he contacted Garnett because he knew Darryl was the killer.
Detective Garnett calls for backup then attends to Ellen, she’s still alive. Gary grows impatient and retrieves the knife, he stabs Garnett in the throat. Garnett grasps for air and swings around and shoots Tina in the head killing her instantly. Garnett then dies himself.
Darryl dives for Garnett’s gun, but Gary jumps on his back, Gary then chokes Darryl until he passes out. Gary removes a lighter and proceeds to set the barn on fire. Marcus sneaks out of the shelter and can wake Darryl up.
Darryl jumps to his feet and grabs Garnett’s gun. Gary turns to Darryl and pleads his father was innocent. Gary then tries to grab Tina’s gun but is shot several times and falls to the ground. Marcus and Darryl attend to Ellen, all three start to make their way out of the barn; Gary wakes up. Karen emerges from the ground and grabs onto Gary, he screams for help. Jeff and Calvin then join Karen and he is taken underground.
The barn begins to collapse. Darryl, Marcus, and Ellen make it to safety. As the rain continues to pour down a stream of water drips through the shelter floor onto another floor below. That floor is in a hallway to an abandoned asylum.

VIC VALLEAU ACT 4 SCENE 4 LAST SCENE RESOLUTION. Showing what their life is like after the change.
What I learned doing this assignment: this last scene is very short, sweet and wraps it up. Now, I’m on an exciting and fun journey to finish entire script. I plan to query producers with this completed outline, although I see structural issues to resolve, etc. Thanks Hal!
INT. FORTUNE TELLERS’ STUDIO – 3 YEARS LATER
Nancy is READING A MAN’S FORTUNE.
We see his MASON’S RINGS AND NECK JEWELRY, THAT IDENTIFIES HIM. WE saw his jewelry in Las Vegas. Earlier, he was LUCKY CRAPS PLAYER WHO WON $400K.
We see her wedding ring FROM JT. 2-YEAR-OLD BABY BOY SITS IN HER LAP.
NANCY READS FORTUNE
NANCY: I SEE MANY GENEROUS BLESSINGS FOR YOU. Your past generosity serves you well. I SEE AN EXTREMELY GENEROUS MAN LOVED BY MANY FRIENDS. You are loved by me and my husband JT. We owe our family to you, Mr. Player. You will make many lives happy due to your generosity.
Phone rings: Nancy, hi Elie, sure club dinner tonight. JT wants to celebrate his LEGAL wins. Bye.
Mr. Player: So is he still gambling?
Nancy: Thanks to you he quit! That was his last step to becoming husband material.
Mr. Player: Here’s $100,000. Its what I owe you from Las Vegas. I doubled down on your husband’s losing bet. Tell him it’s from your mother so he can respect her more.
NANCY: I guess he is lucky, after all!
Mr. Player: And you got him!
They both laugh.
THE END.

Andrea Cabañas, ACT 4 Resolution
What I learned: I had to go back a bit to make sure the resolution made sense. Well, it became a small routine from the previous exercises, but luckily it didn’t hold me back too much. It was soo nice seeing the resolution flowing slowly, naturally. Another massive learning curve to me.
Outline
INT. GEORGIA’S ART STUDIO – NIGHT – THREE MONTHS LATER
Georgia’s exhibition, a full house. Georgia shows Zoe her engagement ring.
Katrina’s there, admiring a few pieces of art arm in arm with Zoe. When the night finishes, they farewell. Zoe gives Katrina a ride home; she asks for forgiveness. They embrace.
INT. ZOE’S APARTMENT – DAY
Zoe receives her furniture into her new home. Katrina is there helping her. They put all boxes, and Katrina leaves.
A few moments later, someone knocks on the door. Marina gives Zoe a bouquet of flowers, a box, and a letter. She tells Paula is okay and safe.
Zoe opens the box; it’s cash (or a fancy dress?). She opens the envelope, there’s a flight ticket. She wonders.
EXT. BEACH RESTAURANT – DAY
Zoe ends her dinner alone, frustrated. Paula didn’t appear. When she pays the bill, the waiter says it’s been paid and motions her to follow him.
Paula’s there, astonishing, with a smile. Zoe sighs, looks sideways. She says, “I had to make sure you’re not followed”.
They end the night talking happily.

INT. GEORGIA’S ART STUDIO – NIGHT – THREE MONTHS LATER
It’s Georgia’s exhibition night. People gather in front of paintings. Art pieces made in clay, glass and wood are scattered around the studio.
Georgia is vibrant, talks proudly to her students – children between 10 and 15 years old – and their parents.
Zoe, Katrina and Stewart have a glass of bubbles when Georgia approaches them. Zoe stretches her arm to embrace her friend, who also comes holding a glass of wine.
ZOE
I’m so proud of you, Georgie!
Georgia kisses Zoe’s cheek tight, leaving a lipstick mark, and tries to gently wipe off Zoe’s face.
GEORGIA
Isn’t it amazing?
Georgia scans the place, eyes watering with happiness. She sighs.
GEORGIA
Another dream come true.
They toast. Zoe eyes Georgia’s ENGAGEMENT RING with eyes wide open.
ZOE
What is this!
Georgia and Stewart smile and embrace each other. Georgia shows off her hand with the ring.
STEWART
I proposed to her just before the opening. She–
GEORGIA
I almost died! I was so stressed, all of a sudden the lights from the main panel stopped working, and I was freaking out, about to have a panic attack when he came and–
She gets emotional; Zoe’s eyes are full of tears. Stewart chuckles.
STEWART
I just turned off the lights for a moment. I didn’t know she would freak out.
They laugh. Stewart faces Georgia, takes her hands.
STEWART
And then I proposed.
They kiss softly. Katrina clears her throat and looks away. Zoe wipes down her tears.
MICHAEL (24), a slim boy with a long fringe, approaches and speaks to Georgia.
MICHAEL
We need you over there. Someone wants to know more about the price of a painting.
Georgia strides away.
GEORGIA
Right. You two, look after him, okay?
They giggle, and she leaves. Zoe turns to Stewart.
ZOE
Thank you.
STEWART
For what?
Zoe eyes Georgia talking to a couple.
ZOE
For looking after her so well after all the ordeal.
He chuckles softly.
STEWART
I did all that I did because I love her.
He looks all glasses and sideways.
STEWART
Does anyone want more wine?
KATRINA
Yes, please.
ZOE
No thanks. I’m driving.
Stewart leaves. Katrina faces Zoe, brushes her daughter’s hair back with her hand. Zoe rolls her eyes, tries to get rid of Katrina’s hand; both smile and walk together around the place.
EXT./INT. KATRINA’S HOUSE – FRONT YARD – NIGHT
Zoe parks her car in front of the house. Katrina looks at her.
KATRINA
Are you sure you don’t want to stay over? It’s late and–
ZOE
Mom, stop.
Katrina bites her lips, raises her eyebrows with a sigh.
KATRINA
Okay, okay. I’m still learning to let you go, that’s all.
Zoe smiles.
ZOE
I’ll call you in the morning.
KATRINA
Okay.
Katrina opens the door, makes a move to get out but hesitates. She turns to Zoe, who frowns.
KATRINA
I’m sorry.
Zoe tilts her head, frowns.
KATRINA
All those years with your dad–I never thought how badly what he did to me would affect you–or Chris.
Katrina burst into tears.
ZOE
That’s okay, Mom.
KATRINA
It was hard for me to accept that you were already an adult, that you could leave and be free to love someone. I didn’t expect it would be a woman, but, all right, I think I’m over it.
Zoe sighs, twists her lips, looks down.
KATRINA
When I saw your despair at seeing her shot, only then I realized how much you’ve grown. And how stupid I was for being such a prick.
They giggle. Zoe’s eyes well.
KATRINA
Thank you for standing up for me after all I did for you.
They embrace for a good moment; both cry together.
INT. ZOE’S APARTMENT – DAY
Zoe receives her furniture into her new home. It’s a lovely studio, similar to Georgia’s; it’s full of boxes everywhere.
AARON (35), a handsome, tall man with Maori background, waits for her to sign a document. As she does, he and two other guys leave.
MOMENTS LATER
Zoe is placing some books on a stand. She wears comfy clothes and drinks a coffee in a mug.
Someone knocks on the door. Zoe walks to the
ENTRANCE DOOR
Where she opens it and sees it’s Marina, Paula’s assistant.
They stare at each other for a few seconds. As usual, Marina is elegantly dressed in slacks and a silk shirt; her hair’s impeccably pulled back in a ponytail.
She holds a bouquet of colourful flowers in a relatively large cardboard box. She smiles and hands everything to Zoe. Marina motions to the car inside the bouquet.
MARINA
She asked me to tell you she is okay and safe.
Zoe squints as Marina leaves without saying anything else. She closes the door.
BACK TO THE APARTMENT
Zoe pours water into a vase and places the flowers in it. She sits at the table, stares at the box and rips open the envelope. There’s a FLIGHT TICKET, a HOTEL VOUCHER, and an address. She wonders.
After a moment of hesitation, she opens the box to see a beautiful dress. She takes it out of the box slowly. Is this really happening?
She eyes something else inside the box: another ENVELOPE. This is thick. She opens it, and there’s a bunch of money. Her phone RINGS. A non identified number.
ZOE
(frowns)
Hello?
MARINA
Hi, Marina again. Save this number. You have to message me when you’re ready to get on the airplane.
ZOE
What if I don’t go?
MARINA
It’s your decision.
She hangs up. Zoe looks away, nip bites her lips.
INT. BEACH RESTAURANT – DAY
Zoe wears her new dress, taps her fingers on the table. She looks sideways, nip bites her fingers – didn’t touch her dinner. She’s alone.
She pours more wine into her glass, a WAITER rushes to serve her. She puts up her hand in the air.
ZOE
I’m okay. I’m done.
She gulps her wine, cleans her mouth and calls for the waiter.
WAITER
Any dessert, Mam?
ZOE
No. I want the bill, please.
The waiter strides away and comes back a few seconds. Zoe breaths rapidly, grits her teeth, holds back tears. HE comes back.
WAITER
Mam, your bill has been paid already.
Zoe looks sideways.
ZOE
What?
WAITER
Please, come with me.
He motions her to follow him. They walk through the few customers around and go directly to a private place on the beach.
EXT. RESTAURANT – BEACH – DAWN – CONTINUOUS
It’s a beautiful place, with some white tents on the beach where the sunset falls over the sea.
Someone waits for her, a woman who wears a big hat. She turns to see Zoe: it’s Paula. She drinks a fancy cocktail. The waiter leaves.
Zoe’s mouth is slightly open. She doesn’t know if she cries or smiles.
PAULA
It looks like you’re seeing a ghost.
Paula’s astonishing, elegantly dressed in bright clothes, enhancing her long dark hair and tanned skin.
Zoe looks back then to her.
ZOE
Why didn’t you join me?
The waiter brings another drink to Zoe.
PAULA
I had to make sure you were not followed.
They stare at each other for a moment and smile. Paula touches Paula’s face; Zoe senses the touch with her eyes closed. She locks eyes with Paula.
ZOE
I love you.
Paula smiles.
PAULA
Now it’s the part where I have a blank face and don’t say anything, right?
They giggle, they kiss. Their voices fade as the sun slowly sets over the ocean under romantic Cuban music.

TIM’S ACT 4 RESOLUTION – DAY 23

reformedEXT. DOG PARK – DAY
A bright, sunny day.
Don is at the grill, cooking burgers and hot dogs.

Emma skates with her friends. They’re having a great time.

But Rex owns this new look. He’s not embarrassed at all.
Sunny and Duke laugh.

Dana’s Act 4 Resolution
What have I learned from this assignment?
Once I completed the Climax, the resolution wrote itself. Had been planning the resolution from the beginning of the script, but the emotional twist, the love interest between one of the main characters and a character from the subplot was a surprise to me by the end.
Outline Key Scene 4: Resolution
BEGINNING: Jack and Simon take Frank’s body back to the Russian Social Club for Oksana to bury him. She agrees to give him a full Russian wake. Her feelings for him are reserved, but she’s heartbroken in her own way. She provides Jack with a passport and money to help him run, and then Jack and Simon leave together. Strange bedfellows.
MIDDLE: The governor gives a press conference at which he informs the media of his sorrow for the apparent suicide of Douglas Hill, found dead that morning. He pledges more for suicide prevention. But he refuses to answer the question as to whether the Donovan-Valentino scandal is the reason why he was passes over for the vice-presidential nomination.
END: Oksana, sitting at her table in the Russian Social Club, invites a reporter to join her. They discuss the Donovan-Valentino investigation the reporter is writing about for his paper. At the end of their conversation, Oksana places the missing hard drive on the table and offers it to the reporter. She suggests the hard drive will provide a new perspective for his reports and simply smiles.
Key Scene 4: Resolution – Wrap it up and show us the new normal.
INT. RUSSIAN SOCIAL CLUB – NIGHT
CLOSE SHOT OF FRANK
His body laying on a bench, at peace. A gentle woman’s hand brushes a hair off his forehead.
OKSANA (O.S.)
Pupsick.
Oksana gazes down at Frank, sorrowed and tearful, but stiff upper lip.
OKSANA (CONT’D)
(in Russian)
Give rest, to thy servants with thy saints.
Oksana looks to Jack, standing across from her, and Simon a few feet behind. Her men are scattered through the club.
OKSANA (CONT’D)
We’ll give him a good Russian wake.
JACK
He’d like that.
Oksana looks past Jack at Simon.
OKSANA
Strange bedfellow.
JACK
He did for Frank.
Oksana nods her understanding. She signals her men to cover Frank with a sheet. She leads Jack to a table where a bottle of Russo-Baltique Vodka and two shot glasses sit. She pours two glasses and hands one to Frank.
OKSANA
And your friend?
Frank looks to Simon. Simon politely declines.
Oksana lifts her glass.
OKSANA (CONT’D)
Frank Valentino. A good friend.
They touch glasses and down the vodka.
Oksana unzips a small travel bag and hands Frank a passport.
OKSANA (CONT’D)
The man who owned this doesn’t need it any more. And Mexican officials don’t check. But you should still grow your hair.
(handing him the bag)
Twenty thousand should get you to where you’re going.
Oksana and Jack share a silent moment, a last goodbye. Oksana kisses him on both cheeks.
OKSANA (CONT’D)
Goodbye, Jack Donovan.
Jack nods, looks to Simon, and they both leave.
Oksana watches them leave.
EXT. RUSSIAN SOCIAL CLUB – ALLEY – CONTINUOUS
Simon’s Mercedes is parked in back. Two Russians are guarding the car.
Simon and Frank leave through the back door. The Russians act like valets, holding the car doors open for them to get in.
INT./EXT. MERCEDES – CONTINUOUS
Simon starts the car. He looks to Jack. Jack nods, he’s ready to leave. The car drives off.
EXT. MERCEDES – MOVING – CONTINUOUS
Frank stares out the window, leaving his life behind.
CUT TO:
INT. PRESS BRIEFING ROOM – DAY
Newbaum is at the podium. Margery stands behind him, stoic.
NEWBAUM
My wife and I were devastated by the tragic news of Douglas Hill’s death this morning. Douglas was a valuable member of my staff and an even a better friend. He will be missed.
REPORTER 1
Has the investigation ruled out foul play?
NEWBAUM
The pathologist report is pending, but preliminary indications suggest Douglas took his own life with a single gunshot to the head.
REPORTER 2
Did he leave a note?
NEWBAUM
Not that I am aware of, no.
REPORTER 3
Did he ever show any symptoms of depression?
NEWBAUM
Douglas never showed any signs of depression around me or Margery. But that doesn’t mean he wasn’t suffering.
Newbaum fakes sorrow for a moment, dabbing fake tears.
NEWBAUM (CONT’D)
I feel somehow responsible for not recognizing my friend’s pain. And we owe it to his memory to do more in the arena of suicide prevention and depression. In light of these terrible events, my office pledges to work with law makers to increase our state’s mental health budget.
REPORTER 4
Douglas Hill was working with local law enforcement in the manhunt for Jack Donovan and Frank Valentino. Can you tell us of any progress in the investigation?
INT. RUSSIAN SOCIAL CLUB – DAY
TELEVISION ABOVE THE BAR
Newbaum’s press conference is playing on the TV.
NEWBAUM
(on television)
The search is still on going. But I assure you — these two men will be brought to justice. Douglas would have wanted that.
REPORTER 5
Do you feel the Donovan-Valentino scandal was the reason you were passed over for the vice president nomination in favor of Senator Baker?
Oksana, sitting at her usual table sipping her tea, raises a single eyebrow of satisfaction.
NEWBAUM
(on television)
Thank you for coming.
Newbaum leaves the stage. The report flips back to the anchor in the studio.
ANCHOR
(on television)
That was the governor from earlier this morning…
Oksana’s attention is distracted to someone else.
JERRY COLLINS, 50’s, glasses, frumpy suite, the typical news reporter, stands near the front door. A Russian stands next to him waiting for Oksana’s permission to let Jerry enter.
Oksana nods and signals the bar tender to turn off the TV. He snaps it off.
Jerry approaches Oksana’s table. He has a nervous curiosity to him. He’s not quite sure why he’s there.
JERRY
Ms. Volkov.
OKSANA
Hello, Mr. Collins. It was good of you to come. Please, sit down.
Jerry sits opposite Oksana.
OKSANA (CONT’D)
May I call you Jerry?
JERRY
Please, do. But have to I admit, I’m a little nervous being here.
OKSANA
And yet, you came anyway.
JERRY
Curiosity.
Oksana smiles, spider to the fly.
OKSANA
Would you care for some tea?
JERRY
No, thank you.
Oksana refreshes her tea from the pot.
OKSANA
You’ve been reporting on the Jack Donovan and Frank Valentino investigation for your paper. Is that correct?
JERRY
Yes.
OKSANA
You’ve been rather — how shall I say it — heavy handed in your reporting against these two men.
JERRY
I’ve been factual in my reports.
OKSANA
Factual, yes. But perspective is also important. Wouldn’t you agree?
JERRY
(a little wary)
Yes.
OKSANA
I’m going to do you a favor, Mr. Collins — Jerry.
JERRY
What sort of favor?
OKSANA
A favor of perspective.
Oksana nods to one of the Russians at the bar, and he steps to the table. He waits for Oksana’s go ahead, and when she nods again, he holds up a hard drive for Jerry to see.
He places the hard drive on the table.
Jerry looks at the hard drive, then to Oksana, quizzically.
Oksana holds her cup up tea with both hands and looks over the brim at Jerry. She smiles and takes a sip.

Lori’s Act 4 Resolution
INT. CHURCH – CHRISTMAS MORNING
Everyone is dressed in their best Christmas clothes in the packed church as all are smiling and singing a Christmas song together along with the choir on stage.
As the song ends, the choir sits, and Thomas walks up on stage to a podium where he lays down his Bible. He looks out at the crowd.
Some look back at Thomas with worry. Excited children are having trouble sitting still in the seats. Near the back of the church sits Henry and also the Anderson family.
Thomas is taken by surprise but then stares down at his Bible. He looks back at the people and almost smiles.
THOMAS
In this world, we are all searching for light. We are drawn to it because it is the only thing that can illuminate the dark places that scare us the most. We celebrate Christmas to remember that Jesus came to be our light, our hope. Isaiah 60:20 says, For the Lord will be our everlasting light, and the days of our sorrow will be over.
MONTAGE
Children play in the snow. The Anderson family has a pleasant Christmas dinner in their home. Thomas is at Miriam’s house with her large extended family, and he smiles as he enjoys his coffee and pie. That night the live nativity is perfect, and a single star in the sky shines bright as the onlookers join in a Christmas carol.
