In this assignment I learned how to get the audience to connect emotionally to a show and how they do that on even hGTV shows and how it can be applied to my show.
Brendan Williams Lesson #3 – Connecting to the Viewer
Assignment #1 – (Analyzing Fixer Upper “Pilot Episode”
What is the emotional connection to the show? We see the character ARC of the young couple buying a rundown home and really being scared if they made the right choice and if Chip and Jonna will succeed
How are the characters relatable or non-relatable? Chip and Jonna are two ordinary people that are married and have a family of their own. Many viewers live life trying to balance both work and raising kids and the subplot of the show is actually watching Chip and Joanna be parents while also trying to remodel a home. We get an insight into both their professional and personal life. The client that they work for is an all-American young couple searching for a home to buy on a tight budget and we see them try to get their dream home while struggling to not go over budget, a financial concern we all go through in one way or another.
Is there expert advice or skill depicted that is compelling to watch or learn? During the show, Chip and Joanna both give viewers advice on what to look for when searching for our own homes or doing a fixer upper. They give out the information so simply that anyone can understand it. They don’t use that construction lingo that no one is going to understand. Joanna and Chip show off their designing and construction skills as they help a couple redo their newly purchased home.
Is there an authentic setting that is uniquely compelling? The show is set in an old rundown house that needs remodeling. When we first see the house, it’s like an old 1930’s home covered in vines and dead rats and chipmunks on the roof, so as an audience member, we try to see how Chip and Joanna will take on the challenge by transforming that home into a modern elegant place.
Do the situations portrayed in Fixer Upper lend themselves to comedy or drama? Are they fun or funny to watch? The show has small funny moments regarding the funny obstacles they may face when redoing a house, but the end can get emotional as we watch this young couple be surprised by the transformation of their new home. We get excited for them and how they’re life was just made better because of this experience.
Assignment #2
What is the emotional connection to the show? The emotional connection to the show is the small businesses (various restaurants that specializes in ethnicity food) compete to raise money for charity. Also, we see how emotionally invested the competitors are in their cooking.
How are the characters relatable or non-relatable? The various cooks that come on the show are relatable because they’re everyday cooks working for a restaurant and when we see the segment about the charities that the cooks are playing for, we can sometimes relate to the struggles and hardship that the charity is going through.
Is there expert advice or skill depicted that is compelling to watch or learn? The expert advice and the skill being giving is in regard to “Fusion Cuisine”. How do you combine various kinds of flavors from different ethnic cuisines to create one compelling and unforgettable dish? Viewers will get insight into how to create dishes that combines maybe Mexican and Chinese or Italian and Russian and that they can then do at home. The expert advice will inspire viewers to cook at home.
Is there an authentic setting that is uniquely compelling? The show is set in a soundstage with a built in kitchen. There are two kitchens with a wall in between, so each team can’t see what the other is doing. The kitchen looks like a typical Food Network set and then there’s the dinning room area where the judges sit and try the various dishes. The kitchen has a elegant home feel to it. Also, because there’s a diverse group of cooks (even from different countries sometime), we see their own style and unique way of cooking that we maybe haven’t seen before.
Do the situations portrayed in your show idea lend themselves to comedy or drama? Are they fun or funny to watch? The show is a competition show, so while raising money for charity is the dramatic part, there are many funny moments regarding the interaction between the head chef and the cooks. Also, the host of the show is a stand up comedian that adds a lot of comedic relief to the show. The viewer wants to see the team work under pressure to create an original dish that combines the style of the two teams and win money for their charity. We see how creative they are on the spot and how they communicate with each other during the challenges.

Excuse me, but there must be a better to post our responses. I usually do so in word and paste here. I have tried repeatedly for the last two hours to do so. Perhaps there is something else I need to do to succeed at this. If so, please inform me at image778@aol.com Thank you.

Esther Connects to Viewers!
Assignment #1
What I learned doing this assignment is the meaning of points of access are the hooks/elements that keep viewers tuning in to the show.
What makes this show’s points of access so wildly distinctive and different from shows whose formats are virtually identical?
For Fixer Upper, the show contains many points of access all at once.
There is an emotional connection of hope for the home owner and the hosts that a transformation can occur and that the owner will like the transformation.
It contains Character hooks as the hosts are married which also provides a deeper relationship between them, and the viewers get to see how stresses of home renovation and being in business together can impact a relationship. They are relatable in that they are approachable, down to earth and passionate.
Expertise is prominently featured in the design and the construction that occurs with the property, along with tips and advice from the hosts.
Settings is a hook as the houses themselves are in locations that are ordinary and therefore accessible to the majority of the public vs mega price points.
Humor, the hosts and their interactions themselves provide humor for the show.

Thomas F. Duffy – <u style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Lesson #3 – Connecting to the Viewer
What I learned from this assignment is the shape of what makes the emotional connection with your material is as important, if not more important, than the basic concept. I learned to dig a little deeper to hopefully find the real connection for the project and heighten and strengthen it.<u style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>
Assignment 1 –
A Points of access
1.Emotional connection: an attractive, amiable husband/wife team, joined occasionally by their children.
2. Although they’re on a schedule to complete their makeover of the properties, the contrast of his construction and her decorating make for a great build up to the reveal.
B Characters:
1. an attractive, amiable husband/wife team, crew & vendors, joined occasionally by their children.
2. Also, the couple or family that is getting the makeover can lead to some funny or tense moments.
C Expertise:
1. the couple has proven to be very knowledgeable about what they’re doing and most people are thrilled with the results. 2. people basically know that no matter how big the challenge, by the end of the show they will receive the reward of a gorgeous home.
D. Settings
1. the Waco Texas setting gives it a very down-home feel, which feeds into the wholesomeness of the couple and family. 2. a new house, a new challenge every week. How will they do it? Answer–tune in for the reveal.
E. Humor
1. husband has a down-home kind of corny sense of humor. He always tries to keep it light. 2. His wife is more the straight man, but It always seems are looking out for each other.
What makes it so successful? A combo of all five points of access. I think the ease and personalities of the two leads, combined with their love of family and town, are the determining factors. We want to see them succeed. It’s a definite hybrid.
Assignment 2:
A – what is the emotional connection to my show? I think it will be a combination of hey fun host and crew, the mystery and anticipation of what we might discover, and the exploration of the unknown. People will get to know areas and occupations they will probably never do themselves.
B – how are the characters relatable or non-relatable? Dr. Bones and his crew do not know much more about paleontology, then the audience might when we start out. You will see growth and a fun exploration to find diverse fossils. We will also get up close and personal with some of the top paleontologists in the world, who will take us on a journey we’ve never experienced. We might also explore celebrities at some digs.
C is there expert advice or skill depicted that is compelling to watch or learn? Dr. Bones and his crew will collect, record and identify their discoveries, supervised by noted paleontologists from around the world, who will take us on a journey we’ve never experienced.
D is there an authentic setting that is uniquely compelling? We will explore active fossil sites, interesting nearby finds, dino prints, associated museums or preparation rooms, as well as storage areas for recent finds. Many of these sites are in beautiful, rustic areas, which will be highlighted in drive-ups, personal interviews or panoramic shots of the area.
E do the situations portrayed in your show idea lend themselves to comedy or drama? I think I will leave a combination of humor and drama. It will be hot, dusty and the somewhat dangerous as you are always off the beaten path. Whenever people work together I think you see a combination of both drama and humor. Dr. Bones and crew will be no exception. To temper the seriousness that diggers and paleontologist sometimes bring to their work, humor is a great release. For example, with all the Latin names for dinosaurs, you are sure to mess up at least a few. Paleontologists will keep us honest.
2. how do those answers help define your show and how it might connect with the audience?
I think you start with a beloved character from a highly successful box office success, so the audience is already relaxed. You put him and his crew in various new, and challenging environments, trying to discover new and old species of dinosaurs and other fossils. You try to have some fun along the way and offer the mystery of the unknown, unearthing millions-of-year-old bones, before their eyes and help them understand what dino or fossil each bone belongs to and visualize the creature. Top to bottom, the life of digging for dinosaurs.
3. What I learned from this assignment is the shape of what makes the emotional connection with your material is as important if not more important than the basic concept. I learned to dig a little deeper to hopefully find the real connection for the project and heighten and strengthen it.

ScreenwritingU, Reality TV, Lesson 3, Connecting to the Viewer
Assignment #1 – What Hooks The Viewer? Emotional Connection: In Fixer Upper –-There are many access points. There is an automatic one emotionally, because this is a married couple who work well together fabulously. They’re on the same page. They also focus on creative designs that have sentimental value to different aspects of the renovations, like that cupboard was your grandfathers, and “I know you like copper piping” so they added a rustic look to suit it. They also help people in need and do renovations on a shoestring budget for those who can’t afford much. They don’t always seem like they would make a lot of money from some of their projects, so its admirable in many ways.
Characters: Viewers like Joanna and Chip Gaines, because they’re both young attractive. They’re earthy, practical, dress down and look like a normal working couple in that field. Both of them are optimistic, as well. Chip lives in the moment, where Joanna admits to being more of a number cruncher with her design and looking at more of a bang for their buck.
Expertise: They are creative professionals and do an amazing job that you can’t help but be awed by at times. You can tell they are passionate about their work and think outside the box to make their designs work. They teach others through their work and viewers receive a lot of tips about decorating and design.
Settings: They are in Waco, Texas, which has a small town American feel and a rustic landscape. Middle class.
Humor: Chip has a good sense of humour and they enjoy working with each other, so there doesn’t appear to be a lot of friction on set.
What makes this show more distinctive and different from other shows whose formats are identical? This show probably feels more “real” like reality TV is supposed to be. They talk and sound unscripted and natural. The homes they do are not for the rich and famous, just regular folks. They hit more of the access points than others do.
Assignment 2: Harmonious Families: A: Emotional Connection: The emotional connection to the show is watching the families together at home and at practise. Some of the music selections may generate some sense of nostalgia and attraction, as well.
B: What’s going on in their person lives that will relate to others?
How are the characters relatable? They could be a cross of different families from different parts of the western world or America, different ethnic cultures, economic classes and backgrounds. Mostly, they are regular average families who enjoy playing music together. The background scenes will show their everyday lives, including the problems and how they have fun recreationally.
C: Expert advice? There will be some expertise on performing live and professional coaching. Those who are interested in performing may learn a thing or two on writing music or about a certain instrument during practise and rehearsal.
D: Authentic Setting: Back stage and on stage. Otherwise, we will see a variety of views when we seem them in their day-to-day environment, which could change every view shows and keep the show looking fresh.
E: Do the shows lend themselves to comedy or drama? Fun to watch? The shows are probably more dramatic and there will be many heartfelt, as well as funny, moments.

Sophie Connects to Viewers!
1. My show will connect with viewers in different ways.
A. The emotional connection to the show is people who don’t fit in. Everyone has had a time where they feel like they don’t fit in. Transgender people feel this everyday. Feel what it’s like to be shunned, ghosted, and hated for no reason other than you are a little different.
<div>
B. The characters are both relatable and non-relatable. They are relatable through some of their struggles like depression, acceptance, everyday struggles just to survive. They are also non-relatable in many ways such as being transgender.
C. There are expert advice and skill depicted in the show that are compelling to watch or learn. Things such as doing make overs, how to make different dishes. What makes people perceive someone as male, female, or other and how this affects transgender lives.
D. There are plenty of authentic and uniquely settings, such as kitchens, restaurants, and bars throughout the real America.
E. The situations portrayed in my show lend themselves to drama. Which can be fun to watch? Drama will be had through pairing of people who make laws against LGBT people and the people the laws effect. Or people who should hate us but have never meet us. Or people that are suppose to hate us but don’t.
