Emmanuel’s Character Profiles Part 2
What I learned doing this assignment is creating a character’s bio and life is one of the joys of screenwriting. As a writer, you must care about your primary characters so that it shows in your writing, and if done correctly, the audience will care as well.

Lee’s Character Profiles Part 2
What I learned doing this assignment…was a lot more about my Protagonist, and WAY more about my Antagonist, because I’d not thought much about him before.
Character Profile – Milly (Protagonist)
PART 1
– Role in story – Protagonist
12-13, an “only” child who is sharp and intelligent, but lacks confidence. Physically smallish and unremarkable. <div>– Internal Journey – from zero to hero
External Journey – rescues her father from kidnappers, saves the world???– Motivation – is the only one who believes her father’s been kidnapped, therefore the only one who can save him
– Wound – Milly is an “only” child, and also adopted by her father. She has no idea who her mother is/was, etc.
– Mission/Agenda – Milly feels as though she MUST find her father, and soon. If she doesn’t either bad things will happen to him, bad things will happen to others, or both.
– Secret – Milly knows that her father, a scientist, invented secret things for the government, and that he has a secret collection of “toys” that look like miniature weapons. He’s also told her that one day she’ll do great things, but she doesn’t understand that at all.
– What makes Milly special – Though quiet and shy, Milly has a deep sense of what is good and right, is highly intelligent, and defiant in the face of what she thinks is wrong.
PART 2
– What draws us to this character? – Milly’s innocence and goodness is appealing. We also respect her grit when defending her friend and feel empathy when her father disappears. We want to root for her. </div><div>
– Traits – Smart, plays by the rules, relentless, innocent, self-doubting
– Subtext – When Milly is frustrated, angry, or confused, she’s silent and shrinking.
– Flaw – Innocence and naivety
– Values – Truth, goodness, right is right, wrong is wrong
– Irony – Milly champions following rules, but when she’s angry about a perceived injustice, she breaks them.
– What makes this the right character for this role? – Milly is good to the core, but will go beyond “good” to stop evil. She’s naive, but learns quickly. And she’s relentless.
Character Profile – (General Janus) (Antagonist)
PART 1
– Role in story – Antagonist </div><div>
– Age, general description – 40s-60s?
– Internal Journey – Devolves from merely bad to diabolical
– External Journey – Has laid plans to dominate the world, carries them out, and then reckons with the unlikely consequences.
– Motivation – gaining power over others, feeding his ego.
– Wound – his advice is rarely followed by superiors.
– Mission/Agenda – To bend everyone to his will. He “just wants to watch the world burn.” (Alfred Pennyworth to Bruce Wayne re: The Joker – <i style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>The Dark Knight)
– Secret – He’s knows that aliens exist on Earth.
– What makes him special – Janus lies compulsively, but he uses charm, charisma, and bold action to convince others that he’s honest and good.
PART 2
– What draws us to this character? – He’s naturally charismatic and intelligent, but uses those to manipulate people, bend them to his will, etc. He can literally charm people to death. </div>
– Traits – Charming, ambitious, smart, manipulative, liar, narcissistic
– Subtext – Whenever he’s faced with the truth, he dismisses it with a clever lie.
– Flaw – pathological liar and narcissist.
– Values – Power, intelligence, manipulating others, getting his way.
– Irony – As he acts friendly and charming, he’s actually setting them up to be used and destroyed.
– What makes this person the right character for this role? – General Janus is interesting, outwardly sharp and a great actor. He draws people to him—then chews them up and spits them out.

Part 2
David Sterling
What draws us to this character?
David is a loving father who cares about his kids, but he’s flawed. He is so remorseful for his failure as a father, but is so grateful for getting a chance to redeem himself, and he will do whatever it takes to have a happy life with his kids.
Traits: vulnerable, goes from helpless to empowered, non-confrontational to protector

Flaw: He’s an alcoholic
Values: Loves his kids, is a good provider and puts his kids first, believes in staying married til death
Irony: He’s an alcoholic, but is actually the better parent, even though he feels like a failure. He would always stuff his emotions instead of communicating. Then as a dog, he desires so badly to be able to speak to his kids to tell them its him and that he’s sorry, but he can’t because he’s a dog.
What makes him the right character for this role? He’s kind-hearted deep down. He just lacks confidence and assertiveness, until he is forced to survive to have a life with his kids again.
Mayla Sterling
What draws us to this character?
Mayla is two faced, charming around her friends at church, but emotionally abusive and neglectful to her kids at home.

What makes her the right character for this role?
She’s really good at being two-faced, she disguises her selfishness and appears a saint to some
-
Ying’s Character Profiles Part 2
What I learned from this exercise is that by following this process I am able to better focus my story.
Protagonist- Ying
What draws us to this character?
Ying is smart, friendly, and brave. Total underdog. She must prove herself in a warrior’s world. She is completely new to her job, but she must succeed where everyone else including her father has failed.
Traits:
She is open-minded, vulnerable, and embraces diversity.
Subtext:
She is friendly to strangers and does not press her advantage against others but instead uses the opportunity to befriend them and treat them as equals. She deflects the raw warrior masculinity of the tribe’s men through humor and a deadly arrow aim.
Flaw: Lacks self-confidence to lead tribe<div>
Values: Truth, loyalty, family, tribe
Irony: Although she follows her tribe’s traditional ways, she must go against her tribe’s traditional approach and fight her brother’s orders in battle even leading the tribe into a seemingly more dangerous situation where her approach of friendliness and inclusivity trumps the tribe’s traditional approach of sheer force.
What makes this the right character for this role?
She is the perfect combination of warrior, brave, defiant, but friendly, empathetic, and inclusive to all.
Antagonist- Sun
What draws us to this character?
His arrogance and entitlement make him immediately hateable. He then proves to be elitist, racist, and a bully. He shows self-pity claiming to have stronger bloodlines and lineage to being the emperor.
Traits: smart, manipulative, heartless<div>
Subtext: He constantly feels that life has dealt him unfairly. Deep down he feels he should be emperor and has no qualms committing genocide to help along his ambitions.
Flaw: over confidence, self involved
Values: Power, strength. Might makes right!
Irony: He complains about having a pure lineage to the point of believing he should be emperor ruling China, yet he tries to conquer, displace, and subjugate the Li People that have occupied SE China for millenniums.
What makes this the right character for this role?
He is worse than greedy. He revels in his role in murder and genocide.

Kathi’s Character Profile Part 2
Fran, the Protagonist
What draws us to this character?
She’s well-meaning, humanistic even as she’s gullible and naïve. Because this is a comedy we need to care about her but also be able to laugh at her.
Traits:
Naïve/gullible
Self-centered
Big hearted
Pacifist
Subtext:
Falls back on quoting Saul Alinsky though she’s not sure what it means.
Flaw:
Easily influenced by others
Values:
Equality
Generosity
Idealism
Love
Irony:
Has a bad temper and violent streak though she’s a pacifist
What makes this character right for this role?
Because she’s African American and liberal and should be protected by the new government, she’s the perfect foil for the extreme treatment she actually gets.
Sandy, the Antagonist
What draws us to this character?
They are so passionate and committed to the revolution…will they be able to make it happen, succeed, continue to believe in it?
Traits:
Obedient
Fanatical & principled
Cruel
Confident (know it all)
Flaw:
Overconfident
Subtext: Insults people to cover his ignorance or insecurity
Values:
Revolutionary
Equality
Strength through power
Irony:
Even though they are a minority, they can’t break the rules and defend other minorities – instead they follow the rules of the new government. But it creates a small crack, perhaps.
What makes this person right for the role?
Again, because this is a comedy, it calls for someone who is fanatically dedicated, almost in a cartoon way, so we (or the Protagonist) can tear them down eventually.
What I learned doing this assignment? The more you probe these questions about character, the clearer a picture you get as to who these people are.
-
WHAT I LEARNED: Taking my time to flesh out my characters helps them to be well-rounded and three dimensional.
DAY THREE
IVY DAVIES: What draws us to Ivy? She’s a curiosity. She keeps a part of herself hidden from others, yet that part is dying to break free of secrecy. She tries to make up for past indiscretions by volunteering at an assisted living home, but her method of caring is also secretive and illegal – she makes them pot brownies. She loves her granddaughter, but has to push away too much closeness., because Ivy doesn’t want her granddaughter to discover her outlaw past.

WHAT MAKES HER THE RIGHT CHARACTER? Even though Ivy is a so-called senior citizen, she’s at the brink of finally coming into her own, knowing and revealing truths about herself.
VICTOR BERTZYK: What draws us to Victor? He’s a charmer, but with lots of layers beneath his charm. He’s egotistical and thinks he can fool the world, but beneath the ego and charm he is a man suffering from the onslaught of dementia.
TRAITS: charming, frightened, egotistical, manipulative
SUBTEXT: Victor has been diagnosed with dementia, but vows to keep his condition a secret.
FLAW: He thinks no one can resist his charm.
VALUES: Money, status as a respected citizen, his cleverness
IRONY: Beneath his bravado, Victor knows that he will need someone to care for him in the future, and this thought has him more frightened than he’s ever been.
WHAT MAKES HIM THE RIGHT CHARACTER: Victor is on the brink of needing to let go of his bravado and start to depend on others to take care of him.
-

Flaw: will survive at all costs, regardless as to who she may hurt along the way.

Ed Lusk Character Profiles Part 2
What I learned from doing this assignment is a deeper dive into character is not obvious. It takes me further thought not only to the traits but how they impact and play into story. Does story drive traits or character traits drive story? I like to think the characters traits are going to elevate conflict.
