Bingeworthy TV- Module 1, Assignment 4
Layers of Character Intrigue
What I learned during this assignment: It’s really not that difficult to apply layers of intrigue to characters. You just have to ask the right questions.
Assignment 1 – Example Show – Big Little Lies
In Episode 4 of Big Little Lies – Push Comes to Shove
We discover that Jane’s flashback sequences have expanded to her actually shooting at someone. We’re not sure who it is, but it would appear that she’s hiding from this guy she dated, but did not know well. He appears to be the one who raped her, although we never see who this guy is.
The teacher calls Jane in for a meeting because she believes Abigail, Renatta’s daughter might still be getting bullied by Jane’s son Ziggy. She doesn’t have any concrete evidence, but it creates intrigue, because we have to wonder if Ziggy is secretly taking after his father, whom he doesn’t know. In the meantime, Renatta asks her husband if they should be taking Abigail to see a child psychologist, because she seems withdrawn too much of the time.
We see Celeste smoking pot alone for the first time to calm her anxiety now that her husband is away. She sees a counsellor about how to tell her husband that she wants to resume her career as a lawyer. We know that her husband is controlling and is violent, so this revelation is not going to go over well.
In the Episode prior, Celeste goes to the mayor and defends Madelaine’s legal right to present a theatrical production they’ve been working on, despite the fact, some people in the community, including Renatta, want to ban it. The play will go on, but we know it will be an ongoing issue in the future. Joe, Madelaine’s friend and director of the theatrical show kisses her and tells her they have chemistry and he’s attracted to her. Madelaine simply tells him he’s misreading her and reminds him they’re both married. Considering Madelaine’s husband is not that confident about their relationship, this could pose a problem in future, which also causes intrigue.
Assignment 2: Stuart’s Role – Protagonist
Ways to Create Layers: Hidden Agendas – Stuart starts bringing women he’s really not interested in to family functions just to make his wife jealous or to not feel like a loser.
Competition: He feels he is in competition with Frank over the boys, so he may start to spoil them with more gifts and things. This is a part of his wound to be a better father. In his professional life, he doesn’t trust Mike Scarpelli so behind the scenes they are both trying to get rid of each other. He believes Mike will trying to overblow any slightest mistake he makes, which could be a problem for him if his M.S. gets worse.
Deception: He steals another scientist’s formula for M.S from the lab to add to his research. This could be a continuing lie. Stuart’s M.S. changes his personality and he becomes more concerned about not being able to achieve his goals, so he will lie and cheat and do anything to find a better cure for M.S.
He could lie about the results in the clinical trial.
He could lie about drinking or the amount he drinks to cope with his M.S. episodes or mood swings.
Maybe he gets hooked on uppers since M.S. makes him fatigued?
Stuart initially gets Archie to let him have a mini-lab at Cuckoo Valley by telling him that he knows about the best Big Pharma medical stocks to invest in when he gets more involved on medical science and he’s willing to pass that inside info. to Archie so Archie can make money.
Secret I.D.’s – Stuart discovers Boris changed his name and has another identity, but he keeps it to himself as they are best friends and later allies.
Stuart’s biggest loss in his past – besides his wife’s affair would be that his dad died when he was young. His father had high expectations of Stuart, so Stuart strives to be a pioneer in his field or at anything that he tackles. He is an over achiever, which means that he sometimes takes himself too seriously, sensitive and has a sarcastic sense of humour. He can also be stand-offish.
Boris: Role- becomes Stuart’s best friend.
Hidden Agenda: Wants to bring his entire family over from Russia and not just his wife. His daughters and sons-in-law are conscientious objectors and their life is in danger there, because they are pro-democratic.
Competition: Anyone at immigration. Beatrice, the administrator at the Retirement villa is nosy, so he wishes she were gone. Perhaps him and the rest of the gang conspire to somehow get Beatrice fired.
Secret: Boris was in the KGB at one time and defected. He changed his name and fled the country. His truck accident never actually happened, he was shot fleeing the country following a protest. The thing is when Boris reveals this, everyone just laughs and thinks he’s joking.
Wound: He feels like a failure, because he has broke his promise to his family. He wonders how he can get them out, but being in a wheelchair means he hasn’t been able to make enough money working to get them out. However, most of the residents in the home know he wants to bring his wife here and understand a part of the political scenario, so they do have empathy for him.
Max Thornton: Role: Dean of the University.
Hidden Agenda: While he seems supportive of Stuart, he really wants one of his own students and companies he support to find a better cure for M.S.
Deception: He tries to get Stuart involved in his social circles, committees etc., but that mostly so Stuart won’t have time to do the research he needs and not the reasons he gives. In fact, he wants Stuart to lecture at the university.
Secret: He had several affairs in his younger years with other teachers in his department, which is against policy. Those details have never surfaced.
Wound: His father was a donor at that university and he always felt like he only got the job there because of his father’s money. This makes him a little insecure at times, despite his demeanor that exudes confidence and privilege.
Hank – Role: Ghost/Practical Joker
He’s in competition with Stuart and resents the fact that he’s dead and Maddy likes Stuart.
Hidden Agenda: Despite the fact, Bradrick and Maddy want him to cross over, he doesn’t want to leave the retirement village and likes being a ghost most of the time. He still loves Maddy.
Conspiracy: He tries to Sabotage Stuart’s plans, but has some difficulty.
Secret Identity: Sometimes he lets Bradrick think he’s the ghost of another person. Hank comes to people and speaks to them in dreams.
Hank’s daughter comes to visit Maddy and Hank watches when she comes around. She reminds them of Hank, so he is never quite gone or never quite forgotten.

R. Reid Jr’s EPISODE LIST ROUGH DRAFT. Module 2 Assignment 4
What I learned during this lesson was how important it is to do a lot of planning to make my “pre-writing” a bit more fool-proof than just writing off the cuff” but with a plan. A plan that sells to a producer. This like the other exercises is helping me gain a clear path to making this story with characters that are believable, have things to deal with. And beginnings and endings for each Season, beginning with Season 1.
R. Reid Jr’s CHEAT SHEET
1. Beginning…Bruce an alien with no memory besides basic skills and a mission is sent to earth Season End/Cliffhanger…and it ends with the Mysterious woman he has been chasing saving his life
• Question A: What is the Beginning of the season and the End of the season?
• Question B: What possible cliffhanger could be in that last scene of the season, thus demanding that we watch the next season?
By Bruce having the person he has been chasing saving his life or his life is her hands puts us on the edge of our seats.
2. Season 1 Mystery Set up The Mysterious woman saying Bruce has been here to Earth/Sigma 2619 before.…………………………………..………………Season 1 Mystery Solved Clues indicate that Bruce has been here before, but he only gets it in clues he finds and instances of his memory that he can’t fully trust.
• Question A: What is the mystery?
• Question B: How could the mystery be set up? What parts will be left out that must be solved?
Having Bruce recall certain things in bits of flashes as he goes places or meets people. Like going to a place for the first time where SNOWY has been brainwashed is familiar to Bruce as if he has been there before.
• Question C: What it the ultimate solution that the characters must work to discover?
Bruce can choose to trust the Mysterious woman’s words that he has been to Earth/Sigma before. But that messes with his handlers thinking or instructing him on Earth/Sigma and his lack of adjustment.
3. Journey begins when he arrives on Earth/Sigma 2619 hot on trial of the emission of the TECH being used. Journey peaks when he runs into the agents also looking for the TECH but they have a different goal: they don’t know about the TECH as they are hunting the woman using the TECH.
• Question A: Where does the Lead Character journey begin and end for this season?
Bruce begins his journey as he arrives on earth and ends with the Mysterious woman saving his life and telling him he has been here before.
• Question B: Think about where this character goes in future seasons. That might give you an idea also.
4. ……Layer Bruce arrives on Earth/Sigma 2619
….…Layer Bruce’s own memory is a bit foggy, he thinks it is from the trip to come to Earth/Sigma or the earth it’s self that is having an affect on him.
………Layer Bruce traces the TECH he is looking for to a Mysterious woman.
………Layer Agents from Earth/Sigma are also looking for the Mysterious woman
………Layer Bruce runs into one of the victims who lost her memory. He gives her sage advice not knowing she was a victim and thought she was on a life-journey.
………Layer One of the Agents looks to get a promotion at the expense of procedure and looks to get results in anyway possible, even with the a life taken if necessary.
………Layer The Mysterious woman proves hard to catch and she is dangerous too if she uses the tech on unsuspecting victims. But her motive is unclear.
……Layer Bruce seems to be caught in a trap that would show him to be know about the TECH a lot more than he seems and blowing his cover but the MYSTERIOUS Woman saves him and tells him he has been to EARTH/SIGMA 2619 before and somewhat helps him piece together some of the gaps in his memory.
• Question A: What layers have you already discovered in your BW Framework?
More like seeing new ones or helping the framework pop out more in different ways..
• Question B: Are there any other layers that you could think of?
5. Make a list of the Major Story Lines.
• Question A: What main characters have story lines that affect everyone else?
• Question B: What are the most important story lines of this show?
-Bruce to appear as a fish out of water
-Bruce to have gaps in his memory
-One of the agents to appear to have ambitions that can put his partner in grave jeopardy.
-The Mysterious woman be almost impossible to catch
-The TECH to be deadly if left in the wrong hands
OUTLINING PROCESS
As you are doing this process, allow yourself to fill in the things that come to you, and don’t stress about the rest. Once you have some answers filled in, many of the others will just show up.
1. Use all the above questions to mine the BW Framework for possible episode ideas. List out your answers.
• Episode 1: Bruce arriving on Earth/Sigma 2619 as a fish out of water.
• Episode 2: The Mysterious woman has left a trail of victims that have no memory.

It is important to know that you don’t need all of these answered perfectly. If you have 60% of the questions answered, you can create an amazing show.
Baer and his father go toe to toe; Baer and Marta fall into an unusual sexual encounter for the two of them; Baer dissolutioned and depressed; burns the new manuscript
2. From that list, brainstorm possible ideas for episodes (without fleshing them out). See Baer and Marta having sex with the gun; Baer takes on his father, but Baer finally crumbles
3. Sequence the episode ideas into 8 to 13 episodes. You know where the season begins and where it ends, so those will be your Episode 1 and Episode 8. Then look to see what episodes might emerge in between 1 and 8.
• Episode 1: A depressed Baer gets the teaching job at the school, leads to meeting Savage, brings him home which leads to his meeting Marta and Paige.
• Episode 2: Leylah comes to Lane’s office which begins their disastrous relationship.
• Episode 3: Baer learns about the shooting of the girl at school, which turns out to be Leylah’s sister4. With each episode, list the main events of that episode in bullet points.
Episode 1:
• Baer gets the job, meets Savage
• Savage comes to dinner. Marta attracted. Paige hates him, worries he will break up their family and cause her father great sadness.
• Marion Dryden, Gilgood’s assistant, alludes that Gilgood and Savage have some sort of a relationship.

Tracy El Pueblo Episode List Rough Draft
What I learned doing this assignment is that I have a lot of the answers, but not all of them. I need time to think! 5. Make a list of the Major Story Lines.

Where does the Lead character (Cara) journey begin and end for this season?

Despite her ethics concerns she uses Silva/NMT out of habit to further her interests

Knows about Molly’s fake suicide note because she overheard Mike/Mindy talk about it
Lost her husband to cancer and her two older sons to Alaska which she believes killed their father — broke his heart
Is a master manipulator, despite her personality and Alzheimer’s
Jim: Wants to get Randi’s farm (or at least a third of it) for his oldest son who he is convince was Mike’s, not his.
Willing to partner with anyone to fight big ag — probably not this first season
Wants to have fun with/help Cara to influence her, but will only marry for land which Cara cannot provide him with.
Caused his wife’s accident, but deliberately tampered with Mike and Mindy’s car
Believes the fiction that he was better than Mike at everything — sports, love, farming, fatherhood

Jean Episode List Rough Draft
What I learned doing this assignment is that going through the sets help me plan out a rough draft of the eight episodes of the first series. I know it still needs a lot of work, but it feels good having something down on paper.
1. Beginning……………………………………………………………………….Season End/Cliffhanger
Question A: What is the Beginning of the season and the End of the
season?Into the intrigue of a secret agency of time-traveling agents where a new recruit learns the ropes of fixing the past. Also, a rogue agent is bent on stopping her and they don’t know why.
Question B: What possible cliffhanger could be in that last scene of the
season, thus demanding that we watch the next season?A final confrontation in the Vault chamber. The rogue agent gets killed by the pylons but not Sharra. Instead, the pylons make a direct connection with her, a communion, leaving a bit of itself inside her brain. She tells no one. Vault life returns to normal, except for Lazarus. A clandestine meeting with Faolan reveals that both know it’s not over. A man watches Sharra from an internal feed and he’s angry.
2. Season 1 Mystery Set up…………………………………..………………Season 1 Mystery Solved
Question A: What is the mystery?
What is Vault Agency and why does Sharra have a connection to it?
Question B: How could the mystery be set up? What parts will be left out that must be solved?
Sharra touches the logo and gets a spark. Whenever she comes near the pylons, made from the same metal, they speed up and ‘reach out’ to her. She thinks it’s normal and says nothing.
Question C: What is the ultimate solution that the characters must work to discover?
Turns out it’s not normal and she figures this out when she gets surrounded by its particle cloud and it communes with her, leaving a bit of itself inside her brain.
Question A: What is the mystery?
How do they time travel and why?
Question B: How could the mystery be set up?
An agent saves a famous person in the past and then vanishes. The first time the recruit shifts, we see the process as it happens in her brain and to the pylons. After the mission is completed, she sees the new timeline and understands.
Question C: What is the ultimate solution that the characters must work to discover?
Sharra discovers the agents are from different time periods and have been alive a very long time, a benefit of shifting. After several missions, including the final one set up as a trap, Sharra gets the adrenalin high of shifting and is addicted.
Question A: What is the mystery?
A rogue agent uses others in an attempt to stop Sharra from joining the Vault team. When that doesn’t work, he personally gets involved and no one knows what his motivation is.
· Question B: How could the mystery be set up?
Sharra gets mugged outside the Vault Office and the contract stolen. Lazarus sends Tanner to retrieve the contract. The mugger is a nobody. Someone else hired him. Two investigations take place separately and without each other’s knowledge: Lazarus’s team and Faolan.
· Question C: What is the ultimate solution that the characters must work to discover?
Lazarus uses Faolan as a decoy rogue agent to lull the real one to relax his guard. Sharra sets a trap, using herself as bait. It works. His reason: a point of a failing system, pinning the blame on Lazarus
3. Journey begins……………………………………………………….Journey peaks, but continues.
Question A: Where does the Lead Character journey begin and end for this season?
Sharra: an innocent and naïve woman with no family to a hard-ass agent with a special connection to the Vault and a place to belong.

give you an idea also.Sharra: from honorable to deceitful.
From kind to a killer.
4. ……Layer….…Layer………Layer………Layer………Layer………Layer………Layer……Layer
Question A: What layers have you already discovered in your BW Framework?
Question B: Are there any other layers that you could think of?Vault Agency is a time travel agency that fixes the past to make the future better.

Two separate timelines: Faolan’s and Sharra’s– crossover and converge at the end.

Rob’s Episode List Rough Draft
What I learned doing this assignment is that I am still very unclear about the events and details of Season 1. I found this assignment really difficult and only managed to cobble together 8 episodes, which are all pretty thin, and don’t have a strong through-line holding them together. They feel more like a series of events – this happens then this happens – rather than a chain of cause and effect – this happens because that happened.
Hopefully it’ll come together as time goes by …
