    Rebecca’s Action Track

What I learned from this assignment is that by building on the Mission, Villain, and Hero tracks, using the action tracks, meaningful action scenes easily emerged as a natural part of the story.

    1. A. Fight (improvised object), Dangerous Situations (confronting villain despite 6 pistols pointed at him, Rescue (by the township constable), Torture (whipping)

    B. Pursuit, Fight, Shootout,

    C. Act I (sniping, verbal confrontation, stalking) Act II – invasion, threats, rape, beating, whipping, Act III – stalking, betrayal, death of brother, planned massacre.

    2- A. Pursuit (investigating, stalking)

    B. Fight (swords, physical, disarming, improvised weapons, boxing, whip, knife)

    C. Shootout (sniping)

    D. Rescue (jailbreak, arrest, going into the lions den, saved at the last minute.)

    E. Escape (hand-car, disguise)

    F. Competition – Bucholtz shows off expertise with a whip. Ragman shows no fear.

    G. Dangerous Situations (innocent bystanders at risk, somewhere full of enemies)

    H. Interrogation (intimidating, restraints)

    I. Torture (whipping, biting off ear)

    Action Scene Sequence

    1. WWI scene where Ragman stalks and picks off 16 German soldiers, leaving the 17th man, the officer remain alive.

    2. Ragman having to show id papers in the afternoon, when none needed in the morning.

    3. Bucholtz stops Ragman driving through town, they exchange barbs and threats.

    4. Bucholtz whips Ragman’s carpenter brother building barracks and leaves him for dead. Ragman save him from death.

    5. Ragman takes over projects, Bucholtz sabotages the delivery of supplies leading to verbal confrontation and Bucholtz showing off his expertise with a whip. Ragman grabs the whip, throws it to the ground, stomps on it.

    6. Bucholtz stalks Ragman’s wife Ludie and threatens her family. Ragman challenges Buchotz.

    7. Bucholtz and his men burst into Ludie’s father’s home, orders her brother taken out of the house and beaten, orders a younger guard to raper her 15 year old sister, as he knocks Ludie unconscious and rapes her. Ludie keeps it secret.

    8. Ludie aborts her child fearing Bucholtz the father. She throws it in his face when he confronts her.

    9. Bucholtz ambushes and arrests Ragman’s carpenter brother, whips him again despite his previous injuries, throws him into a cell with a sick prisoner.

    10. Ragman, shotgun in hand, bursts into the jail followed by another brother, a boxer, with fists ready to strike. They take on the jailers, weapons fly into a horse stall, fists find their mark, the jailers end up locked up in the cell.

    11. Escape from town with the prisoners on a railroad hand car.

    12. Ragman takes on a lackey of Bucholtz, Bernard, accusing him of seducing Ludie’s young sister. The young man betrays his boss and tell him Bucholtz is the father. Ragman, triggered, runs out of the house before he kills the boy in anger.

13.Ragman goes to the police barracks and confronts Bucholtz. Surrounded by coal and iron police pointing guns at him, Ragman takes on Bucholtz. Seconds from death, the township constable intervenes and arrests Ragman to rescue him.

    14. Bernard defects to Ragman bringing with him Bucholtz’s note book with a plan to end the strike by massacring Ragman’s boxer brother along with the other protesting miners and their families.

    15. Violent moves by Bucholtz thugs disguised as miners against scabs guarded by the coal and iron police. The miners struggle to keep things peaceful by showing solidarity singing union songs. Bucholtz arrives on horseback pushing through the crowd using his whip to get near to the rally leader. Ragman in disguise hope to get close enough to use a knife on Bucholtz before he shoots, a signal to his men to open fire. Ragman gets shoved backwards and pushed away, he grabs a brick from his pocket it an hurls it at Bucholtz’s head. Bucholtz shoot missing his target as the horse rears up, dumps Bucholtz, and tramples his head.

Subject line: Joan Edwards’ Action Track

What I learned doing this assignment is it’s good to be able to keep the hero’s actions and the villains actions in your head to play on; then on the other hand, it’s good to be open at the time you’re writing these ideas to keep open for new ideas that are really good to pop into your mind and get on paper.

    1. Answer the Action Questions:

    A. Considering the concept from
Lesson 1, what action could naturally show up in this movie?
    Breaking and entering
    Hogtying someone Hogtying someone
involves tying their hands and feet behind their back, then binding their
    wrist and ankle cuffs together
    Competition
    Escape
    Interrogation

    B. Considering Bladen’s mission is to con Ansaca to get even with him
from when Anasaca conned his parents out of their house and savings in a
    little bank in Bleakville, Oklahoma.

and Villain mission is to keep Bladen and others from
breaking into his bankd but mostly not to get papers and cash money and
other assets hidden at his home. He puts a price on Bladen’s head and
orders him killed if he is caught inside the bank.
    Tracks, what action could work
    for this track?
    Competition
    Capture
    Escape
    Interrogation
    Chase/Pursuit
    Dangerous Situations
    Fight

    C. How can the action start well, build in the 2nd Act, and escalate to a climax in the 3rd Act?

    1. Purpose of Scene: Get empathy for Bladen and his family Back scene of Bladen and his parents being kicked out of home and foreclosed on.

    2. Purpose show skills of Bladen Years of homelessness. Scene of students making fun of Bladen for sleeping in car. He learned to defend himself. Man in neighborhood taught him Tae Kwon Do

    3. Purpose to show more skills with knives and darts Scene at restaurant chopping things in fine little pieces. Bladen as adult works with Security Systems.

    4. Purpose Inciting Incident Bladen disguises as man who is unable to go to Banker’s Convention. Bladen overhears Ansaca’s boast about his bank and residence being safe from anyone and he would kill anyone who passed the security points. That he had heard that someone from the neighborhood he shut down had information to put him in jail. He said they will never get him. He had people in high places and people hidden who would stop anyone from breaking into his bank or his home. No one, especially not anyone from that decrepit neighorhood could get him arrested.

    5. Purpose Show skills of Bladen outdoing skills of Ansaca. Bladen investigates the security company that set up the security. He’d seen them a few weeks before. Knew what kind of set up they were known for. Broke in and stole secrets to locks on Ansaca’s place..

    6. Purpose to build excitement and wonder if Bladen can actually get in there and steal the documents in the bank and in Ansaca’s home. Breaking and Entering – bank in disguise want to see safety box in vault – while in there gets bank papers that prove Ansaca’s guilt in the oversell of mortgages

    7. Purpose to Show strength of Ansaca’s men but his own personal cowardice in that he sends others to do his work. Ansaca sends people with higher degrees of skills to try to stop Bladen, but fails.

    8. Purpose to show cleverness of Bladen. Bladen mummifies all of Ansaca’s men at one place.

    9. Purpose to show clever disguise of Bladen. CAPTURE: Ansaca kidnaps who he believes is Bladen. And relaxes at the beach thinking everything is okay. It was a fake Bladen that he kidnapped. And real Bladen gets inside vaults. He makes mummies out of the guards.

    10. Purpose to Show Bladen’s strength and skill. Bladen pins them to the wall with his knives and daggers in another place with ropes and huge double-sided cellophane tape

    11. Purpose to show how Bladen uses all his resources to congregate at the right placer and time to arrest Ansaca with all the documents he needs. Finds word that Ansaca killed someone and is put in Federal prison in the top gated place with no getting out ever.

    Cameron Martin’s Action Track!

What I learned during this assignment is…To let go a perceived rule I’ve had regarding story telling. The rule was you could have complex characters, a complex world, and a complex plot, but in a two hour movie you could only pick two of those conventions. In all honesty, the plot is always simple. It should be like a GPS. No matter how crazy things get, the audience is never lost because they can refer to the main plot or mission of the story (The Matrix: Neo must ascend to a higher consciousness and become the One). I was thinking about The Dark Knight and how Batman only moves away from his mission once in the film. It’s always been to protect Gotham, save Gotham, leave Gotham is a better place. Sure, he wants to be with Rachel. He doesn’t want to be Batman anymore, but his loyalty is to Gotham first. The only time he chooses a different path (choosing to save Rachel instead of Harvey Dent), he’s punished severely for it. Rachel dies, and the consequences of his abandonment of his quest come back to haunt him in the form of Two Face. Therefore, the underlying theme is any story is that those who don’t stay committed to their goals are punished.

Long story short is, when I have time, I need to go back and assess what all I have. Not just with this track, but the others as well. And I need to make sure that there is a consistent simple plot idea, and that all conflict arises from that one idea. Otherwise, too many ideas make for a story that has no idea what it’s trying to say.

    A. Considering the concept from Lesson 1, what action could naturally show up in this movie?

    <div>

Cyborg/robot fight scenes. Different augmentations and abilities being used. Nanotechnology as living/shapeshifting weapons.

    <div>

    B. Considering the Mission and Villain Tracks, what action could work for this track?

Set ups and payoffs to each successive villain, building in difficulty for the hero, requiring a greater level of problem solving, teamwork, and character transformation.

    C. How can the action start well, build in the 2nd Act, and escalate to a climax in the 3rd Act?

The action starts small and relatable, teaching a little at a time. Then the second act provides a proof of concept for the ideas learned in the first act, while also twisting those ideas on their head. Finally the third act is a culmination of everything learned in the previous acts. An example of this may be the “Avatar: The Last Airbender” series, where many of the martial arts styles evolve as the series progresses. Waterbending in particular starts off simple enough, but new information and ideas as to where water can come from and how it can be used changes the initial concept of Tai Chi manipulating water into something much more insidious by the end of the series.

    1. Defend: Calvex defends a stranger from a group of random thugs. He gets his ass kicked over and over, but just keeps coming until the bullies leave.

Purpose- Show where Calvex is at the beginning of the story and an essential part of his character. Reveal something about the world and its morality.

    2. Kidnapping: Calvex witnesses his wife, Dawn, being taken from him. Calvex tries to fight back but fails and is easily killed.

Purpose- Demonstrate how helpless Calvex is against the greater forces at play in the world. What drives Calvex for the rest of the story. Reveal the Afterlife Protocol and how it works.

    3. Competition: Calvex competes for the assignment of Hunter-Guardian, so he can enter Abaddon, the Underworld, and bring Dawn back to Arcadia. Calvex, along with other Guardians, compete in a virtual reality that showcases technology that allows them to possess different machine. Calvex wins against the other Guardians, but Adam doesn’t pick him.

Purpose- Show how far Calvex has come and is willing to go for his wife. Shows his determination and growth in skill, as well as how the possession technology works. He may stand a chance, if he were selected to go.

    4. Stealing: Calvex steals the technology that was intended for another Guardian. He augments his body to become a cyborg. The alarm goes off and he fights his way out and into Abaddon, leaving Arcadia behind.

Purpose- Calvex is willing to put his home and life with Adam at risk to be with his wife and bring her back to life. With the new possession tech, Calvex is a force to be reconned with.

    5. Ambush: Calvex fights slavers and loses.

Purpose- Demonstrate how dangerous the underworld is. Calvex can’t get cocky. The possession technology alone isn’t enough for himself to travel safely through Abaddon.

    6. Failed escape: Calvex faces off against other augmented persons under a gladiatorial arena. The other gladiators want his augmentations, thinking it’ll get them into Arcadia, the heavenly city. He tries to escape, and one of the participants helps him. But Alrick, the leader of the arena pit stops them with a shapeshifting, nanotech axe. The participant who helped Calvex is selected for the Lightning Run.

Purpose- Establish a mysterious woman as a potential ally. Calvex needs help and he may have found it. But he’ll have to save her first if he wants to continue his quest.

    7. Gladiator: Arena combat. Calvex fights the other contestants while the mysterious woman runs the Lightning Run, a death race where the racer is electrocuted to run against his/her will. Calvex is able to save the mysterious woman, while also removing the collar that was preventing her augmentation from working. She can control a mechanical monster with her voice. “The Giant Tamer” and Calvex are able to overpower Alrick and escape. Calvex takes the nanotech axe from Alrick.

Purpose- Show the variety of Augmentations in the underworld. How brutal a place it is. Calvex is willing to put aside his convictions for the woman he loves. Shows what “The Giant Tamer” can do. Gives Calvex an upgrade.

    8. Sparring: Janus spars with herself and demands sacrifices.

Purpose-Give greater detail into the complexity of Janus’ character complications and powers. She can be in two places at the same time!

    9. Slayer: Calvex and the Giant Tamer fight and capture a beast guarding the forbidden city ruled by Janus. Adam intercepts with his robotic angels to stop Calvex from following the Giant Tamer.

Purpose- Make audience question motives of the Giant Tamer. Show Giant Tamer and Calvex make a formidable team against both the forces of “Heaven and Hell.” Calvex’s actions are turning him away from the god he’s sworn allegiance to.

    10. Trap: Calvex is trapped by Janus and the Giant Tamer, who turns out to be Cavlex’s wife, who can be under Janus’ control. Calvex battles for his soul against both Janus and Adam in a place called the Nexus where the Afterlife Protocol is platformed, as Adam tries to use the trap to his advantage. Calvex’s wife is able to save him, but at the cost of her life.

Purpose- Reveal Janus’ true power and both Janus’ and Adam’s true intentions with Calvex. Reveal the Nexus as a third realm where Cavlex may lose his life permanently. Also shows the Nexus is where souls are stored as data for the Afterlife Protocol before their reincarnated into a new body.

    11. Battle for Arcadia: Calvex and Janus, along with the forces of Abaddon they’ve gathered, clash with the defenses of the heavenly city. Calvex’s battle with his fellow guardians is much more brutal and final than their original sporting competition. Janus’ possession of persons grows her to an army.

Purpose- Calvex and Janus’ meek side see the destruction wrought against innocents, which brings the question of the cost of their quest to bear.

    12. Heaven’s Wrath: Adam brings down satellites from Earth’s orbit like meteors on his city.

Purpose- Adam is more concerned with maintaining his position of control than the subjects he does control. He’s willing to burn it all down before he give up control of the Afterlife Protocol.

    14. Civil War of the Mind: Janus’ other side fights back against the vengeful side to save as many people as she can.

Purpose- Janus’ growth. She’s tired of her dark side justifying the destruction of innocents in the name of an “ends justify the means” mission of taking over the Afterlife Protocol.

    15. Confrontation/Offer: Calvex confronts Adam in the Nexus after his body is finally destroyed. Adam offers to let Calvex’s wife live, if he helps to stop Janus. Calvex complies and starts reincarnating in each of Janus’ mechanical bodies and destroying it until there’s no more left.

Purpose- Calvex is willing to sacrifice humanity’s freedom so that his wife may live.

    16. Redemption: Janus and Calvex are stuck in the Nexus. Adam won, as neither may pose a threat in the cyberspace. Calvex recognizes that Janus’ and Adam’s code are the same, and that he has the same code imprinted on him from when he first stole the possession tech. Calvex, realizing his wife, Dawn, can’t truly be free with Adam, sacrifices himself by initiating a self-delete protocol, which destroys all his code in the Nexus, including Adam’s and Janus’. The Afterlife Protocol works without interference from Adam, and Calvex’s wife is reborn in a new world.

Purpose- Calvex will sacrifice a life spent with his wife so that she may live.

    Dwight Tincher’s Action Track

What I learned from this assignment is that this is a great way to establish a really good starting outline from which to work.

    Action Questions

Considering the concept from lesson 1, what action could naturally show up in this movie?

A marine battle where our hero’s sharpshooting skills win the mission. A confrontation between our hero and the elephant poachers. The hero and her team chasing the wild beast. Attacks from other predator animals during the search. A second confrontation with the poachers during an elephant hunt. A battle with the giant beast with the beast coming out on top and disappearing. A final confrontation with the beast leading to his demise.

Considering the mission and villain tracks, what action would work for this track?

The beast attacking a lone young tribal hunter in the dark. The poachers attacking a herd of elephants. The giant beast attacking safari caravans and watering or resting herds. An escape and attack by the elephant poachers. The poachers starting a second elephant attack. The beast chasing down our hero’s team.

How can the action start well, build in the second act, and escalate to a climax in the third act?

I’ll start with the beast attacking the tribal hunter at night to introduce us to it and scare the audience but it won’t be clearly seen. Next I want to use the marine battle where our hero’s skills not only win the mission but seriously injure her former friend now turned traitor. This traitor will later turn out to be the head poacher’s boss Then we’ll have the poachers attacking the elephant herd followed by our hero’s confrontation and capture of the poachers. This will establish the poachers as lacking any morals and establish our hero as a proper hero. I’ll finish the first act with the beast attacking a resting safari caravan, this will be the inciting incident to bring our hero in on the mission to kill the beast.

I’ll build on that in the second act with a second attack of a safari by the beast to show his brutality and further establish the need to kill him. Due to logistics our hero’s team must take along the captured poachers as they start tracking the beast, this add difficulty to the beast hunt and sets up later action scenes. At the second attack site we are introduced to our hero’s father. We learn why he is important to the mission and how he actually killed one of the giant beasts years ago. The team has to camp down for the night as a storm rages overhead. During the night, they are attacked by snakes and lions, I’ll admit this is some gratuitous action but it also establishes just how dangerous a situation they are in. After the attacks, the poachers escape and in a shootout kill and injure members of our hero’s team and disable their transportation and communication, this heightens the stakes for our hero as she must find out some way to proceed and eventually succeed in her mission.

In the third act, after the hero’s team has tended to the wounded and repaired their transportation they give chase to the poachers. This time they catch up with the poachers before they have started to attack the elephants. There is a battle between the poachers and the hero. The lead poacher is stomped to death by the elephant pack herd leader. The hero has a one on one battle with her former best friend turned traitor who was financing the poachers all along. After a fierce battle our hero kills the traitor, this sequence ends the threat from the poachers and scores a victory for our hero in one of her missions.. Just when it ends the beast shows up and gores the pack leader and lifts it over it’s head before throwing it to the ground. The beast then attacks the poachers transportation before turning its attention towards our hero. She fires off a shot and hits it in the leg sending it tumbling down before getting up and hobbling back into hiding, this establishes the beast sheer strength but at the same time exposes a slight vulnerability. The hero’s team regroups and pursues the beast and in the final confrontation, more of the hero’s team are injured before the beast is killed in a fireball explosion, this is sequence is used to culminate the mission.

The types of action I use are chase/pursuit, fight, shootout, rescue, escape, and dangerous situations.

The sequence of the action scenes is pretty much as described in the three act breakdown as is the purpose of each scene.

    Ramelle’s Action Track

What I am learning is that Action should provide movement, the evasion of existence for the Hero.

    A) SetUp Scene: Cinnamon is on the hunt to resolve the truth in her father’s death who she has no idea was a top hired assassin. The fight starts after she becomes a top Prosecutor, determined to put away bad guys. So to some criminals, she is a threat. Her life becomes a target after she tries to take down; Todd Rodrigo, a known drug lord, and her boss/lover ends up dead. On a brisk, bright Monday morning she gets out of bed, puts on her robe, washes her face, brushes her teeth and walks to the kitchen and hears a latch open, and goes to get her gun out of her living room drawer. Let the games begin.

    B) Dangerous situation: She sees an image, a man dressed in black clothing, a burglar; she shouts “Hey” and the image runs, she comes out of her million-dollar home as to shoot and the person runs off. She call 911; what a morning to have to protect her life and property.

    C) Interrogation: The police come to her home of course Cinnamon is known by her profession as a leading Proscuter so the Chief Police Lawrence Buchanon is there to assist. He askes her the question about who she saw, at this point, Cinnamon starts having (PTSD) thoughts of the car crash that killed her dad and remembers seeing someone in dark clothes pulling her to safety out of the wreckage when she was only 5 years young. Could this be the same person? Why would they run from her home?

    D) Competition: The whole incident has Cinnamon nervous, anxious and upset; so she goes to the closest person she can talk to and that is (Villian?) Chay Johnson (mother). She drives in a black Porsche 500 to her mother’s palatial home and wants to know the truth. Her mom (Villian) says she doesn’t remember because the memories of Grover dying has caused painful memories. But Cinnamon (hero) says she needs to know about her father, and Chay is mum about the issue even getting upset with her daughter (Cinnamon) and asking her to leave. Cinnamon feels she is at a dead end but will find the truth on her own.

    E) Torture: Cinnamon must put a plan in motion to find out about her father, Grover on her own as well as who killed her stepdad, Rick, are the rumors true that her mother may have had both men killed due to her being a Lead Detective. What are the answers?

    Wayne’s Action Track!

Doing this exercise I learned to use previous exercises as a resource.

1 George, female, 1st grade, eyes closed hearing voice taunting her. She opens eyes. No lips are moving. She is hearing what they are thinking.

FIGHT. She lashes out with a punch to the eye of the biggest tormentor, a boy.

Purpose: Introduce George and her power to read minds.

2 WHY FIGHT? Teacher asks her why she hit him. She says she didn’t like what he was thinking. Is that a reason to hit him? Yes. Did it change what he was thinking? Definitely.

Purpose: Standing up to bullies is a good thing. Establish how she knew exactly word for word what the bully was thinking. “That’s exactly what I was thinking but I didn’t say it.”

3 GEORGE WORKS OUT. Grown up 20 something George is a reporter. Big into marshal arts of all kinds. Refuses to report on crime, police, politics, or the intelligence agencies. She is afraid she will loose her temper. She works out a lot.

Purpose: She knows how bad people are and it’s getting to her. Especially if they are cops, politicians, or intelligence (CIA, FBI, NSA…)

4 AT HER BOILING POINT Her boss interviews a police department spokesman. George overhears what the spokesman is really thinking. When he’s gone George can’t help herself. George exposes what the spokesman was really thinking to her boss: Shocking, somewhat incoherent. Her boss has had sexual involvement with the spokesman.

Purpose: George is a ticking time bomb about to expose… everything, loose her job, and get in police trouble. She knows too much.

5 INCOGNITO DOING DAMAGE, FUN George goes vigilante incognito exposing thoughts of powerful players. She has multiple disguises and ploys to get in the presence of corrupt evil political crooks, cops, etc.

Purpose: She desperately wants to expose a rotten system but fears she is powerless to defend herself if they find out who she is and what she knows.

6 NEW POWER. George follows a bad guy to his boxing gym. Looses her temp. Gets into MMA fight with a cop. MENTALLY TAUNTS him with his own thoughts. It is a powerful and disarming weapon.

Purpose: She discovers how to TAUNT, (send her thoughts, mixed with his own, into the mind of another.

7 AN ALLY / LOVER George and her mission is detected by an admirer.

Purpose: This initially threatens George but then she teams up, emboldened, funded, and fondled by a like minded activist.

8 BRAVE SAVAGERY. George goes deep into reporting. She develops a character. She reports as if it is humor. Satire, but it is true. Get huge audience.

Purpose: She wants to expose truth but have less risk.

9 EXTREME ATTACK. Some of her “victims” join forces and put out hit contracts. Police, Mob, Politicians, all seek an early death for George’s mystery reporter (Her disguised brave reporter).

Purpose: The truth won’t set you free, it will get you killed.

10 DESPERATE RETREAT. This is a rotten super power. It only leads to her demise. Is everything so corrupt that there is no place safe for a hero willing to expose the truth. Knowledge without power is a dangerous thing.

    Tarina’s Action Track!

“What I learned doing this assignment is…?” This was hard for me… I don’t know whether I tried to put to much detail in or whether it was because I am not sure of the characters and story or if it just was because I did not have had time to write properly for the past week with Christmas, family etc. In the end I decided to just finish it with holes etc. so that I can move on to the next assignment and come back later to this as it is still the first rough draft.

    A.
Considering the concept from Lesson 1, what action could naturally show up
    in this movie?

    B.
Considering the Mission and Villain Tracks, what action could work for
    this track?

    How
can the action start well, build in the 2nd Act, and escalate to a climax
    in the 3rd Act?

    1. PANIC: Shows secretary, bodyguard, and driver busy on the internet in the morning or night before the attacks. They kind of stare into the screen blink for a long moment and continue as if nothing happened.

Several world leaders and influencers are assassinated by people they know and trust. Chaos erupts all over the world in the matter of hours (as seen on news bulletins)

A secretary suddenly throws her boss off the balcony looking dazed afterword’s not understanding what she had done.

He looks triumphantly back at the news monitors in front of him showing the events unfolding in the world. “Now nothing can stop me” People in chambers and being drugged and experimented on can be seen behind glass.

Purpose: It gives us a glimpse at the man behind the attacks.

    4. EVADE: It shows Nina evading and fighting free from her attackers. Confused she flee to safety; her heart is clearly racing she is trembling and anxious. Fighting to catch her breath she gets dizzy and pass out. She comes to with voices of concern from strangers around her. She pushes the people away and get to her feet stumbling away in a daze. Three men are seen around her – confusion, concern and anger in their voices and behaviour.

She comes too and are still confronted with her mother’s voice and the flashes. Vomits. Some more memories from her past. She explains to the men what happened. Diana T. Black…Action Track
What I learned doing this assignment is the importance of identifying and analyzing the action elements and charting the course of action – not only to recognize as to what constitutes action, but also determine whether they are integral ot the narrative (or not), and the structure of the narrative arc – that it’s hitting all signposts etc. The narrative seems much stronger because of it.

    Initial Concept

A Lead Firefighter moonlighting as a criminal investigator, is on the verge of discovering a crime syndicate when he takes the rap for a crime he didn’t commit;- presenting his unknown adversary an opportunity to destroy him and his family.

Actions that will show up in this narrative

    Chase and Pursuit

    Fights

    Shoot-outs

    Rescues

    Escape/Evasion

    Dangerous situations

Actions associated with the Mission and Villain Tracks

    Mission Track

As a Firefighter and the Captain of his unit, Keylan Millar must have a high level of proficiency in physically demanding situations – saving lives, rescue operations, and fighting fires. Moonlighting as a criminal investigator for his friend the DA – Adrian Tanaka, along with the disappearance of his girlfriend Louise, under bizarre and extreme circumstances, sees him having to fight to save his own life, and save and/or rescue others in peril. Keylan is driven by a need to serve and “fix” things – to a fault… this is a Character weakness – that of taking on the woes of the world and feeling guilty if he doesn’t devote his time to this (harboring guilt from the past).

    Villain Track

His adversary (The Villain) – Assist DA Dominic Tarrega, who’s identity is unknown to Keylan and the Audience for most of the narrative (a 6-episode mini-series) will force Keylan to fight for his life, save others in his inner circle (and beyond) – all of which leads to an eventual mano-a-mano between them and a fight to the death. Once Dominic steals the money from the Trust, murders Keylan’s girlfriend Louise, then upon learning that Keylan and Louise are connected, he hatches a plan to get Keylan out of the way – the set-up with the fake Louise (a look alike) who’s apparently absconded to Acapulco, Mexico – forcing Keylan to locate and confront who he believes to be Louise. Dominic offers to help Keylan on his quest to Acapulco, supposedly by providing back-up (Inter-pol). Dominic sees that the Louise look-alike is murdered, and attempts are made on Keylan’s life while he’s in Acapulco. When those attempts are unsuccessful. Dominic frames/implicates Keylan regarding the theft of the $2M – in the bench trial after Keylan has stepped up to take the rap for a crime he didn’t commit (Victor’s death) . Dominic intends to have Keylan murdered while on “the inside” so that he cannot discover Dominic’s (and Nicole’s) crime.

The build into the “2nd Act”, and the escalation to a climax in the “3rd Act”.

This is a 6-episode mini-series and thus the 3-Act structure is not only required within each episode but also across the entire narrative arc. It is also an “Action-Thriller” therefore elements of Action must include life-threatening situations that involve mystery, suspense, and intrigue.

Initially Dominic doesn’t know why his criminal operations as new head of the syndicate seem to fall through/falter. Keylan has managed to stymie the criminal operations (through anonymous leads… given via Alfonso, but he cannot determine the head of the syndicate. All the leads run cold.

With the disappearance of Louise and the $2M funds stolen, it sets Keylan on the path to determine whether Louise absconded with the money and thus he must locate and confront her. He discovers she’s been replaced with a look-alike who informs him that she doesn’t have the money. She’s killed before she can reveal who put her up to this deception. He escapes with his life spared and that’s a mystery in itself. He returns to LA, at a loss and angry/upset.

When Victor goes off the rails and commits suicide in a fire situation – dying in Keylan’s arms (arrived too late to save him from 3rd degree burns), Keylan is consumed with guilt and takes the rap for Victor’s death. The Judge delivers a sentence of 3 years in prison on an involuntary manslaughter charge. Only Roslyn can “save” Keylan by telling the truth and Keylan won’t beg.

With Keylan imprisoned, the hits/stymieing of Dominic’s criminal operations cease. It’s then that Dominic realizes Keylan must have been involved in investigating the crime syndicate.

Keylan still hasn’t realized that Dominic is the newly-anointed head of the crime syndicate.

Keylan has to fight other inmates who’ve been enticed to kill him with the offer of reduced prison sentences – they fail. Those that try end up in the prison hospital.

Keylan is exonerated. Now out of prison and reinstated he continues his investigation – it seems to point to Dominic. He can’t believe it. However, he’s determined to deliver justice regarding the theft of $2M and the murder of Louise, the fake Louise, and the attempts on his own life.

His need to bring Dominic down is critical with the abduction and brutal attack on his son, Reuben.

Now he’s out for cold-blooded revenge. It will be a fight to the death mano-a-mano.

List of Action Scenes for this Six-Episode Mini-Series – major beats only

Action: Keylan and his team of fire-fighters (that includes Victor) are fighting a fire – Keylan
rescues Victor – who’s being reckless. The building is gutted. They mop up operations and
    return to the firehouse.

relationship existing between himself and Victor, and the team.

Action: Keylan investigating a criminal operation, gets a tip-off about a sex-trafficking operation with the victims being loaded onto a ship – he stops it in time and the girls
    are rescued.
<b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Purpose: To reveal that Keylan is an undercover investigator for his friend, the DA – Adrian, who feels he cannot trust anyone else. That there is a syndicate and that he doesn’t know who heads it.

Action: While waiting for Louise to arrive in Hawai’i Keylan breaks up a bar fight then retires to his Hotel room. She never arrives.
<b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Purpose: Set up and reveal the theft of funds and the fact that now Louise is missing and
    presumed murdered.

Action: “Louise” has sent a post-card to Keylan stating that she’s waiting for him in Acapulco, with the money.
    <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Purpose: Revealing Keylan is walkinbg into a trap

Action: Keylan is attacked by the “nterpol team” and survives. They die in a car accident. He makes it out to the yacht, attacks the two male crew members and pushes their assumed unconscious bodies overboard. He discovers that “Louise” is a fake. One of the surviving crew kills her and attacks Keylan, but his life is spared.
<b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Purpose: To reveal/shed light on the deception (perpetrated by ???) and the fact that he’s failed to discover where the money is gone or the fate of the real Louise. Sets up a mystery as to why he’s still alive.

Action: The highly intoxicated Victor commits virtual suicide in a fire situation. Keylan, late to the scene – Victor dies in Keylan’s arms. Keylan is gutted at the loss of his closest friend. He swaps Victor’s blood sample for his own. P<b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>urpose: Keylan swaps the blood samples so that he’ll be charged with “intoxication on duty” rather than Victor. That way Victor’s reputation will not be sullied and Victor’s daughter will receive the insurance pay out.

Action: Keylan, despite the mounting evidence accrued by Keylan’s Defense lawyer, Emma
Kendrick, pointing to Keylan’s innocence, he refuses to co-operate, swears all of his fire-
fighting team to secrecy, and takes the rap for Victor’s death. Dominic ”reluctantly”
throws the book at him. The Judge (bought by Dominic) delivers a verdict of guilty for
involuntary manslaughter and sentences him to 3 years in prison. <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Purpose: A turning point where Keylan is about to suffer a terrible fate.

Action: Keylan now incarcerated, has to fight for his life after several attempts are made to kill him. <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Purpose: Someone is out to get Keylan and we learn that Keylan is not only superior in a fight, but he also has friends willing to “go inside” to help him, which alludes to the title of the narrative.

Action: Keylan once exonerated, continues his investigation and is on the verge of discovering the identity of the crime syndicate when he gets word from his ex-wife that his son, Reuben has been abducted and according to the ransom note, faces death at the hands of the syndicate if Keylan doesn’t back off. Keylan gets a tip-off as to where his son is being held.. No police with the exception of Robin Marshall will support him (and he was ordered not to get involved). They fight their way into the syndicate’s strong-hold and rescue Reuben – who’s battered and traumatized. Keylan learns (while bashing up one of the Syndicate members) that Louise’s body has been dumped in the shipping channel out to sea from the LA port facility. <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Purpose: Keylan’s love of his son. His willingness to sacrifice all to save him. The possible involvement of Nicole (Keylan’s ex-wife) in Reuben’s abduction.

Action: Keylan mounts a rescue operation to retrieve Louise’s body and is attacked en route. <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Purpose: That Keylan and his loyal team (except for Patrick Ward) are first-class Divers who can easily mount a Search and Rescue operation.

Action: Alfonso has a secret meeting with Adrian Tanaka, and reveals he’s been the source of
information fed to help/save Keylan. He requests that Keylan go easy on his boys. <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Purpose: Some questions are answered- Alfonso has been helping Keylan stymie Dominic and Torera’s criminal operation and saved Keylan’s life on the yacht in Acapulco.

Action: Keylan discovers clues that indicate Dominic and his ex-wife, Nicole are behind the theft of the $2M, Torera abducting and assaulting Reuben. Keylan attacks them – killing Torera. Dominic and Nicole flee. Keylan pursues them, determined to get revenge on them. <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Purpose: Keylan’s moral code of conduct is under modification. He’s no longer bound to just delivering justice, but to get revenge.

Action: Keylan and his team are called to a fire situation in the middle of the night. He gets
separated from the rest of the team. Patrick is going to kill Roslyn. Keylan fights him but Patrick escapes with Keylan in pursuit. Patrick tries to justify his actions regarding Roslyn and reveals his paymaster before tripping/stepping backwards into an inferno. <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Purpose: Roslyn is “saved” from Patrick’s abuse. Keylan now sets his sights solely on Dominic.

Action: Keylan and Reese catch up with Dominic and Nicole. Dominic in order to save his own life executes Nicole. Keylan doesn’t stop to render assistance and pursues Dominic. The few of Alfonso’s boys who Dominic coerced into supporting him retreat (under Alfonso’s orders). Dominic mortally wounds Reese. Keylan is torn between rendering assistance to Reese and pursuing Dominic. He goes after Dominic who pretends to surrender. He wounds Keylan but Keylan also wounds Dominic. While Keylan is duty-bound to bring Dominic in, it will take little provocation to kill him it will be a fight to the death. <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Purpose: The culmination of the
    battle between Keylan and Dominic.
