    Emmanuel’s Transformational Events

What I learned doing this assignment is each act should have a transformational event. The hero must go through a series of events from the start to the end of the movie. Once the hero moves from the old way to the new way, there is no turning back. The hero’s consistent journey will become extreme as he becomes more competent.

    Lisa’s Transformational Events

What I learned doing this assignment is to use certain events to make a gradual change in the Protagonist’s character. I believe in him more now.

    David Sterling Old Ways:

Alcoholic, drinks himself to sleep every night

Lets life live him, doesn’t feel in control of his circumstances

    Lets Mayla run the show

    David Sterling New Ways:

Hopeful of a better future with his kids

Does whatever he can to find his kids

Knows what he wants, and doesn’t let anyone get in the way of that

    Changes that need to happen:

See that Mayla is the enemy

Accept his new fate, as an opportunity to see his kids again

He needs to become more disciplined to fight for what he wants

He needs to adjust to being a human in a dogs body

He needs to learn basic survival skills

He needs to connect to his senses and use new ways to find his kids

    Stand up to Mayla

    Save his kids

Transformational Events:<div>David is in the afterlife and is shown the abuse that Mayla is doing to his kids, but is told he can’t see his kids again unless he goes back as a dog

David is abandoned and adopted by a family who treats him like a doll

Charlie, his one true companion, dies

David sees his kids with their mom but they drive away, and he doesn’t know where to find them

David uses his doggy senses to try and locate his kids

Sees Mayla fleeing the house after setting it on fire. He bites her, but she drives away

David goes into a burning building to save his kids, but gets trapped once they get out of the house. Will he survive.

Mayla is sent to jail, and David gets to live with his kids as a loyal companion for the rest of his days. He values his time with them more than ever.

    30 Day Class – Day 6A

    Lee’s Transformational Events

What I learned doing this assignment is…That my story continues to evolve and grow as I add new things. This lesson made me think a lot about what the story is REALLY about.

Concept – After her scientist father is kidnapped and vanishes without a trace and the authorities act as if he never existed, Millie, a young teenager, and her friend Justin set out to find him, guided only by the vague words of her dying grandma.

Main Conflict – Milly’s father’s been kidnapped for his unique inventions that will give megalomaniacal general Janus virtually limitless power. Unbeknownst to Milly, she’s literally the only one who can stop him.

Old Ways – Milly thinks of herself as just a normal person, and a shy, quiet, small one at that. There’s nothing remarkable about her at all

New Ways – Milly is actually a powerful alien human with amazing abilities—if she’ll accept that fact and believe in herself.

Steps to getting from Old Ways to New Ways

    – Knowledge of what the new ways are. She’s really an alien human with incredible powers, but refuses to believe it. <div>

    – An event that takes Milly out of the normal routine.

    – A challenge to take initial action.

    – An act that compels her to take action:

    – Utter failure of the Old Ways: Milly has to try something different or quit.

    – A new plan is devised, incorporating use of some of Milly’s and her father’s powers.

    – Milly needs to hit rock bottom: The new plan fails. Milly’s utterly discouraged, angry, defeated.

    – A catalyst to become her true self, stop resisting and start believing.

    – Milly becomes her true self by letting go of her disbelief and fear and embracing who she really is.

Four Act Structure – with Transformational Events

    Act 1

Opening – Milly’s going through a normal day. She’s close to her father, who calls her “my darling little alien,” her friend Justin, etc. We find out that her mother died years ago. Mention is made of her father’s intricately made toys. Transformational event 1: Gets angry when Dad calls her “his darling little alien” and repudiates what he says about her.
Inciting Incident – Milly returns from school. Transformational Event 2: Dad doesn’t come home. She calls the police. There’s no record of his name or who he is. They want to take her in. Transformational Event 3: She calls Justin. He says why don’t they go look for him then. Milly says that’s crazy. </div><div>

Turning point – Transformational Event 4: Next day, Milly’s Granny Sue shows up. So do unknown assailants. Granny tells Milly where her Dad is, and she’s the only one that can save him. Assailants close in. As Granny holds them off, Milly and Justin must leave or be killed. Granny insists they take Dad’s toy collection, say magic words. Granny’s killed as the two go.

    Act 2

New Plan – Milly and Justin snag Justin’s Dad’s credit card, then leave town on his dirt bike (or car).
Plan in action – Transformational Event 5: They crash the dirt bike, run out of gas, etc., buy bus tickets, but none stop where they have to go. Milly experiments with “using her power,” but has no success. Janus has men shadowing them. He’s also got Milly’s dad busy in a secret lab. A giant tank becomes no bigger than a toy.
Midpoint Turning Point – Transformational Event 6: Milly discovers that if she says “the magic words” while holding one of Dad’s model toys, it becomes life-sized and real.

    Act 3

Rethink everything – Using the vehicle and weapons that were once toys, Milly and Justin make it to their destination. </div><div>

New plan (using New Ways) – Milly and Justin attack the compound where her Dad’s being held. At first, success, but when General Janus has them where he wants them, he says “a magic word” and all of Milly’s new-found equipment turns back into toy size again.
Turning point; “All is lost…” Huge failure/Major shift – Transformational Event 7: Milly and Justin are captured.
Transformational Event 8: Milly’s mom is in the cell with her. She reminds Milly of who she really is—and how much she’s needed now.

    Act 4

Climax/Ultimate expression of the conflict – Transformational Event 9: Milly makes full use of her innate powers to defeat General Janus and destroy his plans. </div>

Resolution – Milly embraces who she really is…but still keeps it a secret.

    Lesson 6 – Transformational Events

Fran starts as a Socialist supporter who’s anti-gun use and ends up saving her daughter from a forced abortion from the new Maoist government by way of shooting it out with the Antagonist.

    Old Ways:

    Believer in Socialism

    Suburban mother and therapist

Conformist to progressive views; wanting to please her friends

    Anti-gun activist

Thought the Maoist approach might work

    New Ways

Sees the reality of what socialism means when she loses her house and belongings and is sent to resettlement/re-education camp

Separated from her daughter by the new regime and unable to practice her profession

Starts to question the effectiveness of this approach ; sees how people really act in this situation

Realizes she may have to use a gun to save her daughter (since the regime uses guns to impose order)

Sees the truth of the Maoist fallacy; resettling people/reeducating them is inhumane and inefficient

6-8 changes or steps that need to happen for the character to go from who they are in the beginning to who they are in the ending.

    1) Realizes movement is not nonviolent but willing to use violence to achieve goals

    2) Realizes the movement is not just theoretical but a true revolution

    3) Realizes she will have to pay a personal price in this revolution – loss of home, separation from daughter, loss of profession, relocation to farm

    4) Tries to buy into it but sees reality of the farm’s failure/idiocy

    5) Starts to voice opposition/tell the truth/help other farm residents/effort to save daughter

    6) Realizes she has to stand up, escape, take up arms against movement (and Antagonist) to save daughter – needs training and partners to help her achieve goal.

    7) Is willing to risk her life for escape to a different future

    Transformational events:

    1) At anti-gun rally Antagonist convinces Fran to help provide material. She doesn’t realize it’s for a bombing. Instead of Church, Antagonist bombs a Taco Bell. Lives and tacos are loss.

    2) When called before Judge, Fran exhorts “tacos for all, not just the rich.” He realizes she’s a theoretical Socialist so lets her off for “good intentions.” But the Antagonist blows him to pieces, demonstrating the movement means total annihilation of the old order.

    3) Antagonist and goons confiscate Fran’s house and resettle her to a farm where she will be re-educated. She balks, saying she’s black, but Antagonist says she lives in the wrong zip code. No exceptions. She’s separated from daughter.

    4) At farm, tries to use her skills to make things works – please others, be compliant. But sees what a joke the whole thing is. Nobody knows what they’re doing and the farm fails. Some people don’t do any work; others do it all. Re-education is ludicrous. She has to come to grips with the Truth. But when she does, she’s thrown to the masses and beaten up.

    5) When she finds out her daughter (living elsewhere) is pregnant and the regime wants to abort her baby, she trains in the use of guns, devises a plan to escape and save her daughter and future grandchild.

    6) Executes plan but it fails. She’s about to be killed but son in law brings in guns, they’re able to rescue Fran and her daughter. Fran kills Antagonist and they escape to other state. She loses all her belongings but has her freedom and the future grandchild she saved.

What I learned: Need to come up with more specific dramatic events to showcase transformation. Plus they need to be funnier to make this satire work effectively.

    Ying’s Transformational Events

What I learned- I didn’t learn that much this time, since I think I learned most of it in our last lesson.

    Ying’s

    Old ways –

    1. Follows Tradition

    2. Believes Strength is most important leadership skill

    3. Won’t kill with sword

    4. Feels Ting is a better leader

    5. Miss trusts Huaxia

    6. Lacks confidence to contradict Ting

    7. Uses traditional war/fighting strategies

    8. Knows little about Huaxia and their war strategies

    New ways –

    1. Treats Huaxia as individuals

    2. Forms alliances with Huaxia and rival tribes going against Ting’s advice

    3. Learns new war strategies (Act 3 of 4)

    4. Fights with a sword (Midpoint)

    5. Gains confidence in herself

    6. Stands up to her brother to lead tribe

4 Act Transformational Structure with Transformational Events

Concept- Ying, a young warrior princess, goes from insecure follower of her older brother to confident tribal leader

Main Conflict- A Chinese warlord is determined to wipe out Ying’s tribe

Old Ways- The tribe fights other tribes and distrusts all Huaxia

New Ways- The tribe creates alliances with neighboring tribes and other Huaxia leaders.

    Act 1:

Opening- The tribe in peace. Trades with Huaxia and by ship with other areas of Asia. Sun is named lead commander to bring all native tribes under Chinese control and for them to pay tribute. He starts attacking the Xian tribe.

Inciting Incident- The tribe’s leader, Ying’s father, agrees to peace since he feels it is better than fighting a protracted war. Sun sees the strength of the Xian tribe as a threat. So, Sun uses the peace treaty meeting as a deception to allow him to murder Ying’s father. Sun thinks Ting and Ying too young to lead the tribe and no one else is suitable.Turning Point- Ting and Ying decide to lead the tribe, but Ying acquiesces to Ting as her older brother who embraces the old ways.

    Act 2:

New plan- Ting and Ying lead a guerilla resistance (Old Way)Plan in action- The guerilla attacks are working but they don’t allow the tribe to trade as in the past which makes the tribe poorer and poorer. Sun is determined to finish the tribe off with one great blow.

Midpoint Turning Point- Ting attacks a tax shipment thinking it will make the tribe rich again, but the shipment is only a decoy to take all the warriors out of the village. Meantime, Sun’s forces attack the tribe’s village. It is burned to the ground and the tribe barely escapes genocide by retreating to an old tribal redoubt that Ying had refurbished for just such an emergency. Ying uses sword to defend tribe.

    Act 3:

Rethink everything- Ying sees that the tribe is not strong enough to win using old ways.

New plan- Ying creates new alliances with rival tribes and a nearby Huaxia governor who is a rival of Sun’s.

Turning Point: Huge failure / Major shift- Ting attacks Sun thinking he can win by strength alone. He does not realize that this is exactly what Sun wants. Suns weakened force has gotten massive reinforcements from the emperor. Ting’s attack fails terribly and his best friend and Ying’s lover Long is killed.

    Act 4:

Climax/Ultimate expression of the conflict- Ting leads a retreat back to their home territory. Ying senses a trap and stands-up to Ting. She recommends doing something Sun would not expect, retreating through a narrow canyon. With Ying’s new alliances, this will be their best hope of survival. If she is wrong, the tribe will be trapped and all the warriors killed. Still, the warriors side with Ying remembering her wisdom of refurbishing the redoubt that saved the tribe at the midpoint.

Resolution- Ying uses the constriction and sheer cliffs of the canyon to her advantage allowing the tribe to successfully hold off a much larger army. They need only hold them off until dark and the tribe’s warriors can melt away into the darkness. They will at least survive to fight another day. All still seems to be lost as the Huaxia force is just too great to resist, when the rival tribes that Ying has befriended show up to reinforce Ying’s tribe and defeat the Huaxia. Ying does not kill Sun (Old Way), but uses Sun as a bargaining chip with the emperor to sue for peace. Ting graciously acknowledges Ying’s leadership skills.

    Pat’s Transformational Events

What I learned: The idea of letting go of perfection and not even worrying about including bad ideas was reinforced. The bad ideas led to better ones, and I’m beginning to see a story unfold.

Ivy’s old ways: She lives a lie, as a conservative, set-in-her-ways senior citizen to cover up her outlaw past and present. Lonely, but won’t admit it to anyone, even herself.

Stern and standoffish with her granddaughter.

    New ways:

Spontaneous and content with her life. Open to new relationships, if not love. An honest relationship with her granddaughter and everyone else important in her life.

    Transformational Steps

    1. Ivy takes a look at the online dating profile that her granddaughter set up for her and sees Victor’s photo – the man with whom she’d robbed a bank decades past.

    2. Ivy contacts Victor, indicating interest to meet with him.

    3. Ivy and Victor meet, he not knowing who she really is, and she invites him to stay in her guest house so they can get to know each other better.

    4. Ivy searches through Victor’s belongings in order to find out the state of his finances.

    5. Ivy reveals her true self to Victor, telling him she intends to blackmail him if he doesn’t give up her cut of the bank robbery money, plus interest.

    6. Lilly’s granddaughter, Lilly Miller, confronts Ivy with evidence that Victor may have been involved in the town’s legendary bank robbery. Lilly wants to enlist Ivy in getting Victor to turn himself in.

    7. Ivy and Victor have a sit down to discuss how to handle Lilly’s evidence. Ivy begins to realize that Victor is possibly suffering from dementia.

    8. Guilt ridden over living a life of lies, Ivy admits to taking part in the robbery and is ready to do what she must to right her past wrong.

Dramatic events that could cause changes in the character.

Ivy is just about to delete her unwanted online dating profile when she gets a “like” from Victor, whom she instantly recognizes.

Ivy and her granddaughter, Lilly, argue over the wisdom of having Victor stay in Ivy’s guest room that’s off of the garage.. Ivy accuses Lilly of being a hypocrite. Just as the word “hypocrite” leaves Ivy’s mouth she catches a glimpse of herself in the mirror.

Ivy’s daughter, Iris, returns home from yet another stint in rehab to discover Ivy rifling through Victor’s belongings.

In the assisted living home where Ivy volunteers, a resident tells Ivy that she was once shot in a bank robbery. Thinking this woman has next to no memory left, Ivy says, “I know. I’m the one who shot you.”

Cold-hearted against Victor, Ivy’s attitude starts to change when he sees her petting a dog and admitting to the dog that sometimes he has a hard time even remembering his name.

Victor gets lost at night and wanders into Ivy’s bedroom, thinking he found the bathroom. (What might happen next will either be romantic or embarrassingly awful, such as Victor peeing on Ivy’s bed.)

Lilly decides to do a school project, where she and friends will re-create they town’s legendary bank robbery. Lilly wants Ivy to portray the woman who was shot.

When Ivy tells her daughter Iris that she can’t stay in the guest room because Victor is there, and that Iris can make do in the basement, the expression on Iris’s face causes Ivy to realize her own selfishness and that she may indeed be a cause of Iris’s persistent drug problems.

Iris learns that her daughter wants to investigate.

After having too much to drink at a dinner with Ivy, her daughter and granddaughter, Victor starts to babble about the bank robbery. He talks of a woman named Rose who participated in the robbery. (Ivy’s name had been Rose. She changed it after the robbery.)

Lilly discovers the name of the woman shot in the robbery and goes to interview her at the assisted living home. This woman informs Lilly that the shooter is the lady who brings the pot brownies every week, that being Ivy.

Dramatic events will be added to my outline after my tired brain (up all night with a dog who had the runs, fun stuff!) I felt it was more important to do the bulk of the assignment and get it turned in.
