    David’s Show Empathy/Distress

What I learned doing this assignment is the necessity of creating deep empathy and distress for your characters. It’s a vital ingredient to a show’s success- the more, the better.

    ASSIGNMENT ONE: RIVERDALE empathy/distress

    1. Jason’s murder rocks the town

    2. Generational blood fued between Cheryl’s parents and Betty’s

    3. Archie forced to choose football or music

    4. Veronica moves into town, a pariah due to her dad

    5. Jughead’s dad framed for murder

    6. Archie ruins relationships, his parents divorced

    7. Jughead has no where to live

    ASSIGNMENT TWO: FALL RUSH

    A. Undeserved misfortune. Steve cheats on Emily. Steve suspended for year. Emily’s fired from job. Dean sabotages her plan to start sorority. Mean sorority girls make fun of Emily. Lindsay’s estranged from her.

    B. External Character conflicts. Emily and the dean battle over control of the house. Steve and Emily separate. Emily and Lindsay don’t communicate. Emily and mean sorority girls. Unintentional: Lindsay gets caught up in her struggles.

    C. Plot intruding on life. Her class is difficult and she’s been out of school for 20 years. Her boss is a tyrant who ends up firing her. The dean does everything in her power to get the house back. A professor flirts with her. The sorority has only one member, is failing.

    D. Moral dilemmas. Should Emily serve girls alcohol? Should they retaliate against the dean/other sororities? Should she give Steve another chance? Should she quit her job/find a new one? Should she date her professor?

    E. Forced decisions they’d never make. Stand up to Madison in class. Tell off her boss. Ridicule the dean. Go after the other sororities. Throw parties to spite the dean, other sororities. Tell Steve to fuck off.

………Layer Agents from Earth/Sigma are also looking for the Mysterious woman

………Layer Bruce runs into one of the victims who lost her memory. He gives her sage advice not knowing she was a victim and thought she was on a life-journey.

..……Layer One of the Agents looks to get a promotion at the expense of procedure and looks to get results in anyway possible, even with the a life taken if necessary.

………Layer The Mysterious woman proves hard to catch and she is dangerous too if she uses the tech on unsuspecting victims. But her motive is unclear.

……Layer Bruce seems to be caught in a trap that would show him to be know about the TECH a lot more than he seems and blowing his cover but the MYSTERIOUS Woman saves him and tells him he has been to EARTH/SIGMA 2619 before and somewhat helps him piece together some of the gaps in his memory.

    C. Main Conflict: Alien must consider who is his friend and make alliances or go it alone.

Can the Mysterious woman really be a friend? Who is the female Agent with the hidden past? Is it right to help the victim if you didn’t know who she was at first?

    E. Cliffhanger: Bruce gets saved by the MYSTERIOUS WOMAN.

Summary: SEASON 1 Bruce is an alien sent to earth called SIGMA 2619, based on star year Earth was discover and named after the Emperor at that time. Bruce arrives after a signature technology that monitors the emissions that are emitted point him to a city in North America. As he monitors the situation he finds out there are 2 agents dispatched from a secretive agency to capture the woman responsible. They call her the Mysterious Woman. Bruce tries to navigate earth but gets helps from an elderly man who is blind thinks he is a immigrant that just doesn’t know US culture rather than him being an alien.

    Season 2:LEARNING TO SWIM

    A. High Concept or major hook of the season. The Alien Bruce quickly adapts to Earth or Sigma 2619 by talking daily with a blind man, who mistakes his for an immigrant instead of the Alien he is.

    B. Big Picture Arc/Journey: Bruce is adapting to Earth, not just his environment but the people live here and learns how their rules work.

    C. Main Conflict: Bruce playing the middle between the Mysterious woman and the Agents.

    E. Cliffhanger: the Agent who is willing to sell out everyone get his chance.

Summary: SEASON 2 Bruce is getting his earth knowledge by trial-and-error, who to trust: possibly the agents but it comes with a price: exposure of his TECH or who he maybe or at least whom he is working for. The earth advisor, aka the blind old man guides Bruce to take some extra courses at a community college a few nights a week. In the class he meets Snowy who he met in the first season. Going back to school, even for an advanced alien proves its difficulties as Bruce feels drained he is introduced to everything from energy bars, smart classmates, coffee pills (after coffee) and even marijuana ( which has a hilarious effect on Bruce). During the day time Bruce is dealing with the Mysterious woman who is only leaving slight clues about her moves or none at all. And the agents go from clueless to hostile toward anyone working with them and making them look like fools. Bruce at the end of the season finds the lead agent is almost willing to risk the lives of those around him and maybe even his partner to catch the Mysterious woman as the season ends.

Summary: SEASON 3 Bruce opens the season with deciding not to help the agent catch the Mysterious woman at the risk of the female agent. The female agent instead of turning on her fellow agent secretly starts to like Bruce, even though she is not sure his actual identity. They strike up a conversation at a coffee shop and meet there almost every 2nd day as they start their days. It is lite conversation. She does notice Bruce is studying for a class and offers to help him indirectly. Meanwhile, Snowy and Bruce get closer until Snowy sees Bruce talking to the female agent and it look flirtatious to her. So Bruce is involved in what can be described as a love triangle, only Bruce never had one before. At the end of the season it seems the old man might not be so naive as he seems. And Bruce may have to show his TECH in trying to save Snowy who suddenly gets in some danger.

Season 4 WHO ARE MY ENEMIES?

    A. High Concept or major hook of the season. Another collector is sent from the homeward.

    E. Cliffhanger: the Mysterious Woman purposes to finish off the new collector or send him back for a price.

Summary: SEASON 4 Snowy is saved and Bruce is able to do it with the help of the Agent and both of them don’t realize it. But a big surprise happens and it is the form of a 2nd collector. This one is like Bruce but he has all his memory in-tact. He also seems to be more familiar with Sigma 2619/Earth than Bruce was when he arrives. And at the same time the other agent who seems very uncooperative with getting outside help. Namely Bruce’s help directly or indirectly turns out to be a bit of difficult person so much Bruce might have to use his TECH to put him down. And to end the season with the Mysterious woman who comes to Bruce and proposes to finish off the collector and or the agent and show Bruce who he really is as he gets more and more of pieces of his memory.

Season 5 TIME TO FIGHT BACK

    A. High Concept or major hook of the season. Bruce is sure those who sent him are the ones who robbed him of his memory to protect the TECH.

    B. Big Picture Arc/Journey: Bruce instead of being a collect starts to fight back against the home world.

    C. Main Conflict: Against the Mysterious Woman who now has enemies it is revealed.

    D. Mystery/Open Loops: Can Bruce flush out the Mysterious Woman with her enemies in pursuit? Who are the Mysterious Woman’s enemies? Who was the 2nd collector before coming to Sigma 2619? Can people be redeemed (one of the agents or the 2nd collector or the Mysterious woman)?

    E. Cliffhanger: All secrets are revealed, what Bruce feels for Snowy. Who the Mysterious woman really is and how she knows Bruce! And with more memories does Bruce want to really find the TECH? And will he allow the TECH to be copied? Can it be copied?

Summary: SEASON 5 Bruce doesn’t take the offer of the Mysterious wholly to finish off the 2nd collector cause that will bring the Empire’s people in full force upon Sigma 2619. Bruce is seeing almost no choice but to work with the Mysterious woman as she offers to tell Bruce who he really was before he lost his memory and asked for this assignment to show the Empire he is worthy. Meanwhile, the agents might have made a big breakthrough just as the female agent is on the verge of quitting the “agency” and telling Bruce how she really feels Snowy surprises Bruce at the coffee shop and is already sitting with Bruce for a last-minute cram session before his test. Bruce finds out who the old man is who has been helping him. He is an ex agent who was sent over 50 years ago but decided to retire on Earth then go back and even raised a family. The final blow to this final season is when the Mysterious woman says it is a waste for Bruce to get his memory back fully because the people that sent him are really his enemy and he in fact is responsible for the TECH be stolen and sent to earth to keep it ‘out of the hands’ of bad people.

    ASSIGNMENT 1:

    Summary

An alien is sent to earth and doesn’t know who to trust as he hunts for THE TECH, a technology that needs to be retrieved from dangerous people who may be using it to control the minds of humans, giving them skills to rob banks and wiping their minds when they are caught. A mysterious woman is accidentally discovered near and around each one of these incidents by a pair agents who are hot on her trail only they don’t know her next move.

As Bruce takes on SIGMA 2619’s custom he is tracing the residue left after THE TECH is used that leads him to a bar where he tries to take on local SIGMA 2619 habits, but this night is unlike any other with Bruce as he faces a college frosh week challenge and thinks he can outdrink humans in a human body without eating for two days that quickly falls flat and mixing in a state-allowed marijuana blunt called the “super” Susan result in a wacky trip into Bruce subconscious where the woman he is hunting stands next to him but being under the influence he thinks it is a dream never drank or smoked before that he is really the person who had THE TECH to start with and he sent this mysterious woman to get it.

Hearing a pounding he wakes up in a girl’s frat dorm not knowing what was real and what was not real. And outside the agents he was following that gave him the info about the Mysterious woman are now knocking outside the frat dorm he has woken up in. This is the end of the first season/pilot.

    2. Investigate by picking situations and characters and asking:

Tool 1: Dig: What’s beneath that?

-How does Bruce feel day to day? Is he optimistic or just plain hate Sigma 2619?

-Does he feel he is closer to solving who the Mystery Woman is?

Tool 2: Extrapolate: If Bruce gets involved with Snowy, then it changes a lot of how he will go after THE TECH.

-If Bruce listens to advice and takes courses at a community college then he might value Earth people of STIGMA 2619.

-If Bruce gets involved with the female agent, then it will change how she does her investigation.

-If Bruce gets involved with the female agents, then he might like to stay on Stigma 2619.

    Tool 3: Wonder:

-What if the Mysterious woman is telling the truth to Bruce?

-What if Bruce’s bosses send someone unexpectedly to work with him or in competition with him?

-What if Bruce’s bosses send someone to kill him/Snowy/one of the Agent/Mystery Woman?

    Tool 4: Backtrack:

-How could Bruce have been to Earth already and hid THE TECH have happened?

-What happens if Bruce already had set up enough information to give to the agents indicating THE TECH needs to be protected?

Tool 5: Forecast: How could this get even worse?

Bruce will reconcile that the agency he is working for is pure evil to erase his memory.

Bruce will have to play the game until he is in a position of leverage/ sabotage.

-The agents see him as a threat/ catch him sabotaging their work?

-Snowy finds out who he is?

-The Agents find out who he is?

-The Mystery woman is lying and she is very dangerous?

-The Mystery woman is telling the truth and her and Bruce do know each other?

    3. Evaluate the possibilities and decide what you are going to use in the different parts of your TV Pitch Bible. Divide the answers into three categories:

Use in TV Pitch Bible-keep handy

Use in Episodes. Definitely use and may it out with time lines in shows.

What I learned from this assignment is that I have to keep asking what if questions, then find answers to the questions.

Tool 1: Dig: What’s beneath that?

    – Intro of Hitler’s genes to be sold in U.S. – What’s behind this?

Santiago want’s power – he wants to clone himself after he has perfected it

    – Intro Victoria and and Kayla, their love interest – what’s behind this?

Kayla is in awe of the royal family and wants to get closer, even though she keeps saying it’s the environment a child grows up in, not their genes, that determines their true being

    – Intro Proffessor Matthews, and him being a Druid – what’s behind this?

He’s been excommunicated from his Druid community in England and will use Victoria’s genes and the DNA from Bran The Blessed to return triumphantly

    – Intro Victoria’s hassle with Safety over Profit when market is going well – What’s behind this?

A financial crash occurs and Victoria’s investment in American farms with good water pays off – this leads to her involvement with Jimmy Gregory and the white supremists

Tool 2: Extrapolate: If Santiago’s cloned humans succeed, then he can clone himself, with improvements.

If Kayla switches her eggs for Victoria’s, then Kayla’s child will be raised as a royal

Tool 3: Wonder: What if Professor Matthews was kicked out of his English Druid community and stole the skull of Bran The Blessed and replaced it with someone else’s?

Tool 4: Backtrack: How could Hitler’s genes have made it to Buenos Aires?

Tool 5: Forecast: How could this get even worse?

    1. A financial crash takes out Victoria’s funds

    2. Victoria has Santiago clone a race horse so she can get back into good graces with the royal family but, after one great win, it dies

    3. Kayla thinks she has beaten the curse but she loses her Everglades case

    4. Sir George

    3. Evaluate the possibilities and decide what you are going to use in the different parts of your TV Pitch Bible. Divide the answers into three categories:

    Use in TV Pitch Bible.

    Don’t use.

    4. For any parts where there is a substantial improvement, rewrite those parts of the TV Pitch Bible. Then, tell us what parts you changed and give a quick description of what you did.

I changed Victoria and Professor Matthews living in New York instead of England. The professor was excommunicated from his Druid faith and wants to use Victoria’s genes and the DNA from Bran The Blessed’s skull, which he stole from England, to return and claim his rightful place with the Druids. – This is similar to tales of past kings banished only to return and win their kingdom back -The mystery is, why was Professor Matthews banished?

Since Victoria now live in NYC instead of London, Kayla visits, giving her a chance to find out more about her father, whom she never sees. The mystery is, why doesn’t her father ever see her? Since her father is a banker, there is now the possibility of Victoria and Kayla’s father having some kind of financial involvement, with conflict, deceit, treachery and theft all possibilities.

Binge Worthy – Mod 2, Lesson 7 Investigate my show

    Tool 1: Dig: What’s beneath Paige’s behavior?

I think there’s a 20-year-old man (she’s 16-years-old) encouraging her to do interesting things. Like stayinf away from home for two days without telling her parents where she is; trying Ecstasy; confront her mother regarding her attraction to Savage; seduce Savage in front of her mother; kill a cat; kill a person.

Tool 2: Extrapolate: If Pagie does any of these “suggestions”, then how does she feel about herself, or about him?

Tool 3: Wonder: What if she does the less radical does it make her more interesting?

Tool 4: Backtrack: How could her meeting of him have happened?

They met when she was running and twisted her ankle. He stopped to help her. They had an immediate attraction.

Tool 5: Forecast: How could this get even worse? This could lead to Marta’s being arrested.

    3. Evaluate the possibilities and decide what you are going to use in the different parts of your TV Pitch Bible. Divide the answers into three categories:

    Use in TV Pitch Bible.

    Use in Episodes.

Don’t use. Maybe too this makes Paige too dark which takes the story not a dark place.

    Jean’s TV Pitch Bible Investigation

What I learned doing this assignment is that there is always more to discover. I wasn’t sure what it would be or where the ideas would come from. But I let it stew around when I got stuck and came up with some cool ideas I can now use.

    2. Investigate by picking situations and characters and asking:

Tool 1: Dig: What’s beneath that?

Memory block: Used on Faolan to forget that he’s responsible for his clan’s death. He asked for it though Lazarus protested. Since then, Faolan lives without a past and thus no attachments.

Her photographic memory spots the clues in the maps that her mission is not of this time but of London of 1825.

The Vault facilities has room for hundred more agents and is now a ghost town.

    Tool 2: Extrapolate: If __________, then ____________.

Sharra’s co-worker at the firm is actually J.D. Dash on a recon mission to stop her from first contact with Vault agency but actually causes it. Jeremy is a guy he met at a bar.

Tool 3: Wonder: What if ______________?

The assimilation chamber is tampered with, reprogrammed by J.D. Dash. Set to kill Sharra. The second dose of agrylium sets off the alarm, warning others of the problem and saving Sharra.

What if Sharra does create a time ripple and an agent gets killed during it?

What if to stop the paradox, the Vault has to die but before they can do that, they have to fix whatever tragedy that had originally made them join the Vault, to begin with.

What if when they do the big reset, Grayson, who is the cause of Sharra’s downward spiral gets committed to a mental institute because he has visions about the Vault and all that has happened.

What if the entity has seen the whole story play out and plays it back to Sharra when she enters a pylon.

What if the entity calls Grayson into the Vault, though he thinks it’s by chance, to spur on its cause.

Tool 4: Backtrack: How could ______________ have happened?

How did Grayson get assimilated without anyone at the agency knowing? Just like with Sharra, the entity is behind it. It wants both there for its own purpose.

How was the Vault created? Lazarus found a piece of agrylium buried on his property(put there by himself in the future) and it connected him to the entity. He is shown his timeline where he will be killed by his uncle or another timeline where he becomes the Head Director of Vault Agency and all that entails. He chose to live.

How can Lazarus’ coverup be revealed? Agents start going crazy(brain shift) and Lazarus has to come clean to explain the phenomenon.

Tool 5: Forecast: How could this get even worse?

Every time Sharra saves someone, someone else gets hurt or killed.

Every time Sharra tries to fix her mistake, she makes it worse.

Sharra has to fight against the brain shift craziness and make the ultimate sacrifice, her life, to end the entity.

    Episode 2:

Sharra gets her first mission assignment as a courier in London. Her photographic memory spots the discrepancies in the map and she figures it out. Not to London of now, but to 1825. She’s going to ‘fix’ time! Vault agents are time travelers!

    Episode 6:

Tanner takes Sharra to his own timeline to his mother and sister’s
gravestones, to what he can’t change. Sharra lies about tampering with her past
    family.

    Episode 8:

Together, they fix the ripple, freeing the stuck agents from harrowing situations, but Grayson witnesses them shifting out and he realizes who she is – a future Sharra. When Sharra is back at the Vault, she learns that agents had died and she caused it.

Season 4: I’ve added a few ideas together at the end:

Grayson forces Sharra into the pylons in a fit of madness. She takes him with her but it kills him. But not Sharra. Inside the pylon, she discovers the true nature of the lifeforce and that it needs to ‘feed’ off electromagnet energy to survive. It chose her from all of time to help it.

    In season 5:

Mess with time too long and it will eventually mess with you. Agents start going crazy(brain shift) and Sharra makes the connection between the entity and the agrylium in their heads. Lazarus has to come clean to explain the phenomenon.

Lazarus discovers that Sharra has unwittily set off a paradox that will
    wipe them all out.

Sharra has to fight against the brain shift craziness and make the ultimate sacrifice, her life, to end the entity and finishing the reset.

    Janeen’s TV Pitch Bible Investigation

What I learned doing this assignment is that I was telling stories before even though they were based on the “intriguing” bits from the BW Framework. Ignoring the stories (cause, effect, circumstances) and just focusing on the actions shortened things considerably. The questions helped to make things a bit more exciting.

    4. I changed the later seasons to include more intrigue — usually romantic/interpersonal drama rather than criminal activity. Betrayals don’t have to be illegal.

I also shortened a LOT based on NOT TELLING STORIES. I had given context to nearly all of my story threads since they are heavily interwoven. I can’t tell 1 character’s story and have interesting episodes as different characters figure heavily in storylines at different times. Eliminating context and cause allowed me to provide the intriguing bits with more brevity.

Module 2, lesson 7. Investigating my bible.

I spent the weekend brainstorming for hours at a time and now feel so excited by the new ideas I have come up with to improve the story.

I had an unknown murder victim from the start. I have her a name, what she wanted and then realised the opening and closing of my pilot episode would be great with her in it. Another smaller character that didn’t have much personality (daughter of main character), suddenly became someone that could have a very interesting character arc. She could rise up and take over an organisation from her Grandfather. I picked apart all of my characters and found more ways to make them empathetic (even the antagonists) and ways to create more conflict in each of their relationships. ie. Zoe had a sister. I started to ask what if the sister was trying to help rebuild Zoe’s relationship with her mother but kept getting it wrong. What if Zoe got the strength to visit her mother after years of not seeing her and then she is rejected all over again. what if I build up to them meeting each other, and the mother cancels at the last minute. what could be a really horrible, nasty way of a mother rejecting her daughter? what if Zoe’s husband was really wonderful when she first met him? what if Zoe was successful to start off with, then lost her confidence? What if our antagonist, Leo, loved children? what if he was not the one to order the hit on Zoe’s family but was just part of the organisation and owed them? I delved more into Alex’s character and asked what moral dilemmas could I give him? he was running for senator and his party controlled. him and told him to get rid of his girlfriend – she wasn’t ‘wife’ material. he dumped her, he felt bad. He decided to secretly see her again. and then I thought about a hook – what if the girlfriend was working for the opposite party and was a ‘spy’?

    Rob’s TV Pitch Bible Investigation

Ok, so I’ve been nutting out some more of the elements of my story and have completely changed a whole lot of stuff. Primarily, I decided I had a whole lot of story in the later seasons that I decided to bring back into Season 1, so I’ve brainstormed some different directions for the later seasons to go in. I’ve come up with a bunch of increasing threats and larger settings in which to place them, and condensed the stuff I originally had intended to be Seasons 2 – 5.

I’ve also merged a bunch of storylines into the main thread in the hope that it will have a stronger through line.
