Meg Stout’s Big Picture Open Loops

What I learned doing this assignment is to always do the assignment in a document editor rather than the forum website… so sad when all the work I’d done disappeared when something reset.

Seriously, though, I learned that it’s hard for me to initially discriminate between mysteries about the past and true open loops about the future, particularly when we won’t know about the past until some point in the future.

Also, since my work is close historical fiction with which I am unusually well-versed, it was easier for me to rattle off the big picture open loops than to brainstorm them.

    Assignment #1

    Thirteen Reasons Why

Big Picture Open Loops (Questions about the future)

? What will Clay do when he hears his own tape?

? Will Clay pass the tapes on to the next person?

? Will Clay attempt to get justice for Hannah?

? How will the information on the tapes affect Clay’s relationships with others?

? What will Tony (cool Mustang fellow) do if Clay doesn’t do what Hannah requested?

? Will the Bakers get enough evidence to pursue their lawsuit against the school?

    Assignment #2

    Children of Heaven (1840-May 1842)

*? Will Dr. Bennett be able to win his estranged wife back? [Or, once it is clear his wife won’t return to him] Will Dr. Bennett be able to marry Annie (and all questions that arise during the stages of courtship leading to his proposal)?

*? Will Annie find overcome her fears and find love?

*? Will Dr. Bennett be able to make his name and fame by becoming protector of the Mormons in Illinois?

*? Will Missourians continue to attack the Mormons (aka religious minority group) in Illinois or, related, will Bennett be able to establish legal protections for Mormons in Illinois?

*? Once we learn Joseph Smith believes he has a responsibility to restore biblical marriage practices (including plural marriage), How will Joseph Smith proceed to restore the practice of plural marriage?

*? Once we learn Dr. Bennett treats women’s hysteria using the ancient practice of genital massage, will this come to the attention of Joseph Smith, and what will happen?

Open loops that will open up later in the series

? Once we learn Dr. Bennett’s wife won’t grant him a divorce, what will happen when Annie finds out Bennett is married?

? After Bennett engages in rebound sex with his married landlady, what will be the consequences?

? After Bennett has been punished for his affair with his married landlady, will he give in to his sexual drives?

?When Bennett’s arrangement with the Widow Fuller (sex for food/money) is discovered, how will Bennett react?

?How will Annie react when she learns about the plan to restore plural marriage?

Emmanuel Sullivan’s Big Picture Open Loops

What I learned doing this assignment is large open loops keep you tuned into and watching each episode. More so if the big question has not been answered in any given episode. Doing this well, you can build in big loops in each episode to keep viewers engaged. The smaller loops help and often are answered within an episode or two.

    Assignment #1

    Show – The Americans

Philip and Elizabeth continue to have relationship issues; however, they have an understanding about their past, their current job, which leads them to become closer. But the demands from the job lead them back to questioning the strength of their arranged marriage.

    Big Picture Open Loops:

    · Will Philip and Elizabeth separate?

    · Will Martha get caught by the FBI for filtering information to Philip?

    · Can the FBI agent Stan Beeman keep his affair with the KGB agent a secret?

    · Will the Jennings children find out about their parent’s true identities?

    · Can the KGB Center keep the illegal agents safe?

    Assignment #2

Mark and Andrew are at odds over the design, funding and progress for the new foundation. They use their children, wives, and close associates to sabotage political issues to win points for their party. While the family is in the midst of two powerful political figures feuding, they also battle personal faults that stir further division.

    Big Picture Open Loops:

    · Will Mark and Andrew cancel the partnership?

    · Will the foundation earn enough to meet the family’s extravagant lifestyle?

    · The IRS issued an audit, will this affect the foundation’s future?

    · Will Mark separate from his wife Sarah?

    · Who will take over the vacant CEO position at the foundation?

    · Will Sarah find out about Mark’s affair and child?

    ASSIGNMENT 1

    1. Think about your Example Show. Make a list of the Big Picture open loops that were established early in the season.

    The Americans

Episode 1: Will they defect to America? Elizabeth covers up for Phillip with her superior; will she keep covering up for him, or will she get fed up? Was Stan placed across the street on purpose?

Episode 2: Will Viola Johnson’s son die? Will Casper Weinburger’s office realize the clock has a listening device in it?

Episode 3: Will Elizabeth continue her relationship with Gregory? If Elizabeth and Phillip divorce, with their children be taken back to Russia like Rob and Joyce’s child? Can Claudia be trusted?

Episode 4: Will Elizabeth and Phillip continue to be able to decern whether Moscow is over-reacting, or will they be sucked in, and help make a bad situation worse?

Episode 5: Will Nina get romantically involved with Stan? Is Nina the mole that Claudia has identified?

Episode 6: Will Elizabeth be able to continue working with Claudia after beating her up? There’s the moment when Elizabeth tells their captors that Phillip likes it in America too much; will Elizabeth and Phillip betray each other?

Episode 7: Will Phillip’s son that he had with Irina reenter the picture in the future?

Episode 8: Elizabeth finds out about Irina and tells Phillip she wants nothing to do with him anymore. Will they break up?

Episode 9: Will Stan find out that Phillip killed his partner, Amador? Will Martha be caught for passing information to Phillip? Will Phillip and Elizabeth get a divorce?

    2. Watch the next episode and see how those open loops are being used to create the need to see future episodes.

    Stuart’s Big Picture Open Loops

What I learned doing this assignment is… Moving ahead into this assignment with its focus on ongoing loops, allowed breakthroughs in my mysteries, a stage that felt a bit stalled for me. It broke me out of a “set” or right way, and allowed me to explore and investigate another right way. Ingraining in my memory, mysteries engage us with investigations and questions about the past. Ongoing loops build expectations and questions about the future.

    Assignment 1:

    Watchmen’s Big Picture Open Loops

Part 1: These were established early in the season:

    Who killed Judd Crawford?

How will Angela Abar stop the Seventh Kavalry’s plan?

Why is the Seventh Kavalry stealing lithium watch batteries?

Will Angela accept Will Reeves is her grandfather?

Who’s causing the squid storms and why?

Will Angela and FBI Agent Laurie Blake trust each other and work together to solve the case?

Why is Adrian Veidt trying to escape his paradise?

In what ways does Adrian Veidt connect with Angela’s case to stop the Seventh Kavalry?

Who has abducted Will Reeves and why?

Part 2: Watch the next episode and see how those open loops are being used to create the need to see future episodes.

It’s Episode Nine. Yikes, the final episode!

Will Senator Joe Keene take Dr. Manhattan’s powers and become the new blue man?

Will Adrian Veidt accept Lady Trieu as his daughter?

Will Angela stop the destruction of Dr. Manhattan/Jon?

What is the purpose of Lady Trieu’s Millennium Clock?

Will Adrian Veidt and Dr. Manhattan stop Lady Trieu from stealing Dr. Manhattan’s power?

Who will survive the frozen squid storm?

Since this is the final episode of the season, many of these open loops were closed.

A few open loops remain or are established:

Will Adrian Veidt face charges for murdering 3 million people?

Will Angela’s son, Topher, live inspired by Angela’s vigilante and costume identity?

With FBI Agent Blake and Wade as partners, is there a place for costumed vigilantes?

Will Angela accept Will as her grandfather and family?

Has Dr. Manhattan/Jon successfully given his powers to Angela through an egg? (will she walk on water?)

Assignment 2: Stuart’s Big Picture Open Loops:

A snapshot of the big picture open loops that could be in the pilot:

How did Hop-Frog become a street urchin – and why was he physically punished?

What is Hop-Frog’s gift that Maestra protects?

What is the connection between Hop-Frog and Trippetta?

Who are the beasts from the shadowlands, and how dangerous is their march to the Kingdom of Brattvia?

Who was behind the uprising at the slave auction?

Will Trippetta survive servitude under Lord Krapp?

What is Hop-Frog’s punishment for killing King Goplik’s Master of Ceremonies?

    Joe’s Big Picture Open Loops

What I learned doing this assignment is… literally digging down into these open loops, I’m creating my plot. It’s happening effortlessly. It’s a very effective means of creating obsession.

    1. Use this list to brainstorm big picture open loops for your first season that you will use to keep the audience captivated.

    GOALS:

New goals? Is Viva Komarov actually still alive? [and
is he still a part-time operative? Still involved in hiding the creation
of the town as a hunting ground?]
    Goals related to the big
    picture? Will Ruby be able
to keep everyone mesmerized and keep killing men in the creepy insect way?
Does she find out about the history of the town in the pilot (but we, the
audience, don’t find out, but we know she is awe-struck about some history
that upsets her, and that comes before her decision to kill.) Does Jody
want to make Ruby her lover and ally?
Crushed goals? Was Myra’s career crushed before Ruby
recommended her to the editor; so, Myra is in debt to Ruby.
    Competition / conflict around
    goals? Thor is in
competition with other cops to fuck younger women and the secret pool at
the department (that they have to hide). He’s in competition with his wife
who seems to be ruining his life; will he find out that she’s the
    murderer?

    CONSEQUENCES:

Are they going to be caught? Ruby. Thor. Myra. Curtis. Lula. Viva.
Rebecca. Jody. ALL ARE AFRAID OF BEING CAUGHT.
    What problems can
be created from past actions? Will
Ruby be caught, not only as the killer, but posing as the strong police
detective, when in fact, she’s a sham? Will Curtis’s past murder be
uncovered? Will Jody be found out to be born a man?
Good plans gone wrong? Will Ruby’s attempt to plant evidence
cause her murders to be uncovered by Jody, who agrees to hide her crimes if
Ruby will become her lover? Does this create and endless open loop between
them, where Ruby seems to flirt with her, but the actual consummation of
their relationship is left open (indefinitely?)

    SOLVING PROBLEMS:

What is the major problem for
    this character? Ruby was sexually
abused as a child, and maybe brainwashed by both parents (were they in on
the ground floor of the conspiracy to make the town a secret hunting
ground? Rebecca’s mental illness; will her parents and her teachers find
she’s faking and manipulating aspects of her treatment and symptoms?
What are they trying to solve? Will Curtis, Ruby’s partner, find out
that she’s the murderer? Will he expose her? Or, perhaps, we she co-opt him,
and give him a promotion, perhaps stepping back to give him for exposure, (and
give herself less?) is Viva still trying to get back at the architects of
the town who convinced him to get involved, demanding that they admit what
they did? Will the entomologist discover an important clue that points to
    Ruby?
    Major change imposed on
    character? Will Char see
through Ruby’s stories? Will Granger, the hit man, kill Ruby? Will she
figure a way (along with Jody) to switch evidence in such a way that it
points to someone else—who Granger then kills?
    Previous solutions cause new
    problems? Will Ruby’s acquiescence
to Jody’s desire cause her emotional trouble and pain? Will Ruby’s realization
that her father is not dead, but in fact, alive, and his involvement with
the creation of the town become an earthquake in her psyche, her
relationship with her mother and her position in the town?

    RELATIONSHIPS:

Relationships in peril? Will Ruby be able to continue functioning
as a detective and also stay the killer? Will Thor find out what she’s up
to? Will Curtis catch her in the act and blackmail her?
New relationships forming? Her budding faux-romance with Jody, her
partnership with Curtis; will they survive or become toxic?
Conflict inside relationships? Ruby’s relationship with Thor; will he
    catch her? Her relationship with her mother; will she turn on her? With Jody;
will she give into Jody’s demands for sex? Will Tavis, the entomologist
brought in to study the insect evidence at the crime scene begin to
    suspect Jody?
Relationships changing? Will Char demand the truth; will Ruby
spill it all to her friend? Does Ruby find out Thor is fucking Rarity, his
secretary? She indeed is a rarity in that she can fall into the ranks of
the older women in town being hunted, and at the same time fall in with
the daughters of those women, and other young women who the cops are
    trying to fuck.

    DANGER / SURVIVAL / RISKS:

Can they survive X? Can Ruby survive her murders of the
hunters of older women that she’s killing in incredibly creepy ways?
    Putting themselves in danger /
making dangerous decisions? Does Ruby fall in love with one of the rapists and spare
him at the last moment, and make love to him instead? Is that one more
relationship she has to keep secret? Does Jody get jealous of him and kill
him, and is she now a murderer too, forcing Ruby into her arms, or she’ll
give Ruby away, and threaten to kill more?
Who else is pulled into their
    danger? Are Ruby’s
mother, her father, her daughter, Thor, Jody, Curtis, Myra and other
    pulled into Ruby’s dangers?
    Internal dangers (drug
addiction, need for medicine, inner demons)? Is Rebecca pretending to be a drug
addict, then inadvertently, discover she likes drugs and become
one? Are they all drinking too much and using too many drugs?

    2. Tell us your top 5-8 Big Picture Open Loops that could be in your pilot.

a.) Will Ruby be able to keep killing men in the creepy insect way?

b.) Does Ruby find out about the history of the town in the pilot (but we, the audience, don’t find out), but we know she is awe-struck about some history that upsets her, and that comes before her decision to kill?

c.) Thor is in competition with his wife who seems to be ruining his life; will he find out that she’s the murderer?

d.) Will Ruby’s attempt to plant evidence cause her murders to be uncovered by Jody, the criminalist, who agrees to cover up those crimes if Ruby will become her lover? Does this create and endless open loop between them, where Ruby seems to flirt with her, but the actual consummation of their relationship is left open (indefinitely?)

e.) Will Tavis, the entomologist brought in to study the insect evidence at the crime scene begin to suspect Ruby?

f.) Does Ruby find out Thor is fucking Rarity, his secretary? She indeed is a “rarity” in that she can fall into the ranks of the older women in town being hunted, and at the same time fall in with the daughters of those women, and other young women who the cops are trying to fuck;, so she’s like a rare female species appealing to all and in danger from both groups.

g.) Is Rebecca pretending to be a drug addict to get treatment, then inadvertently, while on the street, discover she likes drugs and actually become an addict?

h.) Does Ruby fall in love with one of the rapists and spare him at the last moment, and make love to him instead? Is that one more relationship she has to keep secret? Does Jody get jealous of him and kill him, and is she now a murderer too, forcing Ruby into her arms, or she’ll give Ruby away, and threaten to kill more?

Daniel Melin’s Supernatural and Athens, MN Big Picture Open Loops

What I learned during this assignment is the value, not just of solving the questions posed by the past, but the ones posed by the future, and the value in setting up both independently. When I first looked at the five star model, I wondered what the difference between mysteries and open loops was, and now I know.

    Assignment 1—Supernatural

    Will
Sam and Dean find their father? <div>

    Will
they catch the thing that killed their mother?

    <div>

    Will
Sam continue hunting monsters or choose to return to normal life?

    Will
Sam repair his relationship with Dean and their father?

    Will
Sam and Dean survive their dangerous mission to kill what killed their
    mother?

    Assignment 2—Athens, MN

    Will
Tom and Mark lift Lizzie’s curse? </div>

    Will
Tom or Mark’s vision of magic prove superior?

    Will
Tom’s forays into magic actually make things better for him and his
friends or just make things worse?

    Will
Tom and Mark be able to help the other boys whom Lizzie has enchanted?

    Will
Miguel and Milly salvage their relationship?

    Will
Tom break away from his family and forge his own identity?

    Will
Tom, Mark, and Miguel survive the dangers of werewolves and magic curses?

    Will
Miguel manage to outrun his inner demons and control his anger?

Jane’s Big Picture Open Loops – What I learned doing this assignment is that by looking at how things are playing out in RIVERDALE, I’m able to start seeing my project a bit more clearly. Until I wrote down the big loops for RIVERDALE, I wasn’t really aware of the number of threads that were being woven together. Doing Assignment 1 really helped me see how these loops can be moved forward in each episode without actually ever solving them because they become the springboard for new smaller loops.

I’ve been seeing my characters on a very individual level and my attempts to make them connect have been pretty on-the-nose and trite. In this assignment, bringing the discovery of the dead guy (still don’t have a name for him) to the very first ten minutes of the show has really opened up some interesting ideas for me, including thinking of plots along the lines of THE USUAL SUSPECTS and MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS. This has been fun and very rewarding!

    ASSIGNMENT 1

Big Picture Loops in RIVERDALE Pilot

    1. Jason Blossom’s murder underlies everything going on in the town.

    2. Veronica’s father is in jail awaiting trial for major embezzlement.

    3. Betty wants to know what is happening with her sister Polly.

    4. Archie wants to pursue a music career.

    5. Archie’s dad Fred has a construction business that’s not doing well.

    6. Betty’s mother is mentally and emotionally unstable.

How Loops Are Used in Episode 9

    1. Cheryl has to take Jason’s place at the tapping ceremony and nobody is happy about it.

    a. New Loop: Will Cheryl be able to take Jason’s place in everyone’s eyes?

    2. Veronica discovers that her friend Ethyl’s family was financially ruined by her dad’s crimes.

    a. New Loop: How will Veronica deal with her father and the damage he’s caused?

    3. Betty discovers that Polly is spying on the Blossoms to prove they murdered Jason.

    a. New Loop: Will Polly be able to prove this before the Blossoms hurt her and the baby?

    4. Archie has the opportunity to connect with an exclusive music school if he just does what the Blossoms tell him to do. Loop closed in this episode.

    a. Loop Continues: Will Archie make it as a musician without the help of others?

    5. Fred discovers that Hermione has sealed the construction deal because she and her husband own the property, which is being fought over by them and the Blossoms.

    a. New Loop: Will Fred and his company survive being in the middle of this fight?

    6. Betty’s parents split and Betty’s mother needs her now more than ever.

    a. New Loop: Will Betty be able to keep her family together and be happy again?

    ASSIGNMENT 2:

Big Picture Loops That Could Be in the 13 WEEKS Pilot

    1. A man’s foot is found on the trail. Loop: Unidentified murder victim or hiker killed by a bear – what kind of danger lurks in the woods?

    2. Jodie goes out into the woods every evening. Loop: Where is she going and why?

    3. Lucas arrives with his uncle who is always with him. Loop: Who is the Uncle and why is he there?

    4. Miguel is terrified of being alone, especially alone in woods. Loop: Why is he there?

    5. Susie observes everyone carefully and continually writes in her diary. Loop: Why is she so obsessed with her diary and recording everything?

    6. Hiker’s and new staff report seeing Sasquatch near one of the glaciers. Loop: Who or what is this?

    7. Due to potential danger, all staff are required to have a woods buddy. Loop: Will the buddy system keep everyone safe?

    8. Lucas becomes sick and has to be quarantined, but it’s a trick to get away from “Uncle.” Loop: Why is he so desperate to get away from this guy and where will he go?

MODULE 1 – LESSON 9: INVITING OBSESSION THROUGH OPEN LOOPS

    ASSIGNMENT 1

    1. Think about your Example Show. Make a list of the Big Picture open loops that were established early in the season.

    2. Watch the next episode and see how those open loops are being used to create the need to see future episodes.

    GOALS:

    New goals?

Jane, Celeste, Bonnie and Renata want to get past the murder lie

Jane and Celeste want Perry’s kids to be friends

    Amabella’s abuser to be discovered

    What is Jane’s money source

Goals related to the big picture?

Unspoken goal is for cops to solve murder

Marie Louise wants to find out what happened to Perry, what makes Celeste tick

    Crushed goals?

Madeline wants to keep her affair hidden

    Renata wants to stay rich

    Competition / conflict around goals?

Ed wants his marriage to be more honest, Maddie doesn’t

Nathan wants Maddie and Bonnie to get along, Ed doesn’t

Mary Louise hates Maddie and Maddie just wants her out of the picture

    CONSEQUENCES:

Are they going to be caught?

Will Bonnie get caught as Perry’s killer

    Problems created from past actions?

Madeline’s affair has wrecked her marriage to Ed

    Good plans gone wrong?

The murder coverup driven by Maddie makes more trouble than telling the truth

Covering up Perry’s abusive behavior makes more trouble for Celeste than if she had gone public to begin with

Amabella’s accusation of Ziggy triggered the conflicts that led to Perry being revealed as the rapist in a way

Perry’s rape of Jane led to his own death

Perry’s abuse of Celeste led to his own death.

    SOLVING PROBLEMS:

Perry’s problem is his rage, triggered by who knows what, but maybe by his mother

Bonnie’s problem came from her impulsive act to save Celeste by killing Perry

Madeline’s problem is her affair with the director and her competition with Renata

Renata’s problem is that she is alpha, and also that this drove her husband Gordon to try to one up her and get busted for it by the SEC

What are they trying to solve?

Season 1, Celeste, Jane, Madeline are trying to find out who Ziggy’s dad is.

    Major change imposed on character?

Renata goes broke, Bonnie kills Perry, Madeline’s affair is exposed to Ed, Nathan can’t deal with Bonnie’s not being there.

    Previous solutions cause new problems?

Bonnie checking out is killing her marriage to Nathan

Madeline’s need for intimacy causes the affair that threatens her marriage

Jane’s looking for Mr. Goodbar leads to getting raped, and having Ziggy

Perry rage leads to his death and his being a rapist

    RELATIONSHIPS:

    Relationships in peril?

By season 2 pretty much every relationship is in peril

    New relationships forming?

Jane, madeline bonnie Celeste and Renata form a bond, become the Monterey Five

Mary Louise forms an enemy relationship with Madeline and Celeste

    Conflict inside relationships?

    Relationships changing?

    DANGER / SURVIVAL / RISKS:

    Can they survive X?

Putting themselves in danger / making dangerous decisions?

Will Madeline and Bonnie marriages survive?

Will Bonnie end up in Jail?

Will Gordon end up in jail?

Will Renata be broke and maybe in jail also?

Will Jane’s bad choices continue and get her into more trouble?

Will Mary Louise’s fight with Madeline and drive to expose the Monterey 5 put her in peril?

Who else is pulled into their danger?

Abegail, Ed, Nathan, Ziggy, Max, amabella and the rest of the kids are all at risk as it looks like their parents may all wind up in jail or divorced.

Internal dangers (drug addiction, need for medicine, inner demons)?

Celeste has an abuse demon, madeline has a romance demon, Jane has a victim of rape demon, Ziggy and Max seem to have demons that make them impulsive and aggressive

Mary Louise has some crazy demon, maybe the source of Perry’s violence.

Nathan’s goading of Ed, and Ed’s snarkiness suggest some sort of inner demons driving them both.

Gordon has some sort of greed demon that has led him to jail.

    Ben’s Big Picture Open Loops

What I learned doing this assignment is … big picture open loops ask questions abut the future of something important and keep the audience coming back for answers.

Top 5-8 Big Picture Open Loops that could be in your pilot:

    1. Will Jack discover a conspiracy to hide alien technology from the public?

    2. Will Jack discover who is behind the conspiracy?

    3. Will Jack discover who abducted these scientists?

    4. Will Jack’s reputation be ruined / survive?

    5. Will the love affair between Jack and Margaret (his boss) survive Jack’s investigation into this story?

    6. Will government agent Harold get to Jack and erase Gina before the story is out?

    7. Will any of Gina’s colleagues corroborate her story?

Module 1 – Lesson 9: Renee Brown’s Inviting Obsession Through Open Loops

What I learned doing this assignment is the balance between mystery of the past and obsession with the future is the sweet spot for creating a concept that grabs the view and won’t let go.

    ASSIGNMENT 1 The 100

1 Big Picture open loops that were established early in the season.

Is the earth safe to come back to? Are the grounders going to be friend or foe? Are the people on the ark going to come down to earth? Are Clark and her mom going to reconcile? Are Lincoln and Octavia going to be together?

    2. How those open loops are being used to create the need to see future episodes: like breadcrumbs. The scenes rotate from character to character, earth to the ark, taking the view just far enough to invest in the crisis of the moment then….switch.

    <hr size=”0″ width=”100%” noshade=”” align=”center”>ASSIGNMENT 2:

New working title for the Series: Renee Brown’s Alien Earth. (Previously Alien Mafia)

    1. Use this list to brainstorm big picture open loops for your first season that you will use to keep the audience captivated.

    GOALS:

Will Rollin succeed in training his sister Maryum to be the ONE?<div>

Will Steelman reunite with his lover and child on the DSOM?

Anauk will not succeed his father Crushed goal and wing.

Will Anauk be caught in his black-market access program to the DSOM?</div><div>

Can Tallas let go of his resentments in order to see potential alliances with Deepers?

Will Shepard recover from his accidental killing of his wife?

    SOLVING PROBLEMS:

Anauk’s father, Dauntus, wants to take over the world.</div><div>

What is that planet, where did it come here, what does it want?

Saltar and Tallas are sworn enemies, but they are on the same page against Dauntus

Humanity has been kept in the dark about alien population, but now are unprepared for renegade planet

    RELATIONSHIPS:

The final straw for Anauk and his father – the broken wing</div><div>

    Steelman and the professor.

    Anauk and his evil brother?

The reunion of Saltar and Tallas reignites an old flame

    DANGER / SURVIVAL / RISKS:

    Can they survive Dauntus’ coup?</div>

Saltar risks the visit to Tallas

Humanity, Deepers and Longheads are all at risk

Internal dangers: Tallas’ revenge, Saltar’s vanity, Anauk’s need for approval, Steelman’s grief, Rollin’s lack of self-worth.

Lesson 9: Inviting Obsession: Open Loops

John Anderson’s Big Picture Open Loops

What I learned doing this assignment is… That I may need to figure out more back story and intrigue but…. I think open loops work even when we know that the final end is foreseen. In other words, we know the Americans win WWII and General Patton lives, but we still take the ride in “Patton” and pretend we don’t know this. When we go back in time to solve a mystery, we need open loops within this time frame to make it interesting and we reveal the mystery clues.

    ASSIGNMENT 1

    1. Think about your Example Show. Make a list of the Big Picture open loops that were established early in the season.

    – Will they get caught?

    – Are these kids going to live a normal life or have to go to Russia and how will they deal with the lies?

    – How long is this supposed to go on for?

    – Will they get together in “love”

    -Will Beeman’s secrets be exposed?

    – Will Beeman get in a kill or be killed situation with them like his partner did?

    – Will they defect?

    2. Watch the next episode and see how those open loops are being used to create the need to see future episodes.

    – are the wives going to cheat?

    – are either of them getting a divorce?

    – did the mistakes turn this into an all out war?

    – does Elizabeth care more about USSR than her kids (are they simply cover)?

-where will this Stan/Russian secretary affair lead both of them?

    – any way secretary can live through this?

    – friction between new Russian female handler (Grannie) and Elizabeth is rising (treats are made and statements like – “you are new at this and have so much to learn”

    – She Elizabeth and Philip go back and forth between trust and mistrust – hurting the other

    ASSIGNMENT 2:

    1. Use this list to brainstorm big picture open loops for your first season that you will use to keep the audience captivated.

    GOALS:

New goals? – to become a pilot, to survive the defection, to get info on the MiG25, to become a honey pot, to enjoy being with each other (CIA female and Viktor)

Competition / conflict around goals? – Female CIA agent doing her job vs fulfilling personal needs, Wants to be loyal to country but not reciprocated, Wife wants high life and power but he wants his job, new mom and Viktor want to control dad, Viktor wants to fly newer planes

    CONSEQUENCES:

Are they going to be caught? – obvious with defection plans, is viktors wife cheating, bible found with other pilot

Problems created from past actions? – Viktor was asking lots of the wrong questions at one time, Viktor running away is tolerated only once, Viktor was a traitor to his country.

Good plans gone wrong? – will he find a place to land the MiG?

    SOLVING PROBLEMS:

What is the major problem for this character? He can’t live with the fake world and pretend all is well.

What are they trying to solve? What’s true life about and is there freedom somewhere?

Major change imposed on character? Wife and child leaving for good, won’t be promoted to test pilot, forced to live in filthy barracks in Siberia, under control of US Government, can’t go home.

Previous solutions cause new problems? Leaving is one thing, now in America… now what? Got married but now has to worry about her feelings, Same with child being born. Kissing ass just makes him feel like he’s part of the lie himself.

    2. Tell us your top 5-8 Big Picture Open Loops that could be in your pilot.

The CIA female relationship w V.

The CIA Male relationship w V.

The CIA agents’ relationships with each other

    The farmer and Viktor

    Why did he run?

Will he make it (even though we know he will, does that work?) perhaps as … HOW will he make it?

    4. Will Carlton’s secret be exposed and will he suffer consequences for his actions?

    5. How will Harmony reach Grace to resolve past life and protect her from the current danger?

Charlotte follows him back to the bar and makes it clear that she still cares for him. How will this conflict with her family escalate?

    · Tyler has brought Ashley, Victoria’s assistant, into his secret ploy, but we still don’t know his end game other than an apparent con man.

    · Frank Stevens is murdered by Emily Thorne and Victory seems genuinely hurt by this.

    Lesson 9 – Assignment #2

Marc Armstrong’s Big Picture Open Loops

What I learned doing this assignment was that while open loops obviously lend to obsession, it takes some creativity to develop them. I am finding an overlap between mystery and open loops. In fact, the more issues I note the more challenging it is to figure out how to piece it all together. I am hoping that future lessons will help sort this out.

    Sean’s Big Picture Open Loops

What I learned doing this assignment:

    1. There is a clear connection with the mysteries and the loops.

    2. There is a clear difference between the Big Picture Open Loops and the Small Picture Open Loops, as well as their importance and their crafting.

    3. It is these loops that keep the mysteries alive and obsessive to answer from episode to episode and season to season to end.

    Assignment 1

The Big Picture Open Loops I have noticed in Supernatural so far are will they ever know who or what killed their mother and Sam’s girlfriend? And will they destroy it/get revenge or closure? Will Sam ever be at peace with being just a hunter or will he go back to pursuing a normal life? Will he get a normal life and be completely happy? Will Dean break out of his shell and pursue a girlfriend, a family and/or a normal life? Will their father destroy the evil that killed his wife, or will he get destroyed? Will either of the two brothers get killed by any one of the evils they hunt, including the one that killed their mother?

    Assignment 2

My top five Big Picture Open loops will be:

Will Cian Shea get caught by the law or killed by the Devil or his brother?

Will Cian Shea persevere or lose his mind under the pressure?

Will Cian Shea reveal his agenda and who he really is in detail to Bridget after they become a couple/intimate? Will he do the same for Anastacia? Will he ask them for help/commitment?

Will the Devil figure out who Cian Shea is entirely sooner rather than later and to what length will he go to destroy/stop Cian? Will he let other demons or people in on his nightmare and the possibility of Cian being that prophecy?

Will Cian move and convince God to fully help/allow him to bring down the entire world of evil and the Devil through supernatural means? Will he get the Sillick? Will God allow this?

Will the desire to give up on accomplishing his dream because of the risks win once he is a celebrity and living the good life?

Donna Stockwell’s Big Picture Open Loops
What I learned doing this assignment is I created more open loops and found this story could be pushed more to the limits, and just like the other assignments, this will have to be revisited to further enhance my story, since I was brainstorming ideas and I may combine some of them and not follow some other ideas.

Cooper James – Big Picture open loops

What I learned doing this assignment is how the Big Picture open loops hook your audience and make future episodes more exciting to write. Big Picture allows the writer to create stories that build to that climactic final episode of the season. It keeps eyes coming back to a series to get answers about characters they are concerned about.

    Jason’s Big Picture Open Loops

What I learned doing this assignment is planning a limited series (7-8 episodes) is more constrained than planning a continuing series (multi-seasoned); while the potential for many loops still exists, the specifics of character/story arcs limit the big picture loops to a limited scale. Also, the more characters involved, the greater potential for open loops.

    ASSIGNMENT 1

    L O S T

    Initial Big Picture Open Loops

    1. Which Loops are established early on?

    What caused the crash?

    Will the survivors be rescued?

    Is the island safe?

Who and What else are on the island?

    Are there other survivors?

Are all of the main characters hiding something?

Are Kate and Jack going to be a thing—or Kate and Sawyer?

    2. How are loops being used?

The pilot reveals plane off course by thousands of miles. How will anyone find them?
The pilot is then killed by giant unseen beast. A polar bear is killed. How are these creatures here? What other nastiness does the island hide?

Radios do not work, until they pick up a 16 year old transmission coming from the island itself that warns everyone is dead. Where is this coming from? Who made it? What killed them?

Kate is revealed to be a criminal, and very manipulative, so both men become wary of her. What does she want? Can she be sincere? Does she actually care about anyone but herself?

The Frenchwoman reveals there are Others on the island who are dangerous and that she had to kill her crewmembers due to them getting “sick.” Is she insane? Did she kill them for a good reason or not?

Locke reveals everyone on the island will be tested and find answers to what they’re looking for. How does he know? How did he get healed from his paralysis? What is he hiding?

Each principal character has a secret they’re carrying that they don’t want to share. How many of them are dangerous? What are their motivations? How will they continue to interact?

    ASSIGNMENT 2

    Dreaming Wide Awake

    Initial Big Picture Open Loops

What is the transformative content of Gina’s writing that alters people’s lives upon reading/hearing it?

Will Maggie’s plan to bring fame/recognition to Gina work, or will it backfire?

Why is Gina self-isolating when she is skilled at interacting with others?

What is she hiding that she isn’t writing about?

Will Gina’s relationships with Parker or Chris become romantic?

Why are Parker and Chris really here? What are they hiding?

What effect will Chris’ viral reading and praise of Gina’s work have on her exposure?

What will happen psychologically/emotionally if Gina loses control of her safe life?

NORENE SMILEY LESSON 9 ASSIGNMENT – INVITING OBSESSION: OPEN LOOPS

What I learned doing this assignment: I was finding it difficult to differentiate between mysteries and open loops after awhile. They are very similar I think. However, being aware to leave doors open throughout the story and not resolve anything too soon, is good to have in the tool belt. It has made me think about when to real some of the major questions. For example, I had been thinking that Scrap would find out she was cursed at the midpoint of the story to create a change in character and propel things towards the finish. Now I am thinking it should be towards the end to keep that loop open.
