Lois’s Big Picture Open Loops
What I learned doing this assignment is…I need to figure out ways that solutions lead to problems.”
1. Think about your Example Show. Make a list of the Big Picture open loops that were established early in the season.
Will Kate hook up with Jack, Sayid and / or Sawyer?
Will the Korean couple break up? Will the husband find out that his wife speaks English? Will that matter?
What are Shannon and her brother up to?
Will the pregnant lady have a healthy baby?
Will Charlie truly overcome his addiction?
Will Locke’s miraculous recovery last?
2. Watch the next episode and see how those open loops are being used to create the need to see future episodes.
We see Kate look fondly at Jack. We see her kiss Sawyer (trying to get medicine for Shannon). We see her look fondly at Sayid.
We see the Korean husband possibly catch his wife speaking English.
We see Shannon have an asthma attack, and the Korean wife heals her.

What I learned doing this assignment is: When I think of this concept it reminds me of the “set up & pay off” in see in comedy. I think it’s really great to plant a seed with an audience to keep them looking forward to the eventual payoff whether it’s what they expected or not. Again, it just makes the whole story that much richer, which I totally love!

Luc’s Big Picture Open Loops
What I learned doing this assignment is that I agree with Jon (previous post) when he says this « open loops » concept reminds him of “set up & pay off”. But I see it like another way of looking at the same tool. Usually you plant things in a discreet way. Opening a loop is more obvious, and is more like starting a count down without giving the time frame.
Also, closing a loop can open a new one. Like in Prison Break, the first shot of the pilote opens the « Tattoo loop » (why is Michael having his whole body tattooed at once). The last shot of the pilote closes the loop by revealing that the tattoo is a blueprint of the prison. This opens a new loop: since Michael is a walking map, will someone else figure it out? And how will it help the prison break?ASSIGNMENT 1
Prison Break
1. Think about your Example Show. Make a list of the Big Picture open loops that were established early in the season.
Episode 8
Obvious open loop is between Michael and the Prison Doctor: when will they kiss ? and when will she team up with him against: the law, the prison, her father (who is governor of the state), etc…?
Other open loop « Is Michael going to be caught? ». This is used in every episode, of course.
There is also a new step made in every episode for the prison break, and it always goes wrong, or seems to go wrong.
Also, Michael is building an escape team, but this team is made of unreliable or/and dangerous convicts. One of them is a psychopath. How will he manage to keep all these people working together without horrible things happening? There are open loops foreshadowing troubles.
Another open loop has to do with Veronika’s investigation. Secret agents want to stop her, and killing her seems to be just a problem of time.
There is a smaller open loop suggested by the feelings one of the key convicts has for his cat. It is bound to have some kind of link with the plot and also the implication of this convict is left for later.2. Watch the next episode and see how those open loops are being used to create the need to see future episodes.
Episode 9
The « cat » loop has just been closed in this episode, and it does have a huge implication in the plot. The cat is killed by the chief officer which makes the convict help Michael on a key element for the escape, out of retaliation. This is one of the smaller loops that are continuously fuelling the bigger loop about the way Michael is planning the break out.
This episode is packed with open loops:
They plan on digging a hole in a storage place (goal), but find out it is now used as quarters for the prison officers (crushed goal). They plan on starting a fire in this place so that they can be chosen to be the ones to clean it after the fire (new goal). But the only person who has access to the place and could set up the fire doesn’t want to help them. He is the convict with the cat, and his cat is missing (this loop was opened in the previous episode: during a prison riot where the cat escaped into the service corridors network). Michael finds the cat and brings it back in exchange of the convicts help to set up the fire. The convict refuses (another crushed goal: but the loop is still opened) It is only when the chief of officers kills the cat (to put pressure on him (another loop opened in the previous episode where this particular convict witnesses the murder of an officer), but now doesn’t want to rat on who did it) that he decides to help Michael out of retaliation for the killing of his cat, setting up the fire as if the chief officer started the fire out of negligence. All those loops are intertwined. It’s almost as if every sequence is opening a new loop, or is redirecting an old one. They are too many to track down, but here are a few:
Major change about a character: the « cat convict » loop. Will he change from being a model convict for thirty years to be included in the break away team?
Relationships in peril: the psychopath convict has a young slave convict. He forced him to rat on an innocent convict for the murder of an officer he committed. A shot ends on the slave, almost crying, which suggest he will soon rebel.
Solving problems: in the previous episode a loop is opened with the prison doctor discovering Michael lied to her. She is now investigating about it. This loop converges with a bigger loop opened long before on their mutual affection.
In this episode a major revelation is done at the end: the special agents are taking orders from the vice president’s wife, meaning that Michael’s brother’s set up in death row comes from the highest place of power. This reveal acts like a new « open risk loop ». But also, in the same loop, we see the agents lying to the vice president’s wife, telling her that everything is in control, as in fact it isn’t. Michael’s brother’s son has not been caught by the police (and another loop is started when we see he has a photo of the agent in his phone that implicates him in the killing of his mother (for which he is himself accused of).ASSIGNMENT 2
1. Use this list to brainstorm big picture open loops for your first season that you will use to keep the audience captivated.
GOALS:
• New goals?
⁃ From Survival to wanting to Die (or opposite)
⁃ Tell someone you love him before you die.
⁃ From self centered to repair an injustice (made by you or someone else)
⁃ Revenge about something you learned while in Limbo (before dying, also before waking up because you know you will forget)
⁃ From preparing life for your loved ones in your after death, to enjoy what is left of your own life before dying.CONSEQUENCES:
• Are they going to be caught?
⁃ Is Jaqueline’s real age going to be discovered, ending her love relationship with Rocker?
• Problems created from past actions?
⁃ Jaqueline tried to kill herself, her husband tries to respect this choice, urging the staff to let her die.2. Tell us your top 5-8 Big Picture Open Loops that could be in your pilot.
Jaqueline would rather die than be taken out of coma. But when she meets Rocker, she’d rather stay as long as possible in Limbo, than die.Jaqueline’s husband is determined to kill her himself if the staff goes into therapeutic obstinacy.
Although the Girl Next Room feels great, her vital signs are going down. Will it reach the point where the staff decide it is time to stop therapeutic obstinacy.
How will people in Limbo manage to communicate with the living world?
Will the staff finally trust the Lousy Student as a messenger from the Limbo?
What will become of Rocker when the administration finds out he’s been kept secretly in the cellar for ten years in total contradiction with ethical procedures.
New young administrative follows the life of the service like some ordinary trainee. His goal is to figure how to reduce costs. The chief of service doesn’t want him there (saying it makes everybody nervous and disrupts the efficiency of the work done). There is an argument between them, in front of everyone, where the CoS accuses the administrative of not trusting them, ending with the administrative poisoning himself, as a proof of how much he does trust them. It is an extreme way of forcing his way into the service, which shows what kind of crazy person he is. It also make us wonder, will he also go in Limbo?
Those are big picture loops, but I don’t know if they should be in the pilot, since I don’t know how far into the plot my pilot should go.

Kathleen’s Big Picture Open Loops
What I learned doing this assignment is that each story needs to have compelling loops that pull the audience into and keeps their attention.

Cardinal Michael was his Mentor and he is mad at him because he was suppose to be Pope. Pope Pius XIII goes to him and asks him to continue to mentor him but he says no.
8. Pope Pius XIII – is making dangerous decisions and not listening to his advisers. He is working alone. He writes his own speeches and doesn’t allow anyone else to advise him. People are scared of what he is doing and how he is leading the people of the Catholic Church.

Frank’s Big Picture Open Loops, assignment 1:
What I learned doing this assignment is…
What I learned is for my Example Show is that
the big picture loop of how will Jessica Jones capture Killgrave without
killing him creates an ongoing dilemma for her that keeps the story moving
through 7 episodes (and will continue to do so for all 13 episodes presumably).
In Ep7, Jessica Jones concocts a plan to turn herself in to the NYPD as a
murdered. She brings the head of her slain neighbor Ruben in a plastic bag and
dumps it onto the homicide detective’s desk. Locked up in the interrogation
room, she dismisses Jerri Hogarth as her attorney, saying she’ll defend herself
after confessing to the murder. It seems inevitable that she will go to jail.
But then Killgrave shows up at the precinct house and mind-controls everyone
into pointing guns at each other, before professing his love for Jessica Jones.
She could kill him in that moment using her super-strength, and thereby save everyone
in that room from shooting each other. But if she were to do that, Hope would never
have a chance to prove her innocence. So instead Jessica Jones must acquiesce
to Killgrave’s will and agree to meet him later at her childhood home to
continue the sick psychological mind-game that he’s playing with her. This
saves the lives of everyone in the room but further dwindles Jessica’s chances
of ever capturing Killgrave and getting him to confess to being the true
mastermind behind the murder of Hope’s parents. This, of course, compels us to
continue watching the series to find out how Jessica will ever be able to
contain Killgrave and free Hope.Assignment 1:
Think about your Example Show. Make a list of the Big Picture open loops that were established early in the season.
Watch the next episode and see how those open loops are being used to create the need to see future episodes.
Big Picture Open Loops in JESSICA JONES, up to s01e07 – “AKA Top Shelf Perverts”:
- How will Jessica Jones prove Hope’s innocence? Jessica’s new plan involves getting herself arrested for a violent murder (which she didn’t commit) and getting locked up in Supermax prison where she’ll lay a trap for Killgrave. Meanwhile, her friend Trish has concocted her own plan to track Killgrave’s bodyguards as a way to figure out where Killgrave is. William decides to help her.
- Will Jessica Jones ever confess to Luke Cage that she was the one who killed his wife? Especially after they’ve started sleeping together and falling in love? After Luke finds out the truth in e06, he tells Jessica Jones that she “is a piece of shit”. This sends her on a bender that culminates with her nearly killing Wendy in an effort to get her to sign the divorce papers on behalf of Jerri Hogarth. This only makes the situation worse with Wendy blackmailing Jerri into surrendering 75% of her assets in the divorce.
- What is Killgrave’s master plan? In this episode, we see Killgrave has broken into Jessica’s apartment and is going through her stuff. He’s interrupted when Ruben, her neighbor, knocks on the door. Killgrave opens the door and asks Ruben why he’s trying to give her homemade banana bread. Ruben says it’s because he loves her. Killgrave then makes Ruben slit his own throat in Jessica’s bed. Later, he uses Jessica’s guilt to further coerce her into joining him at her childhood home.
- How can Jessica Jones capture a powerful telepath alive without endangering her own mind… especially when she’s already traumatized from having been mind-controlled by him for a year? After discovering Ruben’s body in her bed, Jessica hatches a plan to get herself arrested for his murder and sent to Supermax prison. She believes Killgrave can’t resist coming after her in the prison and she intends for him to be trapped there when he does. Unfortunately, this plan is spoiled by Killgrave’s appearance at the police station and him holding all the police officers and bystanders hostage using his mind-control abilities.
- Will the survivors of Killgrave’s mind control ever be able to heal from their trauma? Also, what are the interesting and unique steps they take to deal with the trauma? Someone like Malcolm has become Jessica Jones’ ally. His newfound mental clarity gives him the motivation to risk his own life to help her bring Killgrave down.

Frank’s Big Picture Open Loops, assignment 2:
What I learned doing this assignment is…
From doing this assignment for my own show, I learned that the questions for each of the list items (Goal, Consequences, Solving Problems, Relationships, & Danger/Survival/Risk) are extremely helpful in getting my brain to start thinking about future-oriented issues that would cause a viewer to want to keep watching to find out what happens next in the story. While I’m not happy that Marjorie is not the one to innovate the new renewable energy tech on her own, playing with the idea that she is receiving this knowledge through her parents via lucid dreaming does open up other interesting ways of telling this story. While Marjorie may not end up becoming a cheerleader for women in STEM like I want her to be, maybe she’ll show resourcefulness in other ways. For example, she might become good at math and science even if she doesn’t actually invent a new technology like the Salter’s Duck. Perhaps this initial experience of bringing a new technology that helps people to her community will inspire her to do something else that is equally or more amazing in terms of a STEM-based accomplishment. Regardless, the experience of thinking about and creating Big Picture Open Loops is really helpful in building the foundations for a really intriguing and emotionally satisfying story.
2.) Tell us your top 5 – 8 Big Picture Open Loops that could be in your pilot.
My top picks are:
- Marjorie and her best friend have a big fight and then the friend goes missing. The local Watch is unable to find her. A massive search ensues but there is no luck. Marjorie, driven by guilt over starting a petty squabble with her friend the day before she went missing, vows to find her.
- Marjorie is having more and more lucid dreams about a family that is not her own.
- Marjorie discovers that she was adopted. She can’t remember what her life was like before the age of 8.
- Marjorie and her friend Nelson Davis grow close during their adventure in finding the missing girl. But they each have strong personalities that sometimes clash. Will they end up together or won’t they?
- Marjorie’s Gulf Coast community doesn’t have access to a reliable power grid. Sometimes their refrigerators go out and people get sick from eating spoiled food. Marjorie believes she can help them by scavenging electrical materials from the abandoned lighthouse and building generators.
- Marjorie wins 1st place in her school’s science fair for her Salter’s Duck wave generators. But this brings some unwelcome attention from the government/military who want to know how she came up with the idea.
- What is the meaning of the phantasmagoric visions that plague Marjorie when she’s awake? Like seeing a starfield underwater?
