Margaret’s Action Track!
What I learned doing this assignment: The list of categories of action helps to brainstorm possible action sequences.
Concept: A Roman soldier betrays his mission, squad, and family risking his life to save a band of captured Irish Christians.
Answer the Action Questions:
A. Considering the concept from
Lesson 1, what action could naturally show up in this movie? Chase scenes,
scenes using Roman fighting arts.
B. Considering the Mission and
Villain Tracks, what action could work for this track?Chase/pursuit, rescue, escape/evade, dangerous situations.
C. How can the action start
well, build in the 2nd Act, and escalate to a climax in the 3rd Act?Start with pursuit end in capture with death sentence.
. Select the types of action you’ll use.
Competition:
Complaints from the squad that Coroticus (the commander) allowed Marcus (a
new recruit) to join an experienced, elite squad sets up a competition
among the 8 man squad where Marcus reveals his fighting skills.Purpose: Insight into Marcus’ skills, showing him as a
champion of all Roman fighting arts: Plumblata, staff sling, crossbow,
etc.<div><b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Chase/Pursuit:
(Foot chase). Marcus must find and save the captured Christians before
they reach the Picts (a barbarian group that will buy the Christians as
slaves).Purpose: Insight into Marcus’ convictions. Shows he is
willing to betray the commander (his uncle who has been a father to him),
his squad and the church’s mission to kill/capture the Christians to do
what he feels is right in God’s eyes.<div>
Fight:
Takes out Picts with the plumbata and staff sling. Hand-to-hand combat with the two Roman soldiers from his squad guarding the Christians. When the Roman soldier refuses to give in, he kills him.Purpose: Shows Marcus is willing to kill members of
his own squad to save Christians.Rescue:
Marcus frees the Christians and escapes with the band amidst sleeping Picts and over a cliff to escape. Creatively
uses staff and axe to get the band down the cliff face.Purpose: Shows Marcus’ creativity in helping the unskilled
group escape.Chase/Pursuit:
A band of twenty Picts pursues the Marcus and the Christians. Marcus must
train the band in the use of weaponry and fighting tactics to avoid
capture.Purpose: Shows Marcus’ ability to lead and organize a
small band to fight a dangerous enemy.Fight/Evade: Marcus and the Christians fight the Picts and the surviving Picts retreat.
a. Purpose: Shows Marcus’ unique skill set – able to kill at least 10 Picts when he is surrounded by them. Shows his relationship with Mary Elizabeth, risking his life to save her.
Dangerous Situations:
Marcus and the Christians escape only to be confronted by the Roman squad
(6 left).Purpose: Show Marcus’ internal conflict between
loyalty to his uncle (Corticus) and the squad and his loyalty to God.</div><div><b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>Fight/Capture: Marcus and the band of Christians fight but are no match for the elite Roman squad and are captured.
a. Purpose: Set Marcus up for his ultimate confrontation with his uncle.
Interrogation: Marcus
is confronted by Coroticus and is given the choice of rejoining the squad
or death by stoning.Purpose: Puts the hero to the ultimate test – will he
give his life for his convictions?</div>Stoning:
Marcus and the band of Christians are stoned by the squad. Marcus has the
band cower together and he covers them with his body during the stoning.Purpose: Show Marcus’ loyalty to the Christians and
Coroticus’ loyalty to church and state.</div>

Assignment 5: Action track
I learned that the action consists of very simple building blocks in order to elevate the story and the overall impactfulness of the movie.
Answer these questions to create your Action Track:
A. Considering the concept from Lesson 1, what action could naturally show up in this movie?
Gun, knives, swords, eskrima sticks,
B. Considering the Mission and Villain Tracks, what action could work for this track?
chasing/pursuit, fighting, shootout, rescue, competition (Sen is very competitive), dangerous situations, torture/interrogation
C. How can the action start well, build in the 2nd Act, and escalate to a climax in the 3rd Act?
Sen starts small when he underestimates how good Jun is at fighting and keeps upping the stakes with more men and better fighters. The building is rigged with things that could kill him like micro exploding drones, lasers rooms without escape. This all escalates to a final fight between Sen and Jun.
2. Select the types of action you’ll use.
Fight: Jun is stick fighting a cute young woman in a dojo. They are wearing full battle armor. It is later revealed after he loses that she is his girlfriend.
(Purpose: establishes he is a likeable guy who is pretty skilled at fighting although he needs work.)Fight: Jun is caught trying to steal the drive. He faces off with a guard who he quickly disarms his gun and fights off with his eskrima practice sticks. He accidentally kills him by cracking his skull.
(Purpose: Shows how lethal his fighting skills can be and that he is pretty capable of fighting.)Chase/Pursuit: Jun is outnumbered and is running for his life but there is no escape from the fortress he broke into.
(He must use his street smarts, hacking skills and stick fighting to get him out.)
Escape/Evade: He hides in a game room.
(This whole thing is a game to Sen and Jun must play this game through.)
Shootout: Jun is able to disarm a guard and use his weapon in a shootout. He can’t mount a good fight but it allows him to keep his distance on them.
(Although he was limited to the practice sticks be brought with him, it can be used to gain access to other weapons)
Rescue: His friend who hired him for the mission tries to break him out. They devise a plan to get him out of one of the waste disposal areas. Instead his friend is killed and Jun is captured.
(takes away all hope Jun can escape this.)
Interrogation/tortures: Sen tortures Jun to get him to break the drive’s encryption.
(as much as Sen wants to kill Jun, he can’t because he still has the key to unlock the drive. This is how we learn about Jun’s sick sister and this mission is his only hope to save her. Shows more of Sen’s sadistic nature.)
Rescue: Jun’s girlfriend with some help of his eskrima school break in to save Jun.
(As bad ass as Jun is, he has a whole community that got his back.)
Competition/Sen: Sen is competitive so he stands to fight instead of run. This is the final showdown of Sen and Jun.
(Sen loses at his own game design.)

ASSIGNMENT 5: ACTION CLASS
Subject line: Alfred Dunham’s Action Track!
What I learned from this assignment is:
I’ve never much considered action in terms of TYPES of action, any more than how ACTION, as a Genre, differs from other Genre, like COMEDY or FANTASY.
There is a difference. For openers, The Main Character/Protagonist becomes a true “Hero” character, even as the Antagonist character becomes a true “Villain.” They are the core of the movie to the near exclusion of other characters, so it appears to be necessary to maintain that distinction by avoiding any side plots.
1. QUESTIONS:
A. Considering the concept from Lesson 1, what action could naturally show up in this movie?B. Considering the Mission and Villain Tracks, what action could work for this track? C. How can the action start well, build in the 2nd Act, and escalate to a climax in the 3rd Act?
2. TYPES OF ACTION:
· A. Chase/Pursuit
· B. Fight
· C. Shootout
· D. Rescue
· E. Escape/Evade
· F. Competition
· G. Dangerous Situations
· H. Interrogation
· I. Torture
3. SEQUENCE OF ACTION SCENES
1. INVITATION:
With discrete flashbacks, we understand the history of the Hero and the Villain before the latter’s rise to power. The Villain knows full well, the hook he’s on and tries to play the [FAUX] Friend Game, by admitting to errors in judgment and pleading to let bygones be bygones – in exchange, of course, for a piece of the action.
2. NO CONTEST:
He must try to make [FAUX] friends, by making [FAUX] apologies and find a reconciliation, but the Hero is too smart for that and is, instead, seriously appalled buy Villain’s bald-facedness.
3. COERSION:
If the Hero refuses to fall for the Villain’s fakery, the Villain must then use intimidation, and he does.
4. THREATS:
If intimidation fails, the Villain must then move on to threat [which will be difficult because the way the past has ruined the Hero’s life]. As expected, threat fall on deaf ears, and the Villain is forced to make good on his threats.
ACT ONE TWIST
5. ESCAPE INTO HIDING:
When the Villain’s men come, the Hero narrowly escapes into his world of wilderness and secrets – and a laboratory that no one knows about.
6. HIDING OUT/SEARCHING OUT A PLAN:
In his giddy self-confidence, the Villain has driven the Hero into hiding, but with his resources he feels it’s just a matter of time before he can be eliminated.
7. TOUCHING COUP:
In a last-ditch effort to dissuade the Villain, the Hero makes a perilous entry into the Villain’s office, Ninja-style, straw/pipe-darting security as he goes with an instant acting tranquilizer, before delivering one last ultimatum to back off and leave him and his family alone. And then he darts the Villain as well.
8. ESCAPE BACK INTO HIDING
The Hero escapes the Villain’s headquarters, but the sheer boldness of his coup is a mockery to the Villain.
MIDPOINT TWIST
9. THE DECISION TO KILL THE HERO:
For the Villain, the flipped threats do just the opposite. He becomes entrenched in his madness. It becomes a fight to the death.
10. BREAKTHROUH:
Glass is sand, yet we can see right through it. The Hero has been working for years on a transparency field which would render one invisible. In his desperate race against time, the Hero perfects his portable unit, but once again, barely escapes the Villains men before they destroy is lab.
11. COUNTING COUP:
From within a makeshift laboratory deep withing a cave, withing the mountains, with no way for even dogs to follow, the Hero makes the final adjustment to a vaccine he has already developed and tested on animals, he loads several darts, as before, but these darts also contain the vaccine.
He then, with the help of his invisibility shield, he once again delivers his message, his darts, and his genetic bomb.
SECOND ACT TWIST
12. TRANSFORMATION:
Week’s pass, and the Villain is so rattled and distracted, he does not notice that he is changing. Long suppressed elements from our genetic past are beginning to express themselves – subtle changes: hair, skin color….
13. BURNING THE EVIL:
Thoroughly programmed to believe that dark skin color is a curse from an angry God, his followers see the changes and assume the worst. And they haul him out into public display and burn him at the stake for the curse they assume he has.
14. A NEW STATUS QUO
The Hero convinces the mob to stop — that it is NOT a curse, it’s science, not religion, and promises to undo the damage to the cult security members darted, if they will give up their racial hatred and embrace the science of oneness and brotherhood of all mankind, once and for all.

Brian
I learned that a list of actions will help me tell my story better, and organize it as well.
A.
Considering the concept from Lesson 1, what action could naturally show up
in this movie?Martial arts and wrestling can be shown easily in the movie. I don’t want to show any gun firing only fist and kicking. Today kids are quick to shoot, cause that’s what they see on tv. However, I want to go old school. When I was a kid karate movies ruled the screen and that’s what I want to bring back.
B.
Considering the Mission and Villain Tracks, what action could work for
this track? Sonny can be seen talking to an NFL player during or after
practice. And the gridiron being shown around him and the men that are
considered being macho or predators.C.
How can the action start well, build in the 2nd Act, and escalate to a
climax in the 3rd Act?I want Sonny to realize that all of these athletes from different sports working hard at their craft, but then a villain truly has control of them and their actions on the field or the court. Sonny realizes that Paul is the puppet master in all aspects of sports.
2. b:Fight
I will have Sonny show casing his fighting skills of wrestling and karate.
d:Rescue
Sonny being rescued in the end by a basketball player that they seemed to hit off with in the beginning.
f: Competition
Sonny seeing the levels of competitiveness within the NFL, NHL and the NbA.
g:Dangerous Situations
When Sonny changes his mind, and his daughter is taken from his life Sonny realize that his back is against the wall.

Bob DeCarli’s Action Track!
What I learned: I will need to make sure my script is an ACTION script instead of a THRILLER. I will need to brainstorm more action scenes that move the story forward, but below is my attempt at moving forward without to much self-criticism.
ACTION QUESTIONS:
A. Considering the concept from Lesson 1, what action could naturally show up in this movie?
Rescue
Fight
Chase/Pursuit
Escape/Evade
Interrogation
Dangerous Situations
B. Considering the Mission and Villain Tracks, what action could work for this track?
Fights with the Villain’s Henchmen,
C. How can the action start well, build in the 2nd Act, and escalate to a climax in the 3rd Act?
Action as just one on one, between the Hero and who seems to be a common smuggler, but escalates with more people opposing the Hero, then increasing stakes: (a) Hero discovers the power of THE DEVICE; (b) a Young Boy’s death; (c) the death of most of humanity, so all action initiated by the Hero in Act 3 is to undo the reality created by the Villain.
TYPES OF ACTION I’LL USE:
Rescue
Fight
Chase/Pursuit
Escape/Evade
Interrogation
Dangerous Situations (I have not included any but will work on adding)
SEQUENCE OF ACTION SCENES:
**Initial CHASE by Hero of Henchman #1, then FIGHT, when he tries to get through customs. It initially seems to the Hero like just another smuggler trying to escape after he’s been caught smuggling contraband.
**FIGHT, when Henchman (or Henchmen) come to kill Hero and retrieve the Device, after Hero rejects offer from Villain’s Emissary to buy it. Henchman seems to have won, has the device, but puts it down before shooting Hero, allowing Hero to prevail.
**GUNFIGHT (in the past), when Hero tries to stop Villain’s agent from planting explosive.
**AMBUSH, BIGGER GUNFIGHT – Villain’s Henchmen again attack Hero, in a public place. Hero survives, but a YOUNG BOY is killed instead – not Hero’s fault but he thinks it is.
**PURSUIT/EVADE – Unknown person following Hero. Seems like Her has successfully evaded the person, but ends with Hero arriving at his own home, and someone is waiting for him with a gun.
**CHASE, then BATTLE – in the past, with Hero chasing then battling Henchman in order to prevent the Young Boy from getting killed. Hero succeeds.
**INTERROGATION, by Hero of Villain, in Altered Present
***RACE and FIGHT to get to the Villain, Earlier Version. Bigger battle because in this reality, ALL of the Villain’s Henchmen who had previously died are here. Mother of killed Young Boy appears, acts like she’s going to help Hero, then SHE tries to kill him as well.
**RESCUE of the co-founder.

Madeleine’s Action Track!
“What I learned doing this assignment is there’s many ways to express action and I can use most of them in my story. Yay!
Rough draft of my Action Track.
Concept from Lesson 1:
In Rome, a young FBI Agent’s plan to confess her sins to a priest at St. Peter’s Basilica is thwarted when seconds after she enters the confessional, the church is overtaken by a group of merciless mercenaries, led by a former member of the Swiss Guard. With the help of her intended confessor, she sets out to rescue the frightened hostages, save the Basilica from being blown to smithereens, and bring down the bad guys.
1. Answer the Action Questions:
A. Considering the concept from Lesson 1, what action could naturally show up in this movie?
· Chase/Pursuit
· Fight
· Shootout
· Rescue
· Escape/Evade
· Dangerous Situations
B. Considering the Mission and Villain Tracks, what action could work for this track?
· Chase/Pursuit
· Fight
· Shootout
· Rescue
· Escape/Evade
· Dangerous Situations
C. How can the action start well, build in the 2nd Act, and escalate to a climax in the 3rd Act?
· It will start with the mercenaries entering the Basilica through an underground tunnel and, one-by-one taking out the Basilica guards. Then the mercenaries will discover the FBI Agent on a drone camera, fighting and taking out one of their number and collecting his paraphernalia. From there, one of the mercenaries is sent to kill the FBI Agent. She shoots him. She takes his gun and paraphernalia. Now they arm the drone and send it out to find and kill the FBI Agent. She shoots it out of the air with a laser gun she’s taken from one of the backpacks. Now, she goes after the mercenaries one-by-one until she confronts the leader, whom she fights, gets the upper hand and pushes him off the balcony in the cupola.
2. Select the types of action you’ll use.
A. Chase/PursuitB. FightC. ShootoutD. RescueE. Escape/EvadeG. Dangerous Situations
3. List of action scenes sequenced to deliver my story.
1. INVASION: Mercenaries take over the Basilica, replacing one guard at a time with their own men. They are dressed similarly except for the fact they are brandishing fully automatic guns.
Purpose: Introduces the mercenaries, their leader, and the threat they present.
2. HOSTAGE TAKING: Mercenaries round up tourists and other visitors to the Basilica and contain them not far from the confessionals, where the heroine, an FBI Agent, and her confessor are confined and where other penitents are gathered, either praying their penance or readying for confession. The noise alerts the heroine, who peeks out of the confessional and sees the armed mercenaries. She alerts the priest. He turns off the confessional lights. They stay quiet.
Purpose: This introduces the heroine and her confessor, who both have skills it will take to save the hostages and the Basilica.
3. ESCAPE/EVADE: The FBI Agent and priest escape the confessional unnoticed and try to discover the extent of the threat and the mercenaries’ goal.
Purpose: The FBI Agent and the priest are now working as a team.
4. FIGHT: The FBI Agent takes down a mercenary gazing on the Sacred Chalice, exhibited behind bullet proof glass. She collects his weapon and backpack, which includes his radio. The priest keys on the Sacred Chalice as the mercenaries’ target and the ticking clock they are up against.
Purpose: The ticking clock. At 7:00 p.m. sharp the Sacred Chalice will descend into an underground cement vault. The mercenaries must secure it before that happens.
5. DISCOVERY: A drone carrying a camera spies the downed mercenary. Then it spies the FBI Agent and the priest.
Purpose: Now the mercenaries know that at least two people are loose in the Basilica.
6. ORDER: Capture the priest and the woman he’s with.
Purpose: Insight into the villain. Shows the stakes for the FBI Agent and the Priest.
7. CHASE: The FBI Agent and Priest become aware of the mercenaries closing in. They lead them on a merry chase while the FBI Agent calls the U. S. Embassy where she is a legal attaché and advises them of the situation. They assure her, they will call the Italian Police.
Purpose: Insight into the mercenaries’ level of sophistication.
8. AMBUSH/FIGHT: Two mercenaries confront the priest and the FBI Agent. They fight. The priest and the FBI Agent get the upper hand. They dispatch the mercenaries and take their arms and paraphernalia. The priest spots the drone.
Purpose: Both the priest and the FBI Agent have serious skills. Now, they know how the enemy knows where they are.
9. ATTACK/DRONE: The mercenaries launch the drone again, this time with armament. Going through one of the mercenaries backpacks, the FBI Agent finds a laser gun and shoots down the drone. The priest and the FBI Agent destroy the drone.
Purpose: The FBI Agent can make do with what she has at her disposal.
10. ITALIAN POLICE: The Italian Police show up in front of the Basilica with a hostage negotiator. Meanwhile, another group of Italian Police are approaching through an underground tunnel, unfortunately the same one through which the mercenaries entered the Basilica. They are there to pick them off one-by-one. Two Italian police fall before the assault is pushed back.
Purpose: To show that the mercenary leader knows how to handle the Italian Police.
11. SURPRISE: Mercenaries working to free the Sacred Chalice witness it descend down a deep shaft and disappear from sight.
Purpose: Shows how the mercenary leader reacts to the loss of the chalice. There’s dissent within their ranks. Some want to call off the mission.
12. DISCOVERY/PRESS: The mercenaries learn that one of their hostages is the daughter of a San Francisco billionaire. They start looking for the valuable hostage.
Purpose: Reunites the mercenaries. They have a new, profitable target.
13. ITALIAN POLICE/NEW ASSAULT: Based on information from the priest and conveyed by the FBI Agent over her cell phone, they will enter the Basilica by another, little-used tunnel.
Purpose: Insight into Priest, FBI Agent, and leader of the Italian Police. They’re working together.
14. SEARCH. The mercenaries, armed with an old photo of the billionaire’s daughter, start examining hostages to find the right woman. The priest identifies the billionaire’s daughter first because he knows who she is. She’s a regular at the Basilica.
Purpose: To show that although information from the outside is available to both sides, the insider priest’s info is better.
15. IMPERSONATION. The FBI Agent substitutes herself for the Billionaire’s daughter. The priest spirits the real billionaire’s daughter toward the hidden tunnel through which the Italian Police plan to enter.
Purpose: To get the FBI Agent closer to a confrontation with the leader of the mercenaries.
16. FINAL HOSTAGE/ESCAPE. The FBI Agent’s son recognizes her and calls out, “Mom.” She escapes the clutches of the Mercenaries, grabs her son, and runs for the stairs up to the cupola.
Purpose: Insight into the FBI Agent who will do anything to save her son.
17. CHASE: The leader of the mercenaries chases after the FBI Agent and her son.
Purpose: To show FBI Agent’s skills in evading and fighting.
18. INVASION: The Italian Police invade the Basilica. Led by the priest, they quickly take out the remaining mercenaries. Only the leader is left. They head up the stairs after him.
Purpose: to show the leader of the mercenaries surrounded.
19. CONFRONTATION. At the top of the cupola, the mercenary leader pulls out his gun to shoot the FBI Agent, but his gun jams. The FBI agent rushes toward him. They struggle. The Italian Police arrive. They shoot him. The force of the attack throws him over the balcony.
Purpose: The mercenaries are defeated. The FBI Agent and her son are reunited. Now, she and the priest need to go to confession.

Denice’s Action Track
What I learned doing this assignment is that I have a new list of questions to use to develop the story and new action that I hadn’t considered before.
1. Answer the Action Questions:
A. Considering the concept from Lesson 1, what action could naturally show up in this movie?
Chase/pursuit, evade, escape, fight, dangerous situation, rescue, competition
B. Considering the Mission and Villain Tracks, what action could work for this track?
Interrogation, fight, dangerous situation, chase, pursuit, shootout, competition, torture
C. How can the action start well, build in the 2nd Act, and escalate to a climax in the 3rd act?
I have to show who Triple is and what her capabilities are before she escapes from her dad to see her mom. Finds her mom gone and an Assassin tries to kill her. In Act 2, Triple has to find her kidnapped mom and the only lead is the Assassin and Villain who hires killers to go after her. She ends up in the enemy’s lair where she loses her mother and has to save her dad. Kills Assassin, follows Villain for a face-off.
1.TRIPLE’S TRAINING TESTS– telekinetic, martial arts, languages, flying airplane, water test
Purpose: to show Triple’s competence and how fear interferes with her telekinetic
abilities
2. CHASE/PURSUIT: Triple rides a special all-terrain scooter to escape building that’s locking
down.
Purpose: To show her competence in action not related to testing
3. EVADE: In disguise, Triple speaks to agent hired to bring her home at the airport.
Purpose: To show her boldness
