    Puts Essence to Work

What I learned is that there are subtle themes in each scene. I am able to see more clearly why my characters speak and act the way they do. I noted that each one speaks according to their educational backgrounds. Michael Daniels, an African American, has finished college and wants to sing secular music against the wishes of his father and grandfather who come from a long line of “hard-shell’ Baptist Ministers. His consciousness seeks to break this pathology of blaming the devil.

Script I choose: “The Soul Singer”

Scene 1 Location: Mosley Park -Atlanta
Logline: The Annual First Baptist Church picnic brings the church families together for fun and Games.
Essence I’ve discovered: The engaged couple steals away to have some quiet time together. While as the event concludes, the Senior Minister kills the joy of the festive event shaming congregants into volunteering for activities that serve the church.
New Logline: The Annual First Baptist Church picnic reveals that the engaged couple, Veronica and Michael’s love started in grade school and has blossomed to an engagement.

Scene 2 Location: Atlanta Freeway – Car – Day
Logline: Michael’s family have dreaded anticipation for this Sunday dinner with his future mother-in-law.
Essence I’ve discovered: Michael’s family dreads their Sunday dinner with Mrs. Saterfield because she’s “uppity,” and may still be an alcoholic.
New Logline: Michael demonstrates compassion as he expresses to his family that studies show that alcoholism is a disease and it can be overcome.

Scene 3 Location: Mrs. Saterfield’s Front Porch – Day
Logline: Michael sulks at the overzealous plans for their big wedding day and speaks up causing tension in his relationship with Veronica, who’s complacent.
Essence I’ve discovered: Michael wants a smaller more private intimate wedding without all the fanfare and wishes Veronica would speak up to her mother about her overbearing and expensive plans for “their” wedding.
New Logline: Michael wants Veronica to assert herself more in the planning of this costly wedding that Mrs. Saterfield wants to impress her friends.

Scene 4 Location: Daniels Home – Kitchen – Day
Logline: Michael’s father and Grandfather sees that Michael is keeping some late hours and questions him about how his upcoming sermon is developing for Mt. Zion Church
Essence I’ve discovered: That Michael keeps his secret that he’s singing in a night club late hours because he knows his Father thinks singing secular music is singing for the devil.
New Logline: Michael is evasive when asked about his late hours and let’s his family think that he’s working on his sermon to avoid his father’s wrath.

Scene 5 Location: The Basement Night Club – Night
Logline: Michael’s passion is on full display singing in a night club with Veronica and his band.
Essence I’ve discovered: Michael has a keen since of destiny and will not let fear or the grooming to one day fill his father’s shoes stop him from his dreams.
New Logline: When Michael’s dad gets an anonymous call, he leaves his home in a huff to discover with his own eyes if a rumor is true. When enters the night club and sees Michael “singing for the devil,” all hell breaks loose in the Daniels Family.
