    Mike’s 10 Most Interesting Things

What I learned doing this assignment is lesson is how to pick out the most interesting things in the script to use in my pitches.

    • A. What is most unique about your villain and hero?
    • B. Major hook of your opening scene? The first scene shows Jocinda as a compassionate go-getter, as she chooses to save a woman in an alley instead of capturing the serial burglar every detective dreams about.
    • C. Any turning points? When Jocinda learns her goddaughter’s baseball team is loaded with brainiacs and her original plan to teach them baseball with her experience and knowledge does not work, she relies on the knowledge of a self-proclaimed physics professor and a regular at the Local Tavern to help teach the kids baseball through science and physics. Midway through the season, she investigates one of the Little League’s corporate sponsors because she suspects they are using some of the kids to test with their new nanotechnology program.
    • D. Emotional dilemma? There are some love interests among the kids, and even Jocinda, an autistic kid, is helped by the comradery of the team and the compassion of Coach Jocinda. One of the kid’s dads on the team is pulled out of a deep, depressed state because of the team.
    • E. Major twists?
    • F. Reversals?
    • G. Character betrayals? The biggest betrayal is when we find out the man helping the kids learn baseball is behind the nanotechnology program.
    • H. Or any big surprises? One of the surprises is that the first people we realize the lab uses in the program are chimpanzees, and at the end, the physics professor is the brains behind the program.

What I learned doing this assignment is I was able to find many hooks within my screenplay. Then, learning to decide from a producer’s point of view which of these hooks is most marketable. I have a tendency to overwrite my hooks and need to work on boiling them down into shorter, snappier, versions.

    A. What makes your hero and villain unique?

Howie is oblivious to his elfin heritage until he falls in love with Jasper, a magical, stranded elf whose secret mission hinges on Howie’s self-discovery.

    B. Major hook of your opening scene

Howie flirts with a hunky cologne cardboard cutout model, who appears in the flesh as Howie’s boyfriend, Trevor, the arrogant brand ambassador.

    C. Turning points

Howie uncovers Jasper’s true identity as a stranded North Pole elf who accidentally broke the magical Keystone Chimney.

    D. Emotional dilemmas

Howie must choose between saving Christmas by sending Jasper back to the North Pole or letting him stay, jeopardizing Christmas for their chance at love.

    E. Major twists

The chimney at Winterberry Manor is actually the legendary Keystone Chimney, essential for Santa’s magical Christmas deliveries.

    F. Reversals

Only Howie, through a mysterious enactment of the true Christmas spirit, can fix the Keystone Chimney—yet he’s reluctant to fulfill this responsibility.

    G. Character betrayals

Jasper deceives Howie, urging him to fix the Keystone Chimney without revealing he caused its damage.

    H. Big surprises

Jasper is granted permission to stay with Howie, while Jesús ends up at the North Pole in Jasper’s place.

What I learned from this assignment is that I had more hooks than I thought. It was useful to set the assignment down and come back to it.
    1. Go through your project and see which of these specific hooks you have:
    1. Misa is lives an off the grid lifestyle and is angry at anyone who doesn’t act to save the planet
    2. Bill is an alien.
    3. Misa was thrown out of the Farmer’s Market for fighting about plastic bags
    4. Bill comes out of suspended animation and breaks his spaceship’s toilet
    5. Bill crashes into Misa’s outhouse – breaking his ship and stranding him on Earth
    6. Bill and Misa swap bodies
    7. Bill’s body is dying with Misa in it. Does Bill return to his home planet in Misa’s body or does he let Misa leave in his body hoping that the body will recover?
    8. Deputy Rhoades is disturbed by Misa’s odd behavior and investigates at every opportunity.
    9. Deputy Rhoades is hiding the fact that he is a recovering addict and thinks Misa needs rehab.
    10. When Misa & Bill try to win a contest for environmentally friendly products, we find out that Misa’s family are environmental criminals.
    11. They unswap bodies and Bill returns to his home planet.

What I learned: This was actually really encouraging, because I learned that my story is really exciting and has tons of awesome, marketable elements!

o Hero gave himself and his friends nanotech upgrades and they now have superpowers

o Story dives right into the action as our heroes infiltrate a high-tech medical nanotechnology corporation to steal their latest product and sneak one of their scientists out – our heroes think this is a routine mission, when suddenly they are confronted with a challenging dilemma which requires one of them to die and be brought back to life!

o They discover mind control programming in the latest version of the medical nanotech they stole.

o Hero’s sister has spina bifida and can only walk because hero hacked her tech, and when they are captured by a dangerous gang known as the Vipers, instead of being killed, the head Viper asks him to program his daughter’s tech because she also has spina bifida, and then the gang accepts them and helps them break into Medinano.

o When our hero and his friends decide to fight and try to expose Medinano’s mind control plans to the world, they are betrayed by one of their own, one of them is killed, and the hero and his sister are taken captive.

o Final twist – As they are about to undergo a dangerous procedure to remove their medical nanotech, the doctors and nurses start succumbing to a strange illness and dropping dead around them. They discover that their mentor planted a virus that is killing everyone who has the newest nanotech!

o Millions will die if they do nothing, so they are faced with an emotional dilemma: Try to stop their mentor’s deadly plans, or let the people who have hurt them, along with millions of relatively innocent people, die?

o They have to team up with their enemies to try and stop the virus.

o Ultimately they have to call on all the poor, sick, and cast out people who society has thrown away to come help them stop the virus and save millions of lives.

o Possibility for lots of really cool, stylized visuals, and could be done live-action, animated, or a blend of the two.

What I learned about this assignment is that it gave me a chance to analyze my script to see where my hooks are and what could benefit from improvement. I also learned that I just might have sufficient twists and turns to make my story as interesting as I sure as hell hope that it is. Frankly, I thought that I was almost through with rewriting, but perhaps not, and that is not a bad thing.

    1. Tammi is furious when her dead husband ruins her rug by bleeding on it.
    2. Violet uses reverse psychology to coerce Tammi into moving to the Hide Away Retirement Village and murder an “undesirable” resident.
    3. Tammi saves Violet from falling off a cliff.
    4. Tammi has no problem killing people, but she saves a dog that Violet wants dead.
    5. One of Tammi’s intended victims drives her electric wheelchair off a cliff before Tammi can do the deed herself.
    6. Violet turns against Tammi and conspires with the men Tammi framed for her first husband’s murder to do Tammi in.
    7. Maynard manipulates Tammi and Violet to turn against one another.
    8. Tammi accidentally causes Violet to fall from the cliff and die.
    9. Maynard gets long awaited revenge on Tammi by killing her with a lawn dart.
    10. Maynard escapes the Hide Away to open a motel where we learn that he has stolen art treasures to sell.

What I learned doing this assignment is…Now that the story is in full swing, adding this assignment really ups the game. I especially appreciate Kristin D. and Hal in the video zoom where this was discussed. Hearing the average grow into the phenomenal (I want to see that movie!) was eye opening. I have added a few things on my list that I’ll need to write into my script. And, I plan on upping much more as things move along. Thank you! Talk about an, “AH HA!” Moment.
    The 10 most interesting things:
    • 1-Three-way (plus one!) conspiring and infidelity.
    • 2-Stolen identity-the protagonists ex- takes on her identity in stealing credit for her amazing artwork.
    • 3-Villain #1: (P’s Ex) Secretly a high powered call-girl Madam.
    • 4-The husband and protagonists ex-lover work together to control the protagonist and, in the end, turn on each other.
    • 5-Protagonists Husband is having an affair with her brother.
    • 6-An art exhibit fire brings the protagonist together with her old flame.
    • 7-Hero: An amazing art painter, world renowned.
    • 8-Villain #2: (P’s Husband) Clueless about life, things have come too easy for him. Naïve. Thus, he pisses people off and has no clue why or how he does it.
    • 9- Protagonists brother was playing as if interested in having an affair with her husband. He suspected foul play. He wants to save her dignity and help her gain her self-respect back.
    • 10- Villain #2 is a sex addict.
